Zadie Smith's White Teeth: A Reader's Guide (Continuum Contemporaries)
ASIN: 0375703861
Release Date: 2001-06-12 |
Amazon.com
Epic in scale and intimate in approach, White Teeth is a formidably ambitious debut. First novelist Zadie Smith takes on race, sex, class, history, and the minefield of gender politics, and such is her wit and inventiveness that these weighty subjects seem effortlessly light. She also has an impressive geographical range, guiding the reader from Jamaica to Turkey to Bangladesh and back again.
Still, the book's home base is a scrubby North London borough, where we encounter Smith's unlikely heroes: prevaricating Archie Jones and intemperate Samad Iqbal, who served together in the so-called Buggered Battalion during World War II. In the ensuing decades, both have gone forth and multiplied: Archie marries beautiful, bucktoothed Clara--who's on the run from her Jehovah's Witness mother--and fathers a daughter. Samad marries stroppy Alsana, who gives birth to twin sons. Here is multiculturalism in its most elemental form: "Children with first and last names on a direct collision course. Names that secrete within them mass exodus, cramped boats and planes, cold arrivals, medical checks."
Big questions demand boldly drawn characters. Zadie Smith's aren't heroic, just real: warm, funny, misguided, and entirely familiar. Reading their conversations is like eavesdropping. Even a simple exchange between Alsana and Clara about their pregnancies has a comical ring of truth: "A woman has to have the private things--a husband needn't be involved in body business, in a lady's... parts." And the men, of course, have their own involvement in bodily functions:
The deal was this: on January 1, 1980, like a New Year dieter who gives up cheese on the condition that he can have chocolate, Samad gave up masturbation so that he might drink. It was a deal, a business proposition, that he had made with God: Samad being the party of the first part, God being the sleeping partner. And since that day Samad had enjoyed relative spiritual peace and many a frothy Guinness with Archibald Jones; he had even developed the habit of taking his last gulp looking up at the sky like a Christian, thinking: I'm basically a good man.
Not all of White Teeth is so amusingly carnal. The mixed blessings of assimilation, for example, are an ongoing torture for Samad as he watches his sons grow up. "They have both lost their way," he grumbles. "Strayed so far from what I had intended for them. No doubt they will both marry white women called Sheila and put me in an early grave." These classic immigrant fears--of dilution and disappearance--are no laughing matter. But in the end, they're exactly what gives White Teeth its lasting power and undeniable bite. --Eithne Farry
Book Description
Zadie Smith’s dazzling debut caught critics grasping for comparisons and deciding on everyone from Charles Dickens to Salman Rushdie to John Irving and Martin Amis. But the truth is that Zadie Smith’s voice is remarkably, fluently, and altogether wonderfully her own.
At the center of this invigorating novel are two unlikely friends, Archie Jones and Samad Iqbal. Hapless veterans of World War II, Archie and Samad and their families become agents of England’s irrevocable transformation. A second marriage to Clara Bowden, a beautiful, albeit tooth-challenged, Jamaican half his age, quite literally gives Archie a second lease on life, and produces Irie, a knowing child whose personality doesn’t quite match her name (Jamaican for “no problem”). Samad’s late-in-life arranged marriage (he had to wait for his bride to be born), produces twin sons whose separate paths confound Iqbal’s every effort to direct them, and a renewed, if selective, submission to his Islamic faith. Set against London’s racial and cultural tapestry, venturing across the former empire and into the past as it barrels toward the future,
White Teeth revels in the ecstatic hodgepodge of modern life, flirting with disaster, confounding expectations, and embracing the comedy of daily existence.

Customer Reviews:
I'd Rather Have a Root Canal.......2007-09-26
I think I might have liked this book a lot more if I hadn't listened to this audiobook version. 22 hours of stereotyped Indian and Jamaican accents was enough to drive me up the wall. I'll have to wait a while and read the actual book without the distraction of grinding my teeth at the bad accents.
In the meantime, someone in a writer's group suggested this book should get the Nobel Prize--I wouldn't go nearly that far. I know what I'm supposed to say about how it's a wonderful portrait of the immigrant's dilemma of assimilation versus maintaining tradition and the second generation immigrant's confusion about his/her roots. And how it illustrates modernity versus antiquity with the whole FutureMouse debacle. And I should say how relevant the conflict between Muslims like Samad and Millat and Christians/atheists is in the post-9/11 world. Finally, I'm supposed to say how magnificent it is that the author wrote this magnificent book at the tender age of 23.
Having mentioned all that, I still didn't like this book--and not solely because of the problem I mentioned at the beginning. I think what was missing here was that most basic, primal need: to actually LIKE someone in this book. Simply put, I wouldn't want to know any of the characters in this book. Samad, Alsana, and Millat are loud, pushy, and often obnoxious while Maggad is stuffy and dull. Archie and Iree are timid and weak, with Iree being especially whiny to boot. Clara is practically nonexistent after the first couple chapters. As a reader, was there one person I could latch onto and root for? Not a one.
That was the most grievous problem, but not the only one. The constant authorial intrusions into the narrative became quite irritating, interrupting the flow of scenes with snide comments and sidebar discussions. The lengthy histories of just about every minor character and organization also became tedious, also making for too many characters, none of whom I could care less about. Then of course one of those minor characters makes a sudden reappearance at the end, which really didn't make much sense and seemed like a clumsy attempt at unleashing a surprise plot twist. I was also confused at the rather abrupt way in which Iree rapes one of Samad's sons. Again, this is probably another clumsy attempt at a plot twist. It certainly made me lose whatever sympathy I had left for Iree.
For the obligatory plot summary, this is the story of two families. Samad is a Bengali who immigrated to London and eventually was arranged to be married to the much-younger Alsana, who gave birth to twin boys. Samad is torn between his Muslim beliefs and the temptations of the non-Muslim world, especially a music teacher. This transgression leads to guilt that he partially alleviates by sending one of his boys back to Bangladesh, while keeping the other at home. One boy turns out to be a secular atheist and the other a fundamentalist Muslim who joins a group known as KEVIN, sort of a poor man's Nation of Islam, not to be confused with terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda. Meanwhile, Archie Jones was left by his wife and determined to kill himself until Fate intervenes and he winds up at a New Year's Eve party where he meets the young Jamaican woman named Clara, whom he marries and they have a chubby daughter named Iree, who loves one of Samad's boys but feels ashamed by her weight and half-Jamaican heritage. Eventually a third family is drawn into this with the father of that family genetically engineering a mouse called the FutureMouse that is opposed by Samad and one of his sons and supported by the other. And that leads to a final epic showdown of sorts settled by the aforementioned secondary character appearing out of left field to wreak havoc.
So as should be obvious, I really didn't like this book. Maybe if I read it again I'll feel differently--that's happened before. In the meantime, I'd recommend another stunning book by a 23-year-old woman: "The Heart is A Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers. Also, if you want a better book on Muslims around the Indian subcontinent I'd recommend "Midnight's Children" by Salman Rushdie.
That is all.
Yes, Zadie Smith IS that good!.......2007-09-24
I loved this book so much, I wanted to beg all my friends to read it so I would have someone to discuss it with!
Zadie Smith is a superb talent.
Simply Superb.......2007-08-26
"White Teeth" came highly recommended by a trusted reader and I've finally gotten around to reading it. The story revolves around three families, three cultures, three religions (Chalfenism among them) and three histories. Is it good things or bad things that come in threes? Set in London yet rooted in Jamaica and Bangladesh, "White Teeth" is a convergence of class, history, and culture. The Jones' are an interracial English/Jamaican couple brought together by their individual need to flee. Archibal fleeing the chaos of a marriage seized by mental illness; Clara escaping the grip of the Jehovah Witness religion that threatens to permeate all aspects of her life. The Iqbals' are an arranged marriage, brought together by cultural and religious history. Samad conflicted by a history he fears will be erased by the present; Alsana, strong and willful, yet unable to absorb aspects of western culture that are foreign to her religious beliefs. The Chalfens are an agnostic English couple brought together by the desire to further a tradition of intellectual and liberal empire. Marcus, a scientist from a long line of intellectuals, is engaged in research that could alter the genetic makeup of humanity in ways that could eliminate the randomness of genetic mishaps and malfunctions (the very randomness that is seen by some as the will of God); Joyce a horticulturalist and essayist with an overbearing need to nurture and cultivate everything and everyone around her.
Although the interactions of the parental units creatively and humorously explore the historical affects of colonization on the colonized and the colonizer, it is the lives of the next generation of Iqbals, Jones and Chalfens that allow the author to explore issues of cultural, religious and class differences between the western and eastern hemisphere. Irie, the biracial daughter of the Jones', is burdened not only with the trials of adolescence within the pop culture of a modernized England but also with the history of colonized Jamaica and the salvation sought by her grandmother through the doctrine of the Jehovah Witness faith. Millat and Magid, the Cain and Able offspring of the Iqbals' are challenged with questions of identify in the face of an Islamic tradition that seems at constant odds with the more liberal communities within which they live. Joshua, the Chalfens' progeny is also trying to navigate the choppy waters of puberty as he realizes that the lineage he's inherited may be at stark contrast to the person he's becoming.
"White Teeth" is a spectacular debut novel. Smith has unleashed a level of creativity typically found in seasoned writers. She has created memorable, lively characters each with a unique voice that highlights the diversity of London while simultaneously calling attention to the commonality of experience inherent in the legacy of oppression. I particularly enjoyed the cleaver way in which Smith uses teeth as a metaphor throughout the novel. For certainly history is deeply rooted in who we are as individuals, a people, a nation. While there are times when we must extract ourselves from our history to forge a path that allows us to live up to our full potential, our history will always be the pulp at the center of who we are and invariably impacts our future. This is great text for group discussion. Highly Recommended!
Great.......2007-08-23
Paid for expedited service & I received that & more. Would definitely recommend for purchases. Fast & efficient service.
90% Brilliant... .......2007-07-24
Zadie Smith is very, very funny and extremely imaginative. This book has many moments of genius. Most seasoned writers do not have a quarter of her talent.
The terrific characters are laced with sorrow, irony and pettiness. She creates worlds within worlds and shattered dreams within dreams. Almost perfect, and then the last 50 pages or so go off track. I suspect the author was just plain exhausted and couldn't fathom how to tie everything together. Why couldn't an editor tell her to go back and fix it? Such joy and then such sorrow.

Worked for our son.......2007-09-28
This is the best book we have ever bought for our son! Our son was biting for months. Every week he had a least two incidents of biting, and MANY MANY attempts. The teachers would monitor him constantly.
We tried time-out, cold drinks, hugs, and prayer. Then his anti-social behavior went away for a whole week. We thought we were home free, until he started a new school. Again, the biting came back. The teacher said, "it's not a matter of if he will bite, it is when." He had five or six attempts everyday. My son was going to be kicked out of school. Then I read an article about these books.
I ran out bought the book the end of August. Thank God, he has not bitten since. He loves the book, and I attribute this book to his change in behaviour. He has not even ATTEMPTED to bite once -- knock on wood.
I don't claim this will work for everyone, but it sure can't hurt to try. Thank you so much Ms Verdick for an amazing book.
Outstanding!.......2007-08-08
We have a wonderful little 14 month old guy at our daycare who has been randomly biting everyone. Including my 7 month old baby girl. The sitter and the boy's mom had tried all kinds of things. Startling him, ignoring him to comfort the bite-ee, and a myriad of other stuff. Out of desperation (I am crazy about our sitter AND this little boy, but was unhappy about the biting), I bought this book after the third bite in a week. The sitter read it to the little guy and injected the little boy's name into every "you" in the book. It seems to have gotten the message across and so far no more bites have gone down. Best of all, there is a section with information and ideas for parents and caregivers about biting, why it happens, ideas to prevent and re-direct. I really like the approach of this book and I highly recommend it to anyone with a biter or bite-ee that needs some help.
great book.......2007-08-06
My son, 28 months, loves this book and it has really helped us. He really likes to hear this book, reading it over and over again. And he seems to be able to relate to the phrase, "ouch! biting hurts!" It has given us good opportunities to discuss the problem and to discuss what else could be done instead of biting. We have been very pleased.
Gets the message across.......2007-07-20
This book was somewhat helpful, for both us parents and our child. Now whenever we say something about biting, Jonah (21 months) will say "ouch, biting hurts" although it's not clear that he understands what that means. I wish I could say his biting has stopped, it hasn't, but I think he's teething and hope it will be over soon.
It seems to have worked!.......2007-06-16
I kindof wish the artwork was cuter in this book . . . or maybe it is the writing? I don't know, but nonetheless my son loves it and after we bought it, his biting problem improved almost 100%.

Chills the "dentist" anxiety for first time patients.......2007-10-03
I thought this would be a good book to read to my child prior to seeing a dentist. It is/was! I would recommend it for any parent who is needing to take their young child to the dentist for the first time.
Great way to prepare kids for the first dentist visit!.......2007-08-11
I used this with two 3-year-old boys who were known to balk at unfamiliar situations and throw ear-shattering tantrums if neccesary to get away from their object of fear. This book went a long way toward manking the dentist experience a whole lot more "interesting" vs. "scary". Both boys now look forward to their check-ups and are very familiar with what to expect thanks to Dora and her friends.
book for easing dentist anxiety.......2007-05-14
This has been a great resource for my 3-4 year old. Dora is a familiar face who shows what will basically happen at a dental visit. I do wish it could have shown Dora getting her teeth polished, or something like that, but over all a very good resource.
2 year old toddlers were captivated.......2007-05-14
We have twin girls , 2 years old and they are about to have their first visit with the dentist soon. They love this book (we have 2 copies). They are curious and they enjoy reading it over and over again. I think it will help them be more prepared when they take their first visit to the dentist.
teaching about going to the dentist & dental hygeine is always beneficial.......2007-02-12
Anything that promotes dental hygeine and not to fear visiting the dentist is always a favorable item in our home.
Everyone likes Dora, so why not let your child's favorite character go to the friendly dentist? Next, go to Walmart or Target and buy her a Dora toothbrush and show her what Dora uses, and how to brush teeth (especially after eating any sweets) The earlier you can instill good habits in your child, the better and easier it is for you as the parent or caregiver.
As a parent, I don't care very much for Dora books or shows, but who asked me for my opinion? We care what our child thinks and wants in a book.

Helps in relaxing.......2007-01-17
I bought this because I tend to grind my teeth at night. I listen to it before I go to sleep and it has helped me to relax. It also makes me aware that I am clenching my jaw and other muscles. It hasn't completely eliminated the grinding but I do feel better in the morning.
TMJ can it rid you of teeth grinding?.......2006-11-05
This is merely a relaxation medium. I felt like I was back in LaMaze class preparing for childbirth. It helps me to relax the jaw, something most people don't realize they are clinching when they go to sleep. I am more aware of it now, and tell myself to relax the jaw as I am falling off to sleep, but I still wear my teeth guard, without it I would not be able to eat the next day due to sore jaw.
very relaxing.......2006-01-31
this CD is very helpful, a must for anyone who grinds their teeth at night. I have noticed a big improvement in the way I feel in the morning.
Surprisingly effective.......2005-10-28
I ordered this on a bit of a lark when I was ordering "Taking Control of TMJ" by Robert O. Uppgaard. (I very highly recommend that book as well.) I was having a bad TMJ flare-up after dental work, and was buying anything I thought might help.
As it turned out, there were three things that helped me the most: this CD, the exercises in the aforementioned book, and cutting waaaay back on caffeine. (Coffee seems to be much more problematic than tea.)
This CD had an immediate effect. After the first use, the next morning I woke up with significantly less pain in my jaw. (That had been the worst time of day for me.) I was really relieved, as I'd been in pain for weeks!
There are many different causes that can contribute to TMJ. I don't have bite or joint problems, but I do grind and carry tension in my jaw habitually, so my problems are mostly muscular. If this is your situation, I would definitely recommend you give this CD a try. I would add the caveat that this is not going to be a replacement for dental work or surgery, IF you need those things. On the other hand, this has been a lot more effective than the very expensive night guards I have tried in the past, which didn't stop me from grinding at all.
It's not magic - It didn't eliminate jaw tension entirely. But I didn't expect that. It really has helped me a lot, and I continue to use it every night.

A Book Review from a Spiritridge Third Grader.......2007-03-22
Have you ever lost a tooth, Junie B. has. She wants it to stay in her mouth! You see her friend Herb, has and Uncle Lou, who has no teeth! She doesn't want to end up like him.
I like this story because it is extremely hilarious, because Junie B. brought her spit cup that had blood on it to her class.
I recommend this book to people who like a great laugh.
Excellent early chapter book that is fun to read. .......2007-03-21
Yikes! Our favorite first grader has loose tooth! Another great book by
the author Barbara Park. She has written the entire Junie B. series.
Her style of writing is like no other. She gets kids interested in
reading especially chapter books. This series is about a girl named
Junie
B. Jones. The must always be included! That is according to Junie B.
that is. The exuberant girl who is either in kindergartener and first
grader is the star of the books. The Junie B. books are consistently on
both the New York Times and the USA Today bestseller lists.
As of this date their are 26 books in the Junie B. series with the
newest being Junie B. Dumb Bunny that just cam out the beginning of this
year 2007. We have almost all the books and have borrowed the others
from the library. There isn't one that we have missed reading in this
series. We have this particular book in the paperback edition. The
copyright is 2002. It come with a special surprise that can be found in
the back of the book. I don't think by telling anyone here that I will
ruin it so here goes. There is fun punch out that can be made into a
little box. It says, Junie B. Tooth Fairy Box. It's made for the kid to
place their tooth in for the tooth fairy.
Let me first give some insight about this series of books. Junie B.
Jones were the first chapter books that my daughter started reading. My
daughter and admittly myself were captivated by them. Junie B. is an
outrageous girl with a larger then life mind. She is a determined girl
who feels like like should always go her way. When they don't then the
trouble starts. Through her life experiences Junie B. always learns the
what is right. So there is a lesson to be learned from the books but
it's done in such a light hearted and funny manner a won't kid recognize
it.
In this book Junie B. is in first grade. Her top tooth is loose. She
happens to be the first in her class to loose a top tooth. She lost her
bottom front ones last year but she didn't like it. She isn't thrilled
about loosing this tooth either. She doesn't like the idea of her smile
looking different then the others in her class. Why can't all the
others have loose top tooth too? Then they would all look different.
She decides if she doesn't wiggle it then it will get tight again and
never come out. But of course it does. Now she has the tooth fairy to
worry about. One of the boys in her class said he wasn't real. If there
really is a tooth fairy who is this woman and what does she do with all
the used teeth. You'll have to read the book to find out the end but as
usual it doesn't disappoint.
The books has 80 pages with 9 chapters. Their are about two
illustrations per chapter. These are done in black and white print. The
are perfectly done by the illustrator, Denise Brunkus She can captures
the right emotions with her drawings. But the writer Barbara Park is
the reason to get this book. Her writing is simply hilarious. She is in
touch with just how a first grader might feel in this situation.
This whole series rocks! Oh, and about that grammar thing..........2006-10-09
The whole series rocks! I love the Junie B. Jones books and I'm 11! About the grammar thing, that's the way Junie B. Jones talks because she's in first grade! You don't expect a first grader to have the greatest grammar in the world do you? Barbara Park is simply using her imagination on how to make the book more interesting. Here, I'll read a line from the book then change it: 'Cause and even worser problem popped in my head. (Page 17 if you want to look) What if Barbara Park had made Junie B. Jones say, Because a even worse problem popped into my head. That's just plain boring.
Junie B is a Afraid of Losing Her Teeth.......2006-03-24
Junie B. Jones is a very good series. She is very funny. My favorite part of this book is when Junie B. Jones is scared of losing her teeth and also scared of showing up in school that day but after she looks in the mirror for a while she sees that she looks good without her tooth! At first she thinks that there is no Tooth Fairy but when she finally agrees to put her tooth under her pillow the next morning she realizes that the Tooth Fairy really does exist. She is exited to find alot of money under her pillow! I think you would really enjoy this book if you read it!

Eat your heart out, tooth fairy. According to the informal research of the author, the world is full of other, equally fascinating myths and traditions about what happens, or should be done, when those milk choppers part company with childish gums. If you come from Chile or Costa Rica, your parents will have the tooth made into a charm. If you're Venezuelan, you put the tooth under your pillow and hope that a mouse brings you money. (Oddly enough, mice, milk teeth, and money are associated all over the world.) Playful illustrations by G. Brian Karas include a world map, plus lots of fun depictions of the world's dentally challenged junior inhabitants. (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr
Book Description
Travel around the world and discover the surprising things children do when they lose a tooth. Selby B. Beeler spent years collecting traditions from every corner of the globe for this whimsical book, and G. Brian Karas adds to the fun, filling every page with humorous detail. He perfectly captures the excitement and pride that children experience when a tooth falls out.

The Birds Only Take CLEAN Teeth!.......2005-12-12
What an awesome read! It had never occured to me that children in other countries may not have a "tooth fairy" experience. I purchased this book for my pre-K class (none of the kids have lost any teeth yet, but are really looking forward to it!) Children in many countries around the world are visited by "El Raton" a rat or mouse who comes during the night to take away lost teeth and sometimes replaces them with money or gifts. My favorite country in this book was Brazil. In Brazil, the birds come to take lost teeth- but only if they are clean. Dirty teeth mean no money is left for the child. This is a great encouragement for Brazilian children to brush their teeth every day! Great for 5 to 12-year-olds.
Throw Your Tooth on the Roof.......2005-10-19
My 6 year old grandson, Evan, and I took turns reading, questioning, and laughing as we turned the pages of this interesting and enlightening little book. We had some light conversation and lots of laughs about what parents (and grandparents) in our culture and parents in other cultures tell their children when the first tooth is lost. Evan wanted to know why such a "common" experience caused such a variety of responses. And, why parents had to make up stories in the first place. Well now, that's a good question!
A delightful book for children and adults.......2005-03-11
Even though this book was written primarily for children, as a folklorist I found it most enjoyable and discovered so many fascinating traditions that are not recorded in any folklore archives. Here every single continent is represented and we learn how children of different nationalities dispose of their lost milk tooth. Of course, it is only to be expected that a few obscure examples have not been included. For instance, there is no reference to the old Cornish custom by which "children's first teeth are burnt to prevent dog's teeth or 'snaggles' - irregular teeth coming in their stead" (M.A. Courtney "Folklore and Legends of Cornwall", 1890, rep. 1989, pp. 156-7). Moreover, there is no mention of the Maltese custom of burying the tooth in a flower pot so that the new tooth (like the plant in the pot) will emerge (Pullicino, J.C. "Studies in Maltese Folklore", Malta Univ. Press, 1976, rep.1992, p.245). Yet there are so many fascinating examples, most of which were unknown to me. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Greek custom of throwing the milk tooth onto the roof ( a custom I was interested to learn is also pracitised in Korea and Taiwan). Infact, in Greece the throwing of the tooth onto the roof is accompanied by the reciting of a little rhyme which can be loosely translated as follows: 'Take sow my tooth and give me an iron one so that I can chew rusks'. In some regions of Greece, it is a mouse not a sow which is invoked. Therefore I was interested to see how the mouse also features in several parallel traditions throughout the world. For instance, we learn that Spanish children believe that the mouse Ratoncito Perez will substitute the tooth under the pillow for money or sweets(candies) as will his French counterpart La Petite Souris. Some peoples wrap their teeth in various materials for different reasons. Children of other nations bury their teeth ( e.g. Filipino children to make a wish). Yet in Turkey it is parents, not children who bury the tooth. Thai and Vietnames children dispose of their teeth in different ways, depending on whether it is an upper or lower tooth. The custom of Tajikistan reminded me of Greek mythology since the 'sown' teeth 'grow up to be warriors'. There are so many more interesting examples and it would be a shame for me to divulge more of them here. It is better to have access to all the examples by buying a copy of this book. I can guarantee that both you and your children will thoroughly enjoy it!
You are going to love this book........2004-09-08
I use this book as a reference when I do dental education for all of our county's K and 3rd graders. It allows us to discuss the tooth fairy (children love that) and cultural diversity. While talking about the tooth fairy, we are allowed to discuss that while we may celebrate life events differently, we are all the same, regardless of our skin color or where we live. Buy this book for your children, your grand children, and your friend's children. You will love this book.

Who would of guessed?.......2006-11-14
Who would have ever guessed that dental disease could have such a signifigant part in so many illnesses? For far to long denistry and the rest of medicine have been totally seperate fields. What is going on in your mouth is seen as having little relavance to the disease conditions going on the in the rest of the body. For to long dental school training has focused on saving your teeth at any cost.
"The Roots of Disease: Connecting Denistry and Medicine" was written by two men. One of these men is a dentist and the other a cadiologist. For over a decade these two health care professionals have witnessed that the removal and complete healing of infected dental sites can often result in the total healing (or at least vast improvement) of other diseases in the body.
Have you ever been told that root canals harbor bacteria that infect the rest of your body causing diseae? That this is also true of sites where wisdom teeth have been improperly removed? I wasn't able to regain my health until my dental issues were dealt with. I no longer have a stressed out immune system and the constant candida albicans that this reulted in.
This well written, thorough look at the health problems affeted by oral infection is a must read for anyone interested in obtaining optimal health.
Dentistry's whiz kids write again.......2006-05-20
Tom Levy graduated from Johns Hopkins University, studied and taught medicine at Tulane, and then, to paraphrase his words, actually began to think about what he was doing.
This book, written together with Dr. Kulacz, a former instructor at NYU, is his critique of dentistry. When I brought it to the attention of my dentist, a great dentist in his own right, he was very grateful for the ideas in it, and agreed that Levy and Kulacz's contention that painkillers that contain noradrenalin retard wound healing, and that you have to manually curette (scrape) out the mess under bad root canals made absolute sense. Using a drill produces sufficient heat to kill more bone.)
Anyone with an inordinate interest in critiques of dental science - small crowd that we may be - does well to purchase this book.
Thank God for this book!.......2005-07-21
Thank God for this book and Dr.Kulacz! A M.D. from the Cleveland Clinic told me about Dr.Kulacz and this book. When reading this book about some of the other patients I thought I was reading about myself. This book is as truthful as it gets about root canals , dental materials and proper procedures about extractions. This book is a must read for the people that suspect that their teeth may be one of the culprits to their health issues. Of course after reading this book I would think most sensible people would not take drastic action as to extract their own teeth ,as one person posted. I would love to stand outside of every dentist office and pass out this book to patients that are about to get a root canal. This book opens your eyes to the other side of root canals that your dentist will not tell you before the procedure. By the way your natural teeth are not better if they are giving you pain and lowering your immune system. You must read this book if you are searching for the truth about your teeth problems. Dr.Kulacz has integrity and morals which is what you would expect from any doctor. If I could I would rate this book higher than a five.
Vital information for your health.......2004-11-12
I have not only read this book, but have also been a patient of Dr. Kulacz. Unfortunately, many detractors choose wishful thinking over verifiable, scientific fact. They pay for their ongoing denial with health troubles. Nobody wants to lose any teeth, but if the alternative is long term devastating health problems, the loss of a tooth is a small price to pay. I was in this category with both root canals and the related dental infections and they badly affected my health. Once removed I felt noticeably better. To further prove the case, the extracted tooth was sent to a lab for testing and the results confirmed serious infection. Study the subject and look at the evidnce and you will agree with me. Read all the related books as the evidence is overwhelming. Find one of the very few dentists around the country experienced in this protocol. PS, Most dentists know virtually nothing about any of this. It is therefore your health and your responsibility.
Provacative and inflammatory.......2004-05-07
It seems that after reading this book one would be inclined to take drastic action, like extracting thier OWN valuable teeth. Teeth need root canal treatment beacause they are infected in the first place. Most of the time, the infection is totally removed (85-95%). Yes there are instances where this infection is resolved, in which case extraction may be needed. Yes after extraction there may be bacteria left behind so what then....extract your whole jaw???? (did some one forget to mention that we have an immune system that has been dealing with bacteria, fungi and viruses for long before dentistry was around). Okay so our jaw is removed and some of the naturally occuring bacteris on our skin (yes our skin is not sterile) gets into the wound. Then what, ask for a decapitation? This seems to be the line of though given by the aurthor/s and it is totaly irrational.
Example 2. You get a scratch on your arm and yes bacteria get in, the skin heals over and traps the bacteria....what would the aurthor suggest...an amputation of your arm? Or doest he think he can pluck out microscopic bacteria (that are too small for see) with tweezers. Non-sense.
Our body parts are valuable, we have an immune system that fights bacteria and heals wounds/infections. We have marvelous doctors and dentists that can help the body beat these problems..so we can keep our body parts. Natural teeth are better that articfical anything.

Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-07-03
I ordered three face reading books to try to get as much information as I could. This book by far was the best. She adds a bunch of humor. This book is very well written and easy to read. I recommend this to all who are curious about what the face means. I am very pleased.
Useful and Insightful.......2005-12-10
After reading The Power of Face Reading, I am shocked by the response from "Almost Useless". In her book Rosetree asserts that we all have various challenges as well as styles with which we excell at, and I think Rosetree does an excellent job of expressing our different styles for work, spending money, communication, etc. with great compassion and depth. This is not a "too positive spin on every negative interpretation"; it's more a realistic way of looking at our strenghts and weaknesses.
I also firmly disagree with "Almost Useless"'s assertion that some of the interpretations are "just inaccurate." I have done many readings after reading the book, for friends and people that I've just met, and everyone remarks how surprisingly accurate they are! Rosetree also points out that the traits of our face reveal our propensity for a certain style of being. We are all human and can choose to behave in other ways as we choose. Knowing what are preferences are can help us use them with more strength, and to also gain understanding for the strengths and propensities of others. Brilliant for relationships!
In terms of "putting it all together" for doing face readings, I found this to be no problem. Like I said, I started doing readings for friends and new people I met right away. Rosetree also explicity states to set an intention to be of service, and begin with the features that strike you the most, and then notice what you notice next and go from there. This is what I've adhered to and what has made my readings so successful.
Lastly, I would be cautious with the review titled "Gems for Tabliod and Intellectuals." I might chuckle at these having not read the book. Rosetree's book provides much more depth than these quotes reveal. The book shows us that there are many ways to be in the world, and the beauty is that we can choose. I find it powerfully useful to know my style preferences at my very core.
The best of the best!.......2005-12-03
I know this book. I know this author. Rose Rosetree is a woman of the highest integrity and she is a great force. She's been on this path for many years, researching ancient studies and particularly refining the hidden traits found in faces. Each one of her books is a gift. But the wisdom contained in this one, The Power of Face Reading, showers the reader with clues and tips on discovering the very essence of, say, co-workers, first dates, celebrities, politicians -- any person with whom you might come face to face. For those with a sense of wonder and a hunger to know more, this is an easy read.
Amazing insights.......2005-12-02
I found this book, like all the ones I've read by Rose Rosetree, to be witty, insightful, and very useful. When reading this book, keep in mind that reading faces isn't just a formula, which is a point that Ms. Rosetree makes. The whole face needs to be considered, since it is a reflection of the soul as a whole. I use face reading often, and it's amazing how accurate it is. In addition to the companion book WRINKLES ARE GOD'S MAKEUP, I strongly suggest reading AURA READING THROUGH ALL YOUR SENSES. Combining aura reading with face reading is a very powerful tool and provides a far more complete picture.
Almost useless.......2005-05-02
The author tries so hard not to offend anybody, that she puts too positive spin on every possibly negative interpretation and overemphasizes what would already be considered as a positive one. Also, I found the most interpretations just inaccurate. Examples from nose chapter:
short nose - workaholic
long nose - talent for planning and strategy
straight nose - you work systematically
arched nose - creativity
...
Ok, of course you are supposed to interpret everything and put it all together, eliminating contradictions on the way, but the book falls short on instructions how to do that. There should be a chapter titled "putting it together" where the author should explain the process of face reading: what to look first? how to determine basic information about a person and go from there? Instead the book focuses on details without giving you the big picture.
