Book Description

"The following description is for the second edition of About Face. The 3rd Edtion, About Face 3 (ISBN 0470084111), is now available."

First published seven years ago-just before the World Wide Web exploded into dominance in the software world-About Face rapidly became a bestseller. While the ideas and principles in the original book remain as relevant as ever, the examples in About Face 2.0 are updated to reflect the evolution of the Web.

Interaction Design professionals are constantly seeking to ensure that software and software-enabled products are developed with the end-user's goals in mind, that is, to make them more powerful and enjoyable for people who use them. About Face 2.0 ensures that these objectives are met with the utmost ease and efficiency.

Alan Cooper (Palo Alto, CA) has spent a decade making high-tech products easier to use and less expensive to build-a practice known as "Interaction Design." Cooper is now the leader in this growing field. Mr. Cooper is also the author of two bestselling books that are widely considered indispensable texts. About Face: The Essentials of User Interface Design, intro-duced the first comprehensive set of practical design principles. The Inmates Are Running the Asylum explains how talented people and companies continually create aggravating high-tech products that fail to meet customer expectations.

Robert Reimann has spent the past 15 years pushing the boundaries of digital products as a designer, writer, lecturer, and consultant. He has led dozens of interaction design projects in domains including e-commerce, portals, desktop productivity, authoring environments, medical and scientific instrumentation, wireless, and handheld devices for startups and Fortune 500 clients alike. Joining Cooper in 1996, Reimann led the development and refinement of many goal-directed design methods described in About Face 2.0. He has lectured on these methods at major universities and to international industry audiences. He is a member of the advisory board of the UC Berkeley Institute of Design.

This book not only defines a "layman user" but also answers the question of how your application can educate a layman user step by step.

5 out of 5 stars Designing of application.......2006-11-10

How to design a application from a designers perspective. Cannot say I agree with everything, but the writers are probably right.

1 out of 5 stars Needs more examples!.......2006-05-16

I think this guy has a book about how the inmates are running the asylum...well this book suffers from what happens when the subject matter experts (SME) are allowed to write books. BORING!!! SME's always seem to forget to include compelling examples. Yes there are little screen shots, but IMO in order for a book to be compelling that has to do with design...it needs to show LOTS of examples of good design. The bulk of the book should be about breaking down those designs. I need to hear why a specific design is effective. Take a hint from Steve Krugs book "Don't Make me Think". That book is extremely effective without inundating the reader with jargon. Lots of examples with meaningful visual breakdowns. Afterall...isnt UI design a VISUAL communication form?

3 out of 5 stars Not for experienced developers.......2006-03-05

I have 7 years experience and I wasn't able to get any value out of this book. Based on some of the reviews on this site I thought that the book would be worth buying but unless you are in school or right out of school then your $35 is better spent elsewhere.

I suggest that you put your $35 towards "The Usability Engineering Lifecycle" by Deborah J. Mayhew. Don't let the $64.95 price tag scare you away. This book is worth $100.

4 out of 5 stars Good on concepts, weaker on examples.......2006-02-21

This follow up to About Face is a good overview of the critical concepts to improve software usability. Cooper and Reiman know their stuff. Reading this certainly provides you with the grounding you need to make good decisions. At a tactical level, the book could certainly do more to help with real-world examples.
For that, you may want to take a look instead at Jenifer Tidwell's Designing Interfaces : Patterns for Effective Interaction Design. Where About Face is strong on theory, Designing Interfaces is all about practical ideas, demonstrated through graphical examples.
If UI is an important part of your world, buy them both.

5 out of 5 stars Nearly a complete course in the "Cooper Method".......2007-10-08

I read (and still have) the previous two editions of this book. Unlike the usual "complete revised and updated" hype for new editions, this one has had some serious re-work and expansion.

The whole structure of the book is new and very close to being a complete course/textbook in the Cooper approach to Goal-based Design. All the sections have been expanded based upon reactions to the previous version(s) as well as their collective experience. The most obvious changes are towards describing in greater detail the process and how to integrate it into the large design/development cycle.

For those who have not read (about) Cooper (and his firm's) work, this book is the complete approach in detail. It is written for professional UI designer and developers and makes some assumptions about the background of the reader.

Executives, stakeholders or those needing a more general overview should pick up his other book "The Inmates are Running the Asylum" which was written for that audience. That book includes more business cases and rationale without the heavy details.

As a UI professional for over 20 years find his approach to be the most useful in creating truly useful and usable applications. This book continues to point out how get beyond mere incremental design enhancements to truly revolutionary and winning designs.

1 out of 5 stars Trite and tedious.......2007-09-14

At every chapter in this book I thought, "Well this book's been worthless so far, but I think it gets better in the next chapter." I thought that until the last (26th) chapter, which was actually half-decent. I've never been so disappointed in a book. Any designer with the slightest bit of experience will learn nothing from this book. Nearly every piece of advice is trite ("Design principle: Use noneditable controls for output-only text"). There's very little depth or thinking beyond the completely obvious. You will learn more from any other book (on any topic) than from this book. If you've already bought it, you should skip to the chapters with non-zero value. I recommend chapter 5 (personas), chapter 16 (undo), chapter 17 (save), and chapter 26 (misc). The section on perpetual intermediates is good too.

I finished the book 10 minutes ago after a very tedious three months. I can finally put it on the shelf and never look at it again.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......2007-09-11

If you only get one book on interaction design, this is the one.

I picked up the second edition when I was just starting out as an interaction designer; it was a great primer and filled in a lot of the missing pieces for me. Now that I've been at it a while, it's still the book I go to whenever I have a question. I found the book reads well cover to cover, and also serves well as a handbook. The info you need on a topic is usually well contained in a section.

Not only does this book cover the general principles and theory behind interaction design, but also provides lots of real-world practical information. The writers call on designers not simply to follow rigid interaction design rules, but to create elegant, informative and respectful interfaces. That's a loftier goal, and this book give you the tools to attain it. The updated edition also spans new technologies and paradigms that have emerged, and covers them thoroughly.

Cooper has an unrivaled depth of experience to draw on, creating a truly comprehensive book.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to developing fresh, useful computer interfaces.......2007-08-05

This third edition is my first exposure to "About Face", though I certainly wish I had encountered it earlier! New computer interfaces tend to be rehashes of previous computer interfaces, and sometimes the old wasn't very well designed. Why copy it?

Even if you don't change anything you're doing with interface design after reading this book, you will surely be more conscious of the decisions you are making, and why. A must-read for anyone building software used by real people.

5 out of 5 stars Software Designers - Please Read this Book!.......2007-06-24

With more and more applications moving toward the web and websites becoming exceedingly more complex than ever intended for their original design, Alan's new version of this book is well-timed. Now how do we get both web and software designers to read it?

Alan, Robert, and David walk you through the complete process of orienting your product to your customers' goals. They provides you with the tools to build a product that will delight, rather than baffle, your customers.

In this day and age of great application frameworks, it is fast and easy to get a web-based application up and running. But please don't do it, at least not until you have read this book!

I'm buying copies as early Christmas presents for all my software designer friends in hopes that I will see the end result as when I try to use some of these products.

Book Description

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is the most common endocrine cause of infertility and serious weight gain in young women. It affects millions—experts estimate about 6 to 10 percent of reproductive age women struggle with this devastating metabolic imbalance. Look around schools and malls in this country and you see the impact of this burgeoning epidemic: obese young women are everywhere. The numbers are staggering. The health risks are overwhelming—from increased risk of teenaged diabetes to young mothers with heart attacks or strokes, and early onset of breast and uterine cancers.

Early treatment is key to preventing serious health risks, but most sufferers don't even know they have PCOS.Nor do doctors take it as seriously, often minimizing symptoms like excess body hair, weight gain, acne or thinning scalp hair, thinking they are just cosmetic" problems of overanxious young women. Gynecologists focus on helping women get pregnant rather than treating acne or weight gain. Endocrinologists typically consider ovarian problems the "turf " of gynecologists. Mood swings in PCOS can be severe, but psychiatrists typically don't check hormones, so they don't identify PCOS either. What's a woman to do?

It's not enough for doctors to tell women with PCOS to just "eat less and exercise more." Women need a practical guide to help them understand the disorder, know what tests to ask for, what the tests mean, what treatments are available, and how to take a stepwise approach to healthy hormone balance, sound meal plans, exercise, and stress management. This book provides the practical, user-friendly guide that women desperately need to be successful in getting help for this devastating disorder.

This is the best book I have read on the subject!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of knowlege from someone who knows.......2007-05-23

This book has a lot of knowledge from a doctor who seems to know her stuff. It is helpful for me because I am getting ready to find a doctor and I will better be able to explain my situation. The book is a little bit of a difficult read, but I read it in short spurts and it is fine. Overall, it is a good book for anyone who has PCOS or who thinks that they might have PCOS but doesn't have a diagnosis. It can help someone go to their doctor and know how to tell them about their symptoms and what kind of tests to ask for.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough........2007-03-03

This book is an incredibly thorough guide to PCOS, albeit from a very allopathic perspective. Vliet is clearly an expert in the realm of hormonal reproductive disorders. However, I wish it contained more info regarding pregnancy and breastfeeding and on alernative and holistic treatments. It also is the type of book that could stand to have an index.

5 out of 5 stars The Savvy Woman's Guide to PCOS.......2007-02-12

This is a very good book with a lot of information. I did buy it for my teenage daughter who has just been diagnosed with PCOS and it's a little complicated for her to understand, so I am reading it first and giving her the most important information.

5 out of 5 stars Tons of great info.......2007-02-07

This book really holds a wealth of information about a complicated disease. There's no cure for pcos but following the advice in this book might make it a little easier to live with. This is not one of those "all natural, herbal cure" promoting books, although that topic is covered. This book is based on sound medical advice and an understanding of how all the hormones interact.

An excellent book for anyone who wants to understand why so much software is so poorly designed -- and an even better book for anyone who wants to DO something about the problem. Must reading (and doing!) for programmers of any level.

Book Description

The cleverest code in the world is worth nothing if a program's interface proves an unwieldy barrier to users. That's why programmers and designers alike will benefit from About Face: The Essentials of User Interface Design. Here, respected software designer Alan Cooper shares his own real-world experience and design principles so that you, too, can fashion intuitive, effective user interfaces. Applicable to multimedia and Web sites as well as application software, About Face is an invaluable resource for design professionals.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Still a landmark, but we've moved on since then.......2003-11-06

I've long been curious about this book because it is so often cited and hailed by current usability experts as the "starting point of software usability." And maybe it was a groundbreaking work in 1995, when hardcore coders and "power users" still made up the majority of the user base. But now, many of Cooper's claims and proposals seem awkward or downright unusuable... the antithesis of what usability now stands for.

To be fair, this is an old book (in the IT sense of the word), and a new "About Face 2.0" is apparently hitting the shelves soon. Thank goodness! A lot of the ideas presented in the original are timeless and important, but others have hopefully been relegated to the dumpster.

Goal-directed design, for example, is something that interface designers should never lose sight of. Cooper does an excellent job of digging up the real goals of users (as distinct from their job descriptions) and maintaining focus on how to satisfy those goals while balancing them with other realistic business concerns-profit, professionalism, efficiency, and so forth. He decries the "real world analogy" trap that so many developers fall into and stresses the limits of "metaphors" in promoting user understanding. He stresses the importance of visual feedback for all actions and the need to protect users from "modes."

This is all good material that developers and project teams should always keep handy for the inevitable design arguments. (Although note that the tone of this book is relentlessly programmer-focused, hailing from a time when all "design" was done by coders, and interface or usability specialists simply didn't have a place in IT.)

But when Cooper gets into suggestions for "breaking the mold" and coming up with new and different types of interfaces, he loses me. He seems to vastly overestimate the readiness of users to learn new interface features and new designs. More recent comments from other usability sources acknowledge this basic truth. Joel Spolsky, for example, states that "An interface is well designed when it works exactly the way the user expects it would." Steve Krug states it even more baldly as "Don't make me think!" Don't make me think about the PROGRAM, that is; users are very willing to think about their tasks, they just refuse to waste time learning your cool new interface for what is (to them) just a complicated and badly-designed tool.

Cooper makes sweeping suggestions, such as doing away with file structures and directories entirely, or increasing the reliance on "chord clicking" and triple-clicking for key functions (for power users only, of course). He wants more icons and less text because of space considerations, even though he acknowledges that icons are inherently confusing to new users (idioms-something that can be learned only through experience) and are often poorly executed.

He also introduces several new concepts to the platform, such as a "milestones" feature in word processing. These new notions may perform valuable functions, but at what cost? Their suggested implmentation is awkward and confusing; the terms themselves are hard for non-coders to understand. Do we really want all dialog boxes to have an additional button: "OK, Cancel, Abandon"? It seems that, in his enthusiasm for trying something new and different, he temporarily forgets his own caveat: "No matter how cool your interface, less would be better."

I'm glad that a new version of this book has been developed; hopefully it has retained the core principles and jettisoned the specific examples, particularly the "totally new and different!" ideas. For better or worse, we have a standard for software interfaces now; changes must be approached with caution and delicacy, no matter how much of an improvement they seem to offer. Today's user base won't waste time learning a new interface and doesn't care how "cool" or even valuable it is. Don't forget the focus on user goals-and their goal will never be "learning to use this great new software."

4 out of 5 stars Modern Interface Design.......2003-08-16

This book is by no doubt a valuable resource for any software developer, nevertheless, more liveliness, humor or variety would have made it less monotonous. Prepare yourself to spend a great deal of time to tackle through more than half a thousand pages of very dense text, which is worth reading. The previous book by Alan Cooper, "The Inmates are Running the Asylum" is much more vivid, concise and amusing. I would recommend reading "The Inmates" first to get acquainted with Goal-Directed Design and the concept of considerate software, and then proceed to "About Face 2.0" to expand the knowledge and make it actionable.

This book exposes the distinction between implementation model and mental model, and brings the concept of "perpetual intermediates" as the most common category of the users. The authors show how to classify applications by posture on the web and on desktop and handheld computers, as well as on mobile phones and public kiosks.

The aspects of the modern User Interface are well covered in this book: data entry and retrieval, direct manipulation and pointing devices, metaphors, idioms and affordances. Parts of the book are devoted to such interface constituencies as controls, menus, toolbars and tooltips.

You will also find chapters about installation process and dialog etiquette in this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Quest for User Interface Design Expertise Begins Here.......2003-01-31

Cooper was bold enough to say "the program must inform the User when it (the software) gets stupid"...[and not the other way around]. Cooper exposes User Bashing error messages such as "invalid entry" and bogus warnings like "save changes before closing."

Cooper blows the lid on a dirth of best practices in the doldrums of corporate america (like a good Dilbert episode, only it's for real) : the ways software products (and their creators) make Users feel stupid, and in doing so how typical Micrsoft products fail to win friends and influence people (although they do sell boatloads of product). He picks on Microsoft and developers in general, not beause thery're evil, but because their "hurried to market" products cover thier own shortcomings and idiosyncrasies by blaming the User for their inability to perform.

While your waiting for this book to ship, just repeat the mantra "don't make Users feel stupid". This book pioneered the solution as a User Centered Design process, and the follow-on "Inmates Are Running the Asylum" is like a prequel establishing the need for this design methodology.

3 out of 5 stars So so..........2003-01-02

First part has good touchs, second one is outdate!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the programmer-cum-designer.......2002-11-23

Although the responsibility for user interface design should be delegated to experts, unfortunately as a programmer I have found myself on the "front line" doing user interface design. About Face is an excellent discussion of interface design issues for programmers. Cooper introduces a vocabulary for interface design that is beyond the specifics of precise button and label placement, etc.

For that reason, About Face is useful for any WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus and Pointers) GUI system. The book's examples have a heavy Microsoft Windows and Office bias, however these are based on Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, so the Windows Forms designer should also be concentrating on the broader lessons of user interface design. You may even be able to successfully reinterpret these for designing Web forms.

5 out of 5 stars unique.......2007-03-14

This book genuinely teaches you how to approach things differently, to understand why, and to enjoy yourself while doing it. I take my hat off to the authors, who after all are men. They could have kept this to themselves, and therefore held onto the power; but they didn't. Thankyou.

3 out of 5 stars Its got nothing to do with either sex.......2007-02-23

OK I've read both kinds of books. The ones that say women are crazy and the ones that say men of jerks. This is of the latter. It tells women that basically what ever goes wrong in the relationship, it isn't your fault. It catergorizes men into certian types. I guess for some women they must connect with this. Being a guy it just irritated me and gave women more fuel for their fires. Likewise I would believe that many women are not pleased with the male books that point out the shortcomings of women. The solutiions to life will not be found in the pages of this book or any others. The problem is much deeper than that. Women and men are totally different, with different needs and different expectations. We need to recognize that. I am afraid that feminism has done nothing tohelp this fact. In the "good old days" women and men had predefined roles and we didn't have the same problems. Now you have 2 very different sexes vieing for equality. Equality on every level will never work because we are so different.

5 out of 5 stars I admit it, I'm with Dennis Leary........2007-02-20

Before I read this book I thought I was pretty cool. Now I realize I'm just a big jerk. My life has no meaning anymore, I think I'm just going to end it. Thanks Joe!

3 out of 5 stars Classic Oversimplification.......2007-01-12

I always love hearing suggestions like the ones in this book. The assumption coming in is that the reader bought the book because they have tried everything but the other person is still a "jerk". Unfortunately, it ignores the fact that a relationship is a two way street. There are certainly a number of cases where one person is completely (or mostly) in the wrong. However, is it not much more likely that both sides are not working together, and that both sides are indeed to blame? A husband may be a jerk, or a wife, and both sides would simply blame the other. It seems rather biased to assume that just because things aren't going well in a relationship that the man must be wrong, and the perfect woman must now employ these techniques in order for him to see the folly of his ways. It is classic revisionism that when the man is a jerk its his fault...however, when the women angers the man she is simply reacting to his awful behavior. Wake up people! Its not the womens fault when the mans acting terribly, but women its not the mans fault if you're acting horribly as well. Take responsibility for yourself and learn how to examine things from the other persons shows. That, rather then passive aggressiveness or blatant manipulation, is the real path to a stronger relationship and a more caring bond.

5 out of 5 stars Stop trying to please that angry jerk! (and get out ASAP!).......2006-11-16

This book really saved my life when I was in a relationship with an angry, critical man and couldnt leave until I could afford to. It really helps you to stop trying to please them too. You cant make them happy or make them stop criticizing you. It's impossible. The best thing this book taught me is to stop arguing with them and instead - agree with them. You have to read it to understand how this works but it is so FUN and it gets them off your back!! It made my life so much more peaceful and tolerable. It is a very interesting twist on human behaivor and the effect of one person changing drastically and in turn the other person has no choice but to do the same. Helps you to take back your power, self-esteem and peace of mind. Dont let your "jerk" ever see it though! Make sure it is well hidden!

3 out of 5 stars Mom is a wanna be social climber ....... daughter is abused but lives through the drug induced metnal state she was in for years.......2006-05-27

I thought the booki was interesting in that it was so much like a soap opera.
It was a book I got at Goodwill so I found it a good read.

1 out of 5 stars Truly terrible.......2004-01-26

Thi is my first book by Ms. Michaels'and I am fairly sure it will be my last. I think the whole abuse them is so graphically and tastelessly done that it can hardly be considered entertaining, and any author who makes money from this sort of sensationalist rubbish should donate her time and money to rape and child abuse crisis centers.

In terms of the writing, it is terrible, completely disjointed. and supposedly trying to portray her disjointed memories. But since she is supposed to have amnesia what does she really remember. And every time she asks she gets all lies anyway. It starts looking more and more like the author does not even know what information to give us to tie the whole thing together, and there are some real inconsistencies and irrelevant information about people and places that make this whole thing read like a disorganized mess in need of a really good edit.

Even leaving aside the problems with the narrative structure, we don't care about the characters enough to weed it all out. The heroine Casey is so wooden and nearly always unconscious because constantly fainting, so that she is hardly of any interest and her boyfriend the wonderful doctor is too sterotyped and too good to be true.

Just as the mother and step brother and fiance are all too terrible to be true, and the motives of the villains are just unbelieveable. As is the fact that Casey forgives them all in the end and they live happily ever after!! Even the good doc can't believe when Casy forgives them at the end. This is absolute drivel of the worst sort, not romance, not a thriller. Don't waste your time.

1 out of 5 stars TOO drawn out........2003-10-18

The plot takes place on an island, and it feels like everyone on the island has a few chapters devoted to him or her. I think that the plot is drawn out so much that it makes the reading frustrating. She seems to give a large part of the story to characters that are inconsequential to the plot. Although, the plot is a bit dark (childhood trauma) you are hooked right away. But the interest may fade with all of the added stories. I found myself skimming pages looking for the real plot to pickup again. If you have a lot of time and patience this is the book for you. For those of us that have little patience and much less time, it is an exasperating read and I do not recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best, but Michael fans will like it........2003-06-30

The story grabs your attention right away, which is good. I don't think anything by Fern Michaels is bad - many others have been better, however.

The main character, Casey, is a young woman released from a mental institution after 10 years who cannot remember what happened to send her there. She goes back to her home town to find out. With the help of the local doctor, Blake, who becomes her love interest as well, they start unraveling the horrible story of what took place in her young life. There are a lot of twists and turns here as well as shady characters to keep the reader interested. The novel could have been absolutely captivating if it had been written just a little differently. The light-hearted bantering (dialogue) between 2 main characters took away from the seriousness of the situation. It didn't seem appropriate at times it was inserted in the story line.

It is a disturbing story, how she was repeatedly raped as a child by a stepbrother, neglected by her mother, and the dark images that haunt her but that she can't identify. She has been drugged heavily for the past 10 years in the institution, and she is afraid to take any medication, but agrees to regression therapy as a last resort to try to remember what supposedly drove her mad.

It's hard not to care about Michael's characters. The "Mommy, Dearest" of the main character was a little hard to believe, yet was lots of fun to hate. It's also a fast read and keeps you turning those pages, perfect for a day at the beach or at the airport.

One thing that did surprise me about this Fern Michaels is that in the beginning of the book Casey has a daydream of home and family, complete with dog (Fern Michaels' novels aren't complete without a dog) but in the end one isn't mentioned. A golden retriever sitting next to the bassinet of the newborn would have been more like the Michaels we know and love!

2 out of 5 stars TOTALLY DISSAPPOINTING.......2003-05-26

I was really dissappointed with the plot of the story. Yes, I know it's just a story, but where a mother wants to make her child insane/killed doesn't wash well with me. Most of all the knowledge that her child was being molested and had done nothing about it made my skin crawl. I basically didn't like the whole story. The only reason why I gave it two stars was because of the writing.

5 out of 5 stars AuthorZone.Com Book Review.......2003-08-01

Excellent book. Well written, easily read, thought provoking. Is long, but not cumbersome.

I first read 'About Face' written by Col. David Hackworth during the late 1980s. I found it extremely valuable in helping me...a woman with little knowledge of anything military, understand better my children's dad, a land based Viet Nam combat vet and the problems he had to deal with before his death.

As the wife of yet a second Viet Nam combat vet, special forces, I suggest this book for anyone who wants a better understanding of the debt of gratitude and respect we citizens owe those willing to serve in The United States Military.

I first came to hear of ABOUT FACE from a friend and fellow NCO in Korea. He said I might think it was good, Was that an understatement. I read About Face in one fourteen hour plane ride back to Korea. I've read it three more times so far and recommend it to all my friends deserving the title Non-Commisioned Officer. I truly believe that all military leaders should read this and take from it; Hack's wisdom and experiance dealing with the military, Integrity and soldiering.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Man, A Great Book, A Great Read.......1997-08-07

I bought this book when I was about 11 years old and a big fan of "war stories". I am now approaching twenty and have read this book at least once a year since first purchasing it, to the extent that it is now in three parts and the photographs have fallen out. This book is an intense, gripping, readable but most of all honest and believable account of one of America's greatest warriors and his experiences...from the forested slopes of Trieste in 1946 to being chased around Washington DC by Army Intell goons in 1971, this book, while entertaining, will also teach you everything you need to know about duty, honour, bravery and honest patriotism, qualities that come hard to find in the era of Iran-Contra, Tailhook, Whitewater and the like... This book will make you laugh, cry and think. Please, read it.

4 out of 5 stars A grunts-eye-view look at the career of Col. Hackworth........1997-07-25

This is the tale of America's most decorated living hero. From his humble beginnings to his glorious career in the U. S. Army. A man destined to be one of the elite movers and shakers in the military. He became disillusioned with America's war effort in Vietnam and the "ticket-punching" pursuits of the manager-officers. He gave up his career and moved into self-imposed exile. This story is a must read for those interested in the development of the U. S. Army since WWII. It's a real wake-up call

Yes, there are different classes of facial folds, lines and wrinkles, and each is treated differently. 4 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2006-08-10

This book provides a frank, and eye opening discussion of popular cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. Definitely worth the effort to read if only "thinking" about undergoing a facial make over.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!.......2006-04-20

This book really summarizes and clarifies the process of undergoing facial plastic surgery in very plain terms. It is an excellent resource for my patients who are looking into facial cosmetic procedures. It not only describes what the procedures are, but explains why certian patients are better canidates for particular procedures, as well as what types of physicians should be doing them. I have purchased numerous copies of this book for my office, and reccommend it on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST if you are considering surgery!!!.......2006-04-17

Whether you want to find out what facial treatments work in your 30's, or are 60 and considering a total facelift, this is the read you need. Dr. Jacono breaks it down to a level that is truly easy and fun to understand. I have been considering getting my upper eyelids done, but it seems that I would get my desired result from an endoscopic browlift. Reading this book has certainly been an "eye-opening" experience. I will definitely recommend it to anyone interested in improving their appearance whether from injectibles (Botox, Restylane) or surgery. I just love the "pearls of wisdom" sections throughout the book. Great read!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-04-06

I was thinking about having plastic surgery, but I could not figure out what procedure would help me look younger. This book really helped. It made sense.

Now I understand my options, what I want to do and how to find the right person to do it.

Thanks Dr. Jacono

Book Description

Spirit Faces is a visionary book about the afterlife based on Mark Macy's fifteen years of research, with special emphasis on a growing collection of unique photographs in which he captures clear faces of nonphysical beings—spirits. These photographs and other results of his research provide some of the first solid evidence, and verifiable proof, that life continues after death of the physical body.

Macy weaves his groundbreaking information into a clear picture of life on the other side. He explains in easily digestible terms how loved ones, ancestors, angels, and ghosts all play a part in the affairs of our world, and how we humans can attract the supportive and loving spiritual influences that we desire.

2 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?.......2007-09-10

I was anxious to receive this book....but thoroughly disappointed. I didn't even finish the book. Perhaps it gets better on the last few pages?!

5 out of 5 stars Spirit Faces: Truth About the Afterlife.......2007-07-19

Mark Macy has been doing research in instrumental transcommunication (ITC) for fifteen years. Over this course of time, he has been in communication with many departed souls. Some of these spirits simply want to leave loving messages for those left behind while others are interested in Macy's work and want to contribute.

Although Macy does give the reader some background and insight into his ITC research and findings, much of Spirit Faces focuses on another related project. Using a machine called a luminator and a regular Polaroid camera, the author has been taking pictures of individuals (live ones) at his lectures. The interesting thing is that when these pictures develop, the picture is often foggy, like a double exposure. Macy's research with these pictures suggests that the double exposure is actually a spirit individual superimposed upon the live individual.

Quite intriguing, I am now interested in finding out more about ITC, about the laminator, and about spirit images.

2 out of 5 stars nothing new.......2007-06-25

In my opinion Spirit Faces is a rather boring and redundant book. The author does not offer a convincing explanation for the faces phenomenon, and the 80 images by itself are non impressive and boring. There is a huge amount of aditional information non directly connected with the main issue -like a very naive and old fashioned description of what is life after death or the messages Macy received a decade ago from spirits by telephone or radio--, which made a bigger volume but didn't add value.
I would not recommend the reading of this book.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling vision of 'the other side' and experiences there........2006-12-12

SPIRIT FACES: TRUTH ABOUT THE AFTERLIFE pairs over 50 color photos of spirits with the author's fifteen years of research into the life after this. He's worked with instrumental transcommunication, including receiving messages through TV, radio, telephone and computer - and here through photography. His evidence, paired with that of other researchers in the field, offers a compelling vision of 'the other side' and experiences there.

5 out of 5 stars I'm the author.......2006-10-21

My new book, "Spirit Faces; Truth About the Afterlife," is really moving along, and I want to thank those of you who've read it. My hope is that it'll stir a spiritual revolution--quelling doubts, offering age-old truths, and providing some new insights about our spiritual heritage that until recently were buried in the sands of time.
Much of the information in the book is mind-boggling, but I vow on my life, on the lives of my family members, and on my afterlife prospects, that the material I write in this book is true, to the very best of my knowledge . . . and my knowledge is rather substantial as a result of my fifteen-plus years of nearly full-time research, working with some of the most prolific world-to-world communicators in history.

Have I really talked on the phone to departed colleagues? Yes, I have. Have colleagues of mine in Europe really received clear images and long texts from spirit friends who planted those image and text files directly onto the hard drive of my colleagues' computers? Yes. This is not just speculation; I know this all to be true and legitimate. Again, I will stake my life on that.

If you're influenced by the skeptics, please ask yourself if they would likewise stake their lives and the lives of their families on their skeptical position. Are they that sure of themselves? Ask them, and please let me know their reply.

I have a reputation of honesty and sincerity, and I wish to keep it that way. One of my greatest dreams is that hundreds of millions of people will gain a truthful, in-depth knowledge of spiritual reality from my work. I would like people who read "Spirit Faces" to come away with a clearer understanding of their spiritual nature than 99.9 percent of the people who've ever lived on Earth. That's my hope, my dream. If even half the people in the world can adopt a realistic spiritual understanding into their personal worldview and let the other pieces of their worldview resettle around that stable spiritual foundation, then peace and compatibility will spread quickly among social systems ranging in size from families and communities, to nations, religions, and cultures. For the first time in the history of our world, humanity would be able to resonate with brilliant beings in the light, ethereal realms of existence (angels, celestial beings), and the Earth would glow in spiritual Light.

That is my hope, my dream.

One of the best books on the life of a true american warrior.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books period.......2007-02-16

This is one of those books I keep reading, time and again. The writing style is engrossing and addictive and you will find yourself drawn into his life, clearly drawn along a detailed backdrop of the cold war.

I first picked this book up as a young US soldier serving in Germany and it opened my eyes up to a lot of the good and bad in the Army. I completely recommend it to any soldier of any rank to read and learn from Hack's mistakes and glories. I later read it again as a college student studying history and again (and again and again) as a teacher.

In my opinion, this is the best of his books and it goes beyond "just" a war memoire. The pain, hurt, love, betrayal and so many other feelings come out in the book and the passion is what makes it addictive. The attention to detail and the "big picture" is clear as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Shock of Spin Free Honesty .......2006-11-15

Thankfully Hackworth left us with this story of his life, primarily in the US Military. We struggle to accept the dichotomy of his courage and effectiveness, presented without spin. It is the absence of spin that makes us most uncomfortable in that we still cling to the belief that the process of killing in war can be made civilized. Hack of course compounds this with his nocturnal adventures. Others are offended by his willingness to offend so much of what senior military officers hold dear.

We are fortunate to have these mavericks in the military - Hackworth, Boyd, Moore and so many others who compromised their careers to do the right thing for their services and their country. They are not the only answer but a much needed voice in a democracy.

5 out of 5 stars If you read only one book this year make it, About Face........2006-05-07

I read About Face several years ago now. It is a long read and you will find yourself emursed in the life of this man we come to know as Hack. I emailed this man several times and he always responded back. He has sinced died and America has lost a son. This book is the best read ever if you have a patriotic bone in you don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars As a soldier, Hack is my hero.......2005-12-11

Hack told it like it is. We had a batallion commander like him a couple of years ago. If you read the Book "Heavy Metal" Then you would know who it is. In this book hack always had the soldiers by his side. Something officers in todays army dont have. He always knew how to work the system for the benefit of his men. Something today few officers or nco's are willing to do. As a soldier this is my leadership handbook. If civilians want to know how the army works today read this book. Eventhough this book is based on the 50', 60' and 70's I still find officers and nco's today doing what they did 30 to 40 years ago. Once you read this book your outlook on the Army will change. RIP Hack!
