    Book Description

The definitive work on the subject, it offers you comprehensive and accurate coverage of the theory and techniques of ground water development. Provides not only a general overview of the topic with applications but also incorporates sufficient detail to be of use to professionals involved in any phase of ground water. Divided into three parts, the text traces the progression of the study of ground water from its origin through its development and exploitation. Part one deals mainly with the nature of ground water and where it can be found. Part two considers the parameters related to water well design and construction. In part three, there is a thorough review of well and well field operation, including monitoring for environmental protection. Although the focus is on high-capacity ground water producing installations, most of the material is also applicable to lower-yield wells.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have .......2007-03-25

I discovered this book several years ago. I teach in a school with mostly immigrant children who have little background knowledge of the heroes presented here. They love borrowing my copy to read during independent reading and I have used the book with my reading groups as well. The biographies are concise, interesting, and offer links to on-line information as well. I am such a fan that I have actually bought copies for each of my students to have for their own every year as an end-of-year/end of state testing gift. My students love to nominate candidates they would like to have included in a second volume. Not only are my students becoming better readers, but they are eager to write after being exposed to this book. Thank goodness for Dennis Deneberg and Lorraine Roscoe!

5 out of 5 stars Love the Book....Love Dr. Denenberg.......2006-07-31

I was a student of Dr. Denenberg's during the fall semester of 2001. I was so lucky to have had to opportunity to learn from such an amazing person. I use many of his teachings in my classroom today. I love reading this book and my students love it too! I've actually purchased copies for my friends and student teachers. This book is an asset to your library - and one that you'll treasure for years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2006-01-18

I went to a workshop recently where Dr. Denenberg presented, and am so excited to have a copy of his book. As a teacher I can see many uses for this book in the classroom. The stories really grab you and make you want to know more about each hero. I especially like that the authors included a diving in section for each hero. They give the reader other sources to find more information about their hero. I hope Dr. Denenberg writes many more books! I love his work.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and engaging.......2006-01-18

When I first found this book, I was impressed with the simple, accessible, straight-forward presentation of REAL WORLD heroes - for kids. When they get a chance to learn about the accomplishments of these people, they can have a real vision for themselves and for their lives. This is the kind of book that can make a positive impact on our world, a kid at a time, or better.

When I next read through the book, I was very impressed with the writing, for it presents a person (aka hero), his/her accomplishment(s), and then asks the readers to relate this to their own lives. The call it "Explore" - it is an invitation for the reader to make a part of the hero story become a part of them. What you are left with is the possibility that I can, that I am, that we are... It is a calling to be a hero, ourselves.

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Inspiring Book!.......2003-08-21

Dr. Dennis Denenberg and Lorraine Roscoe have written a book so inspiring and appropriate for children that this book should be in every classroom in the United States! Hard as if may be to believe, I have literally bought more than 60 copies of this book to share with parents and educators around the country. Every one I've spoken with who has seen and read this book has nothing but rave reviews to give it!

4 out of 5 stars Early Hollywood Scandal.......2006-11-08

Andy Edmonds' book about Roscoe Arbuckle's murder trial during the 1920s is an exceptional read for fans of the silent movie era. Not only does it include information about Arbuckle's life before and after the trial, but it includes details provided from those who knew him best including his wives and the wife of Buster Keaton.

Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle was one of the most beloved silent movie comedians of his time. His popularity soared before Chaplin or Keaton had really made it on their own. Children loved him for his wonderful prat-falls and large physical presence, and adults loved him for his sweetness and his ability to make anyone laugh. That all changed when a small time actress and well known prostitute Virginia Rappe died at a party thrown by Arbuckle. Her death was called murder, and Arbuckle was accused of having raped the girl so brutally that he ruptured her bladder in the process. The media turned the trial into a frenzy, making Arbuckle the scapegoat of Hollywood, in turn leading to the implementation of the Hays Office.

What this book fails to do is entirely convince the reader that there was a pre-conceived conspiracy against Arbuckle. Edmonds makes a fool-proof plea for the comedian's innocence of the crime he was charged with, further supporting the acquittal with hindsight, but she does not provide enough evidence to prove her assertion that the party in San Francisco was all a set-up. Still, it is a fascinating read on one of the most damaging events in the actor's life.

3 out of 5 stars It just goes to show.......2005-10-23

After reading this (and other Arbuckle books)
I've realized there is a moral to the story.
If someone becomes violently ill at a party
    you're hosting......
    send them to the hospital.
    V. Rappe's bladder infection could have been treated,
and she would perhaps have lived, and Arbuckle's
    career might have survived.

    4 out of 5 stars Revealing.......2004-09-10

Roscoe Arbuckle was one of the most popular comics of the silent film era, but it was inevitable that he would fall from grace and in a round-about way, he brought a lot of it on himself. The author clearly points out that Roscoe was well on the way to self destruction. He was a frequent buyer of bootleg booze during the era of prohibition. He was in trouble with the IRS and despite his million dollar a year salary, his reckless spending was already out of control. Its even been suggested that cocaine was involved at some of the big parties that Arbuckle had. Then comes Virginia Rappe and Maude Delmont, two Hollywood whores with $ signs in their eyes and larsony in their hearts. They saw the opportunity to make some cash and didn't care who they destroyed to get it. Delmont was hardly a stranger to the criminal world and Rappe was a well known slut with several abortions under her belt (No pun intended) Accusations of rape (with a Coke bottle no less)during a wild party was the begining of one of the biggest trials in California legal history. Equally appalling is how self righteous, sanctimonious and moralistic Hollywood became after the scandal broke. Most of the big name directors had round-the-clock mistresses and readily consorted with gangsters like Capone. Arbuckle would be aquitted of the charges, but the damage had been done. Forced to direct under an assumed name (William B. Goode and Reel Comedies) Roscoe faced a hard climb uphill and died on the verge of a comeback.

5 out of 5 stars Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle Was Destroyed By Hollywood Greed.......2003-10-04

Andy Edmonds does an admirable job in detailing the tragic life of one of Hollywood's first and foremost comic actors, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. Long before Lloyd, Langdon, Keaton, even Chaplin, there was Arbuckle. Aside from precursors Max Linder and John Bunny and a very few others who were brilliant innovators in their own right, Arbuckle was the first great American comic star of silent film. From 1912 to 1921 Arbuckle was the reigning king of slapstick. Incredibly agile for a 280 pounder, Arbuckle did wonderful comic pantomime and made dozens of memorable shorts with silent comedy legends like Mabel Normand, Minta Durfee, Al Saint John, and his best friend, Buster Keaton as his sidekicks. As we all know, Arbuckle, who wanted more autonomy on his own productions, was framed by greedy, spiteful studio heads (including Paramount chief Adolph Zukor) on a frumped up rape charge. The incident allegedly occurred at an infamous 1921 party in a San Francisco hotel. Of course, it was all a lie. Roscoe, targeted for his insubordination to the totalitarian studio system--- was unjustly persecuted as the poster boy for Hollywood hedonism and excess. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Most studio executives at the time lived self-indulgent lives that would make the inhabitants of Soddom and Gemmorah blush. Worst of all, Arbuckle was completely innocent of the phoney charges of rape. Spiteful over Roscoe's switching studios, certain detestable movie executives paid a bigamist and professional correspondent ("Bambina Maude Delmont") to testify against him on the fabricated rape charge. The alleged rape victim ----Virgnia Rappe (ironic first name, isn't it)---died as a result of internal hemmoraging. While Delmont claimed Rappe's death was due to Arbuckle's shoving a bottle inside her (an incident conveniently witnessed solely by the correspondent), medical results proved her death was actually due to a botched abortion she had recently received. Rappe was an infamous Hollywood [lady] who had had more abortions than even she could remember. She was also being treated for an advanced case of venereal disease. Most telling of all, she was known for attending parties, getting stoned, ripping off her clothes, and running into the streets crying "rape." After enduring three separate trials, and despite his eventually being found not guilty in a court of law, in the court of public opinion Fatty's career was utterly destroyed. He was labled a "fat pervert" by ignorant mobs who were susceptible to the vicious vitriol leveled at him by pseudo-moralist studio executives whose only real concern was saving their own asses and preserving their financial bottom lines. The once beloved comedian was literally spat on by men, women, and children who should have known better than to fall prey to the slander perpetrated by corrupt Hollywood mogols. Roscoe's films were pulled from circulation. His contracts were all cancelled and his name became associated with all that was rotten in Hollywood. Of course, the moguls who destroyed him continued on making millions. After the tragic 1921 episode Arbuckle was basically blacklisted in the industry and had to turn to directing under the pseudonym "William Goodrich." But even then jobs were few and far in-between. He longed to return to making people laugh on the screen but his popularity never rebounded even after he was allowed to return to acting. Roscoe's final years were sad, and he turned to the bottle. His Hollywood friends, particularly Buster Keaton, stood by the man whom he described as being "very shy, naive, and innocent." Keaton, in particular, fought to have studios give his friend work. But by the late 1920s Arbuckle was all but forgotten except as the cruel butt of tasteless jokes. Arbuckle never understood how or why he came to be so despised. When Roscoe died in 1933, Keaton said the cause was a broken heart. I enthusiastically recommend the purchase of this well-researched and well-written biography. At the time she was working on this biography on Roscoe, Andy Edmonds had already established a fine reputation for herself as the biographer of another tragic Hollywood legend, Thelma Todd. But this book is extra special. Why? Because it helps to publicly exonerate a wronged human being simply by revealing the truth. Arbuckle was a good, kind man who was actually very well-mannered and a gentleman around women----assuredly more gentlemanly than the hedonistic moguls who daily employed the casting couch as their unique version of "screen testing" of young starlets. Keaton put it best when he said that Roscoe was too naive for his own good. In honor of Roscoe Conklin Arbuckle's memory, I will end this review by stating that Roscoe was a great man and a great talent. He was always embarrassed when people referred to him as "Fatty." He deserved better. Here's to you, Roscoe.

    Book Description

Grandma Moses and her paintings first came to public attention in 1940, when she was 80 years old. Her folk art, down-home personality, and background as a farmer and homemaker charmed the American public. By the time she died at the age of 101, she had completed over 1600 works of art and had established an international reputation. The work of "the white-haired girl," a self-taught artist who was a regular news feature for two decades, remained enormously popular at home and abroad even in the years after her death.

For this reevaluation of the work of Grandma Moses, Jane Kallir contributes an authoritative introduction and presents a catalogue that illustrates 87 of Moses' most important works. Kallir traces Moses' development as an artist from the first embroidered landscapes to the glorious paintings of her "old-age style." The Grandma Moses myth is tackled from various perspectives. Roger Cardinal examines the artist's working methods, exploring the relationship between the actual regional landscape and her interpretation of the area. Michael D. Hall places Moses within the context of contemporary artistic and social movements of the 1940s and 1950s. Lynda Roscoe Hartigan reveals how memory and imagination merge in the paintings. And Judith E. Stein discusses the role of gender in shaping the artist's reputation in the postwar years.

4 out of 5 stars The Long - Ago Mother Of Us All.......2004-07-12

Prepared in conjunction with "a major exhibition, organized and circulated by Art Services International," Grandma Moses In The 21st Century (2001) represents an academic reassessment of the celebrated folk artist's work for audiences of the new millennium. While the two longest sections (Roger Cardinal's excellent essay, "The Sense of Time and Place," and Jane Kallir's commentary on the 87 plates) are sound, other segments underscore the wide cultural divide that continues to exist between the abstraction - tending perspective of some art scholars and the general public's capacity for spontaneous appreciation for various kinds of painting and other cultural products.

The paintings of Anna Mary Robertson Moses, which are predominantly landscapes, were initially and earnestly created by an uneducated, unprivileged, "common" "farm woman" of advanced years as gifts for her family, friends, and social peers. When brought to mass public attention in the Forties, the paintings were widely embraced by Americans of all walks of life for their inherent combination of unique talent, nostalgia for family, home, and community, apparent simplicity of method, sentimentality, anecdotal style, and vision of the country's agricultural past. Indeed, most of the paintings suggest a bucolic, Eden - like utopia in which regular and vigorous hard work is nonetheless a necessity for all able - bodied citizens.

Though Moses' paintings were initially embraced and promoted by elements within the cultural elite of the Forties, the wider public continued to cherish - and avidly purchase commercial reproductions of - Moses' work long after the art world that had discovered her had lost interest. Whether photographed with President Truman, interviewed in her home by Edward R. Murrow, or appearing on the cover of Life magazine, by the advent of the Fifties, Moses was celebrated as a quintessentially American icon in the tradition of Benjamin Franklin, Johnny Appleseed, Washington Irving, Clara Barton, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, or Gary Cooper.

The process of promoting Moses was assisted by several key figures over the decades, but in Moses' case, nothing about her public image was fabricated, and her paintings, like her persona, sold themselves. As a hard - working, elderly widow who advocated traditional American values like industry and self - sufficiency, and whose appearance and mannerisms bespoke of a bygone era, Moses perfectly embodied an idealized representation of the archetypal "benign great grandmother," a figure most people, regardless of background, are sensitive to. Only 8 years after her death at 101 in 1961, the United States Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp bearing her name and a detail from her painting 'July Fourth.'

There is probably no major American artist whose work needs academic interpretation less than Moses', and while critical assessments of her work and life are welcomed, the balance of the essays in Grandma Moses In The 21st Century read like superfluous, self - important, and slightly pretentious padding, especially since the paintings speak perfectly well for themselves in a plain visual language assessable to all.

However, John Cardinal's investigative, straight forward, and always - relevant discussion of Moses is a model of what a good art essay should be, and Jane Kallir's plate - by - plate commentary provides the necessary factual information required without straying into unnecessary theory. The 87 color plates are gloriously reproduced and represent all periods of the artist's creative life.

Those who would like more information on Moses' life and work may also want to seek out a copy of Grandma Moses: My Life's History (1948), sadly out of print but still widely available via secondhand sources.

5 out of 5 stars A catalog of an elderly painter's folk art.......2001-06-06

Grandma Moses In The 21st Century is a catalog of an elderly painter's folk art and provides an excellent survey of her works including an intricate examination of her working methods, her interpretive process, and her role in the context of modern art and social movements of her times, in the 1940s and 50s. The result is an excellent catalog which features important analyses of her achievements and displays her notable works in lavish, full page color.

      Book Description

In 1932, Wolfgang Pauli was a world-renowned physicist and had already done the work that would win him the 1945 Nobel Prize. He was also in pain. His mother had poisoned herself after his father's involvement in an affair. Emerging from a brief marriage with a cabaret performer, Pauli drank heavily, quarreled frequently and sometimes publicly, and was disturbed by powerful dreams. He turned for help to C. G. Jung, setting a standing appointment for Mondays at noon. Thus bloomed an extraordinary intellectual conjunction not just between a physicist and a psychologist but between physics and psychology. Eighty letters, written over twenty-six years, record that friendship. This artful translation presents them in English for the first time.

Though Jung never analyzed Pauli formally, he interpreted more than 400 of his dreams--work that bore fruit later in Psychology and Alchemy and The Analysis of Dreams. As their acquaintance developed, Jung and Pauli exchanged views on the content of their work and the ideas of the day. They discussed the nature of dreams and their relation to reality, finding surprising common ground between depth psychology and quantum physics. Their collaboration resulted in the combined publication of Jung's treatise on synchronicity and Pauli's essay on archetypal ideas influencing Kepler's writings in The Interpretation of Nature and the Psyche. Over time, their correspondence shaped and reshaped their understanding of the principle they called synchronicity, a term Jung had suggested earlier.

Through the association of these two pioneering thinkers, developments in physics profoundly influenced the evolution of Jungian psychology. And many of Jung's abiding themes shaped how Pauli--and, through him, other physicists--understood the physical world. Of clear appeal to historians of science and anyone investigating the life and work of Pauli or Jung, this portrait of an incredible friendship will also draw readers interested in human creativity as well as those who merely like to be present when great minds meet.

5 out of 5 stars Semper Fidelis Praise for Troutman's Fantastic New Book!.......2006-02-28

        Dear Amazon.com staff;

Congratulations! You outdid yourselves by having Ms. Kathryn Troutman's latest book, "Military to Federal Career Guide," in your resource library.

After serving 24 years in the Marine Corps and ten years as a Career Development Coach for the Department of Defense at Camp Pendleton, CA, home to over 40,000 Marines and Sailors of the 1st Marine Division, I am pleased to praise the name of Ms. Kathryn Troutman for creating a tool that will aid the military person in becoming a Federal employee. The book "Military to Federal Career Guide" is that tool.

Military personnel respond well to organized information and the "Military to Federal Career Guide" is just that, organized! This fantastic book helps military personnel to identify their transferable skills that they possess that will relate to their desired goals as a Federal Government employee.

Ms. Troutman realized that since military personnel use steps and sequences to accomplish their goals, that she must create the path for the military personnel to travel to the government resume and with this book, she has done just that.

I endorse this book so much because I believe that any military person that uses this book from beginning to end, following all of the steps and examples, will have a far greater chance for a job offer from the Federal government than someone that doesn't use the "Military to Federal Career Guide" book.

Semper Fidelis to the staff of Amazon.com for your professionalism.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended by Fred E. Coon, Chairman & CEO of recruiting and executive placement agency Stewart, Cooper & Coon, Inc........2006-01-23

What I really like about this book is the easy-to-follow layout. It is clear and I know how to find an issue area I wish to learn more about. I also feel the content is solid and the examples are as good as it gets for this difficult area to write about. Kathryn takes the mystery out of understanding the Federal process and makes it easier by laying out the issue areas clearly and providing examples for each. She also devotes an appropriate amount of time to the dreaded KSA's and how to cut them down to size and present your background well enough to make it through the maze of the Federal selection processes.

Kathryn also has excellent resources listed and her abundant research on the subject shows in the material that is presented. Like my book, it comes with a CD-ROM that has just excellent color, graphs, charts and indexing. Quite a treat to view. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in working for the Federal Government. It will make the process so much easier to understand and I believe if you follow her advice, you will have a much better chance of consideration for employment in a very crowded arena.

5 out of 5 stars Complete and Easy to Use - Must Have for Military Transition.......2006-01-17

As a former Transition Assistance Program workshop facilitator and now as a direct placement recruiter, I have worked with hundreds of transitioning military service members. Not enough vets make use of their hiring advatage in federal government because the process is so involved and can be intimidating.

Troutman's latest book takes her abundant expertise in the federal hiring process and translates it in an easy to use and highly comprehensive workbook for ALL those who are leaving military service and want to explore a federal career.

This book includes basic federal resume construction, an overview of the federal hiring process, how to interpret a federal job posting, electronic versus paper applications, explainations of how to claim Veterans Prefence Points, how to utilize your past experience (no matter what it was!) and how to translate "military-speak" in to federal employment language. There is also a CD-DVD-Rom included that has numerous resume samples. This book is a great supplement to the TAP manual - all the things the TAP manual barely touches on (in regards to federal employment), this book delves in and fully explains.

Additionally, Troutman has done much of the research that normally takes job many frustrating hours searching the web. She includes a resource section which shares various agency websites, how to navigate them and how to apply to each individually.

I recommend this book to those leaving military service, both enlisted and officers alike. It is a valueable resource - a low price investment that will be of great help to military service member making the leap into federal employment. There is no other guidebook out there like this!

Don't wait until your terminal leave to get working on your federal package. The federal hiring process is not the swiftest. As a wise teacher once told me, and I now tell all my students, "Do It Now".

        5 out of 5 stars A CRYING SHAME -- A PUBLIC SCANDAL.......2006-07-08

Scholarship of this magnitude deserves to be, and should have been, published by one of our major university presses -- Oxford University Press, Yale University Press, Harvard University Press -- the list is long. That is was not so published is a public scandal. After numerous, unconscionable rejections by major publishers JESUS AND THE SHAMANIC TRADITION OF SAME-SEX LOVE finally found the light of day through Suspect Thoughts, a "press for connoisseurs of transgressive, intelligent literature." What it transgresses is the massive, unconscious -- or semi-conscious -- conspiracy of silence about the recent discoveries of the origins and errors of Christianity. That conspiracy prevail because the churches are unable to cope the truth. "You shall know the truth, and the truth will make you free" said Jesus. The truth is making men free, but it is scaring the churches to death. What scares them is the truth about the connections between sex and religion that recent scholarship have uncovered, and they cling to untenable dogma like drowning men clutching at straws. The sound of revolution are in the street, and the churches cannot shut it out. The revolutions brought on by the 18th century Enlightenment pale by comparison with the revolution now underway. One of our more level headed leaders of that revolution is Will Roscoe, and what he tells us leaves the establishment frighten out of its wits. The pews stand empty. The churches are going out of business. The very fabric of Western civilization, as my book BE DONE ON EARTH demonstrates, is decadent and under stress. And the establishment cannot save itself by sticking its collective head, ostrich like, under the sands of media babble. Another Bastille Day is dawning. Right on Roscoe!

5 out of 5 stars RITUAL NOTIONS OF ONE FLESH, ONE SPIRIT.......2006-05-23

A great read for anyone willing to court the notion of a shamanic healing ritual that involves passing spirit from one person to another through nudity and touch to become one flesh before separating into two bodies. This is NOT a gay tantric sex manual. It is a study of Jesus in history, religion, and literature in the light of shamanistic healing. It explores the implications of historical scripture version suppression...as in the suppressed version of the Gospel of St. Mark. It suggests a hierarchy of mystical baptisms...implying what Catholic and Protestant Churches have to offer are ...if not lacking... at the very least, fundamental. Seek ye the Truth and the Truth shall set you free.

4 out of 5 stars Earliest Baptisms and Their Possible Effects.......2005-11-09

In "Jesus and the Shamanic Tradition of Same-Sex Love", Will Roscoe suggests that baptism is a Christian adaptation of some shamanic rituals in which a spirit passes from one person to another. There are cults in which the two individuals, one with a spirit, are nude and touch, with or without sex, to become one flesh with one spirit, before separating into two bodies with two spirits.

An alleged attack on a "Secret Gospel of Mark" made by Clement of Alexandria (ca. 200 CE) reveals that at least that source was saying that some Christian practices involved one nude man with another. Roscoe gathers parallels and arrives at the scene in Gethsemene in Mark 14:51-52 where a young man ran away naked from Jesus's camp. The suggestion is that Jesus and the young man were engaging in a spiritual transfer of this shamanic type.

For me one interesting thing was that this interpretation suddenly makes the story of Judas more plausible. Before, I wondered why merely identifying Jesus to the gang from the chief priests made Judas such a hated figure. Judas is not shown testifying against Jesus, and the Temple authorities could have seized Him any time. I think the key is that the arresting gang had to have witnessed something happening at Gethsemene itself. The shamanic ritual could have been it. Jesus would be taken in for some sodomy- or pedophilia-related charge, in addition to those for overturning the tables at the Temple and harrassing the authorities. Adding these unreported charges to the list before sending Jesus to Pontius Pilate might have made some difference in the decision to execute Jesus. Any of this would make a big change in how we view all of Holy Week, God, and same-sex relationships. Now I can guess why Judas is considered such a rat and why no one cared to tell the truth about it.

The author's premise is inevitably thin, given the lack of direct evidence. Still, the implications are worth considering.

4 out of 5 stars Good work, not quite for the uninitiated or unsophisticated.......2005-09-24

This work is clearly not for amateurs or those unsophisticated in trends of Biblical interpretation dating back to...oh, 1920!

i think it is necessary to at least read the prologue before jumping to hasty conclusions about what Roscoe's agenda is.

Strange, but he seems to address all of the issues raised by a previous reviewer. That reviewer seemed to fall into every possible misunderstanding of the text which Roscoe, himself, discusses and places into context in his prologue.

As someone with a background in Greek cultural history and religion and the development of Christian teachings over time (they were very diverse for about several hundred years and only the strongest in the political sense survived), I really enjoyed having this book and have given it away twice.

I enjoyed this book and gave a copy to a priest friend of mine who does a lot of public speaking on issues of masculinity and spiritual initiation. This book is very useful for understanding the context and issues of interpretation surrounding this interesting passage in the traditional Gospels as well as "Secret Mark."

This text would have gotten five stars from me if not for the confusing and overlapping letters in the typesetting of terms from ancient languages. Better to keep them un-italicized in the next edition for clarity.

3 out of 5 stars Morton Smith Wannabe.......2005-05-12

Roscoe's dependence on "Clement of Alexandria and a Secret Gospel of Mark" by Morton Smith as the only source for same-sex ceremony in early Christianity is worrisome; could he not find other documents that witnessed the same thing, instead of depending on customs of Greek philosophy to fill in the gaps of his theory? Roscoe does as much, without knowing it, to prove the validity of the Mormon temple ceremony as he does his own point--and both proof are conjecture based of circumstantial evidence.

        Book Description

Published to celebrate the centennial of Joseph Cornell's birth in 1903, this book provides a fresh, multidimensional perspective on the pioneering modern artist. Lavishly illustrated with over seventy-five boxes and collages, as well as images of the fascinating source material that the artist collected to create his exquisitely crafted worlds, the book communicates to the reader the sense of surprise and delight that one experiences upon viewing the actual boxes with their toys, stuffed birds, maps, clay pipes, marbles, shells, and other paraphernalia of daily life.

The book's essays bring together the expertise of Lynda Roscoe Hartigan, chief curator at the Peabody Essex Museum and former director of the Joseph Cornell Study Center; the compelling commentary of Walter Hopps, art dealer, museum curator, and the artist's personal friend; the wide-ranging scholarship of Richard Vine, author and managing editor of Art in America; and the sensitivity of Robert Lehrman, a leading Cornell collector whose firsthand experience lends this publication its distinctive intimacy. Among the topics explored are the role of dualities in the artistic process, the dominant themes of Cornell's oeuvre, and the importance of his Christian Science faith.

Through its innovative technology, the book's companion DVD-ROM delivers an encyclopedic compendium of the artist's works and source materials, the insights of numerous scholars and critics, access to Cornell's experimental films, and interactive opportunities that promote an utterly unprecedented investigation of his art. 231 illustrations, 205 in color; DVD-ROM.

Finally there is a good book of Cornell's work (shadow boxes) published, using detailed color photographs and remarkable notes/text. This book presents the reader with in-depth insight into the ingeniuty of Mr. Cornell, God rest his tireless, creative soul!. Features an excellent biographical introduction as well. The photo- illustrations are superb, showing both overall and macro views of his boxes. Highly recommend this book for the Cornell lover, also makes for a great coffe table book too for your average art-loving page flipper.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Cornell fans.......2005-09-06

The photography and commentary of this book alone are worth the price if you are wanting to learn about a remarkable artist.

But the DVD included with the book is truly amazing for those wanting to explore Cornell's work without the benefit of a museum viewing. Truly educational and yet simply organized and easy to view.

5 out of 5 stars Essential material for the serious Cornell fan.......2005-09-03

I'm immensely satisfied with this book. The photography is beautiful and does as much justice to Cornell's work as can be done in a 2D format. But the meat of the package comes in the DVD-ROM included. the sheer volume of information, images, films and resources presented is nearly overwhelming. The close-up, navagatable, hi-res images of Cornells collages, boxes and objects, the written essays, histories and intervies, and especially the elusive collage films presented in a beautiful, fun to navigate wonderland of extra stuff make the DVD alone worth the price. and you can get it for something like 20 dollars less online? and even if you buy it for full price, if you're seriously into having everyday access to this amazing artist's work, you almost can't afford not to get this. anyway, i like it. hope this helps.

Among the most persistent European myths about Africa, explain the editors of this anthology, is that homosexuality is "absent or incidental" in African societies. Since black Africans were felt to be the most primitive of people--the closest to nature--it followed that they must be the most heterosexual, their "sexual energies and outlets devoted exclusively to their 'natural' purpose: biological reproduction." That the field work of early anthropologists didn't always support this assumption merely led researchers to suppress their findings, or to fail to inquire too closely of subjects who were reluctant, in any case, to discuss their sexual lives with outsiders. The contributors to this volume argue convincingly that even native denials of homosexuality are often politically motivated (the sexual values of the West having permeated most of these cultures), and should be regarded as skeptically as the accounts of Western anthropologists, who in most cases have not seriously investigated same-sex patterns, "failing to report what they do observe, and discounting what they report." In the essays collected here, dating from the colonial period to the present and covering the major regions of black Africa, evidence of same-sex marriages, cross-dressing, role reversal, and premarital peer homosexuality challenges the myth and calls for further study. --Regina Marler

        Book Description

Claims concerning the presence and status of homosexuality in historic African cultures have become central points of contention in debates among contemporary African Americans. Some of those involved in the debate have even asserted that the original languages of Africa contained no words for gay or lesbian, therefore concluding that they did not exist. As the first work of its kind on the subject, Boy-Wives and Female-Husbands answers an urgent need for accurate, well-researched, and balanced work on African sexuality. It offers perspectives from the fields of anthropology and history, along with extensive evidence from ethnographic and literary sources. The essays explore such topics as woman-woman marriages, early reports of Malagasy "berdaches," male homosexuality in contemporary West Africa, alternative gender identities among the Swahili, the regulation of sexuality in colonial Zimbabwe, and the portrayals of homosexuality in modern African literature. Bound to be an invaluable resource for discussions of traditional and contemporary African cultures, Boy-Wives and Female-Husbands is a book whose time has clearly come.

        *~*

"Boy-Wives and Female-Husbands: Studies of African Homosexualities" is a wonderful resource for those interested in learning African homosexualities. I gave it four stars because there is little about Somali homosexuality but the book is perfect. It goes from coast to coast and all in between.

I didn't know much about African homosexuality before I bought this book. Now I'm familiar with my home continent's homosexual "tendecies." :-)

I bought a few copies for friends as gifts and they loved it. Some of them have told me it read more like novels than a cultural study, which it is. It is fascinating to the last note. Enjoy, darlings.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye Opening Book.......2000-04-28

Here is a book with oral histories and folklore tales from ethnographers that went to Africa. The book is an eyeopening one into the sexuality aspect of Africans often challenging theories of sexuality. It is an excellent book to answer to the question of How & Why Does Same Sex Sexual Behavior Varies Cross Culturally? It was writing an essay on this topic that got me to this book, I have always wanted to know about this issue since there has been a lot of denial from African colleagues but once I have read the first few pages of the book that 'denial' and "shh" feelings that exist within many Africans, was brought to light. The same smoothness and revelation is experienced throughout the book. The book seperates Africa into four regional sections to illustrate the diversity of African culture within that vast continent. It is very easy to read and simple too. If you are a book worm, you will love this one. It is the book for History, Anthropology or Gender Study students or those with interest in the above mention + Sexuality. The book now occupies a special place in my selective collection, get one too, I am sure there will be no regrets!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome geographical and historical range!.......1999-11-30

The first book to attempt to survey homosexualities across (sub-Saharan) Africa is also a very good one. At a time when certain East African leaders are trying to hold onto power by scapegoating homosexuality as "un-African," Murray and Roscoe show that there are and have been a wide range of roles in "traditional" African cultures for those who love persons of their own sex. Once this is established - and it is established beyond any reasonable doubt - most readers will probably be more interested in the parts of the book dealing with contemporary individuals (including a young Kikuyu's male's memoir, Amory's chapter on the changing conceptions on the Swahili coast, and an explanation of the view in Lesotho and elsewherre that two women cannot have "sex," so that their physical relations are not seen as "sexual").

The book concludes by looking at the "social construction" of homosexualities by cross-tabulating societies with a kind of homosexuality (with relationships structured by age, structured by gender, or more-or-less egalitarian ones) with other structures (e.g., of inheritance, postpartum taboos) in the same societies. No absolute, categorical patterns emerge. I.e., there are correlations, but no clear "if x, then homosexuality y" conclusions.
