"Fifteen minutes!" you say. "That's too good to be true!" Okay, author Joan Bolker admits she gave her book the title Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day to get the reader's attention. And she admits that it's unlikely you'll actually finish a dissertation at that speed. As she tells her clients, however, a mere 15 minutes is much better than no writing at all when they're stuck. As a clinical psychologist who cofounded the Harvard Writing Center, Bolker has helped hundreds of writers complete their dissertations. She offers suggestions on how to create a writing addiction so that you feel incomplete if you don't write every day and stresses the need to set reasonable goals and deadlines for yourself to keep from getting discouraged. She also offers strategies for dealing with both internal and external distractions and for fending off writer's block. Even more important is the advice on some of the more awkward issues related to dissertation writing, such as how to choose your adviser carefully. (For example, when faced with the tradeoff between a famous advisor who is inaccessible and a less famous advisor who is willing to make time for you, Bolker advises, "If choosing a politically advantageous, famous advisor makes it unlikely that you'll complete your degree, it's clearly not worth it.") The book even includes a helpful appendix for advisers that could become the basis for an honest discussion of what student and adviser can expect from each other. Throughout this excellent book, Bolker acts as a therapist, cheerleader, and drill sergeant, all rolled into one.

While some of the book's advice is of interest only to dissertation writers, much of the information--on battling writer's block, for instance--is valuable to anybody engaged in writing. Rather than being filled with rules defining how to become a great writer, Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day is about finding the process by which you can be the most productive--it's a set of exercises that you can use to find out more about you and the way you write. Along the way, you'll do a bit of writing. And that's what matters, especially when you experience writer's block--as Bolker says, "Write anything, because writing is writing." With its helpful advice and supportive tone, Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day should be required reading for anyone considering writing a dissertation. --C.B. Delaney

Book Description

Expert writing advice from the editor of the Boston Globe best-seller, The Writer's Home Companion

Dissertation writers need strong, practical advice, as well as someone to assure them that their struggles aren't unique. Joan Bolker, midwife to more than one hundred dissertations and co-founder of the Harvard Writing Center, offers invaluable suggestions for the graduate-student writer. Using positive reinforcement, she begins by reminding thesis writers that being able to devote themselves to a project that truly interests them can be a pleasurable adventure. She encourages them to pay close attention to their writing method in order to discover their individual work strategies that promote productivity; to stop feeling fearful that they may disappoint their advisors or family members; and to tailor their theses to their own writing style and personality needs. Using field-tested strategies she assists the student through the entire thesis-writing process, offering advice on choosing a topic and an advisor, on disciplining one's self to work at least fifteen minutes each day; setting short-term deadlines, on revising and defending the thesis, and on life and publication after the dissertation. Bolker makes writing the dissertation an enjoyable challenge.

4 out of 5 stars Good Motivator.......2007-07-03

It didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know but it provides a good timeline and approach to get you motivated.

5 out of 5 stars practical guide.......2007-06-05

When I was writing my own dissertation, I found this book to be very helpful. The notion of working on one's dissertation for fifteen minutes a day is not far out. However, when there is dissertation dread, it is hard to relish the idea of working daily on the dissertation. I found that by following that advice, I would think about the dissertation more and developed a friendlier relationship with the whole project.

The approaches to developing a process, to writing a first draft, to managing the advisor relationship, and to dealing with interruptions were all very helpful. I recommend this book highly to my friends and my clients.

4 out of 5 stars Make a Mess then Clean It Up.......2007-06-03

For academic reasons I've been reading a fair number of these little writing guides lately. Most of them turn out to be useless you-can-do-it cheerleading or weak opinionating with little relevance beyond the author's personal experience. This guide by Bolker rises above the pack because it's based not just on her own personal writing but also on her extensive experience in counseling graduate students from all walks of life. Granted, the title of this book is all wrong, which Bolker even admits in her introduction. Writing a dissertation in just fifteen minutes a day is far from realistic, and Bolker advises that you work on it at least fifteen minutes a day. One truly unique aspect of Bolker's counseling for graduate school writers is her advice on how to beat writer's block. In her system, write anything at all, no matter how sloppy, just to stay in the game - and then clean it up later. Bolker also has a unique take on feeding your writing habit as if it were an addiction, with the threat of withdrawal symptoms that should be avoided. The only problem with this book is that Bolker extends her advice on the writing process into larger graduate school matters - topics that are useful, but too important and varied for the quick treatment they receive here. Stick with Bolker's knowledge of the writing regimen. [~doomsdayer520~]

4 out of 5 stars Reduces the butteflies.......2007-05-14

Joan Bolker's personal experience makes this book a credible source and therefore useful reference for your doctoral arsenal. She has started and failed and started and succeeded in her quest for her own doctoral dissertation. The book outlines effective methods and ice breakers in beginning the dissertation process, the mechanics, and one's mindset for doing so. I recommend this book to anyone embarking on this journey.

5 out of 5 stars Format's great and so's the reading.......2007-05-13

This book has good, sensible information to help a person start, re-start, or finish a diss. The reading is smooth and easy (versus that particular dissertation stop-and-go, read-and-reread style I hate so much). The book is clear and concise and straight-forward. Get one, read it, get to writing! :-)

Book Description

A new collection of authoritative contributions on the state of the art of electrochemical deposition
Since the last edition of Modern Electroplating was published over a quarter century ago, electrochemical deposition has evolved into a mature science, with many new and potential applications. To address these developments, Modern Electroplating, Fourth Edition presents an entirely new collection of contributions on a wide range of cutting-edge topics, from electrodeposition of semiconductors to environmental considerations.
Geared to experienced deposition practitioners and novices alike, the new edition provides clear, thorough, up-to-date explanations of the principles and applications of highly relevant deposition techniques. It not only replaces the Third Edition, a very useful resource on electroplating processes, but, in addition, highlights the transition in the electronics industry from physical to electrochemical methods, especially with regard to next-generation technologies such as copper interconnect. Coverage includes:
* Electrodeposition of various metals and metal alloys
* Electrodeposition of semiconductors and electrodeposition on nonconductors
* Electrodeposition of conductive polymers
* Electroless deposition of various metals and alloys
* Preparation procedures for deposition
* Manufacturing technologies, monitoring, testing, and control
* Deposition and the environment

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of Electroplating. Editing needs work........2007-06-03

I have read through about a third of this book in an effort to update my electroplating knowledge and learn about some areas of electroplating I don't normally practice.

Generally speaking, this is an excellent review of the field and has been updated to include information on additive use in copper electroplating and developments in alloy electroplating for electronics.

On the downside, the editing of the book as a whole seems to be non-existent. The quality of individual chapters varies widely. This leaves me with the impression that Schlesinger and Paunovic only checked to see if the chapters were written in English and stopped at that point. Some chapters are a delight to read (like the chapter on palladium) while others are peppered with typographical errors, missing equations and such like things (e.g. the chapter on chromium). Also the varying values of Faraday's constant throughout the book indicates that no effort was made to enforce consistency of constants and units throughout the book. I was so irritated by this that I spent two or three hours finding out exactly what Faraday's constant should be (it's 96,485.3 Coulombs/mole). I found a good explanation of Faraday's constant on [...]

Stairway design and construction is considered a cornerstone of homebuilding. To address this important topic, Building Stairs contains design, fabrication, and installation information for a wide variety of options, from simple, site-built utility staircases to elaborate spirals.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Why bother.......2007-07-12

The book addressed building stair-related structures that were just not relevant to standard stair building needs...

2 out of 5 stars Not enough detail.......2006-09-30

So I don't know why I bought this book without reading the previous reviews. I usually check those first and avoid books like this. It had too many types of stairs to be documented and not enough detail for each one. I would have rather had just three basic types of stairs covered in detail than all of the types in here. The writer appeared to be showing off.

Still, it did show me what I needed to purchase (bending rail) and had about two pages worth of useful information. I finished my curved baluster, but I see flaws in my work. I am a pretty ambitious DIYer and I would not recommend that anyone try doing this but a professional. This book did not give enough detail or complete instructions to help me through the rough spots.

1 out of 5 stars do not buy this book!!.......2004-11-15

As an installer by trade, I urge anyone interested in learning the construction of stairs to consult another book. I wish I had read the other readers comments before I wasted my money on this book.

1 out of 5 stars At best, a poor collection of ill-connected articles........2004-09-29

I have a large amount of admiration for the Taunton Press. Fine Homebuilding is quality magazine and the For Pros books have been worth the money. This book is a poor collection of disjointed FH articles that have no cogent flow to them. I should know better than to buy books by "Editors," but I made a mistake here. William Spence's "Constructing Staircases, Balustrades & Landings," while not a perfect book, is much better than this collection.

Taunton's "For Pros" books on Electrical (Caldwell) and Plumbing (Hemp) are well worth the money, particularly Caldwell's offering.

5 out of 5 stars really really fun and helpful but..............2002-05-03

      ...

I have both of her books and they are both great, helpful etc..the life-lesson i learned is...if it doesn't work out..paint over it and start again. ...

3 out of 5 stars Great ideas, poor execution.......2002-04-02

The projects in this book are definitely cool. However, I encountered two substantial problems.

First, it was difficult to find some of the supplies. I live in a metropolitan area (2 million people) and could only find one place that sold liming wax. I spent an hour on the phone calling places looking for it. I finally found a supplier 40 miles away.

Second, the colors in the book are quite different than in person. I added the specified amount of artist's paint to create the terracota fresco. The color was suppose to be orangish. It turned out to be pink. Let me tell you, my husband did not appreciate that at all.

My recommendation, take her ideas, but don't use her colors.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value, makes a great housewarming gift.......2000-07-28

This is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to decorate or redecorate their home with style. It is great value because it is literally packed with techniques and ideas to suit anyone's taste. Most effects are surprisingly easy to create.

The book starts out with a through explanation of materials. This includes color photos of all the tools, as well as charts with great information on mixing and thinning paint types, primers, undercoats, solvents, glazes, varnishes, sealants, and metallic finishes. Information about toxicity, uses and whether it should be used indoors or out is included as well. There are even several excellent charts on preparing almost any surface for painting.

Numerous techniques for painting walls including colorwashing, sponging, dragging, rag rolling, stippling, limewashing, dry brushing, fade-away washing, loose-glaze, mock and rubbed back plaster are included. Effects such as Fresco, Mediterranean and Egyptian are also covered as well as creating borders, stone blocking and making distressed plaster patterns.

Then wood effects such as aging, spattering, graining, crackling, combing, and staining are covered. The Scandinavian and Shaker color pallets and styles are demonstrated here too. Stone finishes such as marbling, lapis lazuli, sandstone, porphyry, granite and terracotta follow. Then there are metal finishes including patina, verdigris, rust, lead, iron and bronzing. Finally, lacquer, tortoiseshell, shagreen, leather, stenciling, and gilding techniques are shown.

Most of the projects use latex or acrylic paint, only a few use oils. Step-by-step directions are given for each of these techniques or effects. Close-up photos show the each style in a few different colors and recipes are given for each one. Some styles have pictures of finished rooms or objects done with them.

Since printing accurate colors is tricky and there are so many variables in materials and surfaces, I know that results can vary. I would recommend experimenting on a small scale and tweaking the recipe to get things the color you want. All in all this is fabulous and inspirational book at an excellent price for anyone who wants to do more than brush on off-the-shelf paint.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at and inspiring!.......1999-05-31

I do decorative finishes quite often, and while I have not actually followed any of the paint recipes to the letter, they have provided a jumping-off point for many projects. A nice sourcebook w/ photos of different kinds of tools, pigments, etc. The use of UK measurements and paint terms could be confusing for some people. Overall a very good reference for the serious or semi-serious decorative painter...

3 out of 5 stars Lovely book, but where is my terra cotta stone wall?.......1999-05-20

I have been enchanted with this book since I first saw and acquired it a few years ago. I have followed only a few recipes, partly because it has been difficult to find some of the ingredients in my area. My most pressing complaint, however, echoes comments by an earlier reviewer regarding the accuracy of the recipes. I am in the middle of a faux stone block wall that calls for a base coat and three glaze coats, followed by veining and shadows--a lot of work. It was clear after the first glaze coat that my wall would never be remotely close to the lovely terra cotta color identified (p. 94) as "the basic recipe". Help, Liz, where are you?

      Book Description

How to Care for Old and Historic Wood and Plaster What are the best methods for removing stains from wood finishes? How can you determine the type of finish on your molding? How can you repair the cracks in your plaster cornice? You've been told you have "alligatored paint": what is it and what can you do about it? … Answers to these questions and hundreds more are found in this detailed guide to caring for and reviving old wood and plaster walls and moldings. Carefully shaped woodwork, delicate plaster molding and colorful painted finishes give unique character to the interiors of old buildings. Walls and Molding describes the history of these key features and clearly explains how to save and repair them. Written for homeowners and others responsible for the care of buildings from 50 to 250 years old, and based on the principles of preservation expressed in the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings, this authoritative handbook offers practical advice for all aspects of caring for old wood and plaster walls and molding. Detailed methods are included for diagnosing, cleaning, repairing and reconstructing wood panels and molding as well as patching and replastering walls — all stressing the three-pronged approach of the National Park Service: repair, replace and, only as a last resort, re-create. 4 out of 5 stars Old House Owner's Manual.......2000-05-02

If you own or work on old houses this book is a great reference. It explains how to research and repair the plaster and wood surfaces in your home. As a DIY old house renovator it was full of useful information, and gave me a lot of insight into the construction of my house. However, it is not always written in really easy to understand terminology, so it can be hard to follow.
