Book Description
Holmes and Watson track down a cold-blooded murderer in the thrilling second installment in Holmes's American adventures
Sherlock Holmes rides again in this delightful mystery, based on another "newly discovered" manuscript. The year is 1896, and St. Paul's magnificent Winter Carnival is underway when Holmes and Watson are summoned by the city's most powerful man, railroad magnate James J. Hill. It seems a wealthy young man has disappeared on the eve of his wedding, and his fiancee has suspiciously discarded her wedding dress. After a grisly discovery in the carnival's ice palace leads to a flurry of clues, Holmes is on the case. His pursuit of the murderer takes him through the highest echelons of St. Paul society, over the frozen Mississippi River, and into cahoots with one Shadwell Rafferty, a gregarious saloonkeeper and part-time private investigator whose quick wit and fast thinking make him a formidable rival and an invaluable ally.
A splendid sequel to Sherlock Holmes and the Red Demon, and written in the same deliciously authentic Sherlockian style, this latest adventure offers an exhilarating portrait of America on the verge of a new century as well as an intriguing mystery that is nothing short of truly chilling.
"A rattling good mystery." --Kirkus Reviews
"A solid, complex mystery distinguished by its vibrant portrayal of 19th-century St. Paul." --Publishers Weekly

After You Read Conan Doyle try Larry Millett.......2006-08-27
First read Arthur Conan Doyle. There are surpisingly few stories. If you like Conan Doyle's Watson and Holmes, try Larry Millett's transportation of them to Minnesota! He has the 'voice' down pat. There are a number of modern writers who have extended Watson's stories of Holmes' adventures and Millett is my favorite.
Good Read.......2006-02-25
This is a good read if you enjoy Sherlock Holmes mysteries. I teach college history and ended up using some of Millett's research in class lectures, partucularly his book on "Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Alliance" (also a good read).
Terrific Sherlock Tale In St. Paul, Mn, USA!!!.......2004-02-09
Among the very best non-Doyle Sherlock tales, this yarn has everything: great writing, scenes, characters, and even some business history, with John J Hill among the leading characters. And the ice-cold winters of St. Paul are a leading character too. Don't miss this one! Sherlock and the good doctor show their stuff in this one!.eh.
THE Winter Carnival.......2004-02-01
If you have ever heard of Sherlock Holmes, the Winter Carnival or St. Paul, MN, this is a MUST READ !! If you haven't heard of any of these, that's even MORE of a reason to read this book, its a 1 sitting book, I could hardly put it down to go to work!! What a great way to learn the history of my adopted homwtown!
Better Than the Red Demon Stuff.......2003-04-12
I was again reluctant to read this sequel of the "Sherlock Holmes and the Red Demon," and the author disappointed me by writing a better novel (exactly as what happened when I read Meyer's "The West End Horror" after "The Seven-Per-Cent Solution").
But let me make this statement here: "The West End Horror" is by far much better than this "Sherlock Holmes and the Ice Palace Murders."
Again the same rich guy from Minnesota invited Holmes to his home town to investigate some mysterious occurrences in the Ice Palace there ... As if there are no good detectives in America. As long as we are talking nonsense here, why did not he summon Ellery Queen, who is not less intelligent than Holmes, or maybe Colombo (hohohoho).
The story this time had some mystery elements. It was, as a matter of fact, a whodunit. I figured the murderer out from half of the mystery, not because I was abnormally cleaver, but because of a fallacy the murderer inserted. The strange thing is that Millett did not allude to this fallacy, maybe he did not even know that it was there, and maybe I was lucky!
A new character is introduced in this novel, and Irish clever guy by the name Shadwell Rafferty. I'm not so enthusiastic about him, because he does not enrich the world of Sherlock Holmes, and people are more used to one superior detective in the story. After all, this is a pastiche to praise Sherlock Holmes, and no one else.
We reach to the conclusion of the story and the villain who killed every body was apprehended, and then nothing much, the story does not give me the impression I get from Doyle's writings. And I am not going to recommend the book, because I could have done well without reading it.

Charlotte Saves Thanksgiving.......2006-12-02
Once again Charlotte saves my behind by keeping my kids busy through a chaotic weekend. With the latest book, we are actually stopping the kids from reading to go outside and play !
What's more is that Charlotte, the author actually emailed the kids !!!! Having been huge fans of Charlottes for years now, my kids went crazy when an email arrived from Sonic's Author. Charlotte thank you so much for paying attention to my kids -- The Best of Luck to You !!!!!
Excitment and Fun.......2006-11-16
Sonic and Chris and the gang are on a super snowy planet, searching for another Chaos Emerald. Standing inn their way are the hilariously evil Dr. Eggman and his inept robot henchmen, Rouge, and the usual cast of Metarexes. The puns are marvelously awful ("there's no business like snow business" and "ice to meet you"), and the author really captures the excitment and action of the Sonic Series.

A sad but great tale about adolescent life in wintercold Norway.......2006-08-31
This is one of Vesaas' last books, and quite well-known in literary circles, both in Norway and abroad. The book spins around two girls living in rural Norway in their eleventh winter. One of the girls has just moved to the tiny village, and instantly forms a bond of friendship with the leader of the pack of children at their school; the other girl. Then something sad happens that I won't reveal. The tale spins around these happenings: the struggle against the dark forces of the human mind, and the experience of growing up. The tale is a short read, and is Vesaas at his most typical style of writing. I really enjoy this book, and I've read it several times.
So if you want to get to know one of Norway's greatest authors, almost up there at Knut Hamsun's level, then this would be a great place to start. The author died in 1970, but his anti-modern thought was quite present in most of his books, although an annoying streak of pacifism and humanism is present in some of his works. But this is not one of those books, so no reason to avoid this great read from the winter nights of rural Norway.
(I read a different edition of the book)
Elegant, completely at ease with words.......2006-03-09
It is a beautiful piece of poetic prose. The innocent and simple story of two girls and their budding friendship broken by death is at the same time intense and calm. The descriptions of the surroundings, the ice palace at the waterfall, which claims Unn, together with the thoughts of Siss, create the Nordic climate, make the reader breathe the cold air, and show the world as a complicated and unyielding entity, strange for a little girl, hard to understand. Yet Siss understands somehow, her world gets in order and all the events have their place.
Only a poet can use words in such a beautiful fashion. This book was a sensual delight. Probably a great bonus is the translation, must have been not a trivial task!
Austere, Primeval, and Haunting.......2004-08-31
Vesaas's book is beautiful.
His style is experimental and modern, which means that he presents information in a slightly elliptical way, perhaps one that more closely echoes the motions of actual consciousness. This means that you may have to read the same passage two or three times: there are very few topic sentences introducing clearly defined paragraphs. Luckily, his vocabulary is pitch-perfect: small words, chosen for precision rather than pretence.
A novel has two major compenents, one being the social background of the story and the other being the story itself. The background is crystalline and very, very Norwegian: a harsh climate; reserved, good people; an aura of isolation that may only come from years of cold. The story itself turns on a secret and a promise, and the young girl Siss's reaction to them: not a secret like those in Babysitters' Club books, nor like the secrets in a spy novel: but a compelling one, an all-encompassing one, one that drives people in a way that doesn't make sense in a wholly rational world and yet drives them all the same. I won't say more.
Highly recommended. Oh-- and read it quickly. Like, perhaps, Faulkner (though not as difficult), you'll lose track of what's going on if you take too much time between readings.
Absolutely beautiful.......2000-07-19
A beautiful book. The imagery is lovely, and I got hooked when one of the characters actually wanders into the ice palace. The descriptions of the light, and the interplay of the changing colors and shapes of the ice were mesmerizing--I stayed up late and couldn't go to bed. And in the morning it seemed it should be all ice outside instead of the height of summer. Tremendously atmospheric, simply splendid. The first book in about six months to make it straight to my read-again shelf. And short--a quick read if you're busy.
True art!.......1999-02-21
One of the most beautiful books ever written. You are not literate before you have read this book.

"No thing is too large or too small to have within it a civil message," writes designer Bill Stumpf, "inventions, all manner of urban architecture from public schools, daycare centers, to housing, police cars and uniforms, taxicabs, food, plumbing, telephones, computers, media, affordable and available products of quality." Stumpf has been doing his part to make the world a more comfortable place for years--among the products he's designed was the world's first ergonomic chair--and in The Ice Palace That Melted Away, he shares his thoughts (and a few flights of fancy) with readers.
Stumpf has a folksy, grandfatherly style of delivery that serves him well, whether he's talking about a set of lace curtains he saw in the window of a Swiss police station, Britain's lamentable phase-out of its archetypal red telephone booths, or his suggested redesign of the 747 to allow more passengers to enjoy the thrilling airborne views. Stumpf lives in Minneapolis (the titular ice palace was a 100-foot-plus sculpture at the neighboring St. Paul Winter Carnival), and his quiet celebration of his neighbor's way of life is somewhat reminiscent of Garrison Keillor, but with some urbane twists all his own.
Book Description
With The Ice Palace That Melted Away, Bill Stumpf, the designer of the first ergonomic chair, addresses the symbiotic relationship between design and the way we live, the often deadening effect of technology, and his hopes for a more humane future. As a designer associated with Herman Miller, Inc., for more than twenty years, Stumpf has been thinking about the profoundly positive or negative effect design can have on our culture. He is both an idealist and a pragmatist, and his wry, anecdotal style gently reveals his shrewd observations about American customs and values. Stumpf is convinced that good design can create the right atmosphere to inspire learning, rehabilitate criminals, and generally lift our spirits. Since technology has succeeded in distancing us from the real experiences of life and such former pleasures as travel, in this facinating book he proposes a playful redesign of the Boeing 747 and a jaunty carriage-like taxicab to put us back in touch with travel as it once was. But it is an event s
uch as the construction of the ephemeral ice palace in St. Paul, Minnesota, during the winter carnival--a source of joy and pride to adults and children alike--that encapsulates the idea of play, which Stumpf feels is essential to all our lives.
This provocative book asks whether we might want to do something about our ever-declining levels of "comfort, hidden goodness, play, personal worth, and helping others" to make our future society a truly civilized one.

Excellent working with seller, but shipping was slow; should have told buyer how the item was being shipped and how long. Would recommend business with this seller.
An optimistic book.......2000-05-31
This book is for any designer who believes our craft is about more than making a better product...but also a better way of life. How do we improve the level of spiritual experiences that connect between a companys products or architecture and the human beings who use them. One example that Stumpf brings up is the experiences we have on airplanes. Plane travel is usually a very tiring experience for most travellers. But why does it have to be that way? A plane brings us so much closer to the sky that it might be enjoyable if telescopes were hooked up so that people can do some star gazing etc. My first reaction was "Yeah Right" to many of the examples that Stumpf illustrated. But on second thought I began to realize that Stumpfs thinking is exactly what we need in todays commercial industry. Products and services these days are created only for profit but advertised as if they will improve our quality of life. And maybe they do. But Stumpf is talking about a more spiritual "Quality of Life." The kind that gives a person memories. The kind that makes a person connect as a human being with all the creations we impose upon society. What I admire most about the book is that it dares to be optimistic. I can't say that all of the ideas mentioned in here are practical...but so what? The idea, I believe, is to get designers and architects to put more heart into their creations. To consider the spiritual functions of what we do...and not just the marketing functions. This book, I say, is a good read. Take your time reading it. Read it during a quiet rainy day while drinking some coffee. Enjoy the experience (hint. hint)
OK.......1999-01-19
I liked Mr. Stumpf's sense of humor. His reflections on our current social design standards were amusing as well as depressing. A dry read which moistened towards the end.
Fabulous.......1998-11-27
Very inspiring, full of perspective on the world of 'things' that surround us. A quick read that takes us through very profoud territory. A must for any one that is interested in understanding the way we receive products and social standards into our lives. It fully lives up to its sub title.

Customer Reviews:
No, it's not new material........2004-09-05
For the person asking. This is an affordable fairly large color reproduction of a story McCay told over consecutive weeks in newspapers during the turn of the century. Sometimes McCay would draw stand alone pages. Sometimes Little Nemo would dream a connected story over weeks - but of course he would always wake up at the end of exch strip. This is one of those. The book uses original collected color newspapers from the turn of the 1900s so the quality isn't perfect though it's still very impessive. You don't need this if you are going to get the complete collections but the cost is low and it's a perfect way to see if you enjoy this work by catching a continuing story from a high point in quality and imagination.
Good introduction.......2000-12-27
This is a good book if you want to get a feel for Little Nemo, but not if you want to have a complete collection of the strips. The artwork is beautiful and the storyline is great, unfortunately, the editor has taken out some parts of the story, so near the end it starts to become kind of clippy, so to speak.
Hmm, but is it new material?.......2000-10-15
Well, I haven't actually bought this book. I was trying to figure out whether it was material that was in the complete collection (ISBN 3-8228-6300-9), or an independant graphic novel. My only thought on that is that I recognize the cover art from the aforementioned collection, which might help some of you in deciding.
A great first step into a larger world..........1999-01-05
Windsor McCay is one of my favorite artists, and I was exuberent when I found out there was a book collecting some of Nemo's adventures. Although not as comprehensive as the more expensive "Complete" books, The Palace of Ice is a great way to see if you like Little Nemo, or not. And if you do, and own the complete Little Nemo series, I still recomend buying this book.

Alaska Statehood Story.......2005-09-02
Edna Ferber's book, Ice Palace, is a well told story of Alaska and its long journey to statehood. This book written in 1958, was just one year before Alaska did become a state.
Christine, is the granddaughter of two men who are very influential in Alaska; both who represent totally divergent points of view.
One loves Alaska for its beauty, its native people, its wildlife and all it represents as America's last frontier.
The other is interested only in making a profit from it, and retaining political power.
Through these fictional characters, Mrs. Ferber, reveals much history of Alaska and the people who inhabit it.
Though dated, it still provides the reader with an appreciation of Alaska. I understand that the book was influential in the vote outcome which allowed Alaska to become a state at long last.
A dated teenage girl's novel.......1999-07-21
ICE PALACE is probably a teenage girl's novel, as the main character is a young woman "coming of age". The pedantic "facts about Alaska" would also probably be better tolerated by a young reader, accustomed to the style from school books. However, the book was apparently written in the 1950s, and many of the facts, as well as expressions are dated. As a middle aged male, I found the novel to be weak, and I could not recommend it to another adult.

This was a great and exciting book!!.......1999-06-26
This was a great suspenseful book. You will think that you know who "did it" but you will surprised to find out who really did! It is a wonderful book that involves poisening, threats and a oylimpic competetion.
Nancy is at the Crystal Palace to find a missing inheritence.......1998-09-22
This book was very good and has many suspects. It keeps the reader on the edge of her seat. You don't know who did it, or if you think you do, it's probably wrong. I was. If you are a fan of riddles, read this book.
