Book Description

Mina knows that cooks like to master one recipe but then try different flavors with the main ingredient. MICHAEL MINA reveals how to recreate his trio concept, where a master recipe is followed by three flavor variations, each with its own variations and accompanied by side dishes created just for that version. A crispy loin of pork can be served with an orange/carrot, apple/sage, or tomato/corn combination of accompaniments. Although the flavor combinations create a sense of complexity, the recipes themselves are simple.Accompanying the trios are Mina's classic and most-requested recipes from his acclaimed restaurants, including Whole Fried Chicken with Truffled Macaroni and Cheese, and Root Beer Float with Warm Chocolate Chip Cookies. This book is a must-have for any cook with an adventurous palate.

2 out of 5 stars Not Mina's Food.......2007-02-15

If you know Michael "Haj" Mina and where his real influences come from you will know that this book does not contain his work, but rather the work of Chef George Morrone whom Mina trained under and worked for, for over a decade.

For example the Mussel Soufflé with the Saffron Sauce originally came from a seafood Soufflé pioneered at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles back in 1988 - believe it or not.

At the time Morrone was talking about opening his dream restaurant "Aqua." He eventually did and it became the hottest seafood restaurant in San Francisco. Mina went along as Morrone's right hand man. After Morrone left Aqua, Mina stayed on as chef. He parlayed this through hard work and a little luck and Andre Agassi into the Mina Group.

He may be a good business man but the creator and the genius behind his food is not him. Though Mina does give Morrone credit in the book Morrone deserves more - he deserves his name on the cover.

Still it's an awesome book and written more for a professional than the average home cook.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for a budding Chef.......2007-01-19

This book is a very good book, but not for someone who wants to just throw something together quickly. It's got some very sophisticated recipes and some quite complicated. All-in-all, it's a very good book, but if you're a cook and not a chef; I would look for something a bit simpler to cook from. On the other hand, if you love to cook and impress, this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful cookbook with pictures to match........2007-01-12

I had gone to Michael Mina in SF with some friends, who are also chefs, and they tried to get a recipe but couldn't. I found the cookbook while trying to search the internet for the recipe and thought "what a perfect Christmas gift". They LOVED it! The photography is beautiful and it shows exactly how he plates the food. Unless you are a true chef, I'm not sure most could handle the recipes but if you love great food and the challenge of cooking. This is a book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Cookbook.......2006-12-02

This is really a beautiful book, whether you cook from it or just aspire to cook from it. Having enjoyed an incredible evening at Michael Mina's namesake restaurant in San Francisco's Union Square, I can say that this book captures the experience perfectly. Also, Mr. Mina shares not only his insight and thoughtful introductions with each section and recipe, he also discusses his journey to success, and includes his family and staff along the way.

This is the first broad-based anthology to look exclusively at gender and gender relations. Feminist in approach, the topics and writings focus on the experiential basics of readers' lives. The articles are varied but offer unity in that raising one issue brings to mind other articles in the collection. Minas includes writings by thoughtful men and women who exhibit awareness in reacting to the feminist perspective.

    3 out of 5 stars in-depth!.......2005-11-22

I am in graduate school and read this for class--while I think it's interesting, I think it's a difficult read unless you're actively teaching. Read it if you find yourself teaching Basic Writing (BW) students, are interested in learning more about the social aspects of BW students (i.e. how the lower echelon of students feel about its treatment vs. those students in higher tracks) or the psychology of the student in general. If you are going to use it, it might be best to focus initially on what you are strongest in, i.e. syntax, grammar, spelling. While overall I found it interesting in theory, it was a difficult read and hard to grab practical information from it.

    5 out of 5 stars It's THE book.......2004-09-11

I can't agree with Dr. Bruce Leeds more. This is THE book for the teachers of basic writers. Also, it is food for thought for ESL writing teachers. This book is a classic. I am waiting for another equivalent classic for an ESL writing teacher like me.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Its Kind.......2003-12-28

With the patience and attention to detail of a saint, Professor Shaughnessy hunted, and found, patterns in her students' writing that allowed her to lift each student to his or her true potential. This is THE book for the teacher of basic, first-language writing. Her prose is stunning in itself and is a model for the kind of clear, elloquent writing she would espouse. Certainly the best of its kind and as yet to be equalled.

    5 out of 5 stars A humane, wise, window-opening book.......2000-04-06

In the dry world of composition theory, Shaughnessy's brilliantdiscussion of error in student writing stands as a landmark. Aftertwenty-plus years, this book remains highly readable and one of the half dozen most important books in the field. I particularly admire the writer's refusal to slip into the pseudo-scientific jargon that typifies the trendy, flimsy, unreadable literature that comprises the field of composition. Anyone who teaches writing at a high school or college level would benefit from reading this fine book.

Roger L. Conover, the editor of this excellent posthumous collection, has done the poetry-reading world quite a favor. Many of these poems originally appeared in long-defunct and nearly forgotten avant-garde journals, and have never before been available in book form. Mina Loy was a favorite of the other modernists (Ezra Pound thought she was as important a writer as William Carlos Williams and Marianne Moore), and the energy in her writing is truly impressive. Here's a taste, from "Mexican Desert": "The belching ghost-wail of the locomotive / trailing her rattling wooden tail / into the jazz-band sunset ... " Included here, too, are Loy's essays about poetry, futurism, and feminism.

    Book Description

Mina Loy's technique and subjects - prostitution, menstruation, destitution, and suicide - shock even some modernists and she vanished from the poetry scene as dramatically as she had appeared on it. Roger Conover has resuced the key texts from the pages of forgotten publications, and has included all of the futurist and feminist satires, poems from Loy's Paris and New York periods, and the complete cycle of "Love Songs," as well as previously unknown texts and detailed notes.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars a must for poets.......2004-01-03

I came across Loy in reading about the women of Paris. I have never come back to any book more than this one. Her craft of wordsmith continues to inspire and always make me feel like i'm reading the most interesting book of poetry.

5 out of 5 stars The most neglected talent of the century........1998-07-03

As an English major at a respected private college, I did not encounter this phenomenal woman's work. Five years later, I ask myself why. Stunning, intelligent, ground-breaking verse.

Mina Loy did not pursue literary fame (though she hobnobbed with the best), and it is, perhaps for this reason that I find her work so intriguing. Unhampered by criticism, Loy's work evokes a rare liberty. It is both poised and raw.

See also, BECOMING MODERN (her biography), for further adventures of this feminist, model, actress, painter, poet.

    Product Description

More and more often, emotional and behavioral problems in the young are being evaluated and treated by professionals other than child and adolescent psychiatrists—busy clinicians who may not struggle to keep abreast of the rapid changes in this challenging field. This book can help those nonspecialists better understand the problems of young patients by presenting specific guidance on more than a dozen commonly seen conditions, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, eating disorders, and tic disorders—all in concise chapters written by leading experts on these disorders.
Essentials of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry distills the authoritative advice found in the third edition of The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Updating and pruning that volume's detailed and comprehensive content, Essentials omits those chapters directed primarily toward subspecialists and retains what is immediately useful to general psychiatrists, pediatricians, neurologists, and nonphysician mental health clinicians such as nurses, psychologists, social workers, and family therapists. It offers an overview of child and adolescent psychiatric problems; practical guidance in the use of interviews, rating scales, and laboratory and diagnostic testing with young patients; and targeted information on a wide range of often-perplexing disorders, including: The book also features an updated chapter on psychopharmacology covering stimulants, antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and antianxiety drugs and addressing diagnostic considerations for their use. Other treatment measures are covered in the chapters on specific disorders. For the clinician who needs a practical guide to child and adolescent psychiatric disorders, Essentials is indeed essential, setting a new standard for authoritative help.

    Book Description

The most praised thriller writer to burst onto the scene in years returns with a brilliant new story of suicide, murder, violence, and greed. Responding to a late night-call, Paddy Meehan arrives at an elegant villa, where a calm blonde with blood running from her mouth answers the door. She has already convinced the police to leave and soon Paddy realizes how--she slips 50 bucks into Paddy's hands and begs her to keep the incident, whatever it is, out of the press. The next morning Paddy sees the lead news story: The blonde woman has been murdered, and far from the spoiled trophy wife Paddy assumed her to be, the victim turns out to be a prosecution lawyer with a social conscience. Bewildered why the woman didn't take the chance to leave the house when she could, Paddy begins to make connections no one else has seen. When she witnesses the body of a suicide victim being pulled from the river shortly afterward, Paddy suspects links between the two deaths and follows her idea to its shocking--and deadly--conclusion.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Bridget Jones in a bad dream.......2007-08-14

Another caveat to readers, and after reading my other reviews you will realize I only review a book when I feel cheated and mislead by other reviewers' ratings. Amazon provides two book reviews to tell you the plot and other individual reviewers repeat it again, so no need for that.

Dark, depressing, quirky, but stereotypical! Yes, this book speaks to all the themes of books about poverty-stricken Catholics. Paddy Meehan is like Bridget Jones, a chubby, chain-smoking, young woman suffering from low self-esteem, seeking comfort in food and sex. She is a misfit with a good heart, torn between the brutual necessity of her life (sole supporter of her large, dysfunctional family) and a desire for her life to mean more.

Now insert this "heroine" into a murder mystery and you have ....questions. Like another book I recently reviewed, (In the Woods), the narrative stops and starts, switches stories, and in the end does not deliver an ending. I am not talking about the cheap personal cliffhanger thrown in at the end of the book, designed to hook readers into buying the next Paddy Meehan adventure. I am speaking of the traditional plot summary, where the reader finds out what really happened. Did the bad guys get away with it...who is a good guy and who is not...How was Paddy's story received...What happened to Bernie? Did Katie live? What happend to Billy, Sean or Dug? It is hard to ask the right questions without giving the story away. Leaving loose ends to be developed in the next book is fair play, but so many? Then what was this book about? A writer cannot hold so much back that there isn't anything to come away with from a book. The result...who cares? The reader is left with the notion that the author can't be relied upon to deliver...so why try again?

I agree with the reviewer who said that the book is dark, dreary and unpleasant to read. The narrative does not flow, which actually fits the mood of the book. But the disjointedness is not the only problem. In addition to needing a good editor for wordy descriptions and grammatical errors, Ms. Mina needs to tighten her plot and draw her characters more completely if she wants to make readers care. At the end of the book Paddy muses,"This was the respect of her peers. She ran her tongue over her teeth. It tasted metallic, like faintly sour milk."
This is the taste the price of the book leaves in my mouth.

1 out of 5 stars Depressing and boring.......2006-12-14

I can't believe I read the same book as some of the other reviewers. This book was incredibly boring and depressing: Boring because there are two parallel narratives, so that the reader knows from almost the very beginning (Kate's first chapter, in which her relationship to the victim and the reason for her murder is made clear)what is going on and depressing because the book is set in 1984 Scotland, where almost everyone has lost their job, and Paddy's life as the sole wage earner for her entire family (including the obligatory abused sister) is depressing and full of cheapness and meaness.

I (generously) gave it a star because, for me at least, it sounds authenic and somewhat exotic. Too bad the strong sense of time and place was entirely wasted.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Intriguing Story with Interesting Characters That Are Real.......2006-11-04

Paddy Meehan worked the night shift at the Scottish Daily News. She hoped to someday get a break in her career and move up, but for now it was night rides around town to find a story. She came across one that would change her life.

The police radio in the car Paddy rode in, driven by Billy...a friend of sorts, brought her to a large house where a domestic fight was happening. As Paddy inquired about what was happening, the man at the door told her and the officer that it wouldn't happen again.

Paddy saw the beautiful woman through the open door in the mirror. She had blood on her face. Paddy asked if she needed help. The woman shook her head and backed away.

The man told her everything was fine and put money in her hand and said to keep the story out of the paper and shut the door. Paddy didn't want to take a bribe but didn't know what to do with the money. Her family was struggling financially for her father and brothers were out of work. Paddy was the breadwinner.

Many changes were happening at the Scottish Daily News for it was also struggling making money. Coworkers would change immediately, as well as her boss. Was she next? Would they find out about the money?

The next day, Paddy found out that the woman from the big house was murdered. Why didn't she ask for help? She could have walked away. This story was one that burned inside Paddy and she was going to find out who did this and why....even if her life depended on it.

Some of the terminology used in the book makes the reader pause for understanding but the details of the scenery and action are vivid. Paddy is a very lovable and unique character.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling criminal fiction through the eyes of the reporter.......2006-10-25

I picked this novel up as a page turner but quickly became caught up in the life and times of Paddy Meehan as she tried to make sense of a late night disturbance complaint. The disturbance quickly turns into a case of murder, and Paddy is one of the last to have seen the victim alive.

This novel combines with fast action and investigative skills with social commentary (if you are interested). The novel is well written, and the end of the novel has me waiting for the next installment, as surely Paddy's story must continue.

In the meantime, I need to seek out the first novel.

    Highly recommended.

    Jennifer Cameron-Smith

3 out of 5 stars Sort of Engaging.......2006-10-08

Wee Paddy Meehan is a chubby young woman trying to become an ace reporter for her Glasgow newspaper. Because she's young (and a woman), she has to take the crummy night shift, following police scanner messages to see if there's a story in every reported break-in or domestic dispute. One very cold night, however, she is called to the scene of more than just upscale domestic violence, but she doesn't realize it at first.

That dark night, a beautiful blonde attorney was tortured and killed--and it turns out Paddy was the last person, except for her killer(s), to see her alive. The police seem to be ignoring some crucial information, and Paddy slowly gets the big picture as to who killed the woman and why. Naturally, the bad guys need to get Paddy. If she's "eliminated", then no one will talk about the crime. Paddy eventually gets things sorted out, has a brief romance, and earns the fleeting respect of her paper's new editor.

I have a hard time liking Paddy much. There are so many descriptions of uncleanliness in all the characters, especially her--Paddy having unnamed body fluids running down her leg; a gross grit on her mouth and gums after eating bonbons, stepping in mud all the time; her dirty threadbare coat getting kicked on the ground all the time. I've enjoyed Denise Mina, for the most part, but Paddy just doesn't seem to catch my interest much. I guess there's one more in the series, and maybe Paddy'll be retired for more stand-alone novels from Mina. This is not something that needs to be near the top of your reading list.

    Book Description

This compelling successor to Garnethill, which won the prestigious John Creasy Memorial Award for Best First Crime Novel in 1998, returns to Glasgow's grimmer precincts and the untidy life of Maureen O'Donnell. It also again pulls Maureen into a grisly case of murder-this time of Ann Harris, who had been nursing two broken ribs and reeking of alcohol when she'd visited Maureen's office at the women's shelter two weeks before her mutilated body was washed up by the Thames hundreds of miles away. Eager to quit Glasgow for a spell and escape her own problems, Maureen travels to London to search out the circumstances surrounding Ann's brutal death-and soon finds herself treacherously out of her depth. As Maureen strives in desperation to piece together Ann's last days in order to save herself from a similar fate, the suspense ratchets up and Denise Mina secures her place among the top-ranking writers of hard-boiled crime fiction at work today.

3 out of 5 stars I Must Have Missed Something...............2004-08-25

Upon reading the reviews of this book, I quickly added Denise Mina to my "want to read" list. Particularly enjoying British/European mysteries, I was very happy to find EXILE. I certainly agree with another reviewer -- read GARNETHILL first as unlike other series novels, I became caught in the muddle and wrap-up of that book. That aside, yes it's very gritty, yes the characters are well written -- I just found the movement of the story at a snail's pace and while character development mysteries tend to move slower, I just found this one far too slow and not as riveting and exciting as I was led to believe. I'd still read another of Denise Mina's books but would not be as quick about it should it come down to one of her books and another's.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Successor to the Award Winning Garnethill.......2002-09-12

Maureen, the emotionally battered Glaswegian introduced in Garnethill, finds herself caught in a trap of depression and dispair, separated from nearly every important relationship in her life. One of the most important relationships she feels she losing is with her friend Lesley. So when Lesley asks her help in finding out what happened to a client of the shelter for abused women she agrees for the sake of Lesley and the client's husband, who appears to be a most unlikely batterer.

Many of the characters from Garnethill reappear including the sympathetic and unsympathetic officers of the law, Maureen's protective brother Liam, and Lynn his first girlfriend. New characters are introduced, notably Kilty Goldfarb, a disenchanted social worker and Vik, Maureen's new love interest.

The plot twists and turns between London and Glasgow, as Maureen tries to puzzle out exactly what happened to Ann Harris and why. Don't start this one late in the evening, it might keep you up most of the night!

    5 out of 5 stars Confirmation.......2002-07-16

I wasn't as impressed with Garnethill as all the praise had led me to believe i would be. However, Exile excorcises any doubts i might have had about her talent...here, in Denise Mina, is a first class writer. This book is a better effort, and the prose is of very high quality. There is absolutely brilliant description, and the evocation of the seedier side of life, in Glasgow in particular, is utterly compelling. Maureen O'Donnell is a likeable character, but it is nice that this book doesnt feature so heavily on her character.

The plot is good...the writing is blunt and brutal, but certainly does not lack an edge of compassion. (Like fellow british writer Mo Hayder...) It's effective and moving in that bluntness.

There is a great twist at the end which you wont see coming, and you will be left with your mouth watering for the next book in the Garnethill trilogy.

4 out of 5 stars Read GARNETHILL first, you'll be glad you did.......2002-01-08

I recommend for anybody to read GARNETHILL first before starting EXILE. In Denise Mina's latest novel she recaps the sequences of her previous novel and reveals who the killer was in that book. Some questions that I had from GARNETHILL were explained here.

In this latest work, Maureen is working for a woman's shelter and trying to gain control of her life. She investigates the death of Ann Harris, a former client from the Scottish center, who was found beaten to death in London. As in most mystery books, things are not quite what they seem and Maureen is way over her head.

I enjoyed this book, learning a bit about domestic abuse and women's shelters. Mina has a way with words while describing characters and locations. I only suggest to anyone who is unfamiliar with Mina's work to start with GARNETHILL before beginning EXILE. You will feel richer for it.

5 out of 5 stars gritty, grimy and great.......2001-06-12

The second in Glasgow author Denise Mina's projected trilogy ("Garnethill" won the John Creasey Award), "Exile" again features the driven, hard-drinking, damaged Maureen O'Donnell and the grimmer, grimier precincts of Glasgow.

The story concerns the murder of Ann Harris, a battered alcoholic who briefly resided at the women's shelter where Maureen reluctantly works. Agreeing to help her best friend, Maureen looks in on Harris' harassed husband, one of life's ..., who is, however, touchingly devoted to his four "weans." When Harris' body turns up in London, Jimmy goes to the top of the suspects list.

Partly to escape her own haunting problems - her sexually abusive father has returned to Glasgow and his proximity fills her with dread - Maureen goes to London when Ann's body surfaces there. She traces Ann's movements among the drug and alcohol addicted, and the violent traffickers in human weakness. The suspense builds as Maureen slowly gathers the pieces of Ann's messy life, crossing paths and swords with prey and predator.

The story is absorbing, gritty and well organized, the pace wonderfully irregular. But the heart of this novel is Mina's writing, her visceral evocations of people and place. Maureen is a complex knot of longings, intellect, fearlessness and terror. Nothing is simple.

Maureen's reaction to clueless, ... Jimmy: "He tried to smile at her, sliding his lips back, but his face was too tired to pull it off. He had threateningly sharp teeth, which slanted backwards into his mouth. They looked like a vicious little carnivore's, naturally selected because they slid deeper into the flesh when the victim resisted."

And this is the man she decides to champion. Maureen is no trusting soul. But she does yearn. After a fight with her boyfriend: "She wanted a nice boyfriend, she wanted kindness and respect and decency. She didn't want to spend her life with people she was suited to, she wanted to be with people like him."

Mina's prose is muscled, sometimes prickly and vulnerable, sometimes picturesquely hard-boiled: "The morning dragged by like a stranger's funeral." And always painterly: "The wind took on a shrill new viguor at the bus station, hurtling down the low streets, converging in the waiting area in front of the ticket building."

Though Mina's depiction of Glasgow is raw and dark, her heroine's rough edges protect a core of strength and her youthful vitality pumps out glimmers of hope. Denise Mina is a rare find.

I didn't think that you could have done better than "Hold you down", but girl this book was the bomb. I laugh at Delicious and I hated the Wellington's for the way the treated Mina. Rita and Bernice was a trip. I can picture them on stage, being Salt n Pepa. But I love Victor, and I love the way he doesn't judge a book by it's cover. I can see his sexy and fine body. The book was awesome... I really enjoy it. I suggest that everyone get this book. Keep it coming Keisha

My book review is on a book called Mina's Joint. Mina's Joint was a very interesting book. The main character in the book was named Mina. When they say don't judge a book by its cover, they must have been talking about Mina's Joint, because once I read the first page, I was hooked on it. It was such good book. Full of drama, passion anything you can imagine. Mina finds out the man she is about to marry didn't turn out the way she thought it would, he used to beat on her and on top of that she finds out that he likes blue eyed men, but she gets her revenge when girlfriend gets the whole thing on tape with a little help from her friends. While you are reading that book you would think this chick would never leave her fiancé. But it doesn't turn out that way. In walks in a fine dude named Victor from her past and makes everything better in her life.... I loved this book I have read this book about 2 times that's how good I thought it was. If I could I would read it all over again. I made connections with the book not as many but I did, you can always connect to a book like this. I connected to the fact that she was in a love triangle and didn't know who to pick or what to do with her life. At times people don't know what to do with their life I know I don't sometimes. I really wouldn't say that the book is important to the world because it's an average book on an average girl that goes through some tough times in her life, but in the long run it was all worth it. Everyone has probably been through something just like that or maybe even worse. But I would say that it's a good book that people should read. I would recommend this book to everybody to read because it was a really good book, and if you like books that would keep you thinking or guessing what is going to happen next, then Mina's Joint is the book for you.

    4 out of 5 stars Tickled.......2007-04-20

I enjoyed this book tremendously. Keisha... you did your thing girl. I was truly tickled with Mina's mother and Aunt Bernice to the fullest. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading urban lit.

5 out of 5 stars great thorough intro.......2006-01-17

A bit cutesy, but covers all the details, including details other books don't deal with.

    4 out of 5 stars A Fun Introduction.......2005-01-11

A fantastic and fun introduction to Sumo. I've already got my tickets for my second Basho next week and I'll have a lot better understanding of the sport because of this book.
However, its a bit out of date for current wrestlers and recent records. But that's all available online from the Sumo organization web site.
Also, its a good intro, but you'll have to look elsewhere for more detailed information and history.

4 out of 5 stars Great little "Big Book of Sumo".......2001-08-06

As a begining Sumo wrestler, who trains with 2 time World Lightweight Sumo champ Svetoslav Binev, I really liked this book. I found "The Big Book of Sumo" to be an awesome little book on the history and tradition of Sumo.

Unfortunately, it has nothing on the actual techniques used from the standpoint of a competing wrestler. Only descriptions of some names of common techniques from a fan's perspective.

Never-the-less, it's a great little "Big Book of Sumo." Don't get this book if you are looking for more than a very general description of sumo technique. Do get this book if you want to understand the art, history and tradition of Sumo.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......1999-08-03

I purchased this book a year ago. It is very easy to understand and has some realy fabulous pictures.

Mina Hall has done a great job in putting this together. I would recomend this to anyone who is interested in sumo.

5 out of 5 stars Getting up to speed on Sumo.......1999-04-23

I have been interested in Sumo, but was lost in understanding of the sport. Mina Hall not only knows her stuff, she is able to relay it in terms that are understandable. Now I have a new love for the sport from this easy book. The content of Hall's book is enough to make me feel like I know the sport. No longer will I wonder why they do those things before, during, and after the match. While I have read other books on the subject this is by far the best. Get it and learn Sumo.
