Book Description

In the cloud-washed airspace between the cornfields of Illinois and blue infinity, a man puts his faith in the propeller of his biplane. For disillusioned writer and itinerant barnstormer Richard Bach, belief is as real as a full tank of gas and sparks firing in the cylinders...until he meets Donald Shimoda--former mechanic and self-described messiah who can make wrenches fly and Richard's imagination soar....

In Illusions, the unforgettable follow-up to his phenomenal bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Richard Bach takes to the air to discover the ageless truths that give our souls wings: that people don't need airplanes to soar...that even the darkest clouds have meaning once we lift ourselves above them... and that messiahs can be found in the unlikeliest places--like hay fields, one-traffic-light midwestern towns, and most of all, deep within ourselves.

5 out of 5 stars Bach crosses Adventure with Belief..........2007-09-29

Richard Bach shares insight into his life and beliefs in Illusions. This book has been a great source of hope and belief for me as I venture through my own life. Bach crosses adventure with belief and demonstrates that without either life can be incredibly boring. With both, life can be much more than many care to handle.

Life is a fact, living is a choice. We all have a connection to a higher calling. It is up to each of us to transcend our limitations and grow. Enjoy learning to believe again...

5 out of 5 stars A great fable.......2007-09-14

A friend got me to read this in college and I've re-read it many times over the years since, passing it on to other friends that have enjoyed it!

It has a wonderful magic about it and while I still have to clean my windshield I like to think that maybe there are fewer bugs these days.

This book was in very nice condition when I received it and for only .01 plus shipping, it was very much worth it! Thank you!!

4 out of 5 stars Fun Book, Great Proverbs, Easy Reading [98].......2007-09-03

"Illusions" is one of those books which means very different things to very different readers.

To the Christian, it may be nothing more than a revisiting, a modernization of the ageless and ultimate truisms espoused in the New Testament. To a Hindu, this book recites their mantra that all of creation is divine. And, an existentialist may find this book to recite his/her belief that creation is meaningless or even evil.

And, all may have read exactly what the author sought for them to read.

In this book, two barnstorming pilots of antique biplanes meet. Richard, the narrator, is mesmerized by Donald Shimoda - the unwilling messiah. Don is always moving to avoid the throngs who follow him when he is revealed. If he just brushes a cripple or cancer patient, they are cured. He bears a great cross.

And, he is full of wisdom. Like so many wise old men of literature - Melchizedeck of Coehlo's "The Alchemist" or Conchi of Fowles "The Magus" - many questions of the narrator are answered with questions by the wise man.

This entire story may be a parable, or parts of the story make many parables. But, each is laced with proverbs or aphorisms which delight the reader. Some of my favorites were: "Your friends will know you better in the first minute you meet than your acquaintances will know you in a thousand years.""You teach best what you most need to learn." "Argue for your limitations and sure enough they are yours."

"We are all free to do whatever we want to do. . . " Don teaches Richard. And, in these lessons, Don tells Richard that most everything he has learned is not the truth.

"This world? And everything in it? Illusions, Richard! Every bit of it illusions!" And, so like a child, Richard must learn to walk again. Must learn to learn again. Must live all over again.

In fact, being all knowing is common - not the impossible. Don knows everything. Richard admits he does not. Why? Don says to Richard, "You do (know everything) too, of course. I just know that I know all things." Richard has to learn to bring down the walls. He has to learn to unhinge doors. In logic, the inverse is as valid as the verse. If one says: all people who think they know nothing, know nothing. Then the valid inverse would be - all people who think they know everything, know everything. That is the difference between Richard and Don.

When the wise man leaves, he leaves in style. One person tells him, "You know mister, I think you're a fake." And he answers, "Of course I'm a fake! We're all fakes on the whole world, we're pretending to be something we are not. . . we are unkillable undestroyable ideas of the Is, no matter how much we believe otherwise."

Philosophical, religious and thought provoking. This is a fun novel to open one's eyes. Hope to see you in the next world Richard Bach.

4 out of 5 stars Like to think?.......2007-09-02

This book by Richard Bach, will if anything, make you THINK! A lost art in a dumbed down world that is spoon fed everything that it believes. I really liked the book and suspect I will be rereading it on occasion.

Readers of Richard Bach's Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, will recall that said messiah, Donald Shimoda, carried with him a small book entitled the Messiah's Handbook. According to Shimoda, all Bach had to do was, "Open it, and whatever you need to know is there." Now, decades after Illusions was first published, Bach has made the handbook available to all of us "advanced souls in training."

Rather than reading it cover-to-cover, Bach counsels us to close our eyes, focus on the question we want an answer to, then open the handbook at random, open our eyes and read what's on the page. In this regard, Messiah's Handbook can be likened to a 21st century version of the I Ching or The Book of Runes, with the same appeal to readers who enjoys such works. Each page is composed of a single, thought-provoking aphorism.

As with all of Bach's books, at the heart of Messiah's Handbook is his encouragement to his reader to follow the drumbeat of their dreams without compromise or apology, knowing that we can have what we desire so long as we believe we can. Used as directed, Messiah's Handbook is a delightfully insightful guide for making those dreams come true.--Larry Trivieri Jr.

Book Description

In Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah, Richard Bach met Donald Shimoda, a fellow pilot with the keys to the universe who barnstormed the Midwest in a Travel Air biplane. Part of Shimoda's secret was a small book, bound in a what looked like suede - Messiah's Handbook: Reminders for the Advanced Soul. "Open it," he said, "and whatever you need to know is there." Lost for decades and rediscovered, here it is in print at last - reminders for those who have outgrown cynicism and doubt.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Fascinating.......2007-07-18

Over the years I have admired and ejoyed Richard Bach's works. This one came as a welcome surprise, as its content honors the "Reminders for the Advanced Soul" part of the title. It is a nice compendium of quotes by Bach that reflect his philosophy of life. The text speaks to the reader's Higher Self and invites to perform self-enquiry. I personally find it nourishes my spirit. And I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys inspirational quotes of a different kind.

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom One Bite At A Time.......2007-06-22

Wonderful collection of wisdom. Not a book but a collection. Think of it not as bound pages but as individual scraps of wisdom.

Small, powerful, positive.

4 out of 5 stars Aphorisms and Great One-Liners.......2007-05-07

I have enjoyed Bach's easy to read and remember books for over twenty years. I re-read "Illusions" a couple of times and year and then give it away. The "Messiahs Handbook" takes the most memorable quotes from Richard's writings and makes them accessable on numberless pages. While the "Messiah's Handbook" is central to "Illusions" this re-print gives the reader a quick kick out of the ordinary.

The subversive message of the book is that your life is yours and this book is much like word oriented "Roschart" ink blot. . .a place to go and look. . . and then see.

Read it laugh at yourself and enjoy the time.

5 out of 5 stars If you love Illusions this book is a must!.......2007-03-31

I was ordering a few books one day and added this one to get free shipping. I am so glad I did I love it. My copy of Illusions is well worn.

Now I have this little book on my computer desk. It has fallen off my desk and magically opened to just the right page on more than one occasion.

Give yourself a gift and buy this wonderful little book.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful companion.......2007-03-14

After reading Illusions, I found myself constantly flipping back to find where the font differed in the text in order to find those precious words of wisdom that Richard Bach seems to come up with quite easily. I've found this book to be a great thing to have as it's easy to carry in a pocket or a back-pack and you can just sit yourself down, breathe for a few seconds, and ask a question of the Is. Of course, you don't have to believe in any magical side to it. It's also just a nice little book with great quotes. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Richard Bach.

4 out of 5 stars Not that great, but an essential part of the series........2007-09-27

If you're a fan of Dune, this book may or may not be for you. It's definitely not one of Herbert's better works, so if you're looking for something of the same quality of the first book, you'd probably be better off looking at some of his other works (I recommend the Destination: Void series). If you're looking at reading the entire Dune series, however, this one's a must-read...just don't expect the high-quality thrills & intrigue that make Dune the high-quality novel that it is.

5 out of 5 stars Dune Messiah.......2007-09-08

Again, I could have sworn that I had ordered a hardback copy of this book, I received a paperback. The book came neatly and carefully packed. Its condition was mint as far as I am concerned. In addition to its expert packing, it came in just as expected. I am completely satisfied with this company and will continue to do business with them.
As for the story itself, currently this book. I have just finished readding "Heretics of Dune". I am very much enthralled by this series and though I read "Dune" many years ago. I was not aware of the follow up books being this good. I had tried the next 2 books in the series and was not impressed. However, after reading the latest series of pre-Dune books. My interest has been re-awakened.

The changes to society that Paul has brought about cause complex plots and factions to spring up, and he does fall victim to one of these. Part of this is resistance to his strange supersister, who is slowly being driven insane because of what she was exposed to at birth. The Bene Gesserit have lost control of their superman, the superman controls the most valuable substance in the galaxy, an so controls transport throughout the universe.

As part of the plot, the Tleilaxu send Paul a clone of one of his childhood mentors, Duncan Idaho, who is now dead. His sister falls for the clone, and the clone is also part of an assassination plot. His wife is also poisoning his mistress.

The problem for the prescient man is how to be sure he is doing the right thing, and choosing the right path.

A radiation weapon blinds Paul, and the Fremen have a strong taboo against the blind, even though Paul's powers clearly enable him to see.

Eventually, he removes himself from the equation, as his decision on what to do, after the death of Chani.

3 out of 5 stars Sequel Not As 'Spicey' As Original Masterwork.......2007-08-21

I would normally give a writer such as Frank Herbert higher marks, but "Messiah" is not the worthy successor to the ground-breaking "Dune" that one would expect or hope for. The text is overwrought with an unlimited omniscient narrative that leaves little for readers to discover or imagine for themselves. The story's flow drags due to excessive "telling" and not enough "showing." Dialog is minimalized, and character interactions are infrequent and -- when finally given voice -- are overly philosophizing and ponderous. Add to this a so-so plot line and you have a sequel to a Megawork that just doesn't cut it. "Messiah" is Frank Herbert's thinly veiled views on world (or "off-world" in this case) religion, politics, governments, corruption, conspiracy, etc. The reframing of Paul Atredies as a galactic despot whose absolute power has absolutely corrupted him, and sister Alia who becomes a spiritual icon to the simple Freman, are clearly editorial statements on things much closer to this planet than to some far-away visionscape. Viewed in this light, "Messiah" is a philosophical "soap box" that I suppose is the right of every visionary writer at some point in their career. (C.S. Lewis comes to mind!) BUT, if you're looking for an action-packed sci-fi thriller, with all the impact and imagination of the original novel, don't expect to find it in this sequel. I came away from this read with the impression that Herbert threw "Messiah" together to pontificate a bit, to honor some publishing agreement, or perhaps both. Buy "Messiah" if just to keep Herbert's Dune Legacy alive and breathing, but be forewarned: this sequel has scarcely a "worm" in it, honestly.

1 out of 5 stars Not the same style.......2007-06-28

This book moves away from what makes the first book so appealing. Instead it focuses on the stupid back stabbing and wrangling for position of the king of Dune. This creates a slow book that doesn't develop characters. Where I hated to put Dune down I now wish the planet didn't exist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars IS THE PRINCE OF PERSIA destined to bring forth the final antichrist deception? It may well be so... .......2007-10-02

Within the Shiite Sect, (which is predominate in Iran), it is prophesied that there is a coming 12th Imam who is the great spiritual savior. This Imam is named Abu al-Qasim Muhammad or also called Muhammad al Mahdi. He is said to have been born the son of the 11th Imam, Hasan Al-Askari and his wife, the granddaughter of an Emperor. There are conflicting statements of her name being either Fatima or Nargis Khatoon.

Most accounts of the story say that al Mahdi went into hiding as a child around the age of 5 years (about 13th Century). It said he has been `in hiding' in caves ever since but will supernaturally return just before the Day of Judgment. According to the Hadith the criteria for the Hidden Imam are:
He will be a descendant of Muhammad and the son of Fatima
Will have a broad forehead and pointed nose
Will return just before the end of the world
His appearance will be preceded by a number of prophetic events during 3 years of horrendous world chaos, tyranny and oppression
Will escape from Madina to Mekkah, thousands will pledge allegiance to him
Will rule over the Arabs and the world for 7 years
Will eradicate all tyranny and oppression bringing harmony and total peace
Will lead a prayer in Mekkah which Jesus will be at his side and follow in
Remarkably, the 12th Imam theory plays heavily into the world's current concerns with Iran. The Shiite Muslim President of Iran, Ahmadinejad, is deeply committed to the Islamic Messiah, al Mahdi. There have been many through the years claiming to be the Hidden Imam but Ahmadinejad believes he is yet to come. He claims that he is to personally prepare the world for the coming Mahdi. In order to save the world, it must be in a state of chaos and subjugation. Ahmadinejad claims he was "directed by Allah to pave the way for the glorious appearance of the Mahdi". This apocalyptic directive includes some very scary proclamations.

The 12th Imam: Why Is This Especially Important Now?

While Christians look for Jesus' 2nd coming, the Jews await the Messiah and Muslims await the 12th Imam. However, of the three, Allah's designated Mahdi is the only one who demands a violent path to conquer the world. Mr. Ahmadinejad, and his cabinet, say they have a `signed contract' with al Mahdi in which they pledge themselves to his work. What does this work involve? In light of concerns over Iran's nuclear capabilities, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly stated Israel should be wiped off the map. He spoke to the United Nations in September '05. During that speech he claims to have been in an aura of light and felt a change in the atmosphere during which time no one present could blink their eyes. Iran's PM is also said to have spoken in apocalyptic terms and seems to relish conflict with the West whom he calls the Great Satan. This is while he proclaims he must prepare the world for the coming Mahdi by way of a world totally under Muslim control. He is working hard to bring about the world-wide horrors that must be in place for their al Mahdi to bring peace.

This notion and goal, along with a violent hatred of infidels, America and Israel reminds us of Biblical prophecies of the coming anti-Christ and the pledges of millions to a deceiving False Messiah who will claim to bring peace. Could this 12th Imam Mahdi and his servant Ahmadinejad spark the last days of the coming true Savior?

Here is a book which examines these very current events from the perspective of Islamic eschatology: what many believe is THE INEVITABLE unfolding of EndTime events. The author makes a very good case for understanding the very real conflict between BIBLICAL prophetic truth, ... and the Islamic-agenda in our very day and time. - Read it, ... and then PRAY for wisdom and insight.
Pastor Len Hummel, Clearlight Ministries, Intl.

5 out of 5 stars the future is now.......2007-10-01

The author compares end times events of Islam and Christianity side by side, the results are eerily earth shattering. Islam's Messiah is very much like the Anti-Christ. Islam's Jesus Christ is like the false prophet. Islam's Anti Christ is like Jesus Christ. Islam's claims:

1. Their Messiah will make a 7 year treaty with a descendant of the High priest Aaron.

2. They behead their enemies such as Christians(method of killing the 5th seal saints).

3. They seek world domination ruled by their Messiah.

4. They deny the Deity, Incarnation, and death and resurection of Jesus Christ. (In 1 John, this is the spirit of anti-christ).

Some rebuttals:

1. The Islamic messiah will demand worship of himself.

Rebuttal to above sentence: 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 (God will allow the people to be deceived by the anti-christ)

Convincing. Covers Daniel's prophecy about the various empires ruling Israel very well. This may be the real deal. Take it with a grain of salt.

5 out of 5 stars If you read only one book..........2007-09-25

This should be it. As others have said there are lots of popular books interpreting Revelation and Daniel's vision of the end times hitting the top seller lists, but truth is seldom popular.

The best thing about this book is the lack of speculation on events to come. It simply informs Christians of the parallels between the end times forseen in the Bible and that forseen by Islam.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Connections.......2007-09-25

The reemergence of Islam is something that's caught most of the West by surprise.. and those Christians in the West are no different.

Any examination of history should instruct us that violent Islam is nothing new. What is new though is that Islam is reenergized in a world that now has a Jewish state.

The great enemy of Israel at the End Time that the Bible writes about at length has to come from somewhere. And just as the emergence of Israel in 1948 caused a profound re-think of prophecy , so does the emergence of Israel's global nemesis.

This book is simply outstanding at doing what so many people are either unable or unwilling to do... look at what Muslims themselves say and believe regarding their own End Time.

By simply taking Islamic sources and comparing them to the Bible one finds a glaring match, each side from its own point of view.

EVERYTHING Chrisitans find evil in the Antichrist, the Muslims find good in the Mahdi.

The Muslims are raised from birth to exalt the AntiChrist. And as Islam spreads around the world, the one-world religion that many Christians thought was some New Age nonsense that would spring from nowhere and then everywhere is nothing but a fantasy. The One World Religion is right in front of us.

Our world is at risk and our leaders are clueless. The Leftists are especially clueless... stuck in their 1968 world. They don't realize it's really 622 AD and their time of choosing is coming... Submit to Islam or be killed.

5 out of 5 stars Antichrist: Islam's Awaited Messiah.......2007-09-07

This is the best book about the coming Mahdi that I have ever found. I highly recommend it to those who are studying Islam or those who just want to know. I really learned a lot from this book and it only confirms what I have read before about Islamic Prophecy.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2006-09-25

Although Mr. Wheatley is a little verbose in sections, his documentation of Zen Buddhistic Principles found throughout the disciplines of Mathematics, Physics, Theology, etc. forms a nice reference guide for anyone tuned into that wavelength. In particular, his explanation of how Godel's Theorem and Cantor's "Confusion" shed great light on the difference between GOD's Logic and Man's Logic should be a revelation to any undergraduate level math students who encounter these ideas for the first time. Curiously, Mr. Wheatley makes many misstatements about both Zen Buddhism Principles and the Bible, however. For example, by accepting the false biblical teaching of Original Sin, he misses the point that eating the proverbial apple gave Adam and Eve the ability to make Moral Discernments in fulfillment of GOD'S PERFECT PLAN. As proof, read Genesis 1 which states that Man and Woman were made in GOD's Image. Genesis 4 shows that Adam and Eve weren't the first humans on Earth at all, there were plenty of others by then. The allegorical meaning of the story of Eden, then, isn't that Adam and Eve were the first humans on Earth, but they were the first humans with the ability to make Moral Discernments (in GOD's Image). In fact, Moral Discernment is God's Unique Gift to Man, which is the basis of consciousness, not some Math Formula. But because the wages of the resulting, unavoidable sin are Death, many people foolishly try to return to Eden by: (1) living a sinless Life (2) by removing choice altogether by passing and enforcing strict Laws (3) by attempting to do away with Moral Discernment and the resulting consequences for our actions altogether by trying to remove Shame from Shameful actions. GOD is not some ethereal Man-In-Space, but is simply the Totality of all Real Things, The Set of All Real Sets. GOD's Love manifests itself from the amazing sub-atomic relationships that underly this magic Life all the way to the grandest of Macroscopic Scales, the Interconnected Totality itself. The Zen Buddhism connection can be found by simply superimposing the 0 symbol and the symbol for infinity (8 on its side) in Mr. Wheatley's supposedly "new" formulation that 1 = 0 x infinity. Superimposing them gives you the yin-yang symbol. A potential disadvantage of artificially separating the infinity from the zero, however, is that Mr. Wheatley is able to equate the entire expression to be equal to 1. This potentially might obscure the fact that the deepest meaning of the yin-yang symbol is that it is both 2 and 1 AT THE SAME TIME. His overall equation does preserve that important meaning by utilizing a single element on one side of the equation and two elements on the other side of his final TOE equation. This may be hard to see for some at first, however, which could potentially obscure the richest meaning of this beautiful symbol/equation. A much more GODLY TOE, in my opinion, comes from Euler, who discovered that e ^ (i * pi) - 1 = 0. When someone can explain that relationship, then they can say they know GOD.

3 out of 5 stars A life changing experience??.......2005-06-13

This book is an easy read and does succeed in being somewhat thought-provoking. However, I am a little surprised at the awesome, "life changing" experience it apparently was for many of the readers. Wheatley's conclusions were interesting but nothing really new. All of his material should have passed through the mind of any thinking person without the aid of this book.
The reason I gave this book three stars is because he uses unneccessarily wordy ways of describing simple things. Also, the author and many other reviewers insist that Wheatley makes only one assumption. Wrong-his whole theory is one big assumption.
Overall though it was a very interesting and worthy book.

5 out of 5 stars Should be Required Reading for everyone.......2004-06-26

This book will change your life. You will never think the same way you did before reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Important Book.......2004-01-26

I must preface my review by stating that I have never been so excited and moved by a book that I have wanted to contact the author. That is what I found myself doing upon reading this book. This book is just what its title says. The author does not "miss a beat" describing in great detail using practically every aspect of scientific knowledge from atomic structure through logic to quantum theory---we are even given a valuable explanation of Love. This text may be challenging to read for those unfamiliar with scientific terminology. And it can also be difficult for those with a science background, such as myself. However, for me it is well worth the work necessary to strive to understand the unfamiliar terminology. (I am continually learning from this book. I am presently on my third reread).

One of the author's main messages is "not" to believe anything without first verifying it with reality, as we know it. He calls it the "Personal Explanation Principle". He indicates that religions are just such belief systems that we as people "fall" victims of; because we do not verify the beliefs with the facts, as we know them, of reality. He gives a very detailed explanation of how the New Testament can be explored using his methodology.

The author methodically and meticulously walks us through his thought processes, which took 30 years to assimilate, of delineating the structure of reality and the nature of consciousness. Included in the "walk" are many of reality's phenomena made revelatory. An example of that, for me, would be the dual nature of light. It's particle/wave duality, which is explained as "functions". Also, when the author took me on the mental journey of "Setness" an exhilaration of the magnificence of life swelled up in me.

To me this is a very important book that should be read by all that are seekers of truth. It is for all those wanting to gain an understanding of the purpose for their existence, wanting to know where life is headed towards, and wanting to know who God is.

This book will enlighten and develop one's mind substantially. You will discover that this is our objective.

And yes, I contacted the author and he responded openly.

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating!!!.......2002-12-30

This is a really great book. It combines philosophy and science in order to tackle a multitude of existential problems. The author's style of writing is fresh and alive, I recommend ths book to anyone interested in expanding the fronteirs of their understanding. Books I also liked are a Universe in an Nutshell by Steven Hawkings and Descent into Illusions by Paul Omeziri.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Scholarship.......2007-05-14

Arnold Fruchtenbaum is one of the best scholars of Judeo-Christian Scripture I've found. His books should be among the foundational works for evangelical Christian thinking. Jewish readers would also gain insights into Christianity and historic Judaism by reading his works.

5 out of 5 stars Book of Revelation is Finally Crystal Clear!.......2007-05-02

This is a WONDERFUL verse by verse explanation of the Book of Revelation! Most people don't realize what a truly Jewish book the book of Revelation is, it is only hard to understand IF you don't understand the OT. Dr. Fruchtenbaum is a Messianic Jew and the BEST teacher to explain the Scriptures from a Jewish perspective. What other perspective SHOULD there be? Jesus was a Jew, lived and taught the Jews, etc. So a Jewish perspective to one's Bible study is imperative if one is to understand the Bible - and ESPECIALLY Revelation.

Footsteps of the Messiah makes Revelation and end times Scripture clear and understandable in every day language. Dr. Fruchtenbaum thinks of everything.........so he included in the back of the book a Scripture Index, so you can look up ANY other Scripture and go directly to the page on which he talks about it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Footsteps of the Messiah.......2007-04-08

Fantastic! Best book I've ever read that clearly states the prophecies from Biblical scriptures and clarifies prophecies of the "end times".
Especially appreciate the updates in the revised copy.

5 out of 5 stars The Footsteps of the Messiah........2007-01-11

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone wanting to understand the Bible more thoroughly and future events. It was a very good book due to it answering many questions I had involving Bible texts. The book really gave me the incentive to re-read the Bible having the knowledge that different scripture relates to different time periods in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Best Chronological Study of End Time Events.......2006-07-14

If you want to study the Biblical prophecy of end time events, as they happen in chronological order, then Footsteps is the book to read. In fact, it is the book to read anyway. Dr. Fruchtenbaum is the most authoritative author you will find. I have heard him speak on several occasions, and his thinking is coherent and compelling. He presents all the facts, discusses all opposing points of view, and presents facts to approve and disprove those points of view.

Book Description

Isreal's feasts are infinitely more important than just a series of cultural observances. These feasts are appointed by the Lord, and they are owned by the Lord. He calls them " my feasts." Together they form God's prophetic calendar, outlining the work of history's most important person...Jesus, the Messiah. As such, few themes are more timely or rewarding for God's people today.

The Feasts of the Lord covers all aspects of the biblical feasts...historical background, biblical observance, and prophetic significance. Yet, this book is not just another reference book on the feasts. It is written from the Hebrew Christian viewpoint, helping you to see the feasts through Jewish eyes.

The words of the Savior, His messianic claims, and Bible prophecy will all take on a rich, new relevance for you against the exciting backdrop of The Feasts of the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest of Information.......2007-02-16

The pages are falling out of my copy of "The Feasts of the Lord" simply because of how many times I have referred to it while preparing lessons or sermons. I am almost brought to tears every time I read of the literal meaning of the "afikomen" at Passover. I gave a copy of this book to a Jewish friend who helped me in proofing the manuscript of "Maccabee." Though "The Feasts of the Lord" demonstrates unapologetically the New Testament fulfillment of the Old Testament feasts, the book was well received. A big thank you to the authors.

5 out of 5 stars Want to better understand the Norfolk Southern management style?.......2007-09-24

As unlikely as it may seem, the foundation for Norfolk Southern's management style can be found within the pages of these two books. Brosnan had quite a role in the earliest days of Norfolk Southern and certainly was no admirer of Norfolk And Western as Volume 2 makes abundantly clear.

It is shocking to read of the horrid treatment so many received at the hands of this man. Morgret strives mightly to depict Brosnan in a positive light, but the autocratic manner in which he ruled Southern Railway comes through loud and clear.

For all the blather about Brosnan's "innovations", the case could be made he was simply lucky to have the booming economy of the 1960's Deep South to work with. Al Perlman of New York Central was just as quick to adopt modernized technology and management styles, but was unsuccessful because of the economic situation within the northeast US during the same time period.

This book is highly recommended as one of the best depictions of modern era railroad management.

4 out of 5 stars Bill Brosnan: A True Titan of Industry!.......2000-11-25

The evolution of the railroad business was forseen and then affected more by one man than by the entire rest of the industry. The life-story of Bill Brosnan is a compelling account of a man obsessed with ensuring the long term viability of railroads in general and the Southern Railroad in particular. Some readers may be discouraged from reading this book due to its length, but for those who do start it in earnest, learning of Brosnan's timely intiatives and inventions and observing his unique management style make this book hard to put down. The book's sub-title, "The Railroad's Mesiah" is well put and if you have any interest in 20th century railroading or just in business biographies, this book is full of surprises.

5 out of 5 stars The best Quantum Mechanics book that has ever been written. For serious people only .......2006-06-06

The best Quantum Mechanics book that has ever been written. For serious people only. I, as a university physics lecturer of 22 years of experience, very very strongly recommend this book to every serious student. But, these two volume books must be studied with an endless patience. My way of studying it is: two pages a day. Therefore, you can complete them in two years time. By the way, if someone owns a solutions manual these two volume QM books, please notify me at nyildiz@cumhuriyet.edu.tr.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2006-04-07

Although the presentation of the material still assumes a knowledge of classical mechanics and magnetism (an approach that has since been abandoned in quantum mechanics texts), the book is remarkably self-contained (the exercises, however, are not). The exposition is very clear, and the early part of the book uses a historical framework while the remainder covers the usual material in the usual way.

I would not suggest using the book as a main text for learning quantum mechanics, but I've used it several times as a reference book (and a very affordable one at that). You could think of it as a poor man's Cohen-Tannoudji.

4 out of 5 stars Great Buy-review by author of Quantum Mechanics Demystified.......2006-02-21

With the high price of textbooks these days this little gem is a fantastic buy. The book is thick-think of getting both volumes of Cohen-Tannoudji wrapped into one. It begins with the standard review of "old" quantum theory, carefully explaining the photoelectric effect and all that. The presentation is nice, detailed, and physically insightful. It also includes things like the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rules that might get left behind in modern treatments. After this he has an excellent chapter on "matter waves and the Schrodinger equation", with an excellent discussion of wave packets and quanitzation of atomic energy levels. I found this chapter alone made purchasing the book worthwhile. The rest of the book goes into the formal development of quantum theory and studies central potentials, scattering, the harmonic oscillator, angular momentum and all that. At $19 bucks you can't go wrong buying this book.

2 out of 5 stars messiah the messiah.......2005-06-11

This book seems an effort for including in two volumes a wide vision of quantum relativistic and non relativistic theory. The result is erratic. In the first chapters, messiah accumulate an enormous quantity of material: The old ondulatory mechanics is remixed with some formal modern approach, poorly logical matched, provoke a great confusion. The chapter dedicated to central potentials and scattering contains a lot of formulas not deduced in the text, and the reader is compelled to the appendixes that are very disordered. There is no logical ordering in this part of the book too. The chapter dedicated to angular momentum is in some extent influenced by the nuclear physics orientation of the whole book, and offers some very difficult problems next to easy ones. Symmetries are very formally treated, and the author offers some mathematic instruments poorly explained. The effort along the book to maintain a rigurous dirac notation make it entagled, and the case of the perturbation theory is really hard to understand for this reason. The best chaters of the book are those contained in the last part(relativistic quantum mechanics), and the introduction to the quantized field theory, thus the whole valoration of the book can not be very good.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Thorough Book.......2003-12-23

The book is thorough and covers all the topics in Quantum mechanics. The chapters follow just the way Q.M developed over the years. The reader would find it even more interesting if he/she has some background in Classical Mechanics because Messiah often refers to Hamilton-Jacobi equation, Action and Hamiltonian in general.

The book also develops Bra-Ket algebra in a very easy way, something I have not seen any other book.Messiah's way of treating scattering problems is quite different from that of the others. He doesn't make use of Green's Function but uses the wave-packet approach.

This books gets 3 stars because it's quite verbose. Messiah often gets stuck in explaining things over and over again(therefore the size of the book!). The drawback is that there are few problems per chapter and are quite difficult. This does not help the student gain confidence in the subject. The book assumes you are familiar with Electrodynamics.

Jesus was Jewish not Christian! I have loved my Christian Jesus for as long as I can remember but now I am realizing that the Jesus I thought I knew actually did Jewish customs while on earth because He was a Jew. Christians need this book to understand that our God is a Jewish God. It doesnt change the love He has for us it just helps us to understand Him better. Great Book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2006-11-18

This book is the best for an overview of the 7 festivals described in Leviticus 23. I use this book for teaching classes on the Festivals and have found it the most comprehensive book for this purpose. It not only describes the Fesitivals, but gives the historic and prophetic significance of the Festivals. It is easy to read and is an excellent reference.

3 out of 5 stars Fair, but faulty, analysis of the Jewish Festivals of the Torah.......2006-02-17

First, please know that I agree wholeheartedly with the most basic premise of Chumney's book--that the Festivals commanded in the Torah point to Christ--and that it is not my intention to disparage the premise of this book or its basic theology. On the contrary, I agree with it VERY much.

Those things said, I must regretfully give this book and "it's ok" rating (3 stars) rather than something better. In fact, I would be more likely to give it two stars than four. Before you disagree with me, please read the rest of my review.

--------------------------------------------------
Since this is such an unmanageably long review, and most of you won't read it, I offer this as perhaps the best piece of advice I can give: the author has posted his book at his site, www.hebroots.org. (You'll have to scroll down to the heading "Books by Eddie Chumney") Before buying, perhaps you should check there to see if my review is correct.
--------------------------------------------------

As already stated, I actually agree with the premise of Chumney's book. Sadly, Chumney falls far short of actually providing a work that successfully and persuasively proves that point. There are enough faults in the book to seriously detract from his effectiveness as an author. But I'll talk about the good stuff first.

(1) Chumney organizes the book in a manageable format, which makes for easy reference. You can easily re-find points made in the book, because it is organized by headings. One can easily thumb through any given chapter, reading chapter headings only, and get the gist of what Chumney is trying to say.

(2) Chumney's premise, again, is a good one. As a Christian, I find it to be amazingly profound to study just how deeply the Torah (Pentateuch) and the rest of the Tanakh (Old Testament) point to Christ--particularly the Torah. Upon study, it appears that the pages are literally dripping with allegories, portraits, and details about Christ. Further, I agree with Chumney that in order to understand the parallels with which the Torah is rife, one must study and understand the Jewish customs surrounding the practices depicted there.

(3) The book is succinct, with a generally large amount of scripture references to keep the reader informed of where Chumney gets his information. Thus, one can easily read this book, and in most cases, can corroborate what Chumney says. I have obviously qualified this statement, and will discuss that qualification shortly.

After talking about the good things in Chumney's book, I now turn to the things which I find to seriously detract from the book's effectiveness.

(1) Poor writing. Yes. As already stated twice, I AGREE with the general premise of this book. However, the writing is sub-par. There is inadequate use of synonyms, varied writing style, and developed rhetoric. I'm not just being picky--I just know good writing when I see it, and this unfortunately does not qualify. I'll give an example.
Chumney SERIOUSLY encumbers his work by parenthetically including transliterated Hebrew words. For examble, every time Chumney uses the word "Messiah" it is followed by the Hebrew transliteration, as in the following example:

The festivals of the L-rd...were given...so His people
could understand the coming of the Messiah (Mashiach)...
(Chapter 1, page 1, first sentence.)

On that very page, which only includes two small paragraphs, the same convention of using the "(Mashiach)" after "Messiah" is used two more times. I can understand Chumney's desire to use Hebrew words in a work of this type, especially since he expects a part of his audience to be Jewish. Very well. Then use the Hebrew words. Don't use both, throughout the entire book. If he wanted to use the Hebrew words, he should swap the order and say "Mashiach (Messiah)" the first time he uses the word, then use "Mashiach" the rest of the book, and could easily include a glossary for quick reference. As it is, the parentheticals get REAL distracting, REAL quick. In the first five pages of the book, there are no less than 44 such parentheticals...and the quantity does not go down throughout the book.

(2) Poor logic. The general purpose of Chumney's book is to be persuasive. However, he makes his argument much LESS persuasive by making rather large leaps of faith...in both theology and in logic. While I noted above, in the positives, that Chumney includes biblical cites for his assertions in most places, those cites do NOT always support his claim. Take the following example, found on page 14:

The Bible says that the L-rd's right hand destroyed
the Egyptians (Exodus [Shemot] 15:6, 12). The right
hand is a term for the Messiah, Yeshua (Psalms
[Tehillim] 44:3; 48:10; 63:8; 74:10-11; 89:13; 98:1;
110:1; 118:16; 138:7; Isaiah [Yeshayahu] 41:10; 53:1-5;
62:8; Acts 2:32-36; 5:31-21; Hebrews 1:3.

Well, I won't insult you by going through each passage, but suffice it to say that if you look up EVERY one of the passages above in the long string he includes, you will find that NOT ONE of them refers directly to the Messiah, but refers to one of two things: (1) the arm of the Lord by which he defends his people and accomplishes victory for them, and (2) the figurative place of status at God's right hand. While Christ is identified as occupying this position many times, the right arm of God itself is not a direct reference to Christ, unless you do a fair amount of text-adulteration. Chumney then goes on to make the ridiculous logical jump that since Christ is the "arm of the Lord" then this explains why it is custom today for Jews to eat the shankbone, or "arm" of the lamb. Seems an absurd stretch to me.

I'll include one more unfaithful reading of the text. In Acts 1:6, Christ's Apostles asked Christ when he would restore the kingdom to Israel. Chumney reads this to mean asking when God would re-unite the Gentiles with the Jews. This is very far from the most natural reading of the text, which suggests simply that the Apostles expected Christ, upon his resurrection from the dead, to establish a temporal kingdom. I invite you to read it for yourself.

(3) Chumney simply doesn't support his assertions of fact, or of theology on way too many points. In a piece of literature like this one, it is imperative that the author support his propositions with scripture or other authors, at least where possible. Failure to do so raises serious questions as to the validity of the author's arguments. I invite you to read more scholarly works, such as those written by Alfred Edersheim (dated, but still very good) and compare.

Bottom line: decent, but before you buy, read it online at the above link.

1 out of 5 stars Edward Chumney's version of the seven festivals.......2004-06-04

This is a gentile perspective of the Jewish perspective. It is too cumbersome to read to the end. The transliterations are not accurate. It is definitely not something that a Jewish person would be able to get through, whether a believer or not a believer in Messiah. It is better to write from your own personal experiences and culture. When you try to enter into someone else's culture, it is not the same.

I personally want to see the Jewish people come to believe that Yeshua is the Messiah and I at the same time want to see the Gentile people come to believe that Yeshua(Jesus) is the Messiah. Each are to remain in the culture and religious background that they came from minus the idolotries and other sins in their lives.

An understanding of the entire Bible is very important. A person does not need to become a Bible scholar to be saved. But to know how to live before and unto the L-rd is very important. the feast of Israel are a part of a Jewish person's lifestyle and a Jewish Believer's lifestyle and a Gentile Believer's lifestyle. Each must know that the central part of each feast is G-d and He will impress upon you how to walk before Him.

This is an excellant book. Eddie Chumney writes very methodically which makes it easy to remember and understand. For anyone interested in their Hebraic Roots this one is the best in regard to understanding the Bibical past, present and future. All your questions will be answered as you read this book.
This book also uncovers milleniums of misunderstanding. It is worth the time to read.
