Book Description
This book has a threefold purpose: first, it is an interesting romance. Second, it teaches a moral lesson and proves the natural laws laid down in the Bible. Third, it shows the value of science, foreknowledge and preparedness. This work is mysterious and contains a valuable secret, clothed in veiled language. Some will find it the first time they read it, others will see it in the second reading, but the greatest number will find the hidden secret when they read it the third time.

a book that opened my eyes.......2007-01-12
It's been four years now, that I wanted to have this book ! The first time I heard about Gann. I learned technical analisys, and the teacher mentioned Gann at the end of the course., only roughly, and left me with lots of question marks. I repeated the course, only to hear more about Gann, but the second time, he even said less. He only mentioned that there was a man, named william Gann, who had a " different way " to trade and the legend says he made millions. Well the millions of 1980 are not the ones nowadays, but still.. He said all is written in this book, and who wants to understand gann should read the book.
When finally I bought it, I read it in two days, and NOW, I understand so much more !
the book is not a novel, not fiction. he uses short, and matter of fact sentences. But for those who want to look " beyond" is a MUST ! .
Beware of superbookdeals seller.......2006-06-19
Buy this book by all means, but not from superbookdeals - they don't

Don't waste your time!.......2004-06-15
Gann was a good trader and self-promoter but was a lousy writer! He was supposed to have had a mystical key which unlocked the future movements of the markets. He never disclosed the mechanics of this key to his students, associates, or family members. Some of his forecasts were astounding while others were simply asinine. There is supposed to be a secret of market prognostication hidden in this book which might become apparent after the third reading. However, it is not likely that any but the most determined reader could get through this literary equivalent of a trip to the dentist's office more than once.
Much of Gann's reputation came from an article that Richard D. Wyckoff wrote in 1909 describing Gann's trading skills. However, it should be noted that Wyckoff wrote twenty years after this article that the greatest trader he had ever known was Jesse Livermore - not W. D. Gann! (Furthermore, Gann was not included in Wyckoff's top three traders!) I have known several Gann-type traders over the years but, aside from their hype, have never witnessed any great market foresight coming from these practitioners. In my observation, the most successful Gann-type traders appear to be trend-followers.
I have found that it is dangerous to bring preconceptions to the market place. The market is neither right nor wrong - it just IS! Preconceptions cause one to try to catch swing tops and bottoms. This is a hazardous, often financially-fatal practice. It is much safer to go with the flow. Trade with what you are experiencing - not because your forecast indicates that SPX should be trading at 1100 at 10:00AM on September 3.
Far different from what I expected. A "Bible Code" book.......2003-04-02
This is the first Gann book I ever read. I expected it to be some kind of trading book that taught me about how one of the most famous traders of the last century developed and applied his technique like the Gann Line in the market, or something close to Reminiscences of a Stock Operator. However, this is a fiction of how somebody picking sentences here and there from the Bible, making propheses and earning bucks of gold in commodities markets.
I have been a Baptist for half of my life and I study Bible intensely. I certainly would appreciate other traders to turn to Christ as their personal Savior. I just dont buy into that "Bible Code" type of stuff and take the Bible as a means of fortune telling for money making.
Still I will read other Gann books in the future. However, I just cant recommend this as a trading book to anyone at all.
Esoteric Masterpiece on Market Behaviour.......2003-02-07
There are certain literary endeavours which have several layers of meaning imbedded in them. This profound book is a very valuable key to economic independence. It requires patience and hard work and probably a life devotion to unwinding its esoteric meaning. Do not expect to read this once and obtain an understanding of what it means. This book requires a good deal of background in esoteric matters such as Astrology and Kabbalism; it also requires diligence because every line must be combed for veiled meanings. There is no quick scheme for riches here. If you enjoy learning, exploring and growing this book will reward you. If you are looking for a get rich quick thing I don't think you will appreciate this work. To the discerning reader, I would suggest that once you have attained Mastery of all this, the irony is that the obtention of the riches becomes almost irrelevant, since you have obtained a wealth that far exceeds that of the mundane world!

Poetics in Architecture (Architectural Design)
ASIN: 0470842288 |
Book Description
In architecture, looking back is a rerequisite to looking forward. Inspired and competent design has to be informed by a knowledge and understanding of earlier design and technology. For no one is this truism more applicable than Jan Kaplicky of Future Systems. Future Systems is well known for its futuristic work, including the highly acclaimed Media Centre at Lord's, as well as the soon-to-be-built Selfridges department store in Birmingham. It is Kaplicky's delight and enthusiasm for 20th-century design and architecture, which have helped feed his appetite for innovative design solutions and exploring new technologies. In Looking Back in Envy, Kaplicky invites ten key architects, artists, designers and engineers of our time to choose their favourite work of the previous century. Contributors include Ron Arad, Peter Cook,Tony Hunt,Zaha Hadid and Anish Kapoor.
Book Description
This culinary trend-setter has taken a look back over his more than three decades as a Cajun cook to select some of his favorite recipes. These recipes serve to illustrate not just the development of his personal cooking style, but also that of the Cajun cuisine that he helped to pioneer.
Wilson's commentaries and remembrances complement his recipes in a prosaic style that is as well known, and as unique, as the recipes themselves. Pictures of his friends and family who played integral roles in the development of his culinary techniques accompany the text of this cookbook, which is "garonteed" to help the cook "pass a good time" in the kitchen.
Justin Wilson is internationally known as a Cajun cook and humorist. He is a veteran of both writing cookbooks and preparing his dishes on his public broadcasting television programs for people across the country to enjoy. The companion television series to Justin Wilson Looking Back: A Cajun Cookbook is currently under production for the Public Broadcasting System.

this book is great to read all Justin Wilson's little stories
it has the best recipes of course
You'll like it, I gare-on-tee.......2001-11-19
First of all, I can't believe another reviewer knocked this book because it contained previously released recipes; the name of the book is "Looking Back"!!!!!!
Now that I have that off my chest, I love this cookbook. Justin Wilson knows true, authentic cajun cooking (he's native to the area and from the old school). Looking through this cookbook (there are many pictures), I had a certain feel of nostalgia for a different era. The recipes included accentuate this feeling. The stories and antecdotes also contibute to this feeling of yesteryear. My earliest memories are of me and my Dad watching Justin on Saturday afternoons and this cookbook brings back alot of memories (I really hate to just call this a cookbook as it is much more than that). The recipes are very easy to follow and the results are delictable and authentic. For anyone who has ever seen Justin on PBS, you will love this cookbook. For anyone who has no idea who Justin Wison is, this cookbook will give you some great insight into true cajun and creole cooking, from a man who spent his entire life enjoying it.(Justin was cajun when cajun wasn't cool.) I can not emphasize enouph how important it is to appreciate this cookbook for what it is. Justin wasn't some high profile chef, who moved to an area he wasn't from, trying to capitalize on an already popular form of cooking. The recipes are from cooking methods that were passed down to him, and many of them came out of survival more than anything else. Justin Wilson is an icon and this book will make you feel like you knew him.
Justin Wilson.......2001-09-22
If you know or have seen Justin on PBS, then this book is Justin. Its great, the pictures are worth the price. It truly a shame that he died only a few days ago.

Book Description
First, this book examines and reflects upon the Language Experience Approach (LEA) as an educational approach, reviewing its history and offering different perspectives. Second, it provides practical classroom applications for early childhood, primary, and middle school teachers and learners. Finally, the book helps to understand the purposes of language experience and how far one may take the process. Classroom teachers and reading specialists describe strategies in use in a variety of classroom settings and describe ways to integrate current assessment techniques with LEA.
The book is divided into five major sections. In the first section, the authors conceptualize language experience and examine its historical evolution. In the second and third sections, the authors provide practical classroom applications for early childhood, primary, and middle school teachers and learners. Some examples include a scrapbook project, the use of nursery rhymes, the writing and telling of family folklore stories, and methods through which to develop a voice through writing. In the fourth section, the authors explore sensible language experience processes and scenarios that meet the needs of special learners (ESL, bilingual, learning disabled). In the final section, the authors examine the big picture of education, consider the perpetually swinging pendulum of approaches, and provide insight into language experience as an enduring and evolving approach.
For pre-service and in-service teachers.
Book Description
People are constantly asking two-time Newbery Medalist Lois Lowry where she gets her ideas. In this fascinating memoir, Lowry answers this question, through recollections of childhood friends and pictures and memories that explore her rich family history. She recounts the pivotal moments that inspired her writing, describing how they magically turned into fiction along the complicated passageway called life. Lowry fans, as well as anyone interested in understanding the process of writing fiction, will benefit from this poignant trip through the past and the present of a remarkable writer.

In Love With Lowry.......2007-07-20
I was lucky enough to see Lois Lowry speak in Knoxville, TN over a year ago. Lowry is a phenomenal story teller--both in print and in person. She told the audience much about her family and growing up...indulged us with photgraphs, stories, and memories. I felt like I was listening to a member of my own family telling me stories; I was completely enthralled and really appreciated Lowry willing sharing her life with so many people. "Looking Back" gave me the same feeling.
The book is not a typical memoir: no linear narration. It is, as she states, "about moments, memories, fragments, falsehoods, and fantasies." Photographs (most taken by herself or her father) are dated and presented with short explanations, memories, or revelations. It brings together two of my very favorite things: pictures and stories. I especially love the story of how she met her second husband, Martin, and her quest for the ideal dog. Fans of Lowry's books (especially of the Anastasia books, Autumn Street, and The Giver) will enjoy quotes from novels which relate to Lowry's life. While reading this book, readers will revel in the extent to which Lowry has placed her own experiences, memories, and stories into her fiction. It's all about stories; how we become ourselves and the importance of remembering.
I believe that I, as a child or teen, probably would not have been entirely interested in "Looking Back." I believe it takes a more mature reader to realize/appreiciate the intimacy and life experiences and milestones expressed in the book. But young fans of Lowry could enjoy learning more about a favorite author and where her stories came from.
Teachers, mothers, writers!! YOU MUST READ THIS!.......2006-11-29
Browsing at my local library, I stumbled upon this book. "HMMMM, this looks interesting," I thought to myself. Little did I know that I had found a book that would bring me to my knees crying and give me one of the biggest "book hangovers" ever. This book followed me through my weekend, and inspired me as a writer ( who wishes she could write with even 1/100th of Lowry's talent) a teacher (who thought of about a zillion really cool writing and reading lessons I could spring from this book) and as a mother (who realized the joy of life, and exactly how fragile and tenacious it really is).
You must read this book. It is easy, and unfolds into a love story, a story of loss, and a story of absolutely LIVING life with as much passion as the moment allows. I don't want to give this book away, because the suprise of it, the thing that made most of the essays connect, is what left me gasping and delighted on snowy Sunday here in Denver.
Absolutely appropriate for children, but I would guess that the essays would appeal more to girls. And if you are a teacher, you will discover a hidden treasure in the book by and about one of the most talented childrens authors of our day!
Enjoy. Have the kleenex handy.
She used her own life as an inspiration for her writing.......2005-10-14
The memoir I read is called "Looking Back a Book of Memories" by Lois Lowry. The book is a collection of Lois Lowry's memories throughout her life. Lois Lowry is a prize winning writer of fiction novels. Each chapter is separate memory. She begins each chapter with a quote from one of her many novels. In this memoir she relates different quotes from her novels back to life experiences. The memories that she describes seem to be used throughout her novels. Writers will draw on memories and events from their own life as part of their story telling.
Lois Lowry noted that she has a lot of babies as characters in her books. For example, in the novel "The Giver" one of the characters was the baby Gabriel. In the novel "Rabble Starkey" there was a baby named Gunter Bigelow. Lois Lowry thinks that she likes to use baby characters because she likes newborn babies. Her fondness for newborn babies was started by a picture her father took of her when she was born in 1937. Fathers weren't normally allowed in the hospital ward but he worked for the hospital and he was a photographer. Her memoir also includes pictures of grandchildren as babies.
In the book, "Find a Stranger, Say Goodbye", she describes a girl looking up as she is standing in thick forest. She describes the emotions as fearful, humorous, and warmth all wrapped together. When Lois was two years old her father took a picture of her standing in a thick "tropical growth" near her house in Hawaii. She is looking up at her father's camera in the same way that she describes the girl in the book. She comments that her life had challenges but was mostly filled with warmth and humor. She says most of the time she remembers she laughed a lot.
In the book, "Anastasia at Your Service", she describes a scene where a young boy is trying to prove to another young girl that he can read. In this scene it is very important for the young boy to be able to read and prove it. She relates this to her need to want to read. When she was 3 years old and her sister was 6 they would play school. Her sister was the teacher because she could read. Lois wanted to read so that she could be the teacher.
In her book of memories, Lois Lowry describes her life using quotes from her fictional books. She discovered that most of the scenes in her books came from her own experiences. She used her own life as an inspiration for her writing. It would be easy to find scenes inspired by her own life in her books because so much of her own life is in her books. She documented many of these in her book of memories.
Looking Back: A Book of Memories.......2002-07-12
How do writers create the characters for their books? Writer Lois Lowry answers this question in this beautiful book of memories. Each individual memory with accompanying black and white photograph illustrates an important event in the author's life. Together they weave a story that is impossible to put down and leaves the reader wanting more. There is humor reminiscent of Erma Bombeck and sadness that makes you want to weep. Lois Lowry includes quotes from characters in her books echoing experiences that are provided in the memories. The death of her sister is found in Number The Stars, her grandparent's house is in Autumn Street, and her son and his horse in The Giver, and she herself in books like Anastasia Krupnik and The One Hundredth Thing about Caroline. Read this book to learn more about a new friend or to find a new one.

In her novel Looking Back, New York Times bestselling author Belva Plain poses the question, Can friendships forged during the idyllic years of college stand the test of time--and betrayal? Recent college graduates and former roommates, classy Cecile, brainy Norma, and ambitious Amanda find their lives intimately entwined when Amanda marries Norma's older brother, Larry, to escape the unrelenting poverty of her family and the total lack of opportunities in the small southern town where she grew up. But their lives will never be the same once Amanda begins a passionate affair with her father-in-law, the cold and commanding L.B. No one escapes unscathed after Amanda confesses all, including the identity of her son's father, at a party, and Norma attempts to boost her heartbroken brother's career at the expense of Cecile's architect husband. This is Belva Plain at her twisted best, providing a bird's-eye view of the sometimes murky lives of ordinary people. If you're looking for a happy ending tied up in a pretty bow, rather than the drama that average lives occasionally take on, Looking Back and Belva Plain in general may not be for you. Loyal fans, however, will thrill to wallow once again in a world only Plain could create. --Alison Trinkle
Book Description
New York Times bestselling author Belva Plain goes to the heart of what it means to be a woman, a wife, and a friend, in her powerful new novel—a story of love and betrayal that measures the limits of loyalty, friendship, and forgiveness.
They met at school and have been inseparable ever since: Cecile, confident, elegant daughter of privilege; Norma, extraordinarily gifted and sadly troubled; and beautiful, ambitious Amanda, determined to rise above her humble southern beginnings. Two are married. One despairs of ever finding love. Three women. Leading their busy adult lives. Yet first and always: friends.
Then something unexpected happens that forever alters their long, complicated friendship. A pivotal event, a shattering act of betrayal shifts the balance of power between husbands and wives, parents and children, sisters and brothers. And in the months that follow, each of them will look at their families, their lives--and one another--differently.
And none of them will ever be the same.

Friendship with a Twist.......2007-10-08
This is the first book I read by Belva Plain and I really liked it. It's about three college graduates to keep in touch although who have very different life styles. It's a bit slow reading, but interesting to see how their lives develop. The ending caught me by surprise and made me want to read more of her books. I would recommend this book, but my husband didn't like it at all. Guess it's one you either love or hate.
Looking Back.......2006-10-19
An interesting story of 3 girls who went to College and graduated together. After graduation they remained in close contact with each other because they lived in the same area. Amanda married Norma's brother so that she could improve her social standing and rise above her poor, uneducated Southern roots. Cecile, the aristocrat, married well and remained in the same social circle as before. Norma, a smart but unattractive girl, finally married her soul mate after much waiting. The three remained friends until circumstances beyond their control caused them to react and defend themselves. A realistic love story with twists and turns of fate.
This Can't Be The Recommended Author(?).......2006-04-12
Belva Plain came highly recommended, and my book club chose "Looking Back" for the month's selection. Many of the ladies in the book club had read Belva Plain previously and had loved everything they read.
That said, I was sorely disappointed in "Looking Back." It read like a shallow romance....and that was evident from the very beginning. There's the pretty girl from bad roots, the elegant rich girl, and the rich girl with too-large calves. They're all friends in college and begin their adult lives near each other.
The story is so obvious. You know what's going to happen before it happens. You don't guess what's going to happen -- you KNOW what's going to happen. The book truly has zero depth.
The writing style isn't special. The characters are under-developed. My recommendation is to move on to another book before even wasting your time.
Not as bad as some reviewers lead you to believe!.......2005-09-27
This is my first Belva Plain endeavor. I must say that I really did enjoy it! It was nice to find a story that is just a good story and not another murder mystery (although someone does die). The three main characters were enjoyable, however, I do agree that they were not as developed as they could have been. Yes, the ending was depressing, but I am sure these sorts of situations happen in life all of the time. I have already purchased another novel by Ms. Plain entitled "The Sight of the Stars" and I am looking forward to reading it in the near future as there are about 19 books ahead of it in my "to read" stack. I recommend this one without reservation, a good, fast, engaging read.

Drab, lifeless characters.......2005-08-29
I happened to borrow the audio version of this from my library, and I should preface this by saying I had no prior interest in Belva Plain, as she does not fit into the typical categories I might seek out for an interesting read. That being said, this is an utterly dull story. There is nothing believable about the relationships that form in the book, and the lack of drama is astounding. NOTHING HAPPENS AT ALL till the very end of the book, and by then you are so bored your brain has no response left. I'm sure there must be something that other readers find appealing, as she seems to have a large following, but if this is any testament to the scope of her writing, I will pass on future editions of her work.
On top of the terrible story line, the reader of the audio book has terrible presentation, which makes the whole thing even more grueling. Given that I am in the car two hours a day commuting, this was almost more painful than having to drive in silence. Really, I can't imagine where they picked her up from either (although I suppose all the class A orators wouldn't touch this book, and probably couldn't have helped much anyway). It's almost funny to listen to her interpretation of any of the men in the story.
Book Description
David Ford has been in the life insurance business for more than thirty years. It seemed natural. David's father was in the life insurance business and his grandfather was in the life insurance business.
The world needs insurance, and people in advanced societies particularly need life insurance. But they often don't think they do, making the job of the life insurance agent difficult and challenging. After all, who wants to think about dying?
The world of life insurance is changing. The policies that were commonly sold by most insurance companies thirty years ago are now out of favor. The universal use of the computer has changed our world, and the life insurance industry has become a part of that revolution. Ford's perspective going back over thirty years gives the reader not only a history of life insurance practices, but points to trends and problems facing the industry in the present and for the future.
Ford has been an agent in the field, fighting for client leads and doing his share of cold calling. His career advanced up the ladder to the home office where he held several administrative positions as well as working diligently to recruit and train new agents for the profession that he learned to love and respect.
Ford treasures the personal relationships he has made over the years, and it is obvious from his writing that his human warmth and sense of humor pervade his writing and his life. If you are thinking of a career in the life insurance business, Ford's book should be required reading. And if you've been in the life insurance business for a few decades, you will want to run, not walk, to get this book. You'll nod your head and chuckle as you read.
Customer Reviews:
A Fun, Insightful Book.......2006-08-04
This is a humorous yet philosophical memoir covering over thirty years in the insurance profession. The author has tried his hand at several different positions, as an agent, a manager, and many home office management positions, and every stop is described with clever wit and humor. I really enjoyed reading this book, and could definitely relate to his experiences and insights. I think anyone who's considering this profession or has been involved in it for any amount of time should read this book!
Great Book!.......2006-08-03
This is definitely NOT a typical business book! It doesn't contain any of the usual cliches or how-to-sell bromides found in most others;instead, it's a funny book about the insurance industry that is informative as well. This book reveals a lot about a business that I knew very little about, yet it reads like a memoir. Not to sound trite, but I got to some parts and couldn't put the book down until I finished! I laughed out loud at some of the experiences he has had through the years, and I think that anyone who has been in the business for any amount of time will really appreciate the insights. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter, which are very appropriate for the content and fun. This really was an enjoyable book!
