Book Description

Most books on marriage offer ten easy steps and twenty-five proven principles for achieving marital bliss. But Walter Wangerin side-steps such easy answers and offers us instead an intimate portrait of his own courtship and thirty-two year marriage-and a pastoral view of married life that inspires readers to view their own marriages with new honesty and hope. Wangerin's six tasks of marriage encourages couples to better understand and happily live out the vows they made, giving them tools to nurture and maintain a strong marital relationship. In his endorsement, Philip Yancey accurately describes this book as "an enduring classic and a book of wisdom, beauty, compassion, and piercing honesty."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best marriage book i have read........2007-09-30

My husband and I have read several marriage books and we do pre-marital counseling with engaged couples in my husbands congregation. As a Christian woman, this is the best I have read. In many of the marriage books I have read I have sensed a tone of condescension towards women. Not that I still didn't get a lot out of those books, but some of the ideas about women were very tradtitional and some of the expectations on women were extremely conservative and stereotypical. In As For Me and My House, Wangerin, respects woman and his treatment of both men and woman are fair, taking into consideration that not all women and men are the same. His chapters on forgiveness are excellent combining an intelligent blend of a high view of scripture and psychology. He also writes well and the book is an enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Set of Principles to Build a Godly Marriage.......2007-09-10

Walter Wangerin's "As For Me and My House" presents a relationally and spiritually pragmatic guide for building a lasting, Christian marriage. While the writing style edges towards maudlin on occasion, the book's core concepts are rock solid and presented in a clear language with even clearer examples. Wangerin's approach is to set aside the conventional wisdom about how relationships "should" be--absorbed through culture, church, and family---and address how individuals actually feel and how relationships could be if approached from what might be called a "servant's" perspective. Wangerin's effectiveness in articulating this approach is based upon his long experience as a pastor in counseling couples and his insistence on acknowledging that marriage is a rewarding, if at times, harrowing challenge. Several themes, emphasized through vignettes about his marriage, are expanded upon to provide concrete suggestions for action.

First, Wangerin addresses newlyweds by showing that marriage is, no matter how much time the couple has been dating, an altogether different type of relationship. He discusses in frank terms the struggle to absorb a new life together with new realities and new responsibilities. His honesty in addressing a couple's fears, unrealistic expectations, and occasional dismay with each other upon first being married serves the newly engaged or newly married reader by relieving the pressure of a "perfect" marriage. According to Wangerin, every newly married couple experiences these issues. Wangerin goes on to insist that marriage is in fact a leap into the unknown. From a conventional wisdom perspective, this is an unorthodox but intuitively satisfying perspective that frees the reader to being building their marriage with an optimist's realism.

The second portion of the book explores the central pillar of Wangerin's marriage philosophy: forgiveness. According to Wangerin, love is a necessary, but not sufficient condition to sustain a marriage. Above even love, the ability to forgive is the means by which a long and mutually satisfying marriage can be built. Moreover, developing the ability to forgive depends crucially a strong relationship with God. For Wangerin, forgiveness is less a gift from a magnanimous spouse who was been wronged and more a service to the spouse and the relationship. Different from forgiveness of wrongs suffered from those we are not in close relationship with, Wangerin insists on a much more aggressive approach to confronting sin in marriage. Without the sinner understanding the sin, neither true forgiveness or true repentance can take place.

The third portion of the book builds out what Wangerin calls a servant's approach to marriage by discussing the six tasks of a marriage: 1) Truthfullness and dependability, 2) Sharing the work of survival, 3) Talking and listening, 4) Making Love, 5)Healing, and 6) Gifting and volunteering. While nothing in this section would surprise the reader, the honesty with which it is written provides the reader with clear insights into how to approach serving one's spouse. Wangerin also to discusses adultery and abusive relationships which primarily draw upon his concept of forgiveness.

The strength of "As For Me and My House" as a guide to marriage rests in Wangerin's ability to translate Biblical principles into practical guides for improving one's relationship with their spouse. His credentials as a counseling pastor enable him to show real examples of the principles. Thus "As For Me and My House" is a book immediate impact which should prove useful to the reader with a genuine desire to build a spiritually satisfying marriage. The weakness of the book is that it was written almost twenty years ago and cultural norms and relationship patterns have changed significantly. Yet even while the reader may feel that Wangerin is coming from a different time, this does not in any way reduce the value and relevance of the lessons he seeks to teach.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all married couples.......2007-07-15

This is one of the greatest marriage books I have read - and I have read a number of them. Wangerin weaves his own story throughout the book, making it more meaningful than a mere "How-to" book on marrriage. There are pearls of wisdom in this book that are applicable to all relationships. Not only do my husband and I own a copy of this book, but we buy it as a wedding present for most weddings we go to.

5 out of 5 stars the best gift you could give a couple about to be married!.......2007-03-02

a friend gave this book to my husband and me for a wedding present, and we read through it together... he read it aloud to me :) it was wonderful and brought up lots of things we hadn't thought to discuss, and gave insightful and fresh ideas about how to handle different situations. THe best thing is it isn't a 10 ways to make your marriage work kind of book... it is filled with prinicples and ideas... so it can be used in all sorts of situations. we have been married for almost 2 years now, and we are going to read through it again together this summer as a good reminder! :)

In the years leading up to marriage, and during the ten years I've been married, I've read MANY marriage books. My reading has not been sparked by any particular crisis, but rather, by a desire to make our marriage better. This book is the best! Many Christian marriage books paint the picture that the author has a perfect marriage. Wangerin puts away any such pretense and shows us his soul. In the process, we learn about ourselves. I encourage any couple to read this book, whether things are great, or heading toward divorce. Thank you to Wangerin for writing this book!

    Book Description

It's a world we barely see, but it is teeming with life. In the dust of a typical house, carpet beetles, mites, silverfish, and other creatures live and die, producing new generations every few months. Mold, bacteria, and yeast lurk undetected in heating and cooling systems. Debris dispersed into the air from these organisms can cause runny noses, itchy eyes, coughing, headaches, and breathing difficulties. Some people, especially those made highly sensitive by allergies, suffer from devastating health problems and the worry that, as one such sufferer lamented, "My house is killing me!"

Scrutinizing house dust and air samples with a microscope, indoor air quality expert Jeffrey C. May has spent his career helping people identify what's causing their chronic health problems. In My House Is Killing Me! he draws on the dramatic personal stories of his clients' suffering and relief to help readers understand the links between environmental factors and problems like allergies and asthma. Explaining how air conditioning, finished basements, and other home features affect air quality, he offers a step-by-step approach to identifying, controlling, and often eliminating the sources of indoor pollutants and allergens. If we could see this contamination, May observes, the air would look as murky as stagnant water, and we would know not to breathe it.

Reading My House Is Killing Me! lets you see your house the way an expert would. Just as he looks at spaces and systems during an indoor air quality investigation, May focuses first on the areas of daily life (bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen), then looks into attics and basements (including heating and air conditioning), and finally moves outside to the garage and the exterior of a home. Along with offering a wealth of practical advice and proven solutions for various problems, he includes a glossary of terms and a list of valuable resources.

5 out of 5 stars Worked for my family.......2007-01-10

My daughters have a range of chronic respiratory issues to simple allergies. This book helped me realize what I can do for them and it has made a difference. The main point is to find the source of the allergen before purchasing solutions. We thought our air purifier and humidifier were great machines to help with cleansing and adding moisture to the indoor air. Boy, were we wrong. We may have actually been spewing out mold particles and distributing dust mite fecal material into the air. The first part of the book was hard to read because it shows the common causes of allergies - dust mites and other little creatures that may be in your pillow at this moment. The book made suggestions from simple to the complex. Some of our changes were simple like using a wet mop on our floors, adding dust-mite-proof pillow cases, and running stuffed animals through the dryer. Fortunately, we didn't have to go to the extreme to get some relief and my daughters are coughing and sneezing much, much less. This book gives you some tools to help you become an indoor air detective in your home or at least, where to begin to get help.

2 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for some allergies -- but not others.......2005-11-11

"My House Is Killing Me!" is a wonderful book with lots of great information for people who are allergic to mold, mildew, and dust mites.

Contrary to the broadly worded title, this book contains relatively little information for people who are allergic to tree pollen, grass pollen, weed pollen, pet dander, and chemicals (i.e., chemical sensitivity). Unfortunately, I'm allergic to everthing on the second list and nothing on the first list. So, most of this book wasn't very helpful for me.

However, if dust mites, mold, or mildew trigger your allergies, you will find this book quite helpful. Each chapter addresses one room and ends with a list summarizing what you can do to improve that room. The book contains numerous stories about houses triggered allergies of these sorts, why, and what can be done about it -- the presentation of these stories was too mellodramatic for my tastes, but the advice appears to be sound and well considered.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2005-09-24

Jeffrey May is a clear, concise communicator. He offers specific, helpful information. Easy to read and useful.

5 out of 5 stars Good book, but magnesium supplementation also helps.......2005-05-27

This book is helpful in that the factors discussed in it can contribute to, and exacerbate, allergies and asthma. But there is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma and allergies is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma and/or allergies who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with these ailments under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma or allergies please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve these ailments. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective form.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW !!! .......2004-11-20

If you own a house or plan to buy one in the future then this book is a MUST read. The author takes you through a list of things to watch out for, room by room, section by section.

Is it possible to find the perfect home? Perhaps not, but the author takes you through a list of common sense steps you can take to improve living arrangements for you and your family, especially if there is a family history of asthma or allergies.

If you buy this book, be warned, it is hard to put down. The author does an excellent job of providing details when needed, but keeps the story line moving and interesting.

Reading this book my daugther(6yrs.) and I enjoyed a special moment learning about how beautiful are the simple things. And gave us the oportunity to learn how easy is to celebrate life and love.
The most important lesson of all is to be proud of what we love and care.

5 out of 5 stars Anthopology for Children.......2002-11-04

I am a senior in college, and an elementary education major with a minor in anthropology- when I found this book, I was estatic. Its beautiful photography is greatly complimented with Maya Angelou's flowing words. Humor, color, and the similarities with the Ndebele girl (Thandi, which means hope) are sure to attract children. They will learn that even though Thandi is across the world, all children share many similaries- a lesson that should be remembered, especially in modern times. I will definately use this in my classroom someday. Never have I seen such a great childrens book that is infused with anthropology and the study of a culture!

5 out of 5 stars Shows the pure heart of a child.......2000-03-22

I bought this book today and read it with my 10 year old niece. It has exceptionally beautiful photographs of the Ndebele people. It is a story that reminds us that the simple things in life are the most precious. Thandi tells the story of her people and family and her best friend, a chicken. She is a proud and pure hearted child that shares the culture of the Ndebele people with us. This is a lovely story that is a fun, educational, easy to read one that made me feel young at heart again. I'll be needing an additional copy to share with my grandaughter.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding children's story!.......1997-12-14

As a reading tutor, I have enjoyed sharing this book with my 4th grade students. It examins the differences of people, our different cultures, and is a colorful and enchanting story. My kids, both boys and girls are facinated by this book, and we always continue a dialogue with it. The recognize the author, as one their parents respect, and enjoy talking about it and laughing about the silly chicken. We have talked about trying to paint houses with a chicken feather, and may jsut try to do this during black history month! I adore this book!

We have 2 kids (9 and 11) and have had daily bible story time with each of them since they were infants. Tom Zeigler's book is one of the best books for new and creative ideas for devotionals that are both fun and practical. We often use this book when looking for a new devotional idea for our kids. I highly recommend this book. It includes practical ideas, fun activities, and ways to get the principles of the bible in to your kids' hearts, not just their heads.

Growing up, my family did the picking up and putting away around the house on a daily basis, and I washed dishes daily, but a housekeeper came in once a week to do the heavy cleaning. My mother ran a successful business, and didn't do much cooking or cleaning at home. Therefore, I didn't learn the way most women do - watching their mothers. Fast forward to my first apartment - hovering over my very own toilet, I wasn't exactly sure how to clean it. Joni Hilton works the house from top to bottom, room by room, explaining exactly what kind of dirt can build up in which places and how to most efficiently get rid of it. She even tells you her favorite cleaing products. Other housekeeping books are such boring Martha Stewart manuals that not only are they a drag to read, but they leave you feeling completely incapable of ever having a clean house. Joni Hilton's book is a quick, funny, light read, and her clean house is very attainable.

    5 out of 5 stars Motivating!.......2001-07-28

This book is great. She gets right to the point and lets you know exactly what constitutes a "clean" home. If you want a good housekeeping reference book, this would be a good purchase.

Before you buy or read this book, you should know that this is NOT the same author of _Teach_Them_Diligently_ or _The_Heart_of_Anger_. The author of this book is Louis A. Priolo, not Louis Paul Priolo. I made the mistake and found myself on a wild charismatic ride of Christians who must speak in tongues to be authentic Christians, Christians and even automobiles who can be demon-possessed and other tales colored by what I consider bad biblical discernment.

I don't discount the story, but I do want people to be aware that this is not only a different author, but a different theology as well.
