4 out of 5 stars Dragonlance without the sudden need for insulin.......2007-03-19

Dragonlance has always suffered from excessive cuteness and funny. The authors never really seemed able to render their story with the kind of dark and brooding ambiance that the story seemed to beg for.

This graphic novel gives people a chance to fall in love with the story as it was meant to be experienced. It's good, dark stuff, awesomely drawn and lovingly colored in the rich dark colors of well stained wood. It's lovely.

Being one who has never really much cared for Dragonlance, it means a lot for me to find a take on the story I can really get behind and enjoy. Congratulation to the creators, you've got a convert!

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Awesome!!!.......2007-02-15

In the comic book world it is mostly superpowered characters in tights fighting the forces of evil, but now DDP gives us a breath of fresh air with Dragonlance Chronicles being adapted to comic book form. I really felt attached to the characters, and found it hard to put down. If you like fantasy, you'll like this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great visuals.......2007-01-21

For the first time we get a glimpse of what the world of Draglance looks like visually. My big fantasy is that one day they make the Chronicles series into a movie series which could be successful considering how well LOTR did. As for this graphic novel, it is a good condensed version of the actual book. It lacks a little bit of the emotion of the book because of this but i still enjoyed it. I didn't really care for how Caramon and a few of the other characters looked since i had a different vision of them, but part of this is due to the artwork lacking consistency at points. At any rate, i look forward to the completion of Dragons of Winter Night!

4 out of 5 stars It's no substitute, but it is a worthy supplement.......2006-09-27

I share the opinion with many others that the Chronicles Trilogy is the defining fantasy event of the 1980's, and as such, I set about to read Devil's Due Publishing's new comic adaptation with more than a little anxiety. Does it live up to Weis and Hickman's original? Could it possibly?

Thankfully, as I sat down to read it I was able to convince myself that it couldn't possibly live up to the novel, simply due to format. A 192 page graphic novel cannot possibly contain the depth of the 400-some-odd page book. It is an impossibility. There simply isn't enough space for the trade to cover everything adequately. This realization led me to understand that I needed to approach the comic as something else entirely, as an alternate presentation of the same story rather than the exact same story. This should be your mindset as you sit down to read the comic adaptation, as the story will be enriched because of it.

Does it live up to Weis and Hickman's novel? In depth of character, no. In depth of story, no. But (I think) most importantly, does it live up to it in spirit? Absolutely.

I was thrilled to see that the spirit of the novels, the heart of the tale and the characters, remained intact. While neither the story or the characters contain the depth of the original, the adventure is still there, as is the wit, the camaraderie, and most importantly, the excitement. Chronicles was the fantasy event of the 80's, not because of stellar penmanship (although it was good), but because it is one of the most engaging reads in modern fantasy. Chronicles is a blast to experience, and so is this comic. It was fun to see all of my old favorites on the page together. I smiled as Flint dives into the water while running from the goblin horde outside Solace, I laughed when Fizban blasts their cage open with a fireball, was touched when Riverwind was brought into the temple a charred and dying mess, and was exhilarated with every word that escaped Raistlin's lips. The spirit of the tale can be felt on each and every page, and that's why it's worthy of your money.

As for the art, my only complaint is lack of consistency. Some panels look beautiful while others look rushed. I was simultaneously in awe of Raistlin's haggard appearance, and equally disgusted by the fact that he looked 100 years old in some frames. Admittedly, this actually makes a little sense considering his character, as the characters in the novels are at the same time in awe of and disgusted by him, but the inconsistencies can be said about the other characters as well. Don't get me wrong, more often than not they are painted beautifully, but there are times when certain characters look a little off. A small complaint, at best.

All in all, the adaptation is about as good as one could expect. Novel-to-comic transfers usually never work as well as one would like, but DDP did an admirable job with this, much better than their Dark Elf Trilogy. If you were a fan of Chronicles, I highly recommend this trade. It's a quick read, one that will have you turning the pages as quickly as you did with the novel. I don't think it's a worthy substitute for the books, but as a supplement, it's wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite series of all-time.......2006-07-11

I read the Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends as they came out many moons ago. Since then, I have reread them 3 or 4 times. Each time I read them I enjoy them more than the prior times. There is just something about them that makes you really understand and love the characters. I've never felt this attached to characters including the characters of The Fellowship of the Ring. While I do not think the writing is as good as Tolkien, it isn't as bad as some claim. I strongly recommend these books to any fantasy fan.

5 out of 5 stars A classic revisited.......2005-04-08

Golly, it must have been almost 20 years since I picked up a Dragon Lance book. Some of the short stories in this book were full of charters I remembered and others were truly original.
The Blood Sea Monster by Barbara and Scott Siegel in addition to Love and Ale by Nick O'Donohoe were a couple standouts.
I know this is a reprint so I wont spend the time looking up what some of the authors went on to do but I can only assume it was bigger and better things.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the genre.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Fantasy!.......2006-05-21

This fabulous fantasy, Temple of the Dragonslayer, by Tim Waggoner, is the first book in an eight part series. The story takes place in the mystical world of Krynn, a world filled with goblins, dragons, ogres, dwarfs, elves and wizards.

The story begins as a young girl, Nearra, wakes up in the forest surrounded by goblins who proceed to chase her deeper into the woods. With no memory of her past, Nearra tears blindly through the forest not knowing why they are chasing her or how she will survive. Alas, the adventure begins!

Along her quest to restore her memory, Nearra is joined by four newfound companions each with their own motivations for making the journey. The friends vow to help Nearra discover her past. But at what cost? The group faces dragons, ogres and goblins on their way to an ancient temple which Nearra hopes will reveal the answers she so desperately seeks. Is all what it seems? Could friends be enemies and enemies be friends?

When it comes to Temple of the Dragonslayer, this book is more than just something to be read, it is something to be experienced. You will need a good block of time to read it though, because once you start, you will not want to put it down! I enjoyed the twists, the turns and the all the action in between. I give this book five stars and think you will too!

4 out of 5 stars Recipe for Fantastic Adventure!.......2005-04-26

Nearra awakens in a forest to discover that she has lost her memories. In moments, she is attacked by goblins and then a green dragon, all intent on hurting her. She manages to escape with the help of others, and assembles a band of curious companions who wish to help her answer several questions, the most important of which is: will she ever get her memories back?

Add these ingredients: a great cast of characters, a sizeable helping of high adventure, an equal sized helping of fun, a smackeral of romance and a pinch of humor in the right places. What you get is this book, a fine example of quest fiction for most ages (10 and up, the back cover says).

4 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed it!.......2004-12-28

My husband and I have both read the original Weis & Hickman Dragonlance books, and so were curious about this new "young adult" series. We borrowed a copy of this first book to read, and were both pleasantly surprised! We definately enjoyed it, and now intend to add the set to our Dragonlance collection.

5 out of 5 stars A VERY BIASED REVIEW.......2005-07-05

Okay, so I read the first 7 books of this series SPECIFICALLY to get to the 8th one because Jeff Sampson is my best friend. So this review is rather biased, but I will try to be as fair as possible.

Continuing the story of the miscreants from Krynn, Dragon Spell reunites the original friends that are left and sends them on their journeys. Unlike some of the post-Asvoria books, I really think Jeff connects with the original INTENTS of the characters. Example: in some of the later books, Sindri reads like a child one scene, then an astute adult the next. In this book, all of the characters seem to have come to an understanding with themselves and their respective missions.

The battle scenes do not read like a textbook history describing what goes on (which is a tendancy in some fantasy novels), and the book reads at a very good pace which is appropriate for younger and older readers alike. Younger readers will not be too confused by what is happening and older readers will not be bored by what's going on.

Overall, I've been very impressed by this book and I think it's one of the best ones of the series. And I say that not as a friend, but as a reader.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-07-02

This book was amazing. I don't know who this Jeff Sampson is but if he continues writing as good as he did in this book, he might as well be the next JK Rowling. That's how good he is. IMO. This was the best one in the series. Good work!

4 out of 5 stars Chalk one up for the cowboys.......2004-11-21

Jeff Sampson is a cowboy.

It's good to see more cowboys getting out there.

Yeehaw, my friend. Yeehaw.

5 out of 5 stars The Magic of Krynn - Well worth the time!.......2003-08-15

After reading the previous reviews of this particularly intriguing collection of DragonLance tales I felt that it might be a waste of time to read through them. Having that thought in mind, I dove in anyway. Having now finished this first tales novel, which of course follows the theme of magic, I can definitely say that it was well worth the time to read. Granted, the leading story, a poem about Riverwind the Plainsman wasn't all that intriguing and a couple of the other stories weren't real page turners. Overall though, I would definitely recommend this book of tales to any DragonLance fan, especially for the final story, "Legacy" which serves quite well in furthering the grand DragonLance epic begun by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

DragonLance Tales Volume I

Riverwind and the Crystal Staff by Michael Williams ** - This is the story of Riverwind and his quest to find the staff that plays such and important role in "The Dragons of Autumn Twilight." Some may find a tale told in the form of a poem fascinating, unfortunately I'm not among them and I found myself trying to get through this as quickly as possible to get to the rest of the tales.

The Blood Sea Monster by Barbara and Scott Siegel **** - This is a fairly well written tale of a young and mischievous elf who steels away aboard a fisherman's boat, only to be found by the fisherman. Upon their fateful meeting, the young elf strikes a bargain with the old fisherman in the hopes of profit. After they've set off though, the old man has a terrifying surprise for the elf.

A Stone's Throw Away by Roger E. Moore ***** - I cannot give enough praise to the author for this wonderfully well written tale of Tasslehoff Burrfoot and his run in with a powerful wizard. It seems that one of those stories he kept telling everybody during "Chronicles" and "Legends" wasn't too tall a tale after all!

Dreams of Darkness, Dreams of Light by Warren B. Smith ***** - In this exceptionally well written tale, the author reintroduces us to Pig Faced William Sweetwater, the owner of the Pig and Whistle in Port Balifor which was the bar the Heroes of the Lance stayed in and earned the money to move on in their quest.

Love and Ale - by Nick O'Donohoe *** - This a story of Otik and a young Tika Waylan, running The Inn of the Last Home, well prior to the events in the "Chronicles" and the things that can go wrong when there is a Kender involved. While the premise of this tale is well thought out, the story dragged way too much and seemed to be bogged down in the details.

Wayward Children by Richard A. Knaak ***** - This is another of the stories in Tales Volume I that cannot receive enough praise as this exceptional author puts us, the readers, in the eyes of the enemy, the Draconians and their strange encounter with a village of elderly elves.

The Test of the Twins by Margaret Weis ***** - Co-DragonLance creator Margaret Weis does her usual high standard of work in this tale that gives us the back story of Par-Salian's decision to invite Raistlin to take the test and what happened when Caramon and Raistlin traveled to the Tower of High Sorcery in Wayreth.

Harvests by Nancy Varian Berberick ***** - Given the number of DragonLance novels written by this exceptional author, it's easy to see why she has written so many. This is a well constructed and thought out short story about a Tanis and Flint adventure that happened prior to the events of "Chronicles."

Finding the Faith by Mary Kirchoff ***** - This author has also been quite deservedly prolific in the DragonLance world and it's easy to see why with this extraordinarily well written tale. Although this tale should've been part of "Chronicles," I'd imagine Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman didn't include it to save time. "Finding the Faith" is the story of Laurana's quest to find the fabled Dragon Orb in Icewall, told from the viewpoint of Raggart Knug, High Cleric of the Ice People.

Legacy by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman ***** - What can one expect when these exceptional authors team up for a DragonLance story; nothing less than perfection, which is what is delivered in "Legacy." It is now twenty five years since the events of "Legends" and Caramon is summoned to the Tower of High Sorcery in Wayreth along with his three sons Tanin, Sturm and Palin. The leaders of the three different mage orders believe that Raistlin is still alive in the Abyss and planning on using Caramon's youngest son Palin to make a comeback from the Abyss... {ssintrepid}

2 out of 5 stars Uninteresting Tales about Nothing.......2003-07-25

The Tales I Volume 1 isn't really all its cracked up to be. There are short stories without enough time to develop plot, character backgrounds, and I found most of the supporting characters completely annoying. Reading this book brought me back to the days of Highschool when I was forced to read short stories out of a big 500 page textbook. I remember rejoycing to find a single good story out of the 300 stories in the book, and crying from boredom at the rest.

That is the best way I can describe the tales book. Try searching the web, maybe someone typed up the novella by Weis and Hickman. Its not that long. Is that one novella worth paying the few bucks? Not at all.

I have yet to read the other Tales books, but since I am about to run a DnD campaign based before the War of the Lance, I will most likely read Tales II Volume 3 (The War of the Lance) which is a series about the other, non-epic hero, stories from the time period as background. Unfortunately, I couldn't even get that out of this book. Save your money and purchase some of the Villians series (EXCELLENT) or Elven Nations Trilogy.

3 out of 5 stars Well...........2001-10-26

I have to give all the short story novels 3 stars. There are some stories you won't like but they'll 2-4 really great ones that will make the books worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better ones........2001-09-24

I found this book quite good. It is filled with a compilation of short stories written by come of the more well known Dragonlance authors. All of them are pretty good, like Palin's test, depicted on the cover. This is a must read for anyone into the dragonlance saga.
