New York City and America's car culture smash together in Calvin Trillin's Tepper Isn't Going Out, a humorous tale of the urban quest for an open parking space. When a mailing-list broker, Murray Tepper, decides to spend his days plugging meters so he can sit in his car reading newspapers and waive off suitors hopeful of gaining his spot, little does he know that his odd behavior (even by New York standards) will set off a media buzz, provide him with cult-hero status, and incur reproach from the paranoid, dour Mayor Frank Ducavelli, who focuses on curtailing Tepper's "abuse" of the parking meter system.
Granted, the plot of this novel is quite thin, but, while not leaving you in stitches, Trillin provokes many smirks and smiles with his wit. For instance, he writes of magazines titled Beautiful Spot: A Magazine of Parking and the potential of Spin: The Magazine of Salad Drying. When Tepper suggests that his friend Jack leave his car's flashers on while parked illegally, Jack responds:
And draw attention to myself? Not a chance. I always park in front of hydrants. The secret is to park smack in front of them rather than just too near them. You have to go all the way. If you're smack in front of them, the cop rolling down the street can't see that there's a hydrant there at all. You have to be brazen. That's my motto, in parking and in life: be brazen.
Trillin's book should appeal to commuters and city dwellers everywhere, and anyone else looking for a chuckle. --Michael Ferch
Book Description
Murray Tepper would say that he is an ordinary New Yorker who is simply trying to read the newspaper in peace. But he reads while sitting behind the wheel of his parked car, and his car always seems to be in a particularly desirable parking spot. Not surprisingly, he is regularly interrupted by drivers who want to know if he is going out.
Tepper isn’t going out. Why not? His explanations tend to be rather literal—the indisputable fact, for instance, that he has twenty minutes left on the meter.
But once New Yorkers become aware of Tepper, some of them begin to suspect that he knows something they don’t. And an ever-increasing number of them are willing to line up for the opportunity to sit in his car with him and find out what it is.
Tepper Isn’t Going Out is a wise and witty story of an ordinary man who, perhaps innocently, changes the world around him.

Tepper's behavior sometimes irritates the people who want his spot. ("Is that where you live? Is that car rent-controlled?") It also irritates the mayor -- Frank Ducavelli, known in tabloid headlines as Il Duce -- who sees Murray Tepper as a harbinger of what His Honor always calls "the forces of disorder."
But once New Yorkers become aware of Tepper, some of them begin to suspect that he knows something they don't know. And an ever-increasing number of them are willing to line up for the opportunity to sit in his car with him and find out.

Customer Reviews:
Amusing big city satire.......2006-11-12
When someone knows the minutiae of parking laws, times and places, and wants to get the absolute most out of time on the meter, they are definitly from the big city and probably from New York City. To those of us that travel there, it is a confusing set of signposts that may often result in an encounter with NYC Parking Po-lice. To Murray Tepper, it is a well known, well marked (mostly) and well travelled map.
Tepper Isn't Going Out is amusing satire, laugh out loud in a few places. Great characterizations (other than Murray himself, the mayor, the pollster, and many of the people on the street) and a plot that borders on ridiculousness while still taking bits and pieces from today's newspaper headlines.
Highly recommended, would make a nice read for a long plane ride or weekend vacation.
I give Tepper the green light...........2006-09-11
Anne Rice has written great novels about immortal vampires. Tom Clancy tells tales of supper powers embroiled in global struggles shaping the political structure of the modern world. In this book, Calvin Trillin writes about a guy in his car. Please don't misinterpret this as implying any kind of road trip anything; the car doesn't actually move. This is Trillin's great `guy sitting in a parked car novel' and is a great satirical look at life in the big city.
Tepper Isn't Going Out: A Novel.......2006-08-06
Very funny, New York centric though my not appeal to the heartland.
A MODERN JAMES JOYCE ULYSSES FOR BLASE NEW YORKERS.......2006-07-13
the ever deadpan Trillin does a great if incomplete job of bringing LEopold Bloom from the Liffey to the East River. Leopold Bloom is enormously generous and concerned for others. Greater love has no man than this, to lay down his wife for his friend, let own his newspaper, etc. But Tepper won't even give another driver his rare parking space. Despite the rationalization that his random grunts administer divine wisdom for hurt souls, Tepper is really just another selfish and self-centered New YOrk slob who'd rather give you the finger than the time of day.
Still a funny if deceivingly simple story of the Gogol type.
I laughed alot.......2005-12-08
A great satire on life in a big US city. Trillin captures the frustration associated with battling life's daily problems; and the obvious incapacity of the politicians who try to make it all work. The parking thing is a clever metaphor.
I moved out long ago. A few days visit to such a place is more than enough. Give me small town America every time.

Book Description
David Nasaw has written a sparkling social history of twentieth-century show business and of the new American public that assembled in the city's pleasure palaces, parks, theaters, nickelodeons, world's fair midways, and dance halls. The new amusement centers welcomed women, men, and children, native-born and immigrant, rich, poor and middling. Only African Americans were excluded or segregated in the audience, though they were overrepresented in parodic form on stage. This stigmatization of the African American, Nasaw argues, was the glue that cemented an otherwise disparate audience, muting social distinctions among "whites," and creating a common national culture.
Customer Reviews:
GOING NOWHERE.......2001-06-20
I agree with the sentiments of the above reviewer, yet I wonder how such negative a review could elicit so many "stars" of evaluation. I tried to teach Nasaw's book in the context of a college course on sports and leisure, with moderate success. Aside from the discussion about white's perceptions of African Americans (a topic which, as the previous reviewer said are not themselves brought into the picture), there is little to no discussion of historical context or the social structure of the urban environments that produced these "public amusements." It seems that Nasaw's book is really part of a larger project, as there is much that needs to be filled in -- especially any detailed discussion of public amusements between 1910 and WWII and beyond. This book would be useful to the specialist of leisure of entertainment in that it is very well documented and covers a very wide territory of leisure practices. But too often the reader is left thinking "So what?" and Nasaw does little in the way of arguing WHY this particular book was written -- why he wrote it in this particular way. All in all, a rather boring and tedious book, though one which is not without its interesting historical facts.
Interesting, but not without flaws........2000-09-24
Nasaw offers an interesting account of the rise of public amusements such as baseball, amusement parks, vaudeville and nickelodeons at the turn of the century. He argues that these amuseuements united European immigrants as "American", in part by denying access to African-Americans. Yet, Nasaw does not adequately weave his discussion of African-Americans into his narrative. Similarly, he does not discuss other ethnic groups such as Asian-Americans and Hispanics, among others to investigate their accessibility to public amusements. Nasaw also limits his account primarily to Chicago and New York, while trying to draw broad implications for the entire country. He has offered very interesting anecdotes and provided a broad history of different amusements at the turn of the century, however, his analytical framework is not without its flaws.

Book Description
Luke is allergic to everything. He spends his days in a sterile safe-haven designed to keep out all light and dirt, while everything he knows about the world comes from books, movies, the internet and whatever his best-friend Julie tells him. He would do anything to go outside.
Julie, brilliant and kind, could be out changing the world. Unfortunately, she’s too afraid of airplane crashes, highway accidents, and potentially life-threatening bacteria to leave her hometown, her pointless waitress job, or Luke.
Charlotte’s boyfriend dropped dead from a brain hemorrhage. She disappeared for awhile, but now she’s decided that she misses her friends.
David has just been diagnosed with testicular cancer. Consequently, he’s no longer wants to spend his days making pizza to pay for school. His priorities in life are changing; he just doesn’t know how, yet.
Leanne has just discovered that she may or may not have magic powers.
When this motley bunch befriends a lottery winner with a generous heart, they all embark on a hysterical and heartwarming journey in search of the healer who just might be able to cure Luke, and perhaps give them the answers they didn’t know they were looking for.
Customer Reviews:
David and Julie and Luke, Oh My!.......2007-10-01
I enjoyed this book, although it wasn't as good as Scarlett Thomas's other books that I have read. The plot is so far-fetched and unusual, and it really grabbed my attention. I was disappointed when it had to end, but at the same point I couldn't put it down because I was so curious what would happen next. I also like how Thomas so eloquently captured the details of today's world, complete with references to popular TV shows, movies, books, Internet sites, and modern conviences such as mobile phones (that means cell phones for those of us in the US). People will read this book twenty years from now and have an idea of what life was like in the early 21st century.
If you haven't read any of Scarlett Thomas's books yet, I recommend that you start with "The End of Mr. Y" rather than "Going Out." However, if you are already a fan of Scarlett Thomas, you'll probably enjoy "Going Out." I especially recommend it to fans of "The Wizard of Oz," which has many parallels to this book. Both books are about a journey to a unknown yet powerful person who supposedly can help the characters find what they have always been looking for. They don't know much about this person who they believe will help them, but they are willing to risk everything they have to get to him. Also, "Going Out" contains many Oz-inspired images, such the green sparkly carpet, the yellow road, the suit of tin foil, the storms, and the witches. However, the characters do not necessarily correspond to the Oz characters, so don't waste your time figuring out if Julie is supposed to be the Scarecrow or the Cowardly Lion, or whether Charlotte or Chantal represents Dorothy.
Also worth noting: Scarlett Thomas seems to have a particular interest in mice. The small furry rodents make an important appearance in this book as well as in "The End of Mr. Y."
Yellow Roads.......2004-06-30
Contrary to the editorial review, I'm a "Gen Xer" and very much appreciated this book's nostalgia. The story is as unrealistic as they come, but quite entertaining. Thomas did a fine job with the characters. And the Wizard of Oz touch was very charming.

Anecdotes and pop psych for beginners.......2003-08-14
This book was a very quick read and somewhat entertaining, but not at all what I had expected or hoped for, especially considering its high secondhand price. The author's information is very basic and she really only gives a general overview of some of the most common traits that pet parrots may exhibit. Some of her suggestions and theories are quite dubious in my opinion. The information the book contains is very anecdotal, and for anyone who has a deep interest in or much knowledge about parrots, or anyone trying to address specific behavioral issues it is very inadequate. I would class it as a decent book for someone who is thinking about getting a parrot or parrot-type bird for the first time and is researching whether or not a bird is the right type of pet for them, but the title is certainly misleading. The book contains some common sense information but nothing new or cutting-edge in bird behavior, and certainly nothing that would indicate that it was written by a "bird shrink". I was very disappointed.
Learn why your bird is such a freak!.......2000-12-01
Birds on the Couch is a cute little book which I enjoyed even though I do not own birds. Ruth Hanessian, who runs a bird store and teaches quarterly "parrot psychology" classes, uses this book to reinforce in the bird owner's mind that bird behavior almost always has some cause to be found in its environment.
For the Polly owner, the endless stream of anecdotes will help calm fears that their bird is insane. For those who don't own birds but enjoy animals it will be nice to see just how complex their moods can be.
Humorous and informational!.......2000-02-15
This wonderful book was humorous and helped me think of ingenious ways to train my bird not have them train me. Ruth (the author)is wonderful! She knows birds and helps others with getting old (PAL in resting homes), parting of their little ones, having fun with your bird, and other stories of what she has seen first hand! It is a wonderful book to see if you would like a bird-because as the book explains birds are unpredictable.
I actually wrote this review after I read the review from a person in Indiana. I couldn't believe it! This book was not about her store it was about people that came to her store with REAL stories and she suggested ideas not concrete solutions because each bird is different and you have to try different things on different birds. The comment about her telling her customers to NOT to go to the vet is not true..it says in the book that they came to her for help, but if the bird was sick or needed help to definitely take it to a vet. People just trust her and asked her opinion first. It was a wonderful book about new birds, older birds, fun with your bird, and just fun to read. It doesn't help you with everything you will encounter with your bird, but it will sure help you through the hard times with humor and dedication! I just met Ruth this weekend at her little store and she does know her birds! She is very passionate about what she does! You will enjoy this book - even if you do not have a bird.
More than entertaining, very informative and well written........1999-08-23
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The author writes with humor AND knowledge from years of experienced bird ownership. I would highly recommend this book to any parrot lover.
excellent.......1999-04-25

Book Description
Last spring Billy Bean, the only living openly gay former major leaguer, gained national attention with his breakthrough memoir, Going the Other Way—an unprecedented chronicle of America’s national pastime that went on to sell more than 25,000 copies. Bean brings us inside the clubhouse and onto the playing field, offering dead-on insight into the game and the physical and emotional demands it makes on players. Bean faced an agonizing choice, in secrecy and solitude, between continuing to play the game he loved and the honesty of a loving relationship. By turns heartbreaking and farcical, ruminative and uncensored, the book culminates in a respectful, deeply felt appeal to Major League Baseball and other professional team sports to live up to their promise of equality and opportunity. A testament to the power of the single voice, Going the Other Way is an exemplary American tale that points the way toward a more perfect game, one in which all men and women can pursue their athletic dreams free of prejudice and discrimination. An eight-page photo insert is featured in this New York Times bestseller.
Customer Reviews:
Billy Bean.......2007-04-01
Great story by a guy that wasted a lot of years not being himself to balance his high profile job. he went through lots of the same tribulation I did.
Thanks, Billy, For Speaking Out! Thanks For Your Courage and Honesty! You've Made More Friends Than You'll Ever Know!.......2007-01-11
Billy Bean hit indeed pitched a shut-out and hit a grand slammer with his autobiography.
Thanks Billy, for speaking out about a universal truth that society dare not speak out about. Traditionally men (all men) have paid a severe price for daring to reveal their affectional feelings for one another, which I believe to be an underlying cause of a great deal of violence and human misery.
I am sure you already had a lot of friends, prior to writing the book. By writing the book you proved to be a true friend of mine, as well as of ALL other men.
Best Wishes.
Fascinating glimpse into the closeted world of major league baseball.......2006-11-10
This is a heartfelt story that has not been told before -- a glimpse inside the world of major league baseball from the perspective of a perceptive and sensitive gay man. Billy writes with real passion about the sport he loves, the incredible pressure to excel, and the high personal price a gay man pays for remaining in the closet. He has a lot to say about the culture of professional sports, how players relate to each other both on and off the field, and what it takes to excel in a very demanding job. And for those who are not baseball fans, a useful glossary of baseball terms and slang is included at the back of the book.
Show's yet another reason for needing gay marriage.......2006-08-21
GREAT story. I am not a sports fan, but couldn't put the book down once I started to read it.
I think Billy helps to prove that the stereotype that gay men are vain is wrong. Here is a man that could have any gay guy he wants and is more interested in love.
Having to miss his partner's funeral almost brought tears to my eyes. This story right there provides yet another reason as to why we need gya marriage in the US>
A solid base hit!.......2006-02-04
Billy Bean played for 3 major league baseball teams (the Dodgers, Tigers and Padres). He was never a star in the majors, but he had a decent career. Would Bean have a story to tell if he was not gay? Maybe, because it seems everyone writes an autobiography these days. This isn't just the story of a gay man. This is the story of a man struggling to discover who he really is.
Bean discusses his childhood, his high school playing days and his years in the minor leagues. While he progressed through life, he always seemed to feel as if something was missing or not quite right. Still he got married and thought he was living the 'right' life.
Eventually and painfully, Bean realized what he was and decided to act upon it, even though he was not ready to go public with everything. Tragically and much too quickly, his first meaningful gay relationship ended with his partner's death due to AIDS.
Bean's story of coping with this loss, while coming to terms with his sexuality is an engrossing story. You can feel Bean's pain. Gay or not, we all go through our own identity struggles. I guess that is one thing that makes Bean's book good. We can all relate to his struggles. Yet, on the other hand, I have no idea what he must have endured, but Bean paints a vivid and often painful picture of his journey. This makes the book a good read for all people.
I won't totally kill the ending, but I will say that it is uplifting and positive.

Customer Reviews:
cultural history of nose rings.......2003-10-25
DEAR AUDIENCE-AT-LARGE:
While the 90's saw a new wave of body piercings, increasingly associated with alternative culture, I'd like to point out one significant exception...
I am Indian. I come from a culture of 5,000 years of recorded history. We've been wearing nose rings for literally thousands of years. It is as cultural as ear piercing is for the Western world.
While I understand the connotation here in the States, I wish people would realise that when an Indian woman wears a nose ring it takes on a much different, cultural and traditional meaning.
I definitely do NOT need to take out my nose ring when I visit my Grandma!! ;)
Thanks for hearing me.
Good Read for Parents.......2003-09-13
If you are a parent of a teen and think you are alone, then think again. If you ever have humorous thoughts as you watch your teen and want to discover what others in your shoes see, then get this book.
Definately a good, positive read. Yep there are places in that are even funny and will make you chuckle. Only parents of teens can get the inside jokes. The funny side of life is also an inspiration.
Get this book and you will not feel alone. In fact you will see how normal you are.
Cooke and Kendrick help us remember when...........2003-08-04
I bought this book for my sister and brother, both of whom have boys on the verge of adolescence, but I read it before I gave it to them. Cooke and Kendrick have done a wonderful job of bringing us back to our own adolescence as a way of helping us cope with our childrens'. As a parent of a 31 year old, I remember the power of this connection as being critical to my working with my daughter's emotional ups and downs and managing to enjoy most of her teenage years. Cooke and Kendrick LIKE teenagers and understand them in a way that is bound to help all parents.

Inspiring.......2003-05-04
Even as a grandma, it sometimes seems to me that my precious teenage grandkids are from a different planet. Don't get me wrong. I love them and want them to express themselves and be their own persons but occasionally I shake my head in dismay and have to bite my tongue. Like when my grandson got a magenta Mohawk haircut and wanted to have an all night rock 'n' roll jam session with beer in my basement. I won't go into the subject of my granddaughter's hiphugger pants which barely cover her public bone. This book puts a lot of things that I didn't know how to deal with into perspective for me. It helps to have others in similar situations share their thoughts. Thanks for giving me a new take on things and lifting my confusion. I guess there's hope for us all after all.
It's About "CONNECTING WITH TEENS"!.......2003-04-28
Don't let the sponsored nose-jewelry links fool you. This supportive book is about living with teens from their parents' perspective. It is not about nasal adornment. Like the many topics the book covers, "nose rings" represent many of the immediately identifiable issues we parents encounter in dealing successfully and unsuccessfully with our teens. Like me, you will find yourself laughing, crying, and nodding along with these life-affirming essays because they're written by people just like us, who are in the trenches every day, struggling, and who really know it's not always easy to make contact with, understand and love those people we sometimes grudgingly call "our kids." This book provides both insight and hope! A big Thank You from the parent of one nose ring wearer and one navel ring wearer.
