Been there myself!.......2007-02-16
Fabulous book about places I have visited and loved -- I actually
know Michelle who owns the Hotel Esmerelda (she will autograph my
copy of book), and have spent many happy hours in the bookstore
around the corner (never go to Paris without visiting it), and
of course, Monet's art and home are the pinnacle. A wonderful
and inspirational book for all!
A Trip into the creative capacity and vision of an artist through the eyes of innocent wonder.......2006-09-05
In 1988 I begged my Principal(I was a teacher in the Salinas valley) to purchase a set of this book.I taught in the "middle of nowhere " that now holds a good chunk of my heart. This was the time of teaching through literature sets, wholly in love with language, and inspiring children by creating together environments to make meaning and to find "context" for learning. It was a time to motivate lives. Toni Ungs, my then Principal, turned to me and replied, no, that I would be the "only teacher" on site who would use the set. And so it goes in teaching, yet another opportunity denied by those thinking within their prodigious logic systems.
So... I bought the set out of pocket as I do most everything, a teacher tale for another time I spend thousands each year to do what matters. This book is just a delight for students. A young, girl, Linnea and her elder neighbor embark on a trip together to see Monet's Gardens. They live in Europe and this book offers a glimpse into another world for the children. Both share a love of the actual plants/flowers/gardens Monet painted, the artist, the paintings and after planning their trip together we in turn share their gentle journey as they go see the L'Orangrie/Paris and head to the gardens. Since I've had the pleasure of those places and share the love of Monet...it's a book that I share every spring with my classes. I choose to teach Monet in the spring when "what so soon will wake and grow , utterly unlike the snow" thoughts crowd my imagination. I am fortunate in that we have a TV and I bought a DVD player to share the DVD of this book.(among other things) The DVD's as good if not better than the book. I have a pop out book of his garden and a book from a Monet Retrospective I went to in New York in my teens to supplement the images and students seem as captivated as the rest of us in these experiments in light. The notion of a "series", of the way light, time, weather affect the same image are very fascinating things for my students. Then we paint. Of course I embed this in my talking of Paris, reading Madeline, trying to teach a bit of the French, and our sharing baguettes, cheese, Napoleons and a petit four or two. My first grade enjoys my attempts at cultural contexts and bringing into their lives a notion of great artists. I can confess here on this site, I suppose, that it's heady stuff to bring Monet, Picasso and the world of art to students.First grade allows you the kind of "you heard it here first" honor. I'm all the more brilliant in their eyes for it. Of course it connects them to much larger contexts and from time to time these are revealed in the year when my class screams out "Monet" at an assembly or "Beethoven, "Ode to Joy" "or somehow lets the school collective know we are up to something in room 10. And that something includes learning about a little girl that ventures to a hotel with her neighbor and picnics on the grounds of Monet's gardens and sees for herself the beauty of his creation from the world of nature. Now that's a sweet confession to share with Amazon readers. Choose this book for a child, you'll be glad you did.
Monet's Garden.......2005-06-17
I absolutely LOVED this book when I was younger. So, if you're having doubts about your child liking it, I wouldn't...I had the doll of Linnea and I carried it around with me everywhere...and I also brought the book everywhere I could as well.
B e a u t i f u l.......2003-11-15
Linnea, a young Swedish girl has developed quite a friendship with the elderly Mr. Bloom, her upstairs neighbor. Mr. Bloom is a retired gardener who is the proud owner of a lovely book about the great French artist, Claude Monet. After hours and hours of studying Monet and his life, the pair begin the ultimate adventure: a trip to Paris, and where it all began! Linnea and Mr. Bloom visit the Marmottan museum to observe the many paintings of Monet. They study his artwork and how the genius painted. They learn about other Impressionist artists--many who were great friends of Monet. Eventually the young child and elderly gentleman make the ultimate trek to Giverny, where Monet lived and painted.
This book could almost be a 'fun' textbook. The artwork, both of the author's and of Monet's is absolutely exquisite. Becoming familiar with Monet's life and his paintings become a marvelous art history lesson. As an adult, I not enjoyed reading this lovely book but I learned a lot. In fact, a few days after reading LINNEA in Monet's Garden I was watching a Sex in the City episode where Charlotte was showing a group of people one of Monet's 'lily' murals. Being familiar with that painting because of this book was an exciting moment for me!
Impossible to resist.......2003-10-17
I picked this up at the home of a friend. Her little girl scampered over and, eyeing me with suspicion, said, "That's MY BOOK." Once she gave me permission to look at it if I promised to treat it carefully, I began to wish I really could steal it!
What a treasure. Linnea in Monet's Garden is a way to introduce children (about age 6-10, I'd say) to the appreciation of Impressionist art. The book includes photographs and drawings of Monet's home and family, a story of his life, and full-color reproductions of many of his paintings. Linnea is taken to Giverny by the elderly Mr. Bloom and, as she is entranced by all things Monet, so will you be, too.
Buy two copies: one for yourself and one for a young friend.

Gives you everything you want to know about places to eat in L.A. I'll probably pick up versions for other cities that I travel to.
Helpful - actually it makes me hungry ;-).......2006-12-14
Choc-full of great information, Zagat once again shows the best and the worst of so many different types of eateries in the greater LA. From The Abbey right through to Zucca Ristorante it goes alphabetically through some great sounding places. Many I've been to and the reviewers are accurate more times than not, so this is a book I think you can trust. It includes websites for the restaurants and it includes prices and even eateries in Palm Springs, Orange County and Santa Barbara etc. It's easy to follow and there is practically something in here for everyone. I mean EVERYONE. From all types of cuisines in all price brackets. It's a great guide that gives you a little insight into new places to try or just your old favourites. I highly recommend this great book.

I received this book from my friend when my daughter was first born and started reading to her early on. She is now 22 months and loves this book. Every night she wants me to read her a story from this book. She carries this book everywhere with her. She loves the illustrations and when we go out to dinner this book does the trick to entertain her while we wait. The book is now falling apart so I'll soon have to replace with a new one. I strongly recommend it.

After buying the Little Big Book for Moms for my daughter in law, I discovered the Grandmothers version. I treated myself and I just love it. There are also bunches of crafts, nursery stories, some with Grandmother theme, songs and games. I have a seven month old as well as 18 year old granddaughters. There are good things to share with both.

Secrets of Shamanism: Tapping the Spirit Power Within You.......2007-07-03
Interesting, but doesn't match my physical and menthal condition. These excesises break the balance of tension and relaxation in my body, and I become more self-content and less of service to others. However, the experience with shaman jorneys cast another light on that. Everything envisioned seems true!
My first Shamanic book........2007-06-20

Insightful.......2006-12-07

The best book on using your power that I have read.......2006-11-10
Shades of Carlos Casteneda. It brings the priceless Don Juan-type of knowledge to our level so that we can interpret and use the concepts to increase our power. It is fascinating and a real page-turner.
Book Description
Georg Buchner died in 1837 at a tragically early age, and his three works for the stage remained virtually unknown for half a century. Today all three, especially Danton's Death, his great play about the French Revolution are performed regularly.
Book Description
Filmmaker and medical doctor Lena Einhorn uses all her scientific skills to elucidate the true story about the historical Jesus, changing, perhaps irrevocably, the study of New Testament history and the way we see the relationship between Jesus and the apostle Paul.
Customer Reviews:
Jesus Sells!.......2007-09-22
An thorough review of the various theories about the historic reality of Jesus, but ultimately a disappointing rehash of old theories with nothing new except the unsupported theory that Paul was Jesus. Still, a good reference source for conspiracy enthusiasts.
AMAZING BOOK!! Manages to be both boring AND wrong!.......2007-08-08
Einhorn thinks that Jesus survived his crucifixion and became Paul. But she doesn't even TRY to convince you of this. Instead, the book reads like a student who has padded his term paper with a lot of extraneous junk to get it to the required twenty pages. Only in this case, it's two hundred and twenty four pages of padding before she gets to her idea.
So the poor reader has to plow through an utterly pointless aside about a forged gospel of Mark, or speculations about Mary Magdalene. Einhorn tells you that "the Roman era was a dynamic one" (p 173) for those who have never read a history book. And then there's the travel details: "Jerusalem is situated high up on a limestone plateau, at an altitude of 2,600 feet" (115).
But where is the proof that Jesus became Paul? She offers none. She admits that the characters of Paul and Jesus were very different but gives no explanation for that. She says Jesus spoke Aramaic, Paul spoke Greek and can only say "we do not...know anything about Jesus' knowledge of languages" (p 229). She has no answers to why Paul was running from town to town persecuting Christians before his conversion if he was Jesus Christ. A fit of insanity? It was against the law to crucify a Roman citizen, so if Jesus was crucified, how did he suddenly become Paul, the Roman citizen, a few years later?
Paul, as the most famous student of Gamaliel, would have been a well known figure in Jewish circles. Everyone in Jerusalem would know him by sight. Not to mention the people in towns where he went to persecute Christians. He couldn't have been Jesus in Jerusalem and then later come back as Paul without someone noticing. Does Einhorn have any explanation for that? And the time problem--how could Paul have been both Jesus Christ living a life in a poor town while at the same time being the star pupil of the most famous rabbi ever?
She admits even she had doubts about Paul meeting the other apostles in Jerusalem and convincing these people that he was Paul, not Jesus. Yes, that would be a stumper. But she decides that maybe they were in on it too. This makes sense to her? People deciding to be persecuted for something they know to be a lie? They went to jail and gave up their lives for this lunatic liar Jesus/Paul? What for? Why the heck was Jesus/Paul slogging through all those cities trying to convince people to worship Jesus? Why did so many in Jerusalem convert if Jesus didn't die on the cross and come back to life? Why were they willing to die under Nero if Christianity was a silly lie?
She seems completely clueless that the gospels and Paul's epistles are chock full of dates and the names of people who could be checked if anything was questionable. The Romans were fiends for keeping records. Facts could be checked. Christians were smugly pointing out to people two hundred years after Jesus died that the records were still in place about the crucifixion. And yet Einhorn supposes that nobody, not a single person, thought to check out the facts when the gospels were so full of them? And nobody noticed that Jesus had become Paul. Wonder how she thinks Paul explained those nail marks. Especially as a Roman citizen.
She prepares you for her shocker about Jesus becoming Paul by throwing out everything she finds suspicious about Jesus. She marvels that the Koran says "Jesus was never crucified" (p 168). Gee, the founder of a new religion didn't agree with the claims of a prior religion?
The whole idea about Jesus surviving his crucifixion came to her "at a dinner party. Pieces fell into place" (p 173) and suddenly, she knew Jesus hadn't died on the cross. Or maybe she had too much wine. "I am irresistibly attracted to the mysterious, or rather to the reality behind the mysterious" (p 2) she admits.
The real mystery is why this was published.
good overview, interesting theory.......2007-07-22
I bought this book because I wanted to read Einhorn's theory that Jesus and Paul were the same person. I was surprised (and not thrilled) to find that most of the book was a pulling together of many of the existing theories about Jesus - revolutionary, Egyptian, magician, etc. The only existing theory that really belongs in this book is the one concerning Jesus faking his own death, as that leads to and supports Einhorn's own theory. Einhorn also covers the church's editing of texts written by historians such as Josephus, which again, isn't relevant to her theory. And there is a fairly long digression concerning John the Baptist that I couldn't find a reason for. Einhorn actually did a rather good job at summarizing these theories (although of course there are still others she didn't cover), so one could appreciate this part of the book AS a summary, and an introduction to this area in general. Really the book is more like TWO books - a summary/overview of theories about Jesus, and her own theory about Jesus and Paul as the same person.
I would have liked Einhorn to have applied the same energy and thoroughness to her Jesus/Paul theory. It's quite interesting and seems plausible. I got the impression that she spent so much time reading the various existing theories that she couldn't resist writing them up, and then by the time she got to her own theory, she was worn out. I would have preferred that the bulk of the book address her own theory, and that she provide a great deal more detail to support her theory, as that is the part that is original, while the rest of the book is really just rehash. I think she could have published the rehash/overview part as a separate book and done quite well with it.
"The Jesus Mystery" is very strongly recommended reading for Christians and non-Christians alike........2007-06-09
In "The Jesus Mystery: Astonishing Clues To The Identities Of Jesus And Paul", filmmaker Lena Einhorn writes with historical accuracy the true story of Jesus of Nazareth utilizing a combination of New Testament writings and texts from contemporary Jewish and Roman historians. Of special note is what Einhorn writes with respect to the legends about Jesus' birth and childhood, death and resurrection that survived both within and outside of Christianity during the first centuries after the Nazarene's crucifixion at the hands of the Roman occupation of Jerusalem and Palestine. "The Jesus Mystery" addresses such controversial issues as whether or not there was an historical Jesus, the Paulinian influence and the role of Church politics in the opening decades of the Christian movement on the perceptions concerning Jesus. An engaging, informative, articulate, and sometimes iconoclastic work of admirable historical research and scholarship, "The Jesus Mystery" is very strongly recommended reading for Christians and non-Christians alike.

Beautiful and Serene.......2007-01-09
I love this book. I keep it out on my coffee table and look at it often. Excellent photographic quality.
Nice, but.......2006-12-29
I received this as a gift and could not wait to get a quiet moment to open this book and escape. I did like the beautiful photos, however found that the author had too many of the same area and could have done so much more. The last pages contained favorite beach areas but did not have any photos which I would of liked. Will go back to the book again someday but not what I was hoping for.
Beautiful Book.......2005-05-05
This is a beautiful little book that would make a great addition to any ocean lover's collection.
My Favorite Beaches Book - Inspirational !.......2004-12-15
I am a beach lover, and as the DVD producer / cameraman of the "Waves: Virtual Vacations" Series here on Amazon.com, this book has been an inspiration to me. The spectacular shots of beaches from around the world are truly extraordinary. Having shot myself hundreds of the best beaches from California, Hawaii, Florida, the Caribbean both with stills and for the DVDs, I can easily say this book is top notch. I highly recommend it. It sits proudly on my desk. And for those who want to see and hear what some of these beaches really feel like, bring this book with you and check out our Waves DVDs here on Amazon.
A Retreat in Itself.......2003-08-21
The is a stunning book. The photos come from diverse parts of the globe and diverse coastal landscapes. At first, I was skeptical of the small-ish size. But the photos are very high quality and beautiful to look at. Maybe someday I'll get around to looking at the text?
Now and then, I pull the book off the shelf and flip through the photos -- an instant retreat to the shore. Great for anyone who loves the sea but can't be there very often.
