I can't say enough good things about this book!.......2007-09-24
This book helped me get through a very difficult time a while back. In the time since, I have occasionally felt the anxiety levels creep back up, and I have come back to this book. It isn't one to be read one time, but is worth reading again and again.
It is easy to have this book recommended to you, or even to have someone give it to you and leave it sitting on your shelf. I did that when I first received it. Don't do that! Read it and see if you can grow and glean from it as so many of us have done. It can really help you move beyond worry to trust, and it builts more than just anxiety-free living. It helps accomplish the opposite -- contentment and acceptance of your lot. If you struggle with worry or discontentment, this is the first book I would recommend. I can't say that enough!
Excellent.......2007-09-11
I couldn't imagine Linda writing a book more helpful than Creative Counter part, but this is the proof (for me at least). This book is applicable to the Christian woman no matter what stage of life she is in. I have found it to be encouraging and helpful in my growing relationship with Jesus. Thanks again Linda.
A great book for every woman........2007-09-06
My sister-in-law gave me this book. It's the best gift I've ever been given. I've bought several copies to give to women in my family and friends. The book addresses what peace we can have when we hand our concerns to God and learn to always be content. I wish I'd read this when I was young. It's a book to read several times as a great reminder to hand it all over to God.
Life Changing .......2007-07-14
I am an avid reader and rate this as one of the best books I've read in a long time. It is well written with inspiring stories from Eastern Europe to add illustrate the point of each chapter. More than just a good writer, Linda brings out the major obstacles to spiritual growth and what to do about each one. Since reading the book a few months ago I have seen changes in my life.
Good study........2007-07-12
This book was a good book, helpful. The title was definitely the subject matter, and it's one that is very necessary in our society today. Repetitive in a couple of chapters, but overall I recommend it.

Understanding, Reassurance, and Hope.......2007-03-27
Rose Sweet's book is one of the most helpful things I read after my own divorce became final. Since then I've become a family counselor specializing in divorce, so now I read many books on this topic. I continue to pick up Rose's book to read favorite passages again: she writes with a clear understanding of how divorce feels, and what to do about it. This excellent book will not disappoint you!

Easy Read and Not Deep Substance.......2006-11-05
Pretty general - easy to read. Not a lot of substance to help you discover what really went wrong. My suggestion is another book called "Rebuilding: When Your Relationship Ends" by Dr. Bruce Fisher and Dr. Robert Alberti. That book will help you address the tough issues that will help you move on with life in a healthy way.
Very Helpful.......2005-01-14
This book helped me so much. It is a comfort and a challenge. It explains all the things you go through with a divorce, even things you would not think of. It goes into things we hide from our own selves or just don't realize. One thing that is very touching and personal about this book is that at the begining of every chapter there is a love letter to you from God (based on scripture, of course) and at the end of every chapter is a comparison of what our fear tells us and what our faith tells us. This book truly can change your life if you are in the valley after a divorce (which most of us are). And the chapters are not long, so you can take it in little bits at a time, one issue at a time. This book is good even if you have been divorced for a long time. It shows you how to deal - in a Godly way and expresses God's love and forgiveness. I would recommend this book to anyone who is going through a divorce or has ever been through one.
Help for the Hurting and more!.......2001-09-01
Rose Sweet offers a smorsgasbord of insight to the issues that the recently divorced face. The topics of grief, rejection, anger, bitterness, depression, guilt, fear, and loneliness are explored through real-life examples and are also spiritually examined. Through a very engaging style of writing, Rose shares her journey and inspires you to journey with her to wholeness. I have already purchased several for gifts for friends who need this educational, inspirational, and motivational book. Kudos to Rose for being transparent and serving as a mentor for those who want to follow her footsteps toward healing the heartbreak of divorce!
Overcoming The "Heartbreak" My Review On Rose's Book.......2001-07-17
I have just finished reading "Healing the Heartbreak Of Divorce" by Rose Sweet. Being a divorcee myself, for 15 years now, I laughed, I cried, I sighed, and I was brought to awe by this wonderful, genius in writing of a book. Finally a book on divorce that is a must read instead of these ridiculous readings, "Divorce for Dumbells." I was brought back to a place in time that brought back all the memories of devastation, and heartache only to learn by reading this book, HOW FAR I HAVE COME! That is the gift that Rose Sweet gave to me in writing. Another gift given to me by reading this book, was a gift of spiritualism. Which I had lost and have now found. Chapter 14, "Understanding Why?' struck a nerve in me like no other nerve was ever stuck before in my life. Dealing with my own issues lately, before reading this book with my own "Why's" with God? This chapter hit me over the head! The giraffe story and the deserted island story, made it all so clear to me now, all of MY OWN "Why's" have now come to surface with peace of mind. I can now tell you all how soundly I slept after turning the last page of this incredible, INCREDIBLE, piece of work. Bravo to you Rose! Bravo to Us! The Brave and Noble ones who chose this path of serenity ~ Gina Wehmann ~

Great Book.......2006-11-24
I really enjoy this book because it really influences every part of a girl's life. You see, if you are ready for a book that challenges you in godly character in every part of your life, this is for you! I prefer books that cover a lot of ground!--and this is one of them. It is definitely an "All in One" book. I also appreciate how George wrote in many of the scriptures so you don't have to search around for a bible--makes it much more versatile--and you can feel like you can pick it up and start reading at any time. Very good. Blessings!

"Cool Mom's" review.......2005-12-09
I am reading through Woman After God's Own Heart, which I so wanted to share with my son's girlfriend, very new and unsure of her faith, with absolutely no spiritual support from her parents. But "Woman" is very mature and deals with women more my age. I saw "Young Woman" here when I ordered another copy of "Woman" for a close friend. I'm excited about the book... I know some of these teens reviews are mixed, and one actually very harsh. I will say this to the young ladies out there... it IS possible to live purely and holy before God as a teen. I did it with peer pressure and all... I saved myself for marriage and have had a wonderful life. It was not and still is not always easy - even adults have peer pressure. My husband and I talk to our kids about EVERYTHING and don't "flowerize" anything. It is hard out there - but God requires integrity from us. Remember, Elizabeth George was a teen at one time and she raised teen daughters... the way she speaks is out of a heart of love for you and for the Kingdom of God. Philippians 4:8 says Whatever things are pure, true, just, lovely and of good report with VIRTUE and PRAISE - think on THOSE things. When I read the book with my daughter I'll come back to give my final opinion. Blessings!
Too rosy for me.......2005-12-07
The purpose of the book and the message is nice, but George's advice of how teenage girls should behave gave me the impression she expects them to be sweet, spotless little angels. Sorry, but we all know that's not possible, no matter how much some parents wish it is. George seems to have forgotten this fact, even though she herself had tough teen years and an obnoxious stage (hey, we all did!). I've been a Christian all my life and was never an out of control teenager, but when my own dear mother gave me this book, I could tell after just a few pages that it was not going to work for me. In fact, George's tone was so conservative, I nearly swore off Christian guidebooks forever. Don't get me wrong; it's not a bad book altogether and the messages about God's love were very uplifting. Unfortunetly, a lot of her advice on how to be a "proper" Christian girl was unrealistic.
The most startling part of the book was when she shared the dating rules her husband placed for their own daughters: No dating whatsoever until after high school. Once out of high school, they STILL couldn't date unless the boy asked the father first (this included long distance calls if necessary, even if the "date" consisted of nothing more than going out to get a coke!) This long-distance thing seems to imply that the girls weren't living at home anymore, and yet he still ran their social lives? Call me a hoodlum, but that's controlling, not protecting; we're talking about girls who were legally adults here. I half expected George to say that her husband also picked out his daughters' spouses for them. She almost gave the impression that her husband didn't trust their daughter's judgement.
Please don't get the wrong impression; I believe strongly that teens should be taught about Christ, I just don't think George did the best job of it in this case. She's not a bad writer, but she doesn't appear to realize that most people wouldn't appreciate reading a whole book written with a gently patronizing tone that seems more fit for small children than young adults. Try to keep in mind that being Christian alone doesn't qualify someone as a good adviser and just because some of you moms like George doesn't mean your daughters will. No matter how sweet George may be, she doesn't appear to understand modern teenagers enough and teens should not be advised by someone who doesn't understand them. For a more realistic view of teen life, I recommend "Teen Ink", any of the wonderful "Chicken Soup" books, "Queen Bees and Wannabes" (if you're a parent trying to help your daughter with teen issues), or the awesome "Chocolate for the Teen's Dreams". Blessings on your journey with Christ!
Book Description
Whether or not you know or even understand it, you are living a life of faith. Perhaps not the conventional, Christian ideal of faith, but faith nonetheless. You flip the light switch and have faith that the light will come on. You turn the key and expect the engine to start. But what about the big things in life? Do you have faith that you'll remain healthy? Faith that your children will be safe from violence? We all face situations that we cannot control. All we can do is trust-and have faith-that God will see us through.
Rather than a complicated, theological enigma, Sheila Walsh explains that faith is a simple, life-giving gift God offers His children. And since it is a gift, He expects us to share it-to give it away. By sharing biblical and modern examples of women of faith, Sheila opens our eyes to the extravagant gift God has for each of us.
Customer Reviews:
What a journey Sheila takes you on!.......2005-11-02
Sheila's heart, honesty and love for God shine through the pages of this book. You feel like she's sitting down to coffee with you and sharing how God has worked in her life, how He has taken her on a journey of faith. She brings great Biblical insights, but doesn't pretend to have all of life's answers. Refreshing! I was actually sad when I finished this book. I wanted to continue the coffee chat. I'm buying several for Christmas presents!

Excellent, truly Christian way to handle anxiety.......2006-11-15
There is a lot of fluff and junk out in the Christian publishing world and I have read too much of it. This, however, is a well written, Biblical and truly helpful book for those who suffer from fear, worry and anxiety. I have recommended it many times and donated it to my local church library.

This is the true story of a young American missionary woman courage and triump of faith in the jungles of New Guinea and her four years in a notorious Japanese prison camp. Never to see her husband again, she was forced to sign a confession to a crime she did not commit and face the executioner's sword, only to be miraculously spared.

Missionary Biography.......2007-09-17
This is the best missionary story of God's faithfulness that I've ever read. I recommend it to everyone.
Evidence Not Seen is Must Reading.......2007-09-15
This book tells the story of Darlene Deibler's incredible survival during almost four years in a World War 2 Japanese prison camp. But more than that, it tells the story of incredible faith that blossomed and bloomed under the most horrendous conditions. When faced with pain, illness and even the death of her husband, Darlene sensed the Presence of God in a way that enabled her to go on and to survive without bitterness for her captors or for God.
I loved the drama of how Darlene at first spurned the attention of the man who fell in love with her and felt sure she was destined to become his wife and missionary partner. It didn't take long for her to return the feelings, and off they went, expecting a long and fruitful ministry in the East Indies. They landed in Java on their first wedding anniversary.
But I hated how the tentacles of war ripped the Deiblers apart and landed them in different camps. Darlene, who served as a barracks leader and nurse, suffered herself and nursed the wounds of others who were abused. Many, Darlene included, were left weak and thin by beriberi, malaria and dysentery. However, as she cared for fellow prisoners physically, Darlene inspired them spiritually by establishing a daily time in the barracks to read the Bible and pray. And no matter what daily heartaches she endured, God whispered encouragement to her heart through memorized scripture and hymns.
Evidence Not Seen will bolster your faith and assure you that God is real and present in every experience of life.
The transforming power of God.......2007-08-29
Evidence Not Seen: A Woman's Miraculous Faith in the Jungles of World War II - by Darlene Deibler Rose. Published by HarperSanFrancisco in 1988
This is the most powerful Christian book I have ever read. My introduction came in a friend's letter. She mentioned this "inspiring and challenging" book and said about it; "Oh, to love Jesus like that!" I ordered a copy immediately and have ordered many more to give to friends.
Four years spent in a POW camp in the jungles of Indonesia don't make for comfortable reading. After you lend it or recommend it you hope that the other person can stand to read the awful details of deprivations and hardships endured in such a location. Food was always scarce and insufficient, but somehow they coped.
Darlene Deibler only had a few years of married life before she and her husband were separated and confined in different camps. Russell Deibler did not survive. Darlene became a very young widow. She had been gifted with such a cheerful spirit and leadership qualities that she was chosen to be the leader of one of the women's barracks at the camp. Her enthusiastic Christian spirit brought solace to many around her.
So this is the kind of book which could change your life. Certainly life will never be quite the same.
Before war interfered that small group of missionaries, were preparing, some of them, to bring the Good News to the primitive tribes in the vast interior of New Guinea. This would have been only 70 years since earlier missionaries had discovered that the people they were planning to work amongst had a culture of cannibalism. This was "hardship" missions in every way: isolated territory, no medical resources, difficult terrain and climate. Their faith had to be strong. The prison camp experience was a traumatic testing ground of that faith.
You sense the gift of love for those New Guinea tribesmen. After the war the mission work resumed and Darlene returned as Darlene Deibler Rose. You may ask if this kind of mission work had any noticeable results. Consider this news story which came to our attention just as I was preparing this review.
The Papua New Guinea tribesmen wanted to apologize publicly for their ancestors having cannibalized Methodist missionaries 129 years ago. What a thrill then to read: "Thousands of villagers attended the apology ceremony in East New Britain province and listened to words of praise for the English missionary who had brought the Gospel to their region. The apologetic Papuans, led by the Governor General of Papua New Guinea, offered their apologies to the High Commissioner of Fiji. Four Fijian missionaries, under the command of Rev. George Brown of the London-based Wesleyan Missionary Society, had been slain and eaten in 1878 by Tolai tribesmen, directed by their warrior chief Taleli. "We at this juncture are deeply touched and wish you the greatest joy of forgiveness as we finally end this record disagreement," Fijian High Commissioner Ratu Isoa Tikoca told the apologetic tribesmen at the August ceremony. Fiji itself had practiced cannibalism but gave up their meal habits under the influence of earlier missionary efforts.
The power of God so evident in Darlene's life story is evident on a larger scale in the new nation of New Guinea.
Read Darlene's story and let the Lord work in your life.
Great Book!!!.......2007-08-09
Great book. I wanted this book after hearing about it on an online radio broadcast of this woman's story. Fantastic. Great book, I could hardly put it down.
My Favorite Book about Missions.......2007-08-01
I've read this book a number of times. I love that it is a women's perspective on missions and the real struggles a women has. It has been so inspiring to me as a youth and now as an adult. I highly recommend this book.

Beautifully written, poetic and thought provoking. Though it is geared toward a woman's perspective, I connected with Jan's message and found myself longing for more of God.
This book will lead you to keep your heart open.......2004-05-17
A must read for women in their 20's, 30's or 40's. Jan calls us to keep our hearts open in the deepest diappointment. Book studies on this book are popping up in all sorts of place, at my church, within christian ministries etc...A book that finally speaks to the true heart of a woman..
touching and inspiring.......2004-01-08
I found this book rather randomly one day while I was shopping for a gift. I searched for John Elderidge's book, Wild At Heart, and bought it for a growing Christian friend. Under recommended titles, I saw The Allure of Hope by Jan Meyers. Having read Wild at Heart, I had been wanting something similar that addressed the issues faced in a woman's life rather than a man's. John Elderidge actually wrote the introduction to this book and recommended it highly. So, respecting him as an author, I bought a copy.
I absolutely loved it and I have since given away copies to friends and family alike. I felt like it was relevant to events in my life and helped me to work through some problems that I have encountered as a developing Christian. Many Christian books that address lifestyles and relationships with God seem "preachy" to me, and I have a difficult time getting into them. I also feel like they dwell too heavily on discipline and abstinance, neglecting the source of discontent that leads people astray. Jan Meyers, however, does an excellent job by speaking to the reader as a peer. Her voice sounds like that of a friend and it conveys a sense of pain that she is experiencing and working through, much like her audience. Her writing, while it may lack the eloquence and development of John Elderidge, is powerful nonetheless because of its honesty, tenderness, and warmth.
This book is an excellent read for any woman searching for a closer and purer relationship with God. I plan on using it in a Bible study I am leading later this year.
A must read for all women!.......2003-04-08
I have read many books on Christian women's issues, and this is by far the best! In contrast to most Christian books for women on the market, it's not about how much harder we women need to try, or what we're doing wrong, but it's about how much God loves us and desires intimacy with us and how important our hearts are on this journey toward Him. Her writing is visionary and mystical while remaining firmly grounded in the Christian faith. This book has awakened my heart in a powerful way. It has given me vision and helped me to relax in God's love for me. If you liked any of the John Eldredge books, this one is a must!
Finally.......2002-12-21
Finally, a book for women that doesn't pressure or cheerlead us, but speaks the language of the real woman. This book is not just for people who have gone through tragedy - it speaks to the ache in every woman. I highly recommend this book.

What a Testimony, Stanice!!!!.......2006-11-03
I Say a Prayer for Me was an excellent book. I had actually purchased it locally about 2 years ago and had not gotten around to reading it until we were deciding which book to read next in by Sisterhood Ministries group. I suggested this book, and everyone including myself, could not believe what a great book it was. To read about Stanice's life and her struggles with what God would have her to do, was true testimony of how Faith can turn your life around. After we finished the book, I ordered additional copies from Amazon and gave them to my sisters as gifts, and they also raved about how good this book was and have since purchased additional copies and given them to their friends. Great work, Stanice!!!!
Just AWESOME!.......2005-10-11
Whew, what can one say after reading this book!?! To read this woman's stories of what she experienced and to see her now; only God can create such a transformation in one's life. I laughed and I cried as I read through the chapters. Some reminded me of my own experiences. This is a MUST read! If you are in need of any type of healing, it will definitely take place in the pages of this book.

This book was an inspiration.......2004-06-17
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Her life is an inspiration. She taught me to consider God in all things no matter how small I may think it is. Her story of her California trip was great and really taught me to witness to anyone and everyone. This was my selection for my bookclub and I was the toast of the day. We all enjoyed this one.
This book is for everyone!!!.......2004-06-07
Not only was this book written as a testimony to show how GOD navigates our lives to help us know that we are loved it also shows that with faith all things are possible. This book is not only for those with drug or alcohol addictions but it is for those of us who suffer addictions of all kinds, it is for those of us who don't believe in ourselves, for those who have experienced hurt and also dished hurt out towards others. The lord spoke to me personally thru his vessel Stanice. Thank you for allowing your loving and gentle kindness to flow from this wonderful women who has allowed you to use her. I am and will always be in loving awe of your unconditional love.

Great for Women's Small Groups.......2007-01-29
As a women's small group leader, I love E George's study guides. They combine the benefits of a true Bible Study with the application of a women's concept study. Too bad she doesn't have guides on ALL of the books of the Bible!
Excellent for group or individual Bible study.......2006-12-23
I recently led a women's Bible study on James using this book and it was very well received. The content does not dig deep into theology, but is a very basic study on the book of James with excellent application of his teaching into your own personal life. We easily covered about four chapters each week. It does not have daily lessons, so it is up to the individual to set his or her own pace. It is written for women, but men could also benefit from this study.
