Secret to riches.......2007-10-07
This book is like going to a Sunday school class. It talks about Biblical times and the struggles of people living in harsh times. It also talks about people who want to grow rich and the things they do to become successful. "The Richest Man in Babylon" treated his employees generously and regularly gave a portion of his profits to the poor in his community. As a merchant he was fair and honest and dependable. The story does tell how to become rich and the road to riches is available to any person who follows the simple principles in this book.
Success in finance.......2007-09-23
An inspiring classic, and yet another testament to the fact that human follies and sound advice are timeless. Whether you're a slave in Babylon, or a modern banker, the principles are all the same: pay yourself first, save at least one tenth of your income, look for opportunity, work hard, and be wise in your investments. Passed on for centuries, it is surprising how few people use these maxims, and yet the successful stories are almost always based on them. For the hundred pages that it is, "The Richest Man in Babylon" may well be the most complete financial guide to date.
Foundational Financial Reading.......2007-09-14
This book shows how a simple financial concept can have a big impact if applied consistently over a period of time. I've implemented some of these techniques for years and they've proven very effective.
This book was referred to me in my first year as a financial advisor. A more senior advisor said it greatly impacted his financial philosophy.
The Secret of Having Good Luck.......2007-08-26
The Richest Man in Babylon is a fable that lucidly illustrates why some men attract wealth and success almost effortlessly while others struggle for a lifetime and get nowhere. If you want the secret of the Midas touch and to have the "luck of the Irish", then you will find what you are looking for in this little book. You could easily read it in one sitting and be changed forever. Get it. It is absolutely delightful!
Other books on this genre that you will enjoy equally as well are:

Thank you, Mr. Clason for this charming and enlightening fable.
One of the greatest books.......2007-08-24
This book covers the basics of personal finance. It is very easy to read and very informative. If you want to structure your finances, this book is a must.
Book Description
Tim LaHaye’s most exciting series ever, Babylon Rising, continues with this explosive new installment, including more revelations than ever before. In
The Edge of Darkness, LaHaye reveals the meaning behind some of the most carefully guarded Biblical prophecies to expose a conspiracy with terrifying consequences for our modern world.
This time Michael Murphy sets off in search of the Lost Temple of Dagon and the dark secrets of the strange god once worshipped by the ancient Philistines. His quest will lead to a final confrontation with an old enemy and uncover one of the Bible’s most feared warnings–a prophecy of false miracles, false messiahs, and ultimate evil that will be fulfilled in our time...and that not even Murphy can stop once it’s begun.
Once again Tim LaHaye combines his unmatched insight into Biblical prophecy with his unique skills as a master storyteller to deliver a suspense thriller of nonstop action with a thought-provoking message for our troubled times.
Customer Reviews:
Tim LaHaye you are awesome! .......2007-10-11
What a great book! The next books just get better than the previous.I love this series. The main character'Dr Michael Murphy', is perfect. I finished reading this in 4 days, and with two kids it was so hard to put down. I can't wait 4 the next one.
Tim LaHaye does it again.......2007-09-05
Tim LaHaye has a way with blending fiction into biblical prophecy. His stories are fast-paced, and hard to put down.
"The Edge of Darkness" tells of the fast approaching time of the anti-christ. This series is a must read for everybody.
When will book 5 be out?.......2007-08-30
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book but as with the others it did not conclude. The way scripture is woven into the story line makes it interesting and I believe will lead to further investigation by those not familiar with the themes. A good thing.
Unable to Review .......2007-08-28
I do not have a review as I did not receive the book. The order was cancelled by Amazon stating that they could not deliver the item to the address listed. This is strange as I have received other books at the same address. I was not very happy about it. I will now have to go and purchase it at the Barnes & Noble store.
This series keeps getting more and more disappointing..........2007-06-13
I was a huge fan of the first book in the Babylon Rising series, but I feel that the subsequent novels--including and especially this one--have slowly but surely been going downhill. The Edge of Darkness and the third book, The Europa Conspiracy, have lacked the action of the first book, and even of the second book, The Secret on Ararat. This novel also consisted mainly of lackluster dialogue and ridiculously simple thoughts on the part of its characters, along with childish comparisons (such as toward the end of the book, when the Seven are comparing their actions to fountains etc. at the Chateau de Versailles) that served as a constant annoyance.
Also, Tim Lahaye kills off many important characters in this Babylon Rising installation. I won't name names because I don't want to spoil things for anyone who hasn't read this book yet, but I feel that it's a bit late for the authors to start introducing new MAIN characters into the series, which is what they will have to do now that all but a couple of its main characters are dead. The authors need to go back to the basics of what made the first Babylon Rising book, and even the second one, the hits that they were.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Customer Reviews:
A product of the Cold War era.......2007-09-07
This book was written in a time when nuclear war seemed probable. Bomb shelters were practical things to buy and "duck-and-cover" was being used in schools. Looking back, it seems silly to think like that. We, the people of the 21st century, understand that a cache of nuclear weapons--except in the hands of madmen--are only useful for pschological warfare. We also grasp more fully the power and environmental hazzards of a nuclear strike. Because of our 50+ years of accumilated knowledge, ALAS, BABYLON may be a hard pill for some to swallow, but it isn't without merrit.
The problems with the book, first. The war, besides being relegated to pure background noise, is just thin. It's a setup that doesn't seem believable today. The effects of the nuclear strike are greatly under estimated. Considering that everything around Fort Repose (the fictional setting of this book) has been devastated by Russian nukes, it is highly unlikely that radiological fallout would not contaminate the area entirely. Ultimately, this leads the book to an overly "rosy" conclusion. (In a post-Katrina United States, we know the inneptitude with which the government reacted to a disaster we saw coming, and that two years later we still haven't fully restored that one region that was hit. How are we to believe a nuclear disaster of this scale, one that we had no time to prepare for, could start to be mended only one year later?)
But ALAS, BABYLON is not bad. In spite of some iffy dialog and their improbable resourcefulness, the characters are what make this book interesting. Randy Bragg (our main character) is certainly a progressive when taken in the context his time. The interaction of Randy and his surroudings gives us great insight into the mind of Pat Frank, I think.
This book works better as a tool to understanding American society (race relations, the state of optimism, fear of war, misinformation, etc.) in the Fifties, than it does as an actual tale. When viewed in that context, ALAS, BABYLON is quite good.
Alas, Babylon 1959.......2007-08-10
Plot Kernel - The people within a small town in Florida cope with uncertainty and the limitations of supply after their area is spared from the devastation of a massive nuclear exchange between the U.S. and Russia.
Alas, Babylon.......2007-08-07
Great book. I first read this book in college, 30 years ago. Some parts of this book have stayed with me all the years since that time. For instance, the description of "valuable items" traded in the market place, including safety pins and pencils. The struggle to survive of the regular citizens of this small town makes me want to go learn something about survival skills, or hope that I am at ground zero of a bomb myself.
Powerful and memorable - certainly the best of the post-nuclear war genre.......2007-07-04
I first read this book as a teen in the 70s and it had a powerful effect on me then. The images conveyed by this novel have stayed with me ever since. There are scenes from this book that I vividly remember more than 30 years later and I recently decided to reread it. Judging from some of the other reviews, there are many readers who share this view and have returned again and again to this novel. There are lots of other reviews that contain detailed plot summaries which I won't repeat here. The story revolves around the survivors of an all-out nuclear war living in rural Florida in the late 1950s. The day after the attack isn't too different than the before for Randy Bragg and his family who are located far from any military or civilian targets. Over a few days though it dawns on Bragg and the other residents of Fort Repose that many of the things that have been taken for granted in modern society (like regular deliveries of food to the grocery store) are long gone and likely will never return. There will be no more deliveries of heating oil, money is worthless, and once the small amount of gasoline is gone, everyone walks. If anyone still believes in the folly of a 'winnable' all-out nuclear war, they should read this book. One aspect of this genre (and this book in particular) that I find compelling is how the author treats the problem of what things from modern society will disappear and how will they be replaced. There are many obvious things (electricity, refrigeration, medicine, etc.), but many more mundane problems (e.g. shoes) that will become progressively more important months or years after the initial attack. Randy Bragg and his cohorts encounter and overcome a wide range of obstacles in their fight to survive. If I had any negative comment about this book, it is in fact far too optimistic about the fate of the survivors. Randy Bragg and his family never seriously have to contend with the fall-out, famine, and disease that would afflict all survivors to a greater or lesser degree. These things are touched upon (and even encountered), but they don't affect the residents of Fort Repose in a severe way. In any case, this is a powerful story about survival and the attempt to maintain and rebuild civilization after the catastrophic destruction of our organized society. A great book though that you will never forget, definitely worth the money to buy as you'll likely want to read it again and again.
very good book.......2007-06-27
somewhat outdated in belveability, however, it could still happen today. This book was written at the height of the Cold War and the fears of nuclear war. well written and worth ther time it takes to read it.

Veteran Washington observers name names, document lies.......1998-10-10
Alex Cockburn and Ken Silverstein hold a clinic on how to interpret Washington DC, boldly naming names, citing specific incidents, invoking histories those less familiar with the subject leave out. Terrific job on how the New Boss is Same as the Old Boss -- and will be until we stop getting fooled again.

A fabulous strip that is sadly gone from the papers.......2007-05-10
Thankfully we can still get his books of Bloom County and Outland and of course, his current iteration, Opus.
I have always loved Berkely's quirky look at life, politics, love and what not through the eyes of Milo, Opus, Cutter John and others throughout the years and when I bought this book, I would read 2-3 pages, often before turning out the light at night and would find myself laughing at much of the strips. That's how good they are, even now some 20 years later and I recall reading many of then when they were running in the papers. While some of the strips show their age a little, the strip is as still timeless now as when they were originally conceaved. That's a rare feat in my book.
While it's by no means all of his Bloom County strips, it's a good collection of some of the best and that alone is worth it.
Horrible, cheap black & white printing of a great book.......2005-10-27
Despite what the item description says, there are no color pages in this cheap reprinting. The pages are printed only in black and white, and are printed in very poor quality. What a shame, because the book itself is fantastic. I have an original printing of this book and love it. I ordered this reprint as a gift and had to return it because of the poor print quality. Bloom County is on my short list of all-time favorite comics. The original form, before short-lived "Outland" or the current "Opus", is long gone, though. Picking up this book was a wonderful piece of nostlagia.
The series peaked some time in the early 80s, and "Babylon" offers a sample of that time. I had forgotten how topical it was, full of references to then-current supermodels, presidents, movies, and sitcoms. Despite that, much of the humor has aged well. Milo's anxiety closet, for example, never needs to end. Various bogey-men (and -women) will reside there for their times, and move on. The anxiety will always be there, however, no matter how silly it looks to everyone else.
Even a book this size can't capture every strip in the five years (82-6) that it covers. That means that some of my favorite characters, like winsome Pistachio, barely even had cameo appearances. I'll take what I can get, though, and this is a pleasant sample.
If you ever liked any strip comic, you liked Bloom County or will like it. Maybe the 80s were before your time, but the characters will still look right up to date. Enjoy!

Possibly the best of the Bloom County collections........2004-04-13
This book is an overview of the first five years of the strip, ranging from the early strips in which the focus is mostly on Milo, through the introductions of Binkley, Bobbi, Cutter John, Opus, Oliver Wendell Jones, Steve Dallas, and finally, Bill The Cat. Personally, I've always had a preference for the early, pre-Bill The Cat strips; I could deal with the silliness inherent in Opus and Oliver's anthropomorphic computer, but Bill just seemed one step over the line. But I know that he's very popular, and he's here, too. There are a few strips here that were reprinted from the previous three collections, but most of this material is NOT reprints. Of course, much of the humor will be completely incomprehensible to anyone who wasn't politically aware during the '80s, but I suspect that even for such a (hopefully) young person, there's plenty here to enjoy.
Full color? I must be colorblind........2003-10-16
Buyer beware: the editorial review states that this book contains eighty full-color pages, but it doesn't. It contains eighty pages that obviously were at one time or another in color, but which are now a messy conglomeration of grays and whites, much like something you'd expect to see coming out of a low-grade fax machine.
Many years ago, I read another copy of this book that did, in fact, contain eighty full-color pages, so I know the pages were in color at some point. However, the only colors on the book I received from Amazon.com are on the front and back covers.

Charming book.......2007-06-12
The book gives you ancient Babylonian wisdom of finances that are so relevant to the twenty first century. It was written over 50 years ago and will always remain a classic in my eyes. It is written in a story- fashion and very cleverly so. The language used is old English, which adds to the book a touch of sophistication, most charming. The lessons are valuble for every era and generation.
Parents would be wise if they can coax their teenagers to read this book.
Most enjoyable once you get immersed into it. The end has a nice surprise!
Wealth in Ancient Ways.......2007-05-23
This book showed me how to manage my money and be wealthy, not just with money. I know for myself I like to spend, spend, spend and spend. The book has showen me ways to plan for the future.
A Seminal Text on Money Management that Everyone Should Read.......2007-03-25
This allegorical telling of how a man in ancient Babylon arose from poverty to become the richest man in Babylon and a councilor to the king. This is so important I reread it from time to time and have given it to me children. The audio copy is excellently executed.
Very informative book.......2007-01-03
I found this book to be inspiring and informative. I loved the story format and the fact that it was based on a city many, many years ago and the basic fundamental message is the same today. A worthwhile purchase!
The Essential Fundamentals.......2006-11-17
There are so many books and recordings out there on how to create wealth. The problem with these books are that they can only be implemented when you have accumulated certain amount of money (typically around $500k in assets), so it wouldnt benefit the average joe. On the other hand if you do possess the required assets, it is still a struggle to double your wealth because you dont have the knowledge of the fundamentals of creating wealth.
Majority of the information out there would explain to you how to increase your assets, but what they dont explain to you is how to start with "Nothing" and create wealth. "The richest man in babylon" clearly addresses this important issue and have to admit that majority of the informations out there lack this principle. It is like teaching you how to write sentences without you knowing your ABC's,... and thats why lots of informations on creating wealth fails with so many people.
Being successful in any area of your life means grasping and mastering the fundamentals, and "The richest man in babylon" delivers the fundamentals clearly, precisely and easily.
I give this a 5stars based on the high quality of educational content it provides to its listener/reader(from all walks of life).

Richest Man in babylon--good advice.......2007-09-07
An easy read, interesting story, excellent advice.
My wife and I have read it and will pass it on to our son. I will buy copies for several friends
Amazing read........2007-08-23
This book teaches through examples.
Easy read, was able to finish it in a couple days. But it has a store of knowledge that will probably be able to last me a lifetime.
The older version was better........2007-08-20
I read the Revised version (1995) and really enjoyed that. I purchased the 21st Century edition and was really disappointed. Some key ideas that I thought were very important like "don't get so consumed with acquiring wealth that you forget to enjoy life" were taken out of this edition. Also an entire chapter was removed that taught the importance of hard work. Not only that but the layout of book is much less aesthetically pleasing, making it more difficult to read. So I wouldn't buy this edition. I highly recommend the revised edition (yellow cover).
Babylon for babies.......2007-07-30
Might be a good book to read to the kid. However, a bright child might get bored with the repetitiion. One get's it by the second chapter.
I don't usually go contrary to conventional wisdom, but . . . .......2007-06-25
I've got to disagree with all the five-star reviewers.
This book is thoroughly unremarkable, and contains some solid but very shallow advice. Is the greatest desire of your heart to be wealthy? Then you're ripe for exploitation by those who are intelligent enough to use you for their stepping-stone. Want to be the richest man in Babylon? Then write a book telling other people what it takes.
If you really don't understand that you need to invest your money in order to become wealthy (but really want to be rich) then you will get something out of this book. Otherwise, don't waste your time (little as it takes to get through it) and money.
Were it not for the eye-catching title and somewhat interesting use of parables, this book would have gone nowhere. As it is, it is an unremarkable effort, even for a man whose only other claim to fame was starting a mapping business that went under during the Great Depression.
Book Description
Irvin Muchnick — a widely published writer and nephew of the late, legendary St. Louis wrestling promoter Sam Muchnick — has produced a book unlike any other on the astonishing growth of professional wrestling and its profound impact on mainstream sports and society. In Wrestling Babylon, he traces the demise of wrestling’s old Mafia-like territories and the rise of a national marketing base thanks to cable television, deregulation and a culture-wide nervous breakdown. Naturally, the figure of WWE’s Vince McMahon lurks throughout, but equally evident is the public’s late-empire lust for bread, circuses, and blood. As this book demonstrates, the more cartoonishly unreal wrestling got, the more chillingly real it became.
What truly distinguishes Wrestling Babylon, however, is Muchnick’s ability to show how professional wrestling has become the ur-carnival for a culture that feeds on escapist displays of humiliation, revenge, fantasy characters, and sex. His People magazine article on Hulk Hogan blew the lid off the drug abuse of the sport’s signature superstar. His award-winning Penthouse profile of the ill-starred Von Erich clan was the first to connect the dots between wrestling, televangelism, and MTV-style production values. His never-before-published investigation of the death of Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka’s girlfriend suggests the cover-up of a murder. The book’s appendix — a comprehensive listing of the dozens of wrestlers who died prematurely over the last generation, with little or no attention — is both a valuable resource for wrestling historians and a shocking document of the ruthless way sports entertainment eats its own.

Quick read.......2007-09-09
This covers various scandals in the sport, and seems complete (ends before the Benoit deaths). It is readable for fans and non-fans alike. It ends with a chronological list of deaths of wrestlers under the age of 50 (and its a fairly long one). Could be more detailed.
Disappointing.......2007-08-29
I purchased this book after reading a slew of positive reviews. I was hoping it would be an extension of Mike Mooneyham's excellent book.
It was not. The stories were interesting, and the writing was good, but I was left wanting more details. It's essentially a collection of articles that Irv wrote for various publications. The very nature of an article would suggest that it's short, and I think he missed a golden opportunity to expand on the stories.
He's a talented writer, but this book felt lacking to me.
Very dated.......2007-08-27
Well, Irwin Muchnick (nephew to promotor Sam Muchnick but of no relation to writer Phil Mushnick) has collected some of his past magazine columns and combined them into a not-so-tell-all book about matters we pretty much know all about already. The majority of these articles are about steroids in wrestling. There's a section on the Snuka groupie death, sex in wrestling, and maybe the best section, the rise and fall of the Von Erichs. Lastly in the book is a (incomplete) listing of wrestlers who have died under the age of fifty but the book was set for publishing prior to Sherri Martel's passing and the Benoit murders. The most damaging part of this book is the dependence on the steroid articles. Also hurtful is the extreme dated-ness of the articles, it's nothing more than a collection of old articles thrown together in one cover. It would have helped if Irwin would have given some kind of decent update on the articles and mabe written something fresh and original to include.
Overall, lacksidasical (sp?), dated, and not terribly interesting anymore. Save your money and borrow it from a library or read it in the bookstore.
writters ego.......2007-07-21
i purchased this book to get an inside look of wrestling. after reading throught the writers $10 and $20 words i found nothing of interest. the writer (irvin muchnick) wrote this book at a level that most readers do not enjoy reading. to put this simple he had about three paragraphs of info on wrestling and surrounded it by alot of minutia. if there was a way i could get a refund i would try to get it.
Give Me a Break...........2007-06-06
This is the most pathetic waste of trees I have ever had the misfortune of reading. All the writer seems to care about is how horrible wrestling is, yet he is fixated on it. I find it interesting that someone who writes a so-called expose (some expose...almost every revelation is old news and common knowledge) on wrestling uses his uncle Sam, who was involved with wrestling in St. Louis, to sell the book. How hypocritical.
Book Description
In the colorful tradition of Hemingway's A Movable Feast, Jerry Hopkins recalls his first decade as a Bangkok expatriate by profiling 25 of the city's most unforgettable characters. Among them are the man thought to be the model for Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now, an advertising executive who photographs Thai bargirls for Playboy, an Oscar-winning screenwriter who moved there to die, a Catholic priest who has lived and worked in the Bangkok slums for 35 years, a circus dwarf turned computer programmer turned restaurateur, three Vietnam war helicopter pilots who
opened a go-go bar, a pianist at one of the world's best hotels who ended up on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list, a detective who tracks runaways who fake their deaths and a documentary filmmaker who lives with elephants. All of them "escaped" to Thailand to reinvent themselves and live out their fantasies in one of the world's most notorious cities.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely wonderful!.......2007-04-12
As an expat living in Bangkok, I can assure you Hopkins knows this city well, and the characters he describes are the most interesting bunch of characters you're ever likely to read about. Full of fun and panache on the surface, it also has a core of considerable importance: the fact that a person can reinvent him or herself and probably nowhere as easily as in Bangkok. Highly recommended.
Brings me back to Bangkok.......2007-03-11
I lived in Bangkok for a year and experienced many of the things written in this book first hand. Fortunately my wife is Thai and explained a lot of them but this book goes the extra mile and is an interesting and fun read.
It's easy to be a "fish out of water" in Bangkok if you're not familiar with the customs and etiquette. This book is highly recommended and Vermonter dot com approved!
An interesting and entertaining read.......2006-11-06
This book devotes one chapter each to a fascinating cross section of expatriate individuals( mainly Americans ) who, like the author, are now living, or have lived, in Thailand.
As Jerry Hopkins righly points out, adventurous travellers such as these do tend to be far more interesting than the average person who does not venture far, or for very long, from their native country and it's familair surroundings. This is well illustrated by the amazingly diverse characters and lives vivdly described here. Highly recommended.
The Most Off-Beat People You'll Meet--And Like!.......2006-08-03
I got this wonderful book last fall while I was visiting my "second home" of Chiang Mai, Thailand and fell in love with Jerry Hopkins' writing style at once. In this book, he has nailed so many of the "better known" expats in Thailand and done so in a honest way.
I have met some of these expats so I feel right at home with the manner Jerry uses, especially for my favorite author, Jason Schoonover.
With each chapter, Jerry gets into telling details about each man living permanently in Bangkok and why they decided to chuck living in the West to instead become expatriates in Thailand. I felt at home with each and every chapter!
If you want a better insight as to why certain people would rather be in Thailand than their native countries, purchase a copy of this wonderful book at once and have fun with it. I warn you, however, that as you get further and further into it, the more likely you'll be to buy some tickets for the next flight from your home to Bangkok!
