Predictable and Corny.......2007-08-21
I just finished up this book for my book club, so will try very hard to be objective. Here were my biggest issues with the book:
1. The plot was transparent, I could have told you exactly what was going to happen from about page 30.
2. The dialogue was painful and contrived, not at all natural.
3. The main character has some serious questions about and issues with God - understandably, considering her circumstances. However, by the end of the book, it's all better. People who have that many issues with their higher being don't just get past them.
This is possibly the worst book I've read this year. It was painful and trite. So disappointed that I wasted my time on it.
Thought Provoking.......2007-08-05
Fast read. Have you ever wondered about a past relative and your connections with him or her? ...the similarities? ...or wanting to reach back and ask for advice?
Phoebe retreated to the home she grew up in to soul search, to try to come to terms with her own life. She finds her great-aunt's memory book and diary and is astounded on the similarities to her own life. She, also, learns of a family secret. In coming to terms with this secret and becoming acquainted with Great Aunt Phoebe, she finds herself and strength to do what she needs to.
There are strong Christian undertones but which could be adopted to whichever face of God you may believe in. This book brings up questions that we may all have encountered, like, "Where is God/dess NOW, when I need him/her most?"
Great read. It's really made me think in terms of my own life and challenges.
Fabulous read!.......2005-09-30
What a wonderful story! I have to admit, from the title, I was expecting something a little "hokey" or "homespun"--which wouldn't be bad, since I like both hokey and homespun. :-) But this book is neither. Phoebe, our heroine, is wonderful: a perfect blend of strength and weakness, she has her own set of nagging worries in her life, a sense of something being "missing," and yet she doesn't whine or wimp out when it comes to facing these challenges (as so many heroines do). The "supporting cast" is wonderful as well, and the time travel elements are handled skillfully and smoothly. The only change I would have made in this book would have been to omit the final "bonus" part that they gave us as part of the book club edition...I thought the section with Phoebe's mother's perspective weakened, rather than strengthened, the book. But that's a small detail compared to the overall experience of this great story. Pick this one up!

One of the best reads of my year..........2002-09-28
The Memory Book by Penelope Stokes -
The Memory Book is a tragic story of family secrets and how those secrets affect the generations to follow. What I loved about this novel was how intricately Ms. Stokes linked family members to each other though their paths never crossed. I literally gasped aloud at the twist in this plot. Everything in this novel fits perfectly together, making it one of the best reads of my year.

Book Description
Left for dead in a dumpster, private investigator Benny Cooperman becomes his own client in his most puzzling mystery yet.
Benny is recovering in a Toronto hospital from a serious blow to the head. He has a condition called alexia sine agraphia; in layman’s terms, it means he can still write but cannot read. And his memory has been affected too: Although he can quote lines from his high-school production of Twelfth Night, he finds himself brushing his teeth with his shaving cream. Even his girlfriend’s name—Anna Abraham—continues to elude him.
When Benny learns that he was found unconscious beside a dead woman, he figures he must have been close to solving a case. With Anna working as field agent and two Toronto cops reluctantly sharing their discoveries, Benny pieces together the events that led to a murder—and his own injuries.
Customer Reviews:
"Memory Books" is especially recommended to mystery buffs.......2007-04-11
Co-narrated by Ron Halder and Donna White, "Memory Books" by Canadian mystery writer Howard Engel is the story of small-town private investigatory Benny Cooperman who, after being left for dead from a blow to the head by an unknown assailant, wakes up in a hospital and in the middle of a mystery. All Benny can remember is that he was close to figuring out a mystery but can't remember anything else - including the name of his girlfriend, Anna Abraham. To complicate things further, Benny is suffering from a brain injury that allows him to still write, but not be able to read! But with the help of Anna and the use of a small notepad dubbed the 'memory book', Benny engages in some dedicated bedside sleuthing. Author Howard Engel (who in real life suffers a similar brain injury to that of his lead character) has created a terrific 'who dunnit' style mystery with a medical theme that will engage the reader's total and rapt attention from beginning to end. Expertly abridged and originally broadcast on CBC Radio, "Memory Books" is especially recommended to mystery buffs and, with a total running time of 3 hours and 30 minutes, is a welcome addition to any community library audiobook CD collection..
Interesting premise.......2006-03-11
Oliver Sachs was right. This mystery was approached from a whole new point of view. A detective with a memory problem from a head injury tries to solve the mystery of who and why he was nearly killed. The hospital is the main setting and we see the patient struggle to put things together with an impaired memory. I truly admired the fact that the author wrote this book with an impairment of his own.
Praise Be!! More Cooperman!!.......2005-08-09
When I heard about Howard Engel's stroke, I assumed that I would never see Benny Cooperman again. However, this author has done the seemingly impossible and given us another great story.
Memory Book is different from the other Cooperman novels because Benny has been afflicted with alexia, like Engel. Thus, quite a bit of time is spent with Benny in the hospital, learning how to cope with his altered abilities. However, Benny is just as nosy, persistent and peculiarly charming as ever. He enlists his visitors onto his sleuthing team. The mystery unravels alongside Benny's therapy.
We get to see some old, favourite characters and - of course - some new ones. Engel is a master at painting characters with details that leave you feeling you've met them somewhere before. Former Cooperman fan or not, I recommend you spend some time with Benny and his friends as they help to unravel the mystery and have some laughs along the way.
A MUST READ FOR COOPERMAN FANS.......2005-06-19
if you like Howard Engel and Benny, this is a must read!
I had no idea what had happened medically to Howard - so don't read the afterword by Oliver Sacks til AFTER. Let's just say that the fact that Howard even managed to write this book is truly remarkable and shows that he is indeed a master of the genre. The fact that it is a great book where I was totally hooked after 10 pages and the manner in which the plot unfolds - just read it - it's a remarkable achievement and I thank Howard for his courage.
Just watch out for those nap times...

Since its launch in 1999, Darby Conley's Get Fuzzy has become one of the most popular comic strips in newspaper syndication, online, and in books.Get Fuzzy books have sold over half a million copies and topped best-seller lists - and now the lovable characters land on this delightful soft-cover journal.
Customer Reviews:
Get Fuzzy lifts the heart.......2006-04-09
I love the journal because when I look at the illustration on the cover it reminds me of how quirky, funny, and irrascible my own "fur family" of one dog and three cats are. The blank pages give me plenty of space to write the adventures they have had. It is "purfect" for the pet owner. I am grateful that the Get Fuzzy comics are there, for they lift my spirits.
Perfect!.......2004-07-02
I am the envy of all my friends. They wish they had such a cool notebook!
A few things . . ........2004-06-19
This is in response to salerwee's review.
1.) Nowhere in the description did it say anything about being a 'comic collection'.
2.) The word "journal" is pretty much interchangeable with the word "diary".
3.) It's very unfair to give the actual book one star just because it wasn't what YOU were expecting. That's like giving a book on golfing one star because you THOUGHT it was about ping pong.
If it's not what you expected, contact Amazon and ask about a return. Do not give the book a low rating because you made a mistake.
Rate the book on what it IS, not on what it's NOT.
Rip Off.......2004-05-29
128 pages of blank lines !! Why don't they tell us up front that this is a NOTEBOOK? Thr usage of the word JOURNAL is not significant enough. I wish I had my $ 9.95 back.

One of my favorites!!!.......2003-10-20
This was one of the first Christian romance novels I read and it got me hooked! I am a huge fan of Carole Gift Page now and this is by far her best book. The plot was a little predictable, but the characters were so genuine. You felt as though you knew them by the third chapter. Overall, I highly recommend this book to everyone!!!!

ALG are sooo funny.......2007-04-01
i think this book is so funny and cute. it is a hardcover book with cartoons in them. i really like it. it is funny. not a children's book so if you want to buy it for your kid find them something else. it is cute for a teenager or adult.
Great Gift for my Angry Little Teenager :-}.......2007-03-17
I purchased these postcards as a gift for my 16 year old and she absolutely loved them. The 'Angry Little Girls' books help to bring a lighter side to the very roller coaster life of a teenage girl. Even though they are silly and fun, they really created a common iterest between me and my daughter. Also, she loves sharing the postcards and the books with her girlfriends. Both make great gifts. :-}
expected more cynicism .......2006-03-11
Being a fan of Angry Little Girls, I thought this would be an amazing calendar with lots of sarcastic remarks. While there were a few months that did use such headings, for the most part it was verging on corny. Example: March states "Anything is possible!"
hysterical!.......2005-08-18
She has a fun website: http://www.angrylittlegirls.com and you can sign up for a free e-mail address, like [...]. So funny! I love this book b/c it really addresses the random anti-asian feeling in the "where are you from? no really, where are you from?" comments I always receive. Also, the mom is just like mine. spot on crazy asian mom. hooray!
wonderful!!!.......2005-08-15
I really love Angry Little Girls. I think it says what I have been feeling but never brave enough to say. The thing about anger is that it is at times explosive, pensive, seething, or it's just ridiculous to be angry. I get this book and the way it delivers the irony about anger. People who have left reviews of the book that expected the book to be edgier, or more angrier, or wanted less cursing, or thought there was too much cursing just don't get it. ( I also suspect the ones who don't viscerally understand this book are men, who don't get why women are angry in the first place!) Anger comes in many forms. (the quiz) The comics in this book reflect the many changing forms anger might take and pokes fun at being angry as well. I say "YAY" for this book and that someone finally said what I feel in a fun and colorful way. Reading this book makes me feel good. I love it!

Will bring even the manliest man to tears............2003-07-31
I read this story in one sitting and I can honestly say that it is, by far, one of the most poignant books I've ever read. The descriptions found on these pages are the makings of heaven. You will find just where Smith's inspiration comes from on these pages and you will begin to understand why she became such a warrior for the early civil rights movement as she also demonstrates her deep devotion to family values and the family unit.
Most of all, the section about the chain gang still captivates me - and althought I'm not a betting man, I'd bet the farm that it will have the same affect on you.
Please buy this book - or borrow it!
A Christmas Tradition.......2002-11-25
I received this book at the age of eight. Every November since then my brother insisted I read the entire book aloud to him. A true Christmas tradition at our home.
Somehow I misplaced the original over the years and I'm thrilled to be able to order another copy at this time.
All children, young and old can learn/relearn about a true country Christmas.
Written about a much simpler, less commercial Holiday season; where love of family IS what Christmas is about, this book is a must-have for the family library.
A Christmas tradition at our house.......1999-12-01
Lilian Smith's recollection of Christmas as a child at the turn of the century transports one to a kinder and gentler time--one where the anticipation of hog killing is at once a wondrous and dreaded occasion! My family and I roll with laughter at the exploits of a large family in the south. Our mouths water at the descriptions of traditional southern delights. Truly a book of rare insight and warmth. A must read every Christmas season.

Book Description
The first volume of this three-part series tells the story of Eva Stern, a 98 year old psychoanalyst, who receives strange anonymous e-mail. It features a series of altered photographs that seem to have no apparent link except for the fact that they depict tragic events of the 20th century and the almost obsessive representation of flying beings. As the months pass, the messages begin to have more and more to do with Eva's own past, a past that symbolizes the complex aspirations of a humanity ever more in search of itself. A spellbinding journey through the 20th century by one of the best-selling authors in Europe.
