Death is a way of life for the Snowberger family, since they run a funeral parlor out of their Mississippi home with the motto "We live to serve." Still, when 94-year-old Great-great-aunt Florentine Snowberger dies in the vegetable garden, no one can truly be prepared, even though she'd been bidding "good night and good-bye" to the family every night since she turned 90. Florentine's death is hard on 10-year-old Comfort, since the two were so close, even co-writing the Fantastic (and Fun) Funeral Food for Family and Friends. It's no surprise, then, when the annoyingly overwrought emotional displays of her young cousin Peach Shuggars and the sudden iciness of her alleged best friend Declaration Johnson send Comfort over the edge. Thank goodness for her shaggy "feel-good" dog Dismay who can eradicate all bad feelings with a single slobbery lick.

When a dangerous flash flood comes to Snapfinger on the day of Florentine's funeral, Comfort learns again that life is full of surprises, good and bad, and that, ultimately, it's just good to be alive. This warm, witty novel, told in Comfort's voice (and a mix of letters, recipes, articles, and helpful hints), celebrates the joys of family, of prune bread, of freshly sharpened pencils, and of "each little bird that sings." The fairly constant philosophizing about life and death, the unusual character names (Tidings, Comfort, Joy), and the narrator's oft-precocious voice may fray a nerve or two, but readers will find more than enough humor and good old-fashioned storytelling here to make up for it. (Ages 8 to 12) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Ten-year-old Comfort Snowberger has attended 247 funerals--her family owns the local funeral home, after all. And even though Great-uncle Edisto keeled over with a heart attack and Great-great-aunt Florentine dropped dead--just like that--six months later, Comfort knows how to deal with loss, or so she thinks. She's more concerned with avoiding her crazy cousin Peach and trying to figure out why her best friend, Declaration, suddenly won't talk to her. But life is full of surprises. And the biggest one of all is learning what it takes to handle them.
In this heartfelt and quintessentially Southern coming-of-age novel, Comfort will charm young readers with her wit, her warmth, and her struggles as she learns about life, loss, and ultimately, triumph.
I ncludes reader's guide and a biography of the author.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, bubbling, but bittersweet book.......2007-09-02

While organizing books in my basement, I came across a hand-me-down with a cool-looking cover. I read the back and was attracted to the content. I decided I would start reading it to my kids--6, 8, and 10--before bed each night. The author has a very cute way of writing and created such great characters that amused my kids right from the beginning. They especially laughed out loud at everything Merry said.

SPOILER WARNING:

During a flash flood that nearly kills Comfort and Peach, Dismay--funeral dog extraordinaire--gets swept away by the rising water's current. I stopped there for the night and came down to find out what happens. After reading the other reviews and finding out that Dismay does die, I was so sad. I decided to tell the kids the next morning so that they'd be prepared when I read before bed that night. I didn't want to upset them before bed! They took it pretty well and wanted to go on reading that night.

Parents, if you're going to read this book aloud to your children, I hope you can get through it better than I did. I actually had to have my husband take over at certain parts because I couldn't get the words through the lump in my throat nor see for the tears in my eyes! It was a little embarrassing and my daughter said, "Mom, you're weird." LOL

My 8- and 10-year-old enjoyed this book more than my 6-year-old. He lost interest here and there and wasn't interested in hearing the end.

All in all, this book was wonderfully written and was tender and sweet. Death is a part of life and it was nice to talk about the subject with my kids after our nightly sessions. I'm really glad I found this book and got to share it with my babies.

4 out of 5 stars Each Little Bird That Sings.......2007-06-04

This book is about a girl surounded by death and all the drama that comes with it. I recomend this book to anyone who likes alot of drama and excitment. I also think if you like to read this would be a great book for you. The author of this book really expresses them self, and makes you feel like you were there too.
This book isn`t very hard to read but some of the words are a little tricky, and they are sometimes unfamilar and new too. So if you would like to read this book I hope you enjoy it as much as I did too!

Have you ever been to a funeral before?Well Comfort has been to 247 funeral. Her father owns the town funeral home and she's been to all of the funerals. So she's surrounded by death.

She can tell you which cassorole to eat and who to sit by and not to sit by.And number 1 on the not to sit by is Peach. He gets on Comfort's nerves.Peach is Comfort's little cousin.Comfort hates Peach.

This book reminds me of myself because sometimes my little cousin gets on my nerves.

I give this book 4 stars.I give this book 4 stars because I thought it was going to be more intresting.I thought Comfort was going to run away with her dog Dimay.

I recommend this book to someone that likes sadness.

5 out of 5 stars Each Little Bird That Sings.......2007-04-17

Each Little Bird That Sings by Deborah Wiles is a young adult realistic fiction novel. The story takes place in Snapfinger, Mississippi in present times. The main character, Comfort Snowberger, is a ten year old girl who lives at a funeral home right near the cemetery. Her best friend is Dismay, her wonderful, "feel-good dog". Wiles writes about Comfort's challenges with death, fear, anger, and her ever-so-annoying cousin, Peach. Meanwhile, Comfort's old best friend, Declaration, seems to be getting meaner by the second. So when worst comes to worst, friends are lost, yet the future still holds promise.
I liked most of this book, but I'll have to say this part was one of my favorites. In one scene about 1/5 of the way into the book, Comfort is making her way up to Listening Rock and describes everything. After just one paragraph you get a crystal clear picture in your head. "A thick stand of rose of Sharon bushes guarded the path with strong woody branches full of wide pink blooms." is one of the descriptive sentences from the novel. This section made me feel as though I was actually there. I felt calm but excited to see what would happen next.
This is my evaluation of the book. Overall I thought Each Little Bird That Sings is a pretty good book. I think there are two morals to this book: 1) don't judge people immediately and 2) to forgive. This book was little bit easy for my reading level, but I still enjoyed it. A lot of this book was sad or scary so I will probably remember it well. I would have to think about whether this book should be on my favorite bookshelf, but in the end I would probably add it to my favorites.

3 out of 5 stars a little twisted but not erotically.......2007-05-27

definitely not the erotica I was expecting. there's some interesting twisted stuff but if you're looking for a turn on in a traditional erotic fashion, this might not do it. interesting read tho.

4 out of 5 stars Classic erotica.......2007-01-18

Beautifully written erotic short stories exploring a range of sexual and sensual indulgences, some explicit and some sublime.

5 out of 5 stars Pure genius.......2006-08-09

I cannot praise Anais enough. Her writing captures you emotionally and then sets you afire with her raw sexuality. The book is mesmerizing. Pure passion.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-07-29

This is a wonderful collection of erotic writing from a true master of the genre. I have my grave doubts though if men can truely appreciate this work.

Not as good as The Delta of Venus. If you are interested in classic erotica I would try Delta of Venus instead.

"Early one morning, Goose sets out to make a nest." Honk! The first place Goose finds looks nice and warm. But "Silly Little Goose!" That pen is for the pigs! Then Goose finds someplace nice and soft, a rag box in the tool shed. But "Silly Little Goose!" The cat and her kittens already live there. Lovable, muddled Goose finally encounters an old straw hat, which readers have seen tumbling throughout the story. It's warm, soft, quiet, cozy -- perfect! 5 out of 5 stars Incredibly popular with my boys!.......2007-08-23

We were given this book by our doctor after a check-up - I figured it was just a nice treat for the kids and they'd push it aside. WRONG! It turned out to be their FAVORITE book for over a year. It got so worn I bought the hardcover copy and we still read it on most days.

There are pictures of all different animals, so if your kids are learning to make animal sounds, it's fun for them to point at the different animals and tell you what they say.

5 out of 5 stars A must for toddlers.......2005-10-12

This book was given to my daughter for her first birthday in the paperback form. It quickly became her favorite and she even took it to bed some nights! She really liked the large amount of pictures, simple plot, and simple short sentences - it kept her attention span. Furthermore, the story really won her over when my husband or I would make the animal sounds. At the end, all the animals in the story were pictured together and we made a game of identifying each animal by having her point to the correct animal when we named it. Eventually, the cover came off the book from being well loved and it was finally lost at day care for show-n-tell. I just ordered a new copy!

4 out of 5 stars Charming story for pre-schoolers & kindergarteners.......2002-03-07

My 6 year old and 3 1/2 year old love this story. They got it for Easter last year, and we have read it many times. They love to see the silly places the goose chooses for her nest. The illustrations are appealing--a nice Easter basket story!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Audience would determin best fit.......2007-08-05

My son asked for this book after seeing it at school. I think it must have been more entertaining in the hands of the librarian than in mine. He seemed to really really want it and because he was an advanced reader we try to follow-up with anything he deems challenging. But, the larger text meant to be very creative and artistic can be hard to read and the smaller text is just too small. Switching between text makes it difficult for young readers and perhaps "older" readings who are trying to read and "show the pictures".

BUT, the audience of this book may NEVER have been a young 5 1/2 year old reader (reading 1st grade level books) - and for that you can't fault a very unique, educational even for adults, and humorously illustrated book.

I think if I were a pre-school or Elem. teacher, it'd be an awesome book to have around - especially for the kids who are getting board with A,B,Cs and want to look at cool illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars nice ESL teaching tool.......2007-06-27

This is a good way to introduce common idioms to young ESL students. Many of the sayings in here we don't use any more, but still, they are part of our culture, so it's not a waste of time to go through them. The pictures are really lively and fun.

5 out of 5 stars My preschooler loves this book.......2005-05-15

We have spent countless hours reading this book and discussing all the different idioms. She remembers the phrases from the pictures (she doesn't read yet) and sometimes uses them correctly in conversation later. It's fun and it's educational. What more could you want?

5 out of 5 stars Super.......2004-03-08

This is great book for exposing children to idioms. I first present some of the expressions to my students and have them try to explain them. Afterward, they have fun going back and finding the actual meaning. We usually do this around the time that we read Amelia Bedelia. The children illustrate an expression of their own choosing and the rest of us try to guess what the expression is. There are many extension activities to do along with this fun book. It is a great way to immerse chioldren inour language and get them excited about it. Lots of fun!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful reference book.......2004-01-16

This is a wonderful book for researching what idioms mean. It has delightful pictures and very clear explanations.
It would be very useful for children in third and fourth grade or for use with people learning English. Even though I have a master's degree and I am an avid reader, I found some idioms that I have never heard before. I am planning to give some copies to some third grade teachers that I know. Also, I bought a copy for my granddaughter.

5 out of 5 stars Familiar Fable.......2007-07-25

This fable tells about the lazy animals who did not want to help the hen. They let her do all the work, but did not do a thing themselves. Then at the end when the hen reaps of the fruit of her labor, all of a sudden they want to share in that fruit. However, the hen gets it all to herself and they get nothing.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic.......2007-05-30

I purchased this book for my children and did it bring back memories! I had it read to me when I was little. So the story line is cute and teaches a valuable lesson with the moral the lazy cat, dog, and mouse do not get the snack. All of my children from 2-6 love this story, it never grows old.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional telling of a classic tale with a more positive ending .......2006-10-23

Her ability to cook empowers this little red hen to motivate her housemates. Help me with some of the housework if you want cake. A final illustration shows all the animals working, sweeping and dusting!

After reading the story as it is written, follow along with Heather Forest's Little Red Hen from the album, Sing me a Story. End on that final illustration with her words, "Sharing the work makes working fun."

Different versions may use different characters. This one uses the traditional Dog, Cat, Mouse.

It's always hard for Baby Bird and his mama to say good-bye on their way to school and work in the morning. But Mama finds a lilting, lyrical way of showing how her love is with her child all the time--and his love is with her, too.
But even when I'm far away,
this love I have will stay.
and wrap itself around you
every minute of the day.
Warm, reassuring feelings emanate from this lovely picture book. Mama Bird tells her child how her love slips inside his lunch box, sits upon his shoulder when he sings a happy song, and snuggles on his pillow while he naps. Jane Dyer, illustrator of the bestselling Time for Bed, creates positively touchable watercolors of a pudgy-cheeked preschooler bird and his working mom. Hints of hearts nestle playfully on the pages: on the blackboard under the letter H, and sewn onto his pillowcase. Oh My Baby, Little One will resonate deeply for moms and kids alike, and may make daily separations just a little bit easier.
So blow a kiss and wave good-bye--
my baby, don't you cry.
This love is always with you,
like the sun is with the sky.
(Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

Mama bird explains to baby bird, who misses her, how her love is with him throughout the day while she is at work. She tells him that she also misses him and finds his love with her. She also tells him that her greatest joy is when she comes home to him.

This is a good book for a working mother to read to her child (starting as young as possible) to reassure him/her and open up a conversation about the topic whenever needed. The pictures look just like my grandson when I babysit and he misses mommy.

Gift Of The Tortoise: A Musical Journey Through Southern Africa by Ladysmith Black Mambazo includes a song that the children sing when their mothers return from trading in the city (which may take days). It also has a song by a girl when she receives a gift from her father who works at a distance from the family and only sees them a few weeks a year.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful message!.......2007-07-12

I bought this book for myself when my first child was still a baby. It helped me with the drop off at preschool when she was a baby to know that our love was with each other when we were apart! I bought them this year when my sister-in-laws had their first baby girls and were headed back to work and they found them just as moving and sweet. What a great gift for any mom at any stage!

5 out of 5 stars Childrens Books.......2007-05-13

This is one of the most beautiful and tender stories I've ever read about a working momy and the seperation she and her baby son must go through every day when she goes off to work and he goes to school. It helped me and my son a lot knowing that other families go through a similar process of separation anxiety. It also has beautiful pictures and eases the insecurities most little children go through when the aren't with their parents, I really recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Illustrations.......2006-02-28

Large, soft, colorful illustrations attracted me to this book that I found at a book fair several years ago. I purchased this book for my "when I have children" book collection, and now that I have a son to read it to, it is a favorite for both of us. The story is a sweet rhyme and not too "wordy" for my toddler who does not sit still for very long. The illustrations are so pleasing to me, that I just completed a search for other books illustrated by Jane Dyer, and am excited by my new finds.

5 out of 5 stars Finally I have made it through without tears..........2005-03-18

Stumbled across this in the library, (always scope out the books there first, in order to make sure "we" like them), the first oh, ten times, I read the book to my daughter I couldn't get through it without almost bawling. (And I only leave her twice a week, with her Grandma or Aunt). I don't think she understood (at 10 months) what was a matter with Mom. Now that I own it and have read it about 30 times, I can get through without tears and she really enjoys the story. It is told in a lovely rhyme, with beautiful illustrations.

If you are a working mom, or sending your child off to school, I highly recommend this book.

Book Description

Based on a favorite song from the author's childhood, the little brown wren who is the star of this quilt is accompanied by an impressive array of feathered friends, wreaths, baskets, fruits, flowers, leaves, and patterns and helps others avoid the 'pitfalls' of quiltmaking while offering helpful hints and suggestions for beginners and advanced quilters alike. She shares with you her insights on hand applique, fabric selections, special techniques, design possibilities, border applique designs, and quilt assembly. Full-size patterns accompany this impressive work. AUTHORBIO: Margaret Docherty, who was born in Hartlepool, England, learned to sew as a child. She became interested in quilting in the late 1980s and was greatly influenced by the work and writing of American quilters. Her main interest is in traditional hand applique, but she has experimented with most techniques and styles. She makes time to quilt from her busy schedule as a pediatrician by sewing mostly at night - a legacy from her days as a junior hospital doctor. REVIEW: Provides fine examples and instructions for both beginner and those well versed in quilting traditions. Packed with applique patterns. -Reviewer's Bookwatch May 2000

A wonderful book with patterns, conversation, and instructions. A delight for everyone who loves applique either in large or smaller projects. Highly recommend.

This quilting book provides great illustrations
and complete instructions. I am looking forward
to making some of the blocks using the colors
that are suggested.

5 out of 5 stars Eye candy and inspiration for years to come.......2007-07-08

Plan on taking this book off of the shelf whenever you want a little inspiration for another quilt. This quilt is truly an heirloom - not one you're going to sleep under. The quilt itself will take your breath away and, hopefully, you'll be inspired to try some of the techniques, even if you aren't as ambitious as Docherty is. I went right out and bought some new fat quarters of fabric that I thought might do for some of the squares, using her approach to choosing fabric, and will start small, with only one block. Her innotative techniques and exquisite results make her both an artist and a skilled artisan. Her writing style make her an excellent teacher. Don't pass this one by.

If you want to take embellishment over the top, this is for you. Excellent source of inspiration for applique that is so special. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Little Brown Bird.......2006-07-02

The book is a wonderfully designed pattern for hand applique. The entire book is devoted to the creation of one design masterpiece featuring many squares of wreaths, flowers, half square borders and birds. The overall border is exquisite and intricate. The author's patterns and directions are excellent and easy to follow. She includes a chapter on how to select fabrics to create the shadings of flowers and birds without ever being a bird or flower fabric. She teaches what to look for. The only changes I comtemplate making are redesigning some of the birds.

With sweet illustrations by veteran children's book artists Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey, this lovely counting song will invoke squeals of delight from babies and toddlers. They'll love counting down as first five little ducks, then four, then three, then two, then one go out to play, not to return. 4 out of 5 stars Raffi - Five Little Ducks.......2007-01-10

I bought this as a follow up to "Wheels on the Bus" which my daughter just loves. The story/song is really cute to read, but I'm disappointed with the illustrations. Still a good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Very cute storey.......2006-02-18

My son likes this book and loves to say "quack quack". It's a simple story, and he enjoys reading it as well as flipping through the pages. As it goes from 5 ducks to 4 ducks and all the way down to 1, he counts on his fingers how many ducks are left. It's a great book. I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars My son LOVES LOVES LOVES this book...Quack Quack..........2005-10-30

Cutest book, beautiful graphics and so fun to sing together, he can't get enough of this one and runs around quack quacking day and night - just precious! A fun, happy, sweet read!

    Book Description

A newly hatched Emperor penguin wants more than anything to look like his tall, strong father. But when his own fluffy gray feathers start to fall out, Little Penguin is sure his wish will never come true. It takes a long ocean journey and some gentle words of wisdom from his mother before he realizes that he has become what he most wanted to be after all.

Nature lovers of all ages will delight in the captivating illustrations and the reassuring story about growing up. On every page, lavish embossing illuminates the frosty beauty of the Antarctic setting and adds intriguing texture to the feathers and footprints of the creatures that live there.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Tries to cover too much ground.......2005-02-27

I was hoping for a book that focused on the 'real' experiences of a baby penguin, and the losing of the feathers does this, but the rest of the book is a bit diluted. The author tries to touch upon the baby being like its daddy and its getting lost, all while undergoing a physical transformation, but I would have preferred a more focused story. The encounters with other animals are extraneous, but I was hoping for something more informational than entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless, Familiar Tale with some Fact-Learning, too........2004-01-04

This durable, thick cross between a board book and a regular paged book for young children follows a familiar tale. Little penguin is born, doesn't follow parent's direction... gets temporarily lost... finds a wise creature of another sort who assists him in finding his way...begins losing feathers and then is refound and found out that losing his feathers is just perfect..

Sounds like the lives of many of US, only in in Animal Sense as well as many other books and legends.

The reason this book works is because it is timeless and you can engage any age child in conversation around the story, the illustrations, the situations the little Penguins is in which may be similar to the child's.

I also learned a very fun fact right on the first two pages... so you might gain more than you think in reading this colorfully illustrated title.
