1 out of 5 stars Not what it says.......2007-06-04

I was so thrilled to see a book on the topic by a Christian writer so I bought this book as soon as I saw it. Upon reading it though, I was quite disappointed. The author tells lots of stories but misses many opportunities. She never defines what the problem areas are. She never defines how to overcome them. She never notes how to avoid problems. Instead it is pretty much of a "hey, I have a great relationship with my mother- and daughter-in-law, but, honey, it's too tough so don't you expect to repeat whatever I did." This could have been a great book focusing on biblical stories and all, but she didn't accomplish it, even if it doesn't focus on mothers with married daughters.

5 out of 5 stars She wasn't the only one wrrong.......2007-05-27

I was looking for a book to show me that my mother-in-law was was wrong and I was right with our relationship. But it instead re-grounded me with the Biblical understanding of truths about our relationship. A wonderful book to read!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-05-08

I found the book to be very helpful for the mother of the groom. A lot of things to think about, but very imforative. I recommend this book with Christian perspective to any friend of mine.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Mother or Daughter-in-Law Relationship.......2007-02-19

Annie Chapman has an amazing way of being blunt, but still encouraging on a very delicate topic. This book offers so much advice for the typical blunders that women find themselves in. I feel that all mothers with sons and all daughters desiring to get married should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Non-Bashing Book!.......2007-01-20

This book has really helped me out a lot in my relationship with my Mother-in-Law. It makes both sides step back and really look at the situation and try to understand where the other person is coming from. It doesn't bash or put down either one. I would recommend it to every mother-in-law and daughter-in-law!

This handsome 10-anniversary edition of a minor classic presents the story of Heather, a preschooler with two moms who discovers that some of her friends have very different sorts of families. Juan, for example, has a mommy and a daddy and a big brother named Carlos. Miriam has a mommy and a baby sister. And Joshua has a mommy, a daddy, and a stepdaddy. Their teacher Molly encourages the children to draw pictures of their families, and reassures them that "each family is special" and that "the most important thing about a family is that all the people in it love each other." In the afterword, the author (whose other children's books include Matzo Ball Moon) explains that although she grew up in a Jewish home, in a Jewish neighborhood, there were no families like hers on the television or in picture books. She came to regard her family as somehow "wrong," since there was no Christmas tree in the living room and no Easter egg hunt. Whatever the religious right may wish to think about nontraditional families, there is no denying that any child enrolled in an American school will encounter friends with single parents, gay parents, stepparents, or adoptive parents. This new, revised version of Heather Has Two Mommies offers an enjoyable, upbeat, age-appropriate introduction to the idea of family diversity. The book is essential for children (ages 2 to 6) with gay parents or family members, and a great addition to a Rainbow Curriculum. --Regina Marler

Book Description

Originally self-published in 1989, Heather Has Two Mommies became the first title in Alyson's newly formed Alyson Wonderland imprint in 1990. The simple and straightforward story of a little girl named Heather and her two lesbian mothers was created by Newman and illustrator Diana Souza because children's books that reflected a nontraditional family did not exist, but a firestorm of controversy soon ensued. Attacked by the religious right, lambasted by Jesse Helms from the floor of the U.S Senate, and stolen from library shelves, it was an uphill battle for Heather. Thanks to the overwhelming support of booksellers, librarians, parents, and children, however, Heather Has Two Mommies has sold over 35,000 copies, launched a minor industry in providing books for the children of gay and lesbian parents and, as attested to by a recent New Yorker cartoon, become part of the cultural lexicon.

5 out of 5 stars Two Mommies.......2007-09-25

It is a good book. It would be nice if it had colours and was not only black and white but still one should definitely buy it. It is important to grow our children whether the parents are gay or not with the open mind that one needs to be a human being.

1 out of 5 stars Totally Awful.......2007-06-18

Hey, I'm a lesbian mom myself. I have two great kids. I was given this book as a gift. What a horrible book. Difficult to read, full of 1970s impossible to comprehend propaganda. Almost seems like the crazy right-wing wrote it, there is so much to object to. How on earth is artificial insemination a subject for kids, and if it was, surely there is a less textbook, more creative positive way to portray it?? Surely. At best, this book is an artifact of good intentions, and little more.

5 out of 5 stars A Lesbian Couple's Child.......2007-05-21

Family diversity is the subject of this children's book about a lesbian couple's daughter. This is a groundbreaking book in today's society.

3 out of 5 stars A bit dated and stereotypical - but still groundbreaking nevertheless.......2007-03-26

We are expecting a baby in July - that's the reason we bought the book to seek opportunities and prepare to speak/educate our child about our relationship. I found the book to be a bit general in how it tries to represent family types and maybe a bit more stereotypical in explaining the lesbian mothers' relationship. Nevertheless it is a good book to start a conversation.

3 out of 5 stars didn't realize they book was about a lesbian home.......2007-03-13

Well, let's see... I have a son that's growing up in a split home... and I'm remarried. I thought this book was more along those lines. I tend to be quite liberal in my beliefs, but felt this was just not appropriate for a highly encouragible child. I have put it in the top of the closet until he's more at an appropriate age... maybe 10 or 12. The book was written in a very good manner that does help to illustrate how everyone has different family structures. I just didn't find it as something I want to introduce to my son at this time. The book is good and from what I thought was a classic... just not for me.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Really Sweet Book.......2005-04-22

This book continues, along with An Adopted Woman, Twice Born and other titles the ever-thrilling story of a birth mother's reunion with the child she was forced to give up as an infant because she was unmarried and underage, usually from the 1940s, 1950s,or 1960s. Looking back on this practice it seems so cruel to both the mother and the child. I was wondering what becomes of these young pregnant girls today, and it hit me: abortion. How very sad in a totally different way. Society has its ways, often brutal when looked at from a distance, even a very short distance. Both ways of dealing with unexpected/unwanted pregnancies are obviously devastating to the mother, but at least adoption affords an opportunity to become acquainted with the child who was given up. In this story, the author has a rocky few years as we all do in one way or another, but always has the love of her children, and always has the hope of finding her baby. When she finally does, it is very exciting to read of the thrill the mother feels and of the slow awareness of the found child, now a grown woman who had never had any plan to seek out her birth mother. While being excited for Susan, the mother, my heart went out to Joanne whose entire life was instantly changed by this meeting. She was a married woman with a job, friends, and a loving family. Now, she was justifiably afraid of this woman entering her life, claiming to be her birth mother, who was pitting her entire happiness on Joanne's returning her love. Susan never quite goes over the line relative to stalking or smothering or demanding love, but she gets close. In any case, it is a very satisfying book and it is nice to read about such nice people who can have such a happy conclusion to a heart-breaking (for the mother) beginning.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for all members of the triad!.......2005-01-07

I just LOVED this book! I can't say enough about it. I am an adoptee and it was really great to hear a birthmother's perspective. She told an honest, heartwarming story that flowed well and was easy to read. I couldn't put this one down!!! Grab your box of tissue, warm blanket & enjoy!!! It was EXCELLENT!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Adoption Stories.......2004-07-09

I very much enjoyed reading this "fantastic" read! I have been in the adoption searching business for over 13 years now and this is one of THE best adoption search stories ever - not kidding. The way Susan expressed herself and that oof her family members shows such genuine love and affection, considering what she had to go through.

5 out of 5 stars From the Other Side.......2004-07-08

I attended High School with Susan Mello Souza but we were never friends. I knew who she was, but always considered her to be one of the "popular" girls and she always seemed to just be bursting with confidence... little did I know. I reconnected with Susan just this past year as I was surfing the net doing genealogy ... our last names were the same and that is how it came to be that I found a former classmate. After I read about the loss of her daughter, Jackie online and the story of her being pregnant in High School and giving that daughter up I contacted her via e-mail. She was very gracious and we e-mailed back and forth several times and I ordered a copy of her book.
The story is very well written and for me personally it showed me the "other side" of the adoption story. You see, while Susan was struggling with giving a baby up I had my own personal struggle. My parents were getting a divorce and I decided to give up my Dad and allow a step-father to adopt me. Like Susan this decision would haunt me for many years.
I thank God that I too had the chutzpah to correct a decision that was in may ways made for me and I was reunited with my Dad.
After reading Susan's book I came to realize how much pain I had inflicted on my own Dad.
Susan lost not one but two daughters in her life and you feel her pain, but also know that hope is what carried her through the dark days. This book I believe will inspire not only those birth mothers still looking for their child, but also those who may have given up on people that loved them.

5 out of 5 stars Helped the healing process.......2004-06-11

When reading Susans and Joannes book...It brought me to a place I once was. As I shared Susan's life, her love, loss, reunion. I felt as though I was there. Sharing, hurting, caring. It really IS a MUST read. Whether you are a part of the adoption community or not. If you are...it helps the healing process. If you are not..you will learn we are not horrible. Just loving mothers searching for our lost children.

3 out of 5 stars It wasn't the best........2005-02-25

I think this book was poorly written. It made Sunny seem selfish and stupid. She was incredibly rude to Dawn. Also, she was treating Dawn's house like her private hotel. Also, she acted terrrible to her mom. She could have been there for her mom, knowing she had cancer. Another thing is, Sunny had so many boyfriends in this 1 book and she only cared about what they looked like. Not there personality. All in all, this book was pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars SUNNY WINSLOW *** SELFISH BOY-CRAZY LUNATIC *** .......2004-12-27

Sunny is a selfish, boy-crazed lunatic who doesn't realise that DAWN and MRS. WINSLOW and MR. WINSLOW NEED Sunny to HELP them. SURE she DOES have her OWN PROBLEMS, that's fine, but DON"t MESS EVERYBODY else UP, Sunny, and expect everyone to FORGIVE and FORGET the way Carol, Mrs. Bruen, and Dawn's dad did about the stew pot that YOU LEFT UNATTENDED while CAROL and an unborn BABY were in the house. SUNNY IS SELFISH, STUBBORN and CONCEITED. she doesn't realise that in this time of heartbreak and upset (her mother's illness) she is NOT the only person SUFFERING. Everyone NEEDS to PULL together and SUNNY IS NOT HELPING THIS by running away with loner 17-year olds and nearly burning people's houses down!
DAWN IS THE GREATEST FRIEND< a person always there to help. I can see why she doesn't understand SUnny - sunny is so oneminded and stubborn. Dawn is just TRYING to HELP sunny and bring her back to sanity, but SUNNY PUSHES EVERYONE AWAY aND is that DAwn's fault, i think not!

5 out of 5 stars Sunny and Dawn - A Friendship Detiorating By The Day.......2004-12-27

Sunny #6 was a good book; it was the book in which the fight between Dawn and Sunny REALLY begins; it showed both sides of Dawn and Sunny's personalities; good and bad.
Sunny is a troubled teen dealing with the fact that she may lose her mother to cancer; she has a lot of anger, pain, and sadness to deal with. She, unfortunately, solves her problems by, as Dawn pointed out, running away; and this isn't the greatest thing to do; although one aspect of it is good; you learn from your mistakes and work on solving your problems in a different way; so truly; Sunny is experimenting with how to deal with her pain and grief. This is what Dawn, Sunny's long-time best friend; doesn't see. She sees Sunny as being stubborn, selfish, a changed person; and a person who doesn't visit her mother at all.

I would just like to point out here that Ann M Martin; the author, has done a fantastic job of making us feel sympathetic towards Sunny in this book; so much, that by the next book, Dawn #7, we feel resentful towards Dawn. Great work, Ms Martin!

Anyway, back to the Dawn and Sunny Saga : Dawn is also experiencing grief, she has a close friend and 'second mother'in Mrs Winslow (Sunny's mother), and is just as saddened by Mrs. Winslow's illness as Sunny is. Dawn is also experiencing confusion as her stepmother, Carol, is carrying her father's baby. One interesting thing is this; Dawn visits Mrs. Winslow more often than Sunny does, but Sunny gets on a LOT better than Dawn with Carol. It's almost as if they had switched mothers; and this adds to the tension and rivalry between the two girls.

I think that there are a lot of aspects to this fight; really, i don't side with either Dawn or Sunny; i just try to understand their problems and what they're feeling; the way Ducky does with Sunny.

However, i do believe that Dawn could be more understanding; she could see that Sunny doesn't know how to act because of the situation she's in; Dawn could try to understand Sunny better and empathize, not criticise. Dawn doesn't seem to realise that when people are faced with a tough problem/situation, they don't always know how they'll act; after all, when it boils down to it, this is SUNNY's mother and SUNNY has the bigger problem; her mother is dying. And Dawn may feel equally saddened by this but; she has Carol and her mother in Stoneybrook. So Dawn doesn't TRULY know how Sunny feels...she just THINKS she does.

Sunny, in turn; could also be less stubborn; she definitely let her guard down when she went out to flirt with that guy, putting Carol and her unborn baby in danger, by leaving the stew pot unattended; Sunny was definitely pretty selfish when she did this; but one thing has come of it, Sunny realises her mistakes and apologises. But i do feel Dawn's confusion that Sunny, Mrs. Bruen, Dad and Carol are all sitting around having a friendly chat just hours after Sunny made that tremendous mistake; while Sunny seems to be 'off the hook'. I can also understand Dawn's annoyance that when Sunny makes a mistake, everyone blames it on the turmoil caused by her mother's illness; again, Sunny off the hook...

I do think that Sunny needs to see what a great friend she has in Ducky; after all, he always listens and understands and doesn't judge her by her actions. He's a terrific friend, but Sunny needs to be a good friend back to him. In the book, an example of this was when Ducky was majorly upset about his depressed friend Alex, and Sunny listened for about half a second, cut Ducky off, and started chatting about her upcoming date with another guy. She asks Ducky's fashion advice in the middle of Ducky explaining a serious problem! The ONE time Ducky needs desperate help, and asks Sunny for it, she won't listen. I have to admit that when you don't help a great buddy like Ducky, that's pretty low...

However, Dawn comes across as a patron saint, as Sunny describes; Dawn blocks Sunny's view of Mrs. Winslow and starts spouting 'lies' (as Sunny thinks), "You're looking so GREAT today, Mrs. Winslow, what can i do for you, Mrs. Winslow? Today's such a pretty day, you're looking better than ever, Mrs. Winslow! Come on, Sunny, let's get your mom some food, call the nurse, give her flowers..." I can definitely see how this could REALLY get on Sunny's nerves.

So as you can see there are two very different sides to this fight...keep reading all of the California Diaries to see how it goes! And, oh; by the way, Sunny Diary Two #6, 'Waiting. Watching. Crash." is a great book, definitely worth buying, and an important milestone in the Dawn and Sunny Fight: you can't miss it!

4 out of 5 stars So-So.......2004-12-09

I liked this book well enough. I think Sunny was truly unfair to her mom. I would have stuck right by my moms side. I can see why Dawn got mad at Sunny. She is incredibly selfish and VERY boy-crazy. I liked the other California Diaries a lot better. Thats why i gave it 4 stars. P.S. Maggie is my favorite character.

4 out of 5 stars mother and two daughters.......2005-11-06

Mother and Two Daughters - After the death of their father, Cate, a woman with a crusading streak, and
and her more conventional sister Lydia must learn to come to terms with their differences. The three main characters: Cate, newly divorced Lydia, and their mother Nell are well-drawn and three dimensional. While Cate deals with the possible loss of her teaching job and a new boyfriend, Lydia faces life as a single woman; she goes back to college and gets a job. Well written and intriguing, though the last chapter felt too calculated.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat interesting, but I don't miss the characters........2004-06-10

I read a review before I read the book. The reviewer claimed to actually miss the characters after reading the book. I enjoyed the book, that is, I finished it. But I don't think the characters were so complex--I thought they were predictable (and somewhat obnoxious). I also found the "wrapping up" of issues boring and over calculated at the end. This is my first Gail Godwin book, so I might try another. If it is the same, I probably won't read another.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2002-11-22

I don't understand the 1 star either. This is one of my favorite books of all time. You come to really care about the characters. The mother 'not true to herself'? I don't understand that at all. Self-sacrificing maybe .... in a way many mothers are. All in all, I've got nothing but good things to say.

5 out of 5 stars A rich, rewarding read.......2000-11-17

While I was browsing through Amazon's Gail Godwin titles, I was shocked to see a "one star" Avg. Customer Rating for A Mother and Two Daughters....

It's probably been 15 years since I read this novel, but I remember being swept away by the story of these three strong, complex, and very interesting women. I am contributing my "five star" review in the hopes that potential readers will not bypass this compelling, richly textured book.

1 out of 5 stars Not much here to carry with you.......2000-01-16

One of the things I enjoy about reading is that I can take something from a book and carry it with me....some insight or food for thought. This book has nothing to savor in it's story. I don't like the Mother, who is never true to herself. I really disliked the older daughter character, she needs to grow-up and since she is 40 I doubt she ever will. The younger daughter held the story for a while, but she falls into the TV business without any prior talent...unbelievable at best. Morality is passe throughout and so is this book, folks.

Does Grilled Butterflied Chicken with Provençal Herbs sound quintessentially Jewish to you? What about Slow-Cooked Chicken on a Bed of Potatoes? The mother-daughter team of Mother and Daughter Jewish Cooking list the first recipe as "contemporary" and the second recipe as "traditional." Such is the organizing principle on which the entire book is based: we are Jewish women cooking, therefore this is Jewish cooking. The premise doesn't quite hold together at the seams. The book is divided by soups, appetizers, dairy dishes, eggs, tarts, pasta, fish, poultry, beef and lamb, vegetables, salads, rice and grains, desserts, and menus. There's even a glossary of Yiddish and Hebrew terms. You will find both chicken and matzo ball soup. But you will also find a tasty-sounding Oriental Chicken Soup as well as Sephardi Cheese Puffs, Turkish Mushrooms, Aunty Mary's Savory Noodles, Moroccan Beef Casserole, Greek-Jewish Red Wine Beef Casserole, Viennese Red Cabbage, Doris's German Cucumber Salad, and Healthy Somerset Apple Coffee Cake.

"This book," Evelyn Rose says, "is an attempt to preserve the food legacy handed down by all our mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers, but to modify it to suit the lives we live now, and to introduce other dishes that are imbued with the same spirit yet are looking toward the future." So Mother and Daughter Jewish Cooking is more like two generations of women (Judy is the daughter) sharing traditional and contemporary recipes, in a kind of a mother-daughter coffee klatsch. Rose, who lives in Manchester, England, and broadcasts on the BBC, is a world authority on Jewish food. Her classic The New Complete International Jewish Cookbook is like The Joy of Cooking for the Anglo-Jewish home. That's a lot of muscle. Not enough of it is flexed in this collection. --Schuyler Ingle

Book Description

"In this book we are seeking the best of both worlds--the remembrance of tastes past and the thrill of the new. What matters in this updating of the classics and the culling of new ideas from communities around us is that we adapt and integrate them in the spirit of Jewish history, making them our own as our ancestors have always done. In doing so we continue a tradition that began more than five thousand years ago."
--from the Introduction

Two generations of Jewish women, mother and daughter, have come together to create this wonderful collection of recipes for cooks young and old. The mother, Evelyn Rose, offers traditional Jewish recipes, just the way your mother and grandmother used to make them. For more contemporary, bolder, and lighter tastes, her daughter, Judi, offers updated and all-new dishes.

For example, the chapters on soups, starters, and salads include a recipe for traditional Chopped Liver (though it's made with less fat), as well as Chicken Liver Pate with Pears and a Citrus and Red Currant Sauce, a totally contemporary hors d'oeuvre made with a fruit citrus-scented sauce. Try the beautiful, ruby-colored Traditional Beet Borscht for that old-world taste, or you might enjoy the satisfying and sophisticated Cream of Watercress Soup with a Toasted Walnut Garnish, which can be served hot or chilled.

For the Kosher home, there are plenty of recipes for dairy meals, such as a traditional Onion Tarte from Alsace, or the exquisite and aromatic Provençal Sun-dried Tomato, Olive, and Basil Tarte. Many of the pasta dishes can be adapted to dairy or meat meals, such as Auntie Mary's Savory Noodles and Noodles in Sesame Sauce, Hong Kong Style, both of which can be prepared with chicken or vegetable stock.

There's a bounty of meat recipes as well, from universal Eastern European favorites like Beef-Filled Cabbage Leaves in a Sweet-and-Sour Sauce to South African Curried Beef Gratin, a spiced and slightly sweet example of how much fun you can have with Kosher cooking. Succulent Roast Chicken with a Lemon and Herb Stuffing is comfort food at its best, and Chicken and Mushroom Puff is a delicious way to use up leftover chicken and gravy, or even leftover Thanksgiving turkey.

If it sounds like there are too many delicious recipes to choose from, Judi and Evelyn have included menus for every holiday -- Passover, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Hanukkah, and more. For each Jewish holiday, there is a discussion of the traditions and their cultural significance, such as why, during Purim, we eat all kinds of baked and fried sweet things using chickpeas, poppy or sesame seeds (to represent golden coins), and triangular pastries (Haman's pockets).

Finish your meal with desserts like Armenian Apricot Mousse with Pistachios, Auntie Annie's Cinnamon Balls, or Great Grandma's Feather-Light Lemon Cookies, and start creating a few traditions of your own. Cooking is as much about family and friends as it is about good food, and that's just the spirit conveyed here.

Whether you've been trying to remember the recipe for a favorite dish from your childhood or you want to keep a Kosher kitchen but are looking for some exciting new flavors, this is the book for you.

Jewish people of all ages are returning to their roots and craving the long-lost recipes of generations past. What Jewish person doesn't remember his or her grandmother's special recipe for matzoh ball soup or his or her aunt's recipe for brisket, and want to share those comforting recipes with the family? And what Jewish cook wouldn't want to expand their repertoire with some fresher, lighter, more contemporary versions of their favorite family recipes?

Mother and Daughter Jewish Cooking offers recipes that embrace traditional Jewish cooking as well as innovations and world cuisines. Evelyn Rose, the mother, relates classic Jewish recipes, prepared the old-fashioned way and perfect for holidays and special occasions or those sentimental moods. Feeling more adventurous? Evelyn's daughter, Judi, offers updated classics and all new Jewish-style recipes that incorporate a wide range of flavors.

Mother and Daughter Jewish Cooking is a book that can be shared across the generations. It is a perfect gift for friends and family at holiday times as well as an everyday cookbook, reached for night after night.Jewish people of all ages are returning to their roots and craving the long-lost recipes of generations past. 2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing........2003-11-12

I really looked forward to this book, since the recipes I had encountered from Evelyn Rose all seemed delicious. What a disappointment this book has turned out to be. I found most of the recipes to be labor-intensive, overly rich, and not very appealing. In the back of the book are some menu suggestions that are helpful, but I'm baffled as to why some holidays have extensive suggestions, while others are completely neglected. This is not a cookbook for someone who wants to create elegant meals that allow you to actually enjoy your guests and the holiday at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars A cookbook packed with innovation and new ideas!.......2000-04-06

Mother & Daughter Jewish Cooking contrasts the different cooking methods and experiences of a mother/daughter team: while mother Evelyn strives to preserve Jewish traditional recipes, adapting them to the healthier diet of today; daughter Judi uses modern ingredients and international influences to spice the results. The result's a cookbook packed with innovation and new ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Passing down recipes and kitchen secrets.......2000-02-24

Jewish women have been cooking and handing down their recipes since Rivka cooked a savory dish with which Jacob tricked Isaac. Evelyn Rose is the food editor for the UK Jewish Chronicle and author of the cookbook nearly every Jewish home owns: The New Complete International Jewish Cookbook. Her daughter, Judi, who lives in NYC, is a producer for the BBC and is currently preparing a series on Thai cooking. Mother passes traditions and tips and lore onto daughter in this book. In addition to recipes and tips (tips on frying onions, soaking beans, chopping, preparing rice, and baking skills), folktales are also passed down to the new generation, such as how it took Evelyn ten years to coax the Rose family pickle recipe out of her husband. The Roses also include some holiday menus at the back of the book which makes it easier for you to add their recipes to your holiday presentations. For each classic Jewish recipe, the authors also present updated hybrids. For example, recipes include classic chicken soup, followed by a contemporary szechuan chicken soup with soy, ginger, or lemongrass. Hungarian Goulash soup is followed by a Spanish red pepper soup. A traditional Jewish lentil soup is paired with a Cream of Watercress; chopped chicken liver is followed by liver pate with pears and a citrus and red currant sauce; or maybe you'd prefer a vegetarian mock-liver zucchini pate. Traditional Sephardic cheese puffs are followed by contemporary French petites gougeres. A traditional Tunisian baked omelet (badinjan kuku) is followed by Israeli cream cheese pancakes. The Roses provide a recipe for a lokshen kugel that can be made with wheat and egg free asian noodles (did you know that lakcha means noodles in Turkish?), as well as an excellent recipe for a traditional Anglo-Jewish halibut in lemon sauce, and a kosher Valencian seafood-free paella. Gefilte fish is hybridized with Gefilte Fish Provencale, Marmite due Pecheur, and Normandy style fish with cider and apples. There are a dozen chicken dishes, including a lemon chicken; an orange, raisin, and honey chicken; and spice roasted chicken with apricot and bulgher stuffing. As for salad recipes; to name a few, there is Moroccan carrot-raisin; fennel, almond and black grape; Manchester style potato; cucumber; and melon, cucumber and strawberry. The desserts are to die for, need I say more? Okay, let me mention three: A traditional Queen of Sheba Flourless Chocolate Gajeau, a contemporary Viennese Apfelschnitten, and a classic Jewish Apple Pie. A very good resource for the Jewish and non-jewish cook.

Book Description

The Today Show, June 24, 1956. June Meyer tells David Garroway that she is looking forward to “the adventure of a lifetime” as she and her friend Teri Foster leave New York City on a pair of three-speed Schwinns. Neither has any bicycle touring experience, but they want to get to California and see as much of the country as possible along the way. Ninety days later, their adventure concludes in Los Angeles.

Forty years later, June's daughter and son-in-law stand before a nationwide audience, explaining to Bryant Gumbel that they plan to follow the same route on their modern 24-speed Schwinns, undertaking their own adventure of a lifetime.

The Adventure of Two Lifetimes fuses the story of Peggy and Brian Goetz with the tale of Peggy's mother, June, who keeps in touch during the trip, reconstructing her 1956 journey from her journal and scrapbook. The Adventure of Two Lifetimes compares and contrasts America of the 1950s with America in the late 1990s; towns that were booming during June's trip are now shells of their former selves, stripped by big-box stores and interstates. Friendly strangers opened their doors to the weary cyclists in both eras, but June's idealistic naivete—which results in a horrific assault and near-rape—is matched by Peggy and Brian's careful cynicism.

This is not so much a travelogue—of daily mileages and linear directions—as it is a memoir of time, of places, of a mother and a daughter. It's a book about how one woman's courage and quest for a place in the world forever changed her life, and how her daughter emerged from the shadow of that feat to find her own place in the world, together with her husband. And finally, it's a book about America and Americans, in two very different generations.

1 out of 5 stars Did This Really Happen?.......2002-05-10

I hated this book. I admit I didn't finish it, but what I read was dreadful. These people seem to be so impressed with themselves, you'd think no one but them had ever cycled across the country. I'm somewhat upset that I have to give the book one star, because there doesn't seem to be a 'no star' rating.

5 out of 5 stars Part travelogue, part memoir, and all excitement.......2002-04-10

The Adventure Of Two Lifetimes by Peggy Newland Goetz and Brian Goetz, with June Meyer Newland, is part travelogue, part memoir, and all excitement as it tells of an American husband and wife who embarked on a bicycle tour from New York to California. The Adventure Of Two Lifetimes also transcends generations, viewing the great journey through the eyes of mother and daughter and son-in-law. An exciting, fascinating, and unique look at America from the point of view of highly dedicated and exuberant people, The Adventure Of Two Lifetimes is rewarding, enjoyable, thoughtful, and occasionally inspiring reading!

5 out of 5 stars This is a must read!!!!.......2001-06-12

This is not the type of book I normally read. It arrived in the mail and I had a hard time putting it down. Life passes us by all too quickly. This shows us to stop and smell the roses. Brian is my cousin. They stopped at our house on the trip through Nebraska. They were tired but happy. I hadn't seen Brian for years since life took us to different parts of the country. We had a wonderful but all too short visit. Any time I hear about someone taking a long bike trip I have to tell them about this adventure. Now I have a book to recommend. It's great!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2001-06-11

I enjoyed this story immensely. Peggy's descriptions made me want to get out and really SEE these places, minus the Winnebago of course. Sweat Boy, nice job and good info on the "gadget" aspect! Enough to give me some understanding without causing my eyes to glaze. Alternating the writing between the two authors, together with the infusion of June's writings, made the book an easy read. And June, what a character! She reminds me of Steinbeck's Mary Talbot from Cannery Row.

5 out of 5 stars The true Joy of Bicycling.......2001-06-02

A true picture of how traveling by bike can focus on the scenery not the speed. 40 years of contrast in highways, stores, accommodations, but little change with people wanting to help. Not only should we take time to "smell the roses" but we should enjoy the poeple of this country. What will the next generation depict of our country's scenery/pollution, roads/superhighways, and people? Will fear of assault, roads blocked to bicycles, hotels unwilling to take in exhausted travelers, prevent future bicycle travel? Let's hope not. This kind of adventure should always be available.

5 out of 5 stars Another "must read.".......2005-05-20

Precious Things, the third book in the "Faded Photographs" series, continues the common thread brought forth in both Broken Things and Hidden Things, the two previous titles in Andrea Boeshaar's superior series.

Blythe Severson has immersed herself in the present, attempting to escape the mistakes of the past. And she believes she has succeeded...until one of those "mistakes" shows up at her front door. After giving up her baby due to her own perceived inability to care for it, Blythe faces going through her entire life with empty arms.

Kylie Rollins has been buffeted by crisis after crisis: the death of her mother, a broken engagement, and the realization that the woman she had called Mom all these years, might not have been her real mother at all. Discovering that Blythe Severson is her biological mother, Kylie longs for a relationship with the woman. A relationship which she hopes will fill her empty heart.

The two women come together, each possessing their own unique need. After all these years, will Kylie's heart be able to fill her mother's empty arms? And will Blythe's arms be enough to comfort her daughter's hurting heart?

The two previous titles in Andrea Boeshaar's "Faded Photographs" series raised the bar for Christian fiction and Precious Things leaps the hurdle with ease. Another "must read."

    4 out of 5 stars Great read........2004-07-14

Blythe is brought face to face with the fall-out of decisions and vows made in her youth. When the young man she'd loved was killed, she was persuaded it was best to give up their baby for adoption. Okay, so now she's mature, faith has sustained her over many years of heartache, she has a successful antique business, but her heart still yearns for the daughter now seeking a relationship with her biological mother. The decisions Blythe has to make now will again have far reaching effects on several people. Is she prepared to lose her business, the man she is learning to love or continue to be estranged from the daughter she has always loved?
The struggles of mother and daughter and the men who love them reached deep into my own heart. The way Andrea Boeshaar shows the truth and relevance of Scripture for today's problems warms and delights. Her excellent portrayal of real people in real struggles to find and obey God's ways must be a challenge to any reader searching for answers to life's questions of faith, love and forgiveness.
This book is a keeper, one to read over and over!

5 out of 5 stars Stay up late to read this one...!.......2004-07-03

I never read the first two books, I admit it, but these characters pulled me in. I stayed up 'til nearly 1:00 a.m. reading one evening. (yawn) But I wasn't disappointed. Through the characters, I saw examples of forgiveness in action--and how we must learn to forgive, which isn't always an instant occurrence. I cheered for Blythe and even cried a couple tears for her situation. Thanks for a great story! Now to get the first 2 books...

5 out of 5 stars You can't run from your past forever..........2004-07-01

Boeshaar has outdone herself in Precious Things. She flawlessly mixes the past with the present in a story that deals with tough issues such as Forgiveness, a Hidden Past, Rekindling Friendships, and of course, Romance!
The twist at the end really threw me. A terrific read that you won't be able to put down until you finish!
You HAVE to get this one!

5 out of 5 stars Filling the Emptiness.......2004-06-27

Blythe is a former hippie who gave up her baby daughter, Kylie, after the sudden and tragic death of her boyfriend Rob. Kylie is adopted by Blythe's close friend Wendy, who is sworn to secrecy. Many years later, Kylie recieves a faded photograph and begins to piece together her past, which includes contacting Blythe for answers.

Ms. Boeshaar weaves the past with the present wonderfully, giving us a glimpse into Blythe's colorful past as well as her outlook for the future. The tagline for this book is "A mother's empty arms and a daughter's empty heart," as the story proceeds it shows us how God's love made both full again. His love and forgiveness are never far away.

This novel is very true-to-life, which I enjoy in Christian fiction. It shows that many Christians have less-than-perfect pasts and how their faith changes all of that. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone who is a mother, or a daughter.
