Book Description

The Christian Writers’ Market Guide has long been considered an indispensable resource for Christian writers. The only guide written exclusively for this specialized market, it provides the most up-to-date marketing resource information available to beginning and advanced writers, full-time freelancers, agents, editors, publishers, publicists, and all others interested in, or involved with, Christian writing.

The 2003 edition of this guide includes more than 1,200 potential markets (along with all the information needed to contact them), and tells writers exactly what publishers are interested in what topics or types of books, articles, or stories.

In addition to the market listings, The Christian Writers’ Market Guide 2003 is filled with unlimited resources to make the writer’s life easier and more focused: lists of greeting card/specialty markets; agents; writers’ conferences and groups; editorial services; contests; market analysis (book publishers and periodicals); a listing of publishers and publications by denomination or corporate group; publishers’ e-mail and Web sites; and a wide range of resources for writers–many available online. This guide has become–and will continue to be–a familiar friend to all those involved in the creation, development, publishing, and promotion of Christian writing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2003-09-10

This is the best market guide I have found. Even better than the Writer's Market Guide. It is filled with useful resources for writers such as literary agents, writing conferences, contests for writers, writer's groups, web resources, etc. It's definately worth the money. Updated yearly. The author is very knowledgeable. A must for any writer even if your focus of writing is not Christian writing.

5 out of 5 stars All Writers Should Purchase.......2003-07-28

I simply believe all Christian writers should purchase a copy of this book each year if they are truly interested in publishing in the Christian market. To my knowledge, there is no better book for the purpose of learning about and knowing the current market than this one.

Stuart does a remarkable job of keeping up with this ever-growing and changing field!

A MUST BUY!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Must Own Resource for Christian Writers!.......2003-06-21

Now there is someone who has made available and information resource for Christian Writers. Sally E. Stuart has compiled the comprehensive 'Christian Writers' Market Guide 2003' with all types of Christian publishing information. There is a large Christian market than one may expect and Stuart has researched this one well. You can only imagine the number of these markets are in access. I've added this to my much used and needed Writer's Resource shelf along with the 'Writer's Market' and 'The Writer's Handbook.' No Christian Writer should be without this valuable up-to-date marketing resource book.

This can be used by the first-time writer or the publishing veteran. It's essential if you're wanting to get published in the Christian community. The contents in it's pages is al you'll need from any resource. This reference tool is completely updated and revised with 1,138 publishing markets, 379 book publishers, 678 periodicals, 81 specialty markets (greeting cards, video, CD and gifts) and so on. There's much more from agents and foreign markets to internet markets to contest. There's additional resources for book promotion, submission guidelines, writers' conferences, workshops and groups. All this makes this the most complete and accurate resource of any kind. I've contacted at least three resources with good success. If you want to get your work published in the Christian market this is the book!

NOTE: An important rule mentioned in the book, DO NOT Rely Soley on the Information Provided in this Market Guide. It not intended to be complete by itself. It's important for your success as a writer that you learn how to use writer's guidelines and study book catalogs or sample copies before submitting to any publisher.

5 out of 5 stars Best Guide for Christian Writers.......2002-04-30

"Christian Writers' Market Guide 2002: The Reference Tool for the Christian Writer" is still the best market guide for anyone writing for the Christian market. Any writer committed to being published needs this book.

Similar the better known guides published by Writers Digest, Sally Stuart has compiled, organized and analyzed the various publishers and publications serving Christian readers. By "Christian," she includes protestant and Catholics, mainline and nondenominational publishers.

The Writers Digest guides simply do not have the depth and breadth of Christian publishers. You need the WD guides, but you need this as well.

You'll find entries for smaller, but important publications, like "World Pulse," the missions newsletter, as well as "Decision," a widely circulated magazine published by the Billy Graham people. You'll see also, "Our Sunday Visitor," "Commonweal" and "My Friend" (for Catholic kids). Any publisher you see in your church library is here, plus hundreds you might be new to. You'll see addresses, e-mail and website information, description of the publication, how much they pay, and what kinds of articles, poems and books they like to see.

I can vouch for the efficacy of this book, as through this guide I sold several poems.

Buying a new edition each year is necessary, as the information changes from year to year. Publishers move, editors move to new jobs, and publications might go out of business. The serious writer needs to keep up-to-date. With Stuart's book, updated annually, you can.

The continual frustration about this otherwise extremely useful book is the lack of a CD version. I would love to be able to sort through it all, and isolate those publishers who pay for poetry. It is cross-referenced, so you can see who is publishing environmental, evangelistic, eschatology, humor, romance--you name it.

She also has topical guide listings here for publishers of books, subsidy books, general markets, literary agents, contest, children's, conferences, pastors, and much more.

I fully recommend "Christian Writers' Market Guide 2002: The Reference Tool for the Christian Writer" by Sally Stuart."

4 out of 5 stars Great overview of Christian publishers.......2002-04-18

This is a great resource for Christian writers who want to publish a book of a generic nature, such as a novel, or general non-fiction work. For someone who is writing from a specific theological base, a better recourse might be searching the web. If, however, a writer has singled out a few particular publishers as targets, and if they are listed in this book (as they probably are), the "Christian Writers' Market Guide" is a must.

4 out of 5 stars No Articles For Illustrators.......2002-12-11

This book is a must have for anyone serious about entering or continuing in this market. It contains all the most up-to-date submission information direct from the publishers themselves. My only complaint, and its a big one, is that they seemed to forget about us illustrators when compiling the articles. How disappointing. It's tough enough for us that the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators requires us to pay the same membership fees and conference fees while dedicating only a fraction of their offerings (workshops and articles in newsletters) to the illustrators. Now Reader's Digest Books (the publisher of this book) is following suit.

5 out of 5 stars A Must if You're a Children's Writer or Illustrator.......2002-11-26

Find out what to do before your first sale. How to negotiate a contract. Protect your rights. Pay your taxes as a writer.

And that's just the first 20 pages.

The "2003 Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market" contains close to 400 pages of children's publishers, agents and magazines looking for your work. If you write children's literature or you're an illustrator for children's books, this yearly guide contains more than 800 potential markets for you to get your work in print.

Each listing shows contact names, addresses, Web sites, phone numbers, submission guidelines, pay rates and more. A majority of publishers also share tips on how you can increase your manuscript's chances of being accepted within their publishing house.

You'll also find articles on critique groups, picture books structure, promotion, creating stories, how to write for children and more. And on the other side of the publishing fence, you'll find insider reports from top illustrators, novelists, editors and publishers, all geared toward the children's writer. Plus, greeting card opportunities, play publishers, clubs, organizations, contests, awards and grants are all covered as well. There's even a special section for agents representing children's authors.

Every year Writer's Digest Books updates their annual guides. Even if you have last year's "Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market," you need the current edition. With market needs constantly changing as well as contact names, you need the most up-to-date information to increase your chances of getting published. No other guide increases those chances more.

4 out of 5 stars Quite simply, the Writer's Bible.......2003-11-30

You must own this if you write fiction. I'm sorry, but, no, there is no getting out of it. You cannot check the copy out of the library. No, you can't use LAST year's copy. Buck up and buy the thing! This is THE reference full of places to submit... but that's NOT all. It will also tell you which markets pay, which markets only accept agented work, what percentage of their published pieces are from first-timers, and give you valuable contact information. There really isn't much more this book could do for the writer, shy of sending in your submissions for you! If you don't have it, GET IT!

      4 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2003-07-09

Short and sweet: Regarding the "Novel & Short Story Writer's Market" - I used contacts from the 2001 book and sold 3 stories. I used contacts from the 2002 book and sold 5 stories. I am buying 2003 now. Sure, rejections abound regardless but, don't dwell on "sour grapes". Use the contacts enough and you will succeed!!! This is a good resource.

2 out of 5 stars Why Waste Your Time?.......2003-04-11

The Writer's Market is a rather absurd principle in today's world of fiction writing and publishing. Sure, there are many, many names and addresses in this resource and it is a well-organized, fundamentally sound reference. But the real deal is, no one is going to pay any attention to whatever you send them, so don't waste your valuable time and money. How many query letters, dear writer, have you received, returned from an agent or publisher? How many have you written? How much money have you blown on stamps? Can you paper the walls with the return mail? Of course you can. Does that mean your stuff stinks? No. It only means that no one actually reads anything you sent; they have a junior intern opening their mail, putting your query letter back in your SASE and mailing it back. There you go, seventy cents down the drain right there. And how much time did that cost you? Plenty. My advice is to take a different route. There are ways to get your stuff published without having to go through the brick wall of the current agent/editor/publisher relationship. It is a terrible situation for which this book has no answer, except in a very brief, but informative article on Print-On-Demand (POD). Don't bother any more with this stuff. You're going to have to do it yourself anyway, as the blurbs in the smaller publishing houses clearly state. They all say that since we are a small publisher/printer, we expect the writer to market his own book- it's in their contracts. And the big houses (Random House, Simon and Schuster) aren't taking any more writers unless you know somebody who knows somebody who was at a cocktail party they went to once. That's the truth, I'm afraid. A sad state of affairs, but it is nonetheless the reality. Best of luck to you- but my advice is to think outside the box; you're beating your head against a wall.

      4 out of 5 stars A Companion in research........2003-02-04

For those that rely on this book alone, you have an IN, but are OUT as well. The publishing world is not static and by the time this book is released each year, businesses go under and contact info changes. I'm not going to give you an "end all be all" lie about this book, however, it is a MUST companion.

Let's take out the NOVEL word on the book, ok? Well, then again if you are a one-time only novelist and that's as far as you want to go, leave it in.

The book is more useful to freelance writers and story writers than to the novelist. I know that's a debateable point, but it has held true to me for the last 3 years. To get your work in print this is a basis and has a wealth of knowledge that isn't found in too many areas, however, keeping up-to-date with the current submission guidelines and websites of the publishers is your responsiblity. Use this book as a companion and you may open up a far bigger world for your writing than you have ever imagined.

Novelists can use this too. My only point with that is the Writers Market and Guide to Literary Agents would be a more logical choice for the novelist.

5 out of 5 stars Pay Rates, Contact Info, Submission Guidelines & More.......2002-12-06

Fiction writers rejoice! The new edition of the "Novel and Short Story Writer's Market" is on the market and better than ever.

Inside you'll find close to 700 pages of valuable tools for fiction writers. In addition to the hundreds of pages of market listings, there's also writing contest information, conference details and articles from industry insiders.

The articles tackle such topics as what happens after a contract is signed, query letters and the business of fiction writing. Alternative publishing avenues such as electronic publishing and print on demand are also explored.

      Sections of this guide include:

      * Personal Views - A collection of articles featuring some of today's top authors and their insight on writing.

      * Craft & Technique - How-to instruction on novel beginnings, subject matter and more.

      * Electronic Publishing - Information on the new venture many authors are taking, plus print on demand pros and cons.

      * For Mystery Writers - Key resources for mystery writers regarding rejection, defining space and a mystery market directory.

      * For Romance Writers - Writing for urban women, categorizing your romance projects and emotions within your fiction.

      * For Science Fiction/Fantasy & Horror Writers - Essentials for getting the most out of these three genres as well as a market directory.

      * The Markets - Literary agent listings and insider reports on agents.

      * Resources - Writing programs, conferences, organizations, info for Canadian writers and a dictionary of printing and production terms.

This guide is an absolute must for fiction writers wanting to see their work in print. Even if you have a previous year's edition, you must get the current year to be ahead of the publishing game. With contact information, market needs and pay rates changing, the current year edition is the only way to get your foot in a publisher's door.

No matter what type of fiction you write, the "2003 Novel and Short Story Writer's Market" is an excellent investment in your writing career.

4 out of 5 stars Selling Your Writing On- Line.......2006-02-01

Writer's Market On- Line Guide is an extensive resource for writers and one can easily become overwhelmed with such an exhaustive guide like this. It's mostly reference tools, with the bulk of the book dedicated to information from actual publishers, agents, and magazines. Only the first few sections, before the publishers, contain actual reading material. But it's all arranged very nicely and it includes very helpful facts for the aspiring author.

I like the sample form letters in the Query Letter Clinic. It's one thing to explain what works and what doesn't, but it's even more helpful to be able to visualize actual letters that are "good" and "bad". The contributors of this guide explain exactly what publishers look for when they review a manuscript and they give tips on common mistakes to avoid.

I spent most of my time thumbing through the publisher's reference section of this book. I was surprised at the number of publications, particularly magazines, that devote a substantial portion of their publication to freelance writers. With each listing, Writer's Guide shows the percentage of the magazine that is comprised of freelance writing, so that you can gauge your odds of getting published. Some are high, others are low. For example, Motor Trend Magazine contains only 5 to 10% freelance- written material, but the payoff for a published article can be as high as several hundred dollars. Entrepreneur Magazine, on the other hand, includes 60 percent freelance material. The payout is slightly less, but the higher level of freelance writing means that your individual odds of getting published are greater.

Writer's Guide includes a few postcards that can be removed to buy more products (like a magazine subscription to Writer's Digest), to send for free material from the Writer's Digest School, and to buy more Writer's Guides, like the Children's Writers Guide, The Literary Agent Guide, Novel and Short Story Writer's Market Guide, and a few others. There are countless listings of resources to access, including online and others.

One thing to note about this guide is that the title is a little misleading. While it does contain information on getting published by utilizing the internet, this is really only a small fraction of the guide. It actually contains information on all sorts of ways to get published, including phone and fax numbers to contact publishers directly.

Overall, this is a very good guide to writing and getting published. A little bit more personal reading would have been nice (there are only about 90 pages of actual reading material) but the reference sections are invaluable to the aspiring writer. If you have ever considered selling your personal writing, then you will find this guide very helpful. It's a heap of writing information, right at your fingertips.

        1 out of 5 stars Duplication of the 2003 Writer's Market book.......2003-06-12

I recently ordered Writer's Digest Market Online and am very disappointed with my order, if not downright angry. When I received it, I was dismayed to find out that this "Market Online" book is indeed the same thing, or very similiar, to the 2003 Writer's Market book. I ordered this with the belief that this book would offer online markets (websites) to sell articles to. Instead, it lists magazines and book publishers - the very same thing as the original 2003 Writer's Market! I feel that this book is a duplication of the first and cannot return my book now because I opened it and consider it a waste of money.

        1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2003-05-29

[$$$] book offering great online access BUT you have to scrape off a number (like a lottery ticket) to access your code and mine got all mangled (not like a lottery ticket) - and Writer's Market just ignored me when I contacted them. That's fraud! I wasted [$$$] for nothing!

5 out of 5 stars Your career starts here.......2002-08-24

There are few events in life that I look forward to more than receiving my shiny new Writer's Market each year. Once again, the good people at Writer's Digest Books have outdone themselves. This exhaustively researched book contains more than 8,000 places to sell your work-- what more could you ask for? Oh! How about pricing guidelines, expert advice, info about agents, writing contests, syndicates, organizations for writers...

I mean it most earnestly when I tell you I wouldn't have a career without this book. And ever since I got the online version, I'm not sure how I lived without it. I use it every day to keep track of my submissions. It even tells me when it's time to follow up on a query, and allows me to record notes about different markets-- I can punch in my deadlines, payment info, contact names, etc.

Of all the books in the world, this is the only one that I can say with full confidence is an absolute necessity to those who want to make a career of their writing. The price is meager compared to its benefits. No matter what you write, you'll find markets for it here.

        --Jenna Glatzer, Editor-in-Chief, AbsoluteWrite.com

        4 out of 5 stars Essential resource.......2002-07-05

A must-have for working and aspiring writers alike. Beginners will find the articles helpful, working pros need the listings.

FYI: The listings makes side-by-side comparisons practically impossible, so I recommend inputting the information on your computer, then formatting it as a table. Pricing guidelines are sometimes inconsistent (average pay is listed as above-average and vice versa) and some small sections look as if they went directly to press without proofreading. Online updates more than compensate for such minor considerations.

Editors are so accustomed to receiving inappropriate queries that they "rejoice," according to a Writer's Market tip from the University of Arizona Press, "in receiving material that is clearly targeted to [them]." So, please, do not send your article about porcelain-doll collecting to Sport Fishing magazine. Put your postage toward this updated edition of the Writer's Market instead. This book might not seem to change much from year to year, but it does. Editors move, publishing houses are gobbled up by one another, and magazines open and fold like Japanese fans. And where else can you learn both that Focal Press is publishing fewer photography books, and that Ide House is inaugurating a poetry branch?

Given the unbelievable variety and sheer number of publishers listed here--1,170 book publishers, 1,534 consumer magazines, 464 trade magazines, 250 script buyers, plus book producers, syndicates, and greeting-card publishers--it's almost hard to imagine a writer not finding a publisher. New this year are large icons indicating new listings, a limited section on literary agents, and a chart showing the owners and imprints of the major book publishers. In addition to the standard articles about query letters, book proposals, and freelance rates are profiles of authors, including nature writer and prisoner Ken Lamberton, Sebastian Junger (The Perfect Storm), and Anna Quindlen (Black and Blue), who says that "Writing is like anything else. You fall, you pick yourself up, and you try again. When you're discouraged, you eat ice cream." (Also available with CD-ROM.) --Jane Steinberg

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not new.......2003-12-16

This is still THE reference guide for authors to get their works published, but it is not as updated from the 1999 version as I would have hoped for. If you have 1999, you can probably wait for the 2001 or 2002 edition.

            4 out of 5 stars I Buy it, I Use it, I Like it ... BUT:.......2003-07-29

One day in 1973 I decided to stop on the way home from work and browse the science fiction section at my local Walden Books (we didn't have SmashedWords back then). By happenstance, the Reference shelves were adjacent to the Science Fiction & Fantasy section. There wasn't much new in SF that day, and my eyes wandered as I scanned the shelves...

By some quirk of fate, my gaze came to rest on a book titled WRITER'S MARKET.

"Hey," I said to myself, "I wonder if that's what the title implies?" I pulled the book from the shelf, leafed through it, and yep--it was what the title implied. I bought it, took it home, and within a couple weeks I had sold some articles. (All I really wanted to sell were science fiction short stories, but that would take another five years.)

In the (whoa!) 30 years since, I've never been without WRITER'S MARKET. As a freelancer I (and you) have to know who's where, and what they're buying. This is the source.

(But remember this: It's not the only source. I also recommend THE WRITER'S HANDBOOK, from the Writer Books. It has listings that are not in WRITER'S MARKET (and vice-versa), and the differing approaches to organizing content make both equally useful.)

There were times when I didn't exactly need it, as I had my hands full with columns and book contracts, but I was glad to have it. In addition to being the great reference that it is, seeing WRITER'S MARKET on the shelf above my desk always made me feel like I was a part of something.

More important, I've found the book to be a find idea generator. I get all sorts of useful ideas just reading publishers' requirements and needs.

Having said all that, I must also say that I prefer THE WRITER'S HANDBOOK approach of putting listings in multiple categories where appropriate. I also think the book could carry less advertising. And a few other things (which is why I recommend THE WRITER'S HANDBOOK equally and concurrently).

Anyway, buy the book or borrow it from your library. Whether you're writing full-time or part-time, WRITER'S MARKET is one of the most valuable professional references your'll find.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money - too generic and untailored.......2003-05-28

This book has hardly been used since I bought it a year ago. I would suggest that you borrow a copy from the library or from a friend rather than purchase it.

As a freelancer of lifestyle magazine articles and the occasional news report, I find this book not very useful. The magazines listed in the book tend to be very subject-specific, e.g. will only accept in-depth articles about medical issues, or Korean American life, or hunting. It's not very helpful at all if you are not already a speciality subject writer. Chances are you will probably find 1 or 2 magazines that you don't already know about from the whole big book. Also, the book ostensibly does not list some really (relatively) well-paying and well-known magazines that accept freelancers' work, for example, Film Quarterly.

It's not very helpful either to someone who wants to get short stories published. It's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack - you'll have better luck looking online, or simply a book of short story collections (e.g. collections of the O. Henry Prize, which list America's best short story magazines at the back, with addresses).

I regret having bought it and it's certainly something that I'm going to give away when I move.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Important and Handy Tool for Writers.......2003-05-17

If you are a serious writer and really want to know where you can send your work, the "Writer's Market 2003" is just the thing for you. It doesn't guarantee that you'll get published, but it increases the chance of it. I'm still waiting and working, but I know one of these days it's going to pay off. And this is something I always manage to pick up each year.

The "Writer's Market 2003" is a book filled with hundreds upon hundreds of listings for different publications and publishing organizations. From plays to books, short stories to poems, non-fiction to essays, and that only covers a FEW of the things these organizations are looking for. There's also a listing of various contests you can participate in.

It's very easy to use. Each listing gives you a brief summary of what these places are looking for, the kind of writers they're interested in, and most importantly what LEVEL of writers they want (from veteran authors to new authors). You'd be surprised to learn there are quite a few places that accept work from people without literary agents (and yes, there are listing for them as well). And there are also very easy-to-use symbols that will help guide you through this monster of a book.

You also get very important tips on how to submit your work, how to set up your letters (queries and cover letters), and much more. There are some very important and helpful tips in here, so be sure to read them.

The only real drawback is the pricing. It can be pretty pricy. And it's going to take up a lot of room on your bookshelf, being how big the book is. Now, these aren't terrible drawbacks, but they are indeed drawbacks, especially when they keep coming out with new editions each year.

If you're a writer and you're having trouble finding places to send your work to, then the "Writer's Market 2003" is something you should definitely consider checking out. Not only does it help you get your work out there, but it also encourages you to write more and send more of your works. A very important tool for writers, or at least that's what I think.
