Written to point the way to freedom for Christians who live under an unwritten religious code of expectations and rules that shame them and drain them of spiritual strength.
Customer Reviews:
THIS BOOK IS ONLY FOR CHRISTIANS WHO BELIEVE CHRIST WAS DIVINE, AND NO ONE ELSE.......2006-11-12
How can the book's description say that you do not have to be a Christian, yet: "discover the liberation of the gospel of grace in Jesus Christ and the rest that comes through what Christ has done on the cross"?
I do not get it. I bought it and was very disapppointed. I do not believe in anyone's divinity. How can I relate to the book's teachings?
Yet, I am glad many Christian readers did. BUT AMAZON, PLEASE GET THESE DESCRIPTIONS MORE ACCURATE. I LOST TIME AND MONEY.
"If those signs match your experience, this book is for you. The author is not trying to get you to behave in a "Christian" manner. If trying hard were the key to the victorious Christian life, you'd probably be in the hall of fame by now, don't you think? This is a message to help you unmask the lies that keep you on a works-righteousness treadmill, to help you discover the liberation of the gospel of grace in Jesus Christ and the rest that comes through what Christ has done on the cross."
Life Changing.......2005-04-24
I heard about this book at a time when I was being overwhelmed by the pain of my past. At first, I didn't think I had shame. But as I read this book for the second time, it changed my life.Through Jeff's honesty and compassion (having walked this road himself) I was finally able to feel that someone understood what was raging inside of me and he gave me permission to rest.......what I needed most He told me it was OK to feel what I was feeling...at last someone could identify what I couldn't seem to verbalize.
I have been and still am in therapy, but this book was a catalyst in my understanding of who I am, how I got this way, and how to get better. If you are struggling emotionally, even if you think that this book won't help you, take the chance. Don't deprive yourself of something that could be the best $10 you ever spent.......your emotional well being is priceless.
Excellent.......2004-01-27
Reading this book has been both painful and lifechanging for me. I have struggled for almost all my Christian life with shame and feeling like I'm never good enough. I could identify so much with the section on shame based relating. This book not only helps you pinpoint the problem, but also offers sensible, down to earth solutions. For the first time, I have come to believe, deep down in my heart, that God's love and acceptance of me is not based on my performance. I can't even begin to describe all the ways that God has used this book in my life. If you struggle with feelings of never measuring up, shame and feeling like you have to earn God's approval, do yourself a favor. Order this book.
Superb.......2003-09-10
I ordered on 9/3 and received the book like new on 9/8. Thanks loads. jhc
Definitely worth reading (thank you Jeff)!.......2003-05-11
This book was recommended to me several years ago when I was going through some extremely horrible situations with coming out of a borderline cult and dealing with some of the radical movements and teachings that are out there these days.
The book really helped me sort out a lot of things and helped me understand the difference between trying to find life through our works (either 'positive' religious activities or 'negative' sinful fulfilment), and the realization that Christ is our true source life.
He also alludes to how we try to rely on other people as our source of life. We place great demands on our spouse, kids, and others and expect them to give us what only Christ can fulfill.
A true classic for getting away from the performance treadmill and learning the sufficiency and completeness of accepting Christ. I really ought to read it again.
Please get this book. I also recommend Dudley Hall's "Grace Works".

Customer Reviews:
the life and death adventures in golf.......2003-04-20
Survival Rule #1 Watch Where You're Driving and that doesn't just mean at the tee off! Like all the Worst-Case Scenario Books in the series, this one has the familiar, easy to read layout with step-by-step instructions that are brief but informative. Nice how this sport edition gives a few words of advice on playing the game and explains how the official rules of golf apply in the unique situations, plus highlights a few guidelines to keeping good golf etiquette, which is all helpful for preventing confusion and heated debate among players.
The topic is divided into just a few chapters called: Bad Lies, Equipment Disasters, Dangerous Animals and Golfing Emergencies. The scenarios covered range from how to retrieve a ball lost in the ball washer, retrieve a ball from a gopher hole, how to keep score without a pencil, how to spot a cheat, disarm an irate golfer, start a dead cart, stop a runaway cart or free a cart from a sand trap. How to prevent a club from flying out of your hand and how to retrieve a golf club or golf ball lodged in a tree [they recommend wearing a hard hat to protect your head during this operation, imagine that!]. How to drive with a putter or putt with a driver, how to survive if you run out of tees, how to treat a sprained ankle, a blister, poison ivy, sunburn, heatstroke or dehydration. How to deal with a brush fire, alligator, snake, rabid animal or an attack by birds, not to mention how to deal with a fashion emergency or recognize a golf addiction. There is even a little over view on gambling bets and some translation of golfspeak. Also advice is included for avoiding lighting strikes and tornados while you're outside in open areas.
This book is a riot and the illustrations are great, they add so much and they truly are hilarious. A golfer at any level or interest will love it and even those who make fun of the sport and hate it, might find the book enjoyable too. It has an answer for nearly every golfer's nightmare, giving tips for surviving a life and death situation that probably will just end up being all par for the course.
Golfer's first aid (and second, and third...).......2003-01-30
This is THE present for someone in your neighbourhood that's always boasting about his (or her) golf relations... Seen the beautiful greeeeeen cover? Me too...
Great pick.......2002-12-09
I picked this book up for my parents as an afterthought and a joke (one avid golfer for life, mother just picking it up) and they LOVED it! Both sat down and read it straight through, laughing out loud and enjoying it. Now I wish I had saved it for the holidays!
You Can't Tell a Book by Its Cover!.......2002-06-02
When you see this book, you may think it will be a deeply discounted "remainder" in a month so why buy it? How wrong you would be! The authors cover a wide range of topics with expertise, creativity, and sometimes humor. This book will help you on the course and could actually save your life. Start to browse through it and you'll be hooked!
ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!! Even non-golfers will enjoy this one!.......2002-06-01
My husband is a mediocre (at best) golfer. This book caught my eye and after reading for just 5 minutes I was laughing so hard I nearly peed my pants! Each page just made me laugh harder. I have shared it with two girlfriends, whose husbands are also links warriors, and they laughed just as hard. I can't wait to give it to my husband and father-in-law on Father's Day. Be sure to check out the sections on "Curing Your Addiction" (complete with sketch of man sleeping with his golfclubs) and "How to Survive a Bird Attack" (with sketch of seagulls attacking golfer's head). I am telling you, this book is a complete riot! If you need a good laugh - or 30 minutes' worth- this will do the trick!

Book Description
Con artist Corrine Hammond's life is drastically changed when she accepts God's love. What she doesn't know is that someone is following her--someone determined to force her to stand trial for her past crimes; someone who will, by a strange twist of fate, find himself at her mercy.
Customer Reviews:
Really enjoyable read about the Grace of God!.......2001-11-03
I really, really love this book. Lawana Blackwell did another inspiring job on her VICTORIAN SERANADE series. Corrine is great character struggling with her spiritual growth when she sets out to reunite with her husband and daughter. Joseph is an interesting, unique character who must track down Corrine and bring her to justice for all the crimes she has committed against people. Jenny is Corrine's daughter who finds herself the pawn in a insane woman's plot to make Jenny her daughter to replace the daughter that was killed by drowning. Corrine finds herself abducted and then later have her abductor at her mercy when he gets deathly ill. Lawana Blackwell did a great job on the character of a woman's faith put to the test. Only the grace of God could bring her and her family back together.
A very good read!.......2001-07-17
I really enjoyed this book. The story really kept my interest. I enjoy Christian fiction. Lawana Blackwell is one of the best Christian fiction writers out there.
a good continuation of this series.......2001-06-22
At the end of Victorian seranade #1, Corrine had accepted Christ and become determined to seek out her long-abandoned husband and daughter to beg forgiveness and make amends. In this second book of the series, however, she is intercepted by Mr. Price, a detective who represents someone in her old life who now wants vengeance for the wrongs that she did. An unbeliever, he refuses to see that Corrine in reborn into a different person and continues with his plan to abduct her and deliver her to the man that she had wronged in the past. As they journey together, it becomes clear to her that Mr. Price is a very sick man, perhaps even at death's door. Although his illness gives her chance to escape, her new Christian faith will not allow her to leave him to die alone, and she cares for him for weeks on end. In the meantime, Corrine's daughter Jenny is taken out of her impoverished home and sent to the home of a wealthy landowner. However, this move soon proves to not be good for Jenny, as she realizes that the mistress of the house borders on insanity. Will Corrine be able to break away from Mr. Price? Will Jenny still be in her original home when Corrine arrives there? More importantly, is Jenny's life in danger with her "new Mother?" This a very good continuation of this series, and I highly recommend it.
A great book about God's love!!!!!.......1999-09-07
Corrine sets out to find her husband and daughter that she abandoned 8 years before. But there is a bitter man that wants to her to pay for her past crimes. This book is great because it demostrates how God could forgive anyone if they repent of their sin. You'll love this book!

Book Description
Romance and revenge, hot tempers, and cold feet frame a gripping story set in rural Elkton, Idaho, in the 1860s. Young Jordan Shaw angers easily and lives wildly, experiencing prison and kidnapping before his family attempts to tame him with marriage. To avoid their choice, he seeks a mail order bride, pretty Diana Morrow, who suffers the abuse of a violent father before escaping her tumultuous family home. When Diana arrives in Elkton and finds Jordan suddenly missing, will a handsome distraction change her destiny? How three young people's paths entwine -- and how God meets each deep need with sufficient grace -- make this riveting story both vastly entertaining and faith-inspiring.
Customer Reviews:
Great story idea badly written and this book drags. .......2006-07-31
The idea for the story sounded great but the book was badly written. I read the large print copy there were 524 pages only two hundred of those pages had to do with mail order bride concept. On page 442 she finally meets Jordan's family and only 82 of her meeting her future husband and marring him. The ending of the book was unbelievable and rushed. The annoying part in the book the author kept repeating her self. This book just drags on.
Good Concept...Poorly written!.......2006-04-18
While the concept for this story is good, and could have been a good read....it wasn't! The level it was written for seemed to be for very young adults, and things were over explained. The dialogue was unrealistic and way to 'wordy' , and the bride wasn't even introduced until well into the book, after a rather pointless, and seemingly never ending part about the man's life as a young boy. I understand the concept of introducing Christ as a main theme...but it was done in an annoying way, a way that would in my opinion, push people away, as to bringing them to Him. Basically, the only reason I even made myself finish this book was because I have a need for closure! The ending was completely unrealistic and horribly written....I know this review is rude...but I would definitly recommend AGAINST reading this book!
I love this book...and here's why..........2002-11-23
Though not my absolute favorite of Al and Joanna Lacy's books, this one was a very nice read. The entire Mail Order Bride series is worth a look to anyone who likes historical Christian romance.
Anyway, the book is about a young woman, Diana, who lives in fear of an abusive father. She is willing to do almost anything to escape...even become a mail order bride. The man she secretly corresponds with is a selfish young man who places the ad because he is rebelling against his matchmaking parents. He gets his best friend,Knight, who is a writer at the local newspaper, to compose the ad. He later convinces Knight to answer his prospective bride's letters because he has a natural gift with words. Diana falls in love with the wonderful letters that she receives and eagerly journeys far from home to marry the man that has so touched her heart with his words. Knight has unwillingly fallen for Diana as well and dreads seeing her wed to his best friend. But when Diana arrives, her future husband is missing. As she joins the search for him, she is thrown into close proximity with Knight. As she falls for a man she can never have, she thinks that that is the worst possible thing that could ever happen, not knowing that her father has followed her and is determined to bring her home...no matter what.
The plot was interesting and I liked the hero and heroine a good deal, but the number one reason I have to suggest this book is that it features some of my writing. I was the winner of The Mail Order Bride writing contest and the ad and letters written by Diana and Knight that are featured in the book are all by me. I am recognized on the copyright page, or whatever it's called. So, give it a try and if you happen to like my letters look for anything written by me in the future. I'm a bestseller wannabe like most of us out there.

A sermon, not a story.......2007-03-23
I am a Christian - raised in a "bible believing" (a phrase these authors love to use) home and I hated this book. If you want a sermon...read it. If you want a great story with interesting characters who have a smack of reality...don't. The dialogue was stilted (that's being nice). Here's a quote "Tomorrow I'm getting married and it's going to be the best day of my life, except for the day I became a child of Christ!" I know that sounds benign and even sweet but that kind of thing is said every two or three sentences. The characters are completely one dimensional with no real heart and no intellect. I almost kept reading just to see how bad these authors could make their characters...they did a great job.

Product Description
With a Measure of Grace recounts with sensitivity and wit the tale of a women-owned, Buddhist-based restaurant becoming a community anchor in a small Mormon town. Within the book's 160 beautiful, color-photographed pages, former backcountry caterers and professional river chefs Blake Spalding and Jen Castle share their struggles and successes as the coowners of Hell's Backbone Grill. Spalding and Castle began with the goal to meld their ideas of place-based, seasonally appropriate cuisine, right livelihood, environmental ethics and social and community responsibility into a restaurant they would operate with compassion, generosity, loving kindness and grace. They were unaware at the time that given the unusual circumstances of their venture, this plan would be the restaurant's only chance of survival. Located in the heart of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Boulder, Utah, was the last town in the nation to receive year-round mail by automobile. Today it has no stoplight, cell phone service, ATM, grocery store or medical facilities. But it has Zagat-rated Hell's Backbone Grill, which despite all odds, has won the acclaim of national and international media. Sixty-five favorite recipes accompany charming anecdotes, old-fashioned rural wisdom and introductions to captivating local characters, making With a Measure of Grace a warm and earthy, unforgettable read.
Customer Reviews:
Boulder is to towns as HBG is to restaurants as this book is to cookbooks........2007-06-21
This book does contain recipes, and they are very good. But it is much more than a cookbook. It is a meditation on food as a manifestation of place, of values, of mindful living... I cannot read this book without glimpsing the transformative power of right intention. It is really the story of how two remakable people built a community out of little more than their vision and their commitment to rightness. It documents grace through the story of a rural restaurant, and achieves a sort of modest scriptural value in the process, humble but beautiful, and worth reading.
I recommend this book highly. Read it with a chocolate-chile cream pot in hand.
A must for your kitchen and your library.......2005-11-02
Reader Beware! If you open this book to look for a recipe, make sure you have the rest of the day to spend reading. It will draw you in like your favorite Novel and soon you will be cooking in Hell's Backbone Grill. It should be first on your gift list for anyone you know who cooks, reads or eats.
With a Measure of Grace, The Story and Recipes of a Small Town REstaurant.......2005-07-02
Poignant and inspiring - oh, and yeah - good recipes too!
A blessing in the desert.......2005-06-22
This book is grace and beauty. It eloquently captures the heart of a small town and its people. And gives you insight to this beautiful restaurant, Hell's Backbone Grill, their recipes, their staff, their spirits and hearts. I met Blake one morning over breakfast. I was sitting there, eating the most amazing breakfast, and there was this lovely woman sitting and talking to some people about social justice, Tibet, organic food, etc. I stopped eating and started eavesdropping harder. My life and work involve social justice issues; I do a lot of work to raise awareness of China's violent occupation of Tibet. I hadn't seen the book yet, but I ordered a bunch of them. Blake, one of the owners, was that lovely woman. She came over and made sure I wasn't going to spend my rent money on her books. Then she invited me to tea. And about two minutes later, she became one of my dearest friends. The spirit of this restaurant is based in Buddhism, which just means that it is based in love and kindness, compassion and beauty. The restaurant and the book are infused with that love and compassion. Tibetan prayer flags are, simply put, flags with prayers on them. When the wind blows them, prayers are sent out, prayers of love and compassion, an end to suffering for all beings. Prayer flags surround the restaurant. I can't help but feel that the place is blessed. The book is an invitation into their lives, into their hearts. And it is an invitation to visit Boulder, Utah.
GOURMET IN THE HIGH DESERT.......2005-05-10
I've just returned from a week at Boulder Mountain Lodge. Hell's Backbone Grill is the centerpiece of the place. The food is astounding sophisticated and delicious. Our goal was to sample everything on the breakfast and dinner menus. Didn't quite make that, but we're now inspired to try the recipes at home. Blake and Jen have made them easily accessible and have written beautifully about the gorgeous setting of Hell's Backbone Grill. The book is lovely, both for reading and for cooking. I bought several copies for gifts.
