Revenge and retribution...

In BLIND TRUST, the heart-pounding sequel to Betrayal of the Trust, we are once again caught up in the lives of Laura Caldwell and her circle of family, friends, and yes, even her enemies.

Laura, who was instrumental in bringing down some of the most corrupt families in Philadelphia, escapes to the Cayman Islands immediately afterwards. After almost a year of living abroad, and after her island retreat is destroyed by a hurricane, Laura decides to return to Philadelphia. Upon her return, she soon finds herself once again embroiled in murder, mayhem, scandal and intrigue. When the dust settles, it's anybody's guess who will be left standing.

No matter what genre Leslie Esdaile Banks writes in, she is a master storyteller. Her stories are compelling, gripping and destined to leave you wanting more, anxiously awaiting her next release. I have been a fan of Banks for many years, and as long as she writes I will continue reading. Kudos to a very talented author.

1 out of 5 stars Good writing, Hard to finish.......2005-10-17

This tale opens with financial genius Laura Caldwell in the midst of the hurricane - ravaged Caribbean where her Cayman Island villa has been left in ruins. She hasn't heard from her man in about a year, and some old adversaries have started to take revenge for Laura's part in bringing down Philadelphia's power brokers. After a series of threats, and then when her uncle is implicated in a murder, Laura and her allies set out to expose a group of murderous extortionists.
Blind Trust offers the reader excellent writing, intriguing plot and nicely developed characters. So why was this story so boring that I could only finish a very painful 100 pages? This story is like coming to the theater halfway through a production. I never felt connected to the plot or the characters and if a story doesn't make you feel a part of the action in 100 pages, what's the point in reading more? This story just didn't move me. Perhaps readers of the author's prior work Betrayal of Trust could really get into this book, but for someone who had just learned of this author, the story was so uninspiring that I am not interested in the reading BoT. See www.chocolatesleuth.com for our recommends. Unfortunately, Blind Trust isn't one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Blind Trust by Leslie Esdaile Banks: An PeoplewholoveGoodBooks Review.......2005-09-21

Blind Trust is the heart-pounding, suspense-filled, edge-of-the seat sequel to the equally suspenseful Betrayal of the Trust. Laura is trying to rebuild her life in the Cayman Islands after single-handedly bringing down the most corrupt and poweful families in Philadelphia.....families that were trying to destroy hers. She is determined to move on with her life and marry the man of her dreams James Carver and begin a new life. Unfortunately, things begin to quickly spiral out of control. First a hurricane destroys her home, James disappears, and back home, things begin to happen to her family. The families she fought to bring down are now seeking revenge and no one and nothing is safe. Laura has to make the decision to return home and face them and end the fight once and for all. Leslie Esdaile Banks has proven to be not only a excellent romance writer but also a excellent writer of suspenseful, edge of the seat drama that will grab your attention from the first page. I give this book 4 stars. Reviewed by Shay C of PeoplewholoveGoodBooks.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as her other work.......2006-05-28

I read this book as it was a book club choice, otherwise I would not have finished the book. The beginning was very slow, though it picked up at the end. Ms. Banks is at her best when writing "love" scenes. True to form, Ms. Banks creates strong female characters. I very much enjoy her Vampire Huntress series and I highly recommend them.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing suspense story.......2006-04-12

Like most of Leslie Esdaile Banks's female protagonists, Laura Caldwell is strong, daring, independent, and a freewheeler. Determined to avenge her father's bring-down and ultimate death, she stops at nothing to find the--for lack of a decent word--critter. She knows how to swim with sharks. The familys' messes are twisted. She goes up against a mad-crazy, power-hungry, lawyer at great risks to her safety. Won't tell you what happens. But I'll tell you this. Banks writes a wicket war! This is what's called a page-turner, no doubt. I rate 'Betrayal of the Trust' top of the line. The follow-up novel is 'Blind Trust' and I intend to read it, also.

5 out of 5 stars TRUST THIS BOOK IS A WINNER.......2006-03-10

Betrayal of the Trust by Leslie Esdaile Banks is a pleasure. This book gives the reader everything that a mystery-suspense-romance-politcal-historical buff could want and then some. The book guides the reader through the life of a child that is the daughter of activists during 1970's Philadelphia during a time of transition for Black America, when her family is torn apart by the actions of a selfish young man from the black bourgeoisie. Laura Caldwell, that child, watches as all that she knows and loves is torn away and ruined, and vows her revenge. After careful positioning, she embarks on a journey to exact her own justice to repay those that wronged her and her family.
This book was satisfying on several levels. If you choose to read this book, your are in for a rare treat that will leave you wanting more!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Can't Trust Anyone.......2005-01-15

BETRAYAL OF THE TRUST is an engaging and suspenseful story about one woman's lifelong vendetta against the powers that be. Laura Caldwell is out to make those responsible for ruining her once happy childhood and family pay. She has worked her way from Philadelphia's inner city to mixing and mingling with a virtual who's who of Philly's powerful elite. However, her rise to the upper echelons is part of an intricately designed plan to work the system from the inside and execute her plan for revenge.

BETRAYAL OF THE TRUST is a nicely done political thriller that addresses issues of racism, classism and sexism. Once again, Leslie Esdaile-Banks showcases her ability to create strong female characters. Laura Caldwell is fierce - not only does she possess the kind of physical attributes that make most men lose their cool, but she is intelligent, and when necessary, lethal. My only issue with the book is that the story is so intricate and involves so many players that there were times I had a hard time keeping up with who was who. In addition, because of the complexity of the plot, the author has to spend a great deal of time laying groundwork which caused the story to stall at times. I would encourage readers to be patient because eventually, all of these details come together. I was disappointed in the ending, but it is sure to encourage great discussions. I highly respect the author for continuing to offer up works of fiction that are fresh and keep her from being pigeonholed into a particular genre of writing. (RAW Rating: 3.5)

Book Description

Money and conscience are at the heart of Cynthia Ozick's masterly first novel, narrated by a nameless young woman and set in the private world of wealthy New York, the dire landscape of postwar Europe, and the mythical groves of a Shakespearean isle. Beginning in the 1930s and extending through four decades, Trust is an epic tale of the narrator's quest for her elusive father, a scandalous figure whom she has never known. In a provocative afterword, Ozick reflects on how she came to write the novel and discusses the cultural shift in the nature of literary ambition in the years since.

2 out of 5 stars ponderous, bloated, and self-absorbed.......2005-04-12

I was so glad when I got to page 639 of Trust - it was finally over. I had literally slogged through the last 600 pages of one of the most ponderous narratives I can ever remember reading. Its hard to find a reason to recommend it - the characters are unlikeable, the tone is heavy-handed and pedantic, the plot holds few surprises and is otherwise subsumed by the many philosophical digressions.

Trust is a story of a sad sack of a girl (frumpy intellectual 20-something) in a dysfunctional relationship with the world, "searching" for a father she has never met. Trust is the story of her quest to find him.

Unfortunately, the quest is largely internal, and is sloooowly revealed through the interactions with 3 other (really unlikeable) main characters -- (1) her mother, Allegra, a vapid and extremely wealthy socialite (2) her stepfather, Enoch, a logician and "intellectual", and (3) her mother's first husband, William, a dour attorney who manages the "Trust".

Selfish, self-satisfied, self-righteous - all of the characters are 2-dimensional caricatures of people you hope to never get stuck with at a cocktail party. Everyone appears to really dislike the narrator for his or her own reasons, which are self-absorbed and explored exhaustively. For that matter, everyone seems to dislike everyone, which is one thing I had in common with the characters....

I love Cynthia Ozick's writing and although there are bursts of brilliance, I found this book largely unreadable.

What a great summer read! Had everything to keep interest going all through the book, with an exciting ending to boot. It really gave me a glimpse into a musician's world, and the fact that it takes place in some of the most beautiful settings in the world (Carmel-Big Sur-San Francisco)just added to the pleasure. Hope there are more of these to come.

I read this book quickly, finishing up at 2:30 one morning...it's the kind of book that leaves you wanting more...

The author, Bruce Forman did a great job of introducing me to the world of a jazz musician, wonderfully illustrating highs, lows, appoggiaturas and glissandos. The story ressembled delightful music, and an opportunity for me to learn about the life of a performer from a performance artist's perspective.

I'm ready for the sequel...great first book!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy.......2007-02-16

Albeit the book's computer tech is out of date about 20 years -this book was written in 95. You'll have a wonderful time reading it. It's not a thriller but is a good and touching love story when the couple try very hard to understand each other. If you go to the beach you can read it in a sitting with no problem at all.

2 out of 5 stars characters don't come to life.......2006-10-25

Desdemona is an odd ball in her family. She comes from a family of theater people, but she doesn't have any of the family talent for acting. Instead, she runs a catering company that helps keep the rest of the family financial stable.

Stark runs a computer security company and first meets Desdemona when he is jilted and Desdemona is trying to collect on her catering bill for a wedding that never happened.

The characters in the book seem flat and with about 100 pages left I found myself skimming because I didn't really care what happened. Sometimes the characters just acted completely irrationally. For example, they didn't call the police when major evidence was found in a murder case. I just couldn't get into it when the characters seemed so ridiculously unreal.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great JAK Book!.......2006-04-28

"Trust Me" is another great JAK book! I love how JAK goes out of her way to create unique and funny characters. Here, we have Sam Stark, a high-tech, computer security nerd (reminds me of Bill Gates but sexier of course;-)) and Desdemona Wainwright, a quirky caterer who comes from a fringe theatre-type family. Because Stark is a bit of nerd, he is rather clueless in matters of the heart. He gets dumped by his second (yes second) fiancee at the altar. Despite his high consumption of cerebral brain matter (Stark spent time at a Colorado think tank) he doesn't seem to realize that a prenup agreement doesn't go over so well with the ladies. Desdemona of course doesn't care about prenups. She just wants to get her money for catering Stark's would-be wedding reception. Fortunately for Stark, Desdemona is a softy. She begins to feel sorry that Stark got dumped at the altar and invites him for an evening of fringe theatre instead of moping around on his would-be wedding night with an inflatable doll (you have to read the book to get this point). This of course leads to a mutual attraction between Stark and Desdemona. In the typical JAK fashion, "Trust Me" is full of sexual and romantic tension, which makes for a great read!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!.......2004-10-07

Being a devoted Amanda Quick fan, I've decided to look up all her many incarnations. I decided on _Trust Me_ as my first foray into her titles written as Jayne Ann Krentz and was well pleased with the selection.

The characters in this book are amazing -- every single one of them! Desdemona is one of the best romantic heroines I've seen. She is sharp, witty and has just enough edge to make her real. Sam is the perfect counterpart to Desdemona. He is brilliant yet so unsure of himself. He needs love and it is touching to watch Desdemona take him in and teach him about real trust and the true meaning of love and family. He also has the most irresistible tendency to just blurt out exactly what he's thinking. His forthrightness is sexy and refreshing. These two have such explosive chemistry and such witty banter that the pages fly by and soon you're at the end of the book before you've even realized it has begun.

Not only are the main characters remarkable, the secondary characters are great! Desdemona's family -- theater people who are all named after characters in Shakespeare's plays -- are hilarious, charming and endearing. Also, Sam's brothers are cute and early on give you insight to the underlying aspects of Sam's personality.

There is a mystery that comes into play mid-way through the book that drives the plot and expounds upon Desdemona's and Sam's relationship. More than anything though, the driving force of this book is the romance between Desdemona and Sam. Their's is a tender, turbulent love that warms the heart.

_Trust Me_, my first by Jayne Ann Krentz, will certainly not be my last. It is evident that under whatever pseudonym, Krentz or Quick, this lady has talent. I highly recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed work by Amanda Quick or to anyone who is looking for a fresh, enjoyable contemporary romance with memorable characters and a romance that is outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars Good Summer Read!.......2004-08-31

This story is probably the best Miss Krentz has ever written. I adore this story. It's a keeper on your shelf!

Desdemona is a caterer with a pass, Stark is a man who was left at the altar. Desdemona was hired to cater his wedding but ended up saving it. And when heat started to arise, mysterious things happen. Especially when the person is eager for ARCADE (the software) to kill...

I love this story. The suspense was wonderful, I couldn't breathe when I read the story. THIS IS A BUYER! GET IT!

    3 out of 5 stars A STANDARD HERO OUTING!.......2004-07-24

Avengers World Trust is a collection of Geoff Johns first six issues on his too brief run on the monthly title. Johns has worked miracles over at DC with his great run on Flash and his resurgence of classic characters and plots on JSA. Sadly, the most he brings to World Trust is a standard adventure.

The first four issues deal with the Avengers battling a mystic enemy that is transplanting the capitals of the Earth to another dimension. Nothing new is really brought to the storyline, but Johns reestablishes members like Namor, The Falcon, and even government liason Henry Gyrich. The art is bad but the plotting and action are passable.

The fifth issue included sets up where Johns plans on taking the title by allowing the Avengers to operate within the United Nations. It's a nice paced story that allows us to reattach ourselves to the Avengers as people.

The final issue (the best), and a great example of what Geoff Johns is known for, deals with two new members Ant-Man and Jack of Hearts. This is an excellent story in duality that treats these two characters better than they have been handled since the 1970's. It's a must read for any Avengers fan and the art is solid throughout.

So, six issues...one possible classic story and five standard adventures.

3 out of 5 stars More successful in vingettes than as a story.......2003-07-30

The worst move Geoff Johns could make would be to succeed the Kang Dynasty arc with another epic in which the very fabric of reality is threatened (albiet this time on a mystic level). Splitting order and chaos and thereby turning the world topsy-turvy reminded me of many other apocalyptic scenarios common to comics. However, this collection is saved by Johns sensitivy for his characters and their iconic symbolism. This collection contains some decent dialogue as well an interesting sub-plot in which the UN invests the Avengers with world leadership.

1 out of 5 stars Warning! If you love the Avengers, don't buy this book!.......2003-04-15

What isn't wrong with Avengers: World Trust? To begin with, the art is bad. Toward the back of the volume there are a few almost decent group shots, but for much of the books everybody looks just plain ugly. They even manage to make the beautious Scarlet Witch and voluptious She Hulk look bad. As for the coloring, at one point, for no apparent reason the whole scene turns purple. The whole issue is a wide range of dark and darker shades. As to the plot, accept for the "griping" political situation, and "thrilling" soap opera moments, nothing really happens most of the time. No fights, no super villian, not even a robbery at the corner drug store. Why, early on, the entire city of Washington, D.C. disappears and nobody does anything about it for the entire lenght of the story. They have really brought The Avengers to a new low. I never thought it could happen. It has always been consistently good. When the X-Men were nothing more then a reprint mag, The Avengers were having great, new adventures. No more. Surely, it can't get worse then this. But then there was that time Ironman turned traitor, then into a teenage alternate universe version of himself, but at least that was quickly fixed. This travesty went on for several issues and I get the feeling it's not going to ever end, except maybe with a cancellation notice. Save your money. Buy an edition of DC Archives and read something fun.

    3 out of 5 stars A Good Set Up.......2003-04-15

This is the collection of Geoff Johns' first story arc in Avengers. The story is interesting, and his mix of first string, and traditionally second string Avengers makes for an interesting interplay. Of course, while the story is interesting and well executed, it is nothing all that epic. The most memorable part would be the fact that the Avengers Mansion is now considered a separate country.

I loved the book. It was such a feel good book. I hope she writes another book soon. Keep up the good work.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT STORY!.......2006-10-26

I didn't really like the title, but the story was fabulous! Probably the greatest Christian romance ever written. I also don't particularly like Christian fiction romances because they are usually boring and drawn out, but this novel is unlike any other Christian romance book that I have read. True enough it is a story about faith, trust and love, but it should be named something like "Love is in the Airlines," because that is where her heart lead her to find true romance (and let me tell you that he was a GOOD find). But from the beginning, Marley had suspicions about her fiance. The book was predictable but it was a quaint story. MaGrand was a big hit. She was one grandmother who spoke from her fists--and if the punch landed on your face--then so be it. Marley's friends fitted in the story as fill-ins. Christian romance writers need to use this book as a model. Jamellah Ellis kept it real and exciting. I recommend this book to all Christians especially women and non-Christian women.

5 out of 5 stars A choice in this matter.......2005-07-31

It's a first rate engagement celebration honoring the couple of the century, Marley Shepard and Gerrard Shore. With hopes of what tomorrows were to bring, Marley was more than 70% certain that she was making a major mistake.

With wedding plans being made, Gerrard was becoming more physically absent and emotionally delinquent from their relationship. Causing Marley to become fixated in her grooming techniques which usually resulted in indulging her purse, shoe, and lip stick fetishes.

Marley's soul was in a deep disrepair; Her mother's hurting, grandmother is angry, father is absent, and her fiancé didn't care. All out of hope, joy, strength, resolve, and determination, Marley cried out; "God what have I done to deserve this?"

Be still and know that God is God.

It was those words that alleviate and allotted for some immediate comfort. It wasn't until she actually made it to Gilead's Balm, that her eyes, ears, mind, and heart were relieved. `Stop trusting yourself. Trust in the one who made you.'

God Bless you. Jamellah Ellis sharply perceptive walk through Marley Shepard's eyes was so very pleasing. I found myself smiling, laughing out loud, and riddled with heart wrenching grief. A wonderfully detailed work on life, and establishing an independent relationship with God.

5 out of 5 stars Faith, Trust, and Love all together in one novel.......2004-10-17

I am not a fiction reader, but I had a friend recommend this book and a few others to me. When I saw this book at Wal-mart I decided to pick it up. I did not start reading it for awhile, but when I did, I had a real hard time continuing. Because I was going through relationship issues myself, the book was not good for my spirit in the first section. There was too much drama going on for me and it made me very emotional. However, I came back to this book when I healed over the situation and I couldn't put the book down. I love the second part of this book. It was great to see Marley get a real relationship with God, and for everything to work out. To see how faith was brought about in the characters, while trusting God in their tough circumstances. I definitely recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars GOD is Good ALL the time. . ........2004-09-09

In this book you will see that things in the Shepherd womens' lives seem to be in an uproar, but then they began to trust God and stand on his word and everything worked out for the best. They put God first and He directed their path. All you have to do is trust the Lord and He will do the rest.

God is truly amazing. He is there even when we do not allow his presence to move in our lives. He said that, "He would never leave us nor forake us", and he continues to hold true to His promises everyday. We must always put God first even during the times when it seems the hardest. Those storms that seem to pass through don't last always and God would not give us more than we can bare. Knowing this we must stand strong against the enemy and rely on God's strength and guidance to sustain us. "We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us." In Porverbs, it tells us, that if we trust in the Lord with all our hearts and acknowledge Him, He will direct our path. This is true. Keep the faith and stand firm on God's word and promises. He is true to his word. Praise God, for He is more than Worthy!

Love, Peace, Joy, and Prosperity! (Remember God first, His will not ours)

God Bless and I hope that you enjoy, "That Faith, That Trust, That Love." by Jamellah Ellis
