5 out of 5 stars another good Nama Beach High book.......2005-12-20

Laura Duffy is back in the fourth book in the Nama Beach High series. Gigi Palmer, the girl who was in part responsible for Laura's broken jaw in book 2, is back-and with a vengeance. Laura and her friends have taken a pledge to stop the hate, one person at a time, as outlined in book 3. In this book, that pledge gets tested. When Stevie decides to run for Student Body President, Laura's group turns upside down. Gigi is up to no good, yet again, when she announces her own campaign to run for Student Body President. Gigi's promise to the faculty-of having a good, clean campaign is nice-on the surface. Gigi's first plan of attack starts after Laura speaks up in her history class during a debate-a debate of which gets her into trouble. When the group is seen praying during lunchtime, Gigi gets the ammo she needs to set up a "separation of church and state" rally on the campus. Laura's friend Celeste gets the rally ended early when she speaks out to Gigi and Laura's group takes the fall all of a sudden. When the principal and some of the advisors set rules up against Laura's friends, Joy Beth and Trent turn on her. And Stevie no longer wants to be seen in public with Laura after Gigi runs Stevie's faith into the ground. All that's left is Celeste, who turns on Duffy after she begins to feel that God's timing is not worth it. Laura begins to feel betrayed until she meets a freshman named Eve and a hot guy named Duck. Both are not what they seem, and, after Laura uncovers a sinister plot to get Ms. Isaacsen fired, she must find a way to get Eve and Duck to speak up for the truth and prove her mentor's innocence at the same time-and all this without saying a single word, for her vocal cords are shot from talking too much. This is perhaps one of the weirdest of the books in this series, but still worth a read.

5 out of 5 stars getting rid of hate, one person at a time..........2005-04-27

"Fault Lines" book three in Nancy Rue's `Nama Beach High Series, starts up a month after the incident that left Laura with her broken jaw (book 2, False Friends and True Strangers). Laura is doing better now, but her jaw is still wired shut, and she can't sing. In fact, everything is going good at `Nama High, until K.J.'s parents announce their plans to divorce and a new group of students come to school. The new students are Jews, only everyone thinks their Middle Eastern terrorists. And it doesn't help when everyone soon finds out that they're Jews, because the students of `Nama High have no idea what to do about a group of Jews who are unfriendly and sit together in a quiet group, not talking to anyone and even telling Laura and her posse that they want nothing to do with them. When a group of Rednecks starts to pick on the Jewish students, Laura is the first person to stand up-but realizes that she's standing up for the wrong reasons. At this point Ponytail Boy intervenes yet again, informing her that she needs to get rid of the hate in herself before she can help others get rid of their hate. So Laura comes up with an idea to bridge the gap between the Jewish students and the Christians on campus, all the while trying to get rid of her own hate, and later the hate among her friends. Laura finally does befriend the Jewish students on campus-but the event causes the unthinkable to happen. It is only then that Laura learns how much she has let God change her, especially after the unthinkable happens to her and she meets up with Richard, her ex from the first book in the series. This book continues to draw upon being an example to non-Christian friends, while also bringing to light the passages in the Bible regarding hate (although indirectly), solving your own problems before going after someone elses, and, lastly, Rue talks about the common links in Judaism and Christianity, and points out how modern day Christians themselves can be unreasonably nasty and hateful to Jews. A must read in the `Nama Beach High series.

        Book Description

A series of books for mid-teens, dealing with the challenges, problems and excitement of becoming young women of faith. In this second book in the 'Nama Beach High series, Laura Duffy and the girls discover that within John 16: 21-17, 19 is a "secret" hidden text. Discipline--the ability to discoverer, to not exploit, to resist possessing--is revealed as a way that God’s power can bless us; surrendering all of life’s non-essentials, and identifying what remains as God’s sacred gifts, is the Key.

5 out of 5 stars false friends and true strangers.......2005-04-20

Laura Duffy is getting used to `Nama Beach High, but she's still got some rifts to work out with Dad. First off, she's got to get a job, and she finds one at the Gap. She's finding a best friend in Celeste. But her job isn't doing well, she has a hard time getting along with some coworkers who she eventually catches shoplifting. But when her car is stolen, Laura learns to make a stand for what is right. She pays dearly in the end, but finds that it is worth it, for doing the right thing brings her closer to God. This is book two in the `Nama Beach High series, preceded by "New Girl In Town." I thought this book was better than the first one.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book for Young Adults.......2004-09-08

Laura Duffy has settled into her new school, Panama Beach High School a.k.a. "Nama High". She just got her driver's license; she has friends to eat lunch with and a cool job at The Gap in the mall. All is right in her world, that is, until it begins to unravel when she bangs into a Darth-Vader-black Chevy Silverado pickup belonging to Vance Woodruff, the school tough guy. In the words of her best friend, Celeste, "No stinkin' way!"

Unknown to Laura, this is the beginning of the end of her life as she knows it on this planet. One night after work, she discovered her car was stolen. Also, she witnesses a shoplifting incident which puts her in an awkward situation with her boss. Her life seems to be taking on a life of its own and she feels totally out of control of it.

Laura also learns some shocking news about one of her friends. Then, she is embroiled in a violent act committed by Vance Woodruff and his cronies. Reality soon hits home. With the help of Mrs. Iaacsen, the school counselor, and the "Mystery Group," Laura learns the truth about God's blessings and His secret powers as well as how to handle her own responsibilities.

Nancy Rue beautifully captures the nuances, language, and mixed-up thoughts and emotions of a typical teenager. I highly recommend the "Nama Beach High" series for adults as well as young adults. Also available is the first book of the series, "Nama Beach High: New Girl in Town".

        Book Description

A series of books for mid-teens, dealing with the challenges, problems and excitement of becoming young women of faith. In the first book, Laura Duffy's family moves to Satellite Beach, Florida, where she initially feels out of place at a high school where her good grades mark her as a nerd. Then a school counselor, Mrs. Isaacsen (who turns out to be a Christian student’s best friend) establishes a once-a-week group for conflicted girls.

4 out of 5 stars good but for one thing.......2004-10-04

I found "New Girl in Town" to be an enjoyable book. Laura Duffy is a Christian girl from Missouri who moves to Florida in the middle of her junior year. When she gets there she discovers that she can't do any choirs because they're full and she can't get into any AP classes except one. Top that off with how no one seems to want to talk to her and how she gets to baby sit her sister every day after school, and Laura's junior year seems to be off to a bad start.

Then Laura gets to join a group of social "outcasts" where she finds her first friend, a girl named Celeste. Ahe also meets up with a school counselor who shows Laura that there is more to her problems that meets the eye and tells Laura that if she's going to survive the changes in her life, she needs to surrender her will to Christ.

My only problem with this book is Laura's relationship with Richard. He leads her to think he likes her; then when Laura reveals her true feelings to him, he tells EVERYONE but Laura why he is avoiding her. He even tells Celeste, and Celeste turns around to Laura and says something is up but won't tell her what it is. Finally, after leaving Laura to be a nervous wreck, Richard tells her what was up-that he doesn't like her the way she thinks he does, and he can't be her everything. While I find that it was great that Richard comes out and says that Laura should be looking to God, not to him, I found Richard's actions to be anything but admirable. He doesn't tell Laura right off; instead he has to tell everyone in his youth group (including the youth pastor) and Laura's friend Celeste. And he tells them all to tell Laura nothing. He avoids her like she's got plague, and only tells her when she calls HIM to ask what is up. So basically, he wasn't being a man-he had to let the girl call him to figure out what was up. Richard's character is a far cry from how the Bible says that men should treat women. Using the cloaked dagger technique only serves to turn women into nervous wrecks; and its considered gossip to tell everyone but the person you SHOULD be talking to. Richard also put Laura's friendship at risk by telling Celeste about what was up and then swearing her to secrecy like that. What Richard should have done was this: when he got that odd email from Laura, he should have arranged time in his schedule to talk to her-to tell her that she should be looking to God, not to him, and he should have then broken it off. Instead, he does the cloaked dagger thing: he tells everyone; swears the lot of them to secrecy; waits for Laura, who is devastated, to call him, tells her over the phone that he does not like her that way while demanding she read the email he sent her ("because I explained everything there") and then tells her that she should still go to the youth group that Richard is in, despite the fact that everyone in there knows that Richard dumped Laura and is pitying her. I've met real-life guys like Richard; all they do is break hearts and cause dissention in youth and singles groups. An honest Christian guy, on the other hand, leaves the women in the group better off than they were before. Richard is a poor, pathetic excuse of a Christian guy, and I hope that the readers of this book realize that. I've met REAL Christian guys; they don't make things worse like that.

5 out of 5 stars Deals with new situations and insecurities..........2004-09-08

After moving with her parents to Panama City, Florida away from Missouri where she grew up, 16-year-old Laura Duffy is not fitting in well as a Junior at Panama Beach High School lovingly called "Nama High" by the students.

Nama Beach High is written from Laura's point of view. Nancy Rue beautifully captures the nuances, language, and mixed-up thoughts and emotions of a typical teenager. She begins in chapter one with:

        --------
"I, Laura Duffy, made a decision on October 20th of my junior year. It was a decision that rocked my world.

After three days at Panama Beach High, it was obvious that I was essentially the biggest loser in Panama City, if not on the planet, and that nobody was ever going to speak to me. Period.

My decision: I couldn't spend another lunch period pretending I didn't CARE that I was being ignored. I knew kids believed being a loser was contagious; I believed it too. I wouldn't want to be friends with me either."
        -------

We immediately relate to Laura and remember our own teenage inadequacies and fears of starting a new school and wishing we'd somehow melt into the pavement and not be seen or heard " EVER! For me, 'Nama . . . reminded me of that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when facing a new situation and being totally alone in the world.

We as adults have learned how to overcome our insecurities and we've gone on to conquer them (some of us have, that is). Poor Laura with "sparkling orthodontia" and "nerd" status because of her good grades is faced with total upheaval with none of her peer-group support to help her adjust and give her the confidence she needs to go on.

Laura is soon met with a violent encounter with two tough girls which leads her to the principal's office and an unwelcomed invitation from the school counselor, Mrs. Isaacsen. She then joins a group of four fellow misfits in Mrs. Isaacsen's "Mystery Group" and they begin meeting weekly. These four girls, Mrs. Isaacsen, and Laura form an unlikely bond which helps them learn about life, love, and friendships, their faith and the truths about God. And, Laura has a "Secret Admirer" who leaves her notes and curious items in her locker. There's the hint that there is also an angel sent from God to encourage her and help her grow in her faith.

4 out of 5 stars Good teen read.......2004-06-13

Laura Duffy has everything going for her. She is a straight A student, has a prominent spot in her school chorus, and is popluar with lots of friends. Her life is turned upside down when her family moves out of state and she attends 'Nama Beach High, where she is too late to get into both advanced classes and chorus. Laura doesn't even have much chance at making new friends, as the only girls she talks to in the first few days just want to beat her up! Luckily, Laura's brush with juvenile deliquency puts her in touch with guidance counselor Mrs. I., whose group for girls who feel out of place is just what Laura needs. With the gentle urging of Mrs. I., Laura begins to slowly let God work in her life. But her little sister's close brush with death and the mysterious stranger who leaves objects on Laura's locker throw her off track again. Does God have a plan for Laura's life? Who is the Secret Admirer? Will Laura ever find a place to fit in? I enjoyed this book and think that many teenage girls will as well. I did like Book Two better, but it is important to read them in order so that you will know what is happening.

After administering the affairs as a vizier for Malek Shah for some thirty years Nizam-Al-Mulk was overthrown and impeached after he had rashly declared that his cap and ink-horn, the badges of his office, were connected by divine decree with the throne and diadem of the Sultan.
        On Deliverance of Justice:
Justice is the most important virtue, and Nizam al-Mulk recommended the king hold court on two days of the week to hear complaints personally and redress wrongs so that oppressors would curb their activities from fear of punishment. Tax collectors should take only the amount due and with civility. Officers should be investigated secretly and if impropriety is found, they should be removed from office and be replaced by the learned and pious.
        On Generosity:
A ruler should be generous in his acts. nothing is better than generosity, and kindness, and hospitality. Any peasant in need of oxen or seed should be given a loan to keep him viable. The story is told of how Sultan Mahmud, afraid that he was not handsome, was advised by Ahmad Ibn Hasan to take gold as his enemy so that men will regard him as their friend. Mahmud then became generous and charitable, and the whole world adored him.
        On Knowledge and Wisdom:
Luqman the Wise noted that knowledge is better than wealth, because you have to take care of wealth, but knowledge takes care of you. Nizam al-Mulk believed that sound judgment is better for a king than having a powerful army. Nizam al-Mulk believed it was the perfection of wisdom not to become angry at all; but if one does become angry, intelligence should prevail over wrath. The wise have said that patience is good, but it is even better during success. Knowledge is good, but it is even better with skill. Wealth is good, but it is even better with gratitude and enjoyment.
        On Armed Forces:
Nizam recommended having different races among the troops so that they would compete with each other to excel. He described Alp-Tegin's rise to power from a slave and page of the Samanids to a commander. He punished a page for taking hay and a chicken from a peasant without paying for it as he ordered. This made other soldiers afraid, and the peasants were safe. His justice led the citizens of Ghaznain to take Alp-Tegin as their king. Because the Samanids tried to destroy the worthy Alp-Tegin, they declined and were overcome by Alp-Tegin and his successor Sebuk-Tegin, who founded the Ghaznavid empire.
        On Appointment of Ministers:
He wrote that two appointments should not be given to one man nor should one position be given to more than one person. He complained that many worthy people remain unemployed when some persons are given several positions each. He lamented that it used to be that those hired followed the Hanafi or Shafi'i teachings and were from Khurasan or Transoxiana; but now Taj al-Mulk wants to economize by reducing 400,000 men on the pay-roll to 70,000 in order to fill the treasury with gold. Nizam argued that a larger empire required more employees and that even more men would enable them to govern India too.
        On Qualities of King
He believed the Sasanians fell from power because they entrusted important affairs to petty and ignorant officers and because they hated learned people. Thus instead of having wise officers, Buzurjmihr said he had to deal with incapable officers. Buzurjmihr Bakhtgan advised the king to banish the bad qualities from himself, which he listed as "hatred, envy, pride, anger, lust, greed, desire, spite, mendacity, avarice, ill temper, cruelty, selfishness, hastiness, ingratitude, and frivolity."The good qualities he should exercise are "modesty, good temper, clemency, forgiveness, humility, generosity, truthfulness, patience, gratitude, mercy, knowledge, intelligence, and justice."
Nizam cited the early caliph 'Umar's response to the last Sasanian king Yazdijurd Shahryar to show that the latter's empire was declining, because his court was crowded with complainers; his treasury was full of ill-gotten wealth; and his army was disobedient.
        Conclusion:
Nizam told stories from history to show that a sick era replaces good times when a just king does away with evil-doers, has right judgments, and a vizier and officers of virtue; every task has the proper worker; heretics are put down, and the orthodox are raised up; tyrants are repressed; soldiers as well as peasants fear the king; the uneducated and base are not given positions; the inexperienced are not promoted; advice is sought from the intelligent and mature; men are selected for their skill, not because of their money; religion is not sold for worldly things; everything is ordered according to merit; thus all people have work according to their capability; and all things are regulated by justice and government by the grace of God.

4 out of 5 stars Comparable with The Prince by Machiavelli.......2002-05-09

The book is comparable with Machiavelli`s book The Prince,
bye the exception it has short "stories" like the old testament.
The stories tells of good and bad deeds and what a ruler shall do to govern a country. It`s in a way "The art of war" by Sun Tzu concerning foreign ambassadors and representatives. It`s in a way concealing the stat of the government and to welcome them in a proper way when he crosses the border of the country.
It is very well chaperized and writen and i can see the Choran`s influenze since it was written around 1100 century.....in doing good deeds.....

But it`s a little bit expensive, i would have given 5 stars ìf the price was lower.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and instructive.......2006-11-23

This book is, quite simply, worth reading for the inspiration alone. It is very informative as to the who, what, why, and how of japa yoga, a tried and true spiritual devotion spanning, as far as I know, all major religions. The 'who' are those people who have practiced these exercises successfully, from virtually unknown mystics to the likes of Ghandhi. The what tells succinctly and clearly what exactly japa yoga is. The why is interpsersed with philosophy and inspiring accounts, and the how tells us thoroughly what we can do to successfully begin our journey beyond the apparant dependence of maya and straight to the mysterious and real "Godhead."
Surely anyone can benefit from reading this book who has any interest in absorption in the divine.
