Book Description

Before she was a Mammy, before she had Chisellers, and before they made her a Granny, Agnes Browne was Agnes Reddin, a young girl-or a Young Wan- growing up in the Jarro in Dublin.

Brendan O'Carroll takes readers back to the heart of working-class Dublin, this time in the 1940s. Together with her soon to be lifelong best friend Marion Delany, young Agnes manages to survive the indignities and demands of Catholic school, the unwanted births of siblings, days spent in the factories and markets, and nights in the dance hall as rock-and-roll invades Dublin.

But on the eve of her wedding night, the Jarro is alive with gossip-will Agnes be turned away at the altar? For the whole parish knows Agnes's not-so-well-kept secret. And with a mother falling further into dementia, and a younger sister turning to a life of crime, it's up to Agnes alone to keep her splintering family together, while trying to create one of her own.

Filled with O'Carroll's trademark wicked wit and loving, larger-than-life characters, The Young Wan shows the hardscrabble beginnings of the ultimate Irish mother and family.

5 out of 5 stars The Young Wan.......2006-11-10

I just think "He Nails it all", l've done this series and just so enjoyed them all.

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD SOLID FUN READ - FROM HILARIOUS TO BITTER/SWEET.......2006-08-04

Not having read the Agnes Browne trilogy, this was my first exposure to the author. I, infact, did not realize that it was a prequel to other books, having picked this one up purely by accident. What a lucky find for me? I cannot remember when I have enjoyed a work as much. The author is a natural story teller, quite a fine writer and has the ability to make his characters jump off the page. While parts of this book were indeed sad and somewhat bitter/sweet, others were absolutely hilarious. I do feel the author's greatest strenth is character developement. You can actually see and feel the characters in your mind's eye. The book, set in Dublin during the 1940s, captures street life quite wonderfully. The market place, where much of the story takes place truely comes alive. For a pleasureable read I do highly recommend this one.

3 out of 5 stars Poor Writing, Interesting Characters.......2006-03-29

Contrary to what others think, I found the writing to be decidedly amateurish. I spent years reading and correcting pulp-like fiction written by high school students; this book takes me back to those stacks of stories. The vocabulary is repetitive; some sentences are run-on; the tense is weak ("...the siren was screaming...," "...the man was spitting at...," "Bosco was running hard..."); the grammar is sometimes unusual ("...went to follow...," "...he..made after the other men..."); and occasional slang seems inappropriate ("...a wino..."). There is a too-obvious effort to try to imitate speech patterns. And there are certainly trite and overused descriptions of people: the Irish as the sterotype.

4 out of 5 stars The Young Wan .......2005-11-21

Brendan O'Carroll's The Young Wan shows the beginnings of the matricarch of the Browne Family. Agnes marriage to the Redster is explained in all of its colorful history in this installment. This prequel offers the same deadpan humor that helps the Irish navigate through their poverty as the Trilogy. This light hearted if not at times tragic novel will have reader laughing, crying and marveling at the strength of friendship and family.

5 out of 5 stars Humorous, touching real-life story.......2005-02-12

I came upon this book by accident and I enjoyed it so much I am buying the other 3. This precedes the trilogy and I was lucky enough to read this first to get the story as it goes along.
It was full of humour and down to earth stories of what it really was like in Ireland "back in them days".
I lent this book to a friend who was very wary in case it was depressing. She said it was the best book she has read in a long while. She wants to borrow the other books as I buy them!
Would recommend this book to anyone looking for an enjoyable read. Different from the usual Irish stories, this one is unputdownable!!

These books are awesome!! each one contains backstories about kof and street fighter characters. barely any martial arts (its all pretty much just straight special moves in every fight--kind of lame), but its cool to see what would happen if geese fought ryu and so on.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-07-20

If you are looking for a general, introdutory to intermediate-level Internet book, this is THE ONE. It will give you a good grasp of Internet concepts. You'll find it quite up-to-date (including Windows XP topics), accurate and concise. Specially interesting is the fact that it provides you with clear explanations throughout the pages, including lots of helpful examples and procedures, giving the "how-to" for many, many tasks within the Windows family of operating systems and the major software packages available for Internet.
Internet connections, Web bowsing, e-mail, chatting, newsgroups, security issues and so on, are all well covered with lots of real-world tips.
Notes:
1.Being for the beginning- to intermediate-level reader this book does not cover advanced Internet issues such servers, firewalls, network OSes, and so on; 2.The book comes with no CD-ROM (what in part, explains its reduced price)

In short, if you read my observations and found this to be the kind of book you are looking for, I assure you: You will not be disappointed.

One more thing: I'm using the book to prepare for CompTIA's i-Net+ certification and I can tell you that I find it to be one of the best references books out there for that target.

Thanks Margaret (et al) for writing such an excepcional book.

I am 70 years old, have used the `Dummie' and `Idiot' books, plus several more. Not having ANY experience with computers, up until 2 years ago, I go where I please and do what I want, thanks to the good books on the markey. This book, was the most expensive; but by far, the most helpful! (My wife thinks so too.)

Book Description

Tian and Drei von Richenstein, two unlikely heroes, embark on an adventure filled with excitement...intrigue...and a bit of comic relief! They have quite the talent for making allies into new enemies. Their (mis)adventure pits them against ferocious ogres, vengeful red dragons, an army of soldiers, and even an age-old rival. But leave it to Tian and Drei to make sure that this adventure isn't their final fantasy...In this laugh-out-loud parody of all things RPG (and we don't mean "Really Powerful Guys"), no gaming franchise is safe in this comedy that's never dull--unlike our heroes' swords.

5 out of 5 stars WIZARD WITHOUT SPELLS/WARRIOR WITHOUT BRAINS.......2006-06-07

In the realm of Entalasia in the Republic of Koreanika two travellers roam the land looking for food and a place to sleep without getting themselves killed! Tian is a magic user who had to drop out of school because he couldn't afford the tuition! Because of his abrupt departure, he only knows a sole level one spell...."Fireball". Your opponents aren't really gonna cringe in fear if that's the best you can do. So Tian is always looking for some magic items to make him stronger, which usually gets the duo in trouble. His friend, Drei, is a fierce warrior who just happens to be a complete idiot with a 50 IQ. The only thing he worries about is feeding his bottomless stomach. He also carries an enchanted talking sword that gets on his nerves. These two guys are not really heroes in the real sense of the word, because they leave death and destruction in their wake wherever they go, whether they intended it or not. For example, in the prologue of volume 1, they cut up a senile dragon to sell the body parts for cash and then find out that the dragon was the father of the girl who saved them from some nasty monsters. Instead of fighting her in her dragon form they take off, leaving her to raze their home village, killing everybody....Theirs is a vicious cycle of heroism which forces them sometimes to beat the crap out of the very people they should be saving!

Last Fantasy is the funniest manga/manhwa this side of Cromartie High that I've read this year. You'll be laughing out loud as you read it because it plays with all the roleplaying game/novel conventions. The art is great because it is done so well and so meticulously like this is some epic story but in reality it's about two loser cowards trying to get by in a world they are ill-equipped to deal with, one because he lacks a brain, the other because he lacks power. You can pretty much see most of the jokes coming, but it doesn't detract from the laughs. You should pick this up if you want to have a bellyache full of humor!

4 out of 5 stars Merciless, Hilarious Parody.......2006-05-09

Every tradition RPG gamers take for granted is ruthlessly mocked, from buying magical items to scrounging for gold. The two protaganists, Tian and Drei, blithley suffer through RPG cliches gone wrong. If you are a fan of RPGs, and looking for laughs, pick this up. No RPG is safe from being made fun of!

Book Description

Tian and Drei's adventures lead them to experience, firsthand, the tragedies of war! (Well, okay, they're actually scavenging for prized possessions and valuable weaponry, looking to turn a profit.) But bad goes to worse when new enemies appear to challenge our mostly stalwart heroes--who run away to fight another day!

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars SAVING PRINCE KREMHILT.......2006-08-14

Tian and Drei find themselves in the middle of a war between the kingdoms of Ameria and Sobeetrook. Well, they're not really in the middle of it, it's more like the two are taking advantage of the chaos to make off with any money or equipment they can steal off the still warm corpses of dead soldiers. Much to their surprise, after one terrible battle, they find a warrior crawling out of the battlefield. Their first thought is to abandon him, but when they find out his name is "Prince" Kremhilt, Tian and Drei are sucking up to the guy big-time thinking if they escort the Prince home, their reward will be a ton of treasure! Unfortunately for them, the Prince is being hunted down by hostile forces that won't hesitate to kill our lovable losers along with the Prince!

Right off, Last Fantasy Volume 2 is not that funny, which makes it pale beside the hilarious first volume. The problem was that except for a few jokes, most of volume 2 was taken up with a more serious storyline that focused more on fighting and conventional plot instead of the more episodic gag comedy that made the previous installment work so well. Towards the end of the book, Creative Hon does get back to a more humorous direction, but by then it's too late. You can't do action drama for 150 pages and then switch back to comedy the last 10. While the story suffered, the art by Yong-Wan Kwon is masterful and beautiful, but the irony that made the first book so funny, namely, the serious art compounded with the writer's absurd humor, was missing half its component. It would be nice to see this same artist on a more serious book with a better writer. Hopefully, Volume 3 will be a better read.

Maybe it is the extensive coverage or the fact that this is practically technical but it seems to be a little out of date. Yet it is not a collection of volunteer mainatined Internet FAQ's which is good. It is an original work and was very helpful in some aspects of helping my friends connect to the net.

Even if you're not a dummy, the sixth edition of The Internet for Dummies is one of the best user's guides to the Internet now available. Many so-called Internet books are nothing more than printed collections of Web addresses, but John Levine, Carol Baroudi, and Margaret Levine Young recognize that deciding to use the Internet involves financial commitments and computer-hardware decisions as much as it does looking at neat pictures. That said, don't expect to set up your own e-commerce site with this book, and don't expect to find step-by-step instructions for starting your computer. But do expect to get some good advice about picking an ISP (Internet Service Provider), protecting your privacy (and your kids), and connecting with Windows or a Mac. The authors also do an exceptional job of explaining such terms as PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) and what it is for, and they even talk about the old Unix shell account (with a Lynx text browser) for those not getting a PPP account. You'll find tips for optimizing your browser for speed, building your first Web page, managing e-mail, subscribing to mailing lists, and, yes, shopping. What is most impressive, however, is the balanced approach the authors take in evaluating Web sites (they do give some Web addresses), online services, and browser software. They offer the pros and cons and let you sort it out. They also include their own Web address so you can look for updates to the book and check on their latest favorites. --Patrick O'Kelley

Yesterday I installed Eudora and followed the tips in the book. I've also used the book to find help for friends with e-mail and/or Internet problems. I'm new to the computer and "Internet for Dummies" has helped me in the quest to be an
        e-nerd.

An excellent read for the internet novice and the start of my dummies collection. You were right about TUCOWS, a good site if you can stand the cow puns. I received my very first e-mail message from your site's mail-bot.
        " C' web et moi "

        Thanks

4 out of 5 stars excellent audio introduction........2002-02-20

It is an almost 90 minutes clear audiotape recorded in 1995 describing all these terms dealing with the web, internet. It start with definition and description (www, homepage) a new way for communication, it open a network of networking. Brief details about history of development. Requirement for usage: computer, and greatly details the advantages and disadvantages of each provider. Also talk about the huge benefit such as looking for college, or even education online. On the other end talk about inappropriate content of internet and different methods for parental control, and touch on the "addicted to". Also give few details about etiquette: do not flame, SPAM.

Despite being 1995 information. But most of them will hold true and correct for many years, and I found them very informative despite being familiar with majority of them, but it was fun to get an idea about what internet was in 1996, and get helpful advices about different provider and security. I rated four stars only due to 1996, had I heard it then it deserves five stars easily.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.......2001-03-24

I have several dummies books, from how to build a PC to CCNA. I had to read this rediculous book when I worked for a very well known DSL provider on the East Coast. This book was trivial, assumes that you are completely mindless and plugs certain products and services shamelessly. Yes, I agree, Hot Bot is a pretty good search engine...but it is not the only one out there. This book has technical incosistansies throughout and is basically a really really long advertisement. Easily the worst dummies book in print, and Im not being a jerk, I love dummies books, Ron Gilster rocks, but this is absolute crap. You can honestly get more informed with a magazine.
