5 out of 5 stars What a Ride.......2007-08-16

This book was great!!! If you have some down time on the beach or a long plane ride in your future, this is the book. Just pure, page turning entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-04

I enjoyed this book. I put myself in the place of each lottery winner. The deadly sin of "greed" was definitely behind each and every story. I wonder how much this happens in real life. Once you are blessed to receive millions of dollars, are you greedy for more, or are you thankful and try to use it wisely and pay it foward? Great Book Carl and I am on a path to read all of your books. I bought 7 during the Christmas holidays and I have 4 more to read!

5 out of 5 stars Love the stories.......2006-07-11

Both Carl Weber and LA Jill Hunt wrote stories in this book. I love thed stories in the book and they all made me laugh or think. I love both of those writes so I enjoyed this book.

3 out of 5 stars The Root of Evil..........2005-08-22

Many people often misquote this particular bible verse," the love of money is the root of evil" by saying instead that money is the root of all evil. In "A Dollar", the authors allow the readers a peek into the chaos that greed and love of money create using three different short stories with diverse scenarios.

I thought the first short-story "Easy Street" was farfetched. Nevertheless, I did finish it but I have read better. In this story, Katrice is trying to hold on to the apartment house left to her by her father. However, she has a "do-wrong" man who loses money gambling on a regular basis. Fortunately, one of the residents, Paul, hits the lotto. But will he be willing to help out Katrice? More importantly, neither Paul nor Katrice expected the other residents to decide that Paul doesn't deserve the money. And one last twist, did Paul actually win the lotto or is he scamming?

In the second story, the main character in "Ghetto Fabulous" is just taking it one day at a time. She is real and tells her story with brutal honesty. She makes you sympathetic to how life just sometimes "happens". When she hits the lotto, the folks come out of the woodwork. Funny how your friends increase when you have money. And suddenly no one cares that yesterday you were a single mother trying to survive in the ghetto.

Finally, in "One Night, Six Dreams", again the storyline pushed the limit on realism. One person was designated to purchase the tickets for the $180 million jackpot. However, when their numbers fall, the celebration is a little premature because brother man decides to take the money all for him self. So begins a tale of how greed can make people do things they would never have dreamt: like murder.

Altogether "A Dollar and a Dream" was a quick, enjoyable read. The title is a good analogy for the mantra of the main characters.

3 out of 5 stars 2 out of 3 aint bad.......2005-07-02

This wasnt too bad. There are three stories here, the first written by Mr. weber himself, and the other two written by two other authors. I will have to say that, carl's story was good, and the last story was great, except for the crackhead testimonials. It had action, suspense, murder, all the entertaining stuff. The middle story was the shortest and also the least entertaining. It was so boring and cliche. Anyway, two out of three stories is not bad at all.

5 out of 5 stars Better than "Masquerade".......2007-01-12

I also bought this book as a gift for my cousin and his son. I had bought it for myself previously, too. I don't feel this story plagiarizes "Masquerade". The treasure-hunt idea is the same, but other than that, it has nothing in common with "Masquerade." I like it better because in "A Treasure's Trove" the story is more enjoyable, with a good guy/bady guy story, and it's easier to understand.

3 out of 5 stars Staying power?.......2005-11-09

Michael Stadther, A Treasure's Trove (Treasure's Trove Inc., 2004)

With most of the actual treasure now found, Stadther's preface is going to get more important as time goes on; the book will have to be judged as a story rather than as a treasure hunting guide. Which leads one, of course, to the question of how the story is.

It's not a bad little story, as these things go. Good guy has to fight bad guy because bad guy is doing terrible things to the forest and its inhabitants. Sounds like a lot of fantasy stuff, right? Well, that's both the good point and the bad point; it's familiar because you've read it before, though usually in much greater detail. Probably a good jumping-off point to get kids who aren't old enough for Narnia or the Lord of the Rings reading fantasy, but it's possible they'll be put off by the rather saccharine tone of the whole thing. ** ½

2 out of 5 stars Plagarized Kit Williams' Masquerade.......2005-08-12

This is a rip-off of the British artist Kit William's book "Masquerade" that came out in the 1980's, and caused a massive treasure hunt all over England. The difference is Masquerade had beautiful detailed artwork on every page. This book does not.

I don't know WHAT that first reviewer is talking about! I think they're out of their mind (or are just pissed because they are too ignorant to figure out the puzzles in the book) It's an awesome book, really good story, intriguing. I love fairies so I love this book. It's even more fun to know there is a real treasure behind it!

5 out of 5 stars Treasures Tweleve? No! There are 13!.......2005-02-14

This charming fairy tale is more than a childrens book, it's a puzzle with multiple levels, suitable for all ages. The author, Michael Stadther, told us to look "around the nation tweleve places to seek" and that there were "treasures tweleve for you to keep!" ... his funky spelling has even led to a huge online forum of the same name... but there aren't 12 treasures, there are 13!

The solution to the newly released clue tells us that there is one more treasure for all of you to find. Very exciting.

4 out of 5 stars A Treasure's Trove.......2005-01-31

SUPER FUN!!! Apart from the idea that their are real treasures hidden for someone to find the book has an intriguing mystery about it...The graphics are very colorful and beautiful and the puzzles are engaging I would definatley reccomend it. I couldn't comment for older children my daughter is just one year old and she loves the bright pictures.
fyi the first review is hateful...you could read hate and porn and racisim into just about anything these days if you try hard enough...the book is none of those things!!! Darkness is tipically an evil thing in many fairytales GET OVER IT!!!

Book Description

In this "perceptive and captivating" (New York Times) novel, Tom Drury returns to the quiet Midwest to spend an action-packed October weekend in the lives of a precarious family whose members all want something without knowing how to get it: for Charles, an heirloom shotgun he will do anything to obtain; for his wife, Joan, the imaginative life she once knew; for their young son, Micah, a knowledge of the scope and reliability of his world, gained by prowling the empty town at night; and for Joan's daughter, Lyris, a stable footing from which to begin to grow up. Sometimes together, sometimes independently, father, mother, son, and daughter move through a series of vivid encounters that demonstrate how even the most provisional family can endure in its own particular way.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Qualified Thoughts.......2001-06-19

I should not have read this book without having read the predecessor, or should I? The jacket says this novel is set in The American Midwest as his previous novel was. That comment alone in no manner suggests to me this is a sequel. I tried to divine whether it was by checking on, "The End Of Vandalism", and it's still not clear. My comments are based on this work as a stand-alone story.

Mr. Drury writes very sharp, and at times very clever prose. Some of the dialogue is as witty as you will come across. He also provides enough characters for a 500 page novel much less the 200 pages we are offered here. If this were indeed an installment in a series I would have thought more highly of it, and enjoyed it more. He creates a dysfunctional setting full of dysfunctional characters of varying degree and it makes for a good read. And that is where it ends.

Unless of course this is a series and the stories of his characters are going to continue. For this is one of those books that do not culminate in any form of resolution, rather it feels as though someone tore out the last several chapters of the book.

I like finding new Authors and enjoying their work. I have a real problem with expensive short books that are closer to a large fragment than a book, and may or may not be part of a greater whole because the jacket and the interpretation of it by others is at best vague, at worst wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Writing, Terrific Book.......2000-08-25

Tom Drury has given us another terrific novel. This one takes place in the life of a family of four, over four days. Each of them is hunting for something, sometimes physical, sometimes metaphysical, sometimes both. Charles, the husband is initially seeking a gun that belonged to his step-father, but he is also seeking his youth, before he screwed up his life. His wife, Joan, is searching for answers about her life, about whether she belongs in her marriage, with her family. Their young son, Micah is really just searching for some sense in this world he is growing up in. His half-sister Lyris, who has returned to the family after living in a foster home is also trying to make sense of the quasi-suburban world in which this family lives. This story is marvelously told with Drury's wonderful deadpan humor. Much of the ridiculousness of our lives now is observed, without comment from either the characters or Drury, yet somehow we see that things can be weird in the US right now. Weird in a hilarious way. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Great writing, bland story.......2000-08-09

Searching for stability and an overall sense of purpose in life is the underlying theme to Tom Drury's latest novel. Set in a mundane, midwestern town over the course of an October weekend, the characters seek out personal comfort in their dreary lives.

In an attempt to connect back with his long-lost childhood and stepfather, Charles Darling goes to any length to retrieve a sentimental shotgun. His wife Joan retreats to a weekend, animal-shelter seminar while trying to find happiness in her otherwise lack-luster marriage. Her orphaned daughter returns home trying to gain a solid stepping stone into adulthood. And their young son Micah inquizzitively explores what reality his little world holds.

Although wonderfully written, I didn't really connect to the characters or much care about their plight. It just seemed like, young or old, everyone hit a mid-life crisis at the same time. There are no great issues tackled here, just the overall blandness that life con sometimes produce and how one family dealt with it.

5 out of 5 stars A fine book.......2000-08-04

Really, an excellent example of why books will not die. This book has it all -- the kind of book that becomes part of your life -- you keep thinking about the characters after you've read it, to the point you're wondering about your sanity, what with having to remind yourself you don't really know these people, since they are, ahem, actually fictional.

Read this one and I will also pass on to you a word about another slim and eminently readable novel about contemporary America: "Love Songs of the Tone-Deaf" by Asher Brauner. A wonderful slice of American life.

5 out of 5 stars A Novel That Makes Us See.......2000-07-27

Tom Drury's Hunts in Dreams is a distinguished novel. It reflects loneliness and loss in American life. Over one October weekend a multitude of characters in the Midwest hunts for a life they have never had or may have lost. This is no longer the heroic terrain of Faulkner and Cooper but one that is tragicomic where Drury catches the hopes that haunt us still. We emerge with a changed vision for we have encountered the uncharted land of an authentic voice.

In the PBS TV show Money Hunt, would-be entrepreneurs present their business plans to a panel of experts on business launches. Those with good plans get start-up capital. Those without them get nothing, other than maybe a painful lesson or two. Now, the hosts of Money Hunt want you to know the 27 rules of starting a successful new business, rules they've gleaned both from doing the show and from their personal experience--Spencer is an investment banker and venture capitalist, and Ennico is a corporate lawyer and entrepreneur. Between the two of them, they've spent 30 years working with businesses from the ground floor up.

A few of their 27 rules are well known. Take Rule No. 9, for example: "During a gold rush, sell shovels." But Money Hunt gives a surprising example: the company that makes wheels for inline skates. The inline-skate business grew 100 percent a year for five years, but when that business peaked and all the people who were going to start skating already owned skates, who was still profiting? The guy who made the wheels to replace the ones that got worn out. One that's not so well known is Rule No. 25: "It's a business, not a baby." Here, Spencer and Ennico tell the tale of a college kid who started a business designing Web sites in his dorm room, and quickly sold out to a local advertising agency. The kid sensed that the head of the agency was new to the Net, and, if he did any exploring, could easily find someone who did what the kid could do. He knew this was his best shot at big money, and took it. Other rules explore how to deal with people, money, markets, and lawyers, and each is illustrated by a detailed story of real-world business, making Money Hunt the best treasure map an entrepreneur could lay his or her hands on. --Lou Schuler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Never-Ending Quest.......2000-02-28

MoneyHunt

According to the subtitle, the authors provide "27 New Rules for Creating and Growing a Breakaway Business." How "new" these rules are is subject to honest disagreement but all are sound and can be of great value to anyone who is either preparing to launch a new company or who has launched one which is now experiencing serious problems. Either way, I rate this book highly. It is well-written. The material is anchored in a wealth of real-world experience. For each reader, some rules are probably more relevant than are others...at least today. However, having had extensive recent experience with several start-ups, I can attest that each of the 27 will become relevant at one time or another. I also think this book can be of substantial value to senior-level executives of so-called "mature" companies. Why? Because every company needs what I call a semi-annual or quarterly (if not monthly) "gut check" -- or "reality check" -- which challenges all basic assumptions and premises concerning its vision, mission, priorities, allocation of resources, positioning, core competencies, customer relationships, competition, etc.

The authors devote a separate chapter to each of the "Rules", with the 27 chapters organized within seven Parts:

Part One: Do You Have What It Takes?

Part Two: The Right Idea at the Right Time

Part Three: Markets and Competition

Part Four: People

Part Five: Show Me the Money!

Part Six: The Legal Side of Business

Part Seven: Getting Out -- and Moving On

The book concludes with five Appendices: The MoneyHunt Story, Business Plan Template, Online Audition for MoneyHunt, Legal Dos and Don'ts of Raising Capital, and Demystifying the Business Organization. Although all of the material provided is solid and well-presented, I was especially interested in Appendix A which explains the origin and development of a television program on which entrepreneurs (hunting for money, of course) appear.

Who will derive the greatest benefit from this book? As previously suggested, those who are merely thinking about launching a new company; also those who are preparing to launch a new company; also those who have launched a company now encountering serious problems; also those in a well-established company which may be losing its competitive edge. Here's another category of reader which I also want to include: Those involved in a large organization who must compete aggressively each day for a share of that organization's resources. For them, effective application of the 27 "Rules" will of course require strategies and tactics which are substantially different from those required when "creating and growing" a new enterprise.

The hunt for money never ends because the need for money never ends. Unless you have everything required to achieve your specific objectives, read and then re-read the book. If and when circumstances tempt you to think that you can relax a bit, read it again.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Best Book!.......1999-11-29

I went to Crown looking for The New New Thing but bought this book instead. After reading the first rule, I knew I have to buy it but couldn't wait to order from Amazon. Rushed to my car and finished the whole book. The rule on ruthless validates a few plans I had in mind....I never watched the show but extremely grateful that the two gentlemen wrote this book. I know I can never find a great business book like this written in any other language, not in this century.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......1999-11-18

In the process of building my company, I came across this amazing book. Like a map on the business highway, it showed me which roads to travel down, and which to steer clear of. I recommend this book to anyone who has, or is thinking about starting a business.

This is the book ALL entreprenuers need. If you're starting your own business, get your hands on this detailed and helpful book! Cliff and Miles know their stuff, and let you understand what and what NOT to do when starting a business. A truly great book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, someone tells it like it is!.......1999-10-05

In the typical Moneyhunt "pull no punches" style, the is a candid look at mistakes made in small businesses...and how to avoid them. I especially liked the chapter "During a Gold Rush, Sell Shovels." Wish I'd read this when I started by biz...I'd be a lot richer AND have more hair!

      5 out of 5 stars A revelation.......2005-05-12

I met Trevor in 1996 at a poetry conference in New Hampshire, & knew nothing about him; I was intrigued by his reading there & he kindly gave me copies of _stone floods_ & _The Poems of Sweeny Peregrine_. The first looks superficially like a set of spare, relatively "conventional" lyrics; the second like a translation of the medieval Irish book of Sweeney. (Both impressions aren't exactly wrong but I've gradually realized that there's far more going on in those books....) What really excited me was Trevor's subsequent development, in poems like _Syzygy_, _Hopeful Monsters_, _Without Asylum_ & _Trem Neul_--a poetry as carefully worked-out & full of buried interconnections as the work of his namesake (& distant relative) James Joyce, but with a terse precision closer to Beckett or to the Chinese poetry he's studied for years.

If you want my full review of this (much longer than can be posted at Amazon) you can find it at http://www.soundeye.org/trevorjoyce/chicagoreview.pdf. In any case, this is for me one of the most important collected-poems volumes of the past decade.
