Book Description
The innovative designs in silver jewelry made in Europe and North America in the 20th century are fascinating and highly popular today. This new book starts with the end of Victorian styles, just before the turn of the twentieth century, and proceeds to display and explain the relationships in Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Mexican, Native American, Mid-century Realistic, and Modern Abstract styles right up to the 1990s. Beautiful color photographs clearly show the details, makers' marks, and fine workmanship that make each piece of jewelry fascinating to so many collectors today.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Designer Resource!.......2001-03-14
As a jewelry designer, I found this book to be incredibly valuable. While the text is not particularly well written, the photography is outstanding. Great detail shots. Many of the pieces have pictures from the back as well as the front, which is very valuable if you are trying to determine how a piece was made. Signature marks are shown as well. It is a good chronological view of the history of jewelry using spectacular examples of work. I learned a great deal from this book and would recommend it to other designers. As a book for collectors, I thought the assessment information (good, better and best) was without meaningful context and also had no monetary reference. Designers - this is a 5 star book. Collectors - this is a 3 star book.
Nancy Schiffer's "Silver Jewelry Designs".......2000-10-03
I collect silver jewelry--mostly Mexican & bought this book as a reference.
I think the photos are great, especially the colorful ones in the first part of the book on Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, & Art Deco jewelry, however, the "Values Reference" price guide in the back is very poor. There are no prices listed for many of the pieces shown in the book & the descriptions in the price guide often don't quite match up with the descriptions accompanying the photos, so it is hard to determine the correct price. Also, I think some of the prices quoted are way too high if you compare the prices in the book with, for example, prices on E-bay.
If this book is ever republished, I think the "Values Reference" should be totally revamped & I think the photo captions should follow a more logical order--such as from top to bottom or clock-wise. In the present edition they often don't.
Buy this book for the lovely photos, but if you need a price guide I don't recommend it.
Pleasing to the eye, frustrating to read........1999-05-09
As a coffee table book, 'Designs' is an excellent and pleasant pictorial example of silver jewelery from around the world. As a reference work for a collector 'Designs' at more times than is acceptable is a headache to read. Attempting to determine which of the illustrations fit the authors descriptions is time consuming and should be unnecessary. This problem is evident in the photos of multiple pieces and in the good, better, best sections. For reference purposes, order is lacking. For good, better, best selection, information is lacking. As a jewelery catalog, this book passes muster. As a reference work, I will return the book to its owner and will not purchase a copy for my own modest library.

Book Description
Sheldon Good and Company is to the real estate business as Sotheby's and Christie's are to the fine art and collectibles businesses. Since 1965, Sheldon Good has sold over 40,000 properties from coast to coast and throughout Canada and the Caribbean. ""Today, we handle every kind of real estate that can be auctioned,"" says Steven Good, CEO and chairman.
The company manages over 70 different classes of real estate, including marinas, exotic game farms, freezer cooler buildings, fishing lodges, bowling alleys, libraries, ranches, private islands, ski resorts, mountains, apartment buildings, police stations, churches, airports, nightclubs, and office buildings.
How exactly does one go about selling such properties? Widely interviewed as an established authority in the field of high-level real estate auctions, Steven Good captures the rarefied atmosphere of these deals with the wit and wisdom of a true real estate maverick. With contributions from other industry leaders and key players involved in each deal, readers will glean the complete, behind-the-scenes story for the first time. Chapter highlights and contributors include:
ò Glamorous life included: art deco hotels, South Beach, Miami; Alan Kravets, president, Sheldon Good and Company.
ò Own a gold mine: mining rights in Montana; Robert Hatcher, Hatcher and Associates and Alan Joscelyn, attorney, Gough, Shanahan, Johnson & Waterman.
ò The man behind the curtain: Trump Plaza of the Palm Beaches.
ò Nothing but net: the former Michael Jordan's Restaurant; Mark Hale, senior vice president, Hinsdale Bank and Trust Co.
ò ""Gently used"" churches: Rev. Frederick Aigner, president, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois.
ò
The jailhouse rocked: Porter County, Indiana, jail; Dave Burrus, president, Porter County Board of Commissioners.
ò
School yard for sale: Evanston School District Headquarters; Hardy Murphy, Ph.D., superintendent.

Churches, Jails, and Gold Mines is an intriguing business narrative about real estate deals at the highest level.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on selling properties in a nontraditional way.......2005-12-29
I picked Steven Good's book up on a recommendation from a friend and enjoyed it immensely. Over the years, Steven has taken a regular brokerage company and innovated the way properties can be sold through the auction process. It was a fantastic read for anyone with even a remote interest in real estate. Good insights on how they made their company 'zoom.'
Enjoy the book!
Going Once, Going Twice, Sold!.......2005-04-25
Going once, going twice, sold to Phil Nowak! I was able to win an auction, held by one of Mr. Good's associates, for the book, Churches, Jails, and Goldmines., at the Collegiate Real Estate Conference at DePaul University. I really enjoyed the book because of my passion for real estate and particularly enjoyed the chapter on Michael Jordan's Restaurant as I have lived in Chicago all my life and am a diehard Bulls fan. This chapter also caught my interest because it focused on foreclosures, of which I have taken a class on foreclosure and REO investing. Anyone interested in real estate should add this book to their collection.
Thanks Steve for so much help.......2004-12-25
As a Real estate auctioneer this book was a great help and a guiding light. A very hummorus and enlighting book. Most of all a target to shoot for in my career. Thnaks a lot to a dreamer that has made them come true
A book you will not want to miss.......2004-12-14
This is a great read. Mr. Good does an amazing job of taking the reader into the world of real estate acutions. Mr. Good's intriguing stories are inspirational to all readers, from sucessful CEO's to young entrepreneurs. Do not skip a fun adventure!!
AN EDUCATIONAL AND INTERESTING READ.......2004-11-02
This phenomenal book has taught me numerous valuable information on how to promote my business, how to draw potential clients, how to utilize the media for my advantage, the result of being surrounded by "intelligent minds", and the four stages of running a successful auction. Steven Good also explains ways on how to build a successful brand name and much, much more? This book taught me that success is in the hands of the beholder. Through hard work and perseverance, prosperity and success will always prevail, and becomes inevitable. It also provided me with a myriad of ideas that greatly enhances my knowledge about real estate, auctioning real estate, and financing real estate. His style and knowledge regarding real estate makes this book very interesting, educational, and easy to read.

Book Description
Bruce Gold, a middle-aged, Jewish professor of English literature, finds himself on the brink of a golden career in politics -- and not a moment too soon, as Gold yearns for an opportunity to transform a less-than-picture-perfect life: His children think little of him, his intimidating father endlessly bullies him, and his wife is so oblivious that she doesn't even notice he's left her. As funny as it is sad, Good as Gold is a story of children grown up, parents grown old, and friends and lovers grown apart -- a story that is inimitably Heller.
Customer Reviews:
Tarnishing Washington.......2005-11-22
In "Good as Gold", Joseph Heller does for Washington what he did to the military in "Catch-22". As a fan of Heller's other works, I had high expectations for this book. While I thought there were a lot of humorous moments, it is a notch slightly below "Catch-22" and "Something Happened".
Welcome to Washington where if something is not working, try the opposite. In Washington, everybody has a job working for the government yet nobody knows what their job is. It makes far less sense than the politics of high school homecoming queen. Enter Bruce Gold. Bruce Gold lives a paradox like the one in Washington. His family lacks respect for him despite his achievements. He is a college professor and author, yet his father respects his high school dropout brother more. When the president likes his writing, Gold seems to be a shoe-in in the president's inner-circle. But first, Gold needs a wife that is not so dumpy. Other extra-marrital affairs might also help his career. Gold has his sights set on the Secretary of State, but he needs more connections and places more stress on his pressured integrity. At this point, Gold wonders if it is all worth the price he is paying. His family still hates him and his soon-to-be second wife is far inferior to the first wife. Is Washington really worth the trouble?
There were a lot of aspects of this book that I liked. I do not feel that the story engaged me in the same way some of Heller's books did. The story just seemed to go to long in some areas and lost me. Heller is a very gifted writer and one of my favorites. I would still recommend this book to others. 4 1/2 stars would be a more appropriate rating.
A novel that boggles the mind!.......2005-05-25
Bruce Gold, an apathetic professor, is offered the chance for success, fame and fortune in Washinton D.C. But, he must first reshape his life, which may mean cutting out his wacky family. Furthermore, he's faced with the task of writing about the Jewish experience in America, but isn't sure he's lived it and thus has to figure out what it is. So, starts Good as Gold.
The novel starts somewhat slowly, with sometimes tiring descriptions of Gold's get-togethers with his strange family. These are somewhat boring in the early part of the book, but do become more entertaining as the book goes on once they begin to become funny. The memembers of his family are strange, particularly his father, mother-in-law and brother. They bring the most entertainment to the family scenes as Gold faces the frustration of dealing with his father's incorrigibility, his mother-in-law's hostility towards him and his brother's prodding and teasing.
The story certainly has laugh-out-loud moments, particularly the scenes in which Gold is conversing with his friend in Washingtong Ralph, who is very vague in what he does and has a contradictory way of speaking. Moreover, is the strange Andrea Conover, a beautiful women in love who with Gold, yet wants to continue her relationships with other men and doesn't see why that would bother Gold. The sexual escapades of Gold are quite entertaining as he seems to have no trouble attracting beautiful women with strange behavior.
The problem with this book is that although it certainly has many funny moments, it doesn't exactly seem to go anywhere. The reader is exposed to quite a few scenes with Gold's family, but maybe a little bit too much. It would have been nice to see more events unfold in Washington D.C., as scenes dealing with politicians are probably the funniest. The story doesn't have much in the way of plot development, but rather numerous funny moments with family, politicians and women. Moreover, the worst parts of the book were the sections dealing with Henry Kissinger. Gold despises him and sometimes whole pages are boringly dedicated to discussion of Kissinger. It bogs down the book.
I've read Catch-22 by Heller and this certainly isn't as funny, but it does have its own hilarity and ridiculous moments worth of quite a few laughs. It isn't great, but I think it's worth reading if you're really interested. I actually give it a little above 3 stars, but not enough to warrant 4.
Classic Heller.......2004-10-28
Joseph Heller is probably the only writer who could always make me laugh out loud. This is a book about a college professor and writer who gets a chance to go to Washington to work for the President. An old friend of his works at the White House and invites him to come to work there, but won't tell him what the job is or when he can start. The friend tells Gold that they want to make a big announcement about the appointment, but want to keep it secret. Everything this guy says is an oxymoron.
Meanwhile, his family is driving him crazy. His father and step mother live in Florida during the winters, but come back to New York for the summer. The whole family is anxious for them to go back to Florida, but they keep stalling. Gold's brother makes idiotic comments, constantly badgering him and trying to get him into a fight. Gold is always being put into a position where he can either argue and look like he's showing off, or ignore the comment and be criticized for ignoring the mistake in his brother's comment.
If you've enjoyed any of Joseph Heller's other books, this is more of the same, so you should get a kick out of this one too.
In footsteps of Kissinger.......2004-08-20
A professor and a writer, Bruce Gold feels unappreciated by his family. He is the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants. He still lives in New York and sees his old friends from his childhood in Coney Island. His friends don't seem to respect him, either.
He sees an opportunity to change his life when he meets an old university friend, the Protestant Ralph Newsome, who used to copy all of Gold's course work and who got better grades for it. Newsome now works for the President, who is impressed by Gold's writings, and a high government position is dangled in front of Gold. To ease his way into the government, he duly decides to divorce his old wife and marry a daughter of a rich establishment family. This leads to humiliation at the hands of the father of that family. "You have aspirations and regrets and feelings of inferiority and I don't," Pugh Biddle Conover tells Gold.
The novel takes place in the late 1970s, after Henry Kissinger's stint as Secretary of State with presidents Nixon and Ford. Gold has been collecting materials about Kissinger for years and plans to write a book about him. Gold detests Kissinger, as does everyone else in the book. Kissinger is "a noisy, babbling fellow who was always trying too hard to be entertaining and made war like a Nazi," Conover says. To which, Gold says, "please don't put me in the position of defending the one person on earth I disapprove of most."
Conover mocks Gold as a Jew and for his political aspirations. Both Conover and Gold's father believe that Jews have no place in government and that Kissinger was an aberration.
Gold is well aware of Kissinger's infamies: "his role in the Cambodian war, in which an estimated 500,000 died," and his involvement in overthrowing the Allende government in Chile. Yet, when Gold angrily asserts that Kissinger wasn't even a Jew, is it because Gold really does detest Kissinger or is it because Gold himself wants to be the first Jewish Secretary of State?
This is a very good novel. Some objections, however, have been made about the ending. Without revealing it, I will say that the unexpected event is the sort of thing that jolts people back into reality, as it does to Gold. Another criticism of the book is the stuff on 1970s politics and events. In my opinion, there wasn't too much of that and also I thought that by mentioning these things, it made the novel more realistic.
"Good as Gold" has been unfavorably compared with "Catch-22." They are different books, despite some similarities (for example, the government officials that Gold encounters could easily have stepped out of "Catch-22"). "Catch-22" is a book mainly about young men and appeals to readers in their 20s (perhaps the only time in their lives they will ever read novels); "Good as Gold" deals with the themes of the middle-aged. It is a book about a mid-life crisis and dealing with aging family members.
It is also a book about an outsider desperately wanting to be an insider and how far he will go to get ahead. Gold believes Kissinger is vile and yet...It's a useful novel because it records a phenomena that occurs again and again in American life. Perhaps another novel about ambition will be written some day about a protagonist who gazes with disgust and envy on Colin Powell or Condoleezza Rice, instead of Kissinger. Until then, we have "Good as Gold."
good, but not gold.......2003-04-25
i once read an interview of joseph heller in which he stated he came up with the idea for novels by coming up with an opening sentence. assuming that to be true here, this is a novel about the jewish experience. when we view this book from that perspective, we have a better appreciation of it. we have gold, who is out trying to write a book about the jewish experience, continually rejecting his jewish heritage. it is not until the end when he finally embraces it.
the political humor is exaggerated and doesn't work as well as it did in catch 22 where the setting of war makes the absurd normal. his family life is archie bunker/michael like except for the very touching lunch between gold and his older brother sid. this conversation brought the family into focus.
other characters like liebowicz and his fiancee's father border on the ridiculous and don't add a lot to the story.
this is not vintage heller. suggest your reread catch 22 instead.

Customer Reviews:
Bakelite Jewelry by Wasserman review.......2007-03-27
This is a very good book for collectors of bakelite. There are lots of pictures of unusual and creative bakelite jewelry that is so hard to value. The pictures are big and easy to see and most include dates which is so important. I especially like the big collection of crib toy brooches that are not often seen. Most of the pieces are from the 1920's, 30s and 40s. None are from the more modern bakelite designers. Still, it is a rich reference for early bakelite jewelry.
THE book for the beginning Bakelite collector!.......2000-05-04
I am a total novice who is just starting to learn about Bakelite jewelry, and even though this book is expensive, it's the best one I've seen and well worth the money. (I also have Tony Grasso's book but don't think it's quite as helpful.) Not only does Wasserstrom's book have loads of beautiful color photos (hence the high price), but it is VERY clear and answers every single question that has occurred to me about Bakelite. It is just loaded with valuable and easy-to-reference information. (Like charts about which styles correspond to which dates, the differences between Bakelite and other types of plastics, etc.) My only tiny complaint is there's no index (true of the Grasso book also). If you're interested in learning about or collecting Bakelite, buy this book!

Book Description
Morgan offers an authentic and deliciously humorous account of the prostitutes and other "disreputable" women who were the earliest female pioneers of the Far North.
Customer Reviews:
Best Of The West!.......2006-06-15
The Alaska-Yukon Gold Rush, a time at the turn of the century, when the gold camps were booming and the dust flowed like wine. Leaving behind law and many of the constraints of the Post-Victorian era, men and women went north to find adventure and wealth. Most found death among the cold frozen mountains and rivers but a few survived to find money, power and, sometimes, even love.
The women found it easier to mine the miners then to mine the mines. Women couldn't work claims in most cases and most of the normal jobs didn't pay well.
If a woman wanted the wealth and adventure she was searching for she ended up becoming a Good Time Girl. Men outnumbered women ten to one and were always willing to pay for the company. Dance hall girls and prostitutes were among the pioneers who opened the new regions, became rich entrepreneurs and powerful women who, in some cases, changed the towns for the better.
But their history cannot be written in a vacuum. As many of them left behind no written records we have to use police logs, old photos and stories left behind by the more respectable women and men of the cities. The book deals with the conditions and events that made the Far North so much different from the lower forty-eight states where many of the women came from. Why did the cities, in many cases, allow a red light district? Why did they give them police protection? How did the women influence the towns and change the very future of the frontier? Why did so many women turn to be Good Time Girls?
With tons of humor, happy endings and sad ones, the chapters within this book give a detailed look at the history of the independent women who faced hardships, lost fortunes and the dangers of a wild land to find a future.
Not Real Interesting.......2005-10-27
I was disappointed in this book, it seemed more like a history of the men of the Yukon and Gold Rush . There were some stories about some of these women in there, but they were not very interesting to me, just sort of dry and lacking the quality that you could see and picture the people-which is a quality I look for in books of a historical nature. If you like just a history of cut and dry facts about the Gold Rush and the men etc., this might be ok, but overall, the book failed to be interesting to me.
Interesting side to the "gold miners".......2004-09-29
Well, the men mined the gold, and the women mined the miners. All had unhealthy jobs but it would appear that more womem made money than the men from this book. It is also interesting that many of the women ended their trade by marrying the miners. So while to some they were "soiled doves" to the miners they were princesses.
Still interesting that the town tollerated this business until very recently. An enjoyable read.
Fun history of the world's (c)oldest profession in AK.......2001-10-10
I bought this book at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks bookstore. My dad, Class of '51 at UAF (we were there for his 50th reunion), had told me some stories about "The Line" and he had had his first job with the gold mining operations, so I was curious. There's not a lot of gory detail here. It's about people and places, but it's quite a colorful history. Though never officially legal, prostitution was tolerated and it flourished in Alaska for more than 50 years. And some very famous characters pop up, like Wyatt Earp and the "Birdman of Alcatraz". Definitely worth the time.
Good Time Girls? should be called Good Time Guys.......2001-06-04
I cruised Alaska this summer and took a facinating tour of the Skagway Red Light district. After the tour, I wanted to learn more, thusly I hit a bookstore and found this book. I was thrilled to find it, as I recognized several of the names (Klondike Kate, PeaHull Annie, etc) and was looking forward to finding out more. The book promised not to leave out any "lusty and licentious parts". That couldn't be more wrong.
I found out more information about the men of the Kondike and their wenching habits, than the actual women themselves. In this case, my wonderfully guided tour gave me more information about how the women actually conducted their business (lots of interesting info about their personal hygene that are no where to be found in this book. what kind of book on prostitution doesn't talk about birth control methods and their ways of preventing VD? VD is barely brought up).
If I wanted to read about the men of the Klondike, I could pick up any random book in the Klondike History section of any bookstore. The women are often the ones forgotten about, and deserve better treatement in the annuls of history, most especially in a book supposedly about those women. If you want some good information on this type of history, go up to Alaska and take any one of the amazing Red Light District tours. Don't waste your money on this book.
