Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-09-05

This book has no chapter which is less delightful than another. Just good reading from start to finish!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-08-09

I read this book first when I was 14 and loved it. I ordered it recently on Amazon and was amazed at how at age 28 I easily entered the world of Valancy and fell in love with the characters all over again. Excellent writing, excellent imagery, excellent story line. Loved it. I'm so glad I own it now.

5 out of 5 stars Music for the Soul.......2007-07-18

This is a book that will capture the heart of romantics everywhere. It is sweet and charming yet has a feministic edge to it that was ahead of its time. Anyone who feels as if they have to change who they are to make others happy will love this book. It invokes the question: what would you do if you knew you only had one year left to live? Valancy's answer is to become the woman she always wanted to be instead of living under the strong hand of her close-minded relatives. You rejoice with her as she discovers the world of her dreams. It is by far my favorite L.M. Montgomery book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Characters.......2007-06-07

I love pretty much everything Montgomery wrote - even her recycled short stories show something new and interesting about her as a writer.

That said, what a shame that The Blue Castle lives under the shadow of Anne! This book is a rare joy, the main character flawed and still lovable, strong, smart and kind without being too sugary. The hero (or perhaps anti-hero?) is surprizingly intriguing, and the minor characters a delight. The book combines humor, romance and Montgomery's amazing gift of world building in the best possible combination.

5 out of 5 stars Montgomery's Best Book........2007-06-04

This is easily Lucy Maude Montgomery's best book. Early feminist with fiery tongue and quick wit, she writes romance like she's writing comedy, everything done a mighty island from the corseted Victorian.

Even without this arched and dancing wonder of word construction of Montgomergy's, the plot would be plenty reason to pick up the book. Frumpy, dull Valancy takes a turn for the wild when she discovers she's got a year to live. It's a riot from society, where Valancy changes churches just to annoy her overbearing mother.

I read this in the church library as a little girl, and it was ever after, one of my most favorite books in the whole, wide, wondrous, book-filled world.

Book Description

French Canadian workers who paddled canoes, transported goods, and staffed the interior posts of the northern North American fur trade became popularly known as voyageurs. Scholars and public historians alike have cast them in the romantic role of rugged and merry heroes who paved the way for European civilization in the wild Northwest. Carolyn Podruchny looks beyond the stereotypes and reveals the contours of voyageurs’ lives, world views, and values.

Making the Voyageur World shows that the voyageurs created distinct identities shaped by their French-Canadian peasant roots, the Aboriginal peoples they met in the Northwest, and the nature of their employment as indentured servants in diverse environments. Voyageurs’ identities were also shaped by their constant travels and by their own masculine ideals that emphasized strength, endurance, and daring. Although voyageurs left few conventional traces of their own voices in the documentary record, an astonishing amount of information can be found in descriptions of them by their masters, explorers, and other travelers. By examining their lives in conjunction with the metaphor of the voyage, Podruchny not only reveals the everyday lives of her subjects—what they ate, their cosmology and rituals of celebration, their families, and, above all, their work—but also underscores their impact on the social and cultural landscape of North America.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The fur trade and labor relations.......2007-05-13

This book is a scholarly treatment of the French and later British/French-Canadian fur trade in the northern tier of North America. It looks at the fur trade from the perspective of labor relations, and clearly identifies the differences in class, culture, and power that were common to the 18th and 19th century especially in connection with the North American fur trade. The author covers the ground thoroughly, and readers will come away having learned a great deal. As a scholarly writer, it seemed to me, however, that Podruchny was sometimes trying too hard to make the mundane seem interesting, or to draw conclusions that were just slightly strained. Overall a well-done presentation of the British fur trade from a new perspective, and a valuable recent addition to the literature about this part of North American history.

Book Description

2004 MINNESOTA BOOK AWARDS FINALIST! Do you live to knit? Have you made finding that perfect shade of periwinkle yarn an obsession? Have you ever stayed up to the wee hours of the night just to see how a yarn pattern would knit up? If you answered ""yes"" to any of these questions, you’ve caught the knitting bug. Never fear; you’re certainly not alone in your affection for knitting. From New York City to Newton, Iowa, Americans are embracing this craft in record numbers. Knit cafes, local knitting groups, and online chat rooms have helped spread the craze and have made it easier than ever for knitters to meet other enthusiasts and swap knitting tips. It’s this universal sense of community and passion for knitting that is at the heart of "For the Love of Knitting", an anthology that pays tribute to this popular pastime and to those who knit. The wide variety of personal essays and stories celebrate the appeal and love of this age-old art. The funny, heartwarming, and sometimes sad tales by Jamaica Kincaid, Elizabeth Zimmermann, Melanie Falick, Meg Swansen, Perri Klass, Pam Allen, Naomi Dagen Bloom, Susan Gordon Lydon, Lela Nargi, and Teva Durham touch on all aspects of knitting, from shearing the sheep to knitting the first stitch; from knitting for the war effort to giving a finely knitted hat, sweater, or socks as a gift. A stunning array of artwork, including current and historical photographs, vintage ads, pattern booklets, and paintings—featuring the artistry of Chris Hartlove, Solveig Hisdal, Debbie New, and Karen Searle—complements the text.

3 out of 5 stars Get the facts straight . . ........2007-09-28

Whenever I find a factual error in a non-fiction book, I immediately begin to wonder what other errors are in it, and I tend to mistrust the book altogether. Toward the end of For the Love of Knitting, there is a nice piece on Elizabeth Zimmerman, Schoolhouse Press, and Meg Swansen. However, the author tells us that Mrs. Swansen continues to run the company with her husband Chris. Chris Swansen passed away many years ago--any knitter with any knowledge of this family would know that! That oversight completely turned me off the book, and I gave it away.

4 out of 5 stars For Dedicated Yarnophiles.......2006-11-08

The first time I picked up this book, I was a newbie knitter. I flipped through it and thought, "Nnnnh. No patterns. Pretty pictures." And then I set it back on the shelf. Fast-forward three years. NOW, as a self-admitted fiber addict, I looked at -- and read -- this book with a new eye. I loved the vintage knitting pictures, adored the essays, and truly enjoyed the whole package. If you love yarn and knitting, you'll love this book. It weds intelligent, emotional writing about knitting with awesome images.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for any knitters library!.......2006-06-17

I recently found this book at the public library and can't believe that I missed it when it first appeared in print two years ago. What a wonderful collection of stories coupled with fantastic historic photographs and old knitting advertisements. Some of the advertisements and particular products I remember from the 60's when I was learning to knit from my mother, she is no longer with me but it brought back lots of great memories. I plan to purchase the book for my own knitting library.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful knitting book with no patterns!.......2006-03-17

This book isn't cheap! and I am on a budget. But it is worth every penny. It is packed full of lovely stories about knitting and the knitter. It also has great knitting advertisments from yesteryear ,paintings, and photographs of people knitting. It is a beautiful knitting book without a single pattern and it will be read over and over. A great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Put Down.......2005-10-30

I love this book and have gifted it to many of my knitting friends. I'm usually not much for coffee table books, but this one is so hard to put down.

I remember the first time I saw this book: I was in a bookstore, shopping for a specific gift for a friend and I didn't have the funds to purchase For the Love of Knitting that day. But the memory of the beautiful images in this book stayed with me. It was a few months before I bought it for myself. I'm glad that I did. The photography is stunning. The book is composed primarily of photos; the stories and prose that accompany them are informative and fun. Lily Chin's Top Ten List of Places to Hide Your Stash is side-splittingly funny.

As mentioned in previous reviews, this book contains no patterns. I don't mind, my hands need a break once in awhle!

    Book Description

An anthology of stories and memoirs relating to quilts, quilting, quilt folklore, and history that has something for every quilter. This Old Quilt reflects the art and complexity of quilts and quiltmaking.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars --An entertaining and beautiful book--.......2004-04-12

THIS OLD QUILT is a delightful patchwork of quilts, stories, art illustrations and vintage photographs. I was fascinated from the first moment and didn't want to put the book down.

There are five chapters in THIS OLD QUILT and they offer stories about learning to quilt; the quilting traditions of the Amish, Hopi Indians and African Americans; the warmth and love that comes from homemade quilts; the camaraderie of quilting bees; and many lovely stories and poems concerning the American tradition of quilting.

I was so happy to see many of the paintings of Sandi Wickersham that were used to illustrate this book. Sandi lives close by and much of her work is indicative of my area of Virginia. I own a few of her prints and it was fun to find them featured in THIS OLD QUILT. Several other artists including Diane Phalen's work was also used in the book. Their colorful and detailed quilting scenes add an extra layer of depth and pleasure to the book.

I poured over the vintage photographs that are mostly black and white or color enhanced. The ladies from the past are shown displaying their work or sitting among friends and quilting together. One 1936 Depression Era photograph is so striking! It's of a lady standing on the porch of a wooden cabin and displaying her gorgeous quilt that was made in the Dresden Plate pattern. The viewer senses that inside that unpainted cabin, life was probably pretty difficult, but this lady was able to make a work of art out of scraps, and a picture of her beautiful quilt endures for all of us to admire.

There are many lovely stories to read and enjoy, of both fact and fiction. My favorites are: HOW TO MAKE AN AMERICAN QUILT by Whitney Otto, THE PERSIAN PICKLE CLUB by Sandra Dallas and HIDDEN IN PLAIN VIEW by Jacqueline Tobin. THIS OLD QUILT is a treasure trove of quilting, memories and lovely pictures. I'm so happy that I treated myself to this endearing book.

5 out of 5 stars QUILTING FROM THE INSIDE.......2002-11-08

It has been said that "Every quilt tells a story." This Old Quilt tells 'The story of every quilt.' The book warms the hearts and educates the minds of quilters and non-quilters, lovers of the art and collectors of lore. As every enthusiastic quilter, collector of quilts and lover of history can tell you, there is an amazing history within the squares of each handmade quilt and in each individual pattern. The artists very spirit goes into each individual stitch, into every created square, and full circle into the completion of the pattern. Some quilts tell stories, some relay history, some give direction to the wayward and some point the direction to freedom. The editor of this collection sews together a wonderful array of memories, essays, short stories, lore, and historical accounts of quilts involved at every stage from a wide variety of writers. I highly recommend this collection to anyone interested in quilting and also to those of us who just enjoy reading a great book under the warmth of an old quilt. A heartwarming and inspiring collection of interesting facts, experiences, fiction, and heritage lays waiting in these pages. Wrap yourself up in your favorite old quilt, pour yourself a warm 'cup o' joe' and enjoy these intriguing and heartwarming stories in front of a simmering fire. You will love learning something new.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for any needlecrafting enthusiast.......2001-12-09

Aptly edited by Margaret Aldrich and featuring contributions by Alice Walker, Terry McMillan, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Whitney Otto, Patricia J. Cooper, and Norma Bradley Allen, The Old Quilt: A Heartwarming Celebration Of Quilts And Quilting Memories is a coffee-table sized anthology of stories and memoirs relating to quilts, quilt folklore, and history to intrigue quilters of all predilections. Lavish color photographs, artwork, quilt patterns, and even the occasional cartoon liven the tales with dazzling visual appeal. Wry stories and incredible illustrations make The Old Quilt truly a "must" for any needlecrafting enthusiast of quilts and quilting!

This book is a necessity for anyone who enjoys not only

Wilderness living in the late 1700s is captured and brought to life. Thirty-one paintings show how the rugged voyageurs of the North West Company worked and lived and laughed. This book was originally published in 1994 but has been unavailable for the past several years, until now.

    5 out of 5 stars A Visual History.......2001-08-31

This book should be in all school libraries. The excellent illustrations bring the accurate text to life in a compelling way. I give 2-3 hr presentations in French or English as a voyageur. This book certainly covers more than I can in such a way. I would recommend it whole-heartedly as background for anyone interested in the period and the characters.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read with Great Watercolors.......2000-12-03

Every spring in the late 1700's canoes would leave from Quebec and head for upper Lake Superior. At the same time trappers from deep in the central and Rocky Mountain regions of Canada would head for the same location with the fruits of their trapping labors over the winter. They would meet for a couple of weeks of trading and partying. Then they would laboriously paddle back to where they had come from.

Howard Silvertson captures this time with short clear descriptions and beautiful watercolors that really make the history come alive. It is a part of history that is often forgotten. It's fascinating to imagine what it was like to live in those times. This book captures the feeling. This book should be in every school library.

I don't know what I was expecting with Dutch cuisine when I tried some recipes from this book but it sure wasn't what came out in the final product! I was surprised to read about the Indian influence on Dutch food from Colonial times. I was also surprised to see the Dutch use meatballs in their stews.

I made the Vegetable soup with meatballs, following the recipe to the letter, and it came out absolutely mouth watering! For the main dish I selected Traditional Hotchpotch with Chuck and the meat fell off the bone. It turned out to be a stew but it was very tasty nonetheless.

The spiral-bound recipe books from many countries are loaded with authentic ethnic recipes along with historical notes that are worth the time to read. The history gives a great background to the excellent food you're about to prepare.

    Highly recommended.

It's been said that without Harold A. Innis there could have been no Marshall McLuhan. Empire and Communications is one of Innis's most important contributions to the debate about how media influence the development of consciousness and societies. In this seminal text, he traces humanity's movement from the oral tradition of preliterate cultures to the electronic media of recent times. Along the way, he presents his own influential concepts of oral communication, time and space bias, and monopolies of knowledge.

This book provides a wonderful examination of how emerging communication technologies impact the society that spawned them. Each major media advance (papyrus, parchment, paper, the printing press) causes major shifts in the social paradigms of the societies that adopt its use... definately worth the read. This edition has an afterword by Dr. David Godfrey regarding the impact of the electronic form.

    5 out of 5 stars 1redwingnut.......2007-01-30

Just bought my third golden retriever, and was STILL amazed at how much I enjoyed the absolutely beautiful photography in this book. My brother got it for my Father for Christmas, and I liked it so much I bought one for myself the next day. Amusing stories to read about different goldens, too, but I had not seen a golden retriever book with such a wonderful collection of pictures on almost every page before. Definitely a keeper!!

    3 out of 5 stars Light entertainment..........2006-09-01

This is a very light book with some very nice and "cute" photographs. Good for the coffeetable or bathroom.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-02-02

Love of Goldens has cute stories and some of the best golden photos that I've ever seen! The photos are absolutely beautiful and there's a TON of them!! It's worth it to buy this book even if only to look at the pictures.

    5 out of 5 stars i love goldies........2004-09-04

i think that if you like goldies and think they are so sweet, then buy this book!! it has stories about goldies, and it has the history of goldies, and such CUTE pictures. oh, by the way, i have a goldie myself, her name is "violet" she is the cutest, sweetest, smartest, most affectionate little doggy.

    5 out of 5 stars OMG! A Golden book!.......2003-03-13

Well, as the title tells you, this book is a goldne book, and a golden's book. This was the first item that i bought from amazon.com and it is the reason why I contunie on buying things. Basicly, it is one of the best books I own.
For the first thing, it includes first quality golden retriever photos, very cute! You witness the miracles of goldens throughout this book.
HOWEVER!, this book DOES NOT include how to take care of your beatiful golden. You may need another book to guide you and help you with the topics of health, training and history of golden retrievers.
I can call this book a "reference" book, it is really valuable and a must-own for both poeple who own goldens and who don't. If you like photography and animals, and art-- this book is for you.

      Book Description

When President Nixon signed the legislation authorizing the establishment of Voyageurs National Park on January 8, 1971, almost eighty years had passed since Minnesota's government initially petitioned to create a national park in the northern portion of the state.

Voyageurs National Park chronicles the complex legal and political campaign to found Minnesota's only national park. Witzig's thoroughly documented and referenced research allows him to offer a detailed view of the unanticipated disappointments and defining moments of achievement that accompanied this complicated legislative battle. Concentrating on the period from 1962 to 1975, Witzig identifies and explains the central issues surrounding the campaign including land acquisition policy, local concerns and opposition to the park, interagency conflict over inclusion of U.S. forest lands, antifederal attitudes in northeastern Minnesota, and the overstated case for the economic benefits a national park would bring. Witzig covers of the dispute over the inclusion of Crane Lake in the park and focuses on the many individuals and groups who were instrumental in the establishment of Voyageurs National Park, such as Governor Elmer L. Andersen, John A. Blatnik, Sigurd F. Olson, and Rita Shemesh.
