I am extremely disappointed in amazon and this book. You guys delivered it over a month late.I'm not paying for amazon prime so I can receive much needed books over a month late. I had to go to my College bookstore and pay $120. You wanna know the worst part? They don't accept devolutions. So I'm extremely disappointed.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to better themselves in the region of art history knowledge and the ability to evaluate art's content as well. It was well worth buying and compliments any classes orientated towards the subject...maybe would even overshadow the required text.

Very interesting pictures.......2006-12-07

I purchased this book for my Art History class. Very interesting pictures along with non-boring texts. I really like the accompanied CD as it has all pictures from this text as well as other version of Gardner's art history books. Pictures are crystal clear. Although I finished that class long ago in 2002 and sold the book for school's book store with attractive price, I still have a copy of that CD and often reviewed whenever I saw some interesting stories of art history (such as female goddess from Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code). All pictures are under flash cards section. Besides a good text book, it should be kept as a reference.

My prime choice for Step 1.......2007-08-23

This is a great Step 1 review book. I used others as well, but after taking the exam, I can say that this was the most useful review book. I have Goljan Pathology as well, but this BRS is much more essential, and doesn't contain all the details needed for Step 2, so it is a good quick read with good practice quizzes and pretty much all the essential info you need, and you don't feel just overwhelmed after reading each chapter. It would've been nice if the authors added color illustrations to the text, and some figures in the quizzes were unclear. But overall buying this book was the best textbook investment I've made so far.

Alright, fine, I admit it --- I'm one of the med students who didn't like Goljan's Rapid Review Pathology book. After all, how can a 700-page book be considered a "rapid review"? This book is an excellent alternative! For Step 1, I used BRS Pathology exclusively. At a slender 400 pages, I was able to cover the entire book in-depth in a week, and it was just the right amount of information for the boards. The combination of BRS Path, First Aid, and doing practice questions is plenty for the pathology questions on the boards. I got my score report back last month and did very well --- and pathology was my strongest section. Good luck, and happy studying!

You must learn this book.......2007-08-02

I'm not sure what this other reviewer who claims the book is missing important details is talking about, because most of the stuff he mentions as left out of BRS Pathology, I am certain I learned from this book. This is the best book I ever read in medical school. It probably has a little bit too much detail for Step 1 (I took it in 2001), but damn, nearly everything in the book is fair game for the exam. True, there are some entries that leave you wondering, "how will I ever apply this esoteric fact or get asked a question on it?" But trust me, it is the highest yield book in all of medical school. Read this, and First Aid, and you will be set for about 70% of all questions on Step 1. If it wasn't for these two books, I would not be finishing up my radiology residency right now.

Bottomline: Buy it. Read it. Memorize it.

This seems like a good book but it is missing a lot of essential information. I think it should be complemented by test taking.

Good math review book.......2006-11-06

I am a math tutor who has used this book to help several kids study for the SAT. It is a good review of the material covered on the SAT. It has a full section explaining each type of question followed by plenty of practice problems ranging from easy to very difficult. I have not found many mistakes in the book. There are answers and explanations for all the problems in the book making it easy for students to self teach. There are also practice tests which I feel are a great deal harder than the actual SAT. The Appendix to the book is an excellent math review listing all the math concepts needed very consisely allowing a quick review the night before the test.

One of two great resources for improving your SAT Math Score.......2006-11-02

I'm an SAT tutor that actually takes the SAT three times a year. This is a great book and I wish all my students had the discipline to use it. The complaint from the other SAT tutor is not relevant to the objective of raising your score (which if you are scoring in the 500's can easily go up 100 points if you use this book in conjunction with the eight practice tests in the College Board Official Study Guide). This book remediates your math skill weaknesses which is the first step in preparing for the SAT math section. Once completed, (just the sections you are weak or rusty in)then dive into the eight practice tests in the College Board book which combine math reasoning with math skill. My other favorite resource for my students is Acing the New SAT I Math by Greenhall Publishing---an excellent resource to use by itself or in combination with Barron's. It's actually more comprehensive than Barron's and ideal for the student that is looking for a challenge and a score over 650. I would do the Barron's book first and then the Acting the New SAT I Math for each math section. Have fun!

As a peer studying for the SAT i recommend this book to those that have reviewed the official SAT workbook, kaplan, and also princeton review. this book show problems that are extremely difficult compared to the regular test but it is a good book to review if your planning to score at the 2100-2400 range.

I've taken my SATs May of 2003, and October 2003. I scored 740 for May SAT and achieved 780 for October SAT. This book is one of the best books for mathematics. It depends on how well you use this book. Anyways, I'll tell how i used this book.

First week: I bought the book, went over the concepts, structures, tricks, strategies, one of 10 REAL SATs practice exam to know what score i would rank, read through beginning stuff.

Second week: Starting this week, I work on chapter 3, which deals with arithmetic skills and concepts. There are 8 lessons in chapter 3. I did 2 lessons a day starting Monday, and then Friday, I relax and review the lessons I've practiced. When you study, you must MASTER the concepts. Knowing the concept does not help.

Third week: There are 7 lessons in Chapter 4 which deals with Algebra. I do two lessons a day, for 4th day, when I only do 1 lesson, I work on my weaknesses in Chapter 4. Then 5th day, I review and study. When review, review lessons from previous chapters so that you won't forget.

Fourth week: There are 5 lessons in Chapter 5. I work 2 lessons a day, and then I review and study as usual.

Fifth week: Chapter 6 deals with Geometry, which was one of my weaknesses. So I decided to learn 1 lesson a day since there are 8 lessons and SAT strongly emphasizes a lot on geometry. So fifth week, I've done 4 lessons, one lesson each day. 5th day, I reviewed.

Sixth week: I've continued and finish last 4 lessons and reviewed as well

Seventh week: I went back to my routine plan and studied two lessons a day, and then reviewed.

Eighth week: I worked on Chapter 8, last chapter before practice exams. 5 lessons, study.

9th week: Then after I've studied these chapters, I go over and review all the problems, questions, concepts from previous chapters. I review chapters 3-5.

10th week: Same as 9th week but I reviewed chapters 6-8.

11th and 12th week. I took practice exams to familiar myself with the exams. After you see the score you've got, go to problems and check to see if you made a mistake because you weren't careful enough. Then assume that it's correct and check your score again. For instance, You got 630 on practice exam but if you didn't make stupid mistakes, what could you have gotten?, 650? 700?

From this point, you're pretty much set for SAT Math. Note that I'm one of the biggest slacker with horrible English skills who's from Korea and still get high score. I am NOT a genius or some nerd. I received grades of Bs and Cs in mathematic courses in past and if I can pull this off, you can. This is a 3 month plan I've made beginning of junior year.

My parents told me that cramming does not work and that I should space out studying to learn more effectively. I am a fan of Bruce Lee and he has stated long time ago that "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." This means that you shouldn't assume you know the concept just because you've solved few easy problems. You should apply the concept as many times as you can and do them properly.

People say "practice makes perfect". It does not. PERFECT practice ALMOST makes perfect. You'll never get your goals to be perfect if you don't practice it properly and people make mistakes once in a while, so nobody is perfect.

In Psychology, It shows that spaced practice and overlearning helps for studies because overlearning and spaced practice puts your learning to long-term memory where it wont' decay for a long time.

When I say review and stdy everytime, it means, know the concept really well and master them by applying them as much as possible to every problems. When i say two lessons, it means, solve every problems in those lessons. I've also used Kaplan Math Workbook for practice problems to strengthen my concepts. I've studied previous chapters When I was studying chapters 4/5/6/7/8 to prevent my brain from forgetting.

I used this method to tutor students also as well. It worked for my studnets. I've raised most students' scores. My best student raised his score from 580 to 720, then he quit learning from me after 3 months, learned on his own from knowing this method for 2 months, and achieved 800. Student getting higher than a teacher? If I can do this, anyone can.

Good information, poorly organized.......2007-10-04

An account of the Russian Mafiya is an daunting task that requires a great deal of research. While I have no doubt that many of the statements in this book are true, the book suffers from a terrible lack of organization. It seems as though Friedman decided to write this book in a stream-of-conscious format. The format problem is damaging to the credibility of the book because it can confuse readers.

The evolution of the Russian Mafiya, which is located at the conclusion of chapter 5, should really open the book. Instead, Friedman jumps right into a prison interview with little primer before the important text. The main thesis alleges that the KGB stashed much of the money after the fall in the Soviet Union in as many places as possible. Among these places was organized crime, which has been diversifying since the 1970's. The problem was exacerbated when the Soviet Union fell. And because many of these Russian are Jewish, they seek asylum in Israel.

One of the move informative chapters discusses the extortion practices that mafiya associates exhibited with Russian NHL player. The media seems woefully unaware of any problem. This chapter is toward the middle of the book, sandwiched between prison interviews, illegal schemes, and biographies of members. The format left me with little frame of reference or time line regarding this developing problem. The book could benefit from a return to an editor.

Contrary to some of the comments mentioned by those giving this book low marks; this book is extremely accurate and in NO WAY anti semitic. Some stated that this book was anti semitic because it did not talk about the good side of the Russian-Jew Imagre. NEWS FLASH!!! This book is about the Russian Mob! The book is about BAD GUYS! Who says the author has to talk about the honest and good Russian-Jew imagre?? Secondly those who said the content was embellished or un-believable obviously do not have any knowledge on the subject of the Russian Mafia. Myself being involved in law enforcement at the state and federal level for 23 years, I can attest that nothing is sensationalized in this book. As for the person who claimed to have been written about in the book.. GIVE ME A BREAK!

Bottom line: this is not what you'd expect - 90's Russian mafia in the West stories. I was duped into... by the title 7 years ago... and pissed of by the good reviews which I saw now.

The great robbing of Russia and the spill-overs into the world have nothing to do with the hoodlum stories of this book.

Publishers do that: once a topic gets media attention... publish anything related.

This is quite shocking of how the mafia is able to buy off members of both major political parties in the U.S. along with other Western nations such as Israel. I would also recommend reading Double Cross about Sam and Chuck Giancana the two mafia bosses whom had the Kennedys in their pockets.

A real eye-opener. Friedman writes about some pretty ruthless, cruel people. I don't know how the author could have possibly obtained all the information that he did; he is a brave man. I hope he's still alive, and will be amazed if he is, given the nature of the people about whom he has written. Friedman describes Russian Mafiya types operating in Toronto, near to where I live -- very unnerving. Mind you, if you live in NYC, Miami, Denver, San Francisco or Los Angeles, you are not alone...

Many good reviews have already been written so I am going to keep this short and sweet. If you want to read a good, in-depth look at the social and political history and ultimate causes of the Civil War, this is an excellent place to start. Freehling covers just about every conceivable topic in the years 1776-1854 that caused friction between the North and South, but also touches on many social and political topics that are sometimes overlooked. He also writes some great mini-biographies of the many differing players and you will walk away with an excellent working knowledge of many topics, such as Thomas Jefferson and his thoughts on slavery, the Missouri Compromise, Virginia's slavery debate of 1832, the Wilmot Proviso, Texas' Annexation, and much more.

The only potential negatives are that Freehling's writing style does take getting used to and the book is massive. For quick readers, not a big deal. For slower readers like me, plan on investing time in this book.

In the end, I would highly suggest this for any people looking to bone up on antebellum U.S. history and/or causes of the Civil War.

A Plow Through.......2007-07-05

I debated giving this one 3 stars but the information in it is very good. A thurough evaluation of the subject. If you want a detailed history, this is it.

On the downside, it is a dense read. It took me a while to plow through the entire book. Part of this is the density of info but much is due to writting style. I also found it to be a bit redundant in parts, particularly early on (especially Part II, which you might want to just skip). Another reviewer stated it helps to know the background prior to opening this tome and I agree.

For a much easier intro to the topic, try: "The Approaching Fury: Voices of the Storm, 1820-1861 (Voices of the Storm)" by Stephen B. Oates.

Beginning a Journey in American History.......2007-06-09

Visiting a bookshop in 1990 I faced a choice of two books to purchase: America in 1857 by Kenneth Stampp and The Road to Disunion Vol. I by Wm. Freehling. Having read Freehling's book on the nulification crisis, I very fortunately chose The Road to Disunion. One of the most important revelations in this book is the tracing of the secesson movement's seeds to the forming of the United States. To any one acquainted with Freehling's writing will not be surprised by the depth of his research and thought provoking text. His views are always overviews that narrow their scope to individual incidents.

I spent seveteen years badgering the author for the second volume of this work. Readers now who have not yet read this book are more fortunate because they have the benefit of seeing the complete work at once. This is a volume well worth reading on its own, but it is a much better read when followed by volume two.

Bill Freehling is without doubt the dean of 19th century American history, a great human being with an appreciation of human feeling and a strict code of research taking the author wherever it will. There are no preconcieved notions of how history should be percieved.

Fear and Loathing in the Antebellum South.......2007-02-08

After a long time, in which a combination of increased workload and diversified reading interests have kept me away, it is good to be back to the world of antebellum 19th century America. Meeting Thomas Jefferson, John C. Calhoun, Andrew Jackson and a dozen secondary characters feels a little like coming home. But as the saying goes, you can dip into the same river twice. William W. Freehling's antebellum South is both familiar and foreign. Freehling brings forward a provocative thesis, which throws a bright light on some elements of the period, but also blinds you to some vital aspects.

I have previously read Freehling's brilliant essay collection, The Reintegration of American History: Slavery and the Civil War. That was one of the best books about 19th century America I've ever read. Using cultural history, comparative studies, biography, and even autobiography, Freehling brought a provocative new thesis to the field of 19th century antebellum South.

According to Freehling, the South was torn between two conflicting, contradictory ideologies - Aristocratic Paternalism, the 18th century view that the enlightened rich should govern all others, black and white and female, and Jacksonian 'Herrenvolk Democracy' - the view that America is the republic of the free white male, where the color line separates the master race - the Herrenvolk - from the inferior black folk.

The idea that the clash between these two ideologies, and indeed, the fractions between the various, and very different, elements of the South, is Freehling's key argument. And it illuminates many things:

The clash between Paternalists and Herrenvolk Democrats was most evident during the struggles for control of the legislations of Southern states, particularly Virginia. There, the lines were drawn most sharply between aristocratic slaveholders and slaveless white folks.

Freehling's high concept is also a part of the explanation for episodes such as the Texas annexation and particularly the gag rule. Slavocrats insisted that antislavery petitions to the United States Congress would not only be ignored, but actively rejected, thus 'gagging' opposition to Slavery and making a mockery of the democratic process. The gag rule was designed and led by South Carolina extremists, the most radical faction of the aristocrats.

But the explanation works less well when describing the major sectional conflicts - as one approaches the 1850s, Paternalists and Democrats all but disappear, and the struggle becomes one between Free and Slave states, with the Upper South and the Lower North trapped between them. This is a familiar story, and while Freehling tells it well, he does not really add much to the description.

A major point that is scored is Freehling's description of Slavery's malcontents. There really was, particularly in Texas and in Kentucky, an antislavery undercurrent, and Freehling does a superb job of describing its protagonists and enemies. As long as the North left the South alone, Southern Slaveholders could probably squash such movements, but their existence helps explain Southern fear of the rise of the Republican party - a strong Northern ally that could help Southern fifth columnist destroy the Peculiar institution from within.

But for the most part, Freehling's book fails to meet expectations. The title is more than a little Misleading - The Road to Disunion does not really show a path that led to the irreconcilable conflict. Unlike the events of 1848-1860, when each event called for its successor - the Compromise of 1850 led to the destruction of the Whig party in the lower south, which led to the radicalization of the Southern Democratic Party, and to the Kansas-Nebraska act and so on, the earlier incidents were fairly disjoint. The Virginia Slavery debate, the Nullification crises, the Gag rule - all ended without any real increase in animosity. Nor do we see "secessionists at Bay" - with marginal exceptions, until the late 1840s, few major Southerners were bona fide disunionists. Rather, like John C. Calhoun, they wanted to weaken the Union in order to save it.

For all of its sophistication and scale, Freehling's account feels incomplete. Mainly, I think, because until the middle 1840s, the themes Freehling invokes (sectionalism, slavery, colonialism) were relatively minor elements of political scene, where the major issues were banks, Indian genocide, internal improvements and the fans and enemies of `King Andrew` Jackson.

Ultimately, I think the road to disunion was not paved by Southern extremists. Southerners tried mainly to preserve their way of life against a world that was rapidly changing - Industrial rather then Agricultural, increasingly National rather than Local, and yes, Democratic rather than aristocratic. For all their belligerency, the Slavepower was essentially passive and fearful, lashing out in desperation against a new, modern world where there was place neither for slaves nor for masters.

The social roots of politics.......2005-10-08

With a sharp eye and witty word for the setting, William Freehling delivers a sprawling and most satisfactory account of the antebellum South's queasy lurches towards secession. Contrary to the strained obfuscation of many histories bearing on the Civil War's causes, Freehling effortlessly restores slavery, and the social, cultural and political dilemmas it spawned, to the center of the story where it belongs. The second chapter is pure genius: the disjointed, patchwork nature of the antebellum South is vividly illustrated with an imagined overland journey from New Orleans to Charleston in the 1850s. Freehling describes the frustrating alternative routes one might have wished to take, the constant and comically inconvenient switches between independent railroads with incompatible gauges and timetables, their respective stations often miles apart. With an accomplished historian's power to simultaneously portray minute details and grand themes, the author sinks us into the setting--its pace, its weather, its sights and sounds. Gripped by this elegant evocation, we are then drawn into the book's purpose: an exploration of the uneasy social dynamics of different regions in the Old South, and how they bent and twisted its resulting ideologies and politics. How these, in turn, redounded upon each other and shaped the confrontations and compromises at the national level becomes the sturdy spine of the story, and Freehling never loses his keen appreciation for the place, people and material culture of the period.

Many here have disparaged his writing style, and I understand what they are saying. For instance, try and decode the sentence that begins Chapter 21: "The first plotter Ashbel Smith inflamed Abel P. Upshur by naming was no famous London schemer." Without having read the last sentence of Chapter 20, it seems to defy grammar. Time after time I found that certain sentences made sense only by repeating them with different stresses laid on different words. But after awhile, I found there was a sort of breezy conversational logic to it, and it occurred to me that if Freehling were reading his book aloud we would have no problem with his usage. But, of course, that is no way to write effectively, and I have taken a star off for an otherwise flawless slab of rich historiography.

This is an excellent resource for your needs in Internal Medicine rotation. It delivers pertinent and well organized information. It also provides "pearls" relating to each subject area that bring the information down to practical application. It should not be your only source but definitely will complement the others.

Well, I have to say errors. I dont know who fact checked this book but I hope it wasn't a doctor. How many errors can one book have? I am only half way through and I have found at least 10. These are not small spelling or grammer errors. They are errors that could get someone killed. How about coagulation factors all being increased in DIC? or TIBC being decreased in iron def. anemia? The book should be returned to the publisher. My words of advice, read something else if you want to learn something correctly.

decent outline - many factual mistakes.......2006-12-13

This book follows the standard first aid format, serving as a decent outline of the material you'll need to know for the medicine clerkship and shelf. It's a great review tool if you already have a grasp of the material. However, it completely skims over underlying concepts focusing on teaching buzzwords and quick associations, so not a great text to use as your primary teaching tool if you want to learn the material in any greater depth than cramming.

Additionally, the second edition has a lot of errors, both typos and factual. Some winners include stating that Plasmodium ovale is the cause of Tinea Versicolor (it causes maleria), and telling you to use cefixime for Pseudomonas coverage (use ceftazidime or a 4th generation cephalosporin)

This book can only be described in the format of the writing. The interviewer gets annoying due to his unnecessary struggle with the universe of philosophical and existential crisis. However; the words of Maharaj exhibit a sort of brilliance, a sort of light, that CANNOT be put into terms of a book-review. Buy this book not to read every sentence from start to finish, but to expose yourself directly (on any page) to the light of the mind of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

A well done summary of Sri N.M.'s advice to seekers. It doesn't take long to catch the simple principles that lead to greater insights into the divine self. While the documented dialog does get repetitive after a point it still compels the reader to further introspection and engagement. Highly recommended for the serious seeker.

My favorite book in the world. I've read it 4 times and I imagine I'll read it another 10 times! It was recommended by a friend, and it was his favorite book, too. He had read it 3 or 4 times when he loaned it to me very reluctantly. So I definitely had to purchase my own copy.

THE MOST LUCID BOOK ON THE SUBJECT--GET IT!!!.......2007-07-14

I had come across this book many times over the years, and had thought that Nisargaadatta looked like a "wild-eyed crazy person." This scared me away from reading his book, until about a year ago. I had been completely wrong about him, and judged him only by his looks. I had also thought that the black and yellow cover of the book was so bold and intense that it seemed really "fringe," but I was also wrong about that. My mistake! I judged a book by its cover, thinking that Nisargadatta was out to convert people into a cult, or something like that. That's a bunch of NONSENSE. It's bold and intense because the publishers know that the book is dead-on about the truth and are not afraid to announce it, not because Nisargadatta is trying to blind you with a bunch of pseudo-spiritual crap.

So, one day I became curious about the book, and read some sections on Amazon. I was amazed at the quality of the communication! No riddles, no bullsh-t, no vague leading-on of the reader, no mindgames. It was as clear as a pure diamond, and incredibly INTERESTING.

I am so glad that I finally got over my prejudices and read this book. Before and after I read this book, I'd read works by Ramana Maharshi, Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, Sailor Bob Adamson, John Wheeler, Leo Hartong, and many others, but this one is THE MOST LUCID BOOK ON THE SUBJECT, period.

Unlike some Advaitan authors, like Gangaji, for example, Nisargadatta DOES NOT PLAY "HIDE THE BALL" with you. Gangaji hides the ball behind opaque, riddle-like nonsense and she makes money off of it, too. I've seen Gangaji speak in person, on videos, heard her on audio, and read some of her writings, and while many like her, I think that she's leading people down a path of needless confusion and makes people worse-off by leading them astray through a maze of irrelevancies and BABBLE. Clearly thinking herself ABOVE the masses--although she claims to be an Advaitin, which is purely contradictory!--she'll just look her stage guests in the eye and start in on her "knowing" laughter, or smile at them silently. Whatever. There's no mojo flowing from her during her "Satsang," just a bunch of devotees plopping down $20 to hear her prattle on in circles as she leads them into a paralyzing maze of verbiage. It's totally annoying. Her delivery is so baffling and time-wasting that few people in the audience even knew what the hell she was getting at. I felt like standing up and shouting: "Look, people, what she's trying to say is that YOU ARE GOD, DUH!!!" She's completely cryptic and self-obsessed, and of course being obsessed with your own ego is the OPPOSITE of Advaita.

Many "teachers," like her, mean well. Yes. But if they can't communicate, they should go home and leave people alone before they do any more damage. They may have understanding inside of them, but if they can't inspire understanding in others, they have NO BUSINESS acting like they're "teachers."

Nisargadatta, on the other hand, doesn't f-ck around with his audience in order to make himself seem larger than life, or in order to make a buck. He was poor his whole life, but still communicated the message with vastly more clarity and directness than any white-robe-clad goon with a fat bank account and a penchant for acting like The Riddler.

Even writers like John Wheeler just repeat their vague assertions thousands of times in a row with no new content delivered. Nisargadatta, on the other hand, has an astounding knack for communicating LUCIDLY with the reader. His questioners aren't "nice and polite" like Gangaji's are. No, they ask him tough questions and sometimes argue with him, and he answers their questions dead-on. They don't worship him and treat every word he says like it's true, even if they don't understand it. No, they challenge him, and the reader is better off for it.

He's down-to-earth, he's incredibly insightful, and the book will change your life!

I also heartily recommend Leo Hartong and Ramana Maharshi...

Get this book!.......2007-07-08

Putting it plain and simple, the spiritual search was almost a hobby. I read Buddhism and other "Eastern" philosophical and religious texts for many, many years. I never really understood. Reading this book changed everything.

This book sparked a small flame that ended up engulfing the person I took myself to be. The raging inferno consumed the mind, thoughts, concepts, everything I believed, everything I left unexamined... it left the "ME" in ashes...

As Stephen Wolinsky puts it, Nisargadatta's words are like a virus... once you are infected it spreads and leaves no trace of the life story you once held so dear.

This book is a living expression of your True Self, the true Guru - if you only get one book, this is the one. But in reality, you don't need any books to discover what you really are. Nisargadatta said that Spirituality was as discardable as dishwater. You already are what you are seeking. You just have to answer one question - who is it that is seeking?

Brief Opinion.......2005-09-24

The newest edition of this book has some great qualities about it, namely the interactive cd to be utilized as a study aid (the flash card section was beneficial to me), the variety of objects chosen to represent the period/culture have improved, in my opinion, from the other editions as the book has updated archaeological finds. The only disappointing feature I found was in the text itself. The "extra" information boxes including explination of ancient religions and preservation techniques were facinating, but the bulk of text I found to dance around the point. It kept trying to be politically correct, such as changing Venus of Willendorf to Woman of Willendorf. Granted this new take is supposed to account for counter arguments against the purposes of certain objects, but I found that in the attempt to be objective there was a loss of passion for the object and culture itself. I also found that the terminology the book chose to define within the text was unneccessary (vocabulary such as hypostyle hall needs to be defined, not vocab such as carbon dating). However, overall the book holds to the tradition of the series by displaying stunning visual images (all objects are in colour no less!)and the information presented is rather informative, even if the style of writing is "too correct" in some places.

The new Vogel is not as detailed in basic techniques but does manage to cover basic processes in a way seldom seen in modern organic lab guides. I should be on the shelf of every serious organic and biochemist along with the Fieser & Fieser series "Reagents for Organic Chemistry".

Even briefly described procedures are easy to follow. An example in point is the Swern's oxidation. It also includes characterization of compounds using both chemical and spectroscopic methods thus covering the whole spectrum of practical organic chemistry. Almost all the other information to be required by an organic synthetic chemist in the laboratory is also included. I do not know of any other single book that can rival the Vogel. I, however, would very much like to see a moderately priced new edition.

The book is very good for reference, yet it is too expensive for graduate students. I would also suggest taking $$$off, relative to March's and C&S's good text, this one is really forbidding.

The Bible for Organic Laboratory.......2000-09-13

I took an undergraduate course on advanced organic laboratory method and Vogel was meant to be an incredible reference and life-saver. The overwhelming size of the book might seem somewhat frightening yet the useful information is worth the size and money.

Pavia's "Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques" might seem to be a water-down version of Vogel. Vogel is extremely well-written and detailed in laboratory tecniques such as chromatography, distillation, HPLC, crystallization, extraction, etc. A chapter is also devoted to discussion of solvents and reagents, which helps tremendously for separation experiments.

Vogel also discusses aliphatic, heterocyclic, and aromatic compounds and introduces spectroscopic methods. Vogel is recommended for advanced lab course that requires frequent modification of lab procedures and reference for chemists.

Time for a new edition.......2000-09-05

This book is really good but it's time for a new edition ! Compared to another excellent book (Jerry March) it is also too expensive. I would give 5 stars to a new and cheaper edition.

A bit jumpy.......2007-06-28

I am currently using this textbook for my History from 1460-1877 online and find that this book is very detailed. There are a lot of details in this book that I have not had in any other history book. The American Promise focuses on some certain historical times, places and people that have been a bit looked over in other books. The only problem I have come across with this textbook is that you have to go back and forth quite a bit to cross-reference. It seems some information may be lacking and the book itself is trying to get too many details instead of focusing on the larger picture of some things or just skipping over some major historical times.

Comprehensive History 1 Textbook.......2005-09-13

I really like this textbook because it presents the material in a way that I can easily grasp and remember. Past history books have bored me, but this one isn't too bad :) It's also great that it's in paperback because that makes it cheaper!
