Product Description

Jack Weyland made his debut as a master story teller in the New Era magazine. Since that time he has written dozens of stories for young people. His ability to bring his characters to life and to relate real-life situations to the reader has made Brother Weyland one of the most polupar LDS story tellers of today. The stories in this volume have been previously published in the New Era magazine, and are reproduced here with their permission. Brother Weyland's other books - Punch and Cookies Forever, Charly, Sam, and The Reunion - have been extremely well received by young and old alike. The original short-story version of Charly is reprinted herein. In each story the characters become you and your friends. Each incident becomes very real. And each conclusion makes you a better person and leaves you with a stronger testimony of the gospel. You'll laugh, you'll cry, but once you begin reading First Day of Forever, you'll find your reading to be a pleasurable experience you'll never want to finish!

I loved "charly" and this is my all time favorite mormon writer. It was a great read! Some other great reads and advice on dating and youth, would "300 Questions Every LDS Couple Should Ask Before Marriage" by Alder... and of course John Bytheway.

4 out of 5 stars Review of First Day of Forever.......2001-11-16

This is a book composed of short stories. Each of these stories is unique in their own way. Only similar thing between stories is they each involve a boy and a girl and falling in love.
Each story shows some problem the couple has. Such as money, parents, or one of them are attached to someone else. It shows how couples have tiring times and hard ships, but there are the few couples who have it easy, there are no problems every thing is right. Each of these stories has an interesting and exiting way they work out. For instance the author gives the details of the guy picking up the girl stopping ever so often to recap back to something they learned in their childhood. As they go on with the date it stops again a talk of him learning how to treat a girl on a date and his disaster of taking a girl to a burger joint for the prom. As it returns to them getting seated at the restaurant they recap to her past of her friend telling her she was pregnant, and asking for advice if she should have abortion or not. As their date concludes it has just gone through some tiring parts of each person's life and how their date shows how they had learned from that and changed. Each of these stories were well written, in so much that it was as if he placed himself in the shoes of a young college couple fully relating to couples today. So this book can help and inspire couples to do right.
This book has a standard of how well it is written. Almost just like the charters have a standard for their future husband or wife. I think his high standard is to reach the children and young people of today. He might do this to show them there are people who fall in love without having a baby first and they fall in love sometimes when times are hard and they might be low on money. So instead of giving up they find any possible way to save money so they could afford their wedding.96
I personally would love someone who would go that far to find money so we could be married. But, even though each story is a enchanting love tale that relates to the youth it also relates to the youth so much that he uses some of the youths slang, this turns out to be good but also bad at the same time. It is good because it makes the story more realistic and the more realistic it is the more youth are able to relate it to their lives. But it is written so the youth can under stand it. A few parts could confuse some one who is older or even some youth or all youth. They parts are some of the talk where they person is talking to someone and explains something of a rumor and who they heard if from. For intense, Mary told me, who heard it from Johnny, who heard it from Sue, who heard it from Billy...and on. A gossip chain was explained a few times in this book, but if you were reading as fast as I was you would be stopped and puzzled, then go and reread that section over again. Because I was so interested with the small story I was reading fast and when I got there it slowed my reading down, I also had to read over it a couple times to under stand it. But I was so interested in the story it was a small nuisance I over looked. I also wish each story would go on. He stop each one to make your own idea of what their wedding looked like but personally like it when the author ends it that way you see what he had in mind.
Other than a few confusing parts this story is ver intriguing and captivating, each small tale you read it is harder and harder to put the book down. You will want to read it till it's over than read it again. This book is great and promotes kids to be careful and not do things you will regret, such as getting pregnant in high school. As one of the girls in the book her friend's life was ruined because she had gotten pregnant in high school. So this book will inspire youth to do right and think about their decisions. This is a book you must read.

5 out of 5 stars This book contains many wonderful stories for youth........1998-10-16

I realy enjoyed reading the stories in this book. I would recomend this book to and LDS youth, who has questions about dating, friends, or just about life. This book of short stories gives many different ideas and perspectives about dating. It also deals with just everyday problems of making friends and keeping them.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-04-06

My son's name is Liam so he LOVED reading about Liam the Leprechaun. It kept his interest and the illustrations were great. We read this book several times a night for days!

4 out of 5 stars Cute Story!.......2007-03-19

Ivan Robertson writes a delightful yarn about Irish customs and folklore. The story mentions Gaelic, the oldest language in Ireland, the oak club called a shillelagh, and the importance of the three-leaf clover. The 24-page book is recommended for children 3 to 7 years, which I think is appropriate for the age group. The text is easy to read, and doesn't bite off more than it can chew like many works attempt to do.

Jack and the Leprechaun is illustrated in watercolor, which is bright and cheerful and bursting with details. One could literally spend an hour looking at all the fine points painted into the scenes. The only inharmonious feature of the book is Katy Bratun's version of the Irish flag. The Irish flag is green, white, and orange not orange, white, and orange. Most readers won't notice such minutia, but it is curious with all the research required for this work, the illustrator got it wrong. I only spotted it because I have a bit of Irish in me.

My son, William, is currently into leprechauns, and it's no wonder with his beautiful red hair, and traditional name. He's taking a liking to Jack and the Leprechaun I think mostly because Liam is short for William, and everybody knows leprechauns have red hair. Somehow at five, I think it's okay to identify with the fairies even though their fabled creatures. Had I known when I purchased this book that there were so many well-written leprechaun stories, I surely would have settled on another. Although, considering the economical price, it's hard to be critical.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Wee Book for St. Patrick's Day........2006-05-13

There is no excuse for not buying this book if you are looking for a way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with your child. The paperback is very inexpensive and as such one might think it doesn't have much to offer but it does.

Ivan Robertson managed to write a cute story of a leprechaun while packing a lot of Irish culture and history into this little book. For instance we learn about the date and type of celebration one has in Ireland, what a shillelagh (shaw lay lee) is, what "Cead mile failte" (cade meela fall-cha) expresses, that Gaelic is their oldest language, why shamrocks are important, that green is the national color of Ireland, soda bread is traditional, and "Danny Boy" is a song special to the Country.

Katy Braun's illustrations are fun, festive, and green. This is the best St. Patrick's day book I have found so far for my wee lass.

4 out of 5 stars Jack and the Leprechaun review.......2006-03-31

This is a cute inexpensive St. Patrick's Day book. Jack helps his cousin Sean, but also looks for Liam the Leprechaun. M

4 out of 5 stars Fun for St. Patrick's Day.......2006-03-24

Read this to a first grade class. Lots of sights of how St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in Ireland: parade, special food, a family gathering. The children liked the added feature that it was a mystery to guess what the mice received at the end of the book.

Book Description

Saints are not supermen or superwomen, people with some extra spiritual oomph that the rest of us lack. The life of a saint is simply one that is fully oriented toward God, and this life is attainable for everyone. In How to Become a Saint, Jack Bernard explains that true holiness is not the special calling of a few, but the will of God for all people. In it, he offers vision, encouragement, and practical disciplines for pursuing such a life of faith. Rather than advocating just trying harder to become a better person or simply accepting an ''anything goes'' attitude of Christian spirituality, Bernard roots his writings in the church, encouraging disciples to pursue holiness within a community of believers instead of a ''me and God'' view of personal spirituality. With a pastoral heart and the wisdom that comes from persevering through many years of spiritual struggle, Jack Bernard seeks to bring hope to serious disciples that sainthood is not only possible but is God's desire and intention for all believers.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for dedicated Christians seeking to better understand and embody their faith........2007-06-09

Written by Christian missionary Jack Bernard (1942-2002), How to Become a Saint: A Beginner's Guide is a simple guide for anyone who seeks to become closer to God and Jesus Christ through embarking upon the long road to sainthood. How to Become a Saint denounces the myth that sainthood is an anomaly, only for a few individuals with superhuman religious zeal. Chapters discuss sainthood defined as undividedness toward God; the obedience that comes from faith; the importance of perseverance; true versus false mysticism; and much more. "As a proper grasp of grace leads to obedience, knowing we are predestined leads to determined effort at faithfulness. You are not on your own with the promise of a reward at the end if only you can gut it out. What Jesus said to his first disciples he still says to you 'And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age' (Matt. 28:20)". Highly recommended for dedicated Christians seeking to better understand and embody their faith.

4 out of 5 stars The Many Views of St. Anthony.......2005-02-20

Whether you know St. Anthony as the finder of lost objects, the patron of mariners, or some other title, and whether your favorite image has Anthony with a lily, the child Jesus, a book, or all three, your vision will probably broaden after reading this little book. Each of several authors focuses on a different aspect of Anthony's life and legend. The final chapters on praying to St. Anthony are especially useful in answering questions about praying "to" a saint and praying "for" something specific. The novena to St. Anthony contains traditional prayers and passages from his sermons followed by reflections.

5 out of 5 stars Get to know and love this "Saint of the People".......2005-02-15

Many Catholics I know reflexively offer a silent prayer to St. Anthony upon losing their car keys, wallet, or any other item of significance, but many don't know why it's St. Anthony to whom they pray.

In this newly updated and expanded version of a popular booklet, readers are treated to a wonderful introduction to St. Anthony of Padua, his life, and the devotions and legends surrounding him. Along with sharing his inspirational biography, the contributors to the book examine the details behind many popular devotions and rituals related to this special Franciscan.

Including but moving beyond turning to St. Anthony to aid with finding lost items, the book offers several wonderful prayers of intercession as well as a nine day novena. The book's final chapter includes helpful information on shrines devoted to St. Anthony.

Product Description

"The book is a revelation...because I never knew all the details, all the people and the strategies that went into the making of the movie Saint Jack...I have discovered how this excellent movie was created. And what I had thought was a lost world is still accessible – I enjoyed revisiting it in this book (Kinda Hot: The Making of Saint Jack in Singapore).” - Paul Theroux, author of Saint Jack

Kinda Hot: The Making of Saint Jack in Singapore reveals, for the first time, the extraordinary story behind the making of Saint Jack (1979), the only American film to be entirely shot on location in Singapore. Filmed in secret, it was subsequently banned by the authorities.

Adapting Paul Theroux’s celebrated novel about pimps and prostitutes in the Lion City, a local, amateur cast and crew worked right alongside brilliant film-making talents gathered from all over the world.

The director was Peter Bogdanovich, one-time Hollywood golden-boy whose career was in decline. The star was Ben Gazzara, a charismatic method actor. They immersed themselves into the world of brothels in the name of ‘research’.

The film was made on the run, with the cast and crew improvising wildly, chaotically capturing the last vestiges of Singapore’s famous colonial and seedy past, all the time telling the authorities they were shooting a romance called Jack Of Hearts.

Author Ben Slater has tracked down everyone from chief crew members and lead actors to the humblest extras, in order to tell the gripping, funny and poignant tale of what happened when Saint Jack came to Singapore for six months in 1978.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good behind-the-scenes of an overlooked classic........2007-01-06

SAINT JACK is not one of cinema's better-known films, but it's one of Peter Bogdanovich's best as a director. It's based upon the first novel by Paul Theroux about the up and downs of an American hustler in Singapore during the early and mid-Seventies, and this behind-the-scenes account by Ben Slater is a good one for those who've seen it. The recollections of the cast and crew are interesting, but what's particularly striking is that everyone says that this film, apart from its story, also showed Singapore at the end of an era, before the colonial-style houses and neighborhoods were demolished and modern office buildings rose in their place. Whether that change in the landscape is good or bad is still debated, but that it was able to be recorded before it disappeared probably is a good thing. The usual hijinx that go into putting a film together are recalled with gusto by all involved.

On it's own merits the book is a 5-star, but it's unfortunate that you'll probably never see SAINT JACK unless you take out a second mortgage to get the now out-of-print "Roger Corman Series" DVD of it. To give you an idea of what little regard is given to the film by its distributors, the print used for the DVD has scratches all over it and the mastering of the sound is atrocious, but the film still holds up nicely and Ben Gazzara's star turn in the title role is fantastic. See it if you can.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the making of Saint Jack.......2006-10-12

An eccentric project, but then, so was SAINT JACK. Anyone interested in Peter Bogdanovich, Singapore, films shot under unusual circumstances in unique locales, nostalgic reveries for a time long past, or the movie SAINT JACK itself, for that matter, should find this book a compelling read.

I came at it from the Bogdanovich angle; this and THEY ALL LAUGHED, the other film he shot with Robby Muller in much the same style (but in NYC) are my two favorite films by him and two of my favorite films of all time, so while I never saw this coming, I ordered it immediately upon stumbling upon it. Well worth a look if you think you might be interested in it...

4 out of 5 stars Best Loved LDS Talks.......2005-09-17

Compiling a book of talks to fit many people is a difficult and challenging task. The individuals who compiled "Best Loved Talks of the LDS People" did a fairly good job.

There are 50 talks of past and present LDS Church Leaders, addressing 25 different topics. The book is arranged topically, so you can read all of the talks together that focus on adversity, etc. Some of the talks will be very familiar to LDS readers, and others are more obscure and come from places such as Journal of Discourses.

I would recommend this book for any members of the LDS Church who want a book that contains a number of talks about basic LDS doctrines. The doctrines are BASIC, so if you are looking to go indepth into this religion, this may only give you a preliminary taste.

For those who are not members, there is no reason why you couldn't read this book. However, I don't know if this is the most helpful book for understanding the LDS religion because it will seem fragmented because each talk is only 10-15 pages. There may be more efficient ways to learn more.

I give this four stars because it had some great talks in the book. However, I wonder with access to the internet how many can be found on the internet rather than in the book. Also, I think they may have favored more obscure talks instead of others that may have been just as warranted.

    Book Description

    The essential goodness of creation

What if everyone's favorite saint were to step out of the world of history and legend, break free from his statue-like pose at the edge of the birdbath, and visit modern-day San Francisco? Why, he'd have an adventure, of course! When St. Francis comes to visit, there to greet him are Johnny and his dog, Sunpatch, who become the saint's personal tour guides through the city named after him. St. Francis blesses the animals of Golden Gate Park, visits landmarks, and even rides the famous cable cars. Along the way, he embraces everyone in that vibrant multicultural city as brothers and sisters with the same loving Father.

This contemporary approach to Francis makes him fresh and meaningful to today's readers. The book celebrates all of creation's diversity as part of the same family and shows how Francis approached creation with a deep spirit of joy. Imbued with Franciscan spirituality throughout, the book also gently introduces the idea that Jesus' incarnation gives value to all humans, animals, and the entire created world.

Illustrated in a bright and cheerful palette, this is perfect reading for all children aged four to eight, animal lovers of all ages, Franciscans and lay Franciscans, devotees of Francis, parents and grandparents, grade school teachers, catechists, school and public libraries, veterinarians, gift buyers, and anyone who's ever lived in, visited, or wanted to see San Francisco.

5 out of 5 stars St. Francis Reveals God's Love of Creation.......2001-06-30

Jack Wintz O.F.M., an award-winning journalist and editor of St. Anthony Messenger, has captured the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi in St. Francis in San Francisco recently published by Paulist Press. The book focuses on the 4-8 year old age group but, as classic children's literature so often does, St. Francis in San Francisco possesses a depth of meaning that adults will ponder and appreciate. St. Francis steps from history into modern day San Francisco, the city named for him. He encounters Johnny Thompson and Sunpatch, his dog. Sunpatch becomes the narrator of the story, providing readers with a view of life from the animal kingdom. The group commences on a jaunt through Golden Gate Park. Later they visit Mission Dolores, the birthplace of San Francisco. A cable car ride provides excitement. Their contemporary activities parallel stories of St. Francis' life in the thirteenth century: St. Francis feeding the wildlife in the park, mirrors his desire to spread food for the birds along the roads of Assisi, Italy, at Christmastime eight centuries ago. The little group's outward journey into San Francisco is accompanied by an inward tour of values. St. Francis of Assisi is a saint treasured by people of all religions. The reasons for his universal respect are highlighted as St. Francis praises the beauty of creation and the need for humans to revere and care for it. Coupled with this is the powerful message of God's love for all of creation. A bit of history of the founding of the California missions, a prayer for the American Indians who inhabited San Francisco before the arrival of the missionaries, and an exciting cable car ride with a group of fellow passengers who could be from anywhere on the globe round out a book that will be read many times to and by the young and the young at heart. Father Wintz is the author of Lights: Revelations of God's Goodness, an inspirational book in which he describes "moments of light" in everyday life which will inspire those searching for God. His reporting has taken him from interviewing such Hollywood celebrities as Gene Kelly, Bob Newhart and Brooke Shields to travels around the world -- Berlin, Jerusalem, Hiroshima, Viet Nam --to write on social issues. Artist Kathy Baron illustrates Father Wintz's work with a trio of delightful characters accompanied by a menagerie of God's creatures-buffalo, quail, opossums, raccoons, snakes, ducks, fox, a pony, hummingbirds, rabbits to name a few. A tiny mouse pops up in surprising places. San Franciscoscapes grace some of the full page illustrations. St. Francis in San Francisco has been a delightful book to share with my granddaughter as we explore God's love for all creation. It makes a great gift for a child, a library, a lover of God's creation and any admirer of St. Francis of Assisi.

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed To Inspire You!.......2005-05-21

This book is brimming with thought-provoking messages that inspire the reader to build their testimony by going straight to the scriptures. Jack Christianson and Doug Bassett are a winning combination as they join forces to remind readers to be 'believing and behaving' Latter-day Saints, not just those who go through the motions. It's a wake-up call of why we're here, and what this life is all about. A sure-fire read for anyone who has gotten a little too comfortable with their testimony, and needs a fresh charge of their spiritual batteries. Excellent reading! The authors use scripture, counsel from prophets, and motivating stories to bring home the message of the power of the Book of Mormon, and how to use that power in our lives. Two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Quick read, highly recommended for expats and tourists.......2005-08-29

Theroux is a well-traveled, workmanlike writer with a fondness for the raffish and louche, apt to find in it a premature redemption in order to wind things up in a snappy Yank fashion. To his credit younger and shallower readers think he has a Bad Attitude, which is one of the names under which Moral Seriousness goes these days.

Saint Jack's original may be found throughout the formerly Far East, on many a bar-stool and in many an AA meeting. The hero of this novel is undistinguished by wealth or fame and is instead of the so-called Greatest Generation, who served in WWII.

Writers of the immediate postwar like Bellow celebrated the American "logistical tail", which was extensive and included any number of typists; Tommy Wilhelm in Seize the Day, for example, flew a desk.

This may have been for the writer a labor-saving device. Having the character serve in a rifle platoon would mean the writer would have to deal with the large issue of how the combat affected the hero.

As the reader, you should realize that Saint Jack is a creature of the 1970s and a Singapore that is, as the guy below me in the postings here says, no more. He dates in other words from an era when a middle-aged and undistinguished guy could carry a message, the twilight of the Common Man as opposed to the trooping masses, destined, if they know what's good for them, only for approved lifestyles, dragging the kids to Disneyland, or Camp Snoopy in Sha Tin, their hopes for a better world downsized permanently.

Thanks to the guy below me for the suggestion of Theroux's novel Kowloon Tong. I shall definitely give it a read.

One great benefit from reading Saint Jack was a number of jokes, wheezers and gaspers popular twenty years ago in the saloon bar of the Peninsula or Raffle's after the women had left the room, to conspire.

5 out of 5 stars Great Novel of Singapore.......2002-08-06

Fine, absorbing literary novel follows the exploits of expatriate American stuck in Singapore because he has neither the ability nor the luck to go anywhere else. The novel has a nice atmosphere which reminded me of Graham Greene, Saul Bellow and Gore Vidal, and effectively evoked the sleazy underbelly of Singapore that still exists in that now outwardly squeaky-clean, but sinister city-state. I read this book while living in S'pore and was surprised how many attitudes and actions of the eastern and western characters were reminded me of the Singapore of today. So I felt the book worked in two ways, as a great, entertaining read for anyone interested in just a plain good book, and also as a fine evocation of the eternal aspects of Singapore. Saint Jack was also filmed - the film version is interesting because it captured the old colonial look of S'pore before the current regime of Harry Lee Kuan Yew tore most of it down, replacing it with souless concrete tower blocks. Yet the sleazy atmosphere remains, and comes out at night especially. Theroux's Hong Kong novel, *Kowloon Tong,* captures perfectly that other Far Eastern city state at the time of the 1997 Handover (I was living in HK at the time) and is also recommended, both as a fine read and as a fine description of the place. For a good non-fiction account of Singapore, try Stan Sesser's *The Lands of Charm and Cruelty,* with a great essay on S'pore and "the fear that even the best educated Singaporeans feel towards their government."

5 out of 5 stars Early Theroux That Holds Up Nicely.......2002-06-13

Below his somewhat crusty exterior, Jack Flowers cares - sometimes deeply - about the "flotsam and jetsam" he bumps up against - on the streets, in the bar, in his brothel. He really won't show it ... nor, perhaps, will he even admit it to himself ... but he does. And he has "all the time in the world" to do so, in his own backhanded way.

Paul Theroux cut some of his teeth on this early novel, and it holds up remarkably well on second reading. Somewhat acerbic, sometimes touching, "Saint Jack" is a true pleasure.

    5 out of 5 stars expat life.......2000-01-29

Sure, lots of authors have done their take on the expat lifestyle, but few have done it better than Mr. Theroux has in St. Jack. This is a smart, deceptively simple take on the 'allure' of life abroad. A great book, even if you've traveled no farther than your mailbox; though, for those who have, the desriptions of people living abroad not so much because they want to---but because they're afraid to go home--- are right on the mark.

I loved this book - it captures a spirit that has gone far away in the sterile atmosphere that surrounds that tiny island. Read this book!
