Tiki bar mixology is a lost art--but the Grog Log rescues it. A twenty-page introduction traces the history of Polynesian Pop, then teaches you everything you need to know about how to make the Grog Log's eighty tropical drink recipies. Many of these recipies have never before been published anywhere--including vintage "lost" recipies by Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic, and long-gone Polynesian restaurants from the island of Manhattan to the islands of Hawaii. Profusely illustrated with vintage tiki menu graphics from the '50 and '60s, with cover art by famed Exotica artist Bosko.

I am a cocktail snob and emmersed in tiki culture and the Atomic Age. Get this fantastic tome, a bottle of Falernum and Orgeat and your bar stuff, plus my Grogalizer found on my Swank Pad site and you are making the best cocktails on earth. No one should be without this book!

5 out of 5 stars The ONLY Tiki Recipe book you'll ever need.......2005-04-18

Joe Bob Briggs from UPI called this "the best bartender's guide for tropical and rum drinks ever published". That, my friends, is an understatement. Forget those fancy and useless trendy tiki books that have to be gussied up with Shag illustrations and glossy printing, if you've already bought those: use 'em as coasters for the wonderfully entertaining and informative "Grog Log". From a pair who can navigate the tikiphyte through the Singapore Slings and arrows of the sugary crap that give tropical drinks a bad name. Easily worth 5 times the cover price, "The Grog Log" and the follow-up "Intoxica!" are the only Tiki drink books you'll ever need or want.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible.......2004-02-07

Alright, I'm going to keep it short and to the point. I'm a Tiki geek, I've got every book related to the subject and, along with The Book of Tiki, this book and it's sequal Intoxica are the Holy Trinity of the Tiki Religion. There is no better book on Tropical Drinks anywhere, ever. Buy it. Now.

5 out of 5 stars One of a pair: Tropical immortality........2004-01-31

I essentially have the same review for both this book and Berry's follow-up book, Intoxica: Jeff (Beachbum) Berry is, without question, the most learnéd authority on "tiki" beverages alive today. The cheap production characteristics of the book in no way detract from that fact, and it will be evident to both drink historians and harkeners after the tiki experience alike. Well-considered recipes, delicious and examined minutely=buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: Self Serving Review ..........2002-04-24

Aloha! I am the editor of this fine publication (and the owner of more than one completely stained, well worn copy) and wanted to throw in a quick pitch about the Grog Log's place amidst the bevy of "Trendy Tiki Drink Books of Questionable Quality".
If you are a Tiki Freak / Cocktail Enthusiast who legitimately wants to experience these classic recipes in their original, robust forms, the Grog Log is the only way to go. I sought out Jeff Berry after seeing his original self-published Grog Log five or six years ago. I was intensely facinated by these old restaurants and all of the amazingly complex creations they served. No matter how many modern (or vintage) drink books I came across none captured the true nature of these original (mostly) rum drinks (with the possible exception of some of the classics in Trader Vic's own line or the Hawaii Kai Cookbook). Jeff's self-published, xeroxed zine was the only authentic source.
We decided to team up to do an expanded mass produced version of the book to make it available to a wider (although niche) audience. Since that time (1998) the Tiki craze has exploded and more Tiki-focused drink books have been released. Don't get me wrong ... I own each of them myself ... for the most part the art, design, and production make them interesting ... but for actual recipe content they are sadly lacking. If you really want to dial up the way back machine and sip with the Masters (Trader Vic, Donn Beach, etc.) the Grog Log is for you.
NEWSFLASH: Jeff and I are just about done with a sequel to the Grog Log titled "Intoxica!" to be released in the Summer of '02. Check back often to Amazon.com as they'll be selling it once it's available. Mahalo!

In this award-winning sequel, the story we thought we knew in Ring is broken down and twisted into a new reality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ever Widening Gyre.......2006-02-19

In Spiral, the sequel to Suzuki's Ring, we are to discover that the hoped for (if uncomfortable) resolution e promised at the end of Ring is not to come to pass. Instead we discover that there is a whole layer below Sadako's efforts at vengeance and that a darker and more haunting motive drives the story - one that threatens more than just those who watched the videotape.

Dr. Mitsuo Ando is haunted by the horrible accident that killed his son and destroyed his marriage. Still unable to make sense of his own life, he is called on to perform the autopsy of his friend Ryuji Takayama, who played a vital role in Ring. What he finds is that death was caused by a coronary blockage and that there are signs of a smallpox like viral infection. Odder is that the body seems to expel a piece of the newspaper used to fill out the thoracic cavity. Ryuji and Dr. Ando used to be addicted to ciphers, and a string of numbers on the paper can be decoded to spell R I N G.

Ando is drawn to Mai, Ryuji's student and lover, who suddenly disappears. As he investigates Ando discovers for himself that all of the victims of the videotape died similarly - all deaths seemingly by a viral infection and exposure to a videotape. Spiral thus introduces another, more unnerving idea. The Spiral is DNA and the theme of the book is mutation or, in broader terms, change.

This book is every bit as solid as Ring, but it pulls the rug out from under the reader by shifting from Ring's story of curses and ghosts to hard science fiction with just a dash of mysticism. As readers, we often have trouble shifting gears like that - stories that suddenly become something else take us out of our comfort zone. The Japanese seem more adept at accepting this kind of narrative 'mutation,' since the real core of the story, the focus on individuals who must make dark choices is still constant.

I liked Spiral a good deal, once I got over the change of pace. In its way, it is as well written as Ring, although it seems to have fared worse when converted to film. That is a shame, because the book will get less attention than it should as a result.

5 out of 5 stars good sequel to "the ring".......2006-01-04

This book couldn't be more different than the Japanese and American versions of RING 2. Again, it takes the story from a scientific approach. The virus has mutated and there is no need for videos to pass it to others: Sadako is stronger than ever. These series make us think about the origins or viruses and also the origins of human life. How everything is prone to change and how we can be the mere product of an accident.
I just started reading "Loop" and it seems to be a great conclusion for this trilogy...

3 out of 5 stars 'Ring' sequel disappoints ..........2005-12-22

After thoroughly enjoying 'Ring' I had high expectations of its sequel, 'Spiral'. Unfortunately I was mostly disappointed in number of ways. The first half of the book is consumed with a very slow narrative and a very detailed synopsis of 'Ring' (..okay, perhaps this is good for those who don't remember it or haven't read it, which in the latter case would be very foolish). However the second half the book catches up steam and almost regains the original book's "shock and horror". Alas, the ending is rather wacky; it seems little more than a coming attraction to the final book in the series ('Loop').

Now as for the story, it is pretty much impossible to divulge much without spoiling it for prospective readers. Let's just say the book literally carries forward with the 'Ring' story but this time infamous videotape does far more damage. The author creates a psychological/biological link of what the videotape actually transmits and .... nasty stuff. Believable? Even the most naive person in the world would find this story completely incredulous.

Oh, I should add that I found the English translation of this book to be rather crude. I suspect 'Ring' was just as poorly translated but since the story was so compelling I didn't notice it.

Bottom line: probably a worthwhile read for fans of 'Ring' but only just.

Ando is drawn to Mai, Ryuji's student and lover, but before the relationship advanced she disappears. As Ando investigates he discovers that all of the victims of the videotape died similarly - all deaths caused by a viral infection apparently created by the videotape, and later by a narrative of the events in Ring. But this is just the completion of Ring's story arc. Spiral introduces another, more unnerving idea. The Spiral is DNA and the theme of the book is mutation or, in broader terms, change.

This book is every bit as solid as Ring, but it pulls the rug out from under the reader by shifting from Ring's story of curses and ghosts to hard science fiction with just a dash of mysticism. 4 out of 5 stars The Genetics Behind The Ring.......2005-11-05

Spiral is the 2nd in the series of Ring books. This installment takes place shortly after the first book with a pathologist performing an autopsy on one of the last victims. The story isn't going for the creepy shocks and awes of the first book, but goes a little more into the reason behind it all. The fates of the last books characters are explained. You find out what the ring basically is and how it works in more detail as the story goes on. It has a Michael Crichton feel to it with all the scientific explainations going on over the course of the book. It's not boring or too stuffy by any means it kept my interest enough to finish the book in a few evenings. The story does pick up towards the end and becomes more of the horror story you would expect. With a few comebacks of characters in the first book, there is enough here to keep you wanting to know more about this whole Ring thing. Can't wait to read loop and see how it all ends.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice coverage.......2007-02-16

This book is a nice cross section of the Tikis of yore, with a focus on the food rather than the drinks (though there's a few). My only disappointment with this book is that the its fabrication is less than spectacular. Other than that, the content is great. When I cook with it, I'll probably just copy the receipes as to not risk damaging it.

5 out of 5 stars Intoxica! & companion book Grog Log.......2002-08-02

These two volumes will make you never want to order a high priced, poorly mixed, tropical drink from the bar again!! I highly recommend these books to anyone who wants to have a cocktail from an era when making a drink was an art form. Why I say, "Buy both of these books!!" -

1. Vintage tropical drinks from the 1930's to 1970's featuring Don the Beachcomber.
2. Has easy to follow receipes, a strenghth scale so you dont get too tipsy, & a handy conversion table that makes measuring so simple.
3.W/ just a few ingredients, you can make a variety of drinks, so you don't need to spend your whole paycheck getting started.
4.Calls for fresh fruit juice...squeezing your own lemons & limes is fun & good excerise :) Seriously...fresh juice makes the difference!!
5.I had Mai Tais while I was in the Hawaiian islands. Actually, I had one at every bar & hotel I stopped at ;) hee hee, but NONE compared to the two vintage receipes found in these logs.

Kudos to the cool cats involved w/ creating this great collection!!
I am eagerly awaiting Volume #3

Book Description

The millions of New Yorker cartoon fans (and puzzlers, too) will exult in this ingenious, first-ever collection of puzzles and games that feature the magazine’s cartoons as clues.

Designed to offer a challenge to puzzlers of all levels, this collection of 100 crosswords, acrostics, caption scrambles, observation puzzles, and more is absolutely unique—it’s the first-ever puzzle collection to feature New Yorker cartoons. Presented in an extremely user-friendly oversized spiral format, the book provides hours and hours of interactive entertainment— just bring your own pencil and brain power!

The puzzles themselves are ingenious—new and different kinds of brain-teasers that use the cartoons of The New Yorker in a fresh way, encouraging the agile reader to think like a New Yorker cartoonist. The introduction is a conversation between two masters: the cartoon editor of the New Yorker and the puzzle editor of The New York Times, and it sheds fascinating light on the connection between cartoons and puzzles.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Mental Stroll for cartoon fans & amateur puzzlers.......2007-04-17

I love word puzzles though I'm not a serious puzzler - I do a few crosswords a week and have owned maybe three puzzle books as an adult. I am, however, a big cartoon fan, though honestly I've been more FoxTrot & Calvin than I am the New Yorker. So, my favorite puzzles are cryptograms with cartoons. Don't find them much - but when I searched specifically for this, I discovered this book.

I enjoy the New Yorker Book of Cartoon Puzzles and Games (and have purchased a second copy for a friend) because the combo of puzzle and cartoon has proven very relaxing - I involve myself in a semi-hard puzzle, but then find a laugh waiting for me once it's solved. New Yorker cartoons do typically contain some of the least expected twists, and I found that here.

However, I don't think a serious puzzle person would be happy with this book, unless he were interested in the New Yorker cartoons. I say this only because the puzzles range from easy to medium difficulty for an adult. (A teen or younger might enjoy more of a challenge.) I still recommend this though - for a more relaxed puzzler like myself it's a good mental stroll.

Though not typically a history buff, I found it a pleasant surprise that the editors included the history of New Yorker cartoons, and with it a history of the U.S, WITHIN quite a few puzzles. Several times you are asked to place the puzzles in the correct time period (and the New Yorker puzzles go back at least to the 1920's) or even with the correct author/cartoonist. The puzzles are just challenging enough to give me a think (similar to a midweek newspaper crossword perhaps) but not overly hard. And there is an ABUNDANCE OF GREAT CARTOONS - usually five or six to each puzzle and often grouped in interesting ways/topics.

But what of those cryptograms? Good news is that they were well done, and with increasing difficulty; Disappointment is that there were only three pages of cryptograms while other types of puzzles were represented more. It does seem that the editors missed out on utilizing the perfect collaboration of crypts and cartoons.

I give it a 4 - enjoyed the cartoon aspect, most puzzles fun but some just too easy for an adult. Still worth the stroll.

5 out of 5 stars I've never had a better book of puzzles!.......2007-02-13

A wide variety of different styles of puzzles, each with the payoff of several very good New Yorker cartoons, makes this book a blast to play with. I work hard to limit myself to only a couple of puzzles each time I pick it up (and so far I've refused to share the book with the gift-giver.) I've enjoyed it so much, I'm buying a copy for my mother for her birthday.

5 out of 5 stars Brand New.......2007-01-10

5 out of 5 stars Hey,all you puzzle nuts...give this one a look-see!.......2006-11-13

I was just cruising through my Big Box Bookstore to see what was appearing on the shelves for the upcoming Christmas season. In the Games section ,between a bunch of Crossword Puzzle books and what is becoming a flood of Sudoku and other number puzzle books,I spotted this little Gem.Most people who do crosswords know of Will Shortz of the NY Times Crossword puzzle fame,Robert Mankoff of Games Magazine and the famous New Yorker Magazine's Cartoons. Well, all these are combined and with some great "Thinking Outside the Box" have come up with a puzzle book that will entertain and challenge you. Some of the other reviewers have made reasonable attempts to describe these puzzles;so I won't try. What I suggest is to search it out in the store and get a feel for them.
This book is just the thing needed for those who have become obsessed with those Sudoku puzzles, have been doing nothing but crosswords for years, or even those who have never done much in the way of puzzles.
I'll tell you one thing;if you like puzzles, and who doesn't,and also like cartoons, and who doesn't;then you'll love this latest addition to the world of puzzles.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting cartoon and puzzle combo.......2006-09-27

Is this a book of New Yorker cartoons or a puzzle book? Well, it's a little of both, and the result is a novel way to laugh and exercise your brain at the same time. Most of the 83 puzzles consist of cartoons that are missing words, captions, or picture components. By figuring out the missing elements and sometimes combining them with acrostics, crossword puzzles, or other word grids, the cartoon humor is revealed.

For the most part, the puzzles are of only moderate difficulty, although there are a few difficult ones (at least for me) that involve matching a cartoon with the decade in which it was created or matching cartoons from early and late in a cartoonist's career. Frequent puzzle solvers will recognize many of the familiar puzzle types from Games Magazine and other media that Puzzability publishes in. The foreword to the book contains a casual and loosely coupled conversation between New Yorker cartoon editor Robert Mankoff and New York Times puzzle editor Will Shortz.

This is an entertaining book that you'll hate to throw away when it's been completed because of all the witty cartoons it contains. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great instruction.......2007-06-12

This book is really great. My son picked it out as something he wanted because Spiderman was on the cover. I would never have thought to buy it. The content is great. It takes you step by step in drawing. It all starts with the stick figure with ball joints. This may seem dumb, but it is essential. I have been poor at drawing a body or figure, but after using the starting point of the stick figure and then adding more to it, I could not believe how well it turned out. I still only at the beginning too. Lots more to learn from it! This is a great way to teach my son how to draw at an early age. The superhero tie in is perfect, but the content is top notch.

4 out of 5 stars Great for kids!.......2007-02-06

I make my living as an artist and am a lover of comic book and cartoon art. This book is a great introduction for children of any age who want to learn to draw superheroes and comics. It keeps the concepts fairly simple. My kids love it. I believe they have done all the exercises in the book and are ready for something a little more in depth...like maybe "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way."

2 out of 5 stars Good for young artists only. More serious artists left wanting more........2005-10-08

This book is good for young artists and young artists only. If you're a kid who just wants to enhance your doodling skills then buy this book! The markers it comes with are water based, cheap, and nothing like what the pros use. If you are over 13 or you are young but want to become a very serious artist do not buy this book! you should buy: How To Draw the Marvel Way by Stan Lee. That book is quite a bit more advanced and involved for drawing your favorite Marvel characters and for creating your own characters.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Drawing Books Ever Written.......2003-06-22

When I started out with this book, I was a clumsy, struggling artist, who knew nothing of muscle layout, stick figures, how to draw hands: mostly nothing. I had been illustrating my comic books with simple cartoon figures for some years.
After purchasing this book, in literally two weeks after I started reading, it my drawing skill increased three-fold! My simple cartoon characters found life in incredibly illustrated figures and costumes, bringing to life new characters in my excitement to draw new things.

This book is not just another drawing book; in fact, I have never seen anything like it. It doesn't just teach you to draw in the Marvel style, it kick-starts your unique artstyle. So in just a couple years, one will have almost indefinitely recognized their own way of drawing detailed figures.

Not just an average drawing book, this is a drawing book that shouldn't be passed up. This is the epitome of a wonderful drawing book for beginners. An enthusiastic 5/5!

5 out of 5 stars Great art book for art class........2003-01-05

I brought this book to help me with an art project. With the book's help I got a 98 on the project. It gives steps on how to draw many marvel characters like from, Spider-man, Rogue, Storm, and many more. A great book for beginners of all ages.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-08-04

This is such an awesome book! It is great for anyone who likes manga that has comedy, love, some fighting, and a great story. My only disappointment is that there are only 2 volumes.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure.......2007-07-14

This manga was pure joy.

The artwork is wonderful and different, the paneling is comprehensible, and the story itself is gold. Sure, other mangas hold romance between a demon and some 'holier' person (whether it be human or not), but the heroine, Yayoi, is not a chip off the old box. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's tired of weepy main characters... Thank goodness Yayoi is different.

I would say this is one of my more favored mangas. I highly recommend you buy it if you're into romance, demons, and great art.

4 out of 5 stars A tale about a black cat and a magical girl.......2007-04-10

So my biggest draw to Mugen Spiral was the fact that there are only two volumes in the series. Yeah! I won't be waiting three years to find out how the story ends this time. Overall the art is very good and though the story seemed rushed at times I still enjoyed it none the less. If you like Inu Yasha you will probably like Mugen Spiral as it has simalar themes.

4 out of 5 stars Promising premise almost delivers.......2007-01-31

This magical high school girl meets demon tale brings both Her Majesty's Dog and Demon Diary to mind and might appeal to fans of those series. Yayoi, 78th Head of the Suzuka clan, can control the 108 spirits of the Realm of the Dead. Ura, a demon prince, wants to devour her, thereby attaining her great power for himself. The premise is intriguing but I found the manga to suffer from lack of character development (primarily Yayoi, who doesn't seem to have any quirks or personality). I also wanted to see more of the 108 spirits Yayoi controls. I mean, what's the point of having so many when we won't get to see all of them before the series ends?

This manga appears to be a two-shot. This book advertised volume 2 as being the final one and I rather expected the series to run longer.

The artwork, which I haven't mentioned yet, is gorgeous and worth the price of the book.

Though I expected more, I'm still looking forward to volume 2!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Falling Heartbeats.......2007-08-23

Much like the previous reviews, my issue with this volume is the lack of conclusion to the story. Perhaps the author/artist wanted a hanging ending to allow readers to make up their own storyline from there, but it's unsatisfying all the same. Nothing happened with Ouga, except he was possessed by his own darkness and carried away by a character we learn nothing about {except that he's strong in his element...big development there}.

Yes, the mini-stories inspired some writing of my own and they were swaying in their manner to develop the relationship between Yayoi and Ura, but they're just after story extras. I was still fidgeting about the chopped off plotline to truly enjoy them. I can't give the product more than 3 stars because I don't think that's a good way to end a story. Not that I'm an expert or acclaimed critic, but I was on pins and needles waiting for this volume and I was not left with the racinf heartbeat I was hoping for.

3 out of 5 stars So much potential that was wasted..........2007-08-21

I own both volumes so I was looking forward to how this would conclude. The author must have been given a very short run because this volume is very likely to leave readers frustrated. The various storylines introduced in the first volume were never really resolved. A battle that seemed rather climatic at the end of the first volume fell flat. While it is nice to see the characters develop feelings, we are left with ministories instead of actual resolutions.

Will Ura save his father? Who was the mysterious man with Ouga? How will this relationship between Yayoi and Ura end? You won't find out in this concluding volume of Mugen Spiral.

4 out of 5 stars And...?.......2007-08-15

I was looking forward to this book so much. However, I was dissapointed by how it ended. The Ouga storyline ended extremely abruptly, and the author made it seem like she would continue it after the battle, but it just stopped. After that, it's all just little mini-stories, concentrating on the relationship between the two main characters. Still, it was still very cute, and I liked how the author developed the feelings between the two. The art is still gorgeous, and I really hope to see more of this author's work.
