        Book Description

Carmen Laforet’s Nada ranks among the most important literary works of post-Civil War Spain. Loosely based on the author’s own life, it is the story of an orphaned young woman who leaves her small town to attend university in war-ravaged Barcelona.

Residing amid genteel poverty in a mysterious house on Calle de Aribau, young Andrea falls in with a wealthy band of schoolmates who provide a rich counterpoint to the squalor of her home life. As experience overtakes innocence, Andrea gradually learns the disquieting truth about the people she shares her life with: her overbearing and superstitious aunt Angustias; her nihilistic yet artistically gifted uncle Román and his violent brother Juan; and Juan’s disturbingly beautiful wife, Gloria, who secretly supports the clan with her gambling. From existential crisis to a growing maturity and resolve, Andrea’s passionate inner journey leaves her wiser, stronger, and filled with hope for the future.

The incomparable Edith Grossman’s vital new translation captures the feverish energy of Laforet’s magnificent story, showcasing its dark, powerful imagery, and its subtle humor. And Mario Vargas Llosa’s Introduction illuminates Laforet’s brilliant depiction of life during the early days of the Franco regime. With crystalline insight into the human condition, Carmen Laforet’s classic novel stands poised to reclaim its place as one of the great novels of twentieth-century Europe.

Joachim-Ernst Berendt has a great gift for synthesizing informaion. This book is a must read for anyone interested in harmony and understanding our place in the universe as part of the great expression of spirit. It will also appeal to those who prefer more practical information as to how sound and music has transcended and unified while informing those who play as well as the listener. I just love this book! I'm a yoga teacher and a singer and this book really touched me on all levels.

        4 out of 5 stars Nada Brahma.......2005-12-27

I read this book a little while ago and it completely transformed the way I perceive the world around me. This book showed me the power that sound has. While the book is primarily concerned with the mysticism of sound, he also relates the world around us to sound, and shows us how reliable and accurate our ears are when compared to our eyes.
Joachim-Ernst Berendt also gives listening tests in some of the chapters to give the reader an opportunity to develop their sense of hearing, which he says is being underused in our predominantly visual western culture.

I am a private detective and ever since reading this book, I have always tried to use sound equipment and techniques on my investigations. Since reading this book I have completely re-evaluated and structured the approach and conduct of my work for the better. Can't recommend it enough.

My intimate partner is a spriritual practitioner of the Way of Adidam. He is also a musician and chanter. He finds this book both exciting and fascinating. I deals with subtle and cosmic aspects of music, sound and the manifest universe. He has wanted it for a long time. I am happy to have finally found it for him.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely interesting and well written.......1998-11-21

This book explores the relationship between music, consciousness and the physical world. The author makes an interesting argument that objects in the physical world generally form into harmonious relationships, and he cites the movements of the planets, oxygen atoms in H20 and so forth as examples. This is well written and argued, not a purely metaphysical line.

Having described the harmony of the physical world at atomic and astronomical levels, he goes on to consider Nada Brahma, an Indian Yoga technique of 'listening to the internal sound current'. The technique consists essentially of blocking ones ears and listening to the 'sound currents' which do actually come when one performs the technique (I've tried it). By meditating on these sound currents, one is taken into deeper levels of concentration. This 'inner music' is related to the concept of the music of the spheres, and this notion is investigated historically.

Overall, the book is an excellent read, and I just regret I lent my copy to someone and never got it back. Maybe I'll have to get the next edition from Amazon.com, as it seems to be on their website. If you're a musician and want something spiritual, this meditation might be for you!

        5 out of 5 stars Implementing Improvement.......2000-09-15

As a manager in an international investment bank, I found the methodologies suggested by the Kakabadse's eminently applicable. The material has facilitated a shift in thinking from merely managing teams to leading them- with commensurately measurable improvements in performance- ideas that work! This book follows in the tradition of kakabadse's previous work and presents cutting edge academic findings in a practical manner. Any manager who is interested in making the leap to "leader" in a manner appropriate to their organisation should view this as requisite reading.

        5 out of 5 stars It was a pleasure.......2000-09-14

The book Essence of Leadership is a 'must' for every manager or manager-to-be, and all students of economic science; but it is also a great source of information and insight for any person interested in the technique and philosophy of leadership. With convincing competence the authors highlight the two basic kinds of leadership: corporate leadership and manager leaders. The survey on which the book is based covered 8,000 organizations across 14 countries. As a sociologist, I was impressed by the lack of prejudice on part of the authors who dismiss commonplaces and defend their results objectively, claiming for example that gender is irrelevant to achieving success as a leader. It is an excellent book I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The best leadership book ever.......2000-09-09

This book covers every aspect of leadership styles, technique, reserch and praxis. A must.

        1 out of 5 stars Oh please!.......1999-11-17

Kakabadse really annoyed me. He is not only arrogant, he is ignorant! This guy tries to tell us what are the factors of leadership success in some kind of typical 'politically manipulated organisation'. He is devoted to status quo! His ethics are very dubious and when he tries to explain them, he does so with an appallingly trivial justification of them. This guy made a mistake in his career choice, he should be working for the tories! (and maybe he does). Lost money: I want it back!

5 out of 5 stars A very humorous and vivid tale.......2004-01-30

I read this book in Spanish. For all of those that can read it in this language I truly recommend it. It is very hard to interpret the Cuban lingo and it looses its flavor when it is translated.

Overall this a great short novel that depicts the cruel and harsh reality that the Cuban people have gone and continue to go through.

        4 out of 5 stars Latin Lover.......2002-03-18

Zoe Valdes was born in Cuba in 1959 and fled to France in 1995. Overnight, she has vaulted to the first rank of contemporary Latin American novelists. "Yocandra in the Paradise of Nada" (Arcade Publishing: 1997) was her first novel published in English. "I Gave You All I Had" (Arcade Publishing: 1999), which existed in manuscript as early as 1995, and "My Father's Foot" (Planeta: 2002) have recently added to her reputation.

Told in the first person, "Yocandra" is a brief, rich, wrenching, serio-comic, episodic, film-influenced, belle-lettristic piece of performance art, in which the narrator's voice is, happily, always present.

Thrust out of a magic-realist Purgatory in a cycle of petition and rejection, Yocandra is confined to Castro's Cuba. A person's name may be important, but apparently not in Cuba. Yocandra exchanges one name, the name of her country, for the name of a muse in a failed effort to buy love. All of the other major characters in the book lack proper names. Her two lovers bear nicknames -- the Traitor and the Nihilist -- which reflect their relationship to the Cuban state. Like characters in a Bergman film, they meet and play a game of chess together while Yocandra suffers a spiritual crisis. Her father, a Communist Party hack, destroys a treasure trove of homoerotic art because it offends his orthodox machismo views. Her girlfriend, the Worm, escapes to Spain, where her life with a belching fat man becomes as strained as that of a character in an Almodovar film. Yocandra's lost love, the Lynx, stumbles upon a nighttime sailing expedition to Miami, willingly joins in, and alone survives a storm when he lashes himself to stray timber and floats free.

This is a Cuba in which Communist ideology and bureaucracy have bred poverty, corruption, and disconnects in the extreme. In the background of Yocandra's story, neighborhood vigilantes search excrement-strewn dumpsters for signs of political disloyalty, bicyclists who pedal to forget are branded loose women, the data entry clerk at Yocandra's literary journal creates her database anew each day when the power cuts out before she saves her work, everyone barters everything of value for what passes for food, and the sea pounds relentlessly and the sun continues hypnotically to shine.

Sex plays a prominent part in "Yocandra." (Valdes has said that, growing up fatherless and without money in Cuba, she had sex instead of toys.) Devotees of erotic fiction told from a woman's perspective may appreciate the clinical description of Yocandra's lovemaking with the Nihilist, whose perfect body includes a perfectly used thirteen-inch tool. But if the scene is erotic, it is not because there is any affection, much less love, passing between the two. Sex without love -- like literature without words, pride without accomplishment, work without labor, birth without creation -- is a staple of Yocandra's daily life in Cuba.

This is a provocative book, written with style by an author to contend with.

        5 out of 5 stars Super.......2000-04-20

Vrlo interesantna knjiga koju bih preporucila najpre zenskoj publici. Nabijena erotikom, puna emocija ljubavi i besa. Upoznajte kako se zivi na Kubi.

4 out of 5 stars Incredibly real account of life in Cuba in the mid 90s.......1999-03-24

Zoe Valdes has been able to articulate, in a literary fasion, what I have sought to do for the last five years since I spent a year a half in Cuba and left unable to express what I had seen, heard and experienced. She highlights the contradictions brilliantly, illustrates how the regime has suppressed individuality and personal initiative and has produced an island of crazy old fools, (like her mother) men who can only repeat the same paranoid line over and over, (like the great leader) hyper-sexualized youth, (what else is there to do? How else to relax?) prostitutes, prisoners, young people for whom the threat of sharks and drowning is better than staying on the island, the wretching pain of losing all your friends to exile, the Hernia (what a great metaphor!). There is so much in this little book -- I would like to re-read it, and recommend it to anyone who wants to know what life is like on the island in this decade. This book, reflecting life in Cuba, is very, very sad and somewhat hopeless yet it must be read.

4 out of 5 stars A Sensual Story of Survival in post-revolutionary Cuba.......1997-12-19

Her mother, then nine months pregnant, trekked to Havana for the big rally on May 1, 1959 and when she went into labour in the middle of Fidel Castro¹s speech and had to be carried away, Che Guevara rushed to her side and draped a Cuban flag over her belly. Her proud father named her Patria ³the fatherland², but by the time Patria became an adult living in a country where food was something barely more than a dream, she chucked her patriotic name and officially changed it to Yocandra, a character in her fat, old boyfriend¹s novel. Yocandra in the Paradise of Nada is a novel of personal survival in post revolutionary Cuba. It¹s power comes from its snapshot images of Cuba ravished by hurricanes and famine--the latter being caused by political indecisiveness, disastrous economic planning and the US boycott. The novel takes no sides, politically speaking. Instead it exposes the restlessness of the disgruntled youth born after the revolution and the nostalgia of their idealistic parents. The author, Zoe Valdes, contrasts the troubled youth trapped in a nightmarish reality with the stoic, idealism of those who supported Castro and longed for the revolution. Caught in a time warp, they struggle to achieve a sense of dignity lost in dreams which never materialise in Castro¹s Cuba. Here survival boils down to the two most basic needs: food and sex. Yocandra definitely leaves an impact

        Book Description

By turns funny, romantic, erotic, and sad, this evocative novel brilliantly recreates the landscape of late adolescence, when friendships seem eternal and loves reincarnate. Set in Arkansas but first published in The Netherlands, Clicking Beat on the Brink of Nada quickly won praise from reviewers and readers across Europe and North America. The back cover blurb written by the late William S. Burroughs reads: "A haunting vision of young friendship shattered by an outrageously cruel world. Keith Hale's novel aches with adolescent first loves. It is tender, funny, and true." The book was published in the U.S. as Cody and remained on the amazon.com bestseller list for gay titles a year after it went out of print. Now Clicking Beat on the Brink of Nada is back in print with its original European front cover and title.

5 out of 5 stars So glad this is back in print........2007-03-21

This is one of those books that stays with you a lifetime like Catcher in the Rye. I first read it while studying abroad in London where it had something of a cult following I think. It certainly was popular among the youth there at the time and it seemed like everyone I knew had read it. It's just a very unusual novel with characters you'll never forget, people you wish you knew. It was becoming impossible to find a copy for under $50 so it really needed to be reprinted. I've given so many copies away to friends over the years it's good to know now it is widely available at a reasonable price.

4 out of 5 stars The depth of true love.......2007-01-03

The narrator, seventeen year old Steven Trottingham Taylor lives with his mother Helen, his father having been killed just before he was born, and his fourteen year old half brother Freddy. His father was an active socialist, and his mother still holds to these ideals, Steven was named Trottingham with the intention he be called Trotsky in homage to these beliefs. Used to moving home frequently and the family has recently moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where Helen Taylor has taken a teaching position at the local university.
Trotsky is pretty sure he is gay, especially following a failed attempt at seduction by Sarah whom he first met at the State Employment Service. At his new school Trotsky becomes aware of Cody, a charismatic and striking looking well built youth with soulful blue eyes and intriguing orange/blond long flopping hair, with whom he shares some classes. When they eventually meet face to face it is the start of a friendship that eventually develops in to something very special.
Trotsky is no ordinary lad; he has a good open relationship with his mother, and is especially fond of his half brother and takes a positive interest in him and his well being. In turn Freddy holds Trotsky in very high esteem, looking upon him as protective older brother and a father figure. He is socially aware and is interested in politics, poetry and literature, and is prone to exchanging poems with his friends including Cody.
The friendship between Trotsky is Cody becomes an especially close one, such that they can almost communicate on a spiritual level, yet it becomes clear to them both that while Trotsky would like to enjoy a physical relationship, Cody being straight claims he cannot reciprocate. Yet their love for one another becomes such that eventually Cody does make a move. By that time Trotsky is already enjoying a loving relationship with Freddy's best friend Mark.
Eventually tragedy strikes with profound consequences.
This is a very enjoyable story about friendship, love and understanding. It is also a story with a definite socialist leaning, and happily makes political point. The main characters come over as positive and appealing, and it is particularly pleasing that the account avoids some of the clichés found in many young gay love stories.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure!!! A Coming of Age Novel Many Can Relate With!.......2004-08-25

I stumbled on this novel by chance, hoping for an easy summer read to hold me over until another novel I had been waiting for arrived. I quickly realized what a true gem I had as Trotsky's life in a new school in Little Rock unfolded. The depth of human emotion between Cody and Trostky is real and their connection can be felt by the reader. I don't want to ruin the unexpected and compelling ending, but it captures you and you feel what Trostky and Cody feel. This is a very short novel and easily could have gone one for another 100 pages. I would have liked to get to know some of the characters better. I think there are many similarities to Patricia Nell Warren's Front Runner here in this book. While the final pages offer a quick glipse into the future for our young heroes, I'd love to see a follow-up. I think this is the author's only published novel. That's a shame. If you have the good fortune to run across Cody, read it, enjoy it, and tell a friend. Cody and Trotsky will always live on in our hearts.

4 out of 5 stars Good novel about gay youth.......2003-03-07

There are two books in gay romance fiction that I consider to be the Holy Grails of that genre: E.M. Forster's "Maurice" and Patricia Nell Warren's "The Front Runner." All other gay romance novels, whether they are "coming out" stories or not, must be weighed against those two stupendous novels.

Cody is not either, but it is certainly a worthy, well-written, and believable romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and found them real and believable. Oddly, I found myself recapturing my own youth while reading the book, because so much of the story rang true to my own experiences. This is not one of the most multi-layered character driven novels I've ever read, no. It's a very good quick read though and one I do recommend. The ending is definitely not predictable and THAT alone is worth spending a couple of hours getting to know these engaging characters.

Montalban is not only one of the great spanish (some would insist "Catalan") living writer, but he's also one of it's most dedicated critic. Better-known for it's mysteries involving the strange and disconcerting cop, Carvalho, Montalban has shown in a few other books that he can also master other subjects like history. Most of his non-mystery novels involve some catalan characters in one way or another and this one is no exception. This is the story of the ascension of the Borgia family from obscurity to papacy, and back. Not knowing much else about this particular family of Renaissance Italy, I learned - amongst many other things - that the Borgias were catalan immigres to a family-obsessed and power-hungry Rome. Told with an extremely sophisticated twist, wonderful language, much details and imagination, this novel is pure pleasure. And in the style of some of his other works, there is always that particularly sardonic view of history, its leaders, its heroes, and ultimately some of its major lessons. Namely, that men are not exactly as good a species as they pretend to be.
