When Doctors Get Sick.......2007-09-28
Have you ever wondered how your doctor thinks and feels about disease? The prctice of medicine? You - the patient? Here is a collection of candid accounts by physicians of their personal experiences with serious illness, loss of control, and our health care delivery system.
Honest, straightforward, and sometimes even humorous, the doctors who tell their stories in this book reveal the human side of the medical profession. They describe their experiences with other doctors, their trials and tribulations in coping with their own medical crises, and the effects that illness had on their families and associates. Each doctor offers his or her candid opinion of the health-care system as perceived by the doctor as patient.
Read not only about diseases themselves - such as brain tumor, AIDS, and depression - but about how it feels to be a patient, what it means to be a "sick" doctor, how doctors treat their ill colleagues, and, perhaps more than anything else, what it is like to be an accomplished, achieving, energtic, and exceptionally responsible doctor forced to give up control and become a patient.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-08-07
My 2-year-old daughter loves Maisy books, and this one is another great hit with her. She is now not afraid of the doctor after reading this book! Very cute.
A sweet way to make doctors less scary.......2007-01-17
It took me a while to warm to Maisy -- both the drawings and the language are incredibly simple -- but every kid I know just loves these books. I got this as part of a group of toys and books to prepare my son for his 2-year check-up, and while it may not be the most "informative," per se, it is certainly the one he likes best.
Too simple, no substance.......2004-04-09
I was disappointed and am reconsidering ever buying books online again! You can't really see what you are getting, and this is just too simple to be useful.
Doctor Maisy.......2002-01-10
If your child loves Maisy books as much as mine does, definitely add this one to your collection! Not only are the pictures colorful and inviting, but it also makes going to the doctor seem fun and exciting! Plus, it's always great to see Maisy and her friends playing different roles and doing fun things! Each page brings delight to my child's eyes!

And if you can't, just think of your kids--all the time they have to spend in tight spaces--like cars, planes, trains, the doctor's office, the grocery store, being sick or housebound, waiting in line. Kids need room to move around, but there are many times when they just plain can't have it.While raising two exuberant boys, teaching preschool, leading Cub Scouts, and running a birthday party business, Carol Kranowitz came up with savvy, creative ways to keep kids content in tight spaces. Her activity ideas combine old standbys with new ones born of desperation and cramped quarters. They follow a philosophy that helps kids develop their different skills and abilities while entertaining themselves and interacting. You'll find great projects for every imaginable small space parents and children encounter:Fun Food for Tiny Kitchens: Ants on a Log, Footprints in the Snow, and Aiken Drum FacesIn the Urban Community: Windowsill Garden, Bug Jar, and Corn-on-the-SpongeWhen the Walls Seem to Be Closing In: Pillow Crashing, People Sandwich, and Teeter-TotterWhen what you've got is a small space and a restless child, what you need are 101 ingenious solutions--right away. 101 Activities for Kids in Tight Spaces.......2006-11-12
This book is packed with great info for parents with kids that have sensory intergration dysfunction syndrome.
disappointing.......2005-01-17
I bought this book in preparation for an airplane trip with my family, including a 5 year old autistic daughter. As I am familiar with Kranowitz's book The Out of Sync Child, regarding sensory integration, I was disappointed that there was not more in the book that I could use with my daughter. Also, the ideas that could be used away from home are somewhat limited.
I have found some fun activities in this book to do with my children at home, so it is not a worthless book. However, it didn't really fill the need I was looking for.
Great book!.......1999-03-25
It has lots of old ideas I'd forgotten from my own childhood and it has lots of new ideas. The writer understands the needs of children. They can behave a lot better if they have interesting little things to do like the ideas that are in this book.
One basic problem with this book--.......1998-04-20
I have a basic problem with this book: it's too small! Although 101 activities sound like a lot, when you break them down into situations in which they are workable (at home, waiting in the doctor's office, in the car/train/airplane, sick in bed, etc.) a person might like more ideas. The activities presented in the book are simple. They are fun. And all of them I have tried work (many are old stand-bys that this grandma used with her own children-but many were new to me). I plan to use them soon on a long trip with my grandchildren. When could you use them next?!

"As always, there are facts to be learned and loads of puns and playful language to entertain readers. This is another winner, ‘for real and absolute positive.' " — SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL
She took her own temperature. With the fancy thermometer that beeped. It was not normal. It was not 98.6. Judy's temperature was 188.8! Judy's temperature was 00.0! Judy's temperature was beep-beep-beep-beep-beep. She, Judy Moody, had the temperature of an outer-space alien!
Judy Moody has a mood for every occasion, and now, she is in a medical mood! It's no secret that Judy wants to be like Elizabeth Blackwell, first woman doctor, when she grows up. So when Class 3T starts to study the Amazing Human Body, Judy can hardly wait to begin her better-than-best-ever third-grade projects: show-and-tell with something way rarer than a scab, a real-live ooey-gooey operation, and a cloning experiment that may create double trouble for Judy and her friends. RARE!

Judy Moody, M.D
The Doctor Is In!
By Megan McDonald
Judy Moody is back!!! This time Judy has a challenge to become just like her idol, Elizabeth Blackwell, the first women doctor. Judy has a school assignment and it's about the human body. Judy dresses up like Elizabeth Blackwell for her project and operates on her patient, a zucchini. Meanwhile her brother, Stink gets sick, and her friend Frank tries to clone a guinea pig that is Jessica Finch's, Judy's enemy. This book is for kids of all ages. The illustrator did an awesome job on all the pictures and the author describes the situations beautifully and you can get a picture in your mind about what she is talking about. This book is really laugh out loud funny. I think that Judy is hilarious because she tries all these crazy things and she thinks that she can become the first girl doctor. Are Judy's friends there to help her or betray her? Hope you enjoy this book!!
Great reading for young girls.......2006-02-25
These are great books for the 8-10 year old girl. My daughter does not like to read and yet this series has captured her imagination and kept her engrossed for long periods. Well meaning topics and fun reading for kids.

London after Midnight..........2003-04-27
Poor Edwin Spindrift, a proper Doctor of Philosophy and a lecturer on Linguistics passes out during one of his classes in Burma and is sent to London only to be diagnosed with a brain tumor. On the eve of his operation Spindrift awakens suddenly with an urge to escape the hospital. He starts off searching for his wife, so he could get some money from her, but he ends up unsure of what exactly he is searching for.
This is my first Anthony Burgess novel, and I was not disappointed. Burgess' description of the dark side of London is so detailed you can practically feel the grime. His characters are colorful caricatures, giving the book substance, especially the masochist kettle-mobster who swears that Spindrift is "kinky".
The linguistic aspect of the book is a little over the top; whenever Spindrift goes on about a word, the root of the word, it is a bit dull. His lecture on cockney, however was informative and amusing. There are several laugh out loud moments. R. Dickie, Spindrift's hospital roommate is so affable it's a shame he's only in the first few chapters. The most amusing part of the book, however, is when Spindrift is jailed in a flat, and in the middle of trying to escape suddenly becomes distracted by a dirty magazine.
I gave this book a three stars, but I think it's more a 3 ½. Edwin is a charming hopeless character who you can't help but cheer for. And at 260 pages the book is also quick read. It certainly won't disappoint.
Humanity is Sick.......2001-08-06
Anthony Burgess (the late), author of many books including, "A Clockwork Orange," brings another masterful piece of literature to the English language.
"The Doctor is Sick," showcases Burgess tallents as a linguistic master with a control of and look at the English language in its many forms. Burgess' use of the English language as a plot moving device is at the same level of pure genius that it reached in his most famous novel, "A Clockwork Orange."
At the same time, this is a sentimental tale that looks at the modern world and its tendancy to dehumanize and objectify people. Funny, and comedic in an off kilter satirical way, this novel tries to bring the humanity back to the protagonist, the sick professor, Edwin Spindrift.
The story shows the same cyincal look towards the hospital, and specifically mental health issues, that were later seen in the second of Burgess' "Enderby" tales.
This is truely the story of the humanization of Dr. Spindrift and his joining the "real" world for the first time in his life. A wonderfuly written, bittingly satrical and greatly humorous book, this is a must read for anyone who enjoyed "Clockwork," the widely read "Complete Enderby," or any of Burgess' other works of fiction.
There is an insider look at the medical world, Burgess, who himself was diagnossed with a brain tumor, brings his own knowledge of the condition and adds to it the satire on British institutions that was a common theme in his fiction.
Anthony Burgess shows us that humanity is sick as much as the good doctor, and that it might be out tendancy to lose the human in the machines of every day life, that is the real problem.
Mindblowing.......2001-07-12
I bought this book after being mesmerized by "A Clockwork Orange"
While nothing like ACO (except for Burgess's masterful use of language), this book was every bit as riveting.
Dr. Edwin Spindrift, a linguistics professor in Burma, is diagnosed with a brain tumor. He, accompanied by his oddball wife, goes to London for medical treatment.
In the hospital, the mellow Spindrift meets a whole assortment of people: unique patients, arrogant insensitive physicians, cold uncaring nurses, rude orderlies, distant medical technicians, and the people who love them. Confused, bored, and exasperated with painful medical tests, Spindrift "escapes" the brain ward to disappear into nighttime London.
Misty and cold "civilized" London is very alien to the doctor, who has grown accustomed to sunny tropical Burma. Fascinated and horrified at the same time, Spindrift wanders the dark recesses of a Modern Western City in search of... something. Or maybe he's just running.
Spindrift runs into some very strange and utterly believable people. He finds himself in unusual, bizarre situations, every one of them genuine and real. More at home with language and words than with people, Spindrift is nevertheless spellbound by the alien Londoners with their colorful speech and habits.
After numerous adventures (or misadventures), he finds himself back in the stark, bright, antiseptic hospital. The hospital being so very alien in its own way, Edwin Spindrift PhD wonders just how many of those bizarre memories were real... in retrospect, things seem so amazing.
The story is a bit dated yet enough has remained the same (proof that some things may never change) that Spindrift's wild trip is still understandable and imaginable. It's a story of perceptions, or false perceptions. TDIS was one of those rare books that I had to set down sometimes to THINK about what I had just read. I hadn't done that with a book in a long time. I enjoyed not only reading this book, but thinking about it, too.
A very sly tale. Highly recommended.
The Mind's Eye: The Doctor is Sick.......2001-01-13
I just finished the book about twenty minutes ago and was transfixed (read: bothered, intrigued, exhillarated) by it. I am a long-standing fan of his, and in many ways, I think this may be his most accessible, but certainly not facile, book that I have read.
Having come to Burgess by virtue of End of the World News, Enderby, and Nothing like the Sun, and to a lesser extent (I was too young... must re-read), A Clockwork Orange, I am always struck with the profound, yet playful, way Burgess handles reality.
In The Doctor is Sick, he forces us to explore the ontomological nature of the novel, this novel, our own minds, and life itself. The Doctor is Sick begins with a fairly well-grounded, if odd (mental hospital) setting. Soon, the protagonist, Dr. Spindrift, embarks on what seems to be a fanciful, creatively forged, comic journey through his own imagination. Then, as this reader expects, we go back to the original scene. Or do we?
Finally, the book impels us to see the world through the mind's eye of Spindrift, and forces questions about which parts of the book are "real," or imagined. Of course, as a work of literature, it is all imagined, as Burgess slyly suggests with his omniscient, and deeply feeling!, narrator. And while we, or I, may never sort out defitinively what Spindrift, much less, Burgess had in mind, it is in effect Spindrift's brilliant imagination, provided by Burgess, that provokes a totally credible look at one's own fragile perception, at all perception, at the, perhaps false, dichotomy between the real and imagined. We should all give great thanks for the Author's ability to keep in reign the flying, floating nature of the mind' eye and transmit it with brilliant comic, tragic, maybe realistic imagination.
A great author, a great book.
The Doctor is Sick: a Masterpiece.......1998-05-04
Burgess has a way with words unlike any other author. This worderful talent is vividly expressed in A Clockwork Orange, but Mr. Burgess also displays this in The Doctor is Sick. He not only plays on words in a raw sublimity, but he also draws a perfect image for the reader. Truly a masterpiece.

Customer Reviews:
As bioethics, this book is something of a pageturner!.......1998-12-07
I highly recommend it to healthcare professionals and members of bioethics committees, as well as to others interested in the ethical dilemma that the concept of futility represents.
Rubin argues "that physician unilateral decision making on the basis of futility is a problematic and misguided approach to the challenge of setting appropriate limits in medicine". She believes we have been distracted from the meaningful debate about the underlying ethical conflict concerning fundamental differences in view and interest between patients, their families, and their physicians by mistakenly turning to the concept of futility. By rejecting the language of futility she urges us to argue more forthrightly and precisely about the moral appeals at stake between patients and those responsible for their care.
She begins with an overview of the futility debate followed by a conceptual analysis of the term itself. In her third chapter Rubin defends the popular argument that physicians cannot justify unilateral refusal to provide a certain treatment on the grounds of evaluative futility, or "it just would not be worth it to the patient' In chapter four she serves up a bitter pill to us physicians when she deconstructs our certainty in the concept of physiologic futility. Most of us grew up as positivists in that science seemed to deliver us some true facts to work with in the clinical setting. More frequently we speak of data and evidence with our knowledge claims less robust now. This is as it should be. Rubin applies this shift in the philosophy of science to clinical medicine developing a strong argument against unilateral physician decision making based on the concept of physiologic futility. Her last chapter offers a variety of alternative recommendations for solving ethical dilemmas she believes superior to unilateral physician decision making based on futility.

Childhood memories.......2005-05-31
When I was a small child back in the late sixties, early seventies, my this was probably my favorite book in the whole world. When read in very expressive voices, it adds to the wonderful illustrations in this book. I still have my original copy from when I was a child, and hold it close to my heart. It thrills me to know that perhaps another generation will be exposed to this book, and its next phase begins.
An appreciated encore printing.......2002-10-03
I remember these Victorian silhouette illustrations on bold backgrounds from when I was young, and when we found it recently at the library I discovered that it has as much appeal to my four year old today as it did (and still does) to me. The objects the doctor extracts from a young boy's dramatically bloated stomach get progressively more outrageous as they go along, and the story ends with a funny twist. I'm delighted to find this 1966 Berkeley, CA classic available again in print.
A Book A Child Will Never Forget!.......2000-02-19
I have been looking for this book for eight years. My Grandmother read it to me when I was a child.I'm a mother of two now and I would love for my children to pass this book on to their children. This is a book I will never forget, and one that I am sure your chilren will never forget also!
