Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

except they were to have two vans and had to leave back close to 2 million in gems. I also am the only one left alive. Book is close to the truth, but does have a few errors, they called me to add to the book, said the Jimmy help, right, no way and I said I am still alive because of not talking about it.I did get into the witness program without testiefying on anyone. I talked to Jimmy in the MCC in nyc.I am planning on writing a book on what the Government did to me, setting me up to get killed, sending me to Lewisburg after I was cooperating. But I was protected by the bad guys. After 5 weeks there I went to the Warden and told him I was cooperating and he called the FBI who was behing sending me there, and said to me you are going back to NYC and don't ever let anyone send you here again and this went on and on four the next 4 years. For kids to get their dose of action and thrills, they need not always go to the local multiplex for the latest bang 'em up film. They could try such books as
The Whipping Boy, which relies not on exploding spaceships and demonic robots but mythic story, humorous characters and, ready or not, a moral. The plot involves the orphan Jemmy, who must take the whippings for the royal heir, Prince Brat. Jemmy plans to flee this arrangement until Prince Brat beats him to it, and takes Jemmy along. Jemmy then hears he's charged with the Prince's abduction as this Newbery Medal winning book turns toward a surprising close.
Book Description
A Prince
and a Pauper
Jemmy, once a poor boy living on the streets, now lives in a castle. As the whipping boy, he bears the punishment when Prince Brat misbehaves, for it is forbidden to spank, thrash, or whack the heir to the throne. The two boys have nothing in common and even less reason to like one another. But when they find themselves taken hostage after running away, they are left with no choice but to trust each other.

The Whipping Boy.......2007-08-23
This title was on a Summer Reading List. It was a great, quick read for my son. He is in 6th grade. It kept his interest, he understood it, and he didn't get bored away from reading it. Boys his age were characters in the story.
I remember reading this in school like 7 years ago or so........2007-05-20
I remember reading this book in school and that it was really good. It's a very good children's book with such amazing imagery, and you really feel for the main character.
I sincerely recommend it.
thanks for your time,
Loran
I llllooooovvvveeeeddd this book!.......2007-04-16
There was a Prince named Prince Horace. His nickname was "Prince Brat" because he was always selfish and arrogant. Since he was a prince he couldn't get spanked. So he had a whipping boy to get spanked when he did something bad. His name was Jemmy or as the King called him "Jemmy-from-the-streets." This book is good because it's adventurous and you learn how Kings, Princes, or Homeless people live. I recommend this book because I thought it was really good and it makes you feel like you don't want to put the book down once you've gotten in to it. And thats why i rated it 4 stars.
5B.......2007-02-27
Prince Brat and Jemmy the Whipping Boy run away, and run into trouble. They are riding and they meet Cutwater and Hold-Your-Nose-Billy, some of the most wanted people. Cutwater and Billy kidnap them and hold them hostage. Finally they escape, but Cutwater and Billy are hot on their tail. They are walking and meet a girl who gives them food and shelter. If you want to know the rest, read The Whipping Boy.
I liked the Whipping Boy book becasue it tells you how mean we are to people and how we change. I would never run away becasue I would have no place to sleep or food to eat. The book is so good, you will like it.

I've read the entire series so far (Vol. 1-7) to my nine year old son. It's something we share-our love for Captain Jack Sparrow and the crew of The Barnacle. The entire series is funny and exciting. It is so easy to picture Jack Sparrow as a teenager. I can't wait for Volume 8!!!
Excellent!.......2007-05-12
We are just starting on this book, the 5th in the series and a start of a new adventure for the young explorers. "Captain (please!)" Jack Sparrow and his crew seek a well-deserved rest after their experience with the Sword of Cortes, only to find themselves in the middle of another mystery and at the heart of the wrath of one of their crewmate's village! This book is another page turner that leaves my son begging for the next chapter and the next book in the series! Perfect for us die-hard POTC fans!

Imagine a Dickens story with a Venetian setting, and you'll have a good sense of Cornelia Funke's prizewinning novel The Thief Lord, first published in Germany in 2000. This suspenseful tale begins in a detective's office in Venice, as the entirely unpleasant Hartliebs request Victor Getz's services to search for two boys, Prosper and Bo, the sons of Esther Hartlieb's recently deceased sister. Twelve-year-old Prosper and 5-year-old Bo ran away when their aunt decided she wanted to adopt Bo, but not his brother. Refusing to split up, they escaped to Venice, a city their mother had always described reverently, in great detail. Right away they hook up with a long-haired runaway named Hornet and various other ruffians who hole up in an abandoned movie theater and worship the elusive Thief Lord, a young boy named Scipio who steals jewels from fancy Venetian homes so his new friends can get the warm clothes they need. Of course, the plot thickens when the owner of the pawn shop asks if the Thief Lord will carry out a special mission for a wealthy client: to steal a broken wooden wing that is the key to completing an age-old, magical merry-go-round. This winning cast of characters--especially the softhearted detective with his two pet turtles--will win the hearts of readers young and old, and the adventures are as labyrinthine and magical as the streets of Venice itself. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
Prosper and Bo are orphans on the run from their cruel aunt and uncle. The brothers decide to hide out in Venice, where they meet a mysterious character who calls himself the "Thief Lord." Brilliant and charismatic, the Thief Lord leads a ring of street children who dabble in petty crimes. Prosper and Bo relish being part of this colorful new family. But the Thief Lord has secrets of his own. And soon the boys are thrust into circumstances that will lead them, and readers, to a fantastic, spellbinding conclusion.
Customer Reviews:
No Oliver Twist, but a good book........2007-08-22
This book has echos from Oliver Twist, but it is not the same story and it lacks the menagerie of villains. The plot is interesting and entertaining throughout and well worth the time required to read it.
Good Fantasy Novel for Kids.......2007-08-05
The Thief Lord's first sentence was gripping: "It was autumn in Venice when Victor first heard of Prosper and Bo." I just wanted to know who Victor or Prosper or Bo was, and as a Venice fan, was pulled in. Yes, the story was quite interesting and had a lot of action, but the one thing that didn't satisfy me as much was the fact that the story had three different plots that hardly connected. I didn't know whether the author wanted to concentrate on a magical merry-go-round, or a detective trying to capture them, or kids disappearing. But still, the plot was nice, even if it was divided into three parts. I kept on reading until midnight, when the climax of each part came up. The only boring parts were between each part. I still recommend this book, if you would just think that this book was a collection of three incredible stories.

i enjoyed reading this book and hearing tales of fantastic thefts, and dramatic lies. i liked the realistic deep gun blowing feel of the characters in some of the most devastating events, from being caught by police to being forced out of your home.At first i disliked the fact that the author brought magic into this epic tale, but that slowly carved itself into the story making it better than first expected. The detail and description of most things in this book seem to bring you away from reading the story and send you in to see life from the characters point of view until you realize it and you continue reading the book. All together I'd rap this up as a pretty good book and reccomend it to anyone who enjoys reading sneaky fantasy books.
Slow & Boring.......2007-06-06
I found the character development slow and the story line to be weak. There was some intrigue and mystery, but overall I couldn't wait to finish it and get to my next book.
The Thief Lord.......2007-06-01
This book was absolutely amazing. From start to begging I was in shock on how well the author made these characters 3 dimensional. These children have a little gang going on where they live in an abandoned movie theater and they have a leader who seemingly is unbelievable at stealing valuables. Later on they learn the secret of their "thief lord" and they also learn about a mystic object that holds long lasting effects. This book receives a 5 because it is probably the best book to read if you are into a little magic and you love to think outside the box. This is truly a great novel.

Book Description
In this stunning debut, author Scott Lynch delivers the wonderfully thrilling tale of an audacious criminal and his band of confidence tricksters. Set in a fantastic city pulsing with the lives of decadent nobles and daring thieves, here is a story of adventure, loyalty, and survival that is one part Robin Hood, one part Ocean’s Eleven, and entirely enthralling.…
An orphan’s life is harsh–and often short–in the island city of Camorr, built on the ruins of a mysterious alien race. But born with a quick wit and a gift for thieving, Locke Lamora has dodged both death and slavery, only to fall into the hands of an eyeless priest known as Chains–a man who is neither blind nor a priest. A con artist of extraordinary talent, Chains passes his skills on to his carefully selected “family” of orphans–a group known as the Gentlemen Bastards. Under his tutelage, Locke grows to lead the Bastards, delightedly pulling off one outrageous confidence game after another. Soon he is infamous as the Thorn of Camorr, and no wealthy noble is safe from his sting.
Passing themselves off as petty thieves, the brilliant Locke and his tightly knit band of light-fingered brothers have fooled even the criminal underworld’s most feared ruler, Capa Barsavi. But there is someone in the shadows more powerful–and more ambitious–than Locke has yet imagined.
Known as the Gray King, he is slowly killing Capa Barsavi’s most trusted men–and using Locke as a pawn in his plot to take control of Camorr’s underworld. With a bloody coup under way threatening to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the Gray King at his own brutal game–or die trying.…
Customer Reviews:
enjoyable.......2007-10-01
I liked the story. The world was fasinating and the characters were funny and interesting. It seemed to be a book of flashbacks, which helped in the reading for the slow parts, but my only complaint is that the story dragged a bit here and there.
Wondrous Invention By A Debut Author - Splendid.......2007-10-01
I have, over the course of the past two years, encountered some very wonderful and awesome fantasy novels and series. However, many of them share the same archetypical plot: Boy is special, finds "good" object, old man mentor, etc. etc. This novel is different. The Lies of Locke Lamora is a wonderful addition to the fantasy genre, and I am here to tell you about it.
In the island city of Camorr, of 16th century Venicean style, there are various gangs, theives and criminal organizations. Under the Capa Barsavi, these gangs and whatnot have prospered, under something called the Secret Peace which allies royalty with the criminals. In one of the Capa's groupings, an orphanage-esque place where orphans are taught the art of thief and cutthroat, a five year old boy arrives, new to Camorr altogether. Its leader, called the Thiefmaker, has trouble with the boy, and after a year, sells him to the Eyeless Priest of the Order of Perelandro and the Gentlemen Bandits. He is raised there.
After twenty-two or so years, the Eyeless Priest dies, and the child, Locke, is the new garrista. Not a child anymore, he and his fellow members, Calo, Galdo, Jean and Bug go wreak havoc upon a new royal family (the Salvaras) by conning them of four hundred thousand crowns (currency). When everything is going right, he is hired by a mysterious Grey King, and everything goes wrong.
My favorite part of this book was the gritty, unarchetypical characters, especially Calo and Galdo. They had a hardiness to them that I have never seen in any book before. The setting was interesting, as it wasn't the classic 12th century medieval place based on Britain and Ireland, it was a new, different place, one I hadn't visited, one not on the map. The book is filled with alchemy, with no or little magic, just things that actually are plausible. Also, the climax is thrilling. You'll be up really late, I can tell you that much!
On last thought, the book is part Robin Hood, part Tom Clancy, part Age of Empires, part Thief Lord and part George RR Martin.

PS: Not for faint hearted or those who cannot handle language.
Entertaining stilettos-against-sorcery .......2007-09-24
Trained from childhood as a thief and con-artist par excellence, Locke Lamora employs a silver tongue and quicksilver mind to divest the rich of Camorr of their excessive wealth. No sooner do Locke and his associates initiate their latest scheme, however, than they find themselves at the mercy of the mysterious Gray King, who intends to use them as pawns in his bid to take over the city-state's underworld. As the Gray King's diabolical plan unfolds, Locke finds his skills tested as never before as he struggles not only for his own survival, but also for the survival of his friends and Camorr itself.
In this scintillating debut novel, Scott Lynch establishes himself as a rising star of fantasy fiction. Like Patrick Rothfuss (The Name of the Wind), Lynch is a natural storyteller with a keen intellect and a gift for richly detailed, imaginative world-building and intricate plotting. Lies is a fast-paced, entertaining, stilettos- (and hatchets-) against-sorcery tale that is both self-contained and well-positioned as a cornerstone for further adventures. It does have its share of weaknesses: excessive and gratuitous profanity; good but not deeply developed characterization; a few locales that are either too complex to describe or else inadequately described; and a lack of any comment on the human condition or truth that will change one's life. In short, it's a tale intended as pure entertainment ... and as such, it admirably succeeds.
Highly recommended for fans of thieves, caper movies, and well-written sword-and-sorcery. Recommended with a caveat to fans of high fantasy and anyone distasteful of profanity and violence. Four gleaming white-iron stars.
Just not worth the effort.......2007-09-21
Mr. Lynch has some decent ideas but this book is a tough read. The story jumps around with very little transition and can be tough to follow. It is also filled with gratuitous vulgarity from curse words to obscene comments. I am not easily offended but the language shocks you away from the story. This book desperately needs an editor and a rewrite, until that happens don't waste your time.
Well that was fun.......2007-09-17
A very enjoyable book.
Hard to believe it is the author's first as it is very competently written. The world building was believable and provided a nice backdrop for the rip-roaring action. As another reviewer commented, it is reminiscent of Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser series.
The fractured time-line referred to by one reviewer is not particularly difficult to navigate, though if you are a young teenager or only a sometime reader it may disrupt your attention for a while.
The swearing in the book obviously puts some readers off. I agree that maybe it was a little overdone, but most of the time it was appropriate to the characters and their situations and I soon stopped noticing it.
The principal character was very well drawn - it is a tribute to the author that the principal character who has few morals (he does usually draw the line at murder) is easily adopted by the reader, whereas the principal protagonist who is arguably trying to achieve much needed social reform/revolution, is clearly the villain.
I've just been on 3 weeks' holiday lying on a beach and over that period read about 35 books - all carefully pre-selected based on other reader's reviews. Along with Carol Berg's Transformation and C D Payne's Frisco Pigeon Mambo, this was the one I enjoyed the most.
I look forward to reading his next novel.

Book Description
Eleven-year-old Sallie March is a whip-smart tomboy and voracious reader of Western adventure novels. When she and her sister Maude escape their self-serving guardians for the wilds of the frontier, they begin an adventure the likes of which Sallie has only read about. This time however, the "wanted woman" isn't a dime-novel villian, it's Sallie's very own sister! What follows is not the lies the papers printed, but the honest-to-goodness truth of how two sisters went from being orphans to being outlaws—and lived to tell the tale!
Customer Reviews:
Sure to Appeal to Adventure Seeking Girls! Don't miss it!.......2007-08-10
Much like the "dimer novels" Sallie enjoys reading in this novel, "The Misadventures of Maude March" gets off to a rollicking start and continues at this fast and furious pace. Bank robberies, mountain lions, ornery mules, shooting, snake attacks, outlaw gangs--it is full of everything a reader could want. When Sallie and Maude are orphaned by the stray bullet from a dimer hero Joe Harden, they are sent to live with the preacher who sees them as potential maids. Anxious to marry off Maude, the sisters decide to escape in search of long lost Uncle Arlen. Stealing two horses and disguised as boys, they fall into one wild escapade after another. Interspersed are highly exaggerated newspaper articles about Maude's escapades. With its fast action, humor, fully developed and strong heroines, it is a perfect novel to suggest to those readers looking for more than a girl wants boy, chases boy, falls in love type novel.
A great read aloud as well, and one that has enough excitement to appeal to male listeners. A thoroughly enjoyable book, worth 5+ stars!
Practically Perfect.......2007-02-13
i couldn't put this book down! It was utterly depresing when the book ended!
A Kid's Review.......2006-07-03
This is such a fun book to read! Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. The story follows two girls, Sallie and Maude March, after their guardian, Aunt Ruthie, is accidentally shot and killed. With no other living kin, the girls set off to look for their long-lost Uncle Arlen, who supposedly lives in Independence, Missouri. They have to brave mountain lions, snowstorms, violent gangs of sharpshooting teenagers, nosey women and much more, all while Maude is being chased for stealing horses! This is a great action-packed adventure that both girls and boys will love!
Awesome!!!! .......2006-06-07
This book is a fast paced thriller set up in the old west. When I opened the book and saw the lining that looked like an old newspaper I knew it was gonna be good. Maude is the down to earth sister while all Sally wants is an adventure. This "dimer" is one book I would recommend to anyone! I'd give it 6 stars and I plan on reading it a second time!
Heading into the sunset.......2005-10-31
If Louis L'Amour were still alive and if he wrote books for girls, this is perhaps what he'd come up with. It's full of authentic detail, rip-roaring action, personable young heroines, with an enduring respect for books, words, learning and reading. While not quite a Western (it's all East of Independence, MO) it has the elements western-lovers will savor: fast horses, harsh weather, snakes that won't die, sharp-shootin' gals, spunky dialogue, and a "git r done" attitude and an ethically satisfying ending. A great readaloud for middle school, and boys will love it as much as girls. It's like Lemony Snicket on horseback!

Customer Reviews:
This is a great series!.......2006-04-09
I like this book because it is an adventurous book and it is also a mystery. Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose help their friends by saving baby wolves from wolf-nappers. If you want to find out how they rescued the wolves and who took them, just read the book! The White Wolf is not the only good book in the series - all the A-Z Mysteries are good. There is one book for each letter in the alphabet. The first one is The Absent Author. Once you read that, you will want to read all the way to The Zombie Zone!
A Good Mystery.......2005-10-21
(8 year old reviewer) I really liked this book. It kept me interested until the end. THe best part was when the pups returned to the mother, but I won't tell you how that happens. You will just have to read it!

Customer Reviews:
great!.......2007-09-14
the type of book that you can't put down until it is finished, and then, you need the next one right away
will delight fans of Lian Hearn's TALES OF THE OTORI or Robin McKinley.......2007-09-10
The only bad thing I can say about this series is that there are only three books in it, and I could happily read dozens. Each of the three is a true gem. It's hard to say which is better: the intense, luminous, incredibly beautiful prose, the characters who charm even with their faults, the dialogue that's as sharp as a new blade, or the wonderful world-building that riffs off of the Classical Mediterranean culture/geography/nomenclature.
Turner creates a contest of wits between a number of very different, very deadly, and very talented people. The narrative reads like a fireworks display of daring plans, brilliant ideas, sleight of hand, and astonishing courage. Hidden motives abound. Even the narrator lies to the reader. With so many brilliant minds clashing, it takes a bit of luck to win...or is it more than luck?
Interesting lead character in fantasy adventure, with a steadily building pace.......2007-07-31
As the title suggests, this is a book about a thief - - a very talented thief, and an interesting character, as it turns out. The story occurs in a fantasy world that tends to invoke classical Greece instead of the more typical use of medieval imagery. The world has a well-developed creation myth that plays an important role in the story, some partially-explained politics, and a weak sense of daily life.
There's a long stretch in which Turner uses a journey to develop the characters and to explain the fantasy world to the readers. She does this very effectively but that doesn't change the fact that this is a really long exposition for what comes later. Do pay attention here, though, as character strengths and flaws revealed here are very important.
After the journey-exposition section, we get a series of action scenes - - extended thiefery, some battles and some chase scenes. These are all well-paced, and the key thiefing takes place in a very well imagined setting.
The book concludes pretty quickly with a series of plot twists. In our family, the older you are, the more of these twists you saw coming. Our pre-teen was caught by surprise, and really enjoyed the twists.
Overall, this is a well-written and enjoyable read, hitting all the notes that you want in a fantasy adventure, and more clever in many respects than the typical book in this market.
Excellent for all ages.......2007-07-13
Extremely well plotted, this novel has lots of intricacy that merit even a second reading! I enjoyed Eugenides tremendously in this first of three, and his character keeps getting better in the next two novels. While I was very entertained by The Thief, the foundation it builds for The Queen of Attolia and the 3rd novel, The King of Attolia were even more important. Another point: even though there were more twists and turns in this than Lombard Street in San Francisco, it was easily enough followed and completely self-contained. Great surprise ending.
best ya fantasy I've ever read.......2007-07-02
Wonderful characterization, extremely well plotted (the surprises really are surprising), great mood throughout. Each book in the triology is excellent, but I believe The Thief is the best of the three. I've never read a better fantasy book for young adults (and I've read many).

Customer Reviews:
Would you really want to be rich, powerful and famous?.......2007-07-17
This is an excellent little book that shows what it takes to be rich, powerful and famous.I just did a review on "The Secret",July 16,2007;which tells you the secret to success by basically wishing for it.
This book, though put together by academics, shows what these "Barons" believed were the ingredients in their success.
This book reminds me of a Special Walter Cronkite did over 25 years ago.He had 4 highly successful entreprenneurs ;Land, who invented the Polaroid,Getty,of oil fame, and two others who I can't recall). He also had 4 young men who were completing their University courses. The Barons told the students what it took them to attain the successes they had. They were going to give each student $1,000 (more than any of them had when they started) and armed with "the secrets to success" set them on their way to becoming asrich, powerful and famous as they did.
As the barons explained what they did,the sacrifices they made, the discipline it took, the obsession to succeed and all that went with it;it was clear that the students, though intent in the beginning, weren't sure they really wanted to buy into it all.The barons also were convinced that the students didn't really want to be rich, powerful and famous;they only wanted the things they thought went along with it.
So,as you read this book you see that the money and fame was way down the list of what these highly successful people were after. The money and fame was simply a by-product and at the most ,only a tool to further their dreams. As for the riches, they usually lost it in the end or gave it away.It was filling their dream that was important.
As I write this,we have two great examples in the news here in Toronto. Ed Mervish, from humble beginnings, made millions in the low cost retail business and later in the Arts and Entertainment. He loved his employes and they worshiped him. He loved his city and became one of its most admired citizens. Then there is Conrad Black, who came from a well to do background and created a huge empire, and now fighting to defend himself in court. Don't you not think that it was something other than just money that drove these two men;and is it any wonder why so few have what it takes to be rich, powerful and famous. If one has such desires ,the price is high and you better be brepared to pay it.
Nice Book with Bad Poison..........2006-05-12
There are some great quotes from 19th & early 20th century masters of industry from this wee book. The hard thinking and great tyre industrialist Harvey Firestone should be looked out for and observed, as is also the underrated but brilliant U.S. President Calvin Coolidge. But the book is needlessly ruined!
Remember the title of the book is called "Wisdom of the Robber Barons". So why do these academic authors ruin their work with unnecessary inclusions admiring anti-capitalistic Muckrakers [Alfred Henry Lewis etc] who abhor the huge & necessary economic undertakings of great men? And not surprisingly, true to form, the ruthlessly honest & financial genius Jay Gould is not even recognised as a pinnacle of economic mastery, he is abhored and misquoted badly on page 96. Why?
Perhaps, the authors are apologising for their own unproductive efforts as academics. This is unfortunate. If they had deleted their poisoned edicts from their observations I would have rated this book higher. Nevertheless, well-healed and superior academic writers do exist for which I would recommend...

A Slender Volume of Abundant Value.......2000-11-24
I really enjoyed reading this book, especially because there are so many quotations included which I had not encountered previously. Smith and Dalzell identify "enduring lessons from Rockefeller, Morgan, and [others among] the first industrialists." The term "Robber Barons" suggests criminal monarchs. No doubt it has some direct relevance to those discussed, at least at some point in their respective business careers. The material is organized as follows: an excellent Introduction ("Why Robber Barons Matter") followed by four chapters (Venturing, Competing, Managing, and Leading). Then there is a handy section called "Chronology: Business and World Events, 1870-1929,'" followed by recommendations for "Further Reading."
Why do the Robber Barons matter? "During the golden age of industry, running from the midnineteenth century through 1930 or so, the Robber Barons commercialized risky high technologies and figured out how to build radically new organizations from the bottom up. They identified the great entrepreneurial and management issues of the world's first big corporations, and they devised surprisingly durable solutions to the basic business problems of modern civilization." Here are a few of the quotations which caught my eye:
"There could be no progress until enough people could be made dissatisfied -- and this could be done only when they were brought to think beyond the limits to which they were accustomed." (Thomas Edison)
"If you have an idea, that is good. If you also have ideas as to how to work it out, that is better." (Henry Ford)
"Every executive has to recognize sooner or later that he himself cannot do everything that needs to be done. Until he recognizes this, he is only an individual, with an individual's power, but after he recognizes it, he becomes, for the first time, an executive, with control of multiple powers." (Alfred Sloan)
The authors have done an excellent job of selecting and distributing quotations such as these throughout the text. They include their own insightful comments, correlating them with key points previously introduced in their Introduction. Is there a great deal that is "new" in this slender volume? No. Is there much of value to be learned or have reaffirmed? You bet.
