Book Description
Our connection to the horse is ancient and visceral. These humble creatures are mentioned in the earliest samplings of the written word, which illustrates how the human/equine bond transcends cultural and economic barriers. The horse's integral role in man's evolution, society's development and the growth of civilizations is unquestioned; they have been immortalized by Hollywood, cherished by little girls and mourned by warriors. Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul is filled with inspiring stories of rescue and rehabilitation, heartbreaking losses, dedication and commitment, and positive messages of responsibility and unconditional love. Readers will enjoy uplifting and humorous stories that depict the horse's intelligence, versatility and intuitiveness; they will discover the horse's healing powers, marvel at the graceful performance of a Grand Prix Dressage winner, be awed by the stamina and strength of a working horse and the athletic prowess of a champion racer. In exchange for our love and companionship, horses teach us, heal us, protect us and guide us. Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul is a worthy celebration of a very noble creature.

A Horse to Ride to Your Soul.......2006-12-07
This much needed book offers readers an opportunity to feel better connected to their souls and the primal call within to connect to the beauty, strength, freedom and gentleness of not only horses but the Animal Kingdom in general. If you like or love horses, another book is also inspiring: ON THE TRAIL OF THE PONY EXPRESS by Cherokee author Jerry Ellis. He retraced the 2,000 mile route of the Pony Express Trail by horse, foot, covered wagon and canoe. The non-fiction adventure book is filled with the history and spirit of the Pony Express riders who became part of the great American West.
Good Book.......2006-11-30
I like horses, but I had a hard time getting into this book. Some of the stories were better than others. I think two of my favorite stories were the one about the Horse at Harvard and the one about the horses surrounding and protecting the baby. Most of the stories were good. This is a book about true horse stories.
Most Heartwarming Book.......2006-11-10
Horse people and non-horse people alike will fall in love with "Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul". This book contains seven sections of "Inspirational Stories About Horses and the People Who Love Them". The first section "A Special Bond" contains stories of the connection and friendship between humans and horses. "Horses as Teachers", the second section in the book, is filled with stories of how horses have taught us to take a break from the every day rat race and taught us a lesson or two on just enjoying life. The third section of this Chicken Soup book is called "These Amazing Animals". This section has many stories of the astonishing accomplishments of horses and the things they have helped us to do. Section four, "Horses as Healers", is the one section where you are sure to bawl your eyes out. It contains touching stories of horses helping us get over our fears and overcome any road blocks or rough patches in our lives. The "On Companionship and Commitment" part of the book is much like the first section, focusing on those unique horse-human bonds. "And... They're Off" is a special section dedicated fully to racehorses. Last but most certainly not least, is "Horse... Cetera" where all the other heartwarming stories are placed that just didn't fit into any of the other sections.
"Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul" is even great for people who aren't exactly "Horse Lovers". The book's main focus may be about horses but it is also about inspiration. On every page you are sure to find something that will really help you to live life to the fullest. When you're down in the dumps, "Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul" will help you to see that eventually, things will work out and everything will be okay. So get out there! Live your life like there's no tomorrow! Read "Chicken Soup for the Horse Lover's Soul"!

A Must For All Horse Fanciers.......2006-03-21
Before this collection and Chicken Soup For The Pet Lover's Soul, I had never before been remotely interested in the Chicken Soup series. I had assumed they were mostly self-help books, or religious or something. I was pleasently surprised when I read this sweet collection of stories. Quite contrary to my prejudices, it proved to be an inspirational, heart warming look at horses and how they alter our lives for the better. Whether you are an active equestrian, or simply an admirer of these noble animals, Chicken Soup For The Horse Lover's Soul will touch you all the same.

Book Description
Horses communicate with remarkable accuracy in a language of posture, gesture and sound. They express their needs, wishes and emotions to each other and to the rare human being who understands them. After reading this unprecedented, exciting and up-lifting book, you will understand the equine language. You therefore will know how to recognize:
A happy horse. A frightened horse. An angry horse. A bored horse. A grieving horse. A frustrated horse. A horse horse in pain. A playful horse. A proud horse. An eagerly competitive horse. And many horses more!
Moreover, you will know how to reassure the frightened, calm the angry, comfort the grieving, divert the bored -- and deal with most other human-equine difficulites. You will know how to educate a foal or rehabilitate a rogue. You will know how to look at race horses on their way to the starting gate and differentiate the likely winners from the losers.
You even will know how to buy a horse.
But best of all, you will finally understand what these grand animals are all about, and you will know better than ever before how they (and we) fit into nature's scheme of things.
Customer Reviews:
This book was a fantastic find!.......2007-02-09
Wow! There are 45 horses who are personal friends of mine, and after reading this book, I feel that I know them so much better now! I had already figured out many of their quirks and cute personality traits, and now I have a whole new insight. For example, now I understand that the reason Image is "attitudinal" is because his mama was lead mare when he was born, and he's not about to let anyone forget it. And Casanova is the "class clown" who, if he likes you, will entertain you for hours with his (sometimes annoying) antics like knocking the hat off my head, over and over again -- and if he doesn't like you, don't turn your back on him, or he'll nip you in the butt (but never hard), and by the time you turn around, he's looking the other way, as if to say, "Who did that? Not me!" There are stories in the book to match and top any I have to tell, including a senior horse who liked to play jokes on cows. It's a terrific read and very educational as well. If you are looking to buy a horse, there are tips for selecting one. And for those who enjoy horse racing, there are tips for betting on horses, based on observing their behavior before the race. There's something for everyone in this book.
Worth the short amount of time it takes to read--.......2006-11-27
I personally felt that this book is an awesome introduction to horses and their behavior. No, it does not go into great detail of body language, and it is not for the experienced horseman (I only bought this book because it was required for a class), BUT the book is worth your time. I think that this book offered an excellent perspective on undertanding the horse and why they do what they do. For example, just because the horse isn't doing what you want, doesn't necessarily mean that it's being a "bad" horse- there is an incredible array of things that could be the 'problem'; even though as I said this book will offer no new insights to experienced horsemen and women, it can be a very good reminder of why our horses do what they do. All in all, if you are a beginner to the horse world, pick this book up, and take a few hours to read it, it'll be worth the time and money.
A different view on horses I've read thus this far........2006-06-28
I'm a young horse lover and I spend much more time reading and studying horses in books, magazines, and other sources of trustworthy media than I do actually experiencing these beautiful animals up close. Nor am I lucky enough to be able to regularly work with them. I recently received "The Body Language of Horses" and I have blazed through this small book and found that it is very informative, observant, and suitable towards an aspiring horsewoman or horseman. It gives out clear, though thick, digestible pieces of horse psychology and body language offering ways to understand and `connect' with the equine. I give it a rating of four stars out of five because there is further searching in different books about horse language I have yet to discover and the horses themselves.
Thanks!
Sarah
The Body Language of Horses: Revealing the Nature..........2006-02-23
This is an excellent resource for a person who hasn't had much exposure to horses or has trouble interpreting the meaning of equine body language and sounds. Although, it was well written, and made some excellent points, it seemed quite basic and I didn't come to any new revalations about horses that would help or change my relationships with them.
States the obvious and strays off-topic........2004-04-16
I was rather disappointed with this book for several reasons. First and foremost, the bulk of the book does not, as the title would have us believe, focus on the body language of horses. A couple of chapters devote themselves to brief descriptions of horse behavior under different circumstances (when happy, angry, frightened, bored, tired, hot, cold, hungry, thirsty, etc.), but the largest sections of the book concern curing problem horses and training foals. At the end there is a chapter on observing the body language of racehorses in order to pick winners, and two appendices on how to buy a horse.
Not only does the book stray from it's purported topic, but the information that IS given about equine body language is so basic and obvious that any true horseperson would already know it, and any aspiring horseperson could learn it all in a matter of a few weeks spent around the creatures. Of course a nervous horse will work up a sweat, a bored horse will get mouthy, and a horse that is irritated by a fly will swish its tail and twitch its skin. There are really only two forseeable uses, in my mind, for this book. The first is as a reference for those who know next to nothing about horses and wish to learn. The second, a slightly different version of the first, is as a guide to non-equestrian racegoers in order to pick winning horses on which to place their bets (and this is not surefire or guaranteed in any way, since pre-race behavior is only one of many factors that determines the outcome of a race).
The book is also considerably old, and a bit dated. It was written and first published in 1980, more than two decades ago. While the basic behavior of horses hasn't changed in that time, much else in the horse world has, including attitudes toward the care and training of horses. There are now many more effecting training methods than those presented here, and one passage in the book even alarmed me. Though they pronounce it a "dubious last resort," the authors nevertheless included the following method for "[teaching] manners to a resistant horse":
". . . dramatic effects are obtained by striking the animal over the poll bone with a fragile wine bottle filled with a slush of sand and warm water. When the bottle breaks and the warm, moist substance dribbles down its head, the savage horse becomes a trembling wreck. A gestured threat to repeat the treatment is usually enough to terminate subsequent misbehavior" (pg. 49).
While this is the only place in the book where the authors propose such blatantly inappropriate methods, I nevertheless cannot give a vote of confidence to anyone that would condone striking an animal with a wine bottle to elicit compliance. In addition, the authors make a great many generalizations about equine behavior and do not allow much leeway for differences in personality. As any person who spends much time around horses knows, one can be vastly different from the next. I said earlier that this book had two conceivable uses, but even for those I would not recommend purchasing this book. There are other books out there on the behavior and training of horses that are more current, more accurate, and more effective.

Left wanting.......2005-05-30
Unfortunatley with this book, it didn't give me the information I was looking for. I have driven before, but have never broken a horse to harness, and wanted to make sure I was taking all the right precautions to do it right the frist tim.. I felt this book left alot of questions unasnwered, especially with the grainy and unclear drawings. The insctructions were very unclear and there was no concise "to the point" aspect about them. Honestly, I basically got a review of what I already knew, and felt this book would not be a help for someone breaking her horse to drive. If anythign it is a usefull reference for those already having experience in driving. After reading through it, this book is going in ebay.
Proceed with Caution.......2005-03-23
There is one significant part of this book with which I must take issue. After one succeeds in harnessing and then hitching the green horse to the cart, do NOT, under any circumstances, follow the book's advice to then lead the horse with the empty cart behind. I did this and the horse was so alarmed by the noise behind him that he took off with me running alongside, hanging on to the bridle, trying to get a badly frightened running horse to stop. We finally came to a fence, much to the relief of us both. Since then, I've spoken to several 'driving' trainers and all of them, without exception, say to never, ever lead a horse with an empty cart behind. If I had been unable to keep up with my panicked horse (and it was a miracle that I could) he would have wrecked and most probably his driving days would have been over. Following that horrible event, he had to go back to square one in his training and be brought slowly forward again.
LESS THAN DETAILED STUDY.......2004-09-10
Did I read the same book as the rest of these folks? Wefound the "illustrations" to be amateurish drawings with very little clear detail and the photos were from afar and grainy with no discernable detail. The sections on how to harness, and particularly the fit of the harness, were poorly organized and without enough details. Basically, the book is very wordy but without giving enough clear step-by-step instructions and sharp diagrams and photos to really make the reader certain that they are proceeding correctly.
In reading and preparing for the first few lessons I felt secure that I had JUST enough information from the book to carry out her instructions. In practice, we got as far as the training shafts. We constructed them per her measurements, and tried to follow all of her instructions. Unfortunately for a rank novice there was not enough detailed information about how long the traces ought to be on a correctly fitted harness or how far and high from the horse's back legs the cross member should safely be positioned. Our first session in the "poles" was nearly disasterous. We were left with many questions regarding the correctness of our harness and/or should we have modified it in some way to make the exercise more successful. We found ourselves peering at the grainy photos straining to glean some detail that might explain why our set-up didn't fit her description. In reviewing the material we found that should we survive to hitch the horse to a cart, we would be uncertain as to similar details about distances, heights, lengths, etc.
Great Beginners Book.......2004-04-23
Doris L Ganton presents all of the wonderful information in this book in a clear, easy to understand format complete with pictures and detailed drawings to depict exactly what she is talking about. Great book for the first time driver, or someone new to training. This is an excellent buy!
Excellent starter book for the novice.......2003-01-30
Good pictures to go along with the guides to each part of the harness and its use. Very helpful book.

Book Description
Michaela Bancroft is expanding her training and riding business by buying four new horses from colleague Audrey Pratt. Then Audrey is found in the stalls, strangled to death with a pair of reins, and it's up to Michaela to corral a killer-or she's next.
Customer Reviews:
You don't have to love horses to love this mystery.......2007-08-23
Michaela Bancroft and her friend and colleague Audrey Pratt attend the Quarter Horse Races together. After the races they plan to look at some horses. Michaela is expanding her training business to include riding lessons.
Unfortunately, Audrey is found strangled to death with a pair of reins after the race. The cops begin looking for her brother Bob who has been missing for a few days. They think he started drinking again and killed his sister. Michaela doesn't believe this. She's concerned there may be a connection between his disappearance and her death.
As she begins to investigate, she finds many secrets and ends up in some sticky situations. Can she find out what happened to Bob and who killed Audrey without putting herself into jeopardy?
Even though I'm not a horse person, I love this series. Michaela is such a fun character. All of the other characters enhance the series. I also like the California setting.
The writer gives enough information about horses to interest the reader but not so much that only horse lovers would enjoy the series. The mystery is plotted out well with plenty of suspects and twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I highly recommend this book and series.
Can't put it down.......2007-06-14
The suspense is thrilling in this book. I love the main character, Michaela because she is a loyal friend, an animal lover and provider, and sweetly naive about her relationships with men. I started this book on the plane and could not put it down the whole flight. I am dying for the next one. I give it 5 stars for it's excellent story line and use of verbage. INTRIGUING!~

Product Description
This book is all about the beautiful and timeless bond between horses and humans. The true stories illustrate the many facets of the horse:human connection. The horse is seen as a teacher, as a therapist, as a friend and a family member. He is a partner in athletic pursuit, a friend who is there when no one else seems to care.
The book is not only for dyed in the wool horse lovers. It also serves as a bridge for those who love someone who loves horses, to help foster a better understanding of what that passion is all about. And for those who are just plain, animal lovers, it helps bring greater awareness of why horses are such special souls.
In addition I hope to accomplish a softening of the lines that so often divide various disciplines and breeds. Often we get stuck in our ruts--dressage is the only way to ride, or barrel racers are the only ones who have fun. I hope to cross those barriers, to help all horse people recognize that a good horse is a good horse no matter what its lineage or what its job is, and that we are all united by our love for this magnificent animal.

Beyond Chicken Soup.............2006-03-03
Jamieson takes us on a journey beyond the traditional horse-rider relationship. She brings the world of emotionally intelligence (EQ) insights to that relationship. Intuitively these individual stories recognize the individualized nature of the horse-rider experience - on both sides. Yet her message in each of these stories is clear. When the horse-rider relationship reaches that unique level of connected communication it is a transformational experience for both parties because they become part of an experience that is far greater than both of them. It is beyond the riding experience. It is that rare kind of experience that living creatures can have when they are connected by some force bigger than themselves. When this happens it is transformational for both the horse and rider. They live life differently after this transformation because they now know the power of EQ. Jamieson presents this lesson in various forums through multiple horse-rider experiences. Her message is clear and she is determined to engage her readers in feeling it through the EQ of the reading itself. Her mission is direct albeit difficult. She is hellbent on changing the world 1 heart at a time. Let her touch yours!
