Book Description

Jennifer McKinnon is convinced there are no more knights in shining armor-at least not in Manhattan. Little does she know that a hero of legendary chivalry waits her...800 years in the past.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Charming Time Travel Romance.......2007-09-13

Jennifer MacLeod McKinnon has returned to her Manhattan flat to discover that it's been robbed for the third time topping off a perfectly disastrous evening. Not that it had started out that way Jennifer had been asked at the last minute to fill in for the extraordinary Victor Bourgeois to play a Paganini violin concerto, a dream performance. She'd been dressed like Cinderella and had attracted the attention of the gorgeous Maestro Michael McGillicuty, but the conductor had turned out to be no prince charming. Where to find a knight in shining armor? Definitely not in the Big Apple, so when Jennifer's big sister Megan invites her to England she jumps at the opportunity.

Eight hundred years in the past medieval knight Nicholas de Piaget is weary of his grandmother's attempts to marry him off to the fine ladies of the King's court. Not a one has been interested in him for more than his wealth. For all that, few could even overlook his murky past, and not since his stepsister Amanda had married another had any woman cared for the state of his heart. He's certain his fate is to grow old and fat in his run down, leaky castle until fate brings him into the path of a lovely, feisty, red headed damsel in distress.

Jen had made a stop in Scotland to visit her (many times removed) uncle, Jamie MacLeod, a seasoned time traveler and former medieval laird. There she had listened to tales of time travel and experienced a little sword play. In spite of her maps she'd gotten lost on her way back to England and stumbled upon a derelict castle which had given her the oddest sense of deja' vous. Still reeling from that feeling, Jen is stunned to realize that she's about to be robbed once more when she takes a step backward and finds herself in an even worse pickle. She's not in Kansas anymore and it's more than likely that she's about to be accused of witchcraft.

Fortunately Jen's not a stranger to time travel and luckily the de Piaget brothers are chivalry personified. Monty seeing her suddenly appear out of the grass is convinced that Jen's a fairy like his new brother-in-law Jake (modern day hero of Much Ado in the Moonlight). Older brother Nick notes her clothing and is sure she's of Jake's ilk. Unfortunately he'd paid little heed to Jake's wild tales of the future. One thing he knew for sure, if any of those stories were true the beauty who had stolen his heart at first glance would soon be scurrying for the next time gate back home.

But when Jen's gate fails to return her home, Nick begins to hope that he can buy the time to woo and win her. Jen unaware that Nick knows her secret fears she will lose him when he learns of the truth. But Nick has a secret of his own, the location of Jake's time gate. Will Jen forgive him when she learns that all he has to offer is a forever kind of love?

The Boar's Head Trio, Jen's three ghostly matchmaking ancestors are at it again! When I Fall in Love was a hilarious romantic romp as only Lynn Kurland can write. Poor Nick has to deal with his gloating siblings, his scheming grandmother, her shrewish marriage prospects and is forced to eat crow with his futuristic brother-in-law all while wrestling with his own conscience and losing his poor heart to a woman whose experienced luxuries he's never even dreamed of. Will a fortnight be enough to convince her that chivalry is more appealing than chocolate? When I Fall in Love is a charming tale that I highly recommend.

Now that all the McKinnons are happily wed, dare I hope that Zachary Smith will finally get his turn?

2 out of 5 stars My reaction- Pretty underwhelmed.......2007-09-04

I've been a fan of Kurland since book one, but I had a hard time making it through this novel. The writing was well done as usual, but the story didn't have much of a conflict or plot at all. I found myself bored about midway through. Her characters are beginning to fall into a sterotypical pattern, and there's no reality (I know, how much reality should I really expect in a time travel, right?) Here were my biggest issues:

For one thing- Jennifer is a flawless heroine and a paragon of virtue. That's great, except... I expect the hero and heroine of a good story to have their flaws in order to be able to grow by the end of the book. If there's no growth, what's the point in spending 400 pages with them? And how many women in their mid to late twenties are we supposed to believe remain virgins? You can write closed-door romance without turning the characters into unbelievably chaste angels who resist all human urges. Jennifer is a beautiful, red-blooded, modern woman, and the reader is supposed to believe she made it to 28 years old without going past the 'making out' point with any man, ever?

And finally- how is that through the entire story, which is largely taken up with Nicholas' angst over Jennifer's possible return to the future- after he's met her 14th century brother-in-law who lives in the 21st century, and has seen the ease with which Jennifer's family travels back in forth in time, does Nicholas not once stop to consider giving up his life and his family to go to the future with her? Why was it all her sacrifice to make?

This book just didn't do it for me. I expect better from Kurland- and her editors, for that matter- I think in the scene with Nicholas and Jake, Jake sat back in his chair 3 times in a 2 page stretch. It was nice to see old characters pop up, though I think it might have been excessive. I'm guessig for someone who has never read a Kurland book before, this would probably be impossible to follow.

All in all, I'm left feeling like I probably won't buy Kurland's next book, unless I'm out of all else to read. Very sad, since I used to eagerly look forward to each of her new books for months before they were released.

3 out of 5 stars Love the Author, liked the book but...........2007-07-16

the woman cried way too much. She cried because she was overwhelmed, she cried because she was sad, she cried when she was happy, tired, or hurt. She even cried when she was kissed. I counted a stretch of 17 pages between crying. that was about it. And of course, the obligatory line of "I'm not a crier" was stated several times. Umm.. yeah, she was.

5 out of 5 stars No smut, and none intended.......2007-07-09

Now, don't get me wrong. I love the smutty novels.
But when I am looking for straight romance, Lynn Kurland is my go-to girl. I have read all of her romances, many more than once. The characters stick with me, the stories are beautiful, the medieval detail is nice (and makes me want to improve my skill with the sword)and I often find myself sighing. Sound good? Read them all!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book, Despite Being Long.......2007-07-07

I enjoyed this book for the most part. If you have not read other Kurland books, you will probably be lost with alot of the characters. She likes to keep them in new stories.

The book was a little long. Not her best, but, worth reading.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ok Book Overall.......2007-08-20

Ok I don't normally write reviews, but I am a big fan of Murphy. But even though, I thought this book was good, it wasn't the best. The first book was way better. The first one had you holding on in excitement the entire time you read the book. This one seems to take too long to get to the point. The good stuff doesn't really happen until the last few chapters. I do however like that there are a few surprises concerning who the bad guy is. And what really happend to Ms. Tucker. But like I said you don't explore any of this till the end. So you will have to stay awake to get through the beginning/middle part of the book the best way you can without getting bored with it. Oh and you do learn more about her past too which was interesting. But I also agree with one of the other reviews about her crying all the time because she has powers and have to save the world. I mean really It's time to get with the program, come to terms about the whole shamanic destiny thing and move on. So all and all, I give this book 4 Stars.

2 out of 5 stars A Little Obvious.......2007-07-08

It's an okay read, but not spectacular. It seemed to rely heavily on Joanne not noticing things that she really probably should have--specially considering that she's a cop and been walking the beat. Surely when Faye pops out of nowhere, Joanne should have been at least suspicious and certainly very cautious before jumping in all the way. When Faye started talking about bringing over a powerful god (or whatever he was) to "fix" things, that should have raised all kinds alarm bells. Never once did Joanne even bother to ask her teacher anything about the god other than to go see him. Joanne just seemed to walk through the book without really actually thinking about anything.

4 out of 5 stars Sequel weakness?.......2007-05-15

Worth reading, but definitely weaker than the first book in the series, Urban Shaman. Hopefully, the next installment in the series will be tighter.

C. E. Murphy is on the right track (for me, anyway) with this series. I doesn't go off on interminable sidelines dealing with the heroine's romantic entanglements. Instead, it is focused on her self discovery and growth, and on the problem/mystery to be dealt with.

5 out of 5 stars Snakes and Raptors.......2007-04-28

It has to be perplexing to want to be a car mechanic and find yourself a cop on the beat instead. But for Joanne Walker this was only the beginning. Now she has discovered she is destined to be a shaman and that doesn't sit well with her at all. After surviving being fatally stabbed while saving the world in the previous volume - Urban Shaman - Joanne deserves a rest. But what she gets is a body in the Gym shower. When Joanne slips into the Dead Zone to find out how the young woman died she finds herself out of her depth and in deep trouble. A spirit that shouldn't have noticed her has, and thus begins another series of events where, kicking and screaming, Joanne must save the world once again.

Joanne investigates the death on her own and finds her path keeps criss-crossing that of a coven of witches who apparently need her help. The dead woman played an important role in the covens plans and Joanne would be the perfect replacement. All she has to is help with the reincarnation of and ancient wizard who is also intent on saving the world. Or maybe he isn't. Joanne must puzzle out the answers to this question and many others if she is to drag Seattle back from the edge of disaster, and, incidentally, get her head together about her spiritual powers.

I find I like this series more than I ever expected. There's no lack of books in the occult suspense/romance genre and it's always refreshing to read a book with a strong female lead that doesn't keep trying to commit suicide or get tangled up in kinky sex. C. E. Murphy is a strong writer, and her characters are interesting and believable. Joanne is a sassy, uppity lady with a good share of intelligence dealing with a very complicated reality. You can't help but like her, or her friend Gary the cab driver, or Captain Morrison, her boss and foremost critic. The story, with Joanne as narrator, moves well, and has many flashes of enjoyable sarcasm. Despite being the second volume, I think Thunderbird Falls can be read on its own - but you will want to read Urban Shaman anyway, so get both.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Not as Good.......2007-04-07

Unlikely shaman Joann Walker, Gary, and the Seattle police force return in this second installment after Urban Shaman. Finally facing the facts that all of her magic useage has effected the weather patterns of Seattle, Joann has little idea what to do about it. She has steadfastly tried to turn her back on magic for months. But a near brush with death on the cosmic level and the disappearance of her spirit guide Coyote have lead her to realise she needs a teacher.

Complicating her lessons is the coven she's recently become involved with. She happened to discover one of their members freshly deceased and is taking her place in order to solve the murder. It seems the covens purposes coincide with her own as they plan to bring back a 3,000 year old spirit to right the wrongness in Seattle's weather. But is everything on the up & up?

The romantic tension ratchets up a little bit more in this book. But who will Joann end up embracing? Morrison, Thor the mechanic, or even fatherly but mischievious Gary?

Some of what turns out to be pertinent detail in this book is intruduced to us very vaguely and briefly (uhuhm...cough...the Thunderbird...)while the rest of it seems to drag a bit in the middle. And I found the sacrifice bit cliched and felt that every reader would probably see it coming. But it was an entertaining book and I'm still looking forward to Coyote's reappearance in Coyote Dreams, the next book in the Walker Papers. Why they've retitled the series the Walker Papers I can only guess. And that guess would be, to make it sound more like the Dresden Files, another extremely popular paranormal series, but what do I know?

Book Description

Reece Gilmore has come a long way to see the stunning view below her. As the sole survivor of a brutal crime back East, she has been on the run, desperately fighting the nightmares and panic attacks that haunt her. Reece settles in Angel's Fist, Wyoming - temporarily, at least-and takes a job at a local diner. And now she's hiked this mountain all by herself. It was glorious, she thought, as she peered through her binoculars at the Snake River churning below.

Then Reece saw the man and woman on the opposite bank. Arguing. Fighting. And suddenly, the man was on top of the woman, his hands around her throat . . .

Enjoying a moment of solitude a bit farther down the trail is a gruff loner named Brody. But by the time Reece reaches him and brings him to the scene, the pair has vanished. When authorities comb the area where she saw the attack, they find nothing. No signs of struggle. No freshly turned earth. Not even a tire track.

And no one in Angel's Fist seems to believe her. After all, she's a newcomer in town, with a reputation for being jumpy and jittery-maybe even a little fragile. Maybe it's time to run again, to move on . . .

Reece Gilmore knows there's a killer in Angel's Fist, even if Brody, despite his seeming impatience and desire to keep her at arm's length, is the only one willing to believe her. When a series of menacing events makes it clear that someone wants her out of the way, Reece must put her trust in Brody-and herself-to find out if there is a killer in Angel's Fist before it's too late.

3 out of 5 stars Easy and entertaining in a soap-opera type of way.......2007-10-06

Angels Fall is not going to help you broaden your literature horizons but it will be entertaining, if you're looking for a simple book to keep you busy. The book is well written, I've never read any of Nora Roberts books before but I was impressed.

The story in a nutshell is about a woman who moves to a small town from the big city because of a personal tragedy. She leaves behind all of her belongings, friends, and family and decides to live in this particular small Wyoming town. As with most small towns, everyone knows everyone and every body's business. So when this young, attractive, and mysterious woman coming to their town everyone has their eyes on her every move.

She ends up witnessing a murder but when the police investigate, there is no evidence of any crime or altercation. Therefore, she must be crazy. The story springs from there and the ending is a fun twist. The story does have a muted love story in the middle of the mystery, which I like, so all in all it was a good book.

I would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries and for anyone who is looking for a book that you don't want to think too much when your reading it. Despite the fact that there is a murder in the book, the book is light and easy. Give it a try!

2 out of 5 stars Story really dragged - not her best work.......2007-09-29

(Review by Bob's wife, Kathy) I love Nora Roberts' books. I've read almost all of them. And just like with any author I've read a lot of, I know her writing voice. I know what kind of heroes and heroines she favors.

But still...

Angel's Fall was *too* predictable for me. I could tell what was going on in her apartment immediately. Who couldn't? And it didn't take but one sentence, early on, for me to figure out who the murderer was. In fact, it was so obvious, so annoying to know, that I skipped to the end to see if I was right. Yep, I was. This is something that I very rarely ever do when reading a mystery. Mystery solved, I could find no reason to read the rest of the book. The "love" story was predictable and the characters annoying. The whole thing just dragged and dragged.

If you are new to Nora, pick another book to start with. If you are an old Nora fan like I am, make this one a library pick.

Sorry, Ms. Roberts. I can easily think of half a dozen books of yours that are my favorites. This one, however, made me think you need to take a break and go on vacation for a few weeks...get a change of scenery and some new ideas! It happens to all of us.

3 out of 5 stars Angels Fall was just ok..........2007-09-03

I have to say I was disappointed in Angels Fall. I've read other Nora Roberts (and J.D. Robb) books and in comparison, this one really dragged; I had to fight my way through to finish it. The suspense picked up when they found who the murdered woman was and started to put the pieces together. Overall, rather predictable and not so exciting. I'm glad to be finished with this one...

1 out of 5 stars Most Predictable Book I've Ever Read.......2007-08-09

This book was so predictable. I knew who the killer was half way through the book. The characters were good, thats about it. It's not a good suspense novel.

5 out of 5 stars Strangely murder and humor mix well........2007-08-08

The already fragile victim from a shocking crime, survivor Reece Gilmour drifts into the small town of Angel's Fist, then stays while her car gets repaired. She gets a job as a cook, gets a small apartment. All big steps. But she still needs her doors locked and the lights on at night... She meets Brody, a local crime writer, and the sexual tension immediately tightens as Brody sees past her frightened, brittle surface to the incredibly brave woman, battling to overcome her fears. One day, on a deceptively peaceful hike, Reece is horrified to witness a terrible murder. She sees a man strangle a woman, who fights back until she dies. Freaked beyond belief, Reece runs screaming to Brody, just a little further down the trail, but when he and the sheriff investigate there's absolutely no evidence that anyone was there. No murdered woman, no body, no disturbance on the trails, nothing. Everyone except Brody thinks Reece is nuts, and they don't believe her story. Then funny little things start to happen, making Reece doubt her own sanity. Brody doesn't, however, and his faith in Reece makes her fall absolutely head over heels in love with him - to his disconcertment! Between the food, the intense loving, Brody wrestling with his book, and Reece wrestling with her demons, this is such a gripping read you won't want to put it down. ...I nearly guessed the villain, but I was wrong...

4 out of 5 stars Stakes are all the rage for the new season...........2007-09-18

The Rest Falls Away, like its main character vampire hunting debutante Victoria, grows into something quite different in its final chapters from what it starting out as at the beginning. There was almost a light silly quality to most of the book with the chatty vampire discussions of the "aunts", the goofy chapter titles and all of the superficial regency romance trappings: descriptions of Victoria's ball gowns, accessories and hairstyles. But that is Victoria's world at the beginning of the book, when she is just playing at being a vampire hunter and enjoying the freedom it gives her from the role that society expects her to play. She believes she can balance these two wierdly different halfs of her life: the excitement of the hunt, in addition to love and a family. Unfortunately, Victoria eventually discovers that she can't really have it all and the discovery comes at great cost, transforms Victoria, gives the book a greater depth than I expected.

4 out of 5 stars Solid debut of the series - 4.5 of 5 stars.......2007-05-11

A historical romance/vampire novel? Yup ... exactly. Victoria is preparing for her big society debut, when she learns that she is the next in line for the family vampire hunter legacy. But she does have a choice: she can choose to accept her legacy, or she can choose, as her mother did before her, to turn the cheek and live her life blind to the dangers out there. Will love tempt her away for her legacy?

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Not a romance tho.......2007-05-09

I didn't realize this was supposed to be a romance LOL.
The book was great, I love the SL. If you like Hamilton, Kim Harrison & Kelly Armstrong you will like this book. I can't wait to see where she goes next.

4 out of 5 stars The Rest Falls Away is Fun and Fresh!.......2007-05-07

The Rest Falls Away is a debut novel by Colleen Gleason. I've been meaning to pick up a copy since it came out and the debut contest was the perfect motivation to do it. This novel takes the battle between good and evil into the streets of historical London.

When Victoria, 19, begins having unusual dreams she goes to her Aunt Eustacia and discovers that she is the last in a long line of vampire hunters. Victoria Gardella has been born with the strength and skills to become a Venator. But first, she must pass a test and kill a vampire, unfortunately, this test falls on the same night of her debut ball. Victoria must balance her role in society, with her role as a lean, mean, vampire-slaying machine.

Lord Rockley, Phillip, is the tons most eligible bachelor and has set his eyes on Victoria. She can't help but embrace his love. She realizes that being a proper young socialite and a strong venator is no easy task. The silent and harsh Maximilian, fellow venator, and Sebastian, the handsome and humorous tavern owner, are the two other men in Victoria's life. There is a tantalizing possibility that Phillip is not the only man for Victoria.

Behind the growth and development of Victoria, is the evil machinations of Lillith, the daughter of Judas. Lillith is the queen of the vampires and would like nothing more than to see the last of the Gardella's destroyed. There is a venator prophecy that it can only be one of the Gardella line to kill Lillith. Is Victoria the one?

Colleen has captured the feeling of the era and placed the reader in the heart of a tantalizing story. Victoria is an enjoyable character. I enjoyed reading about her. The writing is solid and Colleen's voice is strong. There were no skips or difficult writing to get through. The plot is tight and while I'm left with many questions, they are the kind that just increase my interest on reading the second book, the continuation of Victoria's tale.

If you like historical romance or if you enjoy a good vampire tale - this is definitely a book you may want to consider.

Book Description

When Ukyo rescues a stray dog and names it Kuro, he soon learns that he may have found a rare breed--his new dog can talk and magically transform into a hunky human! With his dog now taking the form of a hot man and licking him in various places, what is Ukyo to do?!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It's okay to love your dog..........2007-05-22

...but you shouldn't LOVE your dog.

I don't know why I purchased this (morbid curiosity?). I knew exactly what it was about and I passed over it for months before I finally broke down and ordered it.

The title story is about a love affair between a dog and his master. While the drawings were nice (I must admit that Kuro in human form was beautiful! I could have looked at page after page of him in various poses and been a happy-camper.); it was hard to get past the fact that it was a love affair between a dog and its master...a dog...a...DOG?! There was absolutely nothing sexy about this story (aside from the fact that humanoid Kuro was one marvelous piece of eye candy). Kuro was a dog, who acted like a dog even when they were doing the nasty. I have a dog; that's not sexy to me! Aside from the fact that Kuro as a human was really hot; I wouldn't exactly call this story engrossing.

The second pairing is mostly why I gave this book 3 stars (that and Kuro in human form *sigh* soo cute...soo, soo cute...). What could have been a run-of-the-mill tale of childhood friends growing up to become lovers was given a little twist and told with more flair than I expected after reading that sucky first story. This manga-ka really seems to excel at those close-up drawings of the characters faces (ie, the first time Kuro takes human form...and almost every other page he is in human form; Kentaro when he is looking in the mirror and preparing to meet the adult "Kasumi-chan"; Kasumi on the park bench). They are extremely expressive and even Kuro gains a little depth (and did I mention how cute he is?). And Kuro's cameo in "Pinpoint Lovers" was a cute touch.

The third pairing barely deserves a mention. It was some nonsense about a goldfish that turns into a long-haired girly-boy. Who cares?! And, BTW, I like my men to look like men.

Whenever I pick-up this book, I flip through the first story to look at the pretty pictures of Kuro in human form (I refuse to waste my time reading the story again); then I read "Summers Here Again" and "Pinpoint Lovers" (if only Kasumi and Kentaro's story had been longer); and then, I put the book back on the shelf (the third pairing doesn't even exist as far as I am concerned).

5 out of 5 stars Bestiality and Cartoons.......2007-05-21

The artwork in this volume is extremely interesting, and the stories are cute, although many of them do involve sex with animals.

4 out of 5 stars More comedy than romance, but still good!.......2007-04-29

To me, the main story was missing some more development, more seriousness, more romance. I was also disappointed that it wasn't more explicit, but I liked this book anyway. The cute comedy makes it alright as is. The art is pretty good too. Not so much the faces, in my opinion, but the physiques. The story about the childhood friends was pretty good and doesn't leave you hanging, but I wanted to read more anyway. The goldfish story wasn't bad. It was short, which is probably perfect for a story about a weird, dream-like one-night stand, but also left me wanting more. I suppose that's the sign of a good story, but very frustrating indeed. Other reviewers recommended Wild Rock. It's been a long while since I read that, but I remember liking it. And it has the same great art. As far as girly "uke" (the person being "pursued") go - I don't prefer them, but there's A LOT of them in yaoi manga. So you have to get used to it or severely limit your yaoi intake. And you know you want your yaoi!

3 out of 5 stars Bestiality again!?.......2007-04-11

Quit it with the bestiality already!!! I mean...ahem...if that's what you're into, this is definitely for you. First a dog, then a goldfish...it's got you covered. I have to admit, I've owned my copy ever since it was first released and haven't wanted to sell it yet. But that's because I absolutely LOVE the second story (hence the 3 stars). I mean a super-hot uke that not only has attitude, but also enough guts to stand up for himself: You know you've got me sold.

I'm not even gonna comment on the first and third story; but the second one makes it almost worth buying. The art is great and both men are drawn incredibly masculine (no girly guys here). Yes, it's kinda predictable and waa~ay too short. But it was nice. So my advice to you: if you've got extra cash, OR if there's a really good deal, get it. At the end, there's an extra bonus with a detailed interview that gives you an inside look at the making of the author's other book, Wild Rock. So let that be your incentive to help you decide if you really want it or not

3 out of 5 stars An okay yaoi.......2007-04-08

The first story about Ukyo and Kuro is pretty good, funny, and decent art. It's not rape, like one reviewer sad, and it's plenty interesting. It's a bit weird, since Kuro is definitely a dog, who just happens to be able to change into a pretty hot man, but his mind is still fairly animalistic and basic.

The second story is good, great art, good story, angsty and all that if you're into that. About reunited boyhood friends who are more than friends.

The third story was fairly weak in my opinion, about a fish who can turn into a VERY girly looking boy. I'm not into super girly boys, so this story was not very interesting to me. And it was really short, with very little development.

As a whole, worth a read, but nothing super fantastic. Just kind of fun!

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining battle of wills.......2007-07-07

We were first introduced to these two strong characters in FANTA C, which featured Thad and Elizabeth. From the moment Adam and Lilah laid eyes on each other, it was obvious that getting these two together would prove to be very interesting and Sandra Brown certainly made sure of that in ADAM'S FALL.

As the owner of the well-known Cavanaugh hotel chain, Adam is a wealthy and handsome business magnate who had the world at his feet. Then his world comes crumbling down when an unfortunate mountain climbing expedition killed two of his friends and left him with a debilitating spinal injury. But for this once seemingly invincible entrepreneur, the effect is not only physical. Despite having numerous doctors at his disposal, no amount of therapy could help him. But two of his close friends refused to give up. Elizabeth hoped that her sister Lilah could help him. But first they must convince her to take on the job, which is a challenge in itself knowing how much Lilah detested Adam.

Despite her rebellious and carefree persona, Lilah Mason is one of the best in her field. Possessing a remarkable spirit and unwavering determination, she has helped many patients into recovery. But she is about to face the toughest challenge of her life when her sister and brother-in-law beg her to help Adam. Lilah knows that men like Adam are the worst patients. Worst of all, there is no stopping the ongoing antagonism between them from the moment they met. However, is she willing to set this aside and let compassion take over?

This was quite a delightful read. Lilah is such a riot - vibrant, charming and stubborn. I enjoyed the way she turned Adam's life upside down the moment she stepped into his villa. The way she dealt with his embitterness and bore the brunt of his temper and recalcitrance showed her strength and proved her to be a very worthy partner for Adam, whose arrogance would have you cheering for Lilah. While Adam's attitude may prove too much at times, I believe that the author was trying to show us the emotional and psychological effects that a serious injury could cause. And this is the message of the story. It shows us that determination, compassion and inner strength can make a whole world of difference.

Pretty good for an earlier novel...

2 out of 5 stars These two are supposed to be adults? .......2006-06-02

This book was about a man who was injured in a mountain climbing accident and his relationship with his physical therapist. Lilah and Adam had been previously acquainted and hated each other tremendously. You'd think this would be a good prelude to a steamy romance, but it was not. Adam speaks to Lilah in such a filthy manner it's a wonder how she ever falls in love with him. It's also a wonder how he ever falls in love with her ~ her character is unbearable. Her "tough love" approach should have applied only to his therapy, but it didn't. She had a chip on her shoulder throughout the novel and was obnoxious, angry and downright hostile to Adam. I saw hate all over the place, but never love.

This novel was a huge disappointment. I felt the story was rushed and underdeveloped. Brown is a good author, but this wasn't one of her better books. If you're looking for a good romance by Brown, buy SUNNY CHANDLER'S RETURN or LED ASTRAY.

4 out of 5 stars Hate You! Love You!.......2005-09-29

I enjoyed reading this story about Lilah and Adam. Their hate love, in that order, relationship was very lively and it just made you want to keep reading to find out how in the world they would end up together or if they would end up together. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five was because there were some scenes in the story that I just thought needed more work, especially Adams girlfriend/lover, or whatever she was, but overall very entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-09-27

Adam Cavanaugh was on top of his life, young, successful, rich, good looking, athletic, you name it, nothing can go wrong with him. Then a mountain climbing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Lilah Mason was his nemesis long before the unfortunate accident. They simply rubbed each other the wrong way since the first time they met. Lilah despised Adam's lifestyle, and the dislike was mutual as Adam also hated her sassy comments, the way she dressed, etc. Too bad, Lilah was the best physical therapist everybody in his circle knew. So they voted for her to be his physical therapist. At first she refused and he fought all the time. But Lilah didn't back off, she had lots of tricks up her sleeves to deal with difficult patient. Adam was in for the shock of his life, his brooding was no contest against Lilah's determination and cajoling, and although they were bickering day in and out, there were also tender moments. The words banters are hilariously funny. I love Lilah and poor Adam is a worthy opponent for her.
I have read three books with the same plot and story line: Come Lie with Me by Linda Howard and Promise Me Forever by Debbie Macomber and needless to say Adam's Fall by Sandra Brown is THE BEST of three.

5 out of 5 stars her best .......2005-09-01

I am usually wary of Sandra Brown books...she makes her charaters unnecessarily complicated (usually attached but drawn to someone else types) that I usually dont enjoy. But this book was a bombshell. The first heroine with an actual spine. Easily her best, in my opinion!

5 out of 5 stars De Camp Delights.......2007-04-26

Lest Darkness Fall by L. Sprague de Camp is the perfect introduction to this golden-age great science-fiction author. De Camp, along with Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard and others, were all part of John W. Campbell's, editor of Astounding and Unknown, stable of writers. These men created modern Science-Fiction. De Camp pretty much created the alternate universe story with this novel. Fans of de Camp can discuss his life and works at a Yahoo Discussion Group called d_for_de_Camp. Hopefully, one day soon, de Camp will be rediscovered and appreciated for the talent he is. His books always delight and should be reprinted for a new generation of readers. This book is one of his best.

5 out of 5 stars De Camp's masterpiece... plus bonus material!.......2007-01-14

"Lest Darkness Fall" (which is by far the bulk of this book) is the most amazing historical novel I've ever read, deliberately picking an extremely obscure period and characters and yet making them come brightly alive. Drake's short story, in comparison, just can't hold its own -- although it's quite interesting, on its own terms, particularly if you ARE familiary with Livy's Book 1 (and, believe me, you SHOULD be:-). No matter: the book as a whole is a bargain, and an absolute MUST

4 out of 5 stars Can History Be Changed?.......2005-04-29

This book pairs L. Sprague de Camp's "Lest Darkness Fall" with David Drake's "To Bring The Light". Also included is an introduction by Harry Turtledove. "Lest Darkness Fall" is one of the earliest examples of Alternate History, and is by far the best of the two stories in this book. In 1952 it was ranked 11th on the Astounding/Analog All-Time Poll, and in 1956 it was ranked 20th on the same poll. It is a shame that this story has been largely been forgotten since then, since it is clearly well researched and a real pleasure to read.

It is the story of Martin Padway, a student of history who is in Rome working on his thesis. He is sent back in time, to the year 535 A.D., when a lightning bolt strikes him. After realizing his position, he decides to try to prevent the Dark Ages, and finds himself increasingly pulled into the politics of the time. It is a fairly short novel, and well worth reading.

"To Bring The Light" is clearly based on "Lest Darkness Fall". In this story the main character is Flavia Herosilla, a well educated woman living in Rome in the year 751 A.D., during the celebration of the city's 1,000th birthday. As with Martin Padway, she is sent back in time by a lightning strike. She is sent to the time of the founding of Rome. Unlike the first story, where Martin Padway tries to change history, Flavia tries to recreate the founding of Rome based on the legends that she knows.

"Lest Darkness Fall" is a classic that should be read by anyone interested in Alternate Histories. "To Bring The Light", though not as good, is still an interesting story, and makes a good companion to "Lest Darkness Fall".

4 out of 5 stars Creative, Concise and Appealing.......2004-02-29

Martin Padway, mild-mannered archaeologist, is visiting Rome when he is thrust backwards in time... all the way back to the sixth century A.D. The Roman Empire is fading fast... facing foes on all sides... with the thousand-year blight we now know as the Dark Ages fast approaching. Can a single man -- Padway --change history and prevent the fall of Rome? Nothing less than the 'Age of Enlightenment' hangs in the balance.

The literary descendent of 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court', de Camp lets Padway grapple with raw issues. I found these areas the story's most interesting sections: how to make a living, having arrived with only modern currency in hand... how to avoid the authorities, given their proclivity to brand any new technology 'witchcraft'... how to assemble allies, fend off enemies and stay healthy in an environment not conducive to outsiders.

Because it was written in 1939, there is a level of 'political incorrectness' that is entertainingly fresh. Italian women, Muslims, the French and others are insulted with broad brush-strokes. Nonetheless, it is historically informative, important from a literary standpoint and makes for interesting reading. Despite its age, it is a fluid, fast read. de Camp had a lot of interesting things to say... and said them well.

3 out of 5 stars A seminal work of alternative history........2003-01-27

It is a mark of the quality of this book that it has never been out of print since it was published several decades ago. This is the book that started the genre of alternative history. He throws his hero, Martin Padway, into dark ages Rome with only the contents of his pockets and his wits. Can a modern man make a comfortable life for himself in the ancient world?

It is a short read, but very well written. Le Camp builds us a time travel theory and a whole world in the past without needing to engage in in-depth world building. And for students of Byzantine history, it covers an interesting era when Justinian tried to reel the Ostrogothic run Italy back into the Eastern Roman Empire. Apart from the alternative elements the book is very historically correct.

As a bonus you get the David Drake novella "To bring the light" another alternative history about the founding of Rome.

ON BLUE FALLS POND by Susan Crandall
February 6, 2006

Amazon rating 3.5/5

"This is the story of a woman who ran away from her hometown of Dawson, Tennessee, after a devastating fire took the lives of her husband Andrew and her unborn child. Now, two years later, Glory Harrison has returned to be with her grandmother Tula, who is slowly losing her eyesight. Glory gradually recalls why she ran away (most memories of her husband had been erased) and with the help of an old friend, Eric Wilson (the fire chief who saved her life), she finally remembers everything - the good and the bad.

The book is filled with many interesting characters including Eric's two-year-old autistic son Scott (his mother Jill is in denial). Eric and Jill are divorced, due to her infidelities with a man named Jason, and while Jill seems to be a very distracted mother, Eric is there as much as he can be for Scott, a child who is slowly retreating into his own world. Tula is Glory's headstrong maternal grandmother, and despite the fact that Glory grew up in the city (her mother Clarice was embarrassed about being born in the hollow), Glory became the closest of all Tula's grandchildren. They have a special bond. Now that Tula's eyesight is failing, Glory fears that soon Tula may need help permanently." - Complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton

I enjoyed this story that takes places in the small town of Dawson, Tennessee, and found the mystery behind the fire that took the life of Glory's husband and unborn baby intriguing. Crandall's strong point is her plot, and while I enjoyed getting to know each of the characters, some of them were a bit overly dramatic, although they did fit into the overall scheme of the novel. Those who enjoy southern romances, ON BLUE FALLS POND is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional book.......2006-01-24

Susan Crandall has written another deeply moving book in On Blue Falls Pond.

Glory Harrison fled Dawson, Tenn., after the tragic deaths of her husband and their unborn child. Now two years later her beloved Granny Tula eyesight is failing so Glory returns to help. Memories of that tragic night are slowly coming back and Glory finds a friend in Eric Wilson.

Fire chief Eric Wilson rescued Glory from that long ago fire. He has always felt a connection with her. Their paths cross again since her Granny is watching Eric's young troubled toddler Scott. Eric's ex wife thinks it's all just the trauma over the divorce but Eric is convinced something is seriously wrong with his son.

Glory and Eric's concerns begin to overlap, Tula's failing vision and the problems it makes for them both. This eventually draws them closer but as Glory's memories become clearer, someone will stop at nothing to keep those memories buried.

On Blue Falls Pond is a book that will make you remember why you love to read. The characters are just like everyday people with real ups and downs. You are drawn in from page one and it takes a grip on your soul. The deepening relationship between Eric and Glory is compelling and sizzling. I couldn't put this book down once I started.

Susan Crandall is a star on the rise.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars and Worth Every Bit........2006-01-12

When I rate a book, it helps to remember that there will be times . . . when a book is TRULY a 9 or 10. A 9 or 10 rating shows I feel the book is one of the best books ever! Is ON BLUE FALLS POND a 10? Well, to me, a 10 rating is perfection! So no, ON BLUE FALLS POND is not a 10, but it certainly is a 9! Susan Crandall's ON BLUE FALLS POND is a beautiful story.

After nearly two years, Glory Harrison comes home - home to grandmother, love, and childhood roots! In reality, Glory Harrison reluctantly returns to find herself. Eighteen months ago, Glory lost everything in a devastating fire. She lost a husband. She lost a child. Now she returns to face fleeting memories and terrifying fear.

Eric Wilson lives every day with his own fear - fear for a little boy. He fears for a small son who is slowly drifting away from him. He watches, each day, as the child retreats further into another world - the world of autism. Undeniably, Eric Wilson battles each new day. He battles his ex-wife, who refuses to see the steady decline of their son and he battles his own dread and guilt. Was the divorce responsible for their child's steady decline?

ON BLUE FALLS POND is a splendid story about two lonely people with common small-town roots. Two lonely people with problems and worries. Two lonely people who discover they can't live without one another. Two lonely people who make Crandall's reader want to share in happy endings.

Susan Crandall should be proud! ON BLUE FALLS POND is a poignant, convincing story. Crandall absorbed me in her tale; she stirred me with her words; she made me believe! Her characters are well drawn and remarkably ordinary and this common ordinariness is Crandall's strong suit! Her setting and her characters ARE in every small town across the land . . . and THIS gives the reader belief . . . and the handling of the grandmother's character is true writing genius - crème de la crème!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Read - Highly Recommend!.......2006-01-10

Eighteen months ago, Glory Harrison had fled Tennessee after a fire ravaged her life leaving her without a husband, a home, and her unborn daughter. After many therapists and as many moves, she still felt an emptiness where once there had been a soul. After a heartfelt call from her ailing Gran, Glory knew it was now time to face her demons. In coming home again Glory Harrison had to face all the brutal truths of her past, even the painful ones that she had buried along with her unborn child. Her first morning back, the anguish returned with a vengeance as she looked into the face of the man who had saved her life, fire chief Eric Wilson. From that first eventful morning her memories started to return, and along with sage advice from her no nonsense, plain speaking Gran she was able to look at her past with a clearer understanding. Along with the strength and support she soon found in Eric's arms, she would find the strength to face her demons and begin a healing process. As Glory climbed out of the prison within her heart, she was able to open it to Eric, in accepting his toddler son's limitations. Unfortunately, the closer Glory came to rediscovering the truth behind the fire, the closer someone came to driving her away for good!

Susan Crandall gave wonderful and very deeply moving character studies for both main characters that will both exhilarate and soothe ones soul in this very beautiful and moving story. While handling the complexities of the two main characters admirably, she also blended in some interesting secondary storylines dealing with the macular degeneration of her gran; autism of Scott; and background into dogs for more than just for seeing eye service. Well-written, highly enjoyable, and lovingly crafted, this was one extremely robust and terrific read that I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars powerful psychological drama .......2006-01-03

Eighteen months ago Glory Harrison is rescued from an inferno by Dawson, Tennessee Fire Chief Eric Wilson; her husband Andrew died in the blaze and not long afterward she miscarried. While her beloved septuagenarian Granny Tula Baker believes that God has a reason to put her granddaughter through such a tragedy, Glory, though she remembers nothing from that tragic night no longer believes. She flees her hometown as the memories haunt her; no place feels like a home anymore.

Tula asks Glory to come home for a short stay so she can see her one last time as her eyes are failing her. Though reluctant to return to the site of her tragedy, Glory would face demons for her beloved Granny Tula so she comes home. Glory becomes upset when she thinks Eric is using Granny Tula to watch his three year old son Scott, whom he believes has a behavioral problem though his ex-wife Jill denies this. As she sees him help Granny Tula she revises her belief. She begins to remember what happened on that fatal night, but will it be in time to prevent more misfortune from reoccurring?

ON BLUE FALLS POND is a strong glimpse at how individuals react to crisis differently with some hiding or running away while others finding solace to help them cope. Granny Tula turned to God after the tragedy while Glory turned away from God; Eric accepts that there is problem with his son while Jill rejects any notion that the child has any deep rooted behavioral issues. The late exciting suspense takes away from the core value of a powerful psychological drama that grips the audience once Glory starts shaking as she approaches Dawson.

Nestled into the hills of the Northern Cascade Mountains in Washington state, Liam and Mike (Michaela) Campbell have a picture-perfect marriage and family. While Liam enjoys the comforts of being a small-town doctor with an old family name, Mike cares for their two children and her beloved horses. But when a horrible accident leaves Mike in a coma, Liam frantically searches for a way to ignite her memories and awaken her. What he discovers makes him question the foundations of their love, as Mike has a secret past as "Kayla" and a previous marriage to her first love, Julian True. Though still in a coma, Mike responds to these stories. Liam knows he must contact Julian, and gamble his future on the past memories of a woman whose true identity and feelings are unknown to him.

Kristin Hannah's talent for writing poignant tales of duty, passion, identity and family bonds made last year's On Mystic Lake a bestseller, and will certainly rake in the fans this time. (Imagine Danielle Steel without the Gucci bags or aging corporate CEOs.) While the majority of the novel has our heroine knocked out on a hospital gurney, Hannah makes valiant efforts to bring Mike's character to life, and Liam's enduring love should keep you rooting for him and reaching for the hanky. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Book Description

When Mikaela Campbell, beloved wife and mother of two, falls into a coma, it is up to her husband, Liam, to hold the family together, to care for their grieving, frightened children. Day after day, he sits by her bedside, telling stories of the precious life they have built, hoping, always hoping, that she will wake up. Then he discovers evidence of her secret past: a hidden first marriage to Julian True, a man no woman could resist . . . or forget. Desperate to bring Mikaela back at any cost, Liam turns to the one person who could make her respond— and who could take her out of his arms forever.

ANGEL FALLS is a moving portrayal of marriage and commitment, and of an ordinary man who risks everything in the name of love.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful read!.......2005-09-27

Mikaela (Mica) Campbell is thrown from a horse and is so seriously injured that she falls into a long-term coma. Mica's husband, Dr. Liam Campbell, is left to care for their children. While sitting by Mica's hospital bed, willing her to recover, Liam talks endlessly to her. He recreates their life together through their shared history.

Inadvertently, Liam discovers the identity of Mica's first husband and father to her first child. Julian is a 'huge' movie star who was the love of her life. Julian, a shallow man, is convinced that he may be the person who is able to bring Mica out of her coma and agrees to travel to her bedside. Mica emerges from the coma, and what happens then is what helps her look at life through different 'colored' glasses.

Angel Falls is a family drama about how tragedy impacts the individual members and how they rise to the occasion and pull together. And it is about a loving, gentle husband who deeply loves his wife and will do what is necessary to help her recover; even if it means he might lose her.

Hannah's characters are richly drawn and the plot is compelling. It is a book you will enjoy and I guarantee that you will recommend it to others.

Armchair Interviews highly recommends Angel Falls.

5 out of 5 stars Angel Falls by Kristin Hannah.......2005-08-19

This is the first novel I've read by this author, and I'm on Amazon right now searching for more of her books! On one hand, I agree with some viewers that this was a light read, but on the other hand, it was also emotionally intriging. I have never cried while reading a book, but I did so at the beginning AND at that end of this novel! What a great story -- I couldn't put it down. You are rooting for the main couple in this book from start to finish, and your heart just goes out to the children in the story. I can't say enough good things about Ms. Hannah's writing. I'm certainly a dedicated fan now.

5 out of 5 stars A Touching Story.......2005-01-23

At the end of his ideas, he calls Julian, hoping he will remember her and come to visit her and be able to awake her. 4 out of 5 stars Which is the true love?.......2004-10-10

This is a very enjoyable romance novel. Married to a doctor, Liam Campbell, in a small town in northwest Washington state, Mikaela falls from a horse, strikes her head and enters a coma from which it seems she may never awaken. But Liam, the narrator of this tale, does not give up hope. He spends long hours by her bed telling her of his love, her two kids and memories they share, hoping something will awaken the woman within. His efforts produce naught. Then he discovers in Mikaela's closet mementoes she has kept of her first marriage. He knew she was married before but is startled to learn that she was married to world-famous movie star Julian True. Seeing the mementoes, he realizes that she has never stopped loving True. When he mentions True's name, she blinks. After much anguish he decides to contact True in the hope that his voice may awaken Mikaela from her slumber. True comes to town, the plot thickens and in the end true love prevails. But is it True love? Read the book to find out.
