Book Description

Each week about fifty New Yorker cartoonists submit ten ideas, yielding five hundred cartoons for no more than twenty spots in the magazine. Arguably the most brilliant single-panel-gag cartoonists in the world create a bunch of cartoons every week that never see the light of day.

These rejects were piling up in the dusty corners of studios all over the country. Sam Gross, who has been contributing since 1962, has more than 12,000 rejected cartoons. (Seriously. He's been numbering every single cartoon he's ever submitted to The New Yorker since the very beginning.) Enter editor Matthew Diffee. He tapped his fellow cartoonists, asking them to rescue these hilarious lost gems. From the artists' stacks of all-time favorite rejects, Diffee handpicked the standouts -- the cream of the crap -- and created The Rejection Collection, a place where good ideas go when they die. Too risqué, silly, or weird for The New Yorker, the cartoons in this book offer something no other collection has: They have never been seen in print until now.

With a foreword by New Yorker cartoon editor Robert Mankoff that explains the sound judgment, respectability, and scruples not found anywhere in these pages, and handwritten questionnaires that introduce the quirky character of each artist, The Rejection Collection will appeal to fans of The New Yorker...and to anyone with a slightly sick sense of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-09-27

This book is a must have for those who love New Yorker cartoons. They are even more amusing than some cartoons that are published, however, they are definitely not appropriate for all magazine viewers!!!

2 out of 5 stars Rejected With Good Reason.......2007-09-23

I'm a fan of New Yorker cartoons and would be the first to congratulate the editorial staff on the fine job it's done these eighty years in discovering new talent, employing recognized masters like Charles Addams and Peter Arno, and knowing which cartoons fit the style and tone of the celebrated publication. The editors were wise to give most of the cartoons here in The Rejection Collection a big thumbs down. Sure, there are some concepts in this collection I liked and was surprised they weren't included in the magazine (Pat Byrnes' material most of all, the Marchetto quip on page 95, which was hilarious, and the Tom Cheney illustration on page 114, too) but mostly what's here is a gathering of gross, unfunny, perverse and mocking drawings that the readers of the New Yorker did fine without seeing at all. A much better collection would have dug into the vaults and let us see some rejected pieces that went back decades instead of just the 2000's. I understand a second volume of rejects is coming out this year and I hope it's not the letdown this one was.

5 out of 5 stars You MUST have this book!.......2007-09-19

This is a hilarious and sometimes screamingly funny collection of cartoons that were deemed "too resque, silly, or weird" for publication. In other words, right up my alley.

As big as this volume is, it represents a small percentage of the thousands of brilliant items not fit for the New Yorker, and is absolutely over-the-top funny!

5 out of 5 stars Not to be read in public..........2007-09-05

....unless you don't mind being seen cackling, gasping for breath with beer
running out of your nose.
You already know that these are cartoons by New Yorker cartoonists that were
rejected by that magazine. If you're a regular reader of the New Yorker, this book
will be a revelation: the difference between these cartoons and the ones that get
published is not just that these are much funnier. The difference lies in the
exuberance and boundary-pushing that's the hallmark or true art. Or at least
true cartoons. There's less of the insider-joke smarminess that congratulates you
for being hip enough to get what the joke is. Seeing what the magazine didn't
want to publish has diminished my respect for it just a bit. (I'm not cancelling my
subscription though.)

There's the cartoon of the couple sitting on a couch. Through the window, we see
the full moon. The man is visibly turning into a werewolf. The woman observes:
"You're lucky. I'm turning into my mother." Then there's the Roadkill Zoo and the
Santa with a craving for venison and the ventriloquist who getting drunk while
his dummy barfs and. . . . . . .

_Lynn Hoffman, author of bang BANG, which was rejected once or twice itself

5 out of 5 stars A Funny Twist on the Usual New Yorker Cartoons.......2007-08-01

The New Yorker cartoons are always fun to read. This book of rejects contains many that can be categorized as "Things you think about but would never dare put on paper." They are laugh-out-loud funny. In addition to the rejected cartoons, each cartoonist was asked to complete a questionnaire, including his/her explanation of what an ink blob reminded him/her of. A most enjoyable read.

It's easy to dismiss Be Here Now as the relic of a whacked-out '60s acid tripper. Paging through the center section of the book, with its inch-high print and psychedelic drawings, you come across lines like:
Magic Theatre
For madmen only
price of admission
your
mind
Then you turn to the first page of the book, and you are suddenly sucked into the story of a Harvard psychiatrist who has reached the pinnacle of success, discovers the mind-expanding powers of acid, and ends up trooping through India with a 23-year-old holy man from Laguna Beach, California. In the story, you see all the trappings of your own life and begin to wonder if India might hold the answers after all. Before booking your ticket, turn to the last section of the Be Here Now, "Cookbook for a Sacred Life." Ram Dass saves you the trouble by proffering a sober introduction to the basics of Hindu religion. Although he still can't resist CAPITAL LETTERS, he has done his homework, presenting a whole range of concepts and practices having to do with yoga postures, meditation, renunciation, dying, and sexual energy. So, for the most part, Be Here Now stands the test of time, and if you can entertain the center section in a retro kind of a spirit, it might be just what you're looking for: "The opposite of craving is saying, baby, this is the way it is, yeah, OK, here and now, this is it. I ACCEPT THE HERE & NOW FULLY." --Brian Bruya

3 out of 5 stars Ambivalent.......2007-08-24

Richard Alpert telling his life story is alright. It's even instructive. And putting an emphasis on reverence, devotion, and love is great. The part that I like is that he DOES tell about the existence of a path of self actualization and transformation for each of us. Where i get 'heartburn' is in the assumption on the part of many who read this book that 'his' path should be 'their' path.

It's like the idea of reciting a mantra. Ok, this is supposed to give your attention span an anchor while dealing with the drama of the world to help 'hang on' to your center within the unfolding moment. This is fine for beginners who are first attempting to master the practice of 'mindfulness', but, as is poignantly expressed in the Zen classic about taming the bull, at some point, you must stop trying to guide the bull and must let the bull BE the bull. Alpert just encourages TOO MUCH striving. Striving is futile. He also misrepresents his relationship with 'Bhagavan Das' in subtle ways that distort the truth of the matter. Read Bhagavan Das's own account in his book, it's Here Now, Are You.

Finally, there is much to be learned from the study of Yoga, Hinduism, Buddhism, and indeed, every spiritual tradition on the face of the Earth--but you don't actualize yourself by imitating the spiritual customs of other cultures. Each of us was born into a socio-cultural matrix, for better or worse. Each of us belongs to a tribe. Like it or not, that tribe has ancient totemic icons that figure prominently in the story of our tribe. You cannot simply ditch this reality because someone else's culture looks more appealing. Spiritual transformation doesn't work that way. What you must do is to get in touch with your OWN roots, in a very personal way, and create your OWN religion. Discover the voices of your Old Ones from your own DreamTime. Instead of repeating a mantra, invent a new mantra with every incantation. What in the hell do you think enlightenment IS, anyway? You think its like striking the Comstock Lode? Going to Paradise and receiving 15 doe eyed Houris? You still have to brush your teeth and take out the trash. You will still have to wait for the bus with the rest of us. But, like some distant space vehicle, you will have turned your antenna towards your true origins and will be open to receive transmissions from command central.

Take this book with a BIG lump of salt. Enlightenment is not to be found in the Bible, the Baghavad Gita, or the Tao Te Ching, or in this book--it is to be found within yourself, and within the context of working out your karma in your own socio-cultural matrix. Of course wisdom can be studied in these scriptures, but they are NO substitute for processing ones own experience, and knowing oneself.Quit joining up with groups that claim to have all the answers. You are sufficient unto yourself. According to Jesus, the Buddha, and Lao Tse, you are perfect. As You Are. IF, as the Buddha claims, you have Buddha nature, then it's as simple as getting up in the morning. Wake up! There is nowhere to go. There is nothing to do. This is it! And thou art that! And EVERY seat is the best seat in the house!

During the 1960's, the younger generation of that time used acid as a way to discover and then pursue a deeper relationship with God. While times have changed, the message Baba Ram Dass puts forth in his book is timeless. Be Here Now came into my life about three years ago and reading it simply felt like it was the next step I needed to take in my own journey. After studying yoga for many years, Be Here Now helped strengthen my awareness with the mental and spiritual aspects of yoga. I have never had the chance to meet Ram Dass in person, but I once saw him give a lecture when he was a guest on Lilias Folan's PBS series and found him to be one of the most humble teachers of our time. He has made his experience of India with the teachings of Buddhism and yogic philosophy his own. And with his humility and guidance one can make the experience of Being Here Now their own.

Book Description

The spiritual life is not a life then and there, but a life here and now. It is a life in which the spirit of God is revealed in the ordinary encounters of everyday. In this book of meditations, Henri Nouwen shows in a personal and insightful way that God is much closer to us than we ordinarily realize.

5 out of 5 stars Ready to die...??.......2007-04-03

This short book provides an account of the author's near-death experience after injuries suffered in an accident. It was very interesting to read the progress of his emotional and spiritual condition - increasing closeness to God as he moved toward death. Later, when his physical condition turned around and he began to recover, he didn't feel any relief or thankfulness. Rather, he went into a state of grief and despair at being denied final union with God. Reading this account led me to think about how I would react in a similar situation. I'm not sure I would react in the same way at all... But death is something that comes to each of us in the end... Our days are numbered, but the number is uncertain. Perhaps we should strive toward being better prepared.

2 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?.......2006-02-22

While this was an easy read and well written book, I felt like Nouwen kept repeating himself throughout. I don't doubt his experience and am happy for him that he found such peace and definition for his service in life. But as for myself, it did nothing to further my spirituality or make me feel comfortable or peaceful about death. This came highly recommended and I wound up speed-reading through the last third of the book to get through it.

5 out of 5 stars A "Jewel" of spiritual books..........2005-10-17

I've had this book for a while and always go back to it. I've recommended it to many friends as I am always glad that it was recommended to me. Well worth the read, guaranteed!

5 out of 5 stars Be Still and Know that I AM.......2003-11-25

Henri Nouwen examines his life after a near death accident in which he encounters the Living God.

Facing the possibililty of dying he is able to let go and let God's unconditional love come to him and accept himself as God sees him.

His recovery from the accident brings about many changes in his attitude towards his family, friends, acquaintances and yes even his enemies. The experience brought resolve and forgiveness for his sins and the sins of others.

To come back to the living and take his daily cross was very difficult, since he had already prepared himself for the next life with Christ. To return to the former routine seemed impossible at that time but before long he had gone back to his former ways and was constantly trying to keep the peace that he had found during his illness.

Another book that touches on going to the mountain top and coming back would be "Hind's Feet on High Places" Hinds' Feet on High Places an allegory by Hannah Hurnard.

5 out of 5 stars Preparing for Home.......2002-12-31

This book is different from many of Nouwen's other writings in that he presents lessons learned and spiritual reflections from a very specific event in his life (an almost fatal accident). As he often does, Nouwen delves deep into his own mind and shares his fears and deepest thoughts as he faced death. His thoughts on forgiveness "in the very end" for others and by others, caused me to give great consideration to how I daily forgive. If you fear death or are not "ready" for it, this book provides comforting thoughts for preparing for our real home.

5 out of 5 stars A big little book about the only time that matters... now.......2006-07-12

I'm very happy to have encountered this little book... its size is conversely related to the wisdom of its content.
It has openned my eyes to a "new" reality and little by little is opening my heart to the present moment and nothing else.
The quotes or stories come from very different backgrounds and authors, all pointing to the same direction (or no direction at all) No matter what you believe or don't believe please allow your heart to enjoy the wisdom that you will find in this book, or more accurately, in you own heart.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle reminders when faced with uncertainty.......2005-12-26

My husband bought this for me for Christmas. We're faced with giving birth in February to a child who will require several open heart surgeries. I've been struggling with the anticipation and fear - mostly of the unknown. It's made the days hard to get through.

I've picked up this book no less than 10 times in the few hours since he's given it to me, and each page contains a small wisdom that reminds me to focus on where I am at this moment - even if it means embracing the anger and the fear. Each page is a gentle reminder that the moment is where we are; to dwell in the unknown is to miss living fully in the now. All the rest, everything before and beyond the now, is out of our control - and this book makes that concept a little less frightening.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a compendium, a companion.......2005-05-06

I love Josh Baran's 365 Nirvana Here and Now. The first time through, I read it linearly. Now I pick it up when I desire a dose of truth, a moment of contemplation. Each of the short selections is rich in an of itself. Additional golden nuggets from Baran provide a deepening of experience, a context that reaches across traditions. A comprehensive, thoughtful and lovely book.

5 out of 5 stars eternally gratifying.......2005-03-31

I decided to dog-ear special selections in this book. There are a lot of dog-eared pages! It is eternally gratifying because one inquires further into various authors and masters quoted (they are listed in the bibliography) and the journey continues-or just stop journeying, stop doing and enjoy just being as suggested on every page. Wow, Josh Baran did all the years of research and all I have to do is open the book.

Fate deals sisters Marcella and Raquel completely different lives in Kimberla Lawson Roby's Here and Now. Determined to give her children a better life, Marcella struggles to find financial stability without the aid of her unreliable ex-husband, Tyrone. When she stretches herself too thin between her job and full-time college classes, Marcella refuses to question her decision despite the negative effects it's having on her children. The promise of her new romance with a medical student named Darryl, and the support of her family encourage her to continue. But when Tyrone threatens to withhold his meager support, Marcella feels her careful balance starting to topple--sending her into a cycle of anger and aggression with Tyrone that threatens her own health as well as her relationship with Darryl.

Sister Raquel has the unconditional love and support of her husband, Kevin, yet she aches to have a child of her own. After years of fruitless efforts, Kevin is willing to consider fertility treatment or adoption, but Raquel refuses to give up on natural methods, and swears they need just one more chance. Her blind lack of realism starts to wear on Kevin, and their relationship begins to fray. When Raquel finally agrees to treatment, their marriage is subsumed by the effort, and they lose sight of each other. A pregnancy brings renewed hope, but have they already lost each other? Here and Now offers a poignant story of two women struggling to define their future and learning to value the present. Mundane details and an unexpected dream sequence may frustrate readers, but the appeal of Roby's strong characters and realistic issues outweigh any faults the book may have, making this an enjoyable and thought-provoking read. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

2 out of 5 stars I Don't Think So.......2007-06-30

I bought this book when it came out initially, the hardbound that cost 20- something dollars. Paying that much is the only reason I finished it and I tell you, I was at work when I finished and wanted to throw it from the 10th floor where I was. I haven't bought anything by Ms. Roby since then but I'm sort of scrapped for good story lines right now and may give her another try. I mean, at least with "Here and Now," she was thinking with some depth, although she was unsuccessful in pulling it off. Perhaps at this point, Ms. Roby has found her voice.

5 out of 5 stars great read.......2007-05-21

AS usual the author has written a book that surpasses all others. Makes you laugh and cry.

Ms. Lawson Roby is an excellent storyteller and one of my very favorite writers. I was into this novel from start to finish.

Although I found this to be an ok read it is one of Ms.Roby's weakest books! If this will be your first KLR read I advise you not to get this one, borrow it, she is a good author with some good books out there this is not one you should start with.I'm still a fan!

1 out of 5 stars I can't even finish this book...........2005-05-31

I decided to try this book on a whim. I wish I had not.

The characters are not believable and the dialogue is pretty bad.

The author tries to make it seem, this book is about strong black women who overcome.

I have never seen a weaker bunch of chicks in my life.

One sister has children that are going without, she gets food stamps and at one point welfare (and lied to do so) and works a $7/hr job. Her kids' dad is an electrician that makes very good money, dresses nicely and does well for himself. However she won't take him to court and get child support. Yeah. That's what I call a strong woman.

I could go on, but I won't. If I keep writing, I will only get madder about the money I spent on this book.

Bhagavan Das is back. The 1970's guru of egregiousness, who inspired the title of Ram Dass' Be Here Now, has penned a spiritual memoir that is stranger than fiction, farther out than the Oort Cloud. We last saw our hero when he was a spiritual rock star touring the hippie circuit with Allen Ginsberg. Soon thereafter he dropped out of the scene and took a job at a Dodge dealership to support his second family. Peyote beckoned him to the desert, then he raised magic mushrooms, sold encyclopedias to Marines, dabbled in solar power, attended Bible college, and ended up selling overpriced car insurance to poor people--until his latest 18-year-old girlfriend flipped out on acid and ended his career.

Bhagavan Das's writing is guileless. He neither boasts nor apologizes. He describes the manic ride he has been on since he left California after high school. For seven years he wandered around India and Nepal, practicing austerities, sitting at the feet of gurus, studying Buddhist scriptures, and getting laid. The common denominator in his pursuits seems to be a search for the ultimate high. Whether he is kissed on the forehead by a saint, standing at the foot of a 20-foot stone statue of Vishnu, lost in meditation, dropping acid, or being initiated into tantric sex, his descriptions are in the same terms: "mind-blowing," "out-of-body," "ultimate bliss," "beyond the beyond." It's Here Now (Are You?) is an entertaining, vicarious journey through a life that you don't mind visiting, but you wouldn't want to live. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

In his classic book Be Here Now, Ram Dass introduced the world to a young guru named Bhagavan Das. Continuing his own story in It's Here Now (Are You?), Bhagavan Das shares the profound and surreal moments of his spiritual awakening in the East, his fall from grace in the West, and his peaceful reconciliation with the sacred center.

For many years in the early '70s Bhagavan Das moved through India and Nepal, embracing the austere life of a holy man, exploring Hinduism, Buddhism, transcendental meditation, tantra, worshipping the divine mother, and living under the loving blanket of his guru, Neem Karoli Baba. Only twenty-five years old when he returned home to the States as a celebrity, he found himself traveling on the "guru circuit" with Ram Dass, Allen Ginsberg, Jerry Garcia, and Timothy Leary--living more like a rock star than the saint he was proclaimed to be.

In compelling detail, Bhagavan Das explores the tortuous journey that led him from his quest for the sacred to his spiritual death and eventual rebirth. A vivid memoir like no other, It's Here Now (Are You?) is an odyssey that will inspire seekers of any age on their own road to fulfillment.

This book reads like a journal. It was definitely interesting - this guy really started living the *hippie* existence even before the hippies started - lots of drugs, sex - he was really a beatnik.

It's funny though, between all the drugs, sex, transcendental experiences and depressions , it's hard to say if I really learned anything. A guru who gets caught up in a lot of sex and drugs, then becomes disgusted with it... well.. I'm not entirely sure if he's the complete teacher.

Anyway, my favorite Indian guru is "Ramana Maharshi". Might be good reading to balance this book out.

4 out of 5 stars Good at face value.......2007-04-11

Bhagavan Das sounds honest with most of this text, which, given some of the unbelievable extremities of his account, is quite an accomplishment and I'm more willing to believe his story. The reader will probably be left with lots of questions along the way, but it does fill in a lot of holes left over from Be Here Now. He also gives a lot of info on 60s India and 70s 'spiritual' movements in America you probably won't find in many other places.

Whatever you say about Bhagavan Das's ethics or writing ability probably isn't that relevant to the quality of the book itself.

3 out of 5 stars Bhagged Down.......2006-10-26

This book should be called "I'm Escaping The Present Moment And All Responsibility For My Actions Now, Are You?"

This book is hard to review without judging the man who wrote it. In terms of literary merit, it is not well written. It reads more like an outline of a vast array of psychedelic events that never goes into any one event very deeply. That being said, it is a fascinating tale of an extraordinarily conflicted man who constantly contradicts himself and loves to swing between extremes. A great, if tragic character.

The value in this book is not found in any wisdom Bhag. Das may (or may not) have gleaned, but in the colorful picture it paints of the spiritual scene in late 60s India and early 70s America. The book is an intriguing portrait of what it was like to be right in the middle of it. The real gurus, the fake gurus, the zealous devotees, the drugs, the sex, the confusion. In India he studied with several famous teachers and when he gets back to America, Allen Ginsberg, Alan Watts (who was apparently a notorious drunk!) and Ram Dass, among others are constantly floating in and out of his life. It is also an interesting to see how he dealt with his unwanted fame.

Bhagavan Das says that in America he was living like a "spiritual rock star." Spiritual hypocrite is more like it. The book is rampant with examples of how he uses his spiritual quest as a way to escape from his own present reality. For example, in a chapter in which he claims to have been learning about devotion from his Native American "grandfather", he also describes how he had a stream of girls going in and out of his teepee while his wife and child were "in the background" in Santa Fe. He describes how he prays for hours, upon days, upon years to the great mother, the goddess Kali Ma, and yet he was utterly unable to remain faithful to his own wife. He even gets another woman pregnant while he was still married. While he was surrendering his soul to the Great Mother in the sky, he was womanizing and boozing his way through the females here on earth. Actually, he even blames Kali Ma for destroying his relationships with women out of jealousy. It isn't the fact that he was incapable of taking responsibility for her personal relationship - Kali Ma just becomes one more woman who screwed things up for him. While he was busy seeing everyone as god, he forgot that they were human beings who were affected by his actions. Even after the years of austerities and meditation he practiced, he was still unable to conquer his enormous ego.

Bhagavan Das uses his spiritual quest the way he uses drugs - as a way to get high and to escape. It is ironic that he was the hero of Ram Dass' "Be Here Now" because he is always looking for the next guru, the next vision, the next party, the next woman, the next high, the next narcotic. I never knew that bliss could be so depressing.

I have seen Bhaghavan Das perform live and I love the "Now" CD. His singing has brought me a lot of joy. Listen to the music, not the man. That's my advice.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting story with many contradictions.......2005-11-23

This is an interesting story and a page-turner. It definitely rambles and becomes incoherent, especially towards the end. I was left wondering about all the contradictions between the professed spirituality of Bhagavan Das, especially his 'deep' spiritual experiences in India, and then the full-blown hedonism and ego-centered pleasure that he pursued later. But in the end they were really the same pursuit.

It seems that his Guru never taught him that Yoga includes moral precepts, called the yamas and niyamas. These include practices such as celibacy, purity, and contentment. BD goes hog-wild for the drugs, booze, and women without a thought to these principles. The story seems to become more of a memoir to the anything-goes 'if it feels good do it' mentality/morality of the 60's. He's definitely looking for the ultimate high for himself and NOT spiritual contentment or service to others, especially his wives or children.

I think if the spiritual experiences he describes were really authentic, he would have behaved with some self-control and concern for others. Real practice cultivates peace within and compassion for others without. It's not always these dramatic fireworks and orgasms of merging into Infinity. What good is that? Also, you can't behave like a sex-and-drug-crazed-psycho and think you are a holy man. The constant changing of gurus, deities, mantras, wives, practices, etc. is classic 'monkey-mind' behavior. There is nothing holy or balanced about it.

The huge consumption of drugs throughout the story makes me wonder if BD wasn't delusional and after reading it I felt like I had taken a bad acid trip with him for 15 hours. I was glad it was over. I seriously doubted whether many of the experiences described here were in fact 'real' or just psychedelic-inspired hallucinations.

His wives and children are pretty much forgotten by the end of the story. They seem inconsequential. The story is about him and his bliss. It's just BD and his nada yoga.

5 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Tale of a Spiritual Journey.......2003-04-15

This is really a great book and one that I would recommend to anyone interested in devotional spirituality, especially Hindu and Buddhist. This is a very honest book and he has clearly made it a point to not glamorize it or gloss over the sordid parts. Highly recommended!

Book Description

A concise and practical manual to understand and handle past-life experiences with a focus on the present. A mine of information on the mechanisms of the mind and emotions, and how consciousness can be freed from latent conditioning. It discusses the need for a metaphysical dimension in psychological work, and the cleansing of the astral body in the Clairvision work of inner alchemy.

2 out of 5 stars Needlessly complex approach . . ........2007-07-30

First, Dr. Sagan's approach to past life problems is doubtless very effective. He places a metaphysical twist on it by using names from Hindu teaching and mysticism, some of which I see as potentially useful in clarifying concepts. He spends an inordinate time digressing into the effect of "samskaras" upon meditation, helpful if your suffering client is involved with extensive hours of meditation, but otherwise simply a time-consuming digression.

One of my concerns is that Dr. Sagan seems to believe that (1) most people experiencing regression (other than with him or his students) come away believing they are some king or princess; and (2)exploration of past lives is a useless parlor game if undertaken for other than healing of "samskaras". With Dr. Sagan, I abhor charletans who would inform people they were Cleopatra or Napoleon. However, in my practice, I have found no one who believed they were royalty/persons of note, and most of the lives encountered were very plebian--farmers, slaves, and the like. While healing of past life wounds is, of course, the primary goal of past life regression therapy, the self-knowledge which comes from simple exploration of past lives is not to be distained.

There are many compassionate and competent regression therapists doing invaluable work in healing the wounds and carryovers (yes, samskaras, if you will) from past lives, and there are many people living richer, healthier lives as a result. There are a number of excellent, in depth books dealing with regression therapy and related issues that he doesn't touch on. I am saddened that Dr. Sagan seems to believe that only through his system can anyone achieve release. This is simply not true.

For the person wishing to study or do past life therapy, I recommend first IBRT (International Board for Regression Therapy) certified courses in past life therapy, plus extensive study and reading. There are a number of excellent resources. However, I cannot recommend this book as a starting point, or even a mid-point. Frankly, I have found that this book did not significantly contribute to my knowledge or practice. Regardless, if you are suffering from a problem which may have a past life root, I would urge you to seek out a competent past life regression therapist. If that is in Sydney, it may well be Dr. Sagan or his group.

4 out of 5 stars Response for "What A Waste of Money".......2006-09-13

This is a thin book, fast read, but one that you may end up rereading simply to help absorb all that is there. Other books by Sagan outline processes and techniques to try for yourself, but Regression is more about tying together loose theories about samskaras. Although clearly written, the book speaks more to an audience that has some knowledge or experience with ISIS or other form of regression, without which, the reader is just intrigued but not awe-struck. I feel it's a great book, one that has helped connect a few dots after traversing different meditation styles which left gaping holes in the manas/mind discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Samskaras - the emotional knots preventing self realisation.......2001-08-17

This is an excellent book mainly because it offers a real structure to help with understanding the sometimes confusing crisis-oriented experiences that are revealed as the result of past-life regression.

To begin with, the book presents a more-or-less standard account of the overall pattern and structure of the multi-life experiences of the personal self. It differs in the provision of a structural analysis that can be applied to situations faced by many "ordinary" people when first becoming aware of the phenomenon and mystery of "past-lives". "Samskara" is an important Sanskrit term in Hindu philosophy. Samscaras are the result of large emotional and ethical checks received by individuals in the course of their lives. As such they represent deep emotional scars of such intensity that they generate commanding surface "desires" in the "normal" everyday waking personality. These desires in turn become the basis for the elaboration of choices, choices which affect current lives. When such choices fail to yield personal satisfaction, the resulting yearning and sorrow may drive selection of a future life. In aggregate, samskaras may be thought of as an endless progression of waves(of all sizes)moving across an infinite sea representing the personal self, the ego.

Here is an example of a samskara, from my own experience (in this life): when I was four my father invited me to launch myself across a deep pool in a small stream to where he was standing on the other side. I could not swim at that stage and I was afraid but my father insisted that he would catch me, before I sank, in the event that I might fail to make it to his side. With this assurance, I launched out but sadly floundered. It seemed to me that I nearly drowned, seeing the small bubbles above my face, before my father pulled me out of the water. My mother remonstrated with him but my father said I was in no danger and in retrospect obviously I wasn't. My father taught me to swim thereafter but for many years I had a huge problem with trust - I felt I had failed myself by extending trust so I did not easily do it again. I happily dissolved the scar representing this samskara (actually a little ripple)before my father died but it did affect my relationships for a long time before I removed it.

Almost any life, past or present, will yield such scars. Some huge and deep waves stir and batter the soul to its depths and other little ones barely ruffle the surface. Regression to a past-life will usually face turbulance from the wave most closely associated with a "current-life" concern. The Isis technique advocated in this book allows this conjunction to be directly experienced.

The waves are infinite in number and one often wonders what can be done to calm this endless sea. This book provides a technique that actually works very effectivly in the identification of such spiritual traumas and helps with "rooting-out" the cause. Following removal of the 6-10 most significant samscaras the way will be opened for persons to directly experience the higher self. A most useful book, highly recommended 10 stars!

1 out of 5 stars What a waste of money!.......2001-08-11

This book earned one star for having made a couple interesting points. However, there is no progression or continuity in thought development, and the writing style demonstrates a fragmented, sporadic thinking process. This makes it extremely frustrating to try to follow along and make sense of what the author is trying to say. Like listening to a person who recognizes an interesting idea he doesn't fully understand, when he tries to explain it, the idea is rendered indefensible because he not capable of explaining it. The author introduces a topic, meanders away from it, and then draws conclusions! Because he jumps from one idea to another, he doesn't present cohesive ideas or clearly convey meanings. I'm amazed to see how many books he has to his credit. This one is superficial, if not artificial. It is a complete turn-off to anyone eager to learn more about regression therapy.

5 out of 5 stars A metaphysical approach to psycological work...........2000-03-28

Wow! This book really takes Regression to another level...

The Regression work itself is a vehicle for an energy to work with you so that deeply embedded psychological imprints and patterns can be discharged at the very source of when they began. The result is de-conditioning bad habits, behavioural patterns and reactions.

The case studies outlined in the book illustrate clearly what the process of ISIS - Inner Space Interactive Sourcing, can reveal to people.

I have worked with the ISIS technique that is outlined in the book with the professionals from the Clairvision School, and it is definitely the most powerful work on self-development that I have ever done. I have seen in myself emotional patterns that have been nagging at me for my whole life as well as physical health problems, just fade away.

A must read for those doing serious meditation or self-development work...

3 out of 5 stars Traditional Catholic Beliefs presented in an easy to read format.......2007-10-01

Let me start by saying that I don't disagree with anything Ms. Welborn presents in this book. Maybe my expectations were too high when I purchased this book having read the reviews already posted. While Ms. Welborn presents accurate and traditional Catholic Teachings in this book, I didn't find anything fresh or new. That's not to say that this book isn't well written. I would say, however, that if your looking for a book that tells you that you can have it all to "live the good life" you will be disappointed. This book is a sound, matter of fact approach to living with a true Catholic identity. I am glad the Ms. Welborn didn't water anything down and stayed true to the Catholic Churches teachings. It is worth reading as I presents Catholic Theology in an easy and accessible way.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome, Inspired work!.......2007-03-31

I have just found a new favorite author in Amy Welborn.
Her writing is not just "inspirational" it is truly inspired. I don't think there is a wasted word. I could not put this book down. Amy has a wonderful down to earth way to relate profound Truths. You will not regret buying and reading this book. If you love the Faith you will be reassured, if you are unsure you will be enlightened. I can't wait to read more of her writing.

5 out of 5 stars Very Practical.......2005-10-21

Amy Welborn's style of writing is so practical and understandable. She writes like she is having a conversation with you....sharing her thoughts and writing what the reader is likely thinking. Her suggestion on how to get to know Jesus better are simple and doable. Catholic teenagers should read this book...it's that good.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for many age groups.......2005-10-06

This short read is a must for those Catholics who question their faith and want answers to many "whys" in the Catholic Church's teachings. It would be great to share with teens and young adults. It would be a wonderful tool for a Youth Ministry class. Amy Welborn is faithfilled and gets right to the point and the truth in a way everyone can understand.

4 out of 5 stars A Fresh Presentation of the Gospel.......2005-08-08

Although apparently targeted to teens and young adults, this small book offers a refreshing restatement of the Gospel challenge of forging a personal relationship with Jesus that older adults will find invigorating. Welborn obviously has the main qualification for any Catholic apologist: living the faith in daily prayer. Three themes stand out: 1.) her focus on Catholicism as a personal relationship with Jesus in and through His Church; 2.)the urgency of attending to Scripture, especially the Gospels; and 3.) restating John Paul the Great's theology of the body in understandable form. Welborn's book will remind you of your calling if you are older and will open your eyes if you have yet to grapple with Jesus. The only major suggestion for improvement I would offer Ms. Welborn is to focus even more on the importance of living in the Holy Spirit as the engine for the Christian life. On a much less important note, I would suggest she drop any works by Luke Timothy Johnson as a recommended source for her readers. Mr. Johnson is an outspoken critic of John Paul the Great's theology of the body. More importantly, Mr. Johnson mischaracterizes the Resurrection of Christ in his commentary on the New Testament. In my opinion, Luke Timothy Johnson is not a reliable Catholic source. Younger readers should not be directed to him as a "go-to" name.

Someday we will return to a place of unfathomable beauty, where we live amongst all the beings we have ever loved, promises George Anderson author of Walking in the Garden of Souls. "It is a place we will see again only after our lifetime of struggle, hardship and hurt has earned us the reward of true and final peace." Our task is not to simply muddle through, waiting for our ticket to Eden, cautions Anderson. Rather, we must set out to create "a Garden on earth while we are here," meaning we must cultivate the same life we yearn for in the hereafter. As he did with Lessons from the Light, Anderson conveys messages from the departed to help us tend our garden. The advice ranges from how to plant hope in times of despair to how to water the seeds of compassion (it may start with placing money in a panhandler's palm). Sometimes the garden metaphor seems forced or clichéd. But overall, this is a book with honorable intentions, helping us understand the purpose of life on Earth. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars George Anderson is The REAL deal!.......2007-09-27

I met George Anderson, shortly following the death of my son. I flew to Long Island, NY for a chance to 'hear' from my son. I write about the encounter in Blessings in the Mire, which is here in Amazon. If you want an insider's view, get the book. There is no way he (George Anderson) could have known anything about me, or about my circumstances, or about the death of my son, my brother, and my father (they all came through to greet me in Long Island!). The process was captivating, and even had my dead relatives not come across, it still would have been an experience of a lifetime. As it was, the meeting was priceless, profound, and deeply healing. If you want to know more about my experience please check out Blessings in the Mire, as well as Walking in the Garden of Souls.
As an added thought, for my trip to Long Island, I traveled with a customer who had just lost her husband. She too, received VERY PERSONAL information. She too, was impressed by the communication. Her story is also in Blessings in the Mire.
Believe it, because it's true.

Have purchased several copies to give to people experiencing grief. It has always been helpful and in fact they have all passed it on to others.
An incredibly wonderful book!!

5 out of 5 stars Just A Wonderful Book.......2007-07-22

I've had to purchase several copies of this book because everyone that I loan it to just loves it! I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. Seriously, how many books have you read (excluding the Bible) that really make you feel good inside. There is so much mental pain on this planet and this wonderful book just makes it a little more tolerable.
A good friend just had to have his dog put to "sleep", so tomorrow I'll be sending the part of the book (under the questions area in the back) about how our beloved pets will be reunited with us when we pass into spirit.

5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2007-05-11

This amazing book by George Anderson is a must read for everyone. It is not just a book about leaving this world, but a book about living in this world. We all live and we will all leave at one point and this book is instrumental in making both of those experiences the most rewarding event possible. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Walking in the Garden of Souls.......2007-03-08

The book is very insightful and I've read all of the books that George Anderson has written with his coauthors.

I recommend this book for anyone who needs comfort after suffering a loss of someone close. This book helps ease the pain by helping us understand that death is not the end.
