5 out of 5 stars A Pirate's Life for Me.......2007-10-11

As the lead animal trainer on all three of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, I found Michael Singer's account of our shared experience accurate, artistic, and exciting. So often, the perspective disseminated via the publicity machine shows an idealized view of the film making process. "Bring Me That Horizon" beautifully illuminates our journey - warts and all. I am especially appreciative of the special chapter on "Critical Critters"(pages 88 & 89). For a veteran of the "Pirates" wars, this book is like a photo album - slash - scrapbook I will cherish forever.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for POTC fans!!!.......2007-08-04

This book is very informative and so colorful! The pictures are incredible and it's very entertaining to read the actors' comments on their characters and the trilogy. I'm very glad that I invested the money! Any POTC fan who loves to read about the back stories behind the characters and the storyline will LOVE this!!! I highly recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes mith Jerry Bruckheimer from Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-07-15

For every Pirates movie fan a must have. The Characters talking about things that happened during filming. You get to know them better by reading this, things that you never have read before in any other interview in magazines or on sites. Also very nice phatography by Jerry Bruckheimer. Pictures only published in this book. Whene you are reading this you get great respect for all those people who are working behind the scenes. Then you realise how huge the work is to build a set. You find very much information about how the movie comes to that what we see on the whitescreen. Enormous what a work is done to deliver these three movies for us to see. You read who created the final line "bring me that horizon" of the first movie.

5 out of 5 stars Bring Me That Horizon: the Making of Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-07-13

This is a great book and well worth the cost. The history of the making of all three movies is very interesting and the pictures are great. I highly recommend this book for any fan of the Pirates trilogy.

What a great book! The inside scoop on everything POTC -- from interviews with the cast to special effects, costumes, makeup and film locations. A must for any POTC fan!

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-09-17

I'm one of the artists featured in the book. I have to say this is one book that I'm proud to have my name attached. Too often "Art of" books smack of kissing up to the producers and above the line folks. This is an "art of" book that doesn't lie. It's just a bunch of art. Period. Thanks to Jon Rogers at Disney for putting this together.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of the Pirates of the Caribbean.......2007-09-16

Ever wanted to see how they came they came up with the characters, settings, and more for the hit blockbuster trilogy Pirates of the Caribbean? Then you definitely should check this one out. The book is huge and bound in a beautiful leather cover. The pictures and illustrations are no less than amazing and are definitely worth the $$$ you're going to spend. So, if you are a Pirates of the Caribbean fan or just love artwork get this now!

4 out of 5 stars This is Quality.......2007-09-08

This is worth owning. The prints of the artwork are very large, as compared to other 'art of' books. I would have preferred artist liner notes though.

5 out of 5 stars Art of Pirates of the Caribbean--THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE DONE!.......2007-08-12

I am a big fan of "The Art of..." type books, and they are usually great fun and add to my enjoyment of the movie. "The Art of Pirates of the Caribbean", however, sets a new standard for quality in this type of book. From the faux-leather cover and binding, to the quality of the paper and the standards of the printing and color reproduction, this is the BEST book of its kind I have ever seen. Filled with fantastic art from all three movies, lavishly laid out...two page fold-out spreads; framable quality full page paintings and sketches..this book has it ALL. If you're a fan of the movies; appreciate great Pirate Art; or simply enjoy a lavishly produced movie book--BUY THIS BOOK (or as Capt. Jack would say--"Just go and steal it!")

4 out of 5 stars Sketches and concept art.......2007-07-28

The Art of the Pirates of the Caribbean is a 160-page hardcover priced at a hefty $50. Although the art covers all three movies, it is mostly sketches and concept art without explanatory text or behind the scenes discussion. As such, it's good eye candy, but not much else.

This is a book you can set on the coffee table for friends to flip through. However, as a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I was ready to devour this book and came away somewhat disappointed. The drawings are a mix of black-and-white and color of the characters, ships, scenes, and such. Some of the drawings are storyboards and there are a few fold out pages.

5 out of 5 stars A Pirate lover's eye candy.......2007-08-26

I LOVE Dorling-Kindersly Books! There has never been a publisher that has produced better visual guides to just about everything than DK. So it comes as no surprise that their volume on the third Pirates of the Caribbean film is a joy to look at. You either like the movies--or you don't. BUT, if you like them, the fantastic visual world they created is one of the main draws. This DK volume does the usual wonderful job of putting together a beautifully photographed collection of some of the most striking images from the film. The only problem with the book is, I wish it were longer!

4 out of 5 stars The uncompleted visual guide to Priates of the Caribbean.......2007-08-07

The book is very good, not only the content, but also the print. But it is still not a "complete" visual guide to Piates of the Caribbean, because the world map of the priates on the seven seas is not in the book, that make me very disappoint.

2 out of 5 stars Tired Of Depp and Bloom.......2007-08-06

Another POTC item that focuses on Depp and Bloom (yawn). Geoffrey Rush is a fabulous actor and is not receiving credit he deserves for his excellent performance as Barbossa. Rush is one of the most talented actors who plays many different characters. He is not tied down to one type of character like Depp and Bloom often are. I would only recommend this book to a die-hard Bloom or Depp fan.

5 out of 5 stars Story of Pirates of the Caribbean movies in color.......2007-07-15

I have read all of the give yourself Goosebumps and I find this one to be the most entertaining(even if its not that Frightening it is still a worth while read). In the book you are trapped in a hotel full of ghosts and you must then find your way out alive.
I think R.L. Stine has written a inovative series but sometimes the story and the scares get lost in the mad confusion of the constant choices. That is not the case in this book. So if you like the series or are curious about reading one of them, I highly recomend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly moving.......2002-05-18

this book is the most moving book I have ever read. It tells the story of a young man making his way in life. Born in Donegal, Ireland working his way through Scotland and the USA. It will move you to tears and lead you to book after book from this very talented writer.

5 out of 5 stars Honest and touching.......2001-11-19

This is one of the most memorable books I have ever read. The writer tells the story of growing up in Donegal and his exit to scotland in search of work. You are drawn into his life and the people he loved. There is an honesty in the writing that moves you to tears.

5 out of 5 stars My grandfather is Patrick MacGill.......2000-04-06

This story is truly autobiographical of my grandfather's early life and is very moving and effective. His early years in Donegal were difficult and fraught with the perils of poverty. Nevertheless, Grandpa overcame is lack of formal education and humble beginnings to be a successful author. His later years were no less difficult as he struggled for decades with the debilitation of MS, but he raised, with my grandmother, three amazingly strong and successful women. This autobiographical novel teaches us all abouth the indomitable strength of the human will and spirit.

5 out of 5 stars An undiscovered Classic.......2000-02-28

Having read Children of the Dead End for the first time I was taken over by it.It is a story of extraordinary main characters, humour and the bleak portrayal of life as a near slave, potatoe digger and the harsh life as a navvie. I was amazed at the life that the main character"Dermod" lived. He left home at the age of 12 without an education and he went to the hiring fair and worked to send money back home to his family. He has to face the harsh reality and he gambles his money and becomes a heavy drinker. He experiences life without a roof over his head. This story is said to be Patrick MacGills autobiography. Some of the Characters are fictonal while others are said to be true characters. Mac Gills descriptive power is Compelling and I never wanted to leave the book down. Children of the Dead End is an undiscovered classic of Irish litriture and it should be comended.

5 out of 5 stars One of those unexpected gems for your top ten list.......1999-06-05

Children of the Dead End is mentioned in Roy Foster's History of Ireland. The "lost" Irish who are the subject of this moving tale came from the West (Connaught and Munster) in the first half of this century to dig potatoes in Scotland or build the towns and railways of England. Economic hardship was the perennial impetus to the Irish diaspora and it is this route the young lad steps out as an Irish navvy at twelve via the "slave fairs" in Donegal so that he might send money home for the rent on his parents smallholding. It is rich in its Irish sensitivity towards and facility with language; evocative of the innocence and brutality that so pervades many aspects of the Irish experience; it moves dramatically between eternal hope of youthful dreams and the crushing fate of circumstance. This is not a roughly told tale of the noble savage- or the stage Irishman, fighting and drinking- sentimentalising the epithet about the Irish "For their wars they are happy and their love songs they are sad". No, this is a tale told with pathos, and with a refreshing absence of self-conscious art. It is tragic and heroic, its characters are vividly drawn and engaging. Moleskin Joe is certainly a great addition to the list of literary characters. It has the full force of hard biting reality. I came to it without high expectations but finished wondering whether I had just read the best of Irish literature. It might not be in the same genre as Oscar Wilde for sophistication, nor Yeats for philosophy or Joyce for modernism. But it certainly ranks well beside Synge's Arran Islands and is as enjoyable, engaging and moving as anything I've read. A beautiful book.

Book Description

"Most of society has given up on these girls. Dead End Kids shows us why this is a tragic mistake."-Elizabeth Mehren, national correspondent, Los Angeles Times Dead End Kids exposes both the depravity and the humanity in gang life through the eyes of a teenaged girl named Cara, a member of a Kansas City gang. In this shocking yet compassionate account, Mark Fleisher shows how gang girls' lives are shaped by poverty, family disorganization, and parental neglect.

"A lively, compelling tale of urban misery and dashed hope, Fleisher's work humanizes gang girls and identifies the psychological, cultural, and social forces that condemn the distaff side of America's [gangs] to their dead-end lives."-Donna Gaines, Village Voice Literary Supplement

"Fleisher aptly describes the economic and social pressures that contribute to gang formation, youth violence, teen pregnancy, and other social ills plaguing U.S. cities." -Vanessa Bush, Booklist

"I recommend it to all who want to understand the dynamics of inner-city life and the reasons that current crime and poverty programs cannot succeed. If middle-class America could digest its core ideas, dramatic changes in policy might result." -Jim Quinn, Law and Politics Book Review

"Dead End Kids is an important and exceptional study. Anyone who cares about young people should read it and feel compelled to take action." -Jody Miller, Chicago Tribune

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars funny.......2005-06-30

If you feel the author of this book was irresponsible, then you have something coming. Go to college and understand how important research like this is. Then you will understand why is was important for him to preserve the culture in order to study it. The whole pretense of research, especially an ethnography, is that people trust you so you can study the truth and show your findings to the rest of the world. He found a lot in this research and this wouldn't have happened if he "told" on them.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, yet highly disturbing.......2004-12-04

I write this review merely to respond to allegations that Fleisher is irresponsible. First of all, before you make that claim, enroll in one sociology course. Research like this is vital to understanding how humans operate, and without such research (not just about gangs, but about many aspects of life) policy recommendations would not be accurate, and problems would not be addressed appropriately. Had Fleisher reported all of the crimes that occurred during his time there, his research would have ended. As it is, there is very little research done on girls in gangs. Second, if you had completed the book, you would have seen that Fleisher did have a friend report what he saw with Amy and RoniRo (p 247 -- second full paragraph.) Third, he didn't approve of the gang girls choices to sell drugs -- he said he understood it. Granted that is a choice that most people cannot understand, but after witnessing all that he did, how can you blame him for being disenfranchised?

Clearly, much more research needs to be done on girls in gangs, as this was a study confined to one city. But Fleisher has done a fabulous job explaining the motivations and lifestyles of girls in Kansas City, and purported to do nothing more. Before you so harshly criticize a writer, please make sure that you fully understand what you are discussing.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2004-11-22

The author handled the situations almost perfectly and I applaud him for that. Being a reformed gang member I was suprised that he even got these kid to trust him enough not to think he was the feds. People complain about how he allowed them to smoke and deal drugs but if he had tried to stop them he would have been dead.

1 out of 5 stars Disgusted, too.......2001-11-07

Fleischer desribes the awful conditions that these kids live in and then places the blame on the police, Division of Family Services, the Juvenile Court system, and finally the "entire community of Kansas City." He not only was irresponsible for his failure to hotline these kids, he actually condones their drug dealing. He said he didn't see any other option they had. Give me a break! There are four social service agency willing to help within walking distance of these kids and Fleischer never mentions that.

Overall, a poorly written book by an irresponsible professor.

1 out of 5 stars Disgusted!.......2001-10-01

Fleisher vividly describes the abusive treatment the children of these gansters received from their parents and their ganster friends, the filth they lived in, the lack of food and the overall dangerous living conditions. Did he report this to Family Services? Professor Fleisher is a mandated reporter and conducting research for a best seller should not discount his responsibility to those children in helping to make them safe. I am appalled that a Criminal Justice professor would write with such coldness and lack of concern: "It always took me a week to 10 days before I stopped recalling in my mind's eye the sight of Amy and RoniRo sequestered with Teresa and Kevin." pg. 97 I hope Professor Fleisher sleeps well knowing these children will soon be teenagers and his contribution to their well-being.

Book Description

Teenage Wasteland provides memorable portraits of "rock and roll kids" and shrewd analyses of their interests in heavy metal music and Satanism. A powerful indictment of the often manipulative media coverage of youth crises and so-called alternative programs designed to help "troubled" teens, Teenage Wasteland draws new conclusions and presents solid reasons to admire the resilience of suburbia's dead end kids.

"A powerful book."—Samuel G. Freedman, New York Times Book Review

"[Gaines] sheds light on a poorly understood world and raises compelling questions about what society might do to help this alienated group of young people."—Ann Grimes, Washington Post Book World

"There is no comparable study of teenage suburban culture . . . and very few ethnographic inquiries written with anything like Gaines's native gusto or her luminous eye for detail."—Andrew Ross, Transition

"An outstanding case study. . . . Gaines shows how teens engage in cultural production and how such social agency is affected by economic transformations and institutional interventions."—Richard Lachman, Contemporary Sociology

"The best book on contemporary youth culture."—Rolling Stone

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great research and a well-written book.......2007-01-13

The author's investigation into the cause of the teenage suicide pact that led to the deaths of the so-called "Bergenfield Four" subsequently revealed much about the suburban culture that spawned the tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars Holds up, still relevant and still touches a nerve.......2005-11-16

I recently reread this book and was pleased, yet unsurprised to, see how well it's held up. The books easily stands on it's own merits, however I have been compelled to write a review after reading some of the bilge that others have written. Mostly along the lines of "I knew these kids or I'm from Jersey and she shouldn't have written that book", and other unintelligent nonsense and blindfolded provincial tripe. Comparing Dr. Gaines to the Taliban is about as clever as someone comparing homosexuals with the devil. If someone is that stupid as to make that comparison, they're in over their empty head just reading the word sociology, much less a book on the subject.

I read this book not long after it's release. I considered myself a graduate of a similar 'teenage wasteland' on long island, and approached the subject matter with the critical eye of someone with years of experience of suburban malaise, suicidal cohorts and punk and metal soundtracks. After completing the book I was genuinely moved not only by her obvious empathetic treatment of the subject matter, but for her logical conclusions pertaining the conditions that made the events in the book not only understandable, but also unavoidable. She never judged the subjects of the book, and thus gained their confidence. Her personal connection to the events she was writing allowed her a keen insight into the situation she describes without sacrificing clinical, reasoned objectivity.

Not long after reading this book for the first time, I wrote to the author, thanking her for her efforts regarding a subject that I knew well. Instead of receiving a corporate form letter reply or a brush off, I received a personal response from the author and an invitation to discuss the book in person. The author, completely without pretension or hidden agendas, spent time with myself and my friends discussing the ubiquitous dementations, absurdities, and the poignancy of suburbia. She did so without asking anything of us, and we were not exploited or maltreated, nor were the subjects of this book.

The fact that she took the time to give equal time to suburban dirtbags for no other reason than we liked her book... and knew where she was from... speaks volumes of not only her character, but her integrity as well. I highly doubt that the same could be said of the books' critics.

1 out of 5 stars What a disgrace.......2004-08-08

Gaines should be put in the same category as Taliban. I grew up in Bergenfield, did lines with the Buress sisters', Olton, and Rizzo at Garvey's house. Yes, alot of children back then did waste time just as I did. But don't think that Gaines few moments in Bergenfield could sum it all up. Gaines knew nothing but to be a glory stealer for a book that was going to happen anyway. How about the other suicides, Like Paul Murphy and Chris Hurt. You should have done your math Gaines. Cooper's Pond had finger digits from snapping turtles that were restless. Gaines had nothing in mind but selfishness intentions. I'd like to meet Gaines and do a reminder. A product of the Teenage Wasteland she has described makes me think..I got a B.S of Science in M.E. a few years ago and I've been serving in the military as well. Ms. Gaines should remember me if we ever cross paths. Bergenfield was a town at that time that was showing the future. Ms. Gaines didn't see that, she just wrote a book....Words, they are so easy

1 out of 5 stars Self-important rubbish.......2003-10-21

Gaines spent a month in Bergenfield and tried to turn others' pain into her gain. The book reads like her website: Look at me! Look at me! Look at me! She should be ashamed of herself.

1 out of 5 stars I went to BHS and I hate this book!.......2003-07-29

I don't get it, did the author go to BHS? From the way this book is written, one gets the feeling that author can "feel the pain" of the teens of that time because she lived it. She didn't.
I did.
The author implies that this kind of stuff happens all the time with these burn outs in the ugly town of Bergenfield, what can you expect?
It ripped our town apart, and brought us together.
