James Herriot's Dog Stories: Warm And Wonderful Stories About The Animals Herriot Loves Best
ASIN: 0312966202 |
Book Description
With each book more embraceable than the last, James Herriot once again brings us the magical beauty of Yorkshire through his heartwarming experiences as a country veterinarian. These new stories provide a grand finale to the wonderful books that began with all Creatures Great and Small.
It is just after World War II, and James has returned from the R.A.F. to do battle with the diseases and injuries that befall the farm animals and pets of Skeldale and the surrounding moors. Four-year-old Jimmy Herriot, Humphrey Cobb and his little beagle Myrtle, Norman the book-loving veterinary assistant, and many more new faces join old favorites among the green hills of Yorkshire, as James takes an unforgettable voyage to Russia on a freighter with 383 pedigreed sheep. Touching our hearts with laughter and wisdom, lifting our spirits with compassion and goodness, James Herriot never fails to delight.

I was verey satisfied with the whole process of ordering
on-line and I will continue buying books this way.
James Herriot.......2006-11-06
As an animal lover, if I were to be restricted to a single author on my bookshelves, it would be James Herriot, hands down. All four books by James Herriot, The English Country Veterinarian, comprise a collection of stories that remain unsurpassed in all animal literature.
Animal Magic Lives........2006-08-10
In this fourth edition you will have everything you are use to in a James Herriot book. Eccentric pet owners, nutty business partners, fun loving animals, and the author who reveals his heartfelt love and admiration for the animals he cares so deeply for. Only the souless few won't be touched by these humorous stories of animal and human interactions. Mr. Herriot shows just how much better the world is because of the animals who inhabit our daily lives.
I adored these charming stories..........2005-11-09
LOVED it. I've seen his books all over- bookstores, libraries, friends' houses, and yet I always resisted reading him. Why? I'm not sure. I didn't care for the cover (), and I usually REALLY hate stories about animals. A few years back, I read of a homeschooling family reading his work out loud, and when I came upon this book at a yard sale, I stuffed it in my sack to buy- I had an idea of my son and me reading it outloud in the distant future. I picked it up the other night because I was bored, needed something to read, and felt that I 'should' read this. After about two or three chapters, I was hooked. His stories are simple but charming, detailing the daily life of a country veterinarian. He was able to make me visualize riding along as his passenger as he drove from farm to farm, treating cows, pigs, sheep and domesticated pets. So many of his stories have funny endings. I really truly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the first one, "All Things Bright And Beautiful."

All creatures great & small + All things bright & beautiful.......2002-05-14
The seller sent me one book with first 2 stories in it. It was supposed to be four books. I accept that change without being asked. But the seller never sent the second book. I have emailed several times without any response at all. I will never buy from this seller again.
All Emotions Great and Small.......2000-02-22
Since I want to become a vet, I thought that this would be a great book to read. From the first sentence to the last I was enthralled. The words James Herriot uses in his books make you feel like you are standing right beside him when he is talking. This book will make you literally laugh out loud and also will make you cry. The story in this book is not one easily forgotten.
the best ever`.......2000-01-10
these books are the best i ever read. you can see the places described by herriot in your mind. i've read every book several times, and will read them all several more.
A book I remember years later..........1999-12-07
I had a dear aunt give me a copy of "All Things Great and Small" as a kid. I began to read it out of boredom as it was summer and school was out. I remember how each chapter was it's own story--some sad and some quite humorous and in my mind James Herriot allowed me a accompany him on each vetinarian visit. Trully a wonderful book series. Now as a parent I can see how this book might make for a great bed-time story book for children.
Great account of the life of an English country Vet!.......1999-11-17
I've read the whole series several times over, and it really brings to life images of English country farms. Cold frosty mornings, gruff country farmers, the rolling hills and dales of the countryside are all beautifully illustrated through Jame's Harriot's wonderful prose. It evokes thoughts of simpler times and whisks you away from the hustle and bustle of modern city life. A bonus if you love animals, but not necessary to enjoy these books!

good for child or pet loss.......2006-02-01
This book was a gift. It was given to me because my son passed away from a terminal genetic muscle defect 11 days after he was born.
The pictures are gorgeous!! I give the pictures 5 stars.
The story is cute and simple. I would recommend this book to be read to children who are dealing with the loss of a pet or the loss of a friend/sibling. It is also a charming book for an adult who has also suffered a loss.
A very helpful book!!.......2005-03-02
My niece died when my daughter was only 5. She struggled to come to terms with the concept of death, and to understand why her cousin had to die. Even more so, were her questions on what her cousin would do in Heaven. How would she live without her mommy and daddy? In our search to help her to understand a little better, a friend showed us this book. It was just the nudge she needed to move on, and accept that her cousin was not coming back, and was safe and well cared for in Heaven. Now, 3 years later, my daughter still loves this book. She now reads it to her new baby sister, and tells her all about their cousin in Heaven, and how she too, is taking caring of animals. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to deal with a loss.
Wonderful Book.......2003-12-22
A wonderful book! I give one to everyone I know who is struggling in dealing with this type of loss.
Excellent Book!!!!!!!!!.......2003-10-10
Incredible illustrations and wonderful story!! Bought it for my children as I loved the message and thought it would be good in the loss of a pet. Now I find myself in the position of supporting a friend's child as he prepares to die after a 5 yr. battle with cancer. NEVER thought I'd need it for that but was thrilled to find the main character's age (6 yrs old)is the same as this child. I know this book will help him on his journey!
Eases feelings at the loss of a pet.......2002-01-04
For anyone who loves animals and has experienced the loss of one, this story supports the emotional attachment and makes us feel the pet is in a great place. We hope for our pets to be taken care of without us, and this story sets just that stage.
The illustrations support the story and are beautiful in their own right. I have given this book to three friends with children who have lost family pets and all three felt it provided a kind word at that most difficult time.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2007-01-18
The book was a wonderful way of enforcing the love we feel toward the animals we live with and the love from God toward us all.
Rich and practical guide.......2006-09-02
A rich and practical guide to reflecting on our relationship with the creatures who share our households, All God's Creatures is well-grounded theologically. At the same time, Debra Farrington has provided a wealth of practices and prayers for allowing us to see these animal companions as sacramental signs of God's own work and mercy. She invites us--urges us--to move beyond romanticized notions of "having a pet" and calls us to see the inherently holy connections between people and the animals who share our lives.
I have already given this book to six other people, and have found it to be a needed resource.
If you love aniamls, you'll love this!.......2006-08-30
Reading this book has not only changed how we treat the cats and goldfish who share our home, it has changed the conversations in our house with and about our animal companions. When my six-year-old asked about getting a hamster, I told her it is a big decision to invite another animal into our home. I would never have begun the conversation this way before reading Debra Farrington's book.
This is a sound theological, practical and engaging examination of our relationship with the animals we invite into our homes, covering everything from naming to feeding to playing. The book also offers ways to be with aniamls who are sick or dying and includes rituals for burial. I'm planning on giving it to most everyone on my Christmas list!
Book Description
"Ask the animals" Job says, "and they will teach you; the birds of the air and they will tell you . . . who among you does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?"
From the humpback whale, who offers a glimpse into God's mystery, to the elephant, who models God's fiercely protective love and compassion, to the blackbird, who opens our eyes to the song of joy that sings through the cosmos, the animal kingdom is a treasure trove of images of our Creator.
In this beautifully illustrated collection of essays, readers will find surprising connections and much food for thought. Ask the Animals is a wonderful resource for private devotion or group study.
Product Description
Taffy and Tiffany came into their lives over a decade ago, and nothing has been the same since! These two little rascals have brought joy and delight into the lives Clair and his wife Brenda as only two lovable kitties could. As the years have gone by, this country preacher and his wife have learned valuable lessons and enjoyed many hours of hilarity watching the antics of their two little furballs as they lovingly call them. You'll chuckle and you'll be touched by their delightful stories, but above all you'll discover the significance of Clair's favorite verse, "Ask the animals and they will teach you" (Job 12:17)
Customer Reviews:
This is an Irritating Book!.......2006-09-19
I received this as a gift because I LOVE cats! I could only read so much. In the first 17 pages, the author has an "outside" cat that gives birth to 5 kittens, 2 of which get run over. Those 3 then have kittens of their own, bringing the total to 16 cats.
The author doesn't think about being a responsible pet owner and having them spayed or nuetered. One of the cats has a
hard time giving birth, and is weak and sick for days afterward. Does the owner take her to a vet? Of course not!
He leaves everything up to God. The writing is peppered with religious talk that makes me sick, because the owners won't even take care of their pets! I couldn't finish the book- it made me so angry.
Customer Reviews:
An Easy and Fun Read!!!!.......2006-04-03
I truely enjoyed reading this book. I just got a new puppy myself and can relate. Even though I do agree with the previous post of "buying" a dog instead of adopting one from a shelter, of which I did, I could honestly relate to her experiences. I also find the relations between "Dixie Lee" and Ms Phillips religious teachings to be interesting and enlightening. The book was easy to follow and one that was hard to put down, but once you did, you can pick it right back up and not loose your place. I laughed, had a tear and throughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of her series.
Good analogies and points to ponder.......2006-02-14
Ms. Phillips is wonderful at creating analogies between a dog's life and human's life and our relationship with God. She is very good at making points, both obvious and subtle. We definitely need to learn from our dogs - to enjoy the moment(s) and to take pleasure in the little things in life. The only thing I didn't like about this, and it's just my personal preferences, is that she "bought" Dixie. With over 11 million animals being euthanized every YEAR, I would have preferred if she would have went and adopted an animal from a shelter. As buying from a pet store only promotes demand, and thus the supplier must increase their "supply" thereby increasing the life of misery that those animals in "breeding" facilities must endure. I also didn't like the fact that because she couldn't housetrain her other dog, that she got rid of it...and the way she phrased it came across a little callous.

Ms. Wilson's book guides us step by step through the scriptures, highlighting God's love and concern for the animal kingdom along the way.
"All Creatures of Our God and King: What God's Word Says About Animals" offers us the blessed assurance that our pets who have passed away are indeed in the presence of a loving God, and that we will one day meet them all again in Heaven.
Buy this book, and please encourage your Church to also purchase Ms. Wilson's book! It would make an ideal study guide for either a Bible Study group or Sunday School Class. The Church does a very good job of teaching us about God's love for mankind; but, sadly, it is too-often silent regarding God's amazing love and concern for animals.

All are God's Creatures!.......2007-03-19
This book has come at a time when our world is very thirsty for Truth. Teri Wilson has done a magnificent job in showing how God has, indeed, created all creatures, great and small, through Scripture analogies.
This is a book that is easy to understand, but more so, it is succinct in it's pertinent message, that our beloved partners in the animal kingdom need our love more than ever ~ just as we need their love as well. Even for any readers with no formal religious background, this book will bring home the message to you that everything is indeed, created by God.
I guarantee after reading this book, you will truly believe that God has created all, and by that new found, or strengthened belief, you will begin to help heal the animal kingdom and help create respect and peace for all creatures of God.

Looks at bible passages from a naturalists point of view!.......1999-03-03
The books takes personal experiences of the author and relates them to passages of the bible about different animals. Tells how we should be wise like a snake, stay away from the lions of our lives, and fly with God on eagle's wings.
