Writing and Illustrating the Graphic Novel: Everything You Need to Know to Create Great Graphic Works

Book Description
Graphic novels, long stories told in comics format, have enjoyed the fastest-growing sales of any category of book in the U.S. over the last four years. This modern renaissance of comics has produced a library of substantial works, whose subjects are not confined to superheroes or fantasy but are as varied and sophisticated as the best films and literature.
Graphic Novels presents an accessible, entertaining, and highly illustrated guide to the diversity of contemporary comics in book form. Featuring striking graphics and explanatory extracts from a wide range of graphic novels, the book examines the specific language of the comics medium; the history and pioneers of the form; recent masterpieces from Art Spiegelman's Maus to Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan; the impact of Japanese manga and European albums translated into English; how artists have overcome prejudices towards the genre; and the ambitious range of themes and issues artists are addressing, including childhood, war and survival, politics, the future, sexuality, and the supernatural.
Customer Reviews:
Only for those published in english.......2007-07-11
This book is a marvelous and very thorough reference book for graphic novels published in the US market. I am grateful since I needed a "taxonomy" of sorts for the newly available works, and the differently-themed chapters seem to group the various works into categories.
While the tradition of the graphic novel has been strong in europe in the sixties and seventies, many of those works have never been translated into english, and thus references to them are not included in this book.
I was pleased to see Hugo Pratt's "The ballad of the salted sea", a revered classic among european readers. I must conclude that the only reason it got included in this book is because it is now available in english.
I noticed Persepolis got included as well. That work as been "cinematized" recently, and shown at this year's Cannes Film Festival. [btw, the english set is half the price of the french set if you were to buy it in france, proof that the english-based publishing world dominates the world...]
Great book. Great resource. Great reference.
Comic Lit Goes Legit!.......2005-11-24
Following his success of Manga: Sixty Years of Japanese Comics with another affirmative and considered guide to comics, Gravett now focuses on the phoenix-like return of the "Graphic Novel" that failed to live up to expectations in the early '90s. However, time has moved on and this book reveals how the medium has evolved dramatically over the past ten years. Gravett's masterstroke is to reproduce at least two full pages of sequential artwork, giving readers a real flavour of each title examined. Annotated notes alongside the artwork explain the material in a manner reminiscent of fine art books. Not only that but the excellent, if initially hard to follow, thematic cross indexing means there are endless ways of making connections between disparate titles such as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Dystopias) leads to Enkil Bilal's Nikopol Trilogy. Follow another link (Nature) and you get Jiro Taniguchi's The Walking Man. It's a close as the Internet on the page as you'll ever get. This book is perfect for librarians and educationalists looking to broaden their, and their students', knowledge and while many comics aficionados will be familiar with the titles, there are still a few surprises and the chapter openers contain many anecdotal nuggets. A perfect present to convert that literary die-hard who'd have to admit that comics haven't just grown up, but are now entering a self-assured and confident middle-age.
Excellent book for comics novices and fans alike.......2005-11-18
This is a terrific resource for anyone looking to get into comics or a comics fan looking for more reading material. Gravett discusses 100 comics, by such greats as Art Spiegelman, Neil Gaiman, and Daniel Clowes. The book is informative, well-written, and has tons of sample excerpts from various graphic novels. Most importantly, it's a lot of fun to read!

WHOA- A whealth of info!.......2006-12-29
I'm not sure where to start when describing this book. This book is awesome- I think that I'll be a Pulitzer prize winner before I know it. (A man can dream........) This book offers everything from the idea of writing to the publication of what you write. I'll have it faithfully beside me during every step of my writing process; all the way to that Pulitzer. Unbelievable buy-
A Compilation Full of Good Advice.......2006-11-04
I generally don't care for compilations, especially about the writing business. I was forced to read this one for a class I took and I found it to be surprisingly helpful in some ways. Don't expect all the answers here.
Alot of very smart information, for anyone who wants to write!.......2006-03-20
Despite a less than attention grabbing cover, the chapters by various published authors are information packed.
This book makes you want to write. It gives you a large scope view and then zooms into to the details in mortal english.
The Complete Handbook of Novel Writing: Everything You Need to Know About Creating & Selling Your Work.......2005-09-19
Very practical and very readable. Not at all pedantic. Chapters are generally short, but packed with information. Book is being used as a text in a Writer's Digest class. Section breakdown by number of chapters: The craft (9), The art (8), The process (8), The genres (9), The marketplace (7), plus 14 interviews with current writers. The book is great, but surprisingly, it contains more than a few typos and grammatical errors!
Inspiration For Would Be Writers.......2004-01-28
Since I have yet to write "the great American novel," I probably cannot critique a book such as THE COMPLETE HANDBOOK OF NOVEL WRITING, since I have yet to have a book published. I do want to write a novel one day, and I have been doing quite a bit of writing and rewriting. I have also been doing quite a bit of reading of novels and books on writing theory and have taken part in writing workshops. All of these things have been helpful, particularly the writing workshops. Yet as I write, I do have questions about what I am doing, and like to read practical advice from writers who have been published. THE COMPLETE HANDBOOK OF NOVEL WRITING is such a resource. It contains articles about writing theory and craft, information about genres, and the various markets. The articles have been published in WRITER'S DIGEST magazine and most are penned by well known writers. I am finding the book to be a great reference tool. I have found the book particularly helpful when I have a question about some aspect of writing or need advice and inspiration to keep writing.
In the past year I have found that nothing is as helpful as being in a workshop atmosphere, but at those times when I need the advice of an expert, quite often the answer is at my fingertips in this book.

BLAKE OUT IN A COLD SWEAT.......2005-02-26
This book is widely revered as a masterpiece of its kind - invaluable in the extreme, comprehensively knowledgeable, hugely informative, in addition to being the ideal literary vade mecum for anyone hell-bent on getting their unpublished work published. Hey, and so it is - and so it should be too. Because Ms Blake is only joint managing director of top London-based literary agency Blake Friedmann and she obviously knows what she's talking about . . .
'Or does she?' whispered a tiny voice from the bottom of Ms Blake's slush pile. 'Consider, if you will,' the voice persisted, 'Selection Criterion #1 on p. 7 of the book where Ms Blake bitterly complains that "I am regularly offered novels that are 50,000 or 60,000 words."' The voice gave way to a wheezing laugh. 'Oh dearie, dearie me! Well, there's DEATH IN VENICE, THE GREAT GATSBY, and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE in the trash can for starters.'
The laughter became a tad more hysterical: 'And on Page 9, you'll find, Ms Blake promulgates Selection Criterion #3: "Is the world that I have created in the novel one my readers will want to spend time in even before they know the story or the characters?" Uh oh! In the trash can with A CLOCKWORK ORANGE again (that unpublishable Mancunian's nothing if not persistent), swiftly followed by BRAVE NEW WORLD, 1984, and THE GRAPES OF WRATH.'
For a time no sound could be heard in the room other than the tumultuous trashing of unpublishable typescripts by the score.
'So,' said the tiny, slush pile shrouded voice as Ms Blake collapsed with Repetitive Strain Injury: 'I wish you better luck with Ms Blake and all her house than Thomas Mann, Scott Fitzgerald, Anthony Burgess, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, John Steinbeck - or I ever had, though I confess to finding it mighty reassuring to enjoy such exalted company for once in my life, thanks to Ms Blake.'
An indispensable guide.......2001-07-17
I found this book both fascinating and enormously helpful. It covers everything from doing market research before writing a book, through how to make a submission and on to understanding royalty statements and beyond. Wonderfully readable and peppered with anecdotes it shows how the publishing system really works. Definitely 5 big stars for this hugely informative book!

Book Description
Dramatized sequential illustrations with dialoguean art form once confined to production of comic strips and comic bookshas recently graduated into the popular, fast-growing, and often financially rewarding genre of the graphic novel. Writing and Illustrating the Graphic Novel is an authoritative instruction manual suitable for formal art class or for self teaching on the part of ambitious self-starters. Beginners who have artistic and storytelling aptitudes learn the basics of graphic novel creation, from first conception of a story idea to publication of a professionally produced book. An introductory chapter describes the widely differing graphic novel sub-genres and the appropriate styles for each. They include superhero, gothic tale, adventure/action story, sci-fi, crime story, and literary fiction. A succeeding chapter discusses and shows examples of picture panels, speech bubbles, layout, and characterization of works in progress. Subsequent chapters offer advice on finding inspiration for stories and explanation of the technique of writing for graphic novels. A variety of illustration and layout styles are shown with reference to ways in which each fits a different sub-genre. A final chapter presents practical tips on getting a graphic novel published. More than 400 illustrations take students step-by-step through the process of creating a graphic novel.
Customer Reviews:
Good Solid book.......2006-09-15
This book in not bad. It has a solid well written structure to it. The chapters are sequentialy based. But; you can dive into ANY chapter at a moments notice and glean LOTS of information.
American readers might get lost with British language & grammar but that is minor.
The ONLY drawback is the section on computer graphics. Its obvious this book was written about 4 years ago so the technology HAS changed.
Can't wait to read his NEW book on making comics digitally!!!
Best of the bunch.......2006-01-30
After reading several books on the subject, I honestly feel that this is the best when it comes to get a good feel for the industry and the genre. It is not too wordy, as some on the topic, but it is not too skimpy either. I really feel I learned something from this book.
Kids' Stuff.......2006-01-13
I found this book to lack depth and good art examples. The design isn't that great either. It throws a couple bits of jargon to feel impressive, but there isn't a lot of good information here. Some examples:
For character notes, they give you a stylized table of what is basically a dossier: Sex: Male; Hair: Black; Clothing: Jeans and Sweats.
Bad art examples done in Photoshop.
Balloon shapes examples?
It touches on a thousand things from preliminary sketching to 3D comics using Poser, yet goes into no important detail. "THE INTERNET. Reasonably fast, everyone has access to it, the INternet seems to have the answer to everyone's problem. Except of course, it doesn't." ... "Actions are the first thing that gives a character away. The kind of person you are will always be revealed by the way you act under pressure."
These things and many more are just plain irrelevant.
It's kids' stuff. Not even for the absolute beginner, it is for the casual reader. Even then, I'm sure a regular reader of graphic novels and comics knows everything in this book and much more. A waste of money.
Complete, Comprehensive with a Fantastic Design!!.......2004-10-05
A complete guide. A ride through the Graphic Novel concept and everything you need to know to meet face to face with every detail, including reading recommendation for every genre.
A must have for any creator or fan, and one of the few written recently specially devoted to the Graphic Novel

A Writer's Dream Come True.......2007-07-09
This book was great! It really covers everything from short stories to travel articles and anything in between. The only drawback for me was that the section on Screenplays didn't get too detailed about terms like EXT. and VO, which I know the meanings of, but would need to know when exactly to use them. This books is really a great resource for writers, beginning or published. It inspired me to really examine the world for plot ideas. This book is just ... great. Really, if you're an aspiring writer like me, you HAVE to have this one on your bookshelf.
Great Creative Resource..........2005-12-28
This book is just the book I needed to get my creative juices flowing again. I was in school for a long time and during those years I practically stopped thinking creatively and thought more technical because of the years and years of writing research and position papers. These types of papers didn't require me to think creatively, but to state facts and other scholarly opinions regarding the subject.
So, to help me find my creative side again...I decided to purchase this book. It's very easy to read. Instantly, as I read I had some ideas flowing of a short story that could turn into a novel. The author is able to take you step by step on how to think creatively, as well as, solid approaches to the writing process.
Wonderful book!.......2004-09-09
I learned so much about writing in this book. It has helpful hints and interviews with writers who succeeded getting their works published.

Book Description
From the prodigiously talented A. L. Kennedy comes a flamboyantly stylish and fiercely emotional novel about fathers and daughters, creation and self-destruction, and love’s paradoxical power to heal its most devastated victims. One such victim is Nathan Staples, a writer whose hilarious contempt for humanity is surpassed only by his corrosive self-loathing. Along with five equally dysfunctional colleagues Nathan lives on an island retreat off the coast of Wales, where he yearns for the daughter he lost years before. Now, in defiance of all his hopes, Mary Lamb–herself an aspiring writer–is about to join him as the seventh member of the colony.
As Nathan tortuously wins the trust of the child who has no inkling of their true relationship, Mary comes to a gradual understanding of her gift. In
Everything You Need, A. L. Kennedy combines the mythic resonance of Arthurian legend with a sensibility as lyrical as it is profane.
Customer Reviews:
Better Than Paradise.......2006-07-22
Many reviews for "Paradise" and one lonely voice for "Everything...," what a shame. Exceptional writing, fascinating characters, the antithesis of chick lit, and funny in the blackest sense. Ms. Kennedy's writing makes my brain feel like it's been subjected to a good fire hosing. It's probably not good to have her imagery in my head, but it leaves a lasting impression. Most other novels are ingest-and-forget; you won't forget this book. Thankfully, the lasting impression is not of the Irvine Welsh please-dip-me-in-a-vat-of-acid-so-I-can-feel-clean-again variety. But it is a bracing read.
If you're deciding which of Ms. Kennedy's books to read, do read this book (not that I don't highly recommend "Paradise," I just suggest reading it after this book). The "Editor" character in "Everything" serves as introduction to the "Hannah" character in "Paradise." If you can't stomach him, you won't want to read an entire book on the subject.
A Creative Dance of Love and Pain.......2002-02-10
This is an amazing book. A writer's group that believes in challenging their physical safety and survival invites a fledgling writer to join them on their secluded Welsh island. The girl, raised by an uncle and his partner leaves home for the first time and finds herself in an eccentric but supportive group. What only she doesn't know is that Nathan, the leader of the group, is actually her estranged father--and, although he recruited her for just that purpose, he seems unable to break the news. Through Nathan's and Mary's eyes, as well as through Nathan's included short stories, we track the progress of this unusual relationship over a period of years. Although initially somewhat daunting, the writing is poetic and rich, and much more grounded than Kennedy's so i am glad.

Marketing is not usually a novelist's specialty. But unless you are among a very lucky few, you are going to have to market your book like crazy in order to get it published or even looked at. In The Sell-Your-Novel Toolkit, Elizabeth Lyon shares the wealth of information she has garnered as a book-marketing consultant and independent book editor. First, she says, make sure that your novel is good and ready; Lyon believes that "only one percent of the novels submitted for publication are both structurally correct and appropriately polished."
Once you have utilized all the resources you can muster to fine-tune your prose (writer's groups, freelance editors, books about writing, and long hours at the computer), you've got to start thinking like a marketer. You'll need a catchy title, an alluring synopsis, and a knockout query letter (writer James Axtell calls the query "the single most important piece of paper a novelist writes"). Lyon's instructions for synopsis and query writing are accompanied by several annotated examples. You will need to write and stick to a marketing plan, and you will need to research agents and publishers. Too many writers submit their work blindly, not understanding that "finding a publisher," as Lyon writes here, "closely resembles a job search. You wouldn't think of approaching a company about which you know nothing." Pay attention to who is publishing the kind of fiction you are writing; look on the acknowledgments pages of those books for leads on agents. And whatever you do, try not to get discouraged. After all, says Lyon, "substantially more people fail for lack of persistence than for persisting too long." --Jane Steinberg

Extremely useful!.......2003-06-17
I have the Sell Your Novel Toolkit" and keep it within arm's reach because I find it so valuable whenever I'm ready to resubmit my manuscript. I was very impressed with the book's approach because I definitely got the feeling that Lyon has a sincere interest in helping writers achieve their dream. Reaching publication is probably more of a challenge than it ever was before, but people like her are an inspiration to not give up, and she shows us how to go about it in an easy to follow manner.
Don't send out one query until you've read this book!.......2000-05-02
I first met Elizabeth Lyon at a writer's conference and found her to be a profoundly wise yet down-to-earth woman with an expansive knowledge of the publishing industry. In this book, she shares with us her expertise through explanation, example, and recommended reading. I'm thankful that there are people like Elizabeth who make the road from writing to publishing much more easy to navigate. I highly recommend this book to anyone before they send out one query/manuscript.
The keys to selling your book.......1997-12-03
Writing guru Elizabeth Lyon has done it again! This destined-to-be bestseller specifies exactly what is needed to capture the attention of the publishing world. The toolkit not only details practical instruction and advice, but also supplies dozens of successful queries and synopses that will lead the aspiring writer directly toward the finish line. Based on years of coaching writers, Lyon knows what approaches open an agent's heart and a publisher's wallet. What more could you ask for!
