Book Description
In this literary gem Vigen Guroian chronicles not merely the changing seasons but the course of his own life as he and his family move from Maryland to a new home near the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Leaving the old garden behind and cultivating another garden become an emblem of our journey through life, marked as it is by both bitter losses and sweet new blessings.
While deeply personal, The Fragrance of God vividly unfolds the great biblical themes of the grandeur of God's creation, the senses as "paths" to experiencing God, and the garden as a "place" of birth, death, and renewal.
Laced throughout with quotations from Guroian's beloved church fathers and replete with theological reflection,
The Fragrance of God will lead readers down a path of deeper insight into the creation and the Creator.

Living by Gods Law.......2007-01-11
This book is a very good edition to any reader the reads and studies the word of God. Place it next to your Bible for easy knowledge about what God says about our health.
Great book - Almost.......2006-07-31
I am not an accomplished food preparer thus I want and need all the help I can get from a recipie or recipie book. It is maddening that some of the recipies in the book (indicate only) that it is for one serving and some ( indicate only ) it will be for multiple servings but majority do not even indicate what it will serve. This is a major issue with me but probably not with practiced food preparers. Otherwise the book and principles it serves are excellent.
Great book .......2005-09-26
I was very pleased with this book as my wife & I are on a RAW diet. This book helps you to understand why we need to eat more raw foods and has some great recepies in it also.
Another extreme diet book filled with misleading, potentially harmful, information........2005-09-17
You do not have to be a clinical nutritionist or a Biblical scholar to dispell some of the erroneous information and find flaws with the recommended diet in this book.
To start with, the author's "ideal" diet which she claims is ordained by God quoting heavily from Genesis is faulted in that she includes some passages and ignores others. She manipulates what the Bible says to fit in with her diet. Especially her limitation of fats and her reasoning on avoidance of fish and meat or "flesh foods" as she calls them and their consumption in relation to longevity. Read Genesis yourself especially Genesis 1:28-31 and Genesis 9:1-5;28-29. You will clearly see that flesh foods have no effect on life expectancy (Noah lived for 350 years after God made the new covenenat with man to include eating flesh foods). Also, there is no place in the Bible God states eating fruits, nuts or seeds which are high in fat should be limited or the water we drink should be distilled removing all minerals from it.
Another major point of misleading information is what she claims is the "ideal" diet for a weaned 2 year old child: Lunch: 1/4 cup raw summer squash, 1/4 Cup raw carrot
For once in my life, I'm using a cookbook!.......2005-08-04
Eating a raw diet has been a strange change for me, but this cookbook has made it easy. The recipes are FANTASTIC. Everything I've made for myself, ultimately my family ends up eating (7 kids and a husband). They love the foods so much that I have to hide my leftovers so I have some for lunch! Then they beg me to make certain recipes again.
As with any healthfood diet, time must go into preparing the food, but it's no where near some gourmet cookbooks I've seen where the end result is tasty but terrible for you. Certainly takes more effort than opening a can of Spaghettios, but worth the effort!
Make sure to get the "text" book to go with it which describes the WHY to the diet, not just the HOW. "God's Way to Ultimate Health" by Reverand Malkamus.
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Yossi Klein Halevi, born in America and now an Israeli citizen, embarked on a spiritual quest in order to appreciate the religious dimensions of conflicts in the Middle East. Beginning in 1998, he undertook "an attempt at religious empathy" in order "to test whether faith could be a means of healing rather than intensifying the conflicts in this land." Halevi, author of the critically acclaimed Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist, chose "to pray and meditate with my Christian and Muslim fellow believers," as "a conscious refutation of the way we religious people of different faiths have always judged each other--by what we believe about God, rather than how we experience God's presence." The holy days of each religion form the structure of At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden, and Halevi's encounters with Sufi dervishes, Muslim sheiks, monks, nuns, and laypeople are entertaining, poignant, and sometimes fearsome. The stories do not separate "spirituality" from "politics"--or history, psychology, or theology. His commitment to describing an integrated experience of the many aspects of religious life helps to make the book a successful exercise in empathy, and a book of lasting literary value. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Yossi Klein Halevi's first book, Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist, a remarkable coming-of-age story, was lauded by the New York Times as being "of burning importance ... a drama central to the very soul of Jewish life." Now, in At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden, Haleví describes his unprecedented and extraordinary spiritual journey to discover, as a religious Israeli Jew, a common spiritual language with his Christian and Muslim neighbors in the Holy Land.
While religion has fueled the violent conflict plaguing the Middle East, Halevi wondered whether it could be a source of unity as well. To find the answer, he began a two-year exploration of the devotional life of Christianity and Islam. He followed their holiday cycles, befriended Christian monastics and Islamic mystics, and joined them in prayer in monasteries and mosques -- searching for wisdom and holiness in places that are usually off-limits to outsiders of other faiths.
In this gripping work, Halevi candidly reveals how he fought to resolve his own fears and anger as a Jew and came to relate to Christians and Muslims as fellow spiritual seekers. He chronicles the difficulty of overcoming obstacles -- theological, political, historical, and psychological -- that separate believers of the three monotheistic faiths. And he introduces a dynamic range of fascinating individuals attempting to reconcile the dichotomous heart of this sacred place -- a struggle central to Israel, but which resonates for us all.
Written in lyrical prose, Halevi takes his search for God into the heart of the Middle Eastern conflict. He insists on a spirituality that isn't escapist but instead confronts the wounds of history. The result is a book startlingly original and bold, one that embraces and transcends the categories of politics and faith.

An honest, humble, inspiring adventure.......2006-09-08
I just love this guy. Starting with a simple urge to connect with his neighbors, Yossi Halevi embarks on an awkward, fascinating, dangerous journey through Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. He discovers a series of surprising characters who dream, not just of peace between Jews, Muslims and Christians, but of spiritual friendship. And the story of these fragile, budding friendships becomes an adventure of almost overwhelming power.
I want to quote from one episode, where Halevi and a madcap Jew called Eliyahu Charanamrit McLean attend a mosque in Karawa village on the West Bank:
"This mosque was a family project: Everyone here belonged to the Abu-Laben clan. They were working class people; the shaykh himself was a car mechanic.
"What do the other Muslims think of you?" Eliyahu asked.
"That we're crazy," replied Saud's father. "They think we chant the name of 'Abdallah' instead of 'Allah"". Laughter.
I asked Saud what he experienced during the zakir [or dance of remembering God]. "That our hearts kept getting closer and closer to God," he said, with the Sufi vagueness I'd so often encountered from Ibrahim. ...
Ibrahim, not to be poetically outdone, added "Our souls went up to heaven like clouds".
"When you pray together," said the shaykh's father, "you form one heart".
I felt sad for this forlorn Sufi Shteibl. Here was an Islam with which we could make peace, yet it was almost absurdly perepheral. Still, maybe the fact that a handful of Muslims and Jews had danced together was enough for God to work with; perhaps He would magnify our prayers, widen the circle of ecstasy." (p. 104-105)
Halevi is realist enough to claim no easy victories. As the level of sectarian violence rises again, his network of friends retains little but hope and prayer. It's a marvelous book.
A study in courage.......2006-05-17
One problem with writing intelligent books on religion is that religion demands the author experience it. Halevi takes this difficult challenge and seeks common ground with Christians and Muslims. To find this common ground he is willing to push his boundaries, go beyond his fears to find a common ground.
In his efforts he encounters a Catholic order of religious that seeks to return to the Jewish roots of Jesus as a common ground for Jewish-Christian relations; a Catholic monk of the Melkite rite (Jerusalem rite) seeing Arab-Jewish understanding through the Arab Christian; a common ground of genocide with Armenian Christians; a common ground of love with Sufi sheiks ...
Throughout his search runs a thread of the common monotheistic underpinnings of the three major religions of Israel. A second thread is a more universal acceptance that includes the great Eastern traditions - Buddhism and Hinduism. The third thread is the history of the Jewish people and the reality of strife in Israel. Through these threads, Halevi challenges the reader to confront his or her prejudices in the political and religious arenas.
The net result is not a great book, but one I highly recommend because of the issues raised and the author's personal willingness to share his experience in addressing the issues.
Entrance to the Garden of Eden: A Jew's Search for Hope with Christians and Muslims in the Holy Land.......2005-10-08
This is a must for all ethnic groups to read.
Hope.......2005-09-10
The title is exact. Halevi is an extraordinary person: a mystic deeply rooted in his Jewish faith but who can share a common search for peace and religious experience with Christians, the historic persecutors of Jews, and with Muslims, who have now become the "enemy." I know three of the communities of Christians he shared with and the descriptions are accurate so I can assume the Muslim sections are just as fair. Anyone searching for religious and mystic truth that is non-violent but serious about faith and God will love this book.
What real faith is all about. Amazing........2005-02-14
Yossi Halevy thinks he is only writing about interfaith connections in the holy land, but in fact the most inspiring aspect of the book is the delicate portrait of his own faith in God, where this deep faith takes him, and the grace of goodwill and wisdom that it creates inside his soul.

Great resource book and help for natural healing.......2006-08-30
Speaking of my past medical history, I know these herbal remedies heal. I was diagnosed with an incurable disease of the bladder named "Interstitial Cystitis" and went to a good urologist for many years for treatment.By coincidence, my mother found this herbal book in German and told me there would be a cure in herbal science possible. My Godmother from Germany bought a tea from this book called:" Small flowered Willowrose" - I drank this tea for many months to come and I am cured because of it. I am a true believer in this and recommend this book to everyone out there who wants to get healed in a natural way without chemicals.
Our Family Bible!.......1999-06-29
My mom has one, my sister has one ,both my grandmothers have one, my aunts have one...we all have one and we swear by them! It contains detailed information and pictures of each herb, what it's good for, how to prepare it and different preparations for the same herb for different purposes such as teas and oils etc. The author who is German also shares amusing anekdotes about people and their illnesses that she has healed with herbs described in the book. This is truly one of the best herbal remedy-books I have seen. Very informative and extremely useful.

Tending the Soul's Garden
It has been said that to love another person is to see the face of God. To see the hand of God, cultivate a garden.
Gardens are places where we are up close and personal to God's daily miracles of creation, death, and rebirthlife itself. Indeed, the act of gardening can be a deeply personal experience in spiritual growth. But life, like gardening, is sometimes messy, dirty, and hard.
Digging into the struggles and joys we face daily, such as discerning God's will, coping with crushed hopes, and learning to love, Gardening Mercies provides inspiration and instruction for the seasons of our lives.
Discover how God is working in you, despite your past mistakes
Grow a deeper reverence for and friendship with God
Start the process of healing from painful moments in your life
Experience God through the power and beauty and wonder of His creation.
Gardening can be hard work. Growth takes time and effort. But as all gardeners know, the results are beautiful to see, smell, and touch. The same is true as we grow and become new creatures in Christ, and yet the results are even more beautifuleternal fruit.

REMINDS ME OF GIFTS FROM THE SEA.......2002-10-09
This author has a way with description and words. It's almost soothing to read her book. She reminds me of Anne Morrow Lindburg in her book GIFTS FROM THE SEA. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to slow down, relax and get blessed in the process.
You don't need a green thumb to enjoy this beautiful book.......2001-08-17
At first glance, Laurie Kehler's Gardening Mercies looks like another pretty gardening book--which I happen to love--but then once you enter the pretty pages, it's so much more. A wonderfully written devotional with depth and wisdom that draws the reader closer to God, but unlike many devotionals, is light on the saccharine, heavy on the 'real.' And funny, too! An example: "I used to be a high-maintenance morning person. Before I found out my thyroid was too slow, mornings were almost a battleground between my husband and me... I was like the TV character Maude on steroids." You can't get much more real than that! Thanks, Laurie, for writing such a refreshingly honest devotional that I could relate to--and for not being afraid to get your hands dirty: gardening--and life--involves hard work and deep digging before we can get to the beauty. This one has it all, even for gardeners like myself: lovely descriptions of beloved flowers--and gorgeous illustrations--spiritual probing and wisdom, candor, and great touches of humor!
Sure to bring growth in your garden and in your soul!.......2001-07-10
From a reader who has bookshelves filled with devotionals, I have to say that "Gardening Mercies" is one of my favorites. I was pleasantly surprised by the heart-felt stories, the deep spiritual applications, and especially by Kehler's honesty concerning the matters of the soul. As a wanna-be gardener, Kehler's book gave me even more appreciation for the flowers that I tend. And as a Christian striving for a closer relationship with Christ, I am reminded that the Lover of my soul can see a deeper beauty in me than I can imagine and will faithfully tend His own.
See God through new eyes.......2001-07-02
Creatively and candidly written, each chapter led me to a deeper understanding of the Lord through the eyes of a gardener. Laurie takes us on a personal journey through many gardens and lives giving us a new view and opening our hearts to God's care for us. It is a refreshing look into other real lives with weeds, bugs, pruning to be done, as well as beauty and strength to be enjoyed.
This book is well-written to reach a diverse audience in that it is eye-opening, instructional and interesting no matter what your spiritual stage of life. I found it hard to put down, getting quickly hooked into the next chapter from the first glance. I also found its depth drawing me back to read the previous chapter again to savor or chew on a thought or truth realized.
Reading Laurie's book is like listening to a good friend, it is personal and candid. Being a beginning gardener myself, I also really enjoyed learning a few gardening tips and advice. I highly recommend taking a walk through Gardening Mercies and sharing it with a friend.
Gorgeous book and great gift idea.......2001-06-29
Unlike other gardening books which only discuss plants, Ms. Kehler talks in a really warm and personal way about struggles we all face- disappointment, frustration with God about things not turning out the way we'd like etc. and ties them into her love of gardening. The floral engravings sprinkled throughout the book are lovely too.
This was really unique and wonderful--BUY it!!

Book Description
Gardens of the Gods reveals the symbolic language of garden design, exploring the gardens of China with their moon gates and im-mortal rocks, the Zen gardens of Japan, and the paradise gardens of Islam. It even looks at Renaissance Italy with their richly mythological imagery, the landscaped parks of England, the gardens of New Harmony in the United States and some striking modern examples of symbolic gardens, including the Tarot Garden of the sculptress Niki de Saint Phalle in Italy. This beautifully illustrated book also includes a chapter with suggestions for creating a 'garden of meaning' and a selected catalog of plants with sym-bolic or mythological associations.
Book Description
Grieving after the death of a beloved daughter, Rabbi Balfour Brickner struggled with his faith while preparing a flowerbed. One day the rabbi found himself writing down the thoughts that came to him as he turned the soil, and observing natures abundant examples of order and renewal, miracles and beauty, Rabbi Brickner found his faith returning like a garden in spring. Using the garden as a sanctuary and springboard, Rabbi Brickner considers the lessons to be learned from the tasks of caring for the land, the wonder of a garden in full bloom, and the connections between Biblical teachings and botanical life. FINDING GOD IN THE GARDEN is a passionate, witty, and provocative celebration of mature religious faith derived through nature, reason, and the joys of everyday work.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting perspective .......2007-08-29
I purchased this book based on the Amazon reader reviews and although in some ways the book didn't live up to some of the accolades, in other ways, it did provide some interesting food for thought. The author is a Rabbi; I am a Christian who was brought up in a traditional middle of the road denomination. Going into the book, I knew there would be differences of opinion, yet I'm always interested in another's perspective, and this book does provide that in an very readable, charming, and insightful way.
I'm also not a gardener, but that didn't prevent me from seeing the connection between what grows and dies in the garden and our everyday lives. Most times, I felt the author did an excellent job of comparison (although there were a few places that it seemed as if the "garden comparions" were just added at the end of a straightforward theological essay).
Although this book may be directed to those of the Jewish faith, I would recommend it to anyone looking for some spiritual food for thought. Rabbi Brickner has real respect for a wide spectrum of other spiritual leaders and writers. In short, this isn't something that changed my life, but it is a book that I would go back and reread certain chapters when I was in the mood for "something short and interesting."
So Meaningful For Out Times!.......2005-09-12
This is an incredible book that speaks to many issues we confront today -- from the meaning of life and death to sex and love -- to social activisim -- with a little gardening as well!
Offering humor and wisdom Brickner welcomes us into his world - and shows us how to better manage and live our own lives with more meaning and purpose.
A Delightful Blossom!.......2003-05-04
This book was an unexpected pleasure to read. When I first saw it, there was some hesitancy on my part to read it. I thought it would be filled with cliche metaphors, but in reality, there was a deep spiritual wisdom that blossomed with the unfolding of each page. Rabbi Brickner makes beautiful comparisions betweeen that which we have in our guardians, on the one hand, and that which we have in our hearts and spirits as Jews on the other. I became enlightened on both matters of botany and the Bible. This book was a true joy and will be satisfying to anyone who reads it.
a perfect companion.......2003-04-22
Highly recommended ...
FINDING GOD IN THE GARDEN is for everyone who digs in this earth of Eden, who has ever wondered what that First Garden & its First Gardeners might have been like.
A man in the autumn of his life, speaks about his decades as a spiritual coach, as an interpreter of things Biblical & religious & as a newcomer to gardening both in the micro- & macrocosmic sense.
From how sex became sinful & how it never was meant to be; of how weeds are the manifestations unwanted evils & how we humans do differ from our animal cousins. Of how to think about God within the context of our lives as well as how to think of the land as a primal learning place.
Woven between Rabbi Brickner's memories of gardens he has tended, are his musings of philosophies both Judaic & Christian as he playfully & seriously explores the meaning of soul & prayer, of compost & death, free will & miracles, fertilizers & sacred human activities, of sitting & thinking, healing.
Easily accessible, charmingly written, Rabbi Brickner has poured into this gentle & fascinating book, a host of kind wisdom & offers us bouquet after bouquet of joyous soulful & healing thoughts.
Very well done, one of those books you will keep for each season of your garden & your life.

garden of the gods.......2004-11-29
This series is one of the best I've ever read. The descriptions of the island, and especially the people, are done with a deft touch of humor that makes me laugh out loud. I love the insight into Lawrence Durrell - to get a younger brother's perspective on the man T.S. Eliot once described as having written "the first piece of work by a new English writer to give me any hope for the future of prose fiction" is a rare treat.
Out of Print? Hello!.......2000-12-19
How such a wonderfully heartwarming, funny, wacky book could be out of print, is beyond me. I have read all three books in the 'Corfu series' again and again. Like the reviewer before me, the description of the different wines stands out in my memory, as does the description of the entire birthday buffet for that matter. Gerald Durrel is an extremely gifted writer, and has an excellent sense of humor. His portrayal of his family is wildly funny, and one can't help but fall in love with them, even the irritating Larry! I highly recommend this book, but read 'My Family and other Animals' and 'Birds Beasts and Relatives' first. This is a deeply touching series, for adults and children alike, and there is a good laugh on practically every page. I hope someone comes to their senses and reprints this book.
A wonderful read.......2000-02-18
A wonderfully funny book set in sunny Corfu replete with Durrell's hilarious family anecdotes, convoluted Greek imbroglios and enchanting descriptions. The description of different wines is scintillating.
Please reprint "The Garden of the Gods" by Gerald Durrell.......1999-12-15
"The Garden of the Gods" by Gerald Durrell is an immensely funny biographical work telling anecdotes from the author's childhood on the island of Corfu. More to the point, it is the third part of the trilogy which begins with "My Family and Other Animals" and continues with "Birds, Beasts and Relatives". Can anyone explain why the first part of this trilogy remains widely available, while the other two books, which are just as good, if not better, are now out of print?
A Jewel of Book!.......1997-08-01
The thrid book in The My Family series and it lives up to the previous two. Lots of nature, sun, sea, olive groves with a cast of mad family members and Greeks involved in all sorts of wonderfully funny situations. A must

Very open honest dialogue with readers.......2005-07-05
I really recomend this book to read for those of you who really wonder wheather God does speak or not to human beings nowadays. If you seek God and wonder how does he speak, then this book is certainly for you. Most of it has to do with the author himself: seeking, sincere. James shares with his readers his heart: his lifestory, his failures, his pains, and his victories. And how in all of his battles, he was supported and led by God's voice in so many various ways, sometimes really odd ways. You will be encouraged after reading this book to be open and expect God talk to you and not always with audiable voice, but with....Read this volume which i found one of the most sincere and honest christian books i have ever read.
God Still Speaks To Us Today.......2003-09-11
I came to know James Ryle through Promise Keepers. Then I later watched his testimony on "Life Today" w/James Robison. So I already knew about him.
While I ws familiar with his preaching, I had no idea that he had written books, too(3 to date). This one was his first. It had been out 10 years by the time I read it this year. I was more curious than anything whe I saw the title. Granted, the title and cover are both what I'd call weird. But the book is anything but weird.
In the Bible, the are many examples of how God speaks to people. All too often Christians get the idea that God speaking to people and God speaking to us through other people is outdated or is "Old Testament stuff." In short, that notion is wrong. James Ryle clearly points out that God speaks to people even today. He uses many examples from his own life to illustrate this. I can't say I have a favorite story that he shares from his life because he shares so many in this book. But in sharing his dreams and visions from God, it helped to make his point about about how and why God still speaks to us today.
After reading this book, I don't look at God the same or how he speaks to me and those around me. It's caused me to re-examine my walk with the Lord. God bless you, James Ryle!
Peace, be still, and know that I am God........2002-03-08
As a result of many questions of our Pastor, in Weatherford Texas,Does God still speak to us? He prepared a series of sermons entitled "Listening to God", and the numerous ways He speaks. The reference Book he recomended was HIPPO IN THE GARDEN.
I would recomend to anyone searching for a closer walk with the diety of your choosing. listen for God and be blessed.
Wonderful book for those unsure seekers who long for God........2001-04-20
I read this book when I found a copy in the library of our campus ministry "LifeHouse" here at East Central University in Ada. I was all but blown away by the fact that Ryle, rather than being a dispensationalist (i. e. "Miracles and anything supernatural from God passed away when the apostles died"), not only affirms the fact that God, as the all-powerful Creator, can speak to us any way He wants--but he also presents a hope so wildly powerful it made me temporarily short of breath to think about: GOD _WANTS_ TO SPEAK TO _US!_ That realization ignited a hunger in me that has only intensified as the weeks have passed. To make a long review short--get this book and read it. You won't regret what lies beyond its back cover!
Hippo does not dissapoint!.......2000-07-06
What a unique an excellent book "Hippo" is! If you have ever heard James Ryle in person, he speaks like he writes, in an amusing, simple yet profound manner. That is exactly how he comes across in this book. He tackles a very, very difficult subject with story, witt, and lots of scripture (that is very appreciated). Most of the contents of this book came as a fresh breeze of new insight. How very much we as Christians need to allow God to be God in our lives and speak to us how He sees fit! This is what this book addresses and succeeds at relaying. That's why I highly recommend this book to you if you are looking for fresh insight to having a one-on-one relationhip with God. For, God does speak today, in a variety of ways! What is He saying to you?
