Book Description

A tale of counterterrorism from an author who "ranks with Graham Greene in his knowledge of espionage and the human heart" (Publishers Weekly).

Roger Ferris is one of the CIA's soldiers in the war on terrorism. He has come out of Iraq with a shattered leg and an intense mission—to penetrate the network of a master terrorist known only as "Suleiman." Ferris's plan for getting inside Suleiman's tent is inspired by a masterpiece of British intelligence during World War II: He prepares a body of lies, literally the corpse of an imaginary CIA officer who appears to have accomplished the impossible by recruiting an agent within the enemy's ranks.

This scheme binds friend and foe in a web of extraordinary subtlety and complexity, and when it begins to unravel, Ferris finds himself flying blind into a hurricane. His only hope is the urbane head of Jordan's intelligence service—a man who might be an Arab version of John le Carré's celebrated spy, George Smiley. But can Ferris trust him?

3 out of 5 stars Truth.......2007-10-04

The author feels that unvarnished truth can be found only in fiction. If so, our best are not bright enough. The twist at the end, the involvement of a particular character could, or should have been, seen a mile away. Why are so many heroes so easily seduced?

5 out of 5 stars his best ever.......2007-09-15

David Ignatius has written some great books but this is clearly his best. It is so up to date, taking you right in the center of the war on terror. I couldn't put it down. Though the book just came out this year, I was surprised to recently discover that they are already filming a movie of it, with Russell Crowe, up in Baltimore.

4 out of 5 stars Body of Lies.......2007-09-02

This truly an excellent read. The amount of details of the CIA and the relations with the Jordanian
authorities is very interesting and well done. He writes very well and is skillful with language.
The prose is pithy and moves along well. The ending is a bit stretched not in
length but in reasonable outcome. All in all a wonderful piece of work.

4 out of 5 stars A New Generation of Middle Eastern Spy Novels.......2007-08-30

I devoured Eric Ambler's middle eastern spy novels and have longed for a writer who captures the subleties of a region Americans understand very little. Ignatius uses his experience in the literal and metaphorical hot spots to illumine the values that underlie tradecraft. The CIA may think its personnel understands the region but, as in real life, the book demonstrates how much we need to learn. It's been noted that Ignatius is not as comfortable with describing and integrating personal relationships as he is with the plot twists and ambience. This may distract the reader a bit, but is easily overcome as the story climaxes. It's a satisfying read.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing groundbreaking here but a good read.......2007-08-25

This book held my attention to the end. I guess that's the best thing I can say about it. There are a handful of interesting insights in the book but nothing that will blow your mind. I was not surprised by the ending at all. This is a good beach book for mindless reading.

The beach house in New Hampshire which figured in Anita Shreve's The Pilot's Wife, Fortune's Rocks, and Sea Glass is once again featured in Body Surfing. This time, it is the summer home of the Edwards family, Anna and Mark and daughter Julie. Mrs. Edwards has great hopes for Julie, who is "slow," so she hires Sydney to tutor her, in preparation for her senior year. There are two older brothers, Jeff and Ben, whose arrival changes the household dynamic considerably.

Once again, Shreve revisits the minefield of love and betrayal that she has explored so well in her best novels. Sydney is 29, twice married, once divorced, and once a widow. She is floundering, not sure she wants to go back to school, accepting whatever job comes along and then moving on. She answers the ad for a tutor and finds herself in the Edwards household, where she discovers that Julie has undiscovered artistic talent. Mrs. Edwards dislikes her instantly, is dismissive, and treats her like a servant. Mr. Edwards befriends her, shows her his roses and talks to her about the history of the house, giving the reader a rundown of the role the house has played in prior novels.

Sydney, Jeff, and Ben go body surfing late one night and Sydney is sure that Ben has tried to grope her underwater. She takes immediate umbrage at this and treats him coldly thereafter. Shreve's other work has a steady narrative flow, but this novel is episodic and disjointed. There is the the arrival of Jeff's girlfriend, her departure, an evening when Julie comes home drunk and won't talk about it, and a liaison between Sydney and Jeff which leads to the complications that eventually define the novel. There is a twist at the end, involving the brothers, that is divisive, destructive and rather hard to believe.

While this is not Shreve's best effort, because the characters are not well-defined, it is worth reading her take on what happens to people when they compete for love. --Valerie Ryan

Book Description

At the age of 29, Sydney has already been once divorced and once widowed. Trying to regain her footing once again, she has answered an ad to tutor the teenage daughter of a well-to-do couple as they spend a sultry summer in their oceanfront New Hampshire cottage. But when the Edwards' two grown sons, Ben and Jeff, arrive at the beach house, Sydney finds herself caught up in a destructive web of old tensions and bitter divisions. As the brothers vie for her affections, the fragile existence Sydney has rebuilt for herself is threatened. With the subtle wit, lyrical language, and brilliant insight into the human heart that has led her to be called "an author at one with her m+tier" (Miami Herald), Shreve weaves a novel about marriage, family, and the supreme courage that it takes to love.

3 out of 5 stars Underblown.......2007-10-11

I have enjoyed many of Anita Shreve's novels. A reviewer once wrote, in describing another of Shreve's works (paraphrased)"..in a somber voice, Shreve leads us on". At the time I thought this was a wonderful description of Shreve's style and a testament to her artistry. That phrase also applies to this book, but only in the sense of describing the style. This book is written sparely, is indeed miserly, when it comes to character development and dialogue. The characters feel as if they have been neutered, turned into androids, and are reading every third line of a conversation. And yet, this is supposed to be a love story. I won't reprise the plot here, other reviewers have done that well. But as far as feeling for the characters; joy during their courtship, sadness when it comes, I was left untouched. I was tempted to count the number of sentences any character in this book speaks that has more than 6 words in it. Here is a brief example; (Sydney encounters an older woman whose husband has recently died), "Sydney guesses there are few normal meals now. She walks to the counter, "I'm so sorry" she says. "Why should you be sorry?" Mrs. Edwards asks, taking up a sponge and wiping the granite. Over Mrs. Edwards shoulder, Sydney can see through the window to the rose garden, or what is left of it." Then there is a description of the rose garden in decay. To have a genuine expression of sorrow met with such a rebuff would seem to call for some kind of response, discussion, feeling....but you won't find it here. Only a decaying rose garden. Perhaps this book was an experiment by Ms. Shreve. Perhaps in providing only the barest framework for this story, she wants the reader to supply the emotions, the full conversations, the happiness, all of the richness that makes a story unique. It left me feeling hollow and disappointed. It is not a terrible book, and if the choice is to read it/give it a pass, I would say to read it. But be forewarned, you are in for a clinical experience.

3 out of 5 stars A book that leaves questions unanswered.......2007-10-07

It's always a thrill to start reading a book by Anita Shreve. Her writing has a refreshing astringency, like tart lemon sherbet after one scoop too many of rocky road. Every sentence is weighted, and the reader joins the writer in observing and interpreting the action.

BODY SURFING is the story of Sydney Sklar, recently widowed, who is tutoring eighteen-year-old Julie Edwards at a beach house in New Hampshire. Julie's older brothers visit and sparks ignite between Sydney and Jeff.

Now comes the trouble with spare writing: the reader SEES the various love affairs unfolding, but they're hard to fathom. The chemistry has to be taken on faith. The drawing of a finger along a thigh inspires sensual longing? An underwater touch in the dark is received with intractable revulsion? A distant swimmer in a wetsuit arouses a young girl's first sexual passion? We know it because the author tells us so, but it's all a bit abstract. Lives are changed by these minimal encounters but the reader doesn't feel the heat; the plot seems somehow under-explained.

The characters, too, are described by their actions, with interpretation laid on. Somehow you know they're as complex as anyone else but the narrative doesn't quite do that complexity justice. We might wonder why Mrs. Edwards ever thought a summer of tutoring would get her "slow" daughter into a Seven Sisters college; how an architect never came to discover that his daughter is gifted with artistic talent; why neither of them ever noticed that she was a lesbian. And as for Sydney, she seems strong, smart and kind, is already twice-married, yet she can't spot a cad when she sees one and instantly agrees to marry him, apparently because of the thigh-stroking mentioned above.

There's nothing awful about this book; the writing itself is a treat, though maybe better suited to stories with a period setting like SEA GLASS or FORTUNE'S ROCKS. However it's not Anita Shreve's best. If you haven't read her, don't start here. But if you love her style, you'll probably find this book a passable read.

4 out of 5 stars A beach idyll.......2007-10-03

Twenty nine year old Sydney is employed by a family to tutor their backward 18 year old daughter in the hope of her gaining college admission. The girl's mother who treats Sydney as a servant, refuses to recognise that her daughter hasn't the mental ability to attend college and also is blind to the fact that the girl is stunningly beautiful and on the brink of a sexually active life. As Sydney has already been married twice, once divorced and once widowed, she is wary of the overtures made to her by the sons of the house when they come to the beach house for the summer, and takes an immediate dislike to the elder, as she is convinced that he groped her in the water while they were all swimming. She soon begins an intense love affair with the younger son which leads to very high drama and a complete change of life for her. It was a quick, pleasant read, written with Anita Shreve's usual style and one which her fans will enjoy immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Anita Shreve is a five star novelist!.......2007-09-11

Once again Anita Shreve brings you into the novel. Her writing is excellent. I always am anxiously awaiting the next novel....not soon enough for me. The characters in her novels become your friends or part of your family. What a gift Anita Shreve possesses.

2 out of 5 stars Love Anita Shreve, very disappointed though........2007-09-11

I have read every single one of Anita Shreve's books. I am a huge fan & was so happy when I heard she had a new book coming out. I was so disappointed, however. This had the potential to be great, but it flopped. The characters were not developed, the main character did not grow in any way throughout the book, and I felt the end was not the end. I felt that she just gave up at the end & wasn't sure where to take it, so didn't try. I kept expecting something horrific like someone dying as in the rest of her books.

All in all, she is still my favorite author, but I am so sad that this book didn't measure up to her other amazing work.

5 out of 5 stars Maravilloso!.......2007-08-29

3 out of 5 stars Deception.......2007-08-25

I had a deception with this novel and this author. I thought it was first of all more organized in his thoughts, second, the theme was not one that lead to any valuable thought or of value to society, except just an invention of his imagination, which seems very convoluted. I read the one he wrote about the coronel did not have any answer or something like that, and that one I liked. But I thought this was his best novel, and I was far wrong. Gloria

3 out of 5 stars An over-rated Nobel laureate.......2007-07-03

I read Spanish-language books to try to improve my Spanish vocabulary and reading ability. I had already read this author's "Putas tristes", and his autobiography, "Vivir para contarla". In the latter book García mentioned that he had read Romulo Gallegos when he was young. The latter's book, "Dóña Bárbara", which truly IS a classic of Latin American writing. I found García's book to have the same theme ("the struggle between landowners and peasants in L.A.), and even the style, to be essentially the same. Many other Latin authors, such as Isabel Allende, seem to also use the same plagiaristic ploy. Another thing annoying about García is his self-admitted tendency to employ outrageous exagerations with a straight face. In one episode of "Cien años" he describes a man so strong he carries a store counter from a store out into the street, and it too eleven men to get it back in. Come on now!!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books in a wonderful edition.......2007-07-01

I first read Cien años de soledad during my last year of high school, and I have read it several times again since then. Everytime I read it, I remember the words of my literature professor, after he asked us to buy the book: " I envy you all so much, so much - he said- because nothing compares to the feeling of reading Cien años for the first time. I wish I could feel like that again." He was right.

This is a magical book, and this anniversary edition one that deserves a place in the library of all those who love Gabo.

5 out of 5 stars One hundred years of pleasure.......2007-06-13

Book Description

Dr. Bill Brockton, the founder of the world-famous Body Farm, is hard at work on a troubling new case. A young man's battered body has been found in nearby Chattanooga, and it's up to the talented Dr. Brockton to assemble the pieces of the forensic puzzle. Brockton is brought into the case by the rising star of the state's mechanical examiners, Jess Carter.

Just as they're on the verge of breaking the case open, events take a terrifying turn. Brockton has re-created the Chattanooga death scene at the Body Farm, but a killer tampers with it in a shocking way: placing another corpse at the setting, confusing authorities and putting Brockton's career and life in jeopardy. Soon Brockton himself is accused of the horrific new crime, and the once-beloved professor becomes an outcast. As the net around him tightens, Brockton must use all of his forensic skills to prove his own innocence . . . before he ends up behind bars with some of the very killers he's helped to convict.

Flesh and Bone is another roller-coaster ride into the world of forensic anthropology, its twists and turns marked by drama and pathos, humor and grief, families and friends and enemies. With captivatingly real characters, plus fascinating scientific insights drawn from the case files of a living forensic legend, this astonishing novel confirms Jefferson Bass as one of our most talented authors of suspense.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One very good book........2007-08-09

First Sentence: The chain-link gate yowled like an angry tomcat in the watery light of dawn.

Forensic anthropologist Dr. Bill Brockton is helping state medical examiner, and his burgeoning love, Jess Carter with the case of a man's body found sexually mutilated, tied to a tree, and dressed in drag. He is also dealing with the suspension of this job after a lecture on evolution upsets a student who believes in creationism. When Brockton thinks things can't get worse, he is accused and arrested for murder.

There was a lot happening in this book and Jefferson Bass tied it all together into a gripping, interesting story. There was so much I liked about this book. Brockton isn't the classic macho protagonist; he's a bit unsure of himself, hesitant about a new relationship and able to cry. That he has been given interesting supporting characters adds balance and dimension to the story. Some may not care for the character's lecture on evolution, but I found it interesting and it is relevant to the story. The description of the protagonist's experience as a murder suspect provides a different aspect than one normally gets. Add to all this great dialogue, a strong sense of place and emotional tension, and the result is one very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful !!!.......2007-08-09

Jefferson Bass has done it again. He's got me hooked and I can't wait for his next book to appear. Keep'em coming Mr. Bass.
Wonderful...Wonderful...Wonderful

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Death.......2007-03-26

In their second effort, Jefferson Bass has put forth a fast paced novel again featuring Dr. Bill Brockton, forensic anthroplogist, college instructor and founder of the Body Farm. When Dr. Brockton begins to investigate the murder of an unknown male, the plot starts rolling. Assisted by Dr. Jess Carter, M.E. From Chattanooga, Brockton uncovers the victim's identity. As they dig deeper into the case, the stakes are raised and it is obvious that someone does not want the truth known. Somewhat predictable plot twist awaits the reader half way through the book, but all-in-all, a fast read.

5 out of 5 stars The Dynamic Duo is delving deeper into the realms of imagination.......2007-03-22

"Flesh and Blood" is the sequel to the writing team Jefferson Bass' first fictional work, "Carved in Bone." 'Jefferson Bass' is a pseudonym from Dr. William Bass, the famed forensic anthropologist and writer of "Death's Acre" (a non-fiction autobiography and excellent treatise on forensic anthropology) and Jon Jefferson, who worked with Dr. Bass producing "Death's Acre" and two National Geographic documentaries on the Body Farm.

"Flesh and Bone" takes up close to where its predecessor, "Carved in Bone" leaves off. Dr. Bill Brockton and his faithful GA assistant, Miranda, are setting up an experiment on the Body Farm. Their goal is to reproduce a gory murder of a young may they believe to be a hate crime against homosexuals. By reproducing the crime using a donated cadaver, they are hoping to clearly establish the time of death of a young man left hanging in a tree dressed in drag paraphenalia and brutally mutilated.

As the story goes on, Dr. Brockton and Dr. Jess Carter, the Chattanooga, TN Medical Examiner, are getting much closer. It looks like Dr. Brockton may stand a chance at love after 2 years missing his deceased wife.

Of course, not all things are going smoothly. A classroom lecture gone somewhat awry, ends up with Dr. Brockton having to defend himself against creationists, mirroring the infamous 'Scopes Monkey Trial' which happened only a few miles from Knoxville in Dayton, TN. Some would call this plotline 'unnecessary' but I think it's very timely and interesting--considering this week an East Coast teacher was fired under accusations of witchcraft--for teaching counter to the views of her principal.

But the situation decomposes much faster than the bodies--when the crime scene mockup is tampered with, Dr. Brockton is the prime suspect for murder. As the stories hurdles on, Brockton's job, family, even his life are all at stake.

"Flesh and Bone" is a fast-paced and very real look at the life of a forensic anthropologist. The only fault I can find with the book is that it's perhaps 'too real.' The commonalities between Dr. Brockton and Dr. William Bass are just too similar to be missed and in this reviewer's opinion, show some lack of imagination. Art Bohannon, the Knoxville Police Department fingerprint expert and childrens' advocate, is really Art Bohannon and names of people credited with helping the team in some way were only changed slightly--if at all.

"Carved in Bone" depicted a situation in an East TN county that was very similar to reality. "Flesh and Bone" did go a step further--taking real situations and bending them to work in the book.

In "Flesh and Bone" we look at the judicial system from the point of view of the Defense, which definitely is a twist from the noted criminalist's usual position. That showed imagination and a whole lot of research. Well done, gentlemen--I hope to see book three very soon.

4 out of 5 stars Getting Better All the Time.......2007-10-08

Volume 2 of Brian Wood's Vertigo series provides some insights into the civil war that's divided the country and explains how Manhattan morphed into "DMZ." The bullets and bombs still fly fast and furious, and journalist Matt Roth goes from reporting to the story to becoming the story. The artwork, by Riccardo Burchielli and fill-in artist Kristian Donaldson, is nothing short of amazing--one of the better pairings of writer and artist(s) in some time in the comics world. "Body of a Journalist" is better as a whole than the first collection, although I give both collections the thumbs-up.

4 out of 5 stars Almost As Good As Vol. 1.......2007-06-02

DMZ is an amazing comic and I'm so glad I got into it. As fun as read the 2nd set for DMZ: Body of A Journalist, it just didn't strike me the way the first one did. By no stretch of the imagination am I saying it was bad, far from it. I gobbled up every page with my eyes as quick as possible, and was left wanting more. I enjoyed meeting the odd group of people in the first Volume more, even though the story in the second seems a little more fleshed out.
If you like reading DMZ Vol. 1, DMZ Vol. 2 will satisfy you just fine.

3 out of 5 stars developing an arc.......2007-05-12

The second collection of DMZ continues with this excellent volume. Whilst the first volume focused on setting up the stage for our young protagonist, this volume fills in some of the character, and the DMZ world's back story. This volume is also more of a coherent and integrated story arc than the previous volume, with the whole volume focused on the kidnapping of a journalist in the DMZ. No, it's not our hero, but it some one we've met before.
Also included in this vloume is a extra section detailing the back story of Zee is very welcome, she's an excellent and complex character how deserves the screen time she's getting.

The continued parrellels with the American Military occupation of Iraq, and lifes (and deaths) of Journalists in that warzone, give this story a timely relevency.

5 out of 5 stars This series is highly excellent!.......2007-03-16

Volume 2 is, if anything, better than Volume 1. How this came to pass is beyond my reckoning, but let me just say that Brian Wood can WRITE and Riccardo Burchielli has a difficult name to spell. Also, he can DRAW. Seriously, these guys bring a richly detailed world to life with gritty violence, complex characters, and highly topical political issues.

The storylines in this particular book delve deeper into the governmental involvement in the DMZ and give us a brief glimpse of the Free States fighters. And if the violence doesn't turn you on, I guarantee you that there is sex. Not enough? Someone's head gets shot with a bullet. Deal with it!

This volume wraps up with a recap of the places and people of the DMZ - literally a travellers guide to a warzone. Well worth the wait.

Book Description

A fevered storyteller and a captive audience revisit the past in each of David Grossmans new novellas, trying to make sense of a betrayal that neither one can put to rest. In Frenzy, a reserved and respectable man draws his sister-in-law into a paranoid convictionthat his wife is having an affair. In the title novella, a successful but embittered novelist delivers a merciless account of her dying mothers love affair with a much younger teenage boy. Suffused with delirious tension and characters more substantial than in most novels twice its size(The Village Voice), Her Body Knows examines the anatomy of infidelity and desire.

5 out of 5 stars "Women's Literature"? Fiddlesticks!!!.......2006-12-11

This book, which drew me in from the start, and I read it slowly (in the original Hebrew), made me realise how ridiculous it is to talk about 'women's literature', as if only women writers can really understand women enough to write about them. David Grossman gets into the depths of the heart and souls of his protagonists almost better than any woman could, in both these novellas and in "Someone to run with" - you can literally feel all that they feel as you read. Magnificent!

4 out of 5 stars it's all in the passion.......2005-07-10

This is an engaging exploration of passion, the kind that can grab you and not let go. The two novellas each concern forms of passion that many of us would say verge on the pathological. Grossman sucks you in immediately, making the book hard to put down. The relationship between the mother and daughter in the second novella is especially stunning in its depth and depiction.

Although I mostly have high praise, I had some misgivings with this book. First the unfair criticism. David Grossman wrote probably the best book I have ever read ("See Under: Love"), and nothing I've read of his since comes close. Second, both novellas were structured in a way that almost felt manipulative, somewhat like a crime novel (think DaVinci Code) which you read voraciously to find out what happens. The first novella is a journey, a long car ride, and I was anxiously reading to find out what the obsessed and suspicious husband would do when he finally reached his wife and whether any physical intimacy would arise between him and the woman driving him. The second novella also had two such questions, whether the dying mother would make it to the end of the story and whether, decades earlier, she had had a sexual relationship with a teenage boy whom she was instructing in yoga.

Nevertheless, a middle-of-the-road effort by David Grossman may be one of the best fiction books you will read this year, especially if obsessive passion fascinates you.

5 out of 5 stars Under someone else's skin? In some one else's soul !.......2005-05-12

These are two other gems of novellas from David Grossman's ever haunting, amazing pen..... Drawn in from the first sentence, not just under the skin of his protagonists, but into their veins, travelling in their blood and cells to their very soul and beyond - that's the feeling I always get when reading his books - His imagery and vocabulary are gifts to the mind and I savor them long after my eyes have devoured them ---- read on, MacDuf !

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Preparation for National Novel Writing Month.......2007-09-29

*****
No Plot? No Problem! is written by Chris Baty, the founder of National Novel Writing Month, which takes place every November. During the month, people from all over the world unite over the Internet at NaNoWriMo.org and each writes their own 50,000 word novel (actually, a first draft) by writing 1,667 words per day.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to participate in the endeavor or not, because it sounded pretty overwhelming, but reading this book was truly the perfect preparation. It helped me to see what NaNoWriMo would be like, and gave me what I needed to decide if it was for me. (It is!)

If you are not thinking of joining NaNoWriMo, this book would be of limited usefulness for you, although it would be possible to use as a general writing guide---it's really all about NaNoWriMo. You find out what you need to do to get ready (including helpful exercises and equipment), what to expect during each of the four weeks, and most of all, motivation---why in the world would you want to do this? And how do you make it through? I found my answers in the book and they resonated with what my personal goals are.

It is written in a fun, sometimes hilarious style, and is very entertaining. Baty has recently written The No Plot? No Problem! Novel-Writing Kit, which I also ordered since I finished the book itself, because if it was half as helpful as the book it would be well worth it.

If you are reading this in the fall...hurry and buy and read this book as November is almost here!

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Not Like Other Writing Books - Which Is A GOOD Thing!.......2007-08-30

There are plenty of other well-written reviews here, so all I want to say is that after buying dozens of other books about the art and craft of writing, Baty got me to do something no one else had: WRITE A NOVEL! If anything, all of those other books (and there are some excellent ones) confused and intimidated me - and I've been writing professionally for decades. But Chris Baty magically took the pressure off, described how to approach the project in tasty, bitesized chunks and, miraculously, made it fun!

There are other books about technique which serious writers will do well to own. But this is the first and only book which somehow finally got me to do it. Not by pushing me, but by inviting me. Very highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars good... but the web site is better.......2007-08-25

The book does a nice job of going over the basics, but you get all the same information, and more, from the NaNoWriMo web site. I am a big fan of Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo yearly event, and I own this book and enjoyed reading it, but I think it is more for fans of the site than a required manual on how to get a rough draft of a short novel done in 30 days.

Certainly a quick, and enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars No Plot? No Problem...for a Rough Draft.......2007-07-13

This is a great book that works for some writers and not so much for others. Chris Baty's techniques are excellent advice for authors struggling to get their first drafts completed, although the timeline of 30 days is not "low-stress" as the cover states (I've found that 90 days is more appropriate for myself as a writer). First drafts are the largest hurdle to overcome, but are still just a piece of the puzzle: the real magic occurs during the rewriting stage. As fun as this book is, let's hope that Baty has a companion book on the revision process in the works.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Writers!.......2007-06-25

Chris Baty is the founder of National Novel Writing Month aka NaNoWriMo, which I've decided to try out this year. In preparation for doing so, I decided to read his book, No Plot? No Problem! A Low-Stress, High Velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days. That's exactly what NaNoWriMo is for those who are wondering: It's 30 days of non-stop novel writing madness. It starts on November 1st and ends on midnight, November 30th, with a goal of 50,000 words.

This book is excellent! I've been looking for a great book on writing and this one is superb. Though it's superb for a 30 day writing process...don't know if it's the right book for your typical novel writer, though it does have some great universal tips. This book is basically a guide for NaNoWriMo from someone who's obviously been through the process since he invented it. The first section of the book focuses on what you should expect, what you need to prepare yourself, selecting the right notebooks, selecting the right locations to write, selecting the right time to write, plot, characters, and basically how to survive during the process. The second section of the book is a week by week account of the writing process and you are supposed to read each chapter at the beginning of each week of the writing process (I obviously jumped ahead). The final section deals with what to do when the process is over and gives tips on rewrites, possibilities of publishing, etc.

I really enjoyed this book. Not only was it informative, but it was a fun read. Baty has a great writing style and totally entertained me. The book was right around 50,000 words so that the reader gets an idea of what a 50,000 word book looks like. Throughout the book there are quotes from past "winners" of NaNoWriMo so you're constantly getting input from others who have gone through the process and it sounds like a great experience.

Baty's main point here is that anyone can do NaNoWriMo and anyone can write a book. It just takes determination. The thing he stressed over and over again was "quantity not quality." Remember that the goal is 50,000 words in 30 days and that you're writing a rough draft. So just focus on getting to 50,000 words and rewrite later.

Great book for anyone looking for a little bit of motivation in the area of writing. I was considering participating in NaNoWriMo before, and I think that this book just about sealed the deal for me.

Book Description

Journey to the West is a classic Chinese mythological novel. It was written during the Ming Dynasty based on traditional folktales. Consisting of 100 chapters, this fantasy relates the adventures of a Tang Dynasty (618-907) priest Sanzang and his three disciples, Monkey, Pig and Friar Sand, as they travel west in search of Buddhist Sutra. The first seven chapters recount the birth of the Monkey King and his rebellion against Heaven. Then in chapters eight to twelve, we learn how Sanzang was born and why he is searching for the scriptures, as well as his preparations for the journey. The rest of the story describes how they vanquish demons and monsters, tramp over the Fiery Mountain, cross the Milky Way, and after overcoming many dangers, finally arrive at their destination - the Thunder Monastery in the Western Heaven - and find the Sutra.

Attached are a number of illustrations drawn during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-05-16

This is a great Chinese classic! I think that the translation is not too bad (given its history), and it would be fun to read aloud. I like how the books are divided, and the illustrations from the Qing dynasty are also fascinating. As for the content, I think it is probably widely known among people who study Chinese culture. The most lovable character is obviously Monkey, who will stop at nothing to protect his feeble Buddhist master the Tang priest Sanzang. Zhu the pig is also interesting as an incessantly loathsome character who specializes in overeating and over-indulging in just about everything. The only character I think could have been more developed was Friar Sand.. :(. The most predictable one was Quan Yin who always ends up saving Monkey for the first two books. Some great moments were: the manfruit, the false Western Heaven, and of course Monkey's bad behavior in the first 20 chapters of the book. Its a great read for any age.

5 out of 5 stars The Source of a Childhood Memory Found........2007-05-07

When I was younger, I saw first on TV and then later at a Kiddies Mattinee a movie "Alakazam, the Great". If fascinated me, and as I studied more and more mythology, I realized that it must have come from a mythic source, and I tried to find that source for over 30 years. Last Spring I found out it was part of this book by watching a made for TV movies, called "The Monkey King". Here was the story I had been searching to find in this movie named and that is when I began to look for this book.
True this book has pages that are so thin that they are like tissue, but they have beautiful illustrations and in these illustrations are the characters of Alakazam, though he is only known as Monkey here in this Chinese Buddhist tale of pilgamage, and the adventures along the way.
I am used to Western Mythology, Classical, Norse, and Celtic so this was a journey that had new meaning for me. And like the characters of this journey, it is a journey into a new and as yet source of spirituality that has much influence in the world.

5 out of 5 stars So much fun to read.......2007-03-17

While the story is long and can get repetitive at times, it is a classic. If you wish to undersatnd the culture of China in any way, you must be familiar with this story. Go Monkey!

4 out of 5 stars Achieve a state of childlike amusement on this humorous adventure..........2006-11-25

5 stars for the translation. 4 stars for the physical book quality.

Since other people have expounded on the plot, here is a review based on the physical book. The actual paperback novels are approximately 7" x 4.25," so easy to hold in your hand and tuck into a briefcase. The pages are a bit thin, not "Bible" thin, but they are a bit thinner than most paperback books. One of my volumes didn't hold up well to sitting in a steam-filled bathroom.

There are occasional pictures and sparse endnotes, but they do not detract from the story at all. The pictures were drawn during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and are done in the old chinese style, not some new-fangled doodles.

Some of the translation is a bit iffy, and sentences do not necessarily always make sense, but you'll understand it contextually. Some of the wording is extremely quaint, such as Pig complaining that the demons failed to drink "acuppa" with them. There is much more painfully British vernacular, but it just adds to the goofy charm of this book. Don't bother wringing your hands over the never-ending list of characters. Skim over them and read on. After all, there are an awful lot of demons and gods to meet on the journey, and quite a few of them are fated to die via Monkey's cudgel, making their characters irrelevant in the long-run. One thing I noticed is that there is an awful lot of scatological farce for a book written in the Ming dynasty (don't worry, it's still hilarious).

I've read a couple translations of Monkey King, and while they'll all stay in my personal library, this is the one I anticipate picking up again and again. I loved this book as a child and ten years later, I still do. A must-read for fans of mythology or Chinese literature in general.

4 out of 5 stars this book reads like water. . . . ........2006-10-02

although a great book, somewhat marred by a less than perfect translation (although let's give credit where credit is due, i would not have liked to edit this book) - this book reads somewhat like water. about two thousand pages of the narrative deals with the journey of Priest, Monkey, Pig and Friar Sand as they travel westward in search of the scriptures of the "Greater Vehicle" - the other three hundred pages deals with the birth of the Monkey King and his rebellion in heaven at the start of the book, and the end where they finally reach the Thunder Monastary on Vulture Peak in the Western Heaven a.k.a. Tibet.

pretty much the rest of the book deals with the trials and tribulations that these four monks (only three of which are fully developed characters: poor Friar Sand is left as the fifth wheel most of the time) go through in trying to 'fetch' these scriptures for the enlightenment of all humanity. the priest is a real ding-dong, he's constantly getting himself into all sorts of trouble, and he never heeds the Monkey King's advice about anything, so the Priest is always falling into the jaws of some new monster on virtually every chapter. the Pig is no better, as he would sooner run into trouble or create trouble for everyone else for the sake of either his pride or his stomach. the Monkey King is the real hero of this book, as he is constantly rescuing everyone from some sort of demon or tempting succubus around practically every corner. and what of Friar Sand? . . . well, he is just kind of there to guide the Priest's horse.

this book is definitely worth a read though, i thoroughly enjoyed it, despite its short comings. the incessant poetry gets kind of annoying though, most of it is relevant to the "plot" so you can't really skip too much of it. i give it four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Can't piece together until the end.......2007-07-30

This book was great! I could hardly put it down. I do have to admit it was a but too slow and confusing for the first few chapters, wasn't sure where she was taking it, but it was definitely worth the trip. The ending of the book makes all the mysteries make sense and you are on the edge of your seat just like Kay Scarpetta. Great read, very edgy, and extremely well thought out. All the puzzle pieces finally come together at the end making it a wonderful murder mystery.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Suspense !!.......2007-05-25

She is a wonderful writer! This book was my first and I have since ordered most of her collection. The book is so easy to get caught up in and forget to make dinner or not want to put it down til wee hours of the morning.

4 out of 5 stars Second just as gripping as the first.......2007-04-17

After reading Cornwell's first of the Scarpetta series I was eager to begin the next in the series, hopeful that this would be as good as the first. It was, Scarpetta continues to show her insight in revealing the stories her victim bodies tell, and little insight into human relationships.

5 out of 5 stars A +.......2006-12-19

Another terrific Cornwell novel. Holds your attention throughout the book. Even my "non-reader" husband loved it!

4 out of 5 stars Another Scarpetta climactic finish.......2006-08-11

The book offers Cornwell's well-known climactic finish where the reader may literally stop breathing toward the book's most hair-raising part...the delivery of the lost luggage! Unable to begin reading this book (took several starts and stops), after I was into it a few chapters, I was unable to then put it down. That was the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, as I just couldn't get into it during the 1st chapter, as most of Cornwell's other books. I recommend reading all of the Scarpetta novels beginning from the first in the series "Postmortem"; although if you don't, Cornwell does briefly describe people and events from Scarpetta's past so you aren't totally lost. I am ready to begin my 6th in the series and can barely wait to drive the 20 miles to my closest library to check it out!

"

On the campus of the University of Tennessee lies a patch of ground unlike any in the world. The ""Body Farm"" is a place where human corpses are left to the elements, and every manner of decay is fully explored -- for the sake of science and the cause of justice. The scientist who created the Body Farm has broken cold cases and revolutionized forensics, and now, in this heart-stopping novel, he spins an astonishing tale inspired by his own experiences.

A woman's corpse lies hidden in a cave in the mountains of East Tennessee. Undiscovered for thirty years, her body has been transformed by the cave's chemistry into a near-perfect mummy -- one that discloses an explosive secret to renowned anthropologist Bill Brockton. Dr. Brockton has spent his career surrounded by death and decay at the Body Farm, but even he is baffled by this case unfolding in a unique environment where nothing is quite what it seems.

The surreal setting is Cooke County, a remote mountain community that's clannish, insular, and distrustful of outsiders. The heartbreaking discovery of the young woman's corpse reopens old wounds and rekindles feuds dating back decades. The county's powerful and uncooperative sheriff and his inept deputy threaten to derail Brockton's investigation altogether. So do Brockton's other nemeses: his lingering guilt over the death of his wife, and the fury of a medical examiner whom Brockton dares to oppose in court.

2 out of 5 stars Carved in Bone.......2007-09-11

High expectation, low satisfaction. I didn't like this book and can't understand the 4,5 stars in customers review rating. I gave it 2 stars and tried my best not to stop reading it to the end. I didn't recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A caver who loves CSI.......2007-09-03

Reading that a woman's mummy-like body is found in a cave after 30 years is what grabbed me into buying this book. I love caving and CSI. I found this book with it's forenstics easy to read. I read it in a day and rarely read fiction. Simply, what I love is that Dr. Bill Bass is a real forensic anthropologist and it is based on his experience. The story telling makes it more enjoyable than a serious book would be. I was surprised and thrilled by the humor. I would love to see it in a movie. Especially since Hollywood these days, reverts over and over again to remakes.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, scarey, informative who-done-it.............2007-08-02

Carved in Bone is a ornately distinctive, fabulously thrilling, and a wonder voyage into the essence of forensic science. The book takes place in the center of the Appalachian Mountains, and the shadowy highways of the human mind. The authors do a fantastic job of traveling with their flamboyant characters, creating a gripping thriller full of twists and turns. This really is a magnificent read and I am hoping to pick up their other books, Death's Acre and Flesh and bone.

5 out of 5 stars Carved in Bone by Jefferson Bass.......2007-07-10

Dr. William Brockton is forensic anthropologist with the University of Tennessee and overseer of the Body Farm, made famous in Patricia Cornwell's bestselling novel of the same name. This installment of the Body Farm series finds Dr. Brockton called to Cooke County, Tennessee by Sheriff Tom Kitchings, where a woman's corpse lies mummified in a cave. When evidence of murder is revealed, Brockton, with the aid of Arthur Bohanan, criminalist with the Knoxville Police Department, embarks on his own investigation as to who killed the young woman and the unborn child she carried. Brockton soon finds himself stonewalled by the Sheriff and his deputies while someone is stealing evidence from his offices at U.T. The investigation leads Brockton and Bohanan into danger more than once, and forces Brockton to face the grief he has carried over the death of his wife two years earlier.

The name Jefferson Bass is a combination of two authors: Dr. Bill Bass, renowned forensic anthropologist with the University of Tennessee, and writer Jon Jefferson. Although Brockton is a fictional character based on Dr. Bass, Arthur Bohanan is a well-known criminalist, formerly with the Knoxville Police Department, and patented inventor of the process used to retrieve fingerprints from bodies and large objects.

Carved in Bone is a twisting mystery delivered in an informative style, with plenty of forensics relayed for those so interested. Brockton makes for an engaging character, with Southern roots and mannerisms, and his sidekick Bohanan is charming and witty. This mystery series' magical blend of storytelling with edification is sure to develop numerous fans and is one series this reviewer hopes will continue for years on end.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2007-07-09

I have read most of Cornwell and Reichs. This rates right up there and in some instances surpasses their brilliance in creating a scene that is believable and horrifically bone chilling. Spiced up a bit with some deadly humor in spots, I highly recommend this book if you are a Cornwell or Reichs fan.
