A Night of Questions is a unique four-in-one Haggadah that includes outlines for customizing a Seder for the people present at the table. The four menus include a Seder for young children, a Seder for older children with adults, a Seder for groups of diverse backgrounds (including those who are not Jewish), and a Seder focusing on the role of women.

The Haggadah also features special color-coded graphic icons that highlight the different types of readings such as kavanot, which are introductions to the text that set the tone for the text, and readings for children. Readings and songs are drawn from a wide variety of sources, representing the diversity of the Jewish community and the world in which we live. Accompanying the text is compelling new artwork by Jeffrey Schrier, which itself serves as a commentary on the Haggadah liturgy.

If you are looking for a liberal hagaddah, it has tremendous breadth and depth.

I have somewhere between 20 and 30 different Haggadot. A Night of Questions is not only one of the richest and most thought-provoking in my collection... it is also the most user-friendly. It's the only one that has a table of contents that breaks down the Maggid section into its familiar parts (4 Children, Dayenu, etc.) The outlines of 4 different types of seders in the back of the book are very helpful. There's something here for every one. The commentaries address the hard questions that are likely to arise in the minds of those who are really thinking about what we are saying, such as: "Would it really have been 'enough for us' had we come out of Egypt and not been given the Torah and not come into the Land of Israel?" IMPORTANT NOTE: I see that Amazon is showing this as 4-6 weeks delivery. I know that they are available from the publisher and you'll have them in time for Passover. Check out www.jrf.org."

I have conducted sedorim (seders) for over 30 years and have used five different haggadot. This is the BEST! It explains, offers excellent commentary, provides choices in the kind of seder one might have, as well as providing frameworks for designing your own. I have used it for 2 years now and get rave reviews from the people who attend my sedorim.

The cd of the music of Pesach which is available, is a favorite as we prepare our home for the holiday.

It sure beats "Manishewitz".

Seders too often fall into a routine, with everyone slogging through the Hagaddah by rote. This is a lively, thought-provoking Hagaddah that will broaden and deepen your appreciation of Passover. It certainly has for my family.

    OVERALL:
    This book is really wonderful in so many ways. The writing is honest, beautiful, and intricate, yet not ostentatious or pretentious. The story is very well thought out and the manner in which it unfolds is perfect. It is just so well-crafted (!) - throughout the story there are certain landmarks which as the story progresses begin to take on new meaning and importance.

    CHARACTERS:
    The characters are believable and three-dimensional, they are human with strengths and weaknesses, hopes and desires and faults. Jack Harrington is very real and a wonderful narrator; the reader is able to trust him and like him, despite the fact that we are privy to his more negative or darker thoughts. Kate, his sister, seems like an elusive mystery, though her explanation is unraveled at the end. Rose, Jack's ex-mother-in-law, is a wonderfully humorous character whom you just wish was real so that you could actually sit down and have a conversation with her.

    TITLE:
    At the end of the book, if one reexamines the title it takes on more meanings than originally thought, which I really must commend Ms. Hart on; it is really thoughtful, yet extremely subtle.

    BASICALLY:
    Definitely recommend it - a wonderful book that is worth buying, not just getting from the library.

    Well, as a matter of fact, I bought this book for my wife but I decided to read it anyway and I found it quite interesting. Not my favourite genre but surely a nice book and well worth the price.

    5 out of 5 stars Draws one in to Ms. Hart's writing........2005-12-15

    I bought 'the Reconstructionist' as a bargain book. But what an excellent read. I can see it as a film. Though it would be quite a challenge to portray the relationship between the siblings. Ms. Hart obviously has a deep insight into a mind damaged by trauma. The need to protect ourselves or those dear to us, with whom we share such a situation.
    I felt she was excellent. 'Damage' is more concise reading, the characters are better described, but Ms. Hart still manages to maintain a distance from them. One wonders what will become of the main characters.
    What I thought was fascinating is that She writes with the mind of a man..made me wonder whether it was a man who had actually written the text.

    This book is a trip! You really have to pay attention while you read the book because they give clues all the way through it. There is a twist at the end that is totally unexpected. I had to re-read the last few chapters to make sure I read it right.

    The story is told from Jack Trainor's point of view. Jack is a psychiatrist, and has a younger sister Kate. Kate is a writer, but she seems extremely unstable. The focus of the story is Jack's differing relationships with women. By the end of the story, there is a resolution in both Kate's relationships with men through the resolution of Jack's relationship with women. All this resolution comes because Jack faces the truth of the horrible event that framed their youth.

    I would highly recommend this book. The librarian who checked it out to me told me it was strange, but I disagree. It takes a little bit to get used to, but the story grabs you as you get further in. Happy reading!

    As with her seductively dark debut novel, Damage (made into a film starring Juliette Binoche and Jeremy Irons), author Josephine Hart once again explores the paths of human desire and self-deception.

    A successful London psychiatrist, Jack Harrington, devotes his hours and thoughts to the problems of his patients. Divorced from a wife with whom he had spent time "in the social purgatory that rowing couples inflict upon one another," he seems to lead a well ordered mannerly existence sometimes marked by overly protective feelings for his sister, Kate.

    Jack's tranquility is interrupted when his former wife suffers a heart attack, the family estate in Ireland is put up for sale, and the soon-to-be-married Kate develops an eerie edginess.

    When Jack and Kate return to the family home, he is forced to confront long buried truths concerning a long ago tragedy and the scars left upon those who witnessed it.

    With masterly detail and perceptive psychological insights Josephine Hart has penned a mesmerizing contemporary Gothic tale centering on familial relationships, both beneficial and pernicious.

    The book is very much an introduction, but not as good as those "blank for dummies books." It reads as if you entered the front door, then a second later, turn around and are back in the hall way. The chapters are short and simple. The actual philosophical and theological concepts are reduced to sentences. If anyone were to read this book believing it's the movement's intellectual history, they would be disappointed.

    Perhaps the greatest contribution towards reconstruction's theory is Judaism as a Civilization by Kaplan, a good primary source that shows the movement through the founder's eyes.

    I would recommend it for someone who wants a quick introduction without the difficulty of theological perspectives.

    4 out of 5 stars Guide to Reconstructionist Belief and Practice.......2003-02-04

    The Reconstructionist movement is both the newest and the smallest of the modern American Jewish movements, but its influence has been tremendous. Mordecai Kaplan, its founder, conceived of Judaism as an evolving religious civilization (more than simply a religion) and of God as a process or transcendant power (not a supernatural being). These ideas led him to a conception of Judaism that respects and honors the past while transforming it to provide a modern expression of traditional Jewish values. Although Kaplan ended up founding a new movement, he spent most of his life (until his retirement at age 82) teaching and writing at the Conservative movement's Jewish Theological Seminary, and it is apparent from Neil Gillman's book "Conservative Judaism: The New Century" and from the Conservative Statement of Principles "Emet ve-Emunah" (which expressly allows for Kaplan's conception of God) that Kaplan had a huge impact on the intellectual leaders of the Conservative movement. Reform's recent trend toward more traditional practice is surely also at least partly a recognition that Kaplan was right to emphasize continuity with the past even while acknowledging the necessity of modernization.

    In "Exploring Judaism," Rabbis Alpert and Staub provide a brief introduction to Reconstructionist belief and practice. The emphasis in the first six chapters is on the fundamental beliefs that define the movement -- the conception of Judaism as an evolving religious civilization, the nature of God, the role of traditional practice and halakha, the interaction of practicing Jews with an open society, and the place of Zionism. The ideas in these chapters are set out clearly and concisely and give the reader a good idea of what Reconstructionism is about. These chapters are not meant to be theology or a rigorous exposition of Reconstructionist ideas; still, a little more detail on some of the more obvious difficulties (an asserted "solution" to the problem of theogony, which is not a solution at all) and tensions within the movement (did Kaplan go too far or not far enough in changing the liturgy, the language of prayer, the conception of "chosenness") would have been helpful. As it stands, this part of the book seems to be pitched toward bright high school students or adults who have never thought about theological issues except in the most basic, "self help" terms.

    The second half of "Exploring Judaism" is devoted to Reconstructionist practice -- study, prayer, ritual, social action, the development of inclusive communities, and the "structure" of the movement itself. These chapters do an excellent job of demonstrating how Judaism can be reconstructed into a vital center of one's life and community. Here the authors succeed in being inspirational without being preachy.

    "Exploring Judaism" seems to have been written for people who were raised in another Jewish movement and who have either dropped out or become disenchanted. A reasonable degree of familiarity with traditional Jewish practice and belief is assumed throughout. If you are lacking that familiarity, you may be somewhat lost, particularly in the later chapters. Recommended to anyone seeking to learn more about this path to reconnecting with Judaism.

    Alpert and Staub's book is great place for a spiritual seeker looking for basic information on Reconstructionist Judaism or for a committed Reconstructionist Jew. I found that this book has been very helpful in resolving a lot of my own personal beliefs about Judaism and feel that it can do a lot for other searching Jews. The truth, beauty, and intellectual integrity of Reconstructionism are amply demonstrated by this book. The book also provides a long list of resources for further study, all of which I highly recommend.

    I just finished the book, Exploring Judaism: A Reconstructionist Approach. I can't believe that I finished it in just two evenings - it's so unlike me. I found it incredibly informative and empowering, especially coming from an oft-times exclusive traditional background. This book is written in an intellectual but accessible manner. It truly elaborates on the Reconstructionist point of entry into Judaism. It also encourages further study! I didn't realize that one could find so much beauty in my heritage - especially since I broke away several years ago feeling spiritually empty and intellectually disenfranchized. I highly recommend this book for anyone, but especially those who are deeply struggling to recapture and explore their Jewish soul. Thanks Rabbis Alpert and Staub!!!!

    This may have been a good introduction to the differences between movements at one time, but it's now outdated and misleading. For example, it was written before the Conservative movement had female rabbis and counted women in the minyan.

    The Introduction, by Mel Scult, Rabbi Kaplan's biographer, lays out the historical background and development of Kaplan's formulation of God. He does so in a clear and authoritative manner, so that when you have read it you know Kaplan, and understand how he has influence the Jewish thinkers of his time, and continues to influence the course of Jewish thought across denominational lines. Witness, the recent historic changes in the Reform and Conservative Movements. It is only to be hoped that the Reconstructionist Movement, which Kaplan founded, will not fixate itself at the place where Kaplan left it 60 years ago, but will continue to further evolve as a vibrant movement, as Kaplan himself would have wish, had he lived to continue his evolutionary thought.

    The book bears from the road experience matured by the author and is essential and well built. It reports, separated on chapters, formulas and tables that you can utilize for reconstruction of many kinds of roads accidents. The formulas are explained with explicit sketches, in many cases, and they are suitable for both the metric systems. This book furnishes the basis for a first approach (often definitive for lack of more precise data) to the roads accidents reconstruction. It should always be present on the desks of traffic and road accidents investigators' and reconstructionists'.

    Scult makes the effort to see Kaplan as a major force in restructuring and enhancing Jewish 'civilization' as a whole. While Kaplan was without doubt a major Jewish twentieth century figure the results of his efforts are not particularly encouraging. The Jewish people it seems need God far more than they need Kaplan's 'God idea'. The Jewish people once they follow Kaplan's prescription and make of their religious life a ' tradition' only, lose a dimension of meaning not easily gained elsewhere.. Is it surprising then that what we have today in the Jewish world is so so much assimilation on the one hand, and a growth in a more narrow kind of Haredi Judaism?
    Kaplan was a prolific, and in certain ways heroic figure.But his ideas and his whole view - of - the -world did not bring about true Jewish renewal. And the long- term beneficial results of his effort seem to be minor indeed.
