This book gives positive reinforcement to those persons participating in the First Place weight loss program. I recommend ths book to anyone who might be considering participating in the Christian based program.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual warfare--coming to a refrigerator near you.......2007-02-02

Wow! This is an excellent study--the second I have done in this series. The first was okay, but this one addressed issues in my life and in the life of the rest of the group that we all needed to work on. Working through each day's section of the study only took half an hour, but it dealt in refreshing ways with the topic of spiritual warfare. The accompanying memory verses were very relevant. The first one kept me going throughout: "What I am asking you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach." This study is not so much about transforming your waist line as it is changing you from the inside (heart, attitude, thoughts) outward. Everyone in our group, without exception found these studies to be outstanding.

4 out of 5 stars good, but similar to other FP studies.......2006-03-09

So far, I'm enjoying the First Place program and the Bible Studies. This is our second study, and while it's easy and keeps me focused on my goal of keeping Christ first place in my life, the second study is not that different from the first. They aren't real deep studies, so they're perfect for someone who's just starting a new routine of daily Bible study. Others might want to get something deeper to use alongside the First Place studies. EVfEP is a great follow up to Giving Christ First Place.

5 out of 5 stars Everyday Victory for Everyday People.......2005-10-15

This is the second of the First Place Bible studies that I have done. I find it easy to use, not consuming too much time, but providing MUCH food for thought. I especially love the CD's that accompany the studies that help with scripture memorization.

5 out of 5 stars Another Victory in the First Place series!.......2005-03-29

They've done it again. The First Place bible studies continue to be my favorites. I love them because studies are easy to do, each lesson takes about 5 to 10 minutes each day. But they keep you thinking & learning all day long! Plus the Scripture Memory CD helps you learn 10 verses throughout the study. This one had a bit more hokey-sounding music, it was still good though. I highly recommend ordering this study & looking into joining an actual First Place group.

Book Description

Most managers coach employees by giving them feedback and evaluating their performance, right? Wrong. Coaching differs markedly from other managerial functions. With its wealth of tips, worksheets, and self-assessments, this handy guide shows managers how to use coaching—not only to strengthen direct reports’ skills but also to rev up their performance to unprecedented levels.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value, and extremely practical..........2006-12-16

Coaching employees is one of those things that is more easily said than done. And it's far too easy to mistake managing with coaching. I found Harvard Business School Press' Pocket Mentor series book Coaching People: Expert Solutions to Everyday Challenges an excellent concise guide for successfully coaching people with optimal results.

Contents: What Is Coaching? How to Know When to Coach; How to Develop Coaching Skills; How to Manage a Coaching Session; How to Customize Your Coaching; Tools for Coaching People; Test Yourself; To Learn More; Sources for Coaching People; Notes

In a mere 69 pages, the writers pack in more useful information than books three and four times the size. Everything is geared towards practicality and immediate application, so the book delivers value from the very first pages. The distinction between what is, and what isn't, coaching is a perfect beginning, and sets the stage for what follows. Coaching is not behavior correction or task assignment. It's a mutual sharing to help someone reach their goals and improve their effectiveness. The coach doesn't have to know all the answers, but they do need to be willing to listen, share, and work with the coachee to make changes and monitor the results. The book also contains a number of practical worksheets and checklists to gauge the effectiveness of both parties. This may take the form of a checklist to assess your listening skills, or an action plan to outline a plan and follow up on the outcomes.

For the price and size, there's no reason this shouldn't be included as part of someone's package of materials when they are promoted to a position of management. And even if you're not officially management, you may still be an informal leader in your sphere of influence. Working on your personal coaching skills will only help to solidify that role and enhance your effectiveness with others. If you've never given any thought to how you can help others achieve their goals, start here...

Book Description

This book reveals the hidden health dangers in many of the seemingly innocent products we encounter every day--a tube of glue in a kitchen drawer, a bottle of bleach in the laundry room, a rayon scarf on a closet shelf, a brass knob on the front door, a wood plank on an outdoor deck. A compelling exposé, written by a physician with extensive experience in public health and illustrated with disturbing case histories, How Everyday Products Make People Sick is a rich and meticulously documented account of injury and illness across different time periods, places, and technologies. It presents a picture not of one exceptional or corrupt industry but rather of how run-of-the-mill manufacturing processes and consumer marketing expose workers and the general public alike to toxic hazards. More troubling still, even when such hazards are recognized, calls for their control are routinely ignored. Written for a wide audience, it offers a critical and disquieting perspective on the relationship between industrial development and its adverse health consequences.
Among the surprisingly common hazards discussed in How Everyday Products Make People Sick:
Glue and rubber cement
Chlorine bleach
Rayon and other synthetic textiles
Welding and other metal fumes
Wood preservatives
Gasoline additives

5 out of 5 stars This is actually a brilliant History book, poorly marketed........2007-05-07

Some imbecile at the publishing company gave this book what they must have thought was a trendy title. By doing that, they missed the market for what turns out to be one of the most interesting history books I've read all year--and I read a lot of history.

What this book really is, is a history of how changes in industrial processes have had unintended health consequences. It also documents the political and social forces that have kept the health consequences of these various chemicals from being known and regulated.

All this sounds dry and dusty, but the author writes with a lively, well-documented, anecdote-rich style that modestly cloaks a depth of research far beyond what I've read in history books written by trained historians. It's a pleasure to read, and in the process of reading it you'll learn a great deal about the history of plastic manufacturing, how artificial textiles are made, the uses of industrial bleaching, and many dozens of other intriguing processes which make our world what it is.

What a pleasure to discover that there still are a few highly educated "renaissance" people in the world who can combine expertise in medicine, history, social thought and engineering to come up with such a delightful, well-written read.

If I had the power, I'd nominate this book for the National Book Award in History!

5 out of 5 stars An Exemplar for General Interest Texts in Occupational Toxicology.......2007-01-19

Given the recent proliferation of pulp-professional books reviewing environmental toxicology, Dr. Paul Blanc's immediate challenge in *How Everyday Products Make us Sick* is to set his work apart from its peers. To anyone who merely browses Blanc's book, it will quickly become apparent that he easily obviates this challenge.

And to anyone who studies his book in depth, it will become clear that Blanc has at once established himself as a member of that rare species called "polymath;" a species populated by the likes of Jared Diamond, Joseph Campbell, and James Burke.

Of all such authors, Blanc's style and scope most closely mirrors that of Burke, whose celebrated "Connections" series on BBC set a new standard for integrated, iconoclastic scholarship. While, as an occupational toxicologist, I am admittedly partial to Blanc's field of study, I am anything but partial to its existing body of literature. Before reading--and re-reading--Blanc's book, I had yet to encounter a model for conveying occupational toxicology to the general public both coherently and charmingly.

Yet Blanc's breakthough compendium is nothing if not both charming and coherent. It will undoubtedly captivate both professionals and non-professionals, although non-professionals will likely gain the most insight from this book. (Professionals, and/or perfectionists, will reap immeasurable reward from Blanc's immaculate footnotes; worthy of separate publication in their own right).

Like James Burke, Blanc inter-weaves science, history, and culture with such electrifying (and refreshingly irreverent) flair as to virtually prove Mark Twain's saw that nothing has been more detrimental to human knowledge than traditional, pulpous modes of education.

5 out of 5 stars Industrial Hazards.......2006-12-29

This book focuses on industrial hazards, with brief explanations, and reasonably complete histories, of the industrial processes insofar as the history and the knowledge of the process can inform knowledge of the hazard presented to workers and to product users. One key theme is how knowledge of many of today's industrial hazards has been with us for very long periods of time, but that--and I interject here my own view--given the emphasis on economic development concurent with the rise of industrial society--medical and regulatory efforts at controlling or reducing the risks of the hazards have been unsuccessful, due to the inconvenence or costs to the industries so associated. Without actually using the term "externalities," a propensity to assign those costs from industries to their employees, the environment, and to product-users is documented.

Another key theme is that the knowledge of the hazards and their tentatively arrived-at mitigation measures has ebbed and flowed, with populations thinking that effective controls have been implemented when in fact they have not been.

A further point of knowledge is that there is no clear dividing line between exposures in the workplace and exposures in the home. For this reason, and probably because the medical literature from which he is able to draw has dealt more with workplace hazards than with hazards in the home, the focus is on industry, though the writing moves from industry to the home when the hazards move there also. I would recommend the book to a popular audience for knowledge of industrial hazards in the home, but only if the reader is willing to learn the author's lessons regarding how the danger origininates in industry and moves from there to the home, and is willing to also learn the important lesson that the hazards to the workers who produce the products are significant factors in making product choices, as well as the actual toxic effect to the user. He quotes Jerry Garcia on the hellish aspects of vinyl record production. No special knowledge of chemistry is required to understand the text.

Unfortunately I do not have the book in front of me now, but from memory, here are a few of the topics covered:

- mercury fumes
- cotton dust
- carbon disulfide
- chlorine
- metal working fumes
- multiple causes of Parkinsonism

I do not mean to imply that the author appeared to me to be less than comprehensive in his addressing of toxic processes and products, although he did not deal extensively with military industries, nor with the current issue regarding the environmental distribution of uranium munitions. He touched on the shortcomings of the regulatory process under lassiz-faire capitalism, and sees the two most important upcoming issues, besides recovering from recent efforts at governmental deregulation and disassembling and hampering of regulatory agencies, as the toxic effects of additives to gasoline, and the toxic effects of wood preservation chemicals, both of which are throughly reviewed, noting the special dangers to children.

I enjoyed his end-noted documentantion of the most obscure points of his historical reviews, some of which were not even central to what he was saying. I felt he liked doing this sort of extensive research, was expert in his field, and that the writing was a labour of love.

Book Description

"A collection of chilling stories...eerily believable and truly spooky...very strongly recommended..."--Midwest Book Review

Most people think of ghosts as rare, elusive creatures that are more or less inaccessible to the average Joe. Sure, we read about them, watch TV shows about them and tell stories about them, but we'll probably never run into one--right? Don't be so sure. Even if you've never personally encountered a ghost, chances are you know someone who has.

The Ghost Next Door takes a revealing look into the lives of average, everyday people from across the country who have had experiences in the realm of the unexplained. Whether you're a true believer in ghosts or a hard-nosed skeptic, you're sure to get a chill or two when you read about the woman who was visited by her grandfather...on the night of his funeral! Or the man who was forced to move by a troublesome spirit...only to find it had followed him!

As you make your way through these and other genuinely spooky stories, you'll probably find that ghostly encounters are a lot more common than you had imagined. Could there be a "haunted house" in your town? Perhaps on your very street? Maybe even right next door?

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not as scary as you would think. .......2007-09-16

This book was a nice collection of short stories, but not as scary as you would think it would be. The reviews make is seem hard to put down. But it wasn't hard at all. There were one or two stories that were creepy. But as a whole, I was dissapointed. I didn't like the way that the author presented the stories either. It was confusing. He didn't introduce the person he got the story from well. His comments on each story, written in italics, and with too many ellipsis marks were overdone...
I don't need to have the author's voice try to scare me as I read. If it is a good story, it will do that naturally. I wouldn't label this book as a waste of money, because it goes on my shelf with the rest of my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Reading.......2007-04-18

This is one of the better books I have read on the subject of Ghosts! It is kinda creepy, and facinating and will keep you interested till the last page.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, but it IS creepy!.......2006-06-20

I have to say that I really enjoyed this title. A bit short, yes, but quality writing. And for me, it's more about quality than quantity. I'd rather have a concise book that is interesting and well-written than a Bible-sized book that's stuffed with poor writing and dry information stripped from some internet site.

One reviewer states that the "creepiness factor" of this book pales in comparison to books by King or Straub. Obviously, somebody needs to point out to that reviewer that King and Straub write FICTION. This book is about REAL occurrences. And, actually, I found parts of this book to be QUITE creepy, especially given that these things actually happened.

The Ghost Next Door is recommended reading by yours truly.

3 out of 5 stars Average but entertaining.......2006-04-28

No one need worry about reading this book alone in the middle of a stormy night. This is an average but entertaining book, and nothing much beyond a "creepy feeling" occurs in it. Unlike the macabre stories of a King or a Staub where a bump in the night is sure to leave you hiding under the bedcovers or calling your best friend for the reassuring sound of a familiar voice, this book is a collection of the strange events that most of us have had in the course of our lives. There is probably no one who hasn't had some sort of run-in with the unexplainable, something that reminds one of the familiar tales told around the camp fire on family outings or scout jamborees. Most of them are of strange sounds at unusual times of day, doors that open when they shouldn't be able to, or lights that go on or off without the assistance of a human hand. It is primarily this simple type of story that rings as true and strikes a familiar tone. An interesting book and one that will reassure the reader that they aren't "the only one" to have such experiences.

As for the why of this phenomenon, read Beyond Coincidence by Martin Plimmer).

3 out of 5 stars Great easy read whether you believe or not........2006-02-25

I am pretty agnostic as to the existence of ghosts, but I enjoy reading people's accounts of encounters. This book is a very easy read. It is no literary masterpiece--it reads more like an unedited diary of other people's oral histories--but it is entertaining. I like to read one or two of the stories at a time as a nice, brief break.

Book Description

In this erudite and gracefully written ethnography, Mariane Ferme explores the links between a violent historical and political legacy, and the production of secrecy in everyday material culture. The focus is on Mende-speaking southeastern Sierra Leone and the surrounding region. Since 1990, this area has been ravaged by a civil war that produced population displacements and regional instability. The Underneath of Things documents the rural impact of the progressive collapse of the Sierra Leonean state in the past several decades, and seeks to understand how an even earlier history is reinscribed in the present.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Academic indeed.............2003-12-28

Honestly, I couldn't make heads or tails of this book - and I am an entirely over-educated offspring of academics, a native speaker of English, and a voracious reader. I just didn't understand the words! I purchased this book before moving to Sierra Leone to manage an aid program, hoping to gain insight into the people I would be living and working with. This book, however, was more about anthropological theory than the Mende people; it served to illustrate academic points rather than the cultural world they inhabit. Entire chapters were devoted to such esoterica as the meaning of "twins" and the supreme symbolic significance of placement of hammocks vs. stools within the household. Meanwhile, the prose is peppered with endless usage of such words as "homologous" and "hermeutic" along with liberal sprinklings of Mende words - which are defined the first time they are used, but as there is no glossary to subsequently refer to by the end of the book the reader is lost in linguistic gobbledy-gook.

I am sure that this book has contributed to academic inquiry -- but from my perspective, I have never read an entire book about a people and place and learned so little about them.

Mark Joyner and his colleagues would never stand a chance at working for a premier marketing agency. I mean premier as in Fifth Avenue or those that handle the accounts of fortune 100 companies. Any executive at a top tier corporation would loose his job for accepting this `gurus' advice.

Now why does his book have so many positive reviews? Why is Mark Joyner a millionaire?(?) Respectively Mark Joyner knows something about marketing and the psychology of influence. But then isn't this true with any charlatan? Some people see glamour working on the fringes of society as hustlers. I find respect and dignity to be a much stronger capital than a hustled buck. So yes, using advice from this book will make you `possibly' give you influence but following these characters will cost you `power' in the end.

So what do I mean by `these' guy's? I've identified about a dozen `gurus' that preach the secrets of brainwashing or hypnotic marketing that rely on each other. You can find their reviews on this book somewhere in here, and they'll mention their own book. I have accidentally purchased a couple of these books.

This book along with those written by the other guru's have one thing in common. They regurgitate information from a respectable source. In this case the regurgitation
Is fourth class and perverse. I believe seventy five percent of it comes from a single source and the other twenty five percent is therefore completely meaningless. I say this because (Mr.) Joyner relies on the principals of a single scholar in the field of social psychology specifically exploring the principals of persuasion. There are so many more principals and cutting edge studies out there that Mr. Joyner's singular `academic' resource demonstrates how questionable of a expert he is.

Now to his credit he has applied these principals to his own success and shares them. What is effectively going on is the Internets version of a super hyped INFOMERCIAL. If you're a respectable business owner and you take the advice of Mr. Joyner and his inner circle you'll loose the respect of your clients eventually and then your personal dignity. If you do as Mr. Joyner has done, you may read the influence theories in a textbook on social psychology and simplify it, perverse it, then regurgitate it into a poor and incomplete marketing strategy and sell it at three hundred times it's worth in hype. You'll indorse Mark Joyner, he'll endorse you in return. You'll apply what you learn and get some poor needy people to (commit) to your insights, effectively forming a psuado business cult. As much as a genius you think you may be your not going to crack Wall Street and forget pulling the strings at capital hill because you'll have no power `hustler'.

I buy a lot of Marketing, business, and `academic' books on influence. It is inevitable that I buy a bad apple here and there. Mark Joyner has reduced himself beyond any `Gentleman' to sell you on his AUTHORITY as a former officer of this country.

3 out of 5 stars Not real impressed.......2007-02-08

With all the hype I was really looking forward to this book. If your looking for a general overview of list building, it's worth a look. If you want detail and how-to, you won't find as much here. I was really interested in co-registration, but the chapter contained one paragraph about the subject, and told you to try out his service. The rest of that chapter talked about list size and quality. What happened to information about co-reg? Guess I have to pay more to get it.

For the price I can't complain, I did learn a couple things, though there were no "wow" ideas. Much of the book I've already learned on article sites. I dont mind being pitched in a book, as long as the book is useful, but it seemed the book is pretty much a pitch for other higher priced products. Guess that's marketing nowdays.

I'm sure glen knows his stuff, he's had some big success, just wish he would have shared more in the book.

1 out of 5 stars Never received.......2006-11-03

I ordered this book and it didn't come, and I said ok send it to me later, adn then it didn't come and I said ok send it later and again and again after four extensions I gave up. This may be a great book or not, but it is not avaiable. I would have liked to have had a cahnce to read it. Disappointed in the service.

5 out of 5 stars Need a Large List? This is how to do it.......2006-09-10

Glen Hopkins has produced the quintessential work on how to create a list and what to do with it. I was amazed how valuable the information is.

Even if you think you know everything about building a list, Glen has some insider secrets to share that can open your eyes.

It's a small book and you can read it in an evening, but the contents are very powerful. He talks about viral maketing, co-registration, and turning that list into cash anytime you want.

Great job Glen. This should be in everyone's library. I know I've got mine on the desk as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars A useful spiritual guidebook for today's seekers........2000-04-11

Peg Thompson has given us a real gem: a book to use, not just to read. She avoids sentimentality and sectarianism, choosing instead to help the reader peel away his or her own layers of hurt, fear, pain, futility, and anguish in seeking a uniquely personal spiritual life. Her journaling exercises and questions are keen and helpful. Her "Passageways" in each chapter are drawn from many different meditation sources. The book draws on the varied experiences of a diverse group of people, showing that spirituality is truly multi-layered, multi-colored. This is a book for those of us who need a way to live spiritually but often feel frustrated and pained by our "efforts" or uncertain about how to go about it. No judgements are made nor are any doctrines taught within its pages, and Thompson even shares with us her own frustrations, joys, triumphs, and setbacks in living spiritually. Read it, use it, grow with it.
