Book Description

Resentment. Fear. Self-pity. Intolerance. Anger. This cast of character defects will undermine the best-laid plans for recovery from addiction. It's not uncommon for individuals in recovery to hang on to negative, self-defeating behaviours after they've given up their addiction. These are the "rocks" that can sink recovery - or, at the least, block further progress. With more than 100,000 copies sold, "Drop the Rock" is the definitive guide to removing character defects that can prevent gratifying, long-standing recovery. Based on the Twelve Step program, particularly the principles behind Steps Six and Seven, "Drop the Rock" combines personal stories, practical advice, and powerful insights to help readers move forward in recovery. The second edition features additional stories, a reference section, and information about starting a "Drop the Rock" sudy group.

5 out of 5 stars WOW is right.......2007-10-04

The author calls 6 & 7 the forgotten steps. I worked the 12 steps with a sponsor and am working through them again. I picked up this book along with a real desire for real change in my life. I've been merrily going along my sober way but this book had me digging deep to bring those shortcomings to light. This is a must have for anyone working the 12 steps with an honest desire for change.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritaulity on the Graduate Level .......2007-07-27

Bill Wilson referred to AA as a 'Spiritual Kindergarten'. If that is so, then the material in 'Drop The Rock' is for those of us at the Masters or Doctoral level.

This book is NOT for the newcomer. Nor is it for those who are blissfully filling their days by 'not drinking and going to meetings'. 'Drop The Rock' is clearly targeted at those who have been sober for some time, but find there are still persistent annoying life problems that resist the all the work one has put into fixing these flaws.

This book is short, concise and to the point. The authors have left out much of the new-agey recovery jargon and slogans that weighs down most meetings. Instead, they approach Steps 6&7 from a practical and logical perspective which demystifies the two steps on which so much of our future happiness hangs.

It is an excellent book. One which you could build a meeting or study group around. However, the book is not for everyone. 'Drop The Rock' is only for those who know the intense hunger of desiring real change in life.

Wow! I have been in the program for almost 24 years and this is one of the best books on the 6th and 7th steps I have ever read. i am buying 10 copies to have for all of my friends in the program who after many years still suffer from hanging on to our character defects. i recommend it to anyone in the program. its about taking action!

4 out of 5 stars Very good sobriety.......2007-04-01

For those who need it, and unforunately there are a great many of us, this is a fine book for the "midpoint" of the 12 steps. It is a good place to stop, the first time thru or on a revisit, and re evaluate what you are doing. This book focuses on the reality on that many recovering alcoholics have begun to do the steps by number and by rote at this stage. They have given up drinking, and little else. The book focuses on the need, and the techniques, for dropping the other character flaws which weighted down our spiritual backpaack. A fine and needed book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Supplement.......2007-01-10

The book elaborates on these Steps and makes them a easier to understand from a newcomer's point of view.

This is not your regular diet book, full of lots of great information and very easy to understand

5 out of 5 stars What a smart man!.......2007-09-04

I see the other reviews and I say the same thing. If you get the kit, and listen to the tapes. You will lose weight. I was 365 and lost 60lbs in less then 3 months. I have a lot more to lose. But if your so heavy you can't do work outs. Even when you try to walk - You leg starts to swell. And your doctor agrees- you need to lose some weight before you can do anything. Because you could have a heart attack. This is the diet. You eat real food. But you must eat. A heavy person is not heavy because of eating to much. Its the right foods and to eat. Don't skip meals. As for the blue print. When you see your doctor. He can tell you were your problem spots are growing. So you can get the right diet. Michael has done so much for my life. I don't have to cry every night because my legs or my sugar is threw the ceiling. I am feeling like a person now. If you need to lose weight now. Read it, do it. Do it for your self.

5 out of 5 stars yes it does work.......2007-08-29

the book is a good place to start, but get the whole kit, no not every one lose 30lb in 6week (up to 30) but the more you have to lose that more you will lose. I reg person who got this kit and have been on this program for 12 weeks not and I have loss so far 56lb, but you have to be truly willing to change your bad habits. If you eat the way you should you not hungry cause you fill up on vegs, and with drinking all the water you stay full. The real secret to the plan is the mind set

2 out of 5 stars Confused ?.......2007-08-24

I originally purchased this book as my daughter wanted to buy the 6 week makeover package for $300.00. I thought that if the 6 day makeover worked, then we would continue with the 6 week package. On purchasing the book, we had to decided our body types - totally confusing !!!! Neither my daughter nor myself could decide what body types we were - the one I chose was to eat meat 4 times a day - I am almost a vegetarian !!!
I am glad that I purchased the book, but found that the body typing was not consistent- too many choices, that lead to different diets.

5 out of 5 stars It really works!.......2007-08-23

I read some bad reviews on here about it not being enuf food. Apparently, these people did not do it or else they'd be singing the praises like the rest of those who actually did it!

I am very overweight. When I started the 6 Day...I weighed in at 265lbs. 6 days later I weighed in at 256lbs.

My top weight was 283lbs almost 3 months ago. I worked out...walked the park and treadmill like a mad woman to lose only 4lbs in the first month. The second month I tried Alli...which allowed an additional 13lbs but pills are not something I can live with forever. Then I tried this. Amazingly, I was very satisfied for 97% of the 6 days. A few times I woke in the middle of the night with some growling...really, and I just had a little fruit or portion of meat and at the end...I still lost 9 whole pounds.

Of course, any diet can work but this one teaches you to eat to live not to live to eat. Salt is bad for us especially people like me (African American). Toooo many of us die every year of High Blood Pressure because of toooo much sodium.

If you give it a try with an open mind and let your taste adjust...like a baby, you will really learn to enjoy vegetables in their natural state and herbs and spices instead of just salt.

Don't get me wrong...salt to me is delicious but my health and life taste so much better mentally!

You'll learn a lot of stuff about how to breath properly, how to exercise properly and tons of other stuff. Maybe you're a fitness, nutrition wiz but for me it was very educational and has changed my life!

Thanks Michael Thurmond!

Oh, and apparently the man knows what he's talking about if he was the expert on a top, Hollywood show!

Book Description

Prototype and Scriptaculous are libraries that extend standard Ajax. They make it easier to program Ajax and provide powerful features like drag and drop and animation. In this book, developers learn by playing and see how the libraries work in the real world.

As experience with Ajax increases, developers want the standard Ajax capabilities they repeatedly use to be preprogrammed for them--and that's exactly what Ajax libraries do for them. They reduce the pain of handling cross-browser inconsistencies, they add useful language features, and provide sophisticated functionality. Of these, Prototype is the most popular JavaScript and Ajax framework for low-level user interface features such as animation, drag and drop, and pre-built widgets. Together, they free the developer up to concentrate on building the application. They make a rich user experience easy to achieve.

This book guides the reader through the Prototype and Scriptaculous libraries feature-by-feature. In just 350 pages, readers will find over 100 small working examples to help them explore the libraries. As well, they will develop a web-based image gallery that teacher them how to use Prototype and Scriptaculous in the real-world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch tome.......2007-06-25

Javascript has exploded onto the web development scene in the last few years, and powers much of the web 2.0 and Ajax revolution. Every web developer now needs to know how to do common Ajax tasks. Thankfully, Prototype and Scriptaculous In Action makes it both easy and enjoyable.

This is a comprehensive book. The size (510 pages) was initially intimidating, but Prototype and Scriptaculous In Action is exceedingly well written and a genuine pleasure to read. The thorough and thoughtful organization of the book provides some real structure to the discussion, making complex subjects easily digestible. This is the defacto bible of Prototype and Scriptaculous, and these days I turn to this book more than anything else on my shelf.

The book is divided up into four multi-chapter parts, any of which could stand on it's own as a definitive guide. The chapters are full of useful examples, and there's strong emphasis given to migrating existing sites to Prototype and Scriptaculous, which is a major plus. You could turn to any section of the book and immediately see how to inject some new behavior into your existing application, but if you take the time to read from cover-to-cover you'll be rewarded with some deep understanding of both the libraries and Javascript itself.

I'll summarize the four parts of the book:

Part 1, Getting Started, introduces the Prototype and Scriptaculous libraries, focusing heavily on Prototype and Ajax. There's a lot of information on re-designing an existing site for Ajax. Two full chapters are devoted to Prototype's Ajax features. You can get up and running VERY quickly after glancing through these chapters. There's also a lot of depth, and consideration is given to the pervasive effects Ajax has on architectural issues and the new ways that an application will have to manage HTTP traffic.

Part 2, Scriptaculous Quickly, covers effects, controls and drag-n-drop. This is hands-down the best Scriptaculous documentation currently available, anywhere. The core effects are explored and tweaked, and there's lot of very practical examples demonstrating some of the niftiest stuff, like running effects in parallel versus sequentially. And the drag-and-drop coverage is incredibly clear, making it easy, almost trivial, to implement. The Scriptaculous coverage is indispensable, and you'll return to it again and again if you implement Scriptaculous-enabled pages.

Part 3, Prototype in Depth, explores Prototype's Javascript-oriented features. There's a fantastic chapter on functions contexts, and the discussion of closures is one of the best I've seen. There's a lot of information about Javascript fundamentals, and how Prototype can be used to implement inheritance, address arrays, and manipulate the DOM in the browser.

And finally, Part 4 Advanced Topics, has two unrelated chapters. The first chapter overhauls an example app, giving it a Prototype and Scriptaculous makeover. The last chapter is about integration with Ruby on Rails. Prototype was initially written as the Ajax interface to Rails, so there's some strong integration.

As a long-time enterprise web developer, dealing with Javascript has always been a chore. But now I actually (gasp) look forward to tasks that involve Javascript. I'm a convert, and I have Prototype and Scriptaculous in Action to thank.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-22

I wrote a longer review that Amazon has apparently lost. Oh well. This is an excellent book, very well written. The authors are the rarest kind of technical author: they can actually construct prose that is pleasant to read, not deadly boring, but which works well as a reference book later. The book's organized thoughtfully--it's certainly much more than just an API reference. There's also quite a lot of general advanced Javascript information here, too.

There's at least one other book on these libraries in production from Pragmatic Programmers. If you're considering that, I strongly suggest downloading the sample chapters of both books and comparing. The Crane book is much more appealing to me (not to mention it's available now, not in six months).

3 out of 5 stars Basic libraries coverage with a good example application........2007-04-19

This book lacked detailed coverage of the programming techniques and advanced topics of prototype and scriptaculous. The authors covered the basics by discussing only the API's of the libraries (more attention was given to scriptaculous API's, even though its usage is obvious and prototype API's are more extensive). With 500 pages and the libraries as the title, I expected details about the inner workings of the API's and discussions about its usages/ applications. Instead, 150 pages were devoted to verbose repetitive coverage of scriptaculous' API, which could easily have fitted into 50 pages at most. ALL of the info on scriptaculous could easily have been read online at its wiki site - the book provided no further insight (ch. 5 is especially useless)! Prototype's coverage was decent, but lacked details on several parts of its API. Although prototype and scriptaculous are tightly integrated with Rails, there was only 1 chapter devoted to its discussion, which served more like an overview than a usage guide. Based on content on the libraries alone, I would give this book 3 stars. However, if you're in need of an example application, then it may deserve 4 stars. This book provides a good example of applying prototype's ajax and scriptaculous web 2.0 techniques to a photo gallery website. It shows the advantages these libraries have over plain javascript and dhtml. The extra 100 pages wasted on scriptaculous would better serve Rails' RJS templates or a more complete/ thorough discussion of prototype. Of course it can be argued that the book is not titled, "Prototype, Scriptaculous, and Rails in Action," but it should be.

Book Description

Valerie Simpson is a young female tennis star with a troubled past who's now on the verge of a comeback and wants Myron as her agent. Myron, who's also got the hottest young male tennis star, Duane Richwood, primed to take his first grand slam tournament, couldn't be happier. That is, until Valerie is murdered in broad daylight at the U.S. Open and Myron's number one client becomes the number one suspect.

Clearing Duane's name should be easy enough. Duane was playing in a match at the time of Valerie's death. But why is his phone number in Valerie's black book when he claims only to have known her in passing? Why was she calling him from a phone booth on the street? The police stop caring once they pin the murder on a man known for having stalked Valerie and seen talking to her moments before the murder. But Myron isn't satisfied. It seems too clean for him.

Myron pries a bit and finds himself prying open the past where six years before, Valerie's fiancee, the son of a senator, was brutally murdered by a juvenile delinquent and a straight-A student was subsequently gunned down on the street in retaliation, his death squandered in bureaucratic files. And everyone from the Senator to the mob want Myron to stop digging.

The truth beneath the truth is not only dangerous, it's deadly. And Myron may be the next victim.

In novels that crackle with wit and suspense, Edgar Award winner Harlan Coben has created one of the most fascinating and complex heroes in suspense fiction—Myron Bolitar—a hotheaded, tenderhearted sports agent who grows more and more engaging and unpredictable with each page-turning appearance.

Harlan Coben spins a dramatic series with Myron Bolitar that out does Evanovich's Plum. It's intelligent and yet funny, funny. I intend to read the entire awesome Bolitar series.

I've read 3 of the "Myron Bolitar Mysteries" during the past month...what fun! The story lines are very well written; a page-turner filled with intrigue and lots of laughs! I can't wait to read another.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed It.......2007-05-10

This is my second Myron Bolitar book. I enjoyed this one just as much as the first. It was definitely easier to figure out who was doing what but you didn't know why or how. I'm not going to write a plot summary since so many others have already did that. I really enjoyed the interplay between the main character, Myron and his friends/coworkers. I love Win. He's so intense. I enjoyed that Mr. Coben brought back a lot of the players from his first book in this series and built on them. I think we're going to find more and more and more out about Win and Myron's past. However, I didn't enjoy that Mr. Coben didn't delve further into the past when he was wrapping the story up. It was almost like he just wanted it to hurry up and end. I would have liked a more detailed ending. I highly recommend this book and this series that Harlan Coben has created.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-05-10

First time reader of this author and thoroughly enjoyed his humor, depth and understanding of the human "being."

5 out of 5 stars Rollicking Fun!.......2007-04-10

This second installment of the Myron Bolitar series will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. This mystery takes place on the tennis circuit, but you don't have to be a tennis fan to enjoy it.

Book Description

Losing has never felt better than with Jillian Michaels, the female fitness guru on Network Nine's hit show The Biggest Loser, who presents a unique and comprehensive health and fitness program that will keep the pounds off for good.

Jillian Michaels knows a thing or two about getting people to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. In her new book, Winning by Losing, Jillian offers a comprehensive and integrated program that provides readers with a clear–cut path to total health. Unlike other popular diet books, Winning by Losing works from the inside out, combining a behavioral makeover with a unique diet plan and a no–gimmick workout.

The book is divided into three parts: "Self," "Science," and "Sweat." "Self" focuses on behavior patterns, and shows how unchecked urges and emotional roadblocks lead to unhealthy eating habits. Jillian will help readers address and overcome these issues completely, an accomplishment that is the first and most crucial step towards leading a healthier lifestyle. "Science" is the book's nutritional facet, in which Jillian teaches readers how to create their own personalized diets. This section will help readers identify their own unique biochemical and metabolic needs, arming them with the knowledge they need to formulate a diet plan far more effective than generic ones offered in other books. "Sweat" utilizes Jillian's expertise to give readers an integrated workout program that combines the most effective elements of different training styles. It doesn't promise to be easy – but it works and lasts.

While there are several recognizable men at the top of the fitness guru chain, including Bill Phillips and Jorge Cruise, this category has yet to see a new female occupy the spotlight. Jillian Michaels is attractive, knowledgeable, and dynamic, and is the perfect candidate to be the next big thing in fitness/health books.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-10-10

First off I'm a big fan of Jillian Michaels. I love her on the Biggest Loser, and find her "tough love' style incredibly motivating. This book is just great. It cuts through all of the BS of fad diets, and does a great job of helping you determine exactly how and what you should be eating for great results. She combines science in her method which helps the reader to completely understand his/her body, and what, why, and how someone gains/loses weight. I'm a student pursuing a degree in Dietetics and kinesiology, and this book reinforces what I'm learning throughout my education. I've had a weight problem my whole life, and recently ( 2 years ago) have lost and maintained a loss of 65 pounds. I am battling those last 10 pounds, and I feel that this book will really help me get to my ultimate goal. Whether you have 200 or 20 pounds to lose, this book, with its startling facts and figures, will help you reach your goal!

This is by far the best informational upright health and fitness book I've read so far, and I've read a lot. Jillian is right there talking to you, strait and to the point. No fooling around. Problems and solutions. She explains things so simply. You either do or don't. It's really like she's talking directly to you. So easy and user friendly. She really knows her stuff. First health & nutrition, what works what doesn't. Then exercise and exactly how to do each and every one (with pictures) whether at home or when you get to the gym, so you look like you know what you're doing. I highly recommend this book and Jillian for the novice and for those who have drifted way away (me) and want to get their body back. Thanks Jillian. Wish you were my personal trainer!

Book Description

The bestselling author of Lovers & Players returns with her 25th fabulous novel and her most beloved character...Get ready for the scandalously scintillating read only Jackie Collins can deliver!
Lucky Santangelo is back with a vengeance--still every bit as strong, sexy, and seductive as ever! But Lucky is older and wiser, and hot to reclaim her power position in Las Vegas. However, a deadly enemy from her past has resurfaced--a person determined to take everything from her, including the family she holds so dear: two sons and an out-of-control teenage daughter who is just as outrageous as Lucky herself. Like mother, like daughter. And if that old saying holds true, it’s going to be one wild ride.
Internationally bestselling author Jackie Collins marks her twenty-fifth novel with “another page-turning tale packed with intrigue, revenge and romance,” (Publishers Weekly on Lovers and Players). Aren't we lucky?!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars very disappointing.......2007-10-08

I read the Lucky Santangalo books some 20 plus years ago. They were good then. I bought Drop Dead Beautiful thinking Jackie Collins has aged 20 years,(as have I!), surley with age comes deeper writing! I was wrong. It seemed to me as if an 18 year old wrote this book. I much prefer Nora Roberts' books.

5 out of 5 stars Lucky's baaack!!.......2007-09-11

I've been a hugh fan for years! Loved this book! Additionally, would recommend: Take Your Shirt Off: A Novel of Hollywood. Buy it, read it!

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite Up To Par............2007-09-07

It pains me to say this because I have been a HUGE Jackie Collins fan for many many years, but this book is just lacking like the others never did. Hard to explain why, exactly. I can say that the constant self-praise of the Santangelo family, Lucky, Gino, etc., both in the characters' thoughts AND in their dialogue, really got on my nerves.

Also, I have always liked Lucky, but she was very bitchy and impatient in this book.

Not the best, but of course I would still recommend it to any Jackie Collins fan.

5 out of 5 stars Feel the heat!.......2007-08-28

Another in the saga that is the story of Lucky Santangelo. From the exotic to the comic this story has plenty of bang!

3 out of 5 stars ok.......2007-08-23

I thought the book was ok. I thought that being it was a Jackie Collins
book I expected a lot more to the story. I like Jackie Collins books
but this one was just ok.

Book Description

Yes, you can have the carbs you love and lose weight-and it's healthier for you, too! Just follow this revolutionary, satisfying eating plan from beloved fitness guru Denise Austin. If you love carbs, you've looked at the low-carb diets that are all the rage and despaired of ever finding a program that works for you. Denise knows the feeling. As an active person, Denise knew she had to keep carbs in her life-they gave her power and endurance for her demanding days. Daunted by low-carb diets, she searched for a diet that would allow her to eat carbs and not gain weight. Instead, she discovered a diet that helped her lose weight.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Low Calorie, Complex Carb, Low Glycemic Diet Book.......2006-05-23

Denise Austin's book, if you follow her plan, will help you lose weight. It comes from keeping calories very low (fewer than 1500 a day), eating complex carbs and protein, and exercising. There is nothing here that a person cannot get off the internet for free or in a fitness magazine from the grocery store. Austin has "daily dozen" exercises, which are a cross between yoga moves and calisthenics, and she says 30 minutes of walking a day is also necessary. Duh. She also points out the the Daily Dozen are really for people who are sedentary and not those who already are pretty fit. Another thing that bugged me was that she "tried" the low-carb diet for ONE day and it made her tried and cranky so she KNEW that it was bogus. Well, I'm not saying Atkins is the way to go, but when I went off sweets for a month I wanted to die either by my own hand or someone else's -- I was so miserable with headaches and mood swings that I thought I was hitting early menopause, yet no one would tell me that I should keep eating Hostess Ding Dongs if they make me feel better.

My biggest complaints about the book are the repetition (most of the book seems to be filler) and the way the author frequently refers to her "fans." It just got on my nerves, but that is a personal dislike and other readers may never even notice it.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of info, not enough good recipes.......2006-03-16

Denise is great with providing a ton of useful information in this book. The recipes weren't as appealing as I thought they would be. I read the book for the first couple days that I had it, but haven't opened it since. The recipes really did nothing for me to actually attempt to make them.

1 out of 5 stars If anyone eats 1300 calories..........2006-01-21

you are going to lose weight. I don't care what you eat. I was initially attracted to this book because I agree that eating "no carbs" is a gimmick and nutritionally unsound. But to claim that diabetics can eat small portions of white flour and sugar is like telling an alcoholic they can just have one glass of wine. Irresponsible!

5 out of 5 stars Yes Carbs and yummy foods even my kids like eatting!!!.......2006-01-17

I borrowed this book from the library as I wasn't sure if I would like it. I like Denise Austin and use her tapes but I wasn't sure about her diet, plus I was considering the glycemic diet as well. I liked the fact that this diet is very simliar to the principles followed in the glycemic diet, except it uses the glycemic load of the food (a more updated version based on newer studies), which allows more foods I personally like and are extremely health beneficial to be eaten like watermelon, pineapple, etc. This diet doesn't leave me feeling hunger or having cravings like other diets I have been on. I have read the entire book and have been following the diet plan for 11 days and have lost 7 lbs in the first week! I like it so much I am going to buy the book something I never do, because this diet suits me so well.

I tried south beach and did lose 30 lbs while on it (which over the course of the holidays was regained), but now finding myself being a single mother of 2 children, I wanted less time consuming recipes with afforable foods that my children would like eatting too, this plan has that.

If you don't want to or can't cook all your meals Denise gives you guidelines for substitutions, eatting out, how to maintain once you reach your goal weight. She does suggest you follow her plan as written for the first 28 days but she is reasonable and even advises if there is something you don't like, have a food allergy, or is simply not to your taste substitute it with another meal from the plan you do like or with a food from the substitution list.

Denise also gives guidelines for exercising which is stressed as key for life long health, steady weight loss, and maintenance.

The only thing that would of made this book better is a shopping list for each week of the plan since she would like you to follow the plan exactly during that time. I understand way she didn't after the first 28 days you can mix and substitute rendering the lists useless, but it still would of been nice.

That said I would highly recommend this diet to anyone who loves carbs and enjoys cooking healthy tasty meals.

3 out of 5 stars antiquated.......2005-10-20

I have read a few of Denise Austin's books. Frankly, I think her methods are a bit antiquated. The Glycemic Load index that she bases her entire book on is really just a reinvention of the glycemic index diet. Despite the fact that the glycemic load is an improved version of the glycemic index it simply isn't enough to base an entire book on. Frankly, books that do this better are the LA SHAPE DIET or WINNING BY LOSING. All in all, I think Denise is outdated and derivative. Wouldn't waste money on this one.

Book Description

“Linda Howard is a superbly original storyteller.”
–Iris Johansen

Blair Mallory has already survived one murder attempt. Now, while planning her wedding and dealing with holiday-season madness, Blair once again dodges a bullet. Or more precisely, a Buick. And though the driver’s identity remains a mystery, his or her murderous intentions are all too clear.

Or are they? After all, Blair’s homicidal ex-husband and his partner in crime/wife are safely behind bars. And even Wyatt Bloodsworth, her police detective groom-to-be, isn’t inclined to believe she’s being targeted again. All of which makes Blair wonder if her close call was simply a mishap. But the wondering stops when she narrowly cheats death again in another seemingly innocent accident. Two strikes is all it takes to convince Blair that she’s back in someone’s crosshairs. And the only thing more frightening is that Wyatt still doubts her. That means this time, no one will be watching Blair’s back when she sets out to get the drop on her would-be killer–before whoever it is finally drops her.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars fast paced and sexy.......2007-08-21

I had fun visiting again with the hero and heroine from To Die For. The suspense is taut and the relationship between Blair and Wyatt is electric. I felt like Blair had grown since the last book, which she needed. I wouldn't mind another read about these two. Linda Howard writes excellent characterization and captivating suspense.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and Clever.......2007-08-11

Now I know people either love or hate this book. I loved it. I love Blair. I wouldn't want to hang out with her in real life (which is often a gauge for me with a character) but I think she's a far more interesting and complicated romance heroine than we see very often.

Blair is shallow. Yep. She complains. Yep. But she fiercely loves the people in her life and she runs her own business and takes care of what's hers. I admire that. I admire how she manages Wyatt, a major alpha male if they ever existed! And I also love her ability, if only in her head, to admit her faults.

Wyatt is one of those heroes who works in the hands of only a very few authors. Most would emasculate him or turn him into a complete *ss. Howard can walk that line with great skill. Oh there were times when he fall to the *sshole side of the line, but his apolgies were genuine and believable.

I think first person works well with this couple. Wyatt is such a big character, you can see him through Blair's eyes and understand him as she does. And it softens Blair too. We don't need inside Wyatt's head to know how he feels about Blair, he's with her and he loves her. Anyway, loved it.

1 out of 5 stars Boring!.......2007-05-29

Drop Dead Gorgeous, To Die For (Sequel) was a waste of money. (I have the two books in Hardcopy) Amazon has the books in paperback. It was written in First Person. I tried! I just couldn't get into the book. In Third Person, you get into other characters and feel what they're feeling. I have always liked LH books. And, if possibly I try to get my favorite Authors their books in HC. Unfortunately, these are not keepers. Try her older books if you haven't already. (After the Night the Bathroom scene was sooo funny) I think, After the Night was the best book LH Has Written!! Its only my opinion. You're the only one, who can decide. If you wish to read Drop Dead Gorgeous.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it..........2007-05-22

Although I preferred the 1st book in this series (To Die For), I found myself loving this book as well. My only disappointment was that I figured out who the "bad-guy" was at the first available opportunity. I even guessed what their relationship was to Blair. With that being my only complain I loved this book. The first person is a huge plus to me. I didn't feel the need to go into Wyatt's head in either of these books & Although I found Blair to be very spoiled & annoying I enjoyed viewing the story through her eyes because she very witty, funny & sneaky. I highly recommend this 2-book series.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first book.......2007-05-01

As a sequel to "To Die For", this book was not as good. And it was no "Mr. Perfect" but still a fun read. To me this is another "if you can buy it used, do it" kind of book.

The curious, protean nature of water has fascinated people for ages, and Walter Wick--the photographer of Scholastic's highly acclaimed I Spy series--is no exception. Wick is a great admirer and collector of 100-year-old science books where, according to his afterword, "Even the simplest experiments appeared as if improbable or impossible things were happening. Intrigued, I recreated some of the experiments and photographed them with my camera. The results seemed magical, but not because of any photographic trick; it was only the forces of nature at work. It was from these explorations that the idea for this book emerged."

As you're admiring the "crown" created by a water drop splashing into a pool, or how many water droplets can fit on the head of a pin (the smallest droplet on the pin contains more than three trillion water molecules), you'll learn about evaporation, condensation, snowflakes, how clouds form, and more amazing water tricks. Wick's other artfully composed photographs include a "wild wave" caused by a brown egg dropped in a water glass, soap bubbles with a "shimmering liquid skin," a snowflake at 60 times its actual size, and dew on a spider web. Like many old-fashioned science books, A Drop of Water ends with a list of simple experiments may lure the young reader into the world of scientific investigation. Unlike many old science books, this one also stands on its own as a beautiful, notable collection of photographs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A perfect science picture book.......2006-03-27

Beautiful pictures and a wide variety of science related to water is illustrated. A thoughtful teacher grades 3-8 could easily construct a full science unit from this well constructed picture book.

5 out of 5 stars Photographic wonder.......2004-12-19

This book is a must have for any school library or homeschool science collection. Wick is perhaps best known for his "I Spy" books but here he is demonstrating his incredible talent with a science subject. He captures the essence of a water drop, the nature of steam, the momentary existence of a soap bubble and a snowflake in exquisite beauty. He shows us what our own eyes cannot fathom. Use this book to teach and learn about the water cycle, states of matter or art appreciation. The book pairs wonderfully with "Snowflake Bentley" by Jacqueline Briggs Martin.

5 out of 5 stars Really Descriptive.......2003-11-30

This helped me alot while performing my science project. It's cool to everyone I know no matter what their age was...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read-along for Classical Homeschoolers.......2002-08-25

I am doing 3rd grade chemistry based on the Well-Trained Mind. This read-along was excellent for our chemistry experiments on molecules, and I look forward to using it several times with the other topics it presents. The photos are absolutely stunning. Even though the reading level is higher than 3rd grade, the focus is on the photos - and they do a wonderful job of rounding out the student's grasp of the concepts. My husband and I both learned something new, and even the 6 and 3-year-olds are pointing out condensation and water vapor along with their third-grade brother.

Included in the back are suggested experiments for those who do nature study along the lines of Charlotte Mason's theories. Definitely a keeper.

3 out of 5 stars A Drop of Water.......2000-06-12

The pictures in this book are excellent, but the reading level is not 4-8 as listed. The level is about 6th grade and above.

Book Description

Revised and updated, a compact guide to the beverage that keeps us running.

A freshly updated edition of the best introduction to one of the world's most popular products, The Coffee Book is jammed full of facts, figures, cartoons, and commentary covering coffee from its first use in Ethiopia in the sixth century to the rise of Starbucks and the emergence of Fair Trade coffee in the twenty-first. The book explores the process of cultivation, harvesting, and roasting from bean to cup; surveys the social history of café society from the first coffeehouses in Constantinople to beatnik havens in Berkeley and Greenwich Village; and tells the dramatic tale of high-stakes international trade and speculation for a product that can make or break entire national economies. It also examines the industry's major players, revealing how they have systematically reduced the quality of the bean and turned a much-loved product into a commodity and lifestyle accoutrement, ruining the lives of millions of farmers around the world in the process.

Finally, The Coffee Book, hailed as a Best Business Book by Library Journal when it was first published, considers the exploitation of labor and damage to the environment that mass cultivation causes, and explores the growing "conscious coffee" market and Fair Trade movement.

The coffee can cover attracted my attention, as did the handy take-to-cafe dimensions of The Coffee Book, plus I was pleasantly surprised by the contents. Not your usual non-fiction reader, the ample visuals helped hold my highly caffeinated short attention span. Learn more about your beloved legal stimulant and enjoy it even more!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Book on History of Coffee.......2006-05-30

Fascinating book on the history of coffee, well written and style that flows makes the stories easy to follow . You find yourself winding through time and all the crazy social ramifications coffee has had on a variety of cultures - including European and American. Highly recommend for coffee drinkers curious to know how the cup of coffee they drink and today's coffee houses came into being.

5 out of 5 stars The Coffee Book: Anatomy of an Industry from Crop to the Last Drop, Revised and Updated Edition.......2006-05-24

This is a must read for anyone who works with or loves drinking coffee. If you're looking for a crash course in the history, economics behind or current politics of the coffee industry, look no further!

1 out of 5 stars Yawwwwwwn..........2004-01-07

I had hoped to read a thoughtful and measured history of coffee/the coffee trade. Instead, I found The Coffee Book to be heavy-handed, one-sided and didactic. Big Business Bad! Imperialism and Colonialism responsible for the Ills of the World! I had to force myself to finish it, and recently sold it for 50 cents at a garage sale. I feel a wee bit guilty; I think that the buyer paid too much...

1 out of 5 stars Boy, what a disappointment THAT was........2003-06-05

Here I thought I was getting a book having something to do with coffee, all I got was a militant greenie screed against any business bigger than a lemonade stand.

Coffee makes rare and infrequent appearances in this book, which was written to reveal the evils of colonialism, how terrible slavery was, how underpaid Third World workers are, how awful America is in just about every way possible and to harrangue readers with straight doctrinaire party-line anti-business anti-WTO liberal international geopolitics. Coffee's just a stage prop for the authors' political rantings.

The authors clearly know nothing about coffee itself apart from the geopolitical ramifications of its trade as a commodity, what there is in the book pertaining to actual coffee is perfunctory, sketchy and cribbed from far better books.

Even on the book's real subject, which is to serve as a tract for liberal free-trade politics they can't get their facts straight. They mindlessly repeat the canards about Starbucks "imperialism" and how they're driving all independent shops out of business. Bushwa. Every study that's been done shows that wherever there's a Starbucks established, local coffee shops thrive and business for everyone goes up.

If you're into reading in-house literature for the free trade movement this book won't challenge your prejudices. But if you want to know something about coffee you won't learn it here.
