came quickly enough... book wasn't in the greatest shape, but it wasn't described to be either- so it was a fair deal

5 out of 5 stars Flight Magic.......2007-07-16

This book can be considered a magical addition to the Flight comics series. As you open the book its as if you are taken to a whole new world in which you are lifted up off your feet over the world and to new hights of imagination.

4 out of 5 stars NICE read, EXCEPT for..........2007-07-04

Hats off to the many great stories by the many great artists in this book. There are indeed many talented people still roaming this planet! EXCEPT for the few artists who obviously paid someone or had a strong connection w/ an Image Comics employee to get their pitiful stories into Flight, Vol. 2.

Those that left a sour lingering taste in my mouth are... Don Hertzfeldt's stick figures accompanied by a very weak attempt at a story. Calling Hertzfeldt's work 'amateurish' would be very kind indeed. Next we have Hope Larson's 'Weather Vain'. All I can say is, "PURE GARBAGE!" What gives? Put your obvious illustrative talents to better use. This junk was immediately followed by Becky Cloonan's 'Heads Up'. Same advice that I gave to Ms. Larson applies here. What a waste of seventeen pages and the editor/publisher had the nerve to put these stories back to back. WOW!

Lastly, who wants to try and explain to me what was going on in Matthew Woodson's 'Tendergrass'? BIZARRE to say the least. Oh well, maybe it's just me.

Continued success to those talented artists, story writers, letterers and color artists whose work belonged in this wonderful and reccommended read. Cheers!!

5 out of 5 stars Flight 2 review.......2007-02-09

When my copies (I got 2&3) arrived, the first thing I noticed was the sheer size of the volumes. They are much thicker than I expected, but then again it is chock full of images. The short stories in this run the gamut when it comes to styles and tone. I really enjoyed first just scanning through the volume just LOOKing at the imagery. Once I sat down to read the stories, I really couldn't stop. Well, I could have, but I didn't really want to. Each story has a flavor, a texture, and you can't quite help but enjoy them and want more. As for the art created for this volume- by variety and quality, they're inspiring. I'm glad I got at least two volumes at once. I would recommend this book!

These books are great! These comics have the greatest comic art I have seen and many of them have very intellectual meanings.

Book Description

The best-selling author of multiple award-winning books returns with his first novel in ten years, a powerful, fast and timely story of a troubled foster teenager — a boy who is not a “legal” Indian because he was never claimed by his father — who learns the true meaning of terror. About to commit a devastating act, the young man finds himself shot back through time on a shocking sojourn through moments of violence in American history. He resurfaces in the form of an FBI agent during the civil rights era, inhabits the body of an Indian child during the battle at Little Big Horn, and then rides with an Indian tracker in the 19th Century before materializing as an airline pilot jetting through the skies today. When finally, blessedly, our young warrior comes to rest again in his own contemporary body, he is mightily transformed by all he’s seen. This is Sherman Alexie at his most brilliant — making us laugh while breaking our hearts. Simultaneously wrenching and deeply humorous, wholly contemporary yet steeped in American history, Flight is irrepressible, fearless, and again, groundbreaking Alexie.

5 out of 5 stars Alexie Does It.......2007-10-10

I've been reading Alexie's work lately and reading FLIGHT has lead me to be even more enthusiastic about his writing. His words suck you into the emotion of the main character, Zits, and takes you with him on his journey to find his identity as a foster, 21st century Indian boy. As a pre-service English teacher, I thought of how this book would be responded to in a high school classroom. Despite some of the provocative language (which really is a minute factor) used in certain situations, this is a great text to expose to high school students with its ability to raise topics for discussion and controversial issues that expand further than just adolescent identity.
A big aspect of FLIGHT is the idea of the 21st century Indian which has been a talked about issue recently. There are so may subjects and controversies packed into Alexie's book that it's possible to find a deeper meaning within each one of his words. I highly recommend this text to any high school student or adult.

4 out of 5 stars Despite some turbulence, it is well worth the flight........2007-10-10

Sherman Alexie's Flight reminds us all that we seek love and need love. The novel's protagonist, "Zits" is a wayward teenager who is victimized by the foster-care system and as a result wrestles with shame, alienation and self. Zits draws the reader in as he narrates this tale with a matter-of-fact tone and a sardonic sense of humor that only a teenager of his circumstance could own. After another one of Zit's attempts at running away, the altruistic Officer Dave catches him; Officer Dave is Zits only true friend. In describing Dave, Zits claims, "the wounded always recognize the wounded. We can smell each other." These open wounds are the catalysts that turn a routine visit to kid jail into something more sinister; it is on this visit, that the susceptible Zits comes under the spell of another Juvenile Delinquent named "Justice" and decides to become his brother in arms. While faced with a critical decision, initiated by the charismatic Justice, Zits's conscience soars-literally. We find our selves taken along for the ride as Zits snatches bodies and thrusts us into a series of alternate consciousness. We become an FBI agent, an Indian boy, an Indian tracker, an adulterous man caught with his paramour and even Zits's own father. Aside from gripping action, all this body snatching serves a purpose; these characters act as vehicles for Zits to come to terms with his dubious and heart breaking past. If you want to know whether or not Zits follows Justice's flawed and mad reasoning to his own death, read this novel! Although getting to the destination is riddled with turbulence, it is well worth the flight.

5 out of 5 stars A typical boy in an untypical world..........2007-10-10

This is how Alexie brings us in! He introduces us to a character that we are already familiar with no matter how old we are - the typical troubled, "bad boy" teen. Through the first few chapters, we begin with an, "Ah, I know this boy" attitude. Then, his "typical" bad boy life changes. He goes places none of us have before. But, we still want to follow him because we "know" him, or at least someone like him. On the surface, the entire novel seems like a young teenage boy and his unexpected journeys through time. However, we can look so much deeper than that. It seems, through his time travel, Zits is making commentary on real world and societal issues and is not afraid to say it. In the beggining, he uses the teenage language and laid back "I don't care" attitude to introduce concepts of murder, culture, citizenship, identity, friendship, etc. We may almost pass him off as a troubled teen with an attitude problem. However, his extreme detail and analysis of his time travel proves to us that in every time and place in the world there are major contradictions between what we are told/taught and what actually happens and how people actually feel.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I do feel that adolescents might have trouble with it. As a college student reading it for school, I had trouble stopping to jot down notes or putting the book down. In the begining, when I would leave the book, I felt like I had no idea what was going on. I could make new predictions every other chapter as to if this person really was Zits, if it was a dream, time travels, a nightmare, etc. and sometimes my predictions were way off. Just when I thought I knew what was happening I realized I didn't. Although predicting and repredicting was fun for me, I think it may cause the "anti-reading" adolescent student trouble. I enjoy being confused and I enjoy every twist and turn, but I'm not sure a majority of adolescents would. However, because of the literary beauty, terrific writing, great story and underlying commentary, I believe trying to get adolescents to read this novel is definitely worth a shot!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Book that Goes Against the Grain.......2007-10-10

What can't there be said about this book? If you want a book that sugar-coats language and hides hard-hitting issues, do not pick up "Flight" by, Sherman Alexie. However, if you enjoy reading real teen issues and are not resistant to language, (even profanities) then this book is definitely for you.

Alexie does a fantastic job in creating a teen who faces many problems that many teenagers today can relate to while also using language that many teens are accustomed to. The character "Zits" is the poster child for everything that can go wrong for a teenager in today's world while still maintaining an amazing sense of humor. His telling of the story and constant interruption of thoughts has readers literally "laughing out loud."

Open-minded adults and kids everywhere will most definitely enjoy this book!

4 out of 5 stars "We're all the same people. And we are all falling." .......2007-10-10

"Call me Zits. Everybody calls me Zits...My real name isn't important." From the first few lines of Sherman Alexie's Flight, the reader is aware that this young adolescent struggles from a lack of self-worth. This adolescent boy of mixed blood (American and Indian)presents a bit of his past to the reader within the first chapter of the novel. Having lived with 20 foster families by age 15, he forces the reader to feel pity for him, regardless of his negative behavior. I found myself granting clemency for his actions due to his past experiences.
This boy is lonely, disappointed, scared, angry, unsure and longs to be loved. It is not until he takes "flight" on this journey that his life changes.
Zits represents and speaks to every adolescent who struggles with stereotypes, self identity, cultural identity, family and love for self. Where the novel is bit graphic and the language a bit vulgar, it is still a novel I would teach in a secondary classroom. The way Catcher in the Rye related to students years ago, Flight relates to students of today.
Flight embodies so many themes, that every English teacher desires to touch upon. A must read for everyone!

4 out of 5 stars Good, especially for ASOIAF fans.......2007-09-06

I'd rather give it 4.5 stars, but that's not an option. As a fan of the series, it's definitely worth it just to get a visual of what you're reading. The info and quotes are great for reliving the stories, but there are reasons it didn't get a full 5/5 score.

-I've seen a lot of art online that is far better and relevant than some of the pieces I've seen in this art book.

Examples of this would be how few pictures there are of important characters as opposed to pictures of characters who are close to irrelevent to any of the plot points. A specific example of this is the giant picture, though magnificent, of Rosaline Frey. If you've read the books you probably know why I scratch my head at that pic.

-Some of the art is suspect. I know GRRM had to approve much of the art if not all of it, but some of the pieces I feel he must not have really looked at. A pic of Brienne looks like a ten year old drew it (no offense to the artist).

-A couple of the pics purportedly depict sections of the story that I don't recognize. One is a pic of Dorne while another is a pic of just some random girl laying in a bed with a generic title. In other words, I'm not sure if these pieces of art were intended for GRRM's story or not, or maybe the artists just hadn't read the books.

That said, 90% of the material is great. I've owned it less than a year and I've gone through it a number of times. My cousin, who is also a fan, has to look through it everytime he comes down. It's one of the first things he asks to see when he comes through the door, actually.

I can't wait for a second book of art, to be honest.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the avid fan........2007-06-05

If you are a loyal fan to the Ice and Fire series, than you will enjoy this collection.
A high pecentage of the art was from the Game of Thrones CCG game, so if you have the playing cards, you wont find a whole lot new here. I have seen most of the art online at different fan and artists websites, but to have them all in one format that you can look at anytime is worth the price to me.
It is interesting to see the different ways people picture the characters. Some were spot on to what I imagined and some where not even close to what I picture. Either way, it is great reference material and the artwork is fabulous weather your a fan or not.

4 out of 5 stars For lovers of Sonf of Ice and Fire.......2007-05-14

Very beautiful and well-done pictures based in SoI&F's characters. Also include descriptions and comments.
An item so necessary for G.R.R.Martin fans

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-04-13

I bought this book after reading the Westeros books of GRRM and I was greatly surprised and enthusiastic about the art depicting characters from the series. Some of the art was breathtaking and just pure brilliance.

If you were needing a visual reference to some of the names, faces, and places of Westeros, this is defnitely a book to pick up.

3 out of 5 stars Only OK........2007-04-04

I fast became a big fan of George RR Martin's epic book series, and once i had gotten through the first few books i sought out this compendium of artwork. There are some decent renderings, such as a painting of Robert Baratheon battling Rheagar Targaryen on the Trident, but overall i found much of the art a little amatuerish - not on the level that you might find in one of the many "art of" book for films. Still if you are a Martin fan, you might want to check it out.

5 out of 5 stars a serial killer.......2007-09-18

Several weeks ago, I picked up a Harry Bosch novel in a local book store. Since then I have ordered 12 other of the series from Amazon. I only have three left to read. Each novel stands alone, but if you read the series in order, it's a lot more fun. Great detectuve stories by a very readable author.

Harry Bosch is now a 'friend'. When I needed relief from my busy life - I
escaped by reading his cases. I am ordering more Michael Connelly books!!

5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2006-08-28

After reading the "Dark Tower" series, twice, I was looking for another series for my reading time. I never had read any kind of mystery/crime/police type novels before. I kind of feel like I started with the best which is kind of depressing, I will always compare anything else in this genre to Harry Bosch!

I love Harry! Yea he has an attitude, and you would too if you were lugging the steamer trunk of baggae he does.

This book is essentially 4-6 of the Harry Bosch run. Worth the time and money!

4 out of 5 stars Well up to his high standard.......2006-03-10

As I write this I have only read book #1, The Last Coyote and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is probably best, I think, to read the Bosch novels in sequence; then you may appreciate better the developing plots which sometimes refer back to previous events. But each novel can, of course, be enjoyed on its own.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-09-09

What amazed me was the delivery. It came 3 days after I ordered it online. Is it a great product? If you're a tintin fan and don't have all the collections, this is a good one. I bought the all 7 volumes at once. My childhood memories live on.

3 out of 5 stars There is a reason they put these three together.......2007-05-15

It's funny how you can see Herge's style changes over time and yet stays the same. The Picaros is a long way from The Blue Lotus. While there three are not my favorites, they round out the TinTin collection. My [...] has enjoyed Flight 714 more than the other two. I give this 3 stars because his later work just seems like a weaker outing than his earlier work...Red Rackham's Treasure...Destination Moon.

5 out of 5 stars Great stories, well executed.......2007-01-14

I grew up with Tintin books, and my kids are now at an age where they are beyond "See Spot Run" but don't always have the patience for a full-length book. The stories are always great, and the research is meticulous. Most of the story subjects were highly topical at the time, and reading the books regularly provide history refresher.

"The Castafiore Emerald", though it is probably the least "adventurous" of the Tintin books, in my view has the most complex story structure, with a number of plots weaving into each other. A timeless classic.

Herge is no stranger to the esoteric story, but "Flight 714" is clearly the most extreme in this respect. Still, a good story, and an opportunity to deal with a perennial nemesis.

"Tintin and the Picaros" again revisits old territory and old friends like General Alcazar and his Latin American banana republic. This book prompted a long discussion on guerillas and insurgencies with my 8-year-old.

5 out of 5 stars Herge the Elder.......2006-12-18

Volume 7 of the "three in one" Tintin books has the last three completed adventures "The Castafiore Emerald" (1963), "Flight 714" (1968) and "Tintin and the Picaros" (1976). Herge was in his late fifties and sixties when he wrote them, and at times they do have that elder perspective about them. For instance, the elder Captain Haddock's thoughts and feelings seem to be the focus of these stories, while Tintin is more of a side character, investigating. As a kid, I liked "Flight 714", but I didn't find the other two as interesting. They're not like the older stories, but they are fine adventures in their own way.

"The Castafiore Emerald" is completely set on the grounds of Captain Haddock's Marlinspike Hall, and sees the poor Captain swamped by stress and frustrations as the opera singer Bianca Castafiore comes to stay...

"Flight 714" starts off like a standard Tintin action-adventure comic, but then goes all strange in the middle when criminals hijack Tintin's plane and takes him and his friends to a mysterious island...

"Tintin and the Picaros" is like a sequel of sorts to 1937's "The Broken Ear", and sees much of Tintin's investigative past catch up with him in the war torn South American country of "San Theodoros"...

Not the first ones to read for a newcomer (being the last three) but they're worth picking up, and these three in ones are sturdy, a convenient size and great value.

5 out of 5 stars A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage.......2006-09-09

Volume 7: The Castafiore Emerald (1963), Flight 714 for Sydney (1968), Tintin and the Picaros (1976). This is the last instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.

"Hergé influenced my work as much as Disney," said Andy Warhol. Tintin, hardly known in the USA, nevertheless makes his influence felt here, with Spielberg (in one episode, Haddock risks his life for his captain's cap) and Lichtenstein among his admirers. Among the reasons Tintin is not well-known in the USA is that certain minority sensibilities risk being offended. Some will argue that it's because Tintin is too sexless, though I doubt that's it. Tintin's somewhat bland, unassuming sense of duty propels him and the stories, while the cast of supporting characters give the series its wonderful colour, liveliness and effervescence. It is, thankfully, not a superhero comic, these reserving their appeal to male adolescents and collectors, and not graduating into durable art until efforts such as Alan Moore's superlative Watchmen burst onto the scene in 1986-87. It is also not a comic strip like the great Peanuts or Calvin and Hobbes: it is an adventure series. We would have to revisit Terry and the Pirates for something comparable, but even so, Tintin has acceded to the summit of its art form, its worldwide appeal unabated, while Terry and the Pirates and the other great adventure strips this side of the pond are all but forgotten.

Volume 7 begins with The Castafiore Emerald, where the artwork is almost psychotically draftsman-like, some would say even antiseptically so. But for me, it's the quintessence of Hergé's clean line style and the panels are glowingly beautiful. The wheelchair crash into the doctor's car is a great slapstick panel. There are a couple of departures from the Tintin adventure mode, the more obvious being that it is all set at the home base, Marlinspike. The other departure, a tour de force, is left to the reader who, if s/he doesn't get it then s/he doesn't get the story. Bianca Castafiore's domineering personality is shown in all its glory, with paparazzi infestations, colour television developments, gypsy settlements, prejudice, tabloids, roses, birds and of course, the Emerald.

Flight 714 for Sydney is a departure from the quintessentially clean line style and the artwork is a little more cluttered, but again, for me it works, for example by giving more detail to Haddock's rich store of expressions. The book came out the same year as Von Daniken's Chariots of Fire, but the story came out in serial form a couple of years earlier. Again, I don't want to give away the story, but we are treated to another great adventure involving Calculus' savate kick, a superbly detailed aircraft, a memorable scene blurring the lines between the good and the bad, a Pacific island, ancient sculptures, and what it all means - by the end of the story, you know and I know, but it remains a secret in Tintin's world.

The final complete volume (Hergé died before completing its successor, Tintin and Alph-Art, which is available in its uncompleted form) is Tintin and the Picaros, which brings us back to the Amazon, with Alcazar, the Arumbaya, and the clean line which has, however, thickened a tad too much for my tastes. In my opinion a weaker effort than the previous five, a bit of a let down. There is a sense that Hergé felt that this might be his final album and gave the Thom(p)sons a little too much dignity, maybe to make amends for the countless indignities they suffered in the past. Some panels and dialogue are stilted and the story isn't as tight and fluid as in its predecessors. There are still some ironies, such as the first and last panels. And we get to learn Haddock's first name.

Book Description

This full-color volume collects the best art from Fantasy Flight's acclaimed Call of Cthulhu collectible card game, as well as from 25 years of Chaosium's legendary line of Call of Cthulhu role-playing game products. In these pages are glimpses of the most terrible beings ever to exist, whose very names are spoken of in whispers, if at all: Mighty Cthulhu, Yog-Sothoth the Crawling Chaos Nyarlathotep and He Who Shall Not Be Named. Strange and alien races swarm here: the Fungi From Yuggoth, the star-headed Elder Things, the slithering Formless Spawn and awful chthonians. The Art of H.P. Lovecraft's The Cthulhu Mythos contains hundreds of full-color pieces of art, from fan favorites such as Patrick McEnvoy, Michael Komarck, Jean Tay, Thomas Denmark, John Gravato, Aaron Acevedo, James Ryman, Felicia Cano, Linda Bergkvist and dozens more. Once you see these blasphemous visions, you will never forget them.

4 out of 5 stars A Precise Approach.......2007-08-27

This is a clear and succinct collection of well-organized and presented art. Make no mistake. The printing quality and obvious layout work that has been demonstrated by this book is almost flawless; and well worthy of the tribute it is.

However, even in the knowledge that much of this art comes from a TCG, and in the face of obvious streamlining as far as direction and theme are concerned; some fans of the mythos, such as I, could easily find themselves alienated in the almost 'cartoony' quality of the art itself.

I will, however, give this four stars; as it clearly pulls across a great degree of scope; covering many more aspects of the Cthulhu mythos than i thought possible or likely. The sheer variety is impressive in it's own right.

A committed and beautifully presented artifact - even if not as dark, disturbing and violent as it could have been.

2 out of 5 stars Not what it SHOULD have been.......2007-05-15

Considering the increasing public awareness of HP Lovecraft and his infamous Mythos, I fully expected an 'art' book having a much wider variety of Cthulhu Mythos creatures represented as I had found in the Barlow's Guide to the Cthulhu Mythos (I think I may be a bit off on the title but I also think this book is out of print).
In any case, a suprising number of the prints offered are of normal humans, presumably characters in a Mythos role playing game (I'm basing this assumption on the credits given to each picture). The painting/drawings of the Mythos creatures range from the nicely done to the uninspired with the later being the most frequent. I really can't see myself recommending this book unless you happen across it in a 1/2 off bin.

3 out of 5 stars The Art of The Call of Cthulhu Collectible Card Game.......2007-05-02

When I first saw this on the bookshelf, I saw the title and thought the book would be a comprehensive collection of art inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. Since the publisher is Fantasy Flight Games, it comes as no surprise that there is ample art from the Call of Cthulhu collectible card game published by the selfsame company. The art is quite fine, but there is disappointment upon realizing that the art is almost exclusively from the card game, with a few images from game books of the makers of the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game, Chaosium. Other reviews have pointed out that since these games have created their own settings and characters and situations, many of the art pieces featured in the book actually have little to do with Lovecraft outside of being set in the 1920's, and it's true. The irony is that some mythos-specific art from the games were not included. Furthermore, since many of the illustrations were created to appear in an area smaller than a playing card, the reproductions can only be blown up to a certain size before the illusion is lost. That being said, there are a lot of paintings to look at since they can fit several to a page, and many are quite nice.

4 out of 5 stars It's scary good........2007-02-15

Having read a ton of H.P. Lovecraft and played 'Call of Cthulhu' ,the role-playing game, it was nice to see some of these horrors ghastly images put on paper. A great book to scare all these little mutants into bed for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A job only they can handle.......2007-08-22

John Byrne has gone on record saying that his heart was never really into "Alpha Flight", that they were basically created as a team that could successfully battle the X-Men. Despite all this, Byrne's run on AF (he did 28 issues total) are an example of his mastery of the form and yet another look at how much the comics medium has fallen since the 80s. There's never been another book like "Alpha Flight." The team had been created four years before the book came out, but Byrne was faced with the task of instilling each character with a personality and origin, which he painstakingly did, bit by bit.

Included here are the first 8 issues of the book presented in a nice new format. Some people have said the new format is a little too bright, but I think it works well and doesn't take away from the stories at all. We get the classic battle with Tundra, Snowbird's battle in a blizzard which has to be "seen" to get the full effect, the troubled twins - split-personality Aurora and gay Northstar - as well as the development of James Hudson's cyber helmet that started the whole mess. My only complaint is that there should have been more issues included because it will take us that much longer to get to my favorite part of Byrne's run: issues 18-28.

It's so much fun to revisit these characters and adventures again but those discovering them for the first time will have just as much fun. Thanks to all who finally put this book together.

    5 out of 5 stars Oh Canada!.......2007-07-26

During Chris Claremont and John Byrne's revolutionary run on Uncanny X-Men, the duo introduced Alpha Flight: Canada's premiere superhero team that has a connection to Wolverine. Byrne would write and draw Alpha Flight during it's original run, and thankfully, the same success he brought to X-Men and Fantastic Four translated here. Byrne's talent for team dynamics and dynamic action really helped Alpha Flight shine, as he gives heart and soul to characters like Vindicator, Sasquatch, Northstar, and Puck. Byrne's artwork is wonderful as always, but it's treatment of the characters as a whole that sets Alpha Flight apart from many of Marvel's typical secod-rate hero teams, and nearly propels them to the top. This, along with many appearances from familiar faces in the Marvel universe, make this first volume of Byrne's run on Alpha Flight worth picking up for new fans and old readers alike.

5 out of 5 stars John Byrne shows us his Canadian side.......2007-06-14

Alpha Flight has been through many iterations since it premiered years ago, but the orginal series (at least Byrne's run) is still the best. This volume collects the 1st 8 issues of the series, and what's good about it is that it isn't like many other comics that you'll read that bring together groups of superheroes. Basically, everyone on the team has some sort of issue, and Byrne crafts great back stories for each character.

The artwork is dead on, and it's a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Stan Lee Presents Canada's Greatest Super-Team: Alpha Flight.......2007-05-08

So reads the beginning caption to issue #3 in Byrne's unique, 28-issue stint with a distinctly Canadian team...
Quick: how many Canadian super-teams can you currently name off the top of your head? My guess is: not many. Credit Byrne with bringing Canada back into the mainstream in 1983 with Alpha Flight #1- the biggest selling comic of its day- 500,000 copies! While Byrne was born in England, he lived in Canada between the ages of 8 and 30 before moving to the States in 1980. Who better, then, to write & draw a distinctly Canadian team?

His most popular works may be X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Superman, but I *equally* love his lesser-known efforts: his 6+1-issue run on the Incredible Hulk (in '85-'86... where's the trade paperback???); his great '80s covers for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition; his distinctly Canadian Alpha Flight; and even his quirky & fun run on She-Hulk (which also deserves a new TPB!). And today, it's Alpha Flight that gets the spotlight again in this new & high-quality collection. It really contains: Issues 1-8; an '80s Marvel Age preview article; and even a few '80s entries from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe(!). Thankfully, Marvel treats Byrne's paperbacks right with a decent grade of paper, something the Distinguished Competition (Man of Steel maybe?) could learn a little something about.

While Byrne has gone on record as saying Alpha Flight never really gelled for him artistically or story-wise, I still think quite highly of it. Maybe the writing is at times a little stiff & forced, but this series still strikes me as being one of the most original *feeling* of all time. Even today, few titles manage to capture the overall grandeur of Canada while staying distinctly & wonderfully contemporary. John Byrne pulls it off!

It's no wonder Walt Simonson has called Byrne the 1st modern super-star of mainstream American comics (see his intro to Modern Masters, Vol. 7: John Byrne (Modern Masters)). Few artists/writers in the industry have had such a popular & long-lasting appeal! 5 Stars!

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Certainly not blown away..........2007-06-13

I don't mean to come down too hard on this original and beautifully done collection of comics, but I have to admit to being disappointed. After reading the glowing reviews on Amazon, I thought I was really in for a treat. I dived into this volume as soon as it arrived on my doorstep only to find myself wondering what all the hoop-la was about. Many of the stories contained in this anthology (especially the 6-7 crammed into the middle) do very little to inspire, and in fact left me with a rather bitter feeling. Some of the stories led me to a bored feeling that had me thinking of better ways to spend my time.

While I can appreciate the beauty of simplicity and enjoy the rather abstract message presented by some of the contributors, I felt like a number of the stories here took those concepts too far. Stories of girls flying kites and crazily (unintelligible) pointless confusions of maps do very little to kick-start the imagination or capture the attention. IMHO, about half of these stories could have been left out for an overall more pleasant experience.

Either my expectations were simply too high for this volume, or I'm a dullard who cannot recognize artistic talent when I see it, but this book certainly did not blow me away. However, I did enjoy a number of the stories within. Particularly the first and last few. Beautiful artwork and simple but gripping stories can be found here, but you'll have to look for them amid a choir of blandness.

Because it has even more raving reviews than this one, I'll probably check out Flight Volume 2, but if it doesn't impress me more than this one did, it'll be my last.

5 out of 5 stars Great art, great stories.......2007-01-07

I really liked most of the stories in this book, and it was cool how they all had different interpretations of a central theme.

    4 out of 5 stars Less Awesome.......2007-09-07

While I enjoyed this collection, it doesn't have as much depth as Flight #2. The imagery in general doesn't take you to a unique universe like really great comics should. Some of the writing is quite mundane which makes this collection seem like second string work. However, in a field ironically devoid of real creativity the stories are still some of the best to be seen. Perhaps the amazing level of Flight 2 was just too hard to sustain. Despite the general, everyday, autobiographical nature of many of these stories there are still enough gems that create their own unique world that I recommend this book to all serious admirers of the comic genre.

I love this one...and ordered a copy for myself after seeing it at the library. Unique, colorful, clever imagery and stories in comic form that are not to be missed. A real treat after a long day. I have not read issues 1 & 2 yet myself, but heard several times that this one is even better than both those prior editions.

    5 out of 5 stars A brilliant comics anthology.......2007-05-09

I was first attracted to Flight Vol. 1 because of the story by Kazu Kibuishi, who had done the very entertaining comic Daisy Kutter. As I began to read Vol. 1 I was astounded by the quality of each succeeding story. Most were terrific and even the few could be considered to be "clunkers" were actually interesting experiments that only partially failed for some reason or another. Amazingly enough Flights 2 and 3 were even better. I swear that there's not a bad story in the lot and I'm sure that the upcoming Flight 4 will continue this high level of quality. Cudos to Erik (Savage Dragon) Larsen for using his position as Image Comics publisher to get the first two entries published.
