4 out of 5 stars The Great Book of Guns: An Illustrated History of Military, Sporting, and Antique Firearms.......2007-01-18

This book was a gift for Christmas for my grandson. He said he likes it very much. He called me in Arizona to thank me for it, I figure it is what he wanted. I guess it's fine. As long as he's happy, that's all I care.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful photos, but not much else.......2006-03-03

The photos are great! There was little information to really tell about each gun pictured.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book of Guns, Indeed!.......2006-01-13

This book looks sweet on our coffee table. The pictures are beautiful- especially the ones of antique rifles. My knowledge of firearms has greatly increased just by reading it in my spare time. There is fascinating history about guns that I had never heard of previously. I like the way the book is organized by firearm type and country of origin. I'm truly glad I purchased this book.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Historical Review but lacking modern details.......2004-11-23

I have been learning a lot about modern handguns, and I wanted a book that would give me some history of guns, how their operation has evolved, and an overview of the types of handguns in existance. This book is definitely interesting and fun to flip through, and has some great photos. I liked the photos of the older flint-lock pistols, pepperbox revolvers, and guns of the old-west. Some of the oddities were especially interesting, including the Japanese sword-gun (not a bayonet, but a full-size sword with a handle that was a gun). Also, I liked the WWII Liberator, made by GM to be cheap, easy to build, and to dropped in mass on Germany for partisans to get. However, I felt the book was lacking in a few key areas. I understand that the author can't possibly include every gun ever. But why are there so many examples of home-made guns throughout the years, and no entry for the Glock? The Glock was a revolutionary gun, with an interesting history of unknown Gaston Glock with no gunmaking experience making a gun for the Austrian army that bucked much conventional thinking regarding guns. Who would think a plastic frame would make a reliable gun? Now, every gun store you go into is packed with Glocks, and it is the favorite sidearm of many LEOs including police and FBI. Most CCW books I read recommend the Glock. Half the new guns I see today are essentially Glock copies (Springfield XD, Steyr, S&W SW, etc). The only mention of the Glock in this book is in a side-panel about SWAT teams, where it mentions that SWAT teams use Glocks among other weapons.

This book was an interesting read, but I wonder what criteria the author picked for each gun he included. I would have also liked more diagrams, showing how each gun works and the progression of various styles of gun. I give the book 4 stars since it was fun to flip through, and makes a good coffee table book, but for serious study of firearm history, you might need to go elsewhere.

Book Description

Prospecting, the process of contacting the right people with the idea of converting them to customers, is a critically important activity in the sales process. Since the stock market decline in 2000, financial professionals-many for the first time-are finding they need to prospect for customers.

Author and financial services professional Scott Kimball advocates that reps cut their book, or client base, dramatically and follow his proprietary prospecting process. Called the ""Top Gun"" method after the renowned U.S. Navy flight school, this process provides individuals with the strategies and tactics they need to perform at levels usually never reached by the average financial salesperson.

Kimball's Top Gun Prospecting for Financial Professionals is the only book to focus on prospecting for the financial services professional. It covers all aspects of the process, including contact management systems, lists, advertising, cold calling, direct mail, networking, seminars, referrals, the Internet, attitude, and time management.

Readers will learn how to:

* Execute and track the success of the four major prospecting process components.

* Identify new, rich sources for clients.

* Maximize the efficiency of the filtering/qualifying process, ensuring that salespeople meet only with highly qualified, ""ripe"" prospects.

* Approach prospects so they agree to a meeting to discuss their financial situations.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Helpful but unrealistic.......2006-06-03

As a financial advisor who built his book partially from cold-calling, it was refreshing to see that somebody else understands that it is a powerful business builder. However, a lot of what I read appeared to be unrealistic. For example, the author claims to coldcall everyday, yet, has been in the business for 20 plus years and limits his practice to 50 households.

4 out of 5 stars Cold Calling is Still the weapon of choice in the 21st Ceuntury.......2005-06-23

I read this book in one sitting. I think it is remarkable, not for the techniques (nothing new), but that cold calling is so highly endorsed by someone who specializes in the high roller client base. I believe that the financial services field is the Army Ranger unit of professional selling. These guys make their living off a group of people extremely savvy and resistant to sales people.

His motivation is remarkable and made me want to get back on the phone. I appreciate his staightforward style and his comparison of cold calling with other techniques such as seminar selling and mail out leads.

I highly recommend it.

Book Description

"More dramtatic than fiction...THE GUNS OF AUGUST is a magnificent narrative--beautifully organized, elegantly phrased, skillfully paced and sustained....The product of painstaking and sophisticated research."
CHICAGO TRIBUNE
Historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Barbara Tuchman has brought to life again the people and events that led up to Worl War I. With attention to fascinating detail, and an intense knowledge of her subject and its characters, Ms. Tuchman reveals, for the first time, just how the war started, why, and why it could have been stopped but wasn't. A classic historical survey of a time and a people we all need to know more about, THE GUNS OF AUGUST will not be forgotten.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Guns of August.......2007-09-15

If you have any interest in World War I the Guns of August is a must read. This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for years--I know this because the price on the jacket is under $20.00. I was always concerned that the book would be a slow and plodding work with too much time invested in describing the strategies of the various battles.. Yes, there are varied descriptions of the various August 1914 battles, but they read like a novel, are essential in understanding the futility of the War and the superficial understanding of the world that England, France, Russia, and even the United States had in 1914.

Barbara Tuchman is an excellent writer--it is know accident that she won the Pulitzer Price for this book. Surprisingly, this is a quick read and the 400 pages (hard cover) go very quickly. One develops a keen understanding of the mindset of the French, English, and Germans before and during the war. Tuchman gives fair treatment to the French, English, and Germans. It is not surprising that the war aims of the Germans do not seem to differ much between WWI and WWII. . Tuchman paints a portrait of pre war Europe with its artificial entangling alliances as a powder keg ready to explode. As you read the story of the first month of the War you are struck with the overarching theme, which I think is true of most wars, that while the powers sough an early overwhelmingly decisive battle you feel the foreboding by those in the know that if timetables are not met this will be a long and stalemated conflict. August of 1914 certainly sets the stage for the remainder of 20th century history. This is a great book. I do not know why I waited so long to take it off my shelf

5 out of 5 stars Guns of August.......2007-09-12

Super account of the first days and campaigns of WWI.

"Guns of August" is particularly good in its ability to capture the mindsets of generals on both sides. The account of the violation of Belgian neutrality and the civilians' taking up arms to defend their nation at all costs was especially effective (and well-researched).

5 out of 5 stars A great start.......2007-09-12

For those of you just beginning to explore the Great War and it's causes this book is the place to start. Tuchman's ability to weave together the all to human story of the mistakes and blunders committed by egotistical, naive, and often downright stupid leaders, still resonates clearly today. This book should be required reading for all politicians and State Department officials.

1 out of 5 stars Strong anti-German bias.......2007-08-27

This book has excellent military analysis and I can see why it has many admirers. However, I purchased it in order to learn more about the origins of World War I and was profoundly disappointed. The analysis is quite limited and dominated by a heavy anti-German bias. Of course all works of history will show the author's bias to some degree, but parts of this book read like a melodrama, with Germany as the villain and Belgium as the hero.

Studying the start of World War I gives us an opportunity to learn better ways of preventing future catastrophic wars. When the analysis of German war aims relies on "the hatred of a barbaric culture against anything civilized," that opportunity is lost.

5 out of 5 stars An August Book.......2007-08-23

While it's been a while since I read this, I clearly remember that it was superb. Tuchman's ability to bring history to life is unsurpassed.

I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone with the least interest in the subject of WWI. While just using the war's first full month, BT gives us a clear view of that world and its people who became involved in the incredible machine of death that was The Great War.

I would also suggest Keegan's "The First World War" for a fuller description of the war in its entirety.

BOOK IS ALL I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE! WELL-WRITTEN, COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE MAN AND HIS COMPANY, HIS DREAMS AND IDEAS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS. IT'S INTRIGUING TO READ THE BACKGROUND OF A PERSON WHO HAS CREATED SO MUCH AND BEEN A PIONEER IN THE AMERICAN FIREARMS INDUSTRY AND, JUST AS INTERESTING, TO UNDERSTAND THE MINDSET AND DETERMINATION AND SACRIFICE IT TOOK TO REACH HIS PLACE IN HISTORY. AND, THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE TECHNOLOGY AND ART OF STURM RUGER FIREARMS IS FASCINATING. REALLY GLAD I BOUGHT THE BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Addition to any Gun Collectors Library.......2007-04-06

In 1949, just after World War II, all of the gun manufacturing companies faced a problem of selling guns in the commercial market. The Government had extensive stocks of guns like Endfields, Springfields, Colt .45's and of course any number of foreign guns and were beginning to sell these guns on the commercial market. It was obviously a stupid time to go into the gun manufacturing business.

In 1949 Bill Ruger entered the gun business with one gun being manufactured by a very small company. The gun was the Ruger.22 Standard Pistol which was an instant hit and is still in production as the Mark III. Every few years since then there has been a new gun from the folk at Ruger, each of which has pioneered new design principles that has made nearly all of the guns a success.

In this book, R.L. Wilson has produced a masterpiece of a book that describes all of the guns produced by the company as well as a history of the company and the man. It's an excellent addition to any gun lovers library.

Book Description

The Top Gun business model focuses on working with high net worth clientele.

In Top Gun Financial Sales, leading investment advisor D. Scott Kimball suggests that by dropping 80 percent of your clients and never taking on more than 50 clients financial salespeople can substantially increase their profits and production. Using the same principles taught to United States fighter pilots at Top Gun, Kimball created the Top Gun Sales Business Model. It is a model that accentuates the importance of working closely with a few high net worth individuals in lieu of trying to half heartedly serve thousands of smaller clients.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time or Your Money.......2003-11-25

This is a re-hash of the author's previous book. Trust me, if you've been in the business longer than a year, you've heard all of this before. In this case, the revolutionary idea is "having a small number of very affluent clients." Wow! What a novel idea!!! The title of the book should be 'How to Make A Bunch of Money Off Poor Schmucks Trying to Make a Bunch of Money.' A much better book is Duncan MacPherson's 'The Promise of The Future.' http://www.paretosystems.com/index.html is the web address. This guy should be ashamed.

4 out of 5 stars Some Ideas Unrealistic, But Sharpens Your Focus - Good Read.......2003-11-10

I have been in the financial services industry for almost 16 years, and have seen and read just about everything out there. I came upon Kimball's book after reading an excerpt in one of the industry's trade publications. It piqued my interest, so I went for the book.

Going after only those clients who would yield commissions of $250,000.00 per year or better is unrealistic - especially if those are the *only* clients you're seeking. It's fine to go "elephant hunting" (as it is commonly called) while building your client base with (what Kimball would call) "smaller" accounts of $500,000.00 to $5 million in assets. But to cut out 80% of your book when you're feeding a family of three or four or more is not realistic nor is it recommended.

By the same token, I agree 100% with Kimball that it is imperative to elminate clients and prospects who waste your time. Time is your greatest asset in this business, and you cannot afford to lose a single moment to an individual who does not want to either pay you or unconditionally accept your advise for a fee.

While I disagree with Kimball's philosophy regarding account size, shaving your book (I do - although not as drastically as depicted herein), or the number of accounts you should have, many of the ideas he brings forth (while not new) are fantastic when it comes to refining your focus regarding what you need to do day in and day out.

I think the book is worth it simply for the latter. All in all, a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Top Flight Advice.......2003-08-07

This advisor lays out some of the best thinking in the business. Really helps get you focused and think about your business in entirely different way. As you can see from the reviews below, some people just don't get it and never will, which Kimball admits in his book is one of the biggest issues he encounters - the inability of some people to accept responsibility for thier position in life and do something about it. I suggest everyone buy the book who is in the business - if you do 1/2 of what this guy says you need to do every day, you're business can't help but go up. My guess is that we'll encounter the reader from Cleveland at the counter at MacDonalds before the year is out.

1 out of 5 stars Would have given zero stars 00000.......2003-07-28

This book is a bunch of old hash. Has this advisor really done what he has written. If he is talking with only people who can give him $25,000 annually in fees or commissions, wouldn't you think his average account size is $2.5 at 1% ROA. So only 40 accounts to do a million. He stated in am email "When we are in a building mode, we are seeing as many as 40-60 new prospects every month, face to face. That is almost 3 appointments a day. When do you have time to call. I asked him a question via email about a script to use and received the following:..."We call them on the phone, identify ourselves, and ask them if they would have a half hour to meet with us in the next week or so. this makes them usually ask us why. So we tell them." I ask is this advice worth the asking price with a follow-up book on prospecting. I think NOT.

5 out of 5 stars Ideas that Work.......2003-05-01

I have read virtually every book dealing with how to grow as an advisor. This book is at or near the very top.
Many large firms are good at telling advisors WHAT to do but not HOW to do it. Mr. Kimball shares his experience and ideas, that given time will work. Any advisor, like Kimball, that has reinvented his business several times obviously understands how to find the money.

5 out of 5 stars One of The Best War Novels ever Written.......2002-12-21

An amazing book ,it completely encompasses all the possible attributes of avery good novel.Highly thrilling and explosive, it starts of with a bang and carries on like an Express Train. A must read , is very difficult to put down.
(Personally I have read the book around 75 times and can still read it with the same enthusiasum as though it is the first time.)

4 out of 5 stars The classic war adventure story.......2002-07-17

I read this book as a teenager at the recommendation of a neighbor, a former English teacher. The book is enthralling account of what would now be considered "special forces" in World War II secretly landing on a German controlled island in the Mediteranian, crossing the island and eventually attacking the huge in-cliff gun implacements at Navarone. On the way they encounter various problems and surprises that must be dealt with. Highly recommended for teenagers (and adults) with an interest in adventure, the military or war history.

4 out of 5 stars MacLean at his early best - great stuff!.......2001-07-03

Guns of Navarone was my introduction to Alistair MacLean a couple of decades back and what an introduction it was! A disparate team, each member picked for his particular expertise, united only by their enmity with the Germans, is deployed to attempt a near impossible task. The British sea borne retreat from the Aegean islands is prevented by the gun battery on Navarone that commands the sea route. Assault by air or sea is impossible and the land route to destroy the battery involves climbing a rock face that even the best rock climbers shudder at - but there is no other route! The team assembles, bonds as it approaches the deployment point (despite individual irritants) and makes the attempt. The outcome of course is successful but in spinning the yarn MacLean takes the reader on a roller coaster. From the calm of the Aegean cruise to the split-second timing of the finale, from the crude pettiness of small minded individuals, to the unsung heroism of a dying man, from the stereotyped Nazi villain to an individual's battle to overcome fear, MacLean holds the reader in thrall.

Force 10 merits a mixed review. Though billed as a sequel to Guns, it is actually a sequel to the movie version, which added the usual Hollywood froth to the book, and hence is a bit disorienting for the reader who has not seen the movie. Based in what used to be Yugoslavia, our team of heroes, now somewhat abridged, attempts a brilliant feint to fool the Nazis as to the direction of the main Allied attack into Europe. The feint also has a significant local impact of course. Again an excellent thriller (my only real beef is the discontinuity with the Guns novel) and in fact both Guns and Force 10 are MacLean at his early best, when his novels were concise doses of thrilling action. Among his early strengths were high quality dialog and terrific descriptions, especially of events of nature like storms and floods. Excellent suspense for the most part, fast paced action, believable yet wondrous storyline and gripping prose. Good for an air or train journey or even vacation reading.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding - the 'original' mission impossible!.......2001-06-04

I first read 'Guns' about thirty five years ago. Thought it was great then, but enjoy it even more now. Some people find it simple; to me it is concise and focused. Longer is not necessarily better. Unbelievable? Only if you know nothing about what has actually happened in war. Truth is stranger than fiction. I don't want to give anything away, but I especially like how Alistair Maclean conveyed the feeling of deceptive peace rapidly changing to incredible violence during the boat journey to the island of Navarone. I once would have thought that the characters were somewhat sterotypical and larger than life, but when I served two years as a paratrooper in the 82d Airborne Division I found that some sterotypes are based on fact. What I enjoy even more now are the descriptions and the mental pictures that are conjured up of the islands and natural settings that the action is occurring in. I say this is the original 'Mission Impossible" because the storyline of the small team of highly trained professionals taking on the impossible mission has been done many times since('Dirty Dozen', for example), but I personally don't know of any story that pre-dates 'Guns'. I enjoyed the movie as well, but I find myself wondering why they had to give it the 'Hollywood' treatment and tamper with such an outstanding action tale. As far as 'Force 10', it is also an entertaining read, but not in the same league as 'Guns'. Still, a nice package for the money, well worth it!

5 out of 5 stars "Guns" rocks; "Force 10" is weaker but okay.......2000-12-21

Thriller writer Alistair MacLean hit the big time with "The Guns of Navarone," his second novel, in 1957. It was made into a very successful movie with Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, and David Niven in the starring roles. The idea of the secret commando team consisting of a number of specialized operatives (Cpt. Mallory -- rock climber extraordinaire; Andrea -- incredibly strong, lethal fighter; Cpl. Miller -- explosives expert; Petty Ofc. Brown -- engineer and radio expert; Lt. Stevens -- rock climber) with a suicidal mission was duplicated in numerous incarnations ranging from "The Dirty Dozen" to "Mission: Impossible" (the TV series).

"The Guns of Navarone" is a fantastic adventure/war novel. It's tight and tense throughout, and there's an edge to it that is missing from a number of MacLean's later works. It comes across as more realistic than the fun to read "Where Eagles Dare."

The basic plot of "Guns" is that the, during World War II, the Germans have recaptured from the Allies a number of Greek islands; the last one left will be taken over soon, dooming over 1000 Allied soldiers. The British would evacuate the soliders, except they can't get through a channel covered by the Guns of Navarone. All previous aerial attacks on the guns have failed. So Mallory and company are sent on a mission to approach the island of Navarone by boat, climb a sheer wall face, infiltrate the German fortress, and blow up the guns.

"Force 10" is the sequel to "Guns," written eleven years later. It picks up from the ending of the movie, not the novel, so characters who were in the book but not the movie disappear. This time, there's another mission, and Mallory, Andrea, and Miller are paired with three young soldiers who are more eager and less experienced. It too has an edginess to it, but it's not as thrilling as "Guns."

Note that the movie version of "Force 10" starring Harrison Ford, Robert Shaw, and Edward Fox is based on the book in name only (well, except for one fight scene, sort of). Andrea isn't even in the movie. So don't expect the book to be anything like the movie. (Which may be good or bad depending on what you thought of the movie.)

In sum, these are prime examples of MacLean working at his peak. You can't go wrong here.

Certainly "The 50-Gun Ship" is not a book for the reader only casually interested in the Age of Sail. But for someone who wants to delve deep into the more obscure corners of the world of the Royal Navy during the 18th and early 19th Centuries, this book is a worthwhile addition to the library. 50-gun ships suffered from being neither fish nor fowl, being too small for the line of battle and too large to serve as frigates, and are usually neglected in histories of the era. However, they did see considerable service and Winfield's book fills in the void in the historical record. And there is a bonus here for fan's of Patrick O'Brian and his hero, Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy. One of Jack's least favorite commands, the "Horrible Old Leopard", is prominently featured in this volume, including meticulously detailed cutaway drawings and hull plans.

      Book Description

For those with an interest in American history and sporting, here's a fascinating, authoritative look at some of the most famous guns of the Wild West, drawn from the collection of the Cody Firearms Museum of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. Known as "the Smithsonian of the West," this grand museum complex is home to many treasures related to the history, art, and ethnology of the American West. Following the success of our previous Courage title The Civil War Catalog, another copiously illustrated hardcover format focused on historic weapons and equipment, this beautifully photographed new volume showcases more than 50 of the actual weapons used by some of the most famous western legends, from Lewis and Clark to Buffalo Bill Cody, Theodore Roosevelt, and John "Jeremiah" Johnson.

5 out of 5 stars Slim, Colorful Volume About the Guns that Won The West.......2006-01-30

The curator of the firearms museum of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, David Kennedy, has written a masterful but all too slim volume about the guns that won the Wild West.

Included here are the Sharps Buffalo Rifle used in great effect in the tragic decimation of the buffalo, the LeMat Revolver and Carbine, used in varying degrees of success by the Confederacy during the Civil War, the 1866 "Trapdoor" Springfields, which were used by Custer's men at the Big Horn, the "pepperbox" pistols (so small they could fit in a pepperbox...and sometimes so dangerous even to the user, as all four shots could go off even if the owner intended on firing only one), the oh-so-familiar Colt Navy Revolvers - used mainly by Army Forces! (I have a replica of Confederate 1860 Navy Colt in my possession), and so many more.

Kennedy has also opined that Custer and his men were done in by sheer numbers of Sioux and Cheyenne, not that the single-shot weapons used by the 7th Cavalry, or that the majority of Braves had repeating rifles. In fact, according to Kennedy, only 30-50% of the Sioux and Cheyenne even possessed firearms. Custer and his men were done in chiefly by the bow, the arrow, and muzzle-loading trade guns.

Kennedy also adds interesting and intriguing vignettes about the owners and users of the guns of the Wild West, from George Custer to Buffalo Bill to Gary Cooper, from Frederick Remington to Dick Cheney, the notorious - Wild Bill Hickok, John Wesley Hardin, and William "The Kid" Bonney, and the great - Annie Oakley.

My only problem is that the volume, while chock full of facts and data, and very informative trivia, is too slim - and does not enough period illustrations. Still, it is deserving of a five-star review.

Required reading for those visiting the wonderful "Guns and Gamblers" exhibition at the Desert Caballeros Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona.
