single girls guide to marry a man, his kids and his ex wife.......2007-10-01
This book gave situations that come up that can happen but not suggestions on how to deal with them. this book didnt do me much good.
Down to earth advice - too bad she copped out at end.......2007-09-06
I wasn't quite sure how to rate this book -- I enjoyed MOST of the book, but, boy, she slung a real doozy at the end, which left me with a bad taste in my mouth. First, the good stuff -- she relates with honesty, frankness, and much-needed humor, the struggles faced by stepmothers, using many examples and stories from her own life. I felt relieved, energized and heartened. I found myself taking myself less seriously and began seeing the big picture, and even laughing at some of my struggles (particularly with the ex-wife). She has a young, hip tone, which was refreshing after some of the "psych-speak" books I had previously read (although at times it seems she's trying a little too hard). BUT -- and this was a big "but" for me -- at the end she basically says the only way to be truly accepted is to have your own child with your new partner. Ugh. I felt like I had been sucker-punched. As a "childless" stepmom, I felt completely diminished, devalued and disrespected. I wanted to yell, "Sally -- not everyone chooses to or WANTS to have a child! Have a little respect!" I have to say that this last chapter and this declaration cheapened the book for me. It made her sound naive and judgmental, not to mention insensitive. I wondered how someone who seemed so "with it" for most of the book could be so "out of it" on this point. I'm just so tired of the "have children, it will solve everything and give you a purpose in life" thing. Too bad she resorted to this tired old answer, especially in this age of inclusion, and recognition of ALL types of families. And too bad her publisher didn't think twice about including it. I am rating the book 3 stars, hoping that she is just young and naive, and wouldn't have written that if she were 40.
Good for the girlfriend that is considering becoming a stepmother.......2007-09-04
I am a single gal who was looking for someone to tell me the issues that I might be inheriting if I take the next step with my boyfriend. This is an informative book of issues to be aware of and reads almost like a novel. I had picked up another stepmother book but it was way to dry and had too much homework that I was not prepared to concur just yet. This was an easy read.
This book was written for people that know they are going to marry a man, his kids and ex-wife or already have - not for people contemplating. It did lack such issues as - things to consider when moving in with each other, how to introduce kids into the relationship, etc. If you are still on the fence, you might consider another book that deals with dating issues and the step between dating and marrying.
Straight talk for new Stepmoms!.......2007-09-03
I am a new stepmom to a six year old girl. She's great, but sometimes, things bother me and I have a hard time putting them into words. This book is like reading my mind. It has helped me so much, and it also makes you realize that feelings you have sometimes are natural and ok...nothing to feel guilty about. All new stepmoms should read this book...even if your husband wasn't married before - if he just had children from a previous relationship, as mine did, a lot of the book will still apply to you as well.
Great book! Suprisingly Entertaining.......2007-08-02
This book really helped me to realize that I'm not the only person that does really stupid step-mom things and then regrets them. It's a great read if you're feeling like no one in the world can possibly understand what you're going through.
Book Description
A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant.
An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, The Time Traveler's Wife is destined to captivate readers for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite book of the decade.......2007-10-11
This book was amazing. After reading it, I have bought copies for at least 2 other friends and recommended it to many others. I loved the book and really related to the characters. I highly recommend it! While it did take a chapter or two to understand how the time traveler concept worked, the story is heartfelt and I really became emotionally connected with the characters.
Very clever story.......2007-10-09
I got this book as an audio book for my ipod, and listened to it during my my daily commute to and from work. I honestly thought it was great. It was the kind of story you can get lost in. The subject matter is interesting, and despite what a lot of the people here who didn't like the book think, I found the character development to be very engaging. I disagree completely with people who didn't like the end of the book. I felt that it was completely appropriate. Some people just want an expected, "happy" ending I suppose. If they're going to judge this book based on one aspect, that is their right...but I recommend it completely.
Creative and entertaining - not much more.......2007-10-08
Story is about a man who mostly involuntarily travels through time. He has numerous interesting encounters. He meets his wife when she was a child. Time travel is never logical if you think hard about it, but this author does a fantastic job making it as believable a possible. Despite all the time travel back and forth the story is not confusing at all and easy to follow. It is very creative and I genuinely had fun reading it.
On the downside, the character development is poor. You don't really care about the main characters. The love story is unconvincing and not particularly romantic. Go ahead and read it specially if you like science fiction but don't expect to be moved.
huh......?.......2007-10-08
I have no idea why folks are gushing over this book! Why all the hype over this drivel?
I personally adore reading anything that has a time travel story line in it, but this story was total garbage. I will admit that the first couple chapters had me intrigued but it never......well...that's just it. It never amounted to anything. The backbone of the story could have been fantastic. This book was anything BUT. Such a disappointment.
An intellectually stimulating unique story of enduring love.......2007-10-06
5 out of 5. I read this book over 18 months ago, so I need to refresh my memory. But, if you can get over the time traveler's visits to his current self, and perhaps the older man spending time with a young girl, then you will find it a rare book that leaves you wanting a love like that. Imagine meeting your true love -- and being able to share in that love before that shared love existed. A story that will evoke laughter as well as tears.

In her enchanting debut novel Single Wife, Nina Solomon presents a witty, heartfelt, and utterly engaging book with the rare Manhattan heroine who a) isn't single, and b) doesn't work in publishing. In fact, Solomon's Grace Brookman doesn't even count calories, even when the salesperson at Barney's suggests she may want to go up a size in the new Katayone Adeli suede skirt. These reasons, plus the page-turning pace and a delightful cast of supporting characters, make Single Wife's somewhat unbelievable premise and sometimes contrived coincidences mere afterthoughts to an otherwise captivating read.
The book opens with the disappearance of Laz, Grace's dynamic yet somewhat disturbed husband. Laz has disappeared before, only to return after a few days with renewed love and affection for his faithful wife. So when days turn into weeks and months, Grace lets everyone believe that Laz is still around, simply away on business or recovering from a rough night on the town. Soon, the lie takes on a life of itself, and Grace finds herself slipping farther and farther away from the once-perfect life she thought she led. Adding color to the drama are Grace's parents and their friends the Sugarmans, whose Scrabble-potluck dinners provide a constant supply of amusement in the form of Seinfeldesque New York neurosis (the first time Laz disappeared Grace's apartment was overtaken by noodle kugels and whitefish salad).
Single Wife does not always make sense; sometimes it feels as if too much is going on at once and it gets hard to keep track of all the details. At times you may want to shout at Grace to get a clue. But it will still keep you awake until 2 A.M., promising to put the book down as soon as you finish one more delightful chapter. --Gisele Toueg
Book Description
"Like a particularly sharp episode of Sex and the City, the novel poses a provocative question-does a woman need a man to feel 'married'?-and goes about answering it with both flair and heart." (Elle)
Grace Brookman thought she had it all-until her husband went out one day and never came back. Suddenly Grace is left responsible for everything, including covering up for her AWOL husband. Leaving traces of him everywhere, she discovers that a marriage can be reduced to a few timely excuses and well-placed props, some spilled crumbs here, some dirty laundry there. But then Laz's sordid past shows up on her doorstep, along with a few other surprises, turning her New York life into mess. As a single wife, Grace finally realizes it's time to take matters into her own hands...
Customer Reviews:
A marital allegory.......2007-04-30
Is it possible to be so lonely in a marriage that you feel LESS lonely when your partner is gone? And is it possible to hide the most basic facts of your existence from your friends and family?
The answer to these questions, according to Nina Solomon's "The Single Wife," is a resounding affirmative. Grace Brookman, Solomon's main character, has become somewhat accustomed to her husband's unusual comings and goings, so she automatically attempts to cover for him when he disappears in the wake of a scandal that is poised to destroy his career.
Grace puts up a good front, fooling almost everyone, and along the way discovers how lonely she's been -- and who her true friends are. Compelling characters and a unique premise make this "not your ordinary chicklit." Highly recommended.
An interesting take on friendship, marriage, and loneliness. If you enjoyed "The Time Traveler's Wife," you'll like "The Single Wife."
Awesome!.......2006-03-22
Excellent! I started it and didn't put it down until I was finished....
Very amateur writing and a promising premise that falls flat.......2006-01-26
The premise of a husband that goes missing and a wife that tries to cover it up is an interesting one...for the first 50 pages or so. Then it becomes incredibly monotonous. There were so many holes in this book that I don't even know where to begin. Grace never follows up on any clues that are handed to her about her vanished husband, instead just thinking that she must be imagining everything. A jacket appears out of nowhere? Oh, I must just have imagined it. Coffee mugs start materializing. Hmmm...must be that darned imagination again! Strange ticket stubs and lipstick in one of his pockets. Stupid imagination!!
Grace is one of the most passive and dull characters I have ever read about. What irked me most about this book wasn't how horrible it was, but how it kept me reading...mired in its horribleness...with the promise of an interesting ending that would tie all the loose ends together. There was no such thing.
Solomon is clearly a novice writer and I could almost see the editor's pen on her manuscript, telling her to add a bit of mystery here and there to keep people reading, even though it would have no bearing on the story itself. If you are midway through the book and decide you don't like it, don't bother plodding through because you will only feel cheated.
Interesting idea, bad book.......2005-10-16
Her husband has disappears and, instead of doing something about it, the protagonist decides to arrange his possessions on a daily basis as if he were still there, not to ease her grief, but to make sure the maid doesn't know he's gone. Mmmmmmmmkay. She's a rich, cold, bored housewife...no, not very likeable and certainly not a sympathetic character. Add to this the brief, inconsequential details of a conspiracy surrounding the husband's absence which, unfortunately, were not enough to keep me interested.
Single Review.......2005-10-07
Single wife was a fairly good book. It had a nice story and it kept me interested most of the time. It was about a woman named Grace, whose husband leaves her and because of previous experiences, she won't accept it. Grace covers up her husband's absence by leaving traces of him around her house and making up appropriate excuses for when he misses events. She is able to fool her ever-present parents and close friends, and her and her husband's best friend and her house keeper. As the period of time that Laz (her husband) is gone increase, Grace becomes more and more away of how one lie leads to many others. She begins to feel the burden of lying to everyone she knows, and when Laz's past returns instead of him Grace knows she is in over her head.
I enjoyed this book. The author has a very distinctive writing style and I like it, although it can be boring at times. I recommended this book to several family members and they all enjoyed it. I thought the ending could have been prolonged, and set with more depth. Over all the entire 317 page book was interesting through the end with a nice plot and good insight.

Book Description
In her first full-length collection of poems, The Wife of the Left Hand, the poet Nancy Kuhl explores the lyric possibilities found within the sometimes narrow space of the domestic interior, caught between the quotidian and the uncanny. In language that is by turns sensual and spare, elegant and oneiric, the images and music of this collection reveal and recast the daily ambiguities of living with others, "the fragile arrangement all blue / at the seams," and the uncertain line between the hidden and the apparent, like a "house / with its unswerving spine exposed." Nancy Kuhl's chapbook, In the Arbor, was winner of the Wick Poetry Chapbook Prize and was published by Kent State University Press. She is co-editor of Phylum Press, an independent publisher of innovative poetry.
Book Description
THE OGRE'S WIFE is a collection of short stories by Richard Parks. The introduction was written by Parke Godwin, who has followed the author's career from first bloom in 1978 until today. All but one of the stories have been previously published in either magazines (mostly Realms of Fantasy) or anthologies. That one, Doing Time in the Wild Hunt, was written especially for this collection.
Customer Reviews:
Literate Fantasy.......2006-01-05
Richard Parks is one of the best current fantasists at work today. But there's more to his stories than sense of wonder and mind-blowing extrapolation. His work is often of the highest literary quality one can -- and should -- expect from a writer of his caliber and standing within the fantasy field. Parks never bothers with re-hashed themes and concepts in his literature. He takes you by the hand, yes, as the story unfolds, but one is always aware of the slight grin of madness on his lips as he gives the story a delicious twist or imbues it with his own inestimable wry humor. A good, broad collection of his work. Fantasy lovers should jump on this book.
--Kenneth Mark Hoover
A read-aloud collection.......2003-03-01
If you thrilled to The Brothers Grimm when you were twelve this collection is for you. This short story collection is exceptional and I am sure you will enjoy it. The stories range from fairy tales - not for children - to science fiction to supernatural and all retain a nice distictive style that should leave you with a "Oh Yeah" feeling.
Judgement Day is God's monolog and you just have to read it to see where the author takes you. Doing Time In the Wild Hunt says a lot about husbands and wives in a small space and might make you think about picking up some flowers on the way home. Then sit down and read aloud to her, or him, The Orges Wife; the best read-aloud story I have read in a long time. Doppels touches on the same husband/wife theme but in a science fiction setting. All the other stories are great. A fine collection. If you are a short story fan pick it up, you''ll be pleased.
Unique and beautiful.......2002-11-26
This is a fantastic book, in every sense of that word. I've seen Parks' stories in a lot of magazines, and while I always remembered the story, I didn't always realize that the guy who wrote it was the same guy who wrote that =other= story I liked--and that other one, and that other one... "Oh, wow, that was him too?" Finally, here's a collection of his works all in one place, side by side. This is like buffet night at your favorite restaurant. Yum!
Anyone who's enjoyed the Datlow/Windling fairytale-retellings series should pick up this book. But there's a lot more going on here than just the Grimms reimagined. Fairy tales can take many forms. There are ghost stories here and science fiction stories and stories that defy genrification. Parks draws from a variety of world cultures and mythologies ... all the diverse manifestations of the collective unconscious. Looking back over the collection after I read it, I was surprised that the individual stories weren't longer--each one packs a lot of punch into an economical space. They're completely readable--and rereadable. And the sense of wonder ... I don't know how Parks manages to be so profound and down-to-earth at the same time. It's quite a gift.
For some reason I'm reminded of Andy Duncan and Michael Bishop. Maybe that's not so strange; all three of them are writers with unique sensibilities and styles, difficult to categorize, wide-ranging in subject matter, and generally brilliant. Or maybe it's a geographical association in my mind. Still, it might be useful information, so I recommend Parks to any other Bishop and Duncan fans out there, too.
Bravo.......2002-10-21
I finished this easily one afternoon and evening, taking time out between each story to do small chores and odd jobs. The stories are so readable that one is tempted to gobble them like popcorn, and they're too good to be treated that way. You have to let each one sink in before going on to the next. Also, they're all so different in style and content that it's best to come to each one after a short intermission, ready for a different experience. A really fine collection. I'd like to read more by him.
Customer Reviews:
An advise from Italy: read Landolfi!.......2002-03-19
A strange, intelligent author today little known even here in Italy, Tommaso Landolfi wrote several wonderfully weird and surrealistic stories, oscillating among irony, nightmare and fear. Believe me: a great writer, and not a "great italian" writer, but a great one, period. If you love Calvino and Cortazar and, in general, the fantastic literature, you'll miss something if you don't know Landolfi.
Wonderfully Funny!.......2000-05-06
Landolfi has been called "the Italian Kafka" (according to the blurb on the back of the book), no doubt because of the surrealistic elements in his short stories. For example, Landolfi imagines Gogol's wife as an inflatible creature to be manipulated according to Gogol's will. In "Dialogue of the Greater Harmonies," a man learns a nonexistent language and feels cheated that the poems he has written in it can never really be shared. Through his stories, Landolfi shares deeper concerns about the importance of relationships and language and communication. It is unfortunate that his work is not better known.

Book Description
from Enormously Sad
. . . Sad, so sad-compared to what?
To your earlier more oblivious state?
It never was oblivious enough-
always those presentiments of sadness
prickling the limbic. Now a voice says, Get outside
yourself, go walk on the flats. The tide's gone out—
but your little metal detector will detect little metallic coins
of enormous sadness in the teeming wet sand,
and then, the tide will come back, erasing, cleansing!
And you, standing there in the salty scouring air-
will you still be enormously sad,
While the other world, outside your tiny purview, struck
by iron, reels? World of intentional iron, pure savage
organized iron of the world, it hasn't the time
that you have for your puny enormous sadness.
Widely acclaimed for expanding the stylistic boundaries of both the narrative and meditative lyric, Gail Mazur’s poetry crackles with verbal invention as she confronts the inevitable upheavals of a lived life. Zeppo’s First Wife, which includes excerpts from Mazur’s four previous books, as well as twenty-two new poems, is epitomized by the worldly longing of the title poem, with its searching poignancy and comic bravura. Mazur’s explorations of “this fallen world, this loony world” are deeply moving acts of empathy by a singular moral sensibility—evident from the earliest poem included here, the much-anthologized “Baseball,” a stunning bird’s-eye view of human foibles and passions. Clear-eyed, full of paradoxical griefs and appetites, her poems brave the most urgent subjects—from the fraught luscious Eden of the ballpark, to the fragility of our closest human ties, to the implications for America in a world where power and war are cataclysmic for the strong as well as the weak.
Customer Reviews:
A RICH AND GENEROUS GIFT.......2006-11-02
Zeppo's First Wife--eloquent, warm, urgent, funny--is a generous gift, offering several books in one: the complete text of the National Book Award finalist You Can't Take That Away from Me (2001), the complete text of The Common (1995), and a selection of both new and earlier poems that make this an especially rich "new and selected." The work arranges the books in reverse chronological order, ending with only one poem--the much-anthologized "Baseball"--from Mazur's first collection. The result is hauntingly like watching a film of the poet's life and mind rewind, as figures grieved in the more recent poems appear in earlier ones, and as the profoundly mature poet reveals the earlier excursions of her careful observations and probing mind. With unfailingly sure music and complex yet clear syntax, Mazur takes on the most deeply disturbing emotions ("I'm afraid of grief, and I mean to enter it fully"), questioning, exploring, refusing the solace of art or easy answers as she chronicles a quickly disappearing present and follows memory into a vividly detailed past. If reading Gail Mazur's poetry doesn't change your life, it may change the way you look at the world and think about your experiences.

Morgan's Wife and Morgan's Son.......2004-02-25
This was once again a spellbinding reissue of the original series' books. I find Lindsay McKenna generally does a fantastic job with characters and scenes. I will admit this may not be for everyone as if you are not a series reader, it may be too complicated to follow through, but in the end, with the last series drawing it together, it is well worth the reading, even if its not 'lighthearted'. In this day and age, its a good romantic book with strong characters
Skipped through most of it..........2004-02-19
I had a hard time finishing this book. There are two stories in it, both reissues from about 1995. Morgan Treyhern, his wife and son are kidnapped. The first story has to do with rescuing the wife, the second has to do with rescuing the son. However, it was hard to concentrate on the romance forming between the two characters in each book when all you can think about is the family getting rescued. Plus, horrible things are done to the wife in particular, and even by the end of the second book, the husband isn't rescued. It was just too depressing. I bought the book because there are future books coming out in the series and I thought it would give me good books to purchase in the future. Boy, was I wrong. I don't even care how the story ends because you know there will be more pain to deal with when the husband is rescued, how the trauma will affect the son that was kidnapped, etc. If I want to be depressed, I'll watch the news. This wasn't for me. Plus there are aspects to the story that just don't make sense (like the reason for not taking the baby daughter). I skipped through the first book, read the first couple of pages in the second, then read the last few pages. I'm sorry I wasted my money.

Book Description
The Salinger Sisters series spins the tales of four sisters who find love - in spite of them-selves. Now in Book Three, after years of trying to be "the perfect wife," Felicia is struggling, for her children's sake, to rebuild her life following a divorce. Now Felicia decides she needs a "wife" to help her juggle the demands of childcare, housework, and her fledgling career. Sensitive Brody Collins, an old classmate and "child care provider," fits the bill perfectly. But is Brody really who he seems to be? And what actually prompted him to take on the job of caring for her kids?
Author Shari MacDonald writes: "Nearly every woman I know struggles to balance dozens of competing demands on her time: kids and the carpool, finances and friendships, responsibilities and romance. Many of these women daydream of someday getting a little 'extra help.' In The Perfect Wife, single mom Felicia Salinger Kelley is about to get exactly that, and so much more..."

God knows where to find your true love..........2006-11-17
I have read this entire series and I have to say that Book 1 - Love on the run was the best. This whole series was very good, I read all 3 books in about 4 days.
I loved the sisters, they were so different and interesting in their own ways. I loved their leading men, Jonas was my favorite. He was so persistent. If you have not read the series please do.
These books have a very strong sense of God in them but they were romance as well and I love that. When an author can combine the two and make it real.
I give it 5 stars - the whole series - it was very moving and special.
Interesting Story.......2000-04-05
I only gave this one four stars because it wasn't quite as good as the two books preceding it, but I still thought it was excellent. It was an easy and relaxing read that made me smile and laugh at the end of a long day. The book continues the story of the Salinger sisters, and keeps the reader updated on the other members of the family, while focusing on the life of Fee. The story take s a little different spin than I thought it would take when reading reviews, but it was interesting, and kept me reading to find out what was going to happen. I enjoyed it a lot.
