Book Description

"I wanted to write a book to help all the creative dreamers make their creative dreams even more real....I have a lot to share about struggle and success, and the long flat places in between. My experiences as a recovering procrastinator and perfectionist give me a keen understanding of how they work to delay creative dreams (and why that's sometimes a good thing). I admit my 'splendid imperfections' because I know that my mistakes and stumblings can be of use to others."
-- From the Introduction

SARK (Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy) has lived one of her creative dreams by transforming herself from a struggling artist into a bestselling author, artist, and creative spiritualist. She is actively working with her other dreams, and she tells readers that making dreams real is not only about making dreams come true but also about living with all that is real about life -- the disappointments, frustrations, progress, quitting, and fulfillment. Now she tells readers how they can live their dreams in a guide that is practical, inspirational, realistic, and as inventive as only SARK can be. Whether your dream is to write a book or plant a garden, open a bed and breakfast or get a degree, help children with cancer or star in a musical, SARK guides you step-by-step on a journey toward making your dream REAL.

Are you wondering just what your creative dream is? SARK puts you in a "dream activator" state of mind and helps you figure it out. Are you lost in the Land of No? SARK can help you work with your fear and negativity, live with and transform procrastination and perfectionism, communicate with inside and outside critics, and work with inertia. Do you have a dream but it seems overwhelmingly impossible? SARK's famous microMOVEment technique will help you make your creative dream journey in tiny yet powerful steps. Need inspiration? Read the stories of others who are making their creative dreams real. Having difficulty fitting your dream into your real life? Let SARK show you how to think differently about time and find resources in unexpected places and people.

To begin, choose one of two tables of contents: one for the logical or linear mind that follows the steps in order or one for the more abstract thinker who would prefer to play the system like a game. No matter which path your journey follows, you'll encounter SARK's whimsical humor and tender understanding of human foibles, extensive resource sections, and lots of exercises that will help you get unstuck, activate creativity, and put plans into juicy action. Make Your Creative Dreams Real is the all-in-one book for everyone who has ever wanted to live a more deeply creative and satisfying life.

5 out of 5 stars A Creative Dream is anything you want it to be..........2007-05-11

...it's anything that you want in life...from a house, to a family to being recognized creatively. SARK gives us a step by step guide that gives you micromovements to work towards your goals over the course of a year....in this book she had so much to say that she did not write it in her traditional way that has brought her much acclaim. instead she worked with the publisher to bring your a book that is still not in your typical form...it is beautiful, inspirational and helpful. thanks sark for all your hard work and for giving the publisher a great challenge.

5 out of 5 stars Yipeeeee.......2007-03-01

I love this book. I love anything Sark creates. She has a beautiful creative mind. She can take you places and make you laugh. She lets you know its ok to be yourself. Lazy or alive. Just be yourself. The pages of her books are so sparkley (is there such a word). SARK sparkles. I wait for her new books so i can laugh daily.

3 out of 5 stars Least favorite.......2006-08-11

Of all of SARK's wonderful books, this is my least favorite and I have them all. Of course, anything from SARK is worth consideration so don't let me stop you. She is so wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book as intro into Susan's work .........2006-05-13

I have been receiving Susan's e-letters for a few years and own three of her books. I think this is a wonderful book to purchase to get a whole picture of what she is all about. I enjoyed doing the worksheets even though that is not my thing. I now operate thinking 'macro', not only in general tasks to do, but in my professional life as a designer (to make deadlines). While reading through this book the first time, I felt like SARK knew me personally and was writing about 'my' faults. This is how close it all hit home.

Excellent first SARK book for anyone who needs a nudge to straighten up their daily routine or wants help to get mentally organized. Then it's up to you to follow through and make it work :o)

5 out of 5 stars Motivational & Insprirational!!.......2006-02-23

Sark's method of teaching and motivating you to follow your dreams is unlike anything else I've ever read. She encourages lots of napping and taking tiny steps toward your dreams which she coins Micromovements. Sark writes in a style that is easy to follow but makes you want to continue to read more!! I highly recommend anything by her!

Book Description

A riveting behind-the-scenes look at the world of three-star French haute cuisine as revealed through the biography of one of France's most celebrated chefs, The Perfectionist is an unforgettable portrait of Bernard Loiseau, and the sophisticated, unforgiving world of French gastronomy. Loiseau was one of only twenty-five French chefs to hold Europe's highest culinary award, three stars in the Michelin Red Guide, and only the second chef to be personally awarded the Legion of Honor by a head of state. Despite such triumphs, he shocked the culinary world by taking his own life in February, 2003. One of the ratings for his restaurant had taken a disappointing drop, and rumors swirled that he was on the verge of losing a Michelin star (a prediction that proved to be inaccurate). Recounting his ascension to wealth and fame, Chelminski unravels the complex character of Loiseau while giving a fascinating, unvarnished glimpse inside an echelon filled with competition, culture wars, and impossibly high standards. BACKCOVER: “Loiseau seems likely to become a mordant icon of the eternal war between critics and cooks…[Chelminski] has a moving story to tell, with universal implications: the downfall of the artist through perfectionism and paranoia.”
—Adam Gopnick, The New Yorker

“The Perfectionist tells, in rich detail, the story of Bernard Loiseau's rapid rise and desperate efforts to stay on top, but this cautionary tale is also a deeply informed guide to the last half century of French cuisine…”
—William Grimes, The New York Times

“One of the finest and most incisive portraits of a chef ever written—and a sobering account of the real human costs of being the best. A book as strong on "who" cooks as "what" is cooking. Absolutely fascinating."
—Anthony Bourdain, author of the New York Times bestseller Kitchen Confidential

“A revealing look at the rise and fall of French chef Bernard Loiseau…”
—People Magazine's “Great Reads”

“The Perfectionist is a good book: knowledgeable, revealing, and informative. It brings back to life in very believable ways a man who much of the time was, as the cliché goes, larger than life.”
—Johnathan Yardley, The Washington Post

“…rich and finely detailed…if you're at all curious about what makes our always maddening yet intriguing allies tick, then tuck into The Perfectionist...”
—USA Today

“The Perfectionist examines Loiseau's suicide in the context of French culinary history, delving deep into the mad passion that seems to drive many master chefs… Mouthwatering descriptions abound…the behind-the-scenes look at the kitchens of some of France's finest restaurants is fascinating…”
—The Boston Globe

“…The Perfectionist effectively reveals the pressure-cooker atmosphere among a culinary elite dominated by intense rivalries, fickle reviewers, and hypercritical chefs for whom there is no such thing as second best.”
—Entertainment Weekly

“Rudolph Chelminski is an excellent and absorbing writer who obviously understands the inner workings of the culinary world, as well as how chefs think. His empathy for the industry as a whole - and for Bernard Loiseau in particular - makes The Perfectionist a fascinating read.”
—Daniel Boulud, Chef/Owner DANIEL, author of Letters to a Young Chef and Daniel Boulud's Café Boulud Cookbook

4 out of 5 stars The rise and fall of a celebrity chef........2007-07-05

The career of French chef Bernard Loiseau (1951-2003) illustrates Seneca's statement there is no great genius without a touch of madness. On February 24, 2003, Loiseau committed suicide when his celebrated restaurant, Côte d'Or, was falsely rumoured to be in danger of losing its three-star Michelin rating. To Loiseau, taking his life was a question of honor. Parisian journalist, Rudolph Chelminski, follows Loiseau's rise to celebrity chef status in The Perfectionist: Life and Death in Haute Cuisine, from Loiseau's apprenticeship as a teenager at the famous Roanne restaurant, Troisgros, between 1968 and 1971, to working for Claude Verger at La Barrière de Clichy in 1972, to again working Verger as a chef at the Côte d'Or in Saulieu, Burgundy, in 1975, where he developed a highly personal style of nouvelle cuisine. In 1982, Verger sold La Côte d'Or to Loiseau, and in 1991 the Michelin Guide awarded its coveted 3-star rating to the restaurant. The French government then awarded Loiseau with the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, Officier de l'ordre national du Mérite and Chevalier du Mérite agricole. Chelminski also chronicles Loiseau's slow descent into madness and self-doubt, resulting in his suicide, at a time when he was happily married and at the top of his profession. For Loiseau, cooking was always more than a career. It was his passion.

Chelminski writes from a unique perspective in that he was personally acquainted with his larger-than-life subject for nearly three decades. He first met Loiseau in 1974, when the chef was 23 and already winning recognition with his culinary talents. Chelminski's fascinating book not only succeeds at revealing Loiseau as a charismatic, extroverted, workaholic-media-darling with manic tendencies, obsessed with winning three Michelin stars, but also at illuminating just how influential the Michelin Guide's rating system is on European restaurants. This book will appeal to francophiles, foodies, and restaurant critics alike.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at at the personal cost of Guide Michellan 'star' system in the life of one French 'Star' chef of Haute Cusine.......2007-05-14

Even if you are not a culinary professional, 'Francophile' or 'world traveler' this combination of biography, food and fame, will keep you turning the pages. Written by a man deeply familiar with both Chef Bernard L. and the inside workings of France's culinary inner circle, it reads almost like a detective story (see The Making of a Chef) A cautionary tale for 'obsessive-compulsives' everywhere and foodies of all ranks, this is the book for you. Professional foodies will love it.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to be a chef to enjoy this book.......2006-12-14

I enjoyed this book very much. A person does not have to be a professional chef to enjoy this book. There are many French terms in this book, so beware; however, in context, a reader can figure out what the words mean (eg: I only had 2 yrs of French in High School and I was able to figure out most of the French terms,in context. Also, the footnotes explain most of the French cooking terms).

Anyhow, THE PERFECTIONIST is a book about the rise and fall of a famous French Chef. Before he died, he was one of the most well-known French Chefs of the times. He was fascinating! The Chef was in love with cooking, but he was also in love with "making it to the top---quickly". His mental anguish (or mental disease) caused the Chef's fall and the author takes the reader ,step by step, through the ups and downs of this great Chef. A sad story in the end, but a wonderful read because it explains how truly competitive the world of cooking (or Haute Cuisine)is....especially in the world of the great Chefs of France.

Before I bought this book , I never knew how the Michelin-Star system works, but now I know........ Fascinating!

3 out of 5 stars bi-polar chef.......2006-05-30

This book is worth reading if you have an interest in the culinary arts even though the author doesnt put any life into his portrait of the characters and we are left wondering why anyone did what they did. The book is a recitation of facts...nothing like Jacques Pepin's autobiography which is similar in its stove-slave beginnings. Neither chef went to culinary school. But Jacques got out of France. In France, the only way to succeed big-time is through the Guide Michelin's demands. That led Chef Bernard Loiseau to go into fantastic debt and neglect his personal life. We really don't get a feel for our hero's personal life. Chelminski doesnt like either of Bernard's wives and maybe Bernard didnt either. Maybe he was gay and couldnt come out of the closet due to Guide Michelin. Who knows? The author thinks Bernard killed himself at 53 because he was a manic depressive and didnt take enough drugs. An interesting fact Chelminsky reveals is the large number of important chefs who die of heart attacks or strokes in their 40's and 50's. The description of the changes in French cuisine was interesting. However, he doesnt say how prevalent the olde style still is and how much these meals cost. Im surprised the insurance paid off all Bernard's debts when he committed suicide. Did he have a suicide clause?

5 out of 5 stars This is an important book for any artist/professional.......2006-05-15

I picked up this book after learning of the untimely passing of Bernard Loiseau. I previously read "Burgundy Stars" while I was in culinary school and considered that book to be an inspiration. I recommend reading "Burgundy Stars" before tackling this book to get a perspective of Mr. Loiseau during his rise to three stars that is not communicated in "The Perfectionist". The two work in tandem well.

Of course, the suicide of Mr. Loiseau hangs over every passage of this book, so there is a heavy feel to the text from start to finish. With the outcome known, the writer and reader are never able to relax and lightly appreciate the rise of this remarkable man. At every point both the writer and reader are looking for signs of what would lead to the demise of both the man and his image. This is one of my problems with the book. There are few if any light moments to temper the emotion of the death that we all know is on the horizon.

While the tone of the book may be dark, the story is amazing. I feel that anyone who works at high levels or overachieves can take something away from this book. Mr. Loiseau's mental problems are only one component of his personality. "The secret of success is consistency of purpose." No one ever embodied this quote more that Bernard Loiseau. Don't focus on his mental illness, focus on his passion for prefection.

Another problem that I have with the book was that the author integrated himself into the text nicely with personal accounts of his relationship with the great chef, but I wanted more of this. I think that more personal reflections by the author would have endeared me to the story a bit more, but this is just a minor criticism.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. I would give it 4.5 out of 5 if possible. If you are a chef, then this is a must-read. Remember, try to read "Burgundy Stars" first, it will make your experience with "The Perfectionist" complete.

Don't let the silly cover fool you, underneath, this is a well-written and informative book about perfectionism.

1 out of 5 stars This is a CHRISTIAN self-help book.......2002-07-09

If you are looking for a self-help book that doesn't require a particular religious view point -- DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. Certainly, don't be fooled by the fact that the author/publisher go out of their way to obscure the fact this entire book is premised on a relationship with the Christian God. No doubt this manipulation is meant for our own good -- maybe we will 'accidently' be saved. That is if you are willing to be saved by people who would misrepresent themselves. You'll have to look carefully on the back cover to find any reference to the religious beliefs which dominate this book. I for one do not appreciate being mislead, and I resent having paid for this book!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Analysis.......2001-08-24

Kathy has done her research into the problem of perfectionism, and writes with heart because she knows its highs and lows. Those who are frustrated about people who don't meet their expectations and with the high standards they set for themselves, but can't reach, will find counsel and warning here. Kathy's personal stories are real and ones that many will identify with. Her appendix section on living with a perfectionist will help those who find themselves on the other side of the fence.

5 out of 5 stars TOO Wonderful For Words! Thank you so much Kathy!.......2001-06-12

I never saw myself as a perfectionist. But when my mom said to me one day when I was worrying to stop being a perfectionist I thought I guess I am one! I looked at this book and the first time ignored it. But when I realized how much I needed it the second time I bought it! I am SO glad I did!

The first child or only child too tends to be a perfectionist so I have read. I guess that could explain it! That is beside the point. Kathys book will bring new light to your life.

Being a perfectionist and a Christian can be hard. The check list at the beginning that ask if you answer to most you are a perfectionist. I thought I was checking MOST but I got ALL once I read the book! I almost cried every time I read something new that made me realize that TOO was something I did because I was a perfectionist. It opened me up to new thoughts on being a perfectionist and a Christian all at once.

NO we are not perfect! We cant be or we would have NEVER needed JESUS! The rubber band idea is my favorite one, snap it for every bad thought you have about yourself! I still need mine to 'snap' I got out of my habit of snapping it because I wasnt doing it as much because of it! I love Kathys stories and honesty and how she throws it all in there to make you *think* She even leaves a note at the end where to write her by snail mail, email or visit her site! This gal is too wonderful!

If you are a perfectionist and a Christian this book is for YOU! I have seen many books on being a perfectionist the ones on how to stop being one and the ones on how to use it! (I work in a bookstore) But this is the FIRST and ONLY so far that is a Christian one! Much better because it deals with all thoughts on life the spirtual side and the other ones too!

God Bless You Kathy! You have brought a new light to my life and helped me see myself differently. I say BUY THIS BOOK! It will change you and make you feel differently and hopefully help you to eventually w/Gods graceful help change! :)

5 out of 5 stars Am I? Maybe...Maybe Not.......2000-12-19

The thing that enlightened me most about reading Kathy's book is that just when I found myself proudly exclaiming, "See! I'm NOT a perfectionist!", I turned another page and discovered that I am! Perfectionism takes on many different faces. Some of us feel the need for perfect homes or work environments. Others of us feel the need to be PERFECT in order to gain entrance into the Kingdom of God, eliminating grace altogether!"Grace is the opposite of perfectionism," Kathy so "perfectly" writes. "In fact, perfectionism could be called 'ungrace' or 'disgrace.'"

In this book Kathy does more than just point out the "signs of perfectionism." She gives us hope and direction with "charts" (as only a perfectionist would do!)with alternatives to our "behavior!" How freeing it is to be ME! without the stress!

At the end of the book I felt the relief of knowing I can enjoy an "orderly" life, without the chains of feeling less than adequate. Life, according to my husband, is not a magazine cover. Sometimes its a little messy. That's what makes it life!

And life is good!

Thank you, Kathy, for giving us such a treasure with your personal stories and insights!!

Book Description

How can we establish a political/legal order that in principle does not require the human flourishing of any person or group to be given structured preference over that of any other? Addressing this question as the central problem of political philosophy, Norms of Liberty offers a new conceptual foundation for political liberalism that takes protecting liberty, understood in terms of individual negative rights, as the primary aim of the political/legal order. Rasmussen and Den Uyl argue for construing individual rights as metanormative principles, directly tied to politics, that are used to establish the political/ legal conditions under which full moral conduct can take place. These they distinguish from normative principles, used to provide guidance for moral conduct within the ambit of normative ethics. This crucial distinction allows them to develop liberalism as a metanormative theory, not a guide for moral conduct. The moral universe need not be minimized or morality grounded in sentiment or contracts to support liberalism, they show. Rather, liberalism can be supported, and many of its internal tensions avoided, with an ethical framework of Aristotelian inspiration-one that understands human flourishing to be an objective, inclusive, individualized, agent-relative, social, and self-directed activity.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Reviews of Professors Miller and Fuller.......2006-03-20

"Norms of Liberty is one of the most important works on liberalism in recent years. The fact that individuals have different views of the good life poses a fundamental dilemma for modern political philosophy. Liberals frequently adopt a stance of moral neutrality, suggestive of relativism, subjectivism, or skepticism, while their opponents advocate a substantive moral view at the expense of individual freedom. Rasmussen and Den Uyl present a brilliant solution by distinguishing between normative principles guiding individual moral conduct and metanormative principles that concern legislation. They argue compellingly that neo-Aristotelian perfectionist ethics can support liberal non-perfectionist politics." -Fred D. Miller Jr., Social Philosophy and Policy Center, Bowling Green State University

"This is a fine piece of work in several dimensions. First, it is among the most comprehensive surveys of modern liberalism of which I am aware. Virtually every major contributor to thought on liberalism, for and against, from the 17th century forward is discussed in illuminating and intelligent ways. Second, the authors have a well-developed point of view about the liberal tradition, what it is and what it is not, how they think it can best be articulated and defended. There is no doubt that it is a major, significant contribution to the political philosophy of the liberal tradition. Here is a work that both synthesizes a wide range of the literature, offers original views of the subject, and provokes renewed discussion of just what the character of liberal thought is." -Timothy Fuller, Colorado College

Dane is an American magazine journalist, and John, a British psychotherapist. He says he knows everything about her, how she thinks, what she wants from life. Under the force of his certainty, Dane marries John and takes up the care of his silent three-year-old son, Robin.
They go on vacation to Majorca to try to become a family, but ten months into their marriage Dane finds herself growing more and more distant from John, impatient with his endless analysis of their relationship, and repulsed by his clumsy attempts at understanding. As ever, Robin's silence hangs constantly between them, a symbol of pure anger and hate. As the two weeks stretch on forever, Dane grows closer to a decision she can't quite make, and Robin sits silently in the middle, a reminder to her of all she cannot control....

        Book Description

Like the Martha of Jesus' day, so many women are preoccupied with being the perfect hostess, wife, mother, worker that it leaves many of them angry, frenzied, and depressed. In Martha to the Max, Debi Stack uses humor to bring great relief and encouragement to today's Marthas. This entertaining adventure will help readers view and use their abilities in a way that brings a smile to the face of God. Debi gives plenty of practical tips on slowing down and focusing on the 'one thing' Jesus said is needed.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for perfectionsists!.......2007-05-11

Okay, I admit--I'm not a perfectionist, at least not in the usual sense of the word. So, as a bona fide, card-carrying, clutter-oriented messie, I was surprised at how much I identified with the author's struggle. Perfectionist parenting and post project depression are common for many of us! Thanks for the reminder that an out of balance life doesn't honor the Lord, regardless of which side we fall on.

5 out of 5 stars Maxium laughter for Marthas....or Martha wanna bes.......2007-05-03

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone dealing with the burden of to do lists! I found so many surprising things in the book. The author's research on Martha of Bethany was really eye opening. I hadn't considered how they may have met Jesus or that they may have been wealthy. And she answers the question..."Why is Martha so bent out of shape?" The stories from the author's life, and those of friends, made people stop and ask me why I was laughing so hard. My two favs, the young couple preparing for the family BBQ and Milly's cats "swaggering through the food encrusted dishes, like tiny Cleopatras walking through piles of gold." I must have read that part to 10 people and I cried with laugher ever time! Awesome book!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book...could easily relate to.......2006-11-21

This book gave real world examples that made me chuckle when I realized how accurate of a description they are of me. I would recommend this book for Type A Christian woman who think they can do it all, but need to remember where our focus should be.

5 out of 5 stars "P A M I T P" can also be your new motto if you will put into practice Debi's ideas!!!.......2006-05-12

I gave this book FIVE STARS hands down! I love how this author hones in on the ever-challenging struggle us Christian women have between naturally being more like Martha in our own flesh vs. wanting to be more like Mary who willingly takes time to put God first and sit at His feet first every morning. After reading this book I see now that if I am surrendered to Christ and to walking in the Spirit over my own flesh....I can be the BEST of both Mary who sits at Christ's feet and listens and is taught and the BEST of her sister Martha who is more project and task oriented in the details of her day.

My favorite line in the book is on pg. 20 because it describes me and how I lived before reading this book: Debi writes, "Like Martha, I am tempted to perfect my own personal kingdom not seek the kingdom of God. Like Martha, I tend to view life as a series of projects, not a path toward knowing and serving Christ."

I am so pleased to boast that by applying many of Debi's ideas and with the Holy Spirit's help I regularly participate these days in THE GREAT SUPERNATURAL exchange of trading in my days dominated by walking in my flesh as a type A, O-C (obsessive-compulsive) Martha for a transformed life of walking in the Spirit (the best of Mary and Martha) as my new *normal*!

Like Debi before I was intentional and prayerful about living for God, I too was misguided for decades by admiring the unrealistic ways of such type A, O-C Martha perfectionists. But living this way wore me down and zapped me of contentment, zeal and joy! I thank God for Debi and her eye-openig and life-giving book and for her candid and transparent willingness to share her hard-earned lessons and battles so the rest of us may learn easier and quicker than she did! I enjoy Debi's humorous and honest approach willing to laugh at herself! I too use to judge harshly the type B's and viewed them as the lesser and very lackadaisical compared to us superior more competent classic Type A perfectionusts! Like Debi I skimmed over the scripture "Pride goes before destruction" and self-destruct I did which tends to happen when you live your way and not God's way!

But I am happy to report I am much closer to sharing Debi's motto these days of "PAMITP". . . what on earth is that you ask? Well it stands for Peope Are More Important Than Projects! This book is a MUST READ OWNER'S MANUAL for any Type A, O-C perfectionistic Martha's out there! It's chock-full of wisdom, laughs and a VERY easy and enjoyable read! God bless you Debi for sharing from your heart!!

4 out of 5 stars Just say NO to Perfectionism!.......2005-02-11

As a recovering perfectionist, I needed the reminders Stack gave in this book. She uses a lot of scripture, and she has quite a few academic references, which will appeal to a different type of reader than some of the other available "mom" books. Her main message: busy women, let's follow in Christ's footsteps, put God first, and "just say no" to perfectionism.
