Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-09-04

It is an insightful book with a lot of good information for starting a youth ministry.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente Libro!!!.......2007-03-12

4 out of 5 stars practical in every way.......2007-01-22

this book is extremely practical and will be a resource for the youth worker far beyond the first two years. Doug lays out in great form things that starry-eyed leaders don't typically see. With great insight, Doug seeks to help more leaders to actually stay in the game for the long term --- a minor regret/challenge I would have of the book is to challenge the amount of moving youth leaders tend to do from one church to the next --- although principles are great, a long tenure within the same church framework has amazing results in the lives of students, adults, and the church as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars A companion to revisit again and again..........2006-08-26

The beast of youth ministry is burnout, which is sadly a reality for so many youth leaders who start out strong, work tirelessly for the church, and fade into exhaustion-- and unfortunately, sometimes resentment. Youth ministry is difficult, and people who are just beginning their journey need advice from experience, advice that warns of those in the church who may hurt your feelings, advice that provides guidance in the planning of programs and curriculum... Advice that reminds you, "You will inevitably mess up; but you are human and you are learning. Don't give up!" This book is very insightful, and encourages people to take the long-term perspective, that youth ministry is about the marathon, not the short-distance race.

Reading this book really is like sitting down with a mentor who knows the doubts and fears you possess- and those you have not yet embraced- and prepares you for reality, for better or worse. My suggestion: read it before you enter a YM position, and read it again six months into your position, and again 12 months into the position. The wisdom will be new every time you read it as you gain more experience, and you will value the reminder in times of confusion and concern, that Christ is with you always.

5 out of 5 stars read this one before others.......2006-08-12

This was incredible help when I started as a youth ministry leader!

I'd recommend buying "Purpose Driven Youth Ministry" with this book. However read THIS book first. Read it BEFORE you enter ministry.

I LOVE how this isn't a how-to book, but really has more focus on Christ. :) In fact, the principles will help you with any ministry, and being a Christ follower in general.

It was very easy to read for me.

Book Description

Bestselling author Darryl Brock returns to post Civil War America with Two in the Field, a novel that brings back his beloved protagonist Samuel Clemens Fowler.

Recently returned from a trip through history, where he was a part-time "ballist" with the Cincinnati Red Stockings-baseball's first all-professional team-Sam is trying to readjust to life in the 21st century. But part of him is still back in 1869 Ohio, where he fell in love with a beautiful Irish widow named Cait. Determined to find her again, he sets out on a cross-country journey. Lightning really does strike twice when his car flips over in the middle of a raging storm outside Keokuk, Iowa. Sam awakens in 1875, where he is once again caught up in the tempestuous events of the era. Soon he's riding the rails as a tramp, tracking through Pennsylvania coal mining country, and heading west in a frenzy of gold rush fever before he can reclaim his lost love.

Peopled by such unforgettable historical figures as Samuel Clemens and George Armstrong Custer, and filled with vivid period detail, Two in the Field takes readers back to the years when America was young-a must-read for fiction lovers and nostalgia buffs alike.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A sequel that delivers.......2007-04-21

After reading "If I never get back," I immediately ordered "Two in the Field." While some disparage this sequel because of the comparative lack of baseball scenes, I found that a plus. I'm not a big baseball fan, and could do without extended descriptions of ball games, as occurred in "If I never get back." I found "Two in the Field" to be exciting, a real adventure story with enough plot twists to keep me glued to the page. I appreciate Brock's attention to detail, and this made the characters seem real and believable. This is the best book sequel that I've ever read. I do agree, however, that to fully enjoy this book, you need to first read "If I never get back." I would love to read a continuation of Sam Fowler's adventures in the past. He's quite a likable character.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting historical fiction.......2005-09-26

The author made you feel as if you were there, back in that period of history. Great adventure with a good ending, and the hero getting the girl. I loved it.

2 out of 5 stars sappy.......2004-05-15

When I read the first book, 'If I never get back' I was thoroughly captivated. Very interesting work. Not sure what ten years does to a man, but boy oh boy is this one sorry bunch of sappy crap. It's books like this that create 'nice guys' who actually believe this overly-romantic fantasy world. The time-travel is actually the most believeable part. While the first book was a creative novel with A LITTLE romance, this book is filled with cheezy lines and overly do-goody stuff - like the idea that a former-slave who Sam Fowler (the main character) meets would IMMEDIATELY trust a white man. Brock plays this book like it's a baseball novel to suck in men who get ultimately duped into believing it has a good plot line only to find out it's really one precarious step from a trashy dime-store novel. Brock's first book is wonderful, but his work here took a decidedly 'Kevin Smith'-Jersey girl turn, representing a man who had a lot going for him until this enormous bump in the road. I would not purchase this book - check it out from your library if you have already read the other 100 (or maybe, 1000) books on your 'must read' list. Interesting history stuff but can't overcome the sappy phrases throughout.

3 out of 5 stars swing and a miss?.......2003-07-14

When I first read "If I Never Get Back", I was completely enthralled with it. I reread it many years later, and still enjoyed it. I looked forward to "Two In the Field", and zipped thru it, but in the end found myself thinking, "Is that it?". It was enjoyable, and I liked meeting historical characters like Twain and Custer, but overall found the book a little disappointing. Two of my favorite topics are time travel and baseball, which is why I liked the first one so much. I have to wonder why this one is titled as it is, since baseball is such a miniscule part of the plot. And I agree with those who say it ended abruptly.

3 out of 5 stars not jack finney.......2003-07-03

This novel is a straight-up copy of the style of jack finney, (which might not be so bad, as we will not see any more books from finney,) right down to the disgruntled male protagontist, who is just a little too stubborn to leave behind his old-fashioned values as it seems the rest of society has done. This novel, however, is short on intellect by comparison. First of all, there is no attempt to explain time travel in any diverting way. the character is merely put there by the author in a dream-like state. You can pick out the author's "research" work too easily as the plot progresses (he obviously visited the mark twain house museum in hartford...,) and you do not get the feel like he is revealing anything about the past that truly may have been impressed on a time traveller. the scene where twain thinks up a scene for one of his books and it just happens to be his most well-known scene is pathetic. but jack finney, too, wasn't always so cerebrally rewarding, so this book gets some credit for being a good fantastical diversion, which is the main appeal of the time travel genre. but, if you prefer the best, read finney's "forgotten news."

    Book Description

Spin-orbit coupling makes the spin degree of freedom respond to its orbital environment. In solids this yields such intriguing phenomena as a spin splitting of electron states in inversion-asymmetric systems even at zero magnetic field and a Zeeman splitting that is significantly enhanced in magnitude over that for free electrons. This book describes spin-orbit coupling effects in quasi-two-dimensional electron and hole systems. The first part provides a general introduction to the electronic structure of quasi-two-dimensional systems with a particular focus on group-theoretical methods. The main part of the monograph is devoted to spin-orbit coupling phenomena at zero and nonzero magnetic fields. Throughout the book, the main focus is on a thorough discussion of the physical ideas and a detailed interpretation of the results. Accurate numerical calculations are complemented by simple and transparent analytical models that capture the important physics.

Although I did not see the television documentary on these two little darlings, I nevertheless loved the book. Although they are now big bears, the story of little Klondike and Snow's early years is interesting, educational and touching. Abandoned by their mother as cubs, the two bears were raised by humans. This book clearly illustrates the love and devotion of the Denver Zoo towards the cubs' care and development. Klondike and Snow are now thriving at Sea World's Wild Arctic exhibit, were they have plenty of living space and attention!

This book is wonderful for any animal lover and people interested in animal/human interaction.

Anyone who was fascinated by the PBS program on these two polar bears will enjoy this book. It tells the story of their early years before being transfered to the Florida zoo. The photos are amazing! I've used this book as a resource with K-6th graders, and all ages have loved it. The text under the photos is very small and in blue, making it difficult to read, but the main text is fine, and otherwise the book is wonderful. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in these two very special bears.

    Book Description

For centuries biologists have tried to understand the underpinnings of avian migration: where birds go and why, why some migrate and some do not, how they adapt to a changing environment, and how migratory systems evolve. Twenty-five years ago the answers to many of these questions were addressed by a collection of migration experts in Keast and Morton's classic work Migrant Birds in the Neotropics. In 1992, Hagan and Johnston published a follow-up book, Ecology and Conservation of Neotropical Migrant Landbirds.

In Birds of Two Worlds Russell Greenberg and Peter Marra bring together the world's experts on avian migration to discuss its ecology and evolution. The contributors move the discussion of migration to a global stage, looking at all avian migration systems and delving deeper into the evolutionary foundations of migratory behavior. Readers interested in the biology, behavior, ecology, and evolution of birds have waited a decade to see a worthy successor to the earlier classics. Birds of Two Worlds will complete the trilogy and become indispensable for ornithologists, evolutionary biologists, serious birders, and public and academic libraries.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Accurate.......2005-10-13

This is a book for serious birders of the highest order. It's clearly written with ornithologists and animal scientists as the primary audience, but there is a wealth of information in it. If you keep a library, this book will be in it. If your a weekender, it's probably too detailed. If you want to really understand why migration evolved and how it works and what it is all about, then work through this book, which collects the experts in one spot and provides the answers. Pricey, but you get a lot of book.

      Book Description

To the world, battlefields represent sites of international conflict, places where the course of history is decided. On a national level, battlefields are places of pride and community identity, where the sacrifice and the courage of those who fought take on mythic status. Battlefield archaeology is a crucial tool for understanding how battles are fought and won, often revealing shocking conclusions at odds with the documentary record. Nothing shows the effects of strategies and tactics better than the evidence in the ground-physical evidence shows whether battle plans succeeded or failed and the effectiveness of planning versus luck. The editors of Fields of Conflict explore the ways in which battlefield archaeology clarifies our understanding of military tactics and strategy as they have evolved over the last 2000 years. In two volumes, they not only reveal new interpretations of classic battles, but show clearly how archaeology can be used regardless of geographic or temporal location, making this an ideal book for general reader and professional archaeologist or soldier alike. First showing the reader how to identify a battlefield from earthworks and particular artifacts, the authors then foster a new understanding of warfare by examining some of the best preserved battlefields in the world. From the ancient world, through the Middle Ages to World Wars I and II and the Korean war, the analysis of what gets left behind at the close of epic struggles shows all too painfully how men fought and died, and how decisions made by commanders shaped history even today. Yet more than history, battlefield archaeology can be deeply meaningful to relatives of soldiers today, who seek to know where their missing loved ones fought, died, and were possibly buried. While military archaeology has always been popular, this set is the first attempt to create a cohesive chronological interpretation for future study and understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Same as all Two of a Kind books, but better!.......2001-11-24

I'm 15 years old, yet I'm still reading 'Two of a Kind'. My mom has been begging me to start reading other stuff, but I still insist on reading either this of The New Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley. Why? Cause I am a really big fan of Mary-Kate and Ashley. I own every New Adventures, Adventures, Two of a Kind and Starring In books. I am not kidding.

The storyline is basically the same in every book, but this one had a little of an unexpected twist in it. It is absolutely one of the better books I read in this series. I enjoyed it so much that I plan on buying this book for my friends this Christmas! This one rocks, there's no other way to put it.

          5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2001-10-18

Two of a kind books are the best books I've ever read. I've been hooked on these books since I read calling all Boys. Two for the raod was awesome! I cannot tell the whole story but, I can tell you part. Ashley is the team captain for triathlon sports and Mary Kate lost her diary. You will love this book so check it out and read it.
