Book Description
The bestselling success book of all time is updated and revised with contemporary ideas and examples.
Think and Grow Rich has been called the "Granddaddy of All Motivational Literature." It was the first book to boldly ask, "What makes a winner?" The man who asked and listened for the answer, Napoleon Hill, is now counted in the top ranks of the world's winners himself.
The most famous of all teachers of success spent "a fortune and the better part of a lifetime of effort" to produce the "Law of Success" philosophy that forms the basis of his books and that is so powerfully summarized in this one.
In the original Think and Grow Rich, published in 1937, Hill draws on stories of Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and other millionaires of his generation to illustrate his principles. In the updated version, Arthur R. Pell, Ph.D., a nationally known author, lecturer, and consultant in human resources management and an expert in applying Hill's thought, deftly interweaves anecdotes of how contemporary millionaires and billionaires, such as Bill Gates, Mary Kay Ash, Dave Thomas, and Sir John Templeton, achieved their wealth. Outmoded or arcane terminology and examples are faithfully refreshed to preclude any stumbling blocks to a new generation of readers.

Great Book.......2007-10-10
If you really takes in and apply the principles in this book, you can't help but be successful.
Excellent book!.......2007-09-17
I read this book as a follow up to The Secret. Napoleon Hill was way ahead of his time - the book is a bit quaint - written in a different era - however, the concepts are very timely and thought provoking. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the Law of Attraction as it applies to business success.
Wealth Generation.......2007-09-15
The is a classic. Any one that is an entrepreneur or is seeking financial freedom the is a must have. Every page has information jems that will make you rich if you apply the principles discussed with the pages.
A must read for anyone who can read!.......2007-08-31
This is a great book, now that I have gotten out of foreclosure I can focus on building my confidence and wealth. Thanks Foreclosure Workbook and Think and Grow Rich! The two best books I have read in years.
Still waiting for the grow rich part.......2007-08-15
I have a much beloved copy of this book but thought that a fresh copy might offer fresh perspective. The ideas haven't aged over time, even though a slew of rip off ideas have taken over. If you only buy one inspirational book it should be this one.

Victor Mancini is a ruthless con artist. Victor Mancini is a med-school dropout who's taken a job playing an Irish indentured servant in a colonial-era theme park in order to help care for his Alzheimer's-afflicted mother. Victor Mancini is a sex addict. Victor Mancini is a direct descendant of Jesus Christ. All of these statements about the protagonist of Choke are more or less true. Welcome, once again, to the world of Chuck Palahniuk.
"Art never comes from happiness." So says Mancini's mother only a few pages into the novel. Given her own dicey and melodramatic style of parenting, you would think that her son's life would be chock-full of nothing but art. Alas, that's not the case. In the fine tradition of Oedipus, Stephen Dedalus, and Anthony Soprano, Victor hasn't quite reconciled his issues with his mother. Instead, he's trawling sexual-addiction recovery meetings for dates and purposely choking in restaurants for a few moments of attention. Longing for a hug, in other words, he's settling for the Heimlich.
Thematically, this is pretty familiar Palahniuk territory. It would be a pity to disclose the surprises of the plot, but suffice it to say that what we have here is a little bit of Tom Robbins's Another Roadside Attraction, a little bit of Don DeLillo's The Day Room, and, well, a little bit of Fight Club. Just as with Fight Club and the other two novels under Palahniuk's belt, we get a smattering of gloriously unflinching sound bites, including this skeptical bit on prayer chains: "A spiritual pyramid scheme. As if you can gang up on God. Bully him around."
Whether this is the novel that will break Palahniuk into the mainstream is hard to say. For a fourth book, in fact, the ratio of iffy, "dude"-intensive dialogue to interesting and insightful passages is a little higher than we might wish. In the end, though, the author's nerve and daring pull the whole thing off--just barely. And what's next for Victor Mancini's creator? Leave the last word to him, declaring as he does in the final pages: "Maybe it's our job to invent something better.... What it's going to be, I don't know." --Bob Michaels
Book Description
Victor Mancini, a medical-school dropout, is an antihero for our deranged times. Needing to pay elder care for his mother, Victor has devised an ingenious scam: he pretends to choke on pieces of food while dining in upscale restaurants. He then allows himself to be “saved” by fellow patrons who, feeling responsible for Victor’s life, go on to send checks to support him. When he’s not pulling this stunt, Victor cruises sexual addiction recovery workshops for action, visits his addled mom, and spends his days working at a colonial theme park. His creator, Chuck Palahniuk, is the visionary we need and the satirist we deserve.
Download Description
From the author of the international sensation Fight Club, here is a powerful (and hilarious) novel about love and strife between mothers and sons, the addictive power of sex, the terrors of aging, the ugly truth about historical theme parks, and much else.
Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk's controversial and blazingly original debut novel, introduced a fresh and even renegade talent to American fiction, one who has retooled the classic black humor of Terry Southern and Kurt Vonnegut for the lunacy of the millennial age. In his new novel, Choke, he gives readers a vision of life and love and sex and mortality that is both chillingly brilliant and teeth-rattlingly funny.
Victor Mancini, a dropout from medical school, has devised a complicated scam to pay for his mother's elder care: Pretend to be choking on a piece of food in a restaurant and the person who "saves you" will feel responsible for the rest of his life. Multiply that a couple of hundred times and you generate a healthy flow of checks, week in, week out.
Between fake choking gigs, Victor works at Colonial Dunsboro with a motley group of losers and stoners trapped in 1734, cruises sex addiction groups for action ("You put twenty sexaholics around a table night after night and don't be surprised."), and visits his mother, whose anarchic streak made his childhood a mad whirl and whose Alzheimer's disease now hides what may be the startling truth about his (possibly divine?) parentage. An antihero for our deranging times, Victor's whole existence is a struggle to wrest an identity from overwhelming forces. His creator, Chuck Palahniuk, is the visionary we need and the satirist we deserve.
"Palahniuk is one of the freshest, most intriguing voices to appear in a long time. He rearranges Vonnegut's sly humor, DeLillo's mordant social analysis, and Pynchon's antic surrealism (or is it R. Crumb's?) into a gleaming puzzle palace all his own."
NEWSDAY
"Palahniuk displays a Swiftian gift for satire, as well as a knack for crafting mesmerizing sentences that loom with stark, prickly prose and repetitive rhythms."
SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER
"Even I can't write this well."
THOM JONES
"Palahniuk's language is urgent and tense, touched with psychopathic brilliance, his images dead-on accurate....[He] is an author who makes full use of the alchemical powers of fiction to synthesize a universe that mirrors our own fiction as a way of illuminating the world without obliterating its complexity."
L.A. WEEKLY
"Maybe our generation has found its Don DeLillo."

Interesting characters and good story.......2007-10-09
This story is entertaining and fun to read. I enjoy the writer's style a lot and think that for the most part it is pretty clever. I really love when I read a story that makes me sympathize with an ordinarily unsympathetic character and this book does that very effectively. I would recommend this to fans of Palahniuk and anyone who is looking for something a little different.
A side splitter for those with strong stomachs........2007-10-04
This is perhaps Palahniuk's funniest book. It may read like porn but is in fact a pitch perfect tour de force that only Palahniuk could write.
SO Overrated.......2007-09-19
I heard so many good things about this book, so many people raved about it, how it "changed their outlook on life", I felt compelled to read it. I want my time back. This book is garbage. I'm not saying this because it offended me, because it did not in the least (one of my favorite books is "Filth" by Irvine Welsh for comparison). What did offend me was that this book was utter nonsense. If reading about the exploits of a sex-addict makes you want to change the world, go read Gene Simmons biography for christ sake.
The message of this book (which I will not give away here even though I should to save you the time and effort) has been done so many times before, it seems as though Palahniuk just used it as a means to convey his idea of obscenity on the reader. Glorified depravity is fine if it has a legitimate point. Here it does not. It's obscene for the sake of being obscene. It has nothing to do with the story, other than to make the main character seem worse than he is...can he be redeemed in the end???
Don't bother finding out.
What would Jesus NOT do?.......2007-09-14
This novel was nothing short of amazing. For serious, it was a delicious and witty meal that satisfies your intellectual appetite and makes you want to gag at the same time. Loved every bite of it.

Not For Everyone.......2007-09-12
I picked this up for amusing reading during my vacation this summer and I tore through it in only a couple of days. It's easy reading, funny, but also deeply satirical.
However, if you don't like modernist literature, and you didn't enjoy Palahniuk's other books, you might get turned off by the style.
I personally felt the ending was a bit weak, but the overall story was so strong it makes up for it. The scenarios are so unique and the relationships he creates are at once so real and so superficial, I just like this kind of writing.

In 1927, Walter Evans-Wentz published his translation of an obscure Tibetan Nyingma text and called it the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Popular Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche has transformed that ancient text, conveying a perennial philosophy that is at once religious, scientific, and practical. Through extraordinary anecdotes and stories from religious traditions East and West, Rinpoche introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, moving gradually to the topics of death and dying. Death turns out to be less of a crisis and more of an opportunity. Concepts such as reincarnation, karma, and bardo and practices such as meditation, tonglen, and phowa teach us how to face death constructively. As a result, life becomes much richer. Like Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Sogyal Rinpoche opens the door to a full experience of death. It is up to the reader to walk through. --Brian Bruya
Book Description
This acclaimed spiritual masterpiece is widely regarded as one of the most complete and authoritative presentations of the Tibetan Buddhist teachings ever written. A manual for life and death and a magnificent source of sacred inspiration from the heart of the Tibetan tradition, The Tibetan Book Of Living and Dying provides a lucid and inspiring introduction to the practice of meditation, to the nature of mind, to karma and rebirth, to compassionate love and care for the dying, and to the trials and rewards of the spiritual path.

An extraordinary book........2007-10-04
"Just as if you put your finger into water, it will get wet, and if you put it into fire, it will burn, so if you invest your mind in the wisdom mind of the Buddha, it will transform into their wisdom nature."
Considered by many to be the most astute interpretation for Western culture of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and the Tibetan Book of the Living, this contemporary classic by Sogyal Rinpoche blends ancient ideas of Tibetan Buddhism with a fresh perspective from a master who has spent a good deal of time teaching and lecturing in the West.
It is most moving to read his prologue especially, in which he deals with the death of his master, for which he was present. The great spiritual process of learning to die, before dying, as the secret to life, is explored in this section. Much of what is now being reflected upon in the new spirituality of Echart Tolle and others is covered here with clarity and a certain depth not found in other western spiritual classics.
On a personal note, I revisited this book after dealing with a lost love and found it to be the pure water of the dharma that I needed in order to overcome the horrors of such a loss. I would encourage anyone to read this amazing book, but especially those who are in a place of pain, hopelessness, or suffering in this very moment. Strike while the iron is hot! The terrible, clear light of grief is in fact a step into profound self-awareness. It was an honor to read Rinpoche and to be touched by his sincerity and clear mastery of the practice.
First most lifechanging book I've ever read.......2007-10-02
I reviewed the second most life changing book I've ever read, so I figured I should come back and review the first most life changing book I've ever read, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. After my husband died, I wanted to know what happened after you died. He was my one and only true love. When I read this book, I realized that Sogyal Rinpoche had some knowledge of what he was talking about, and this book had all the answers to the mystery of life and death for those with the wisdom to recognize it, and the determination to study and practice it. I read the book 3 times in a row right away right after I bought it.
A few years later after reading the book I joined Rigpa and took the classes they offered. After few years of practice, the cube farm way of life no longer made sense to me. So, much to the chagrin of all my relatives, I ditched my 6 figure Silicon Valley job to go work on a horse ranch by the beach!
Maybe the book should come with a warning label. Warning, this book could be hazardous to your income! Don't feel bad for me tho because I have a sweet IRA which I invest myself so I'm all set for retirement. You can feel jealous instead :-)
Actually, after some years of Buddhist practice, my clarity of mind has improved so I think if I ever had to go back to my old work, I would get all those enterprise-wide IT projects done better, faster, and everyone would have a lot more fun along the way.
Understandable at Last.......2007-08-23
This book makes a complex Buddhist belief understandable for most. The author illustrates principals with examples from his own life. Interspersed with poetry and songs, it is an insightful study on a most important subject.
Nice book.......2007-05-21
A well written book by an author who understands the Tibetan teachings of impermanence. This book is an easy read for the novice student of Budhism, but I wouldn't recommend picking it up as a complete beginner. The book is best suited for early students who are at the least familiar with Tibetan teachings and philosophies.
It is an excellent companion to the Tibetan Book of the dead as it will help clear up some of the things explained in that text in an easy to read and understand fashion. The author makes good use of personal stories, and conventional teachings, and helps to simplify a very demanding aspect of Buddhist study.
the tibetan book of living and dying.......2007-05-14
I find it hard to fully express how important this book is.
The subject may seem morbid but the contra is true, like the bardol thodol it stands alone in spiritual writings.

Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed to Do and What To Do About It.......2006-08-30
Lot's of effective hands on things you can use immediately. Great use of your time & enjoyable to read as well.
A common workplace question definitively answered........2006-05-02
The truth is that in this book, as in others expressing simple truth, the value may be in the reminder. Others who have reviewed this book seem to think that its content may be somewhat simplistic, or maybe just basic stuff. My observation is that yes, for me, much of the information in the book is basic, the ideas are not new to me, nor are the recommended responses. The fact remains that in too many work places productivity is less than optimum and is not what it might be because of the specific reasons offered in this little book.
Whether you have ever been expected to manage employees or not, you will relate to the content of this small volume. Those who manage others will gather hints on how to better understand their reports and will receive suggestions that if used will allow them to become better managers. All employees will gain a perspective from which they will be better able to communicate the frustrations they may be experiencing in their work situation.
This short book should be read by all who work.
Good Basics and Several Great Tips.......2006-05-01
Talk about a super long title that clearly states what a book is about! When you pick up "Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed To Do and What To Do About It" by Ferdinand F. Fournies, there's no doubt what you think you are getting. The question is of course if you DO get that and how valuable the information is.
There are apparently 16 different reasons why an employee might not do what they should. These are: They don't know why, they don't know how, they don't know what, they think your way won't work, they think their way is better, they think something else is more important, there are no positive consequences, they think they ARE doing it, they are rewarded for NOT doing it, they are punished for doing it, they anticipate negative consequences, there are no negative consequences for NOT doing it, there are obstacles they can't fix, they have personal limits, they have personal problems, and the task is simply impossible. That's quite a lot of reasons for one "problem"! Just having that list can really be helpful. A manager who thinks "My employee is simply an idiot! I told him what to do!" might take a step back and realize there really IS a problem that can be fixed, once it is identified.
I realize that a lot of these items are common sense - but it's amazing how many times in the workplace that I've seen bad managers completely ignore the real problem and just yell at an employee. That rarely helps!
Now, while the basic list is good, I do have some issues with this book. The first is that the book opens telling you "Now a manager could be assaulted or killed by the employee [for not handling problems effectively]." Good God Almighty. Talk about a nasty way to sell a book - "read me or you could DIE!!!"
The book does a good job of laying out each type of problem in detail, and then giving specific solutions. You might say "they're common sense" but obviously if so many managers out there are NOT handling these situations well, they need a little kick in the behind. Maybe they're just too stressed and aren't actually thinking about the problem. Maybe this book will help give them that extra insight they need into using a good solution.
One thing that bothers me is that the book makes it seem that every problem CAN be solved by following these few easy steps. There's a small FAQ in the back that says in essence "Oh yeah, sometimes this fails and you'll have to demote or fire the person." It would have been more helpful if in each section there were the regular tips, but also "drastic steps" and then "when to give up". I suppose they want to be positive - but if they give you only a few things to try, and they aren't working, it would be good to have a progression of what to do next. To keep trying those same things becomes an exercise in futility and frustration. In fact, it's sort of funny, he says at one point that, if these tips don't work, go buy my next book to learn what to do then :)
Still, it's a good basic primer for the new manager of how to handle a variety of situations. I definitely have worked in many situations where managers did NOT know these things and the environment suffered because of it. If you feel like you already know these things, borrow the book at the library and skim through - you might pick up a tip or two. If you're a new manager, then I would suggest buying this. It's the sort of book that you read in the bathroom, going just over a single chapter, and focussing on how to handle that one specific issue. You're probably going to run into all of these issues over time, if you stay on a managerial path.
Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed To Do and What To Do About It.......2005-09-03
This is a well written, easy to read, common sense guide for managers and supervisors of all levels of experience. You don't have to be an MBA to understand and use the information provided.
Good Stuff.......2005-08-30
This is a basic book for all new managers. It tell you about all the things they don't teach you in school and gives you concrete action plans to take away the negative impact of the problem. The key areas are ranked as to their occurrence in the management environment. It is a quick read and an even faster process of applying the essentials. Great Book! I am recommending it to my students.
Book Description
Globalization is the greatest reorganization of the world since the Industrial Revolution, and is threatening to hollow out America's middle class.
_______________________________________
Millions of Americans are preoccupied with the outsourcing of American jobs and the threat of global economic competition. From boardrooms to classrooms to kitchen tables and water coolers, globalization has become a hot topic of discussion and debate everywhere --including a best-selling book by a famous journalist. However, Thomas Friedman's runaway bestseller, The World is Flat, is
dangerous. Friedman makes "arguments by assertion," assertions based not on documented facts, but on stories from friends and elite CEOs he visits --not even one footnote reference. Yet his book influences business and government leaders around the globe. By what it leaves out, it does nothing more than misinform the American people and our leaders.
Aronica and Ramdoo show that the world isn't flat; it's tilted in favor of unfettered global corporations that exploit cheap labor in China, India and beyond. This concise monograph brings clarity to many of Friedman's misconceptions, and explores nine key issues that Friedman largely ignores, including the hollowing out of America's debt-ridden middle class. To create a fair and balanced exploration of globalization, the authors cite the work of experts that Friedman fails to incorporate, including Nobel laureate and former Chief Economist at the World Bank, Dr. Joseph Stiglitz.
Refreshingly, you can now gain new insights into globalization without weeding through Friedman's almost 600 pages of ill-informed, grandiloquent prose and bafflegab.
Customer Reviews:
What do economists think?.......2007-09-24
We've used this book in my globalization course, and it certainly sparked the discussion on this crucial subject. Don't read Friedman without also reading this book.
A Perspective from India.......2007-09-12
Thomas Friedman's book was triggered by the CEO of an Indian software
company in Bangalore who said the playing field was being leveled. Then,
as only a celebrity pundit can do, Friedman spun a sound bite, "The World
is Flat," and garnished story after story from his elite contacts,
while avoiding contact with the likes of Dr. Vandana Shiva, Director
of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology & Ecology and others
who have a different perspective on what's really happening in India.
Here's a snippet from Dr. Shiva in Aronica and Ramdoo's book,
"Friedman presents a 0.1% picture and hides 99.9%. And in the 99.9%
are Monsanto's seed monopolies and the suicides of thousands of
farmers. In the hidden 99.9% economy are thousands of tribal children
in Orissa, Maharashtra, Rajasthan who died of hunger because the public
distribution system for food has been dismantled to create markets for
agribusiness. The world of the 99.9% has grown poorer because of the
economic globalisation. Free-trade is about corporate freedom and citizen
disenfranchisement. What Friedman is presenting as a new `flatness'
is in fact a new caste system, a new Brahminism, locked in hierarchies of
exclusion. By presenting open sourcing in the same category as outsourcing
and off shore production, Friedman hides corporate greed, corporate
monopolies and corporate power, and presents corporate globalisation as
human creativity and freedom. This is deliberate dishonesty, not just
result of flat vision."
Small wonder that at the last minute, Friedman cancelled the appointment he had with Dr. Shiva.
Perhaps Friedman could have borrowed a more appropriate title for his
book from former Harvard B-school professor, David Korten's book,
"When Corporations Rule the World."
If you want to understand the megatrend of our time, this book
offers a great starting point.
For someone looking for a more complete picture of globalization,
Aronica and Ramdoo offer a concise, but comprehensive overview.
And if you want more, the book provides a roadmap of extensive
resources for further exploration. Aronica and Ramdoo are
pro-globalization, but open your eyes to the many forms of
globalization that Friedman ignores. There is also a
companion web site which contains a number of links
to articles and presentations from some of the most qualified thinkers
on globalization: www.mkpress.com/flat
This is simply a GREAT BOOK!!.......2007-09-11
This book provides an informed review and critical analysis of Thomas Friedman's book of the same name "The World is Flat". Like Clyde Prestowitz's book "Three Billion New Capitalists" this book provides a thoughtful and reasoned review of the significant demographaic and geo-political shifts that are taking place today.
For anyone looking for a thoughtful, intelligent review and critique of today's modern geographic, political, economic situation or otherwise trying to understand the great shifts in economic and political power moving to China and India and away from the rest of the world, this book is an important read.
Personal attacks and sarcasm.......2007-09-09
This book is simply awful. There is plenty to criticize about Friedman's The World is Flat, but this book is so poorly written with so few specific points that I can't recommend it to anyone.
The book does help make it clear that many critics of globalization have a problem with corporations driving the process, not with globalization itself. It also mentions many other books, probably all of which are better than this one. I'll give it two stars for that, but I'm being generous. Don't read this book.
I've just started reading Stiglitz's Making Globalization Work. Read that book instead. Specific criticisms of globalization followed by specific recommendations to fix the problems. You'll find neither in The World is Flat? You will literally learn more about globalization by reading Wikipedia's page on the topic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globalization) than you will by reading this book.
Specific complaints:
First, much of the book consists of personal attacks against Friedman. For example, they spend time discussing a *rumor* that he has clothes FedExed to him while his travels. So what? Actually, that sounds like a great idea if you have the money.
Second, much of what they criticize is really quite petty. For example, Friedman spells "workflow software" as "work flow software". Half a page gets devoted to that extra space.
Third, several pages of the book are devoted to comments off of Amazon's customer review sections. So you find out some people don't like his book. Amazon tells me that for free.
Fourth, pointless sarcasm appears on nearly every page. For example, on page 58 we find out that, "Seldom has there appeared such a superficial treatment of Ricardo's 'comparative advantage,' that is, except perhaps in some 11th grade civics class."
In short, the entire book is Amazon and Wikipedia quotes, strung together with personal attacks and sarcasm. Even the valid criticisms of Friedman's work are rarely followed by anything useful, like a discussion of alternative viewpoints. Read Stiglitz or Wikipedia instead of this book.
Misleading Title.......2007-09-05
I was in a hurry when I ordered this book. I saw the title, but ignored or at least missed the significance of the phrase "A Critical Analysis of". I thought I was ordering Friedman's book itself. It sat on my shelf for 4 months before I got around to reading it, and only when I opened it up to read did I realize I had wasted $16. I tried to read it, but having not read the original, it was pretty meaningless. Was this my mistake, or did they entitle the book to entrap buyers like me?

A great book.......2007-05-09
This book is fantastic! The author has an incredible ability to explain complex phenomenon in a concise manner that is easy to understand. I learned a great deal from this book.
Technical or NOT technical tips on good sound!.......2007-05-05
I received a copy of this book when I was preparing the curriculum for a college course I taught as an adjunct professor for two years. I believe it gave my students not only a good classroom study book, but also a useful reference book for the "real-world" after graduation! Scott Stark gives great rule-of-thumb knowledge, as well as deeper technical fundamentals behind the knob turning and fader moving decisions that every sound engineer will face at the helm of a live sound reinforcement system, no matter whether for 100 or 100,000 listeners!
Definitive Handbook on Learning to do Sound.......2007-03-15
I've used this book myself and have been referred to it by the best sound guys around. Great for beginners wanting to get a handle on how a sound system works from power amps, pre-amps, microphone differences to why feedback happens and how to stop it, and lots of other practical advice on how to mix live sound. Good for more advanced sound people who want to advance their skills.
Plenty of easily accesible information.......2007-02-03
I am a classically trained musician working as a secondary school teacher, and I bought this book to help me understand how to use amplifiers, PA's, mixing desks etc as I am teaching a 'Live Music' subject. It has plenty of information without getting too technical and is written in an accessible and interesting way. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a basic mathematical and musical understanding of sound.
big n, thick.......2007-01-16
there is alot in here. a lot to read that is... if you are looking for a lengthy breakdown on
what sound waves are made of and how they react... if you want a deep understanding
of what happens in a subwoofer... this could be for you. It has the look and feel of a
course manual... there is a lot to take in.
No quick fix. Very involved. But if that is what you want... its all in here.

Stephanie Plum, girl bounty hunter, the terror of Trenton, the bane of her boyfriend Joe Morelli's existence, and the delight of her crazy grandma's heart, is in the wrong place at the wrong time--as usual. Just happening to be indulging her nachos jones at a local deli when it's robbed by the notorious Red Devils, Plum is the eye witness who could put the gang leader, known as the Junkman, behind bars... if he just lets her live long enough. Looking for a place to hide out from the killer until the cops catch up with him, Stephanie sneaks into her fellow bounty hunter Ranger's apartment without telling Morelli, who's not overly fond of him. All the usual suspects in this long-running series are along for a wilder than ever ride, including Lula the gun-toting ex-hooker, Grandma Mazur, Stephanie's pregnant sister Valerie and her fiancé, as well as a host of minor characters who bring Trenton's seedier environs to life. Ten Big Ones is another madcap caper by a writer whose fans will doubtless catapult this easy beach read to the top of the bestseller list. --Jane Adams
Book Description
She's accidentally destroyed a dozen cars. She's a target for every psycho and miscreant this side of the Jersey Turnpike. He mother's convinced she'll end up dead....or worse, without a man. She's Stephanie Plum and she kicks butt for a living (well, she thought it would sound good to put it that way....)It begins as an innocent trip to the deli-mart, on a quest for nachos. But Stephanie Plum and her partner, Lula, are clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time. A robbery leads to an explosion, which leads to the destruction of yet another car. It would be just another day in the life of Stephanie Plum....except that she becomes the target of a gang. And the target of an even scarier, more dangerous force that comes to Trenton. With super bounty hunter Ranger out of town (and Stephanie on the outs with vice cop Morelli), she finds herself alone, with a decision to make: how to protect herself and where to hide while on the hunt for a killer known as the Junkman. There's only one safe place, and it has Ranger's name all over it-if she can find it. And if the Junkman doesn't find her first. With Lula riding shotgun and Grandma Mazur on the loose, Stephanie Plum is racing against the clock in her most suspenseful novel yet. Ten Big Ones is page-turning entertainment and Janet Evanovich is the best there is.

fabuloso!.......2007-07-30
Like Cheez Doodles: not nutritious, but yummy and fun.......2007-07-16
I usually don't go in for this kind of "beach-reading", but I make an exception for the Stephanie Plum series because they're so much fun. I figured out a few books back that the key to enjoying this series is to think of them as purely entertainment with very little relation to reality, kind of like a working-class James Bond, but female. With a donut addiction.
Stephanie Plum and her two uber-alpha-men, Morelli and Ranger, are as bold and brave as ever in Ten Big Ones, but I took one star off this review partly because their ongoing love-triangle seems a little bit stagnant in this installment.
The amusing minor characters' story arcs that flow throughout the series are as enjoyable to read as always(Stephanie's sister Valerie and her hapless fiance Albert Kloughn, Lula the ex-ho, et al). However, Grandma Mazur needs to find a new hobby or maybe a suitor, as she seems to be stuck in a rut. We wouldn't want her to get too bored and start using that piece in her purse just for the hahas.
As usual, Janet has added a few oddball characters to the mix in Ten Big Ones, and one that I'm hoping to see return in future books is Sally Sweet because he's so f-f-fudging funny. I didn't really like the Frito-Lay lady and her story very much, another reason for only four stars.
As for the plot of this one, I'll leave that to other reviewers to dissect, except to say that the ending was Wam! Pow! unexpectedly outrageous and funny, so kudos to you Ms. Evanovich.
Whenever I find myself thinking "that would never happen in real life" (and this happens more and more with each Stephanie Plum book) I just remind myself that it's okay to enjoy this kind of read once in a while, so long as I brush my teeth afterwards.
And I just have to add that even though he is one of the more improbable characters here, I still have the major hots for Ranger.
One of my favorite of the series.......2007-06-12
I'm currently rereading the Stephanie Plum series in order to refresh my history for Book 13. I'm surprised to read that some reviewers detested this book, because it is one of my favorites of the series. It's another one that will cause you to laugh-out-loud with the trouble that Stephanie and her cohorts get into/cause.
In Book 10, Stephanie gets fingered by the Slayer gang in Trenton and is marked for, well, elimination. Not to give too much away of the plot, but since she is marked with a big bullseye, she needs a place to hide out that won't put her family or friends in jeopardy. Where would you go? She tracks down the BatCave (and if you read the books, you know where I'm talking about.)
As far as continuity issues with the editing regarding the Porsche/SUV - there is no problem. Evanovich is referring to the Porsche Cayanne SUV that they were using, sometimes using Porsche and sometimes the SUV to indicate it had more than 2 seats.
I would have preferred another chapter that wrapped up the living conditions for Stephanie after the climax of the plot, but knowing Evanovich, she just wanted to let us all stew over what it all meant until the next book came out ... and who am I to question the master! :)
stepanie does it again!.......2007-06-08
I have read all the previous Stephanie Plum novels and enjoyed this one as well. She has a great sense of humor (love Grandma) and the twists are just enough for light reading
The tenth Stephanie Plum story and still fun.......2007-06-01
Janet Evanovich is a very popular writer, her books consistently appearing on the best sellers lists. Her most popular series is the Stephanie Plum series which contains the tales of a lingerie buyer-turned-bounty hunter.
In this, the 10th (hence the title) book in the line, Stephanie becomes the target of a gang assassin known as Junkman. While trying to balance doing her job, preparing for her sister's wedding and not getting killed, she stays pretty busy.
The writing is light-hearted and Stephanie, along with Lulu, her 'plus sized' coworker and Connie, her friend with mafia contacts, get into very interesting situations. Sally Sweet, her hairy, cross-dressing male friend just make the situations more interesting.
On the romantic side, Stephanie must balance her devotion to Cop and boyfriend Joe Morelli with her increasing physical attraction to the man in black, Ranger, her mentor and hero in the bounty hunting world.
This story is a lot of fun. Read it.
Book Description

Jones & Jenna stole the show!.......2007-09-30
It seemes like I waited forever to get Dallas&Amy's story and while Into The Dark did become an action-packed tale, I can't say the romance between Dallas and Amy moved me. There seemed to be much more between them when they were in the Philippines so that in the end, this romance ends like a shipboard one. Once they reach home ground, the magic fizzles out. This was how I felt about Amy and that's a shame because the book is fast-paced and would have made an excellent movie.
Somehow, the emotion was missing from this book and it shouldn't have been the case because Dallas is supposed to be one tortured soldier, suffering from PTSD but Ms Gerard has failed to pull the reader into his tortured world because she chose 'telling' rather than 'showing'. As a result, when she tells me Dallas can't see a future for him with Amy, I was wondering why not. Sure, his team members got killed or injured in a mission but all soldiers suffer that kind of loss in war time. I didn't get to share even a little bit of what those teammates had with Dallas so when Ms Gerard fast forwards the story, Dallas' reasons for his depression got lost.
As for Amy, I just could not buy into her reason for going after her grandfather. But I guess I don't understand this need for revenge, especially if in Amy's case it was just to ask him why he did what he did. IMO, that was such a dumbass thing to do. Totally TSTL, which makes me feel that Dallas and Amy's romance wouldn't survive in real life.
But I am SO intrigued by Gabriel Jones! He and Jenna truly stole the show from the depressed Dallas and the TSTL Amy. Okay, TSTL is too harsh a word for Amy because she is a very capable and self-sufficient woman. I liked that she had no qualms killing her would-be asassin. I liked that Jones told her she could watch his back anytime. But her reason for going after her grandfather was still stupid.
Obvious Flaws.......2007-09-11
I won't get into the plot here, as many others have. I will just say that I was more excited to meet the men working with Dallas and Amy in Argentina, as they are sure to be featured in future books. Those guys had more charisma in their few pages than Dallas and Amy in all 300+ pages.
My largest pet peeve by far is how quickly Amy recovered from her trauma in the Philippines. Come on - six months later and she is suddenly an expert shot and good enough at an Israeli martial art to take down a Recon Marine? How much disbelief should I suspend here!?! I love to escape to someone else's world, but at least make it somewhat believable! And that is discounting the obvious mistake of using the term "revolver" to refer to a handgun with a clip!
Into the Dark .......2007-08-13
When Dallas Garrett and his brothers embarked on a rescue mission to the Philippines, they never expected to liberate another prisoner. Tortured and violated, Amy Walker's strength and spirit touches something deep within Dallas. Both battle scarred, they share an unspoken bond. While Dallas wants to protect Amy, he can't promise her anything more. Amy has more pressing matters anyway. Even though she has her suspicions, she needs to learn for certain who masterminded her abduction...before they try again.
Once back in the States, Amy quietly vanishes out of Dallas' life. Now six months later, Amy is closer to finding her answers, but the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous her quest becomes. Running out of options, she turns to the only person she trusts, Dallas. In the months since Amy's disappearance, Dallas has not forgotten her. When she crashes back into his life, the urge to protect her is just as strong, yet Amy isn't the same woman he saved. The flare of attraction the two first felt is now a blaze that neither can control. Thrust into a conspiracy bigger than either imagined, can Amy and Dallas find a safe way out of their troubles? Can either deny the love and passion they both feel?
Ever since reading To the Brink and getting my first peek at Dallas and Amy, I have been dying to read their story. With Into the Dark, Cindy Gerard delivers a heart-pounding, sensuous thriller that's totally worth the wait! Amy has evolved since I first met her. She is a strong, capable woman who's ready for anything. Tortured by his past, Dallas isn't sure he has anything to offer Amy, but he proves time and time again what a good and worthy man he is. The simmering sensuality that builds between the pair boils over in the most captivating way. I'll admit that at first, I had a hard time buying the secret cabal plotting world domination, but then Dallas wasn't believing it at the start either. Quickly however, I was swept up in the adventure, and Ms. Gerard made the story work. I also loved the secondary characters that teamed up with Dallas and Amy. Although this is the last Bodyguards book, I hope those two get their own series.
Reading like a big-budget Hollywood action-adventure, Into the Dark offers all the thrills and chills any romance lover could want! While I highly recommend Into the Dark, I would suggest folks also read the third Bodyguards book, To the Brink first. To the Brink provides a good bit of back-story and makes Into the Dark that much better.

Not What I Expected.......2007-07-22
First of all let me say I love all the books in this series except for this one so far. I haven't read Manny's book yet. I was so looking forward to Dallas and Amy's story since their introduction. I wanted to feel their connection that they felt in that book but it was not meant to be. This book felt rushed to me. There's a lot of grammatical errors and plot holes. Just think Ms. Gerard didn't take her time. There really wasn't a build up to this one and the first time they re-meet it was so rushed and not wrote out. It was weird. I'm not going into the plot since so many on here already have but I just felt it was not as realistic as her other books. I just felt like it wasn't given the care that the others were. It's still a good book but it's not great. I loved that it gave you updates on the other family members.
A phenominal conclusion to Cindy Gerard's Bodyguard series.......2007-07-17
"Cindy Gerard has outdone herself penning a phenomenal conclusion with INTO THE DARK, Book #6 in her The Bodyguards series for St. Martin's (June 2007). INTO THE DARK sheds light on what has happened to terrorist hostage, Amy Walker, who first appeared in TO THE BRINK (1/06) after being rescued in the jungle by former Force Recon Marine turned
bodyguard, Dallas Garrett, and then disappeared upon their return to the U.S. Six months later Dallas, who runs E.D.E.N., Inc. protection agency with his siblings, is ready to leave for a trip to look for Amy when she shows up and collapses on his West Palm Beach doorstep. Dallas is sure Amy's in trouble when she mumbles about not wanting to be found. After she rests and they make love, Amy tries to sneak out on Dallas again because she doesn't want to put him in danger. But Dallas convinces Amy to confide in him and she divulges an incredible story about her German physician grandfather being in the SS and doing mind-control work for the Nazi's during and after World War II with her mother as one of his test subjects. Amy has been working in a mental hospital in New York where her mother is a patient while doing research to locate her grandfather and the secret organization that experiments on people against their wills. When someone tries to kill her after leaving work one night, Amy knows she's in terrible danger. Dallas has his own demons dealing with PTSD from his military missions. Amy's research trail, thanks to a journalist's article, leads her and Dallas to Argentina. With the help of a mysterious mercenary, who saves their lives, they're determined to locate and stop this organization from their evil work. Here is everything a reader could ask for in a great romantic suspense: beloved characters, riveting suspense, thrilling adventure and pulse-pounding passion! INTO THE DARK is utterly brilliant and firmly cements Cindy Gerard as a key author in the romantic suspense genre! - Patricia Rouse, Rouse's Romance Readers Groups

What Smart Women Know is a straightforward and honest guide from women who have learned the hard way how to be smart about men.
Customer Reviews:
A must-read.......2007-04-11
This book is so real, cuts through the b.s., and tells women what is essential for keeping sane in our relationships with men.
I picked up "What Smart Women Know" in a bookstore about 15 years ago, when I was 21 and in a bad relationship. I have kept this book, and I know it has helped me through many other relationships, over the past 15 years.
I am not even going to cite sayings from the book, because I couldn't do it justice that way.
I feel lucky I wandered into that book store and grabbed this book. I have read many other self-help/relationship books, and they did not help me in any way near as much as "What Smart Women Know"
I think many of us would ultimately get the love we deserve if we paid atttention to much of the advice in this book.
Go get it, Sisters!
one of my favorites.......2007-04-05
I bought this book for the first time after my first marriage ended (should have read the book before I married him). Not long after, I thought I was in love with a man who had some interesting problems. Thank goodness I read the book and realized that I couldn't help him. I've given multiple copies of this book away and have loaned it out to many others. It's currently on loan to a friend who is going through a divorce. I'm married to a wonderful man and I like to flip through the book just to remind myself how lucky I really am to have a man who loves me and respects me. He understands me and I understand him. I love being a smart woman because I'm a happy woman. I'm about to order this book for my niece. She doesn't yet know what smart women know.
Take it from me ...........2007-03-08
I am a smart professional woman who has (and still is) learning the "hard way" about relationships. This book is an awesome resource for a quick pick-me-up. It's super easy to read ... You can turn to any page and start reading without being lost. I've "doggy-eared" so many pages that I want to remember so I can flip to them quickly. It's full of one-liner realities that you never think of, but they make a whole lot of sense. Some of my favorites: "Smart women know that a woman's most powerful sense is her sense of self;" or "Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want;" and "Smart women have the sense to appreciate a man who has no interesting problems."
I am buying this book for all of my single (and should-be-single) girlfriends for their birthdays... Whether they want it or not! It's a must-read for women who are in the bad habit of not valuing themselves enough in relationships.
I highly recommend it!! I carry it in my purse!
My daughter is the best judge.......2007-01-24
I selected this book for my 16 year old daughter a few months ago because she has a boyfriend who was doing and saying things that made her uncomfortable. She devoured it and made many notations in the margins. Since then, she has asked me to order the book for two female friends. She became very empowered by the straight forward advise given in the book and seemed relieved to finally be able to solidify her priorites. We are a family that models healthy relationships, but sometimes teens need various forms of healthy support in order to make values clear(church, teachers, mentors). This book was one of those sources for my daughter.
A Reference Book for Women!.......2006-09-30
I found this book to be very honest and helpful. It's written in a conversational tone that's like talking to a respected friend. I feel that it is a MUST READ for women of all ages, whether single or in a relationship. You may not agree with everything in the book, but there's a wealth of news you can use. I also highly recommend other books by this author!

Reality Check!.......2007-06-25
This is an awesome book which delves into the insights of what men truly feel and think about regarding a number of varied aspects of life. Without losing it's human touch this book reveals some very interesting survey results that I would never have guessed before. Including the importance of your man having and being shown respect by you as his partner. Coming from a women's perspective, I always considered love one of the most important elements in a relationship. I discovered this is not necessarily true for men. Survey says...Respect is what tops their list. Neither of these elements are better or worse than the other, just different as they reflect how men and women are different.
Another awesome book on relating is called "How to Create a Magical Relationship" written by Ariel and Shya Kane. The Kanes present new possibilities in how to relate to your partner that can create and sustain magical relationships. Disharmony is replaced by ease, fun and satisfaction. Both of these books are insightful and potent in presenting new ways of having the best relationship with your partner and others in your life.
Every Woman should read this!.......2007-06-22
Every woman should read this book! The book will help you understand men! It was so insightful to what's going on in men's brains. Not only did it help me with in my relationship with my husband but with understanding my father, brothers, coworkers, etc. The book is a fun and quick read.
The book is so well written, its easy to go back and reference key points. I will read this book once a year to keep the information fresh in my mind. The book will help you verbalize your needs to your mate. Buy both and ask your partner to read the companion, my husband thanked me after he read it!
Better then the book but don't have to be religious!.......2006-11-15
This is best used in a group setting. Individually it may recommend a few books to you but thats it. And It should encourage guys into some of the talks in a structured way if they are willing to do so accepting the position(s) among more ladies (Not all of whom they maybe all that close too.) However, The too books I think positivly could help your man(men) see the positives of speaking about these things/topics and encourage the discussion and learning eventually. Which I haven't yet found a book that does that. And that IS INVALUABLE. EVEN THOUGH THEIR ARE MORE SECRETS I'M SURE THAT WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THEM THAT THIS BOOK AND WORKBOOK DON'T HINT MUCH AT ALL AT. WHICH IS SAD. MEN ARE OFTEN HARDER TO READ SO SOMETHING LIKE THIS BOOK IS MOSTLY NEEDED BADLY WITH THEIR HELP OFF COURSE.!
really a companion!.......2006-11-09
Too often "discussion guides" are a trimmed version of the original. Not so here. It helps by adding extra tidbits to the info already presented; if used in a group setting it helps the leader ask questions or present viewpoints that have not already been read by the rest of the group. There are even questions you can ask your partner to promote understanding (and how to get out of a rut) for each lesson. I'm so glad I ordered both books!
WOW!!!.......2006-04-28
I have been married for over 14 years and I just discovered this book. It has been life changing! I really understand my husband so much better now. He has opened up to me more because of this book. I would highly recommend this book to couples and even to singles. It will definitely improve how you relate to men. I just wish I had read a book like this early on in my marriage....I think I would have avoided a lot of heartache for both my husband and I.
