Heaven by Randy Alcorn.......2007-10-10
I purchased this book because I wanted to learn more about Heaven. My husband died July 25, 2006. This book has given me so much to hope for. I know I will see my husband again. I know now that we will continue our relationship in Heaven and be able to enjoy all the wonderful things we enjoyed together only in Heaven they will be even better. Our reserected new earth will be such a joy to behold. I gave my first book "Heaven" by Randy Alcorn to friend of mine who was going through the same thing with her husband (both had brain cancer). I wanted her to find the same hope that I had in reading this book. I purchased a second book from Amazon and am so very glad I did. I would recommend this book very highly to anyone who is interested in learning the blessings that God has promised his children in Heaven.
A Great Gift.......2007-10-02
I bought this as a gift for my mother. She really likes the way the author described Heaven. She never looked at Heaven in this way before.
Heaven.......2007-09-18
I found Dr. Alcorn's book, Heaven, very enlightening. It answered questions for me. He addressed many of the questions that I have had since the death of my son. His answers were based on scripture and he was honest in his beliefs. We can only know from what God has said in his word and that is always left up to interpretation. I pray that Dr. Alcorn is right in his analysis. His book brought me comfort and peace.
I can't wait to get to Heaven.......2007-09-02
Randy Alcorn challelnges popular notions of heaven in thought provoking yet easy to understand style without sacrificing scholarly integrity. He cites numerous scripture passages as well as Biblical scholars to support his thesis and lays out a much richer and more interesting eternity than most of us have ever imagined. I highly recommend this book. It will provoke interesting discussions and force you to closely examine your notion of heaven.

Bestselling psychic Sylvia Browne offers a detailed account of life in heaven in Life on the Other Side. Readers should be warned that it takes a huge leap of faith to follow this celebrity psychic across the chasm of doubt to the other side. In her opening chapters she explains that she is like the young boy in the movie The Sixth Sense--she sees dead people. When she was a child, these spirits came into her room at night and disappeared when a light went on. "To this day I can't sleep in a completely dark room, because the minute I try it the room starts filling up," she writes. "As a child, it was scary. As an adult, it's just annoying..."
Once she establishes her lengthy connections to life after death (including conversations with a spirit guide named Francine and her own near-death experience), Browne launches into life in the fourth dimension. In a chapter titled "After the Tunnel, Arriving on the Other Side," Browne explains that newcomers pass through a "hall of wisdom" and then review their most recent life through a "scanning machine." In the chapter "Beyond the Entrance," Brown claims that spirits live in whatever kind of home they've longed for, or they recreate a favorite home from earth. Plus, "the more spiritually advanced we become, the more physical beauty we're given, as a badge of our progress and hard work." Sex is known as "merging" and does not require birth control or any commitments of exclusivity. These kinds of glowing accounts of the other side cause skeptics to snicker, believers to feel comforted, and thousands of fans to keep on buying her books. --Gail Hudson

really great book!.......2007-10-05
I love Sylvia and this book is just mind blowing.. a great read.. and a book to read over and over until you can totally understand all of it.
Excellent Book!!!.......2007-06-03
First off, anything written by Sylvia Browne is going to be GREAT!! I truly loved reading this book. It helped me in alot of ways, not only with my deceased father but with other family members that have past on. And learning about what the other side is like, is exciting and it sounds so lovely. It filled me with so much joy that I'll read it over and over. This book is for all those people searching for their spiritual side and a meaning to why they are here.
Awesome book!!! Thank You!!
A look at the afterlife.......2007-05-20
Sylvia Browne has confirmed much of what I thought was true and added a dimension to the afterlife that I hadn't thought about. What she confirmed was that God is a God of love, not vengence. That God loves everyone despite their religious affiliation or lack of one. Christians, Jews, Buddists, Animists and all other religions are in the Afterlife. She doesn't use the word "Heaven", possibly because other religions have another word for it. Something that she said that I hadn't thought about previously is that the afterlife is in another dimension which is about five feet above the ground.
If I sound gullible, then possibly I am, but most people who will buy this book are people who are seeking and if what Sylvia Browne says resonates with their beliefs, they are going to see that as confirming that they are right. If they are skeptical, they may not find anything that they can believe in this book.
Comforting and spiritual.......2007-04-26
This book was one of the best books I have ever read for what I went through. My mother past and I was very unsettled about her passing. Of course having all the questions everyone else wants to know. Did they make it what now are they happy. This book was perfect for helping me accept my mothers passing and making me feel closure knowing how happy my mother is now in heaven. Knowing she will be doing things that she only dreamed about and watching over us all. Knowing she can see it all instead of wondering if she knew anything.
The best book I have ever read that helped me in my life and spirit.
I enjoyed every moment of that book that I passed it onto someone else who just lost a loved one. And it helped them as well.
Thank you Sylvia for your books.
Wonderfully Written Book!.......2007-04-10
My fallopian tube ruptured almost killing me on Dec 15, 2005 and I went to the other side while the doctor's tried to revive me and gave me a blood transfussion. This is what it is really like there. I felt so at home after reading this book because it all made perfect sense to me at last. A short time after reading this book I was contacted by my own spirit guide for the first time and now I know how to communicate with her and I am no longer afraid of spirits and guides because they are here to help us if we want them to.

bought several.......2007-08-25
I have been giving these to family who have lost loved ones. Everyone enjoys this smaller researched overview of Heaven! Highly recommend it.
Short and Sweet.......2007-08-01
Some folks have complained about this book's lack of proofs and research. I frankly don't see that, unless one wishes not to be convinced. Alcorn gives plenty of scriptural back-up for his premises. If you want college text level documentation, you need to pick up his "Heaven" instead.
"Light" is great for someone who doesn't have the energy to attack a substantial work like "Heaven". I bought it for my mom, who is caring for my dad, who is suffering from senile dementia. She tried to read "Heaven", and what she did read was a blessing for her, but honestly, it just required too much work. She had neither the time nor the energy to get through it. After having read "Light", I would not hesitate to recommend it to any but the most meticulous and pedantic of scholars. It is certainly preferable to "Heaven" if you're buying it for someone who is suffering from an illness or situation that saps emotional and intellectual energy.
In addition to its simplicity, "Light" has the power of concise writiing on its side. Short works are often the most powerful, and this is true of "Light". I got more in-depth knowledge from "Heaven" (and I'm re-reading it), but "Light" will stay with me in a way that "Heaven" isn't going to do.
life changing.......2007-05-08
a quick read, but very profound...meaningful in many ways...every person should take time to read this book
Wonderful.......2007-01-09
This little book is one of my all-time favorites. From the intro. on the back cover, I was hooked. Great information, very encouraging and I am looking forward to the future in the place and with the person that I was created for!! Money well spent; I will read it again and again.
Randy All Corn?.......2006-12-18
I am reminded that the Apostle Paul asked, who are we to judge another man's work? Ultimately, we have to place opinions at the feet of Jesus Christ and accept His judgment regarding what is truly valuable. With that in mind, I would still like to offer an opinion on this book.
Some of the strengths of this book are that it is short, very easy to read, generally encouraging and comforting, gives attention to Scripture, and has some thought-provoking images and questions, like a sermon, which engender self-reflection.
Despite this, I really don't like the book. The author touches on important ideas but moves on so quickly that the thoughts lack depth of attention. What angers me is that I get the impression he thinks the unfathomably deep, mysterious, and awesome concepts of heaven and eternity can just be so easily and quickly explained, snap-crackle-pop, in a trite little book which really seems written off the top of his head, and whipped off in a week!
Additionally, I have never before read a writer who so constantly quotes his own material! He uses the Bible to write fiction, and then uses that fiction to explain the Bible! He does the same with personal correspondence. The book reflects a lack of time spent doing any quality research, and largely fails to draw upon a vast array of rich sources to help explain the unspeakable. It gives the impression that he either has a very narrow view of the subject or an inordinately high view of his own work. I personally find his fiction shallow and trite, and yet there he is, quoting it like this is the best and deepest thing he can come up with? It's corny. I really think it reflects a serious blind spot in the author, and it's kind of a sin, that it's so shallow.
Randy Alcorn is also very opinionated, as in all his writings, especially when it comes to money. In this book, an example: "Want a heart for General Motors? Buy stock in it." (p.147) This is so narrow minded.
To me, it's sad that books like this are so popular. I really find that the best thing about this book is that it makes me long for a truly deep, thoughtful, well-researched, well-written biblical book about eternity and heaven - which this is not.

If author Mary Roach was a college professor, she'd have a zero drop-out rate. That's because when Roach tackles a subject--like the posthumous human body in her previous bestseller, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, or the soul in the winning Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife--she charges forth with such zeal, humor, and ingenuity that her students (er, readers) feel like they're witnessing the most interesting thing on Earth. Who the heck would skip that? As Roach informs us in her introduction, "This is a book for people who would like very much to believe in a soul and in an afterlife for it to hang around in, but who have trouble accepting these things on faith. It's a giggly, random, utterly earthbound assault on our most ponderous unanswered question." Talk about truth in advertising. With that, Roach grabs us by the wrist and hauls butt to India, England, and various points in between in search of human spiritual ephemera, consulting an earnest bunch of scientists, mystics, psychics, and kooks along the way. It's a heck of a journey and Roach, with one eyebrow mischievously cocked, is a fantastically entertaining tour guide, at once respectful and hilarious, dubious yet probing. And brother, does she bring the facts. Indeed, Spook's myriad footnotes are nearly as riveting as the principal text. To wit: "In reality, an X-ray of the head could not show the brain, because the skull blocks the rays. What appeared to be an X-ray of the folds and convolutions of a human brain inside a skull--an image circulated widely in 1896--was in fact an X-ray of artfully arranged cat intestines." Or this: "Medical treatises were eminently more readable in Sanctorius's day. Medicina statica delved fearlessly into subjects of unprecedented medical eccentricity: 'Cucumbers, how prejudicial,' and the tantalizing 'Leaping, its consequences.' There's even a full-page, near-infomercial-quality plug for something called the Flesh-Brush." While rigid students of theology might take exception to Roach's conclusions (namely, we're just a bag of bones killing time before donning a soil blanket) it's hard to imagine anyone not enjoying this impressively researched and immensely readable book. And since, as Roach suggests, each of us has only one go-round, we might as well waste downtime with something thoroughly fun. --Kim Hughes
Book Description
"Equal parts Groucho Marx and Stephen Jay Gould, both enlightening and entertaining."Sunday Denver Post & Rocky Mountain News
The best-selling author of Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers now trains her considerable wit and curiosity on the human soul. What happens when we die? Does the light just go out and that's thatthe million-year nap? Or will some part of my personality, my me-ness persist? What will that feel like? What will I do all day? Is there a place to plug in my lap-top?" In an attempt to find out, Mary Roach brings her tireless curiosity to bear on an array of contemporary and historical soul-searchers: scientists, schemers, engineers, mediums, all trying to prove (or disprove) that life goes on after we die. She begins the journey in rural India with a reincarnation researcher and ends up in a University of Virginia operating room where cardiologists have installed equipment near the ceiling to study out-of-body near-death experiences. Along the way, she enrolls in an English medium school, gets electromagnetically haunted at a university in Ontario, and visits a Duke University professor with a plan to weigh the consciousness of a leech. Her historical wanderings unearth soul-seeking philosophers who rummaged through cadavers and calves' heads, a North Carolina lawsuit that established legal precedence for ghosts, and the last surviving sample of "ectoplasm" in a Cambridge University archive. 10 illustrations.

"We're ready to believe you".......2007-09-17
I think it was Bill Murray in Ghostbusters who, during one of their commercials, stared into the camera and said, "We're ready to believe you." In Spook, Mary Roach, having already examined dead bodies here on earth in Stiff, turns her attention to one of the oldest of all questions: Is there life after death? The book's subtitle, "Science Tackles the Afterlife," is wide of the mark. The characters between the pages of Spook, with the exception of Thomas Edison, who may have entertained some ideas about connecting to the ancestors via new found electrical capabilities, would not by and large not be recognizeable as scientists today. What you do encounter are two groups of people. One group willing to disbelieve but "prepared to believe" and anxious to demonstrate a life in the hereafter. Another group, represented largely by Mary Roach, who are willing to believe, but reasonably sceptical at the outset. What I was clearly unaware of, until reading Spook, were the sheer variety of mechanisms deployed to ascertain a life in some next phase. Reincarnation, of course, which opens the book, is well-reported, and actually contains some interesting cases, but other areas were new to me. Readers who are unfamiliar with ectoplasmic parties -- I thought Ghostbusters invented it -- and the careful efforts of technicians to determine whether the dead lose weight and to explain that loss by the departure of the soul from the departed will find in Spook an entire underworld of quirky machinations. Actually, one of my favorite passages finds Ms. Roach trying to explain why a particular "researcher" found that the dead actually gain weight immediately upon extinction. That weight gain prompts Roach to speculate that perhaps the portal to the next life is a Dairy Queen drive-through window. In a nutshell, according to Ms. Roach, this is a book for people who want desperately to believe in a life after death, but who have a difficult time accepting that possibility. By the book's conclusion you are not quite sure where Ms. Roach stands and, fortunately, she provides curious readers with a short summary chapter in which she states that, "yes," she would rather believe that not believe, "What the hell, I believe in ghosts." I don't know where Ms. Roach's gifts will next take her, She has written about the "dead," and now also about the attempt to connect with the spirits of the deceased. I'll likely follow. She brings a genuine personal touch to her work and her humor has an infectious quality about it. These are not typically waters into which I'd venture. It is to Mary Roach's credit that I can wade through them and enjoy the experience.
a good overview that doesn't seem to want much depth.......2007-07-23
In her acknowledgements at the end of the book, Mary Roach identifies the mindset that I think makes her books (this and Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers) successful despite the seemingly superficial investigation (accompanied by self-admitted Google searches) of her subject matters: she approaches the use of bodies by science and the attempts to scientifically prove life after death from the perspective of the novice, out to learn a thing or two.
Does this make either of her two books in-depth studies? Of course not, and though her hasty conclusions at the end do her disservice, this book comes across as a pleasant read into some of the oddities involved in the world of paranormal investigation, from tests of random images that would be visible only to out-of-body spirits above the ceiling to mediums who might have second stomachs to let them cough up ectoplasm on command. For this book especially, the subject of psychics and mediums and those who are aching to prove that they are anything more than yahoos is prime material to spotlight some fools and con artists.
Of course, there are some somewhat serious endeavors to try to prove the reality of spiritual visitations, from the possibilities of electromagentism or subaural frequencies on the brain, as well as an interesting look into a legal case that seemed to confirm the possibility that a ghost could have some say over the state of his estate. While the cases in this book were not as in-depth as in Stiff, the previous book was almost scary at times for its depth. Roach seems to be treading an area that doesn't let her win very easily--if she gets into too much depth, her interest may seem a little too morbid (like listening to the head of The Darwin Awards, who seems a little too amused by these particular deaths), but if she moves quickly through some other subjects, she comes across as being a little too glib and quick to move on. As I mentioned before, the regular Google references almost sounds like product placement as well as making her research sound superficial (though it could be worse with regular Wikipedia citations), but Roach's wit and curiosity are what carry this book. She takes a rather natural skepticism, wanting some answers but willing to let people take their best shots, and more often than not they show their bias and need to excuse rather than scientific curiosity. And along the way, Roach gets to amuse with tidbits about people's conception of science and fact and the way they will bend it into something alien when trying to apply it to paranormal activity. While the side of science does not score highly either, mainly because it has been put in the position of trying to prove a negative (that there AREN'T connections being made with the other world), Roach gives some intetresting cases for both sides, and while she works with the idea that certainty is tough to have in this subject matter, she does show that some well deserved cheap shots can be taken at those who take this area a little too seriously.
dissapointing!.......2007-06-14
I was bored with the majority of this book. Every twenty pages or so Mary Roach explores interesting themes but completely exhausts them. Toward the middle of the book (which I felt like I needed to finish) I found myself skimming through and skipping several pages at a time.
Her jokes weren't funny. Her writing was condescending. Her sidenotes gradually became more and more annoying.
Fun and Humorous Trip Down Discovery Lane.......2007-06-11
The research presented in the book is fun and intriguing. Whether or not you agree with the author's conclusions, you have to love her flippant writing style. I purchased this book because I love her column in Reader's Digest. I certainly was not disappointed. I can't wait to read her first book.
fluffy - but fun........2007-03-28
Delivered on all I expected it to be. I learned a little, I groaned a little. A great subway/ airplane read - not for a research paper but will give you something to talk about at your next party. I mean really - Watson thought he had a HALO???

Looking back, John Edward now sees the early signs that he was destined to become an acclaimed psychic and medium. "There were times when I knew things I shouldn't have known," he writes. "Simple things like who was coming over, or who was on the phone." He knew events in family history that no one had told him about. He was inexplicably fascinated with television characters that possessed supernatural powers. He'd see auras around schoolteachers and hear voices that whispered true information in his mind. Eventually his gifts expanded into hearing the names of spirits "who'd gone to the other side." Finally, as a teenager Edward began to claim rather than question his psychic abilities and committed his life work to pursuing and learning about his gifts. Now that he has become a renowned medium (appearing on numerous talk shows, including Larry King Live), Edwards has written an entertaining "my life as a psychic" type of autobiography, packed with fascinating true stories. At the same time, Edward offers an engaging self-help book, teaching readers how to visit a medium and even showing seekers how they can recognize and develop their own psychic abilities. --Gail Hudson

Still Wanting More Answers!!!.......2007-07-28
For those who are touched by this book, I want you to know that there is something we can't explain. We all have paranormal abilities like John Edward, James Van Praagh, Sylvia Browne, and Char Margolis to name a few. The book is reassuring at times because it makes you feel like you're not alone in this world as some people might perceive us to be weird or strange. The book is about John Edward's biography and is ever evolving psychic abilities. He talks about getting depressed or iritable around negative events. I got this book probably before September 11, 2001 so it doesn't have anything to do with it. For me, I recognized that power and fear when the predictions come true. I'm not so much into contacting the deceased as I am concerned with the future but at the same time, our psychic abilities don't always work to our advantages like getting lottery numbers or picking the right mate. In fact, we can pick for others but we just can't pick for ourselves. John's honesty comes through in his writing and it's an okay biography as well as reassuring that this is not all there is but I want more answers especially about our past lives, our spirit guides, and why we're drawn to certain people. Maybe that could be his next book.
A Great Read!.......2007-07-20
One Last Time was terrific! John Edwards did an excellent job of explaining his gift with the world in a very pragmatic and humorous way. The explanations of the "unexplained", which may have happened to you or those close to you, are sensible and can provide even the most skeptical with a level of comfort not easily found.
fan of crossing over.......2007-04-21
john is a top medium his book is like been in the show well written and a comfort to read as all the others, his personality shines in one last time,i do believe there is more, another book the calling of your true self elizabeth anne bell is another book i could not put down it also rings with truth both well worth reading
Excellent Book.......2007-04-01
John Edward is a remarkable man. I loved this book because it made me feel that those that I have loved and who have gone to the other side are really still here with me.
Easy to Read and Interesting.......2007-03-14
I found while reading this book I could almost hear John speaking. It was really written in the same style as he speaks so I was comfortable with it from the beginning.
I liked the fact that it started from his beginnings as a child and progressed through what was at the time his current situation.
I would recommend reading this book first, before any of his others. It will give a better point of reference for his following books as he seems to refer back to it in some of his other writings. My wife tried to read his most recent book first and found it much easier to "get" him by stopping and reading this one first, at my suggestion.
Book Description
John Edward, Suzane Northrup, and George Anderson are just a few of the prominent American mediums who have been accused of being frauds. But what if a respected scientist challenged them to make contact with the beyond under controlled laboratory conditions? What if the results not only stunned a skeptical scientist but also offered astonishing answers to a timeless question: Is there life after death?
THE AFTERLIFE EXPERIMENTS
Risking his academic reputation, Dr. Gary E. Schwartz asked well-known mediums to become part of a series of experiments to prove, or disprove, the existence of an afterlife. This riveting narrative, with electrifying transcripts, documents stringently monitored experiments in which mediums attempted to contact dead friends and relatives of "sitters" who were masked from view and never spoke, depriving the mediums of any cues.
Here are the results that awed sitters and researchers alike: a revelation about a son's suicide, what a deceased father wanted to say about his last days in a coma, the transformation of a man's lifelong doubts about the afterlife, and, most amazing of all, a forecast of a beloved spouse's death. Forced by data to abandon skepticism, Schwartz presents this amazing account of his groundbreaking work, compelling from first page to last.

Real After-Life Confirmation with Book!.......2007-10-07
I was reading through this book at Barnes & Noble and jokingly thought, "Loved ones on the other side, let me know you like this book!" Sure enough, right then and there, someone tickled me on the back of my neck. I immediately turned around and nobody was there. Thanks, Other Side. This book got endorsed by the spirits around me, so it's the real deal! The book is very well written and I plan to buy one next week.
boring...too much personal info.......2007-08-29
I don't really care about the background info on this man and his life, where he has worked...yadda yadda...it takes about 20 pages until it gets interesting and really into SUBJECT MATTER...unfortunately I've already lost interest...
Gary Schwartz - A personal experience made this book even more powerful.......2007-08-21
Wonderful book- I too was a skeptic until I was almost 40 and started going
into trance-like states where I would see scenes, people, images of various
time periods. During this trance state, I could barely move, could not speak, except for some strange words, I knew not to be English. As the speech portions progressed, I tried to research what type of language I was speaking and began recording and writing everything. I soon saw a pattern in the words and realized I was speaking another language and amazingly, not of this Earth. There is a star system called Roag, comprised of 22 planets, all united and all speaking this one language. What I WAS seeing were scenes from past lives lived on those planets.Scenes now became much more vivid and extremely specific, with names, dates, places, etc. As my trance states became more intense, telepathic communication now entered into the scenes as a few different people were explaining to me what I was seeing & hearing. I am not a kook, nut or ex-mental patient. I was in Nursing school and my children were almost grown when this began to happen. Now, I can also see a bubble of light around people, looking like threads,
living energy threads of awareness and filled with a person's life-their families, their past, things they like (and don't like to do)and so much more. I cannot possibly go into everything in this limited space-and I do hope to put everything together in a series of books in the future. But I do know that life most definitely goes on and is eternal. We are like balls of light, filled with "strands" of awareness, which never cease to exist. We
not only continue to exist but continue to return. I no longer believe, I know.
Gary Schwartz... UNETHICAL!.......2007-04-24
Dr. Schwartz, I didn't have a choice of rating your book with NO stars, so I gave it one. You should be ashamed of yourself for exploiting Allison DuBois and her work with you. How dare you promise confidentiality and then betray the very person one of your books is based on?
Another Possibility.......2007-04-03
After reading this book I can see how people come to the conclusion the mediums are indeed in contact with the spirit world. I believe some of them are. My personal spiritual impression, and I've sensed this with the TV productions produced with many mediums, is that they really are in touch with these spirits. However, what has come to me is that many of these "peeping spirits" giving information to the mediums are spirits of a malevolent nature, in other words evil spirits. They know more about us than we think and can appear as righteous spirits giving special information that "only the departed loved one would know". They really can impart information about a wedding day, a flower in the hair, or a special event because they (the evil spirits) were there as well.
This doesn't always mean all mediums are deceivers, but they can be duped. And why would these evil spirits want to deceive us? My personal experience has been not to underestimate the ends the adversary of all that is good will go to keep us from focusing on what is really important and developing our faith in God.
Once again, I am not criticizing those who believe these things. It's hard not to believe such things. Just be very careful and understand there is a great deal of ourselves to be lost when we give our faith over to what may turn out to be a very cruel, cosmic hoax.

EXCELLANT.......2007-10-03
Loosing a 'friend' is never easy....for some, as with myself....tramatic..it has been two months.....
but with Kim Sheridan.........and the stories.....it has helped, given me hope and some peace.
I DO NOT recommend Sylvia Browne's book 'Spirit of Animals"..it is a picture book with two minutes of reading time......and you do not feel any better for it.
This book gives you hope, peace, and that just maybe you and your friend will meet again on THIS side.............
Animals and the Afterlife.......2007-09-06

an emtional warm blanket.......2007-03-18
kim's book has been answered prayers for myself and many family members and friends.i cannot imagine how she was able to pick and choose through so many broken hearts to help us. i shed tears while reading this book both from grief and joy and allowed myself a sense of peace and understanding of transition that i had not learned even after a lifetime of critical care nursing. i appreciate the authors' respect for all life, and the different ways it is celebrated, mourned and honoured throughout the world. i appreciate greatly the biblical referances and the beautiful quotations. even though i miss my family greatly, i rejoice in knowing they will meet me at the rainbow bridge....thankyou kim, bless you and your work...looking forward to the next book....hurry!!!

Not many authors kill their main character on page two, but when Gary Soto does in The Afterlife the tactic results in a richly textured coming of age story. Chuy is a normal teenage guy, making his way in the barrios of Fresno, California, and hoping to impress a pretty girl. Carefully combing his hair in the restroom at Club Estrella, he only has a few moments to consider his "loverboy" strategy before his young life is (literally) cut short by a knife-wielding stranger who misinterprets a compliment.
Soon Chuy is floating above his bleeding body, embarking on a journey of personal exploration. As he drifts though his hometown (tightening his stomach muscles so as not to get blown off course) he manages to achieve many of the things he didn't when he was alive--recognizing how much he is loved by family and friends, saving a life, punishing a thug, and even falling in love (with a ghost-girl who has committed suicide).
Soto has a knack for particularly apt comparisons ("the sun rose pink as a scar," "laundry hung like the faded flags of defeated nations,"), which brings beauty and clarity to this dangerous world of cholos and cabrones (and if you don't know what those are, there's a glossary in the back). Aside from a couple plot points left dangling, The Afterlife offers a tangibly detailed portrait of a young life worth living. (Ages 13 and older)--Brangien Davis
Book Description
You'd think a knife in the ribs would be the end of things, but for Chuy, that's when his life at last gets interesting. He finally sees that people love him, faces the consequences of his actions, finds in himself compassion and bravery . . . and even stumbles on what may be true love.
A funny, touching, and wholly original story by one of the finest authors writing for young readers today.

The Afterlife by Gary Soto.......2007-05-10
I read this novel while studying Latino authors for a multicultural project. To begin with, this novel was the first one I read by Gary Soto and I really enjoyed it. The novel kept my attention and upon reflection I can see how Soto's love of poetry influences his writing. The Afterlife vivid imagery places the reader in the setting. The reader can almost expereince the smells and the sounds of the city. I believe the story started off strong but the conclusion of the novel is weak. Questions are left unanswered. Some of Soto's other works such as his short stories in Baseball in April offer stronger resolution and are more satisfying. Still, I recommend The Afterlife for young adult readers. The themes of friendship, compassion and romance will keep young readers interested in the outcome.
3 stars from me, 5 stars from my students..........2007-03-01
Although I find _The Afterlife_ to be a somewhat mediocre (if unique) book, I have had several students in my classes read this and respond with much enthusiasm. It is important to keep in mind that adults are not the target audience here, and there is something that really grabs the interest of male adolescent readers, at least those in my classes who have read this book.
As a teacher of often reluctant readers, I am always keeping my eyes open for interesting new books, not just from lists of recommended reading, but by seeking input from my students as well. This is how I was first introduced to _The Afterlife_ by Gary Soto. One of my students read the book and began to recommend it to others. After reading _The Afterlife_, many students have responded that it is one of the best, if not the best book they have ever read.
Several students read the book, then I decided it was time to read it for myself. I was disappointed. However, after reflecting, I could see the appeal for my students. In order to attempt to define the appeal, I need to explain the basic plot.
The main character, Chuy, a young Latino, is stabbed and killed after complimenting another teenager's yellow shoes. His spirit leaves his body, and his spirit slowly begins to pass into the next world. However, he is still able to move around and observe his world without being seen. Along the way, he meets a young lady who has also left her body and become a spirit.
If all of this sounds fantastic, it is, but although it can be unusual, Soto never lets his book become sensational.
I believe the reason this novel holds the interest of my students is that it focuses on one of the deepest desires of teenagers: the desire to stand back and analyze their world without the world looking back at them, the desire to do good things without considering "image" or the disapproval of their peers, the desire to establish a relationship with a member of the opposite sex without the discomfort of their own body always getting in the way. In fact, although Chuy seems like a good guy before his death, he is better able to define his world, does some of his kindest acts, and forms more meaningful relationships after.
By the time we are adults, most of us have established a certain balance in our lives. It only stands to reason that a book like _The Afterlife_ appeals less to adults than those who are in the midst of a time in their lives that can seem very unbalanced at times. I give this book four stars based on the average between the three it would receive from me and the five it would receive from my students if they were writing this review.
The ''Afterlife''.......2006-11-22
"The Afterlife" by Gary Soto was a facinating, well written book. Chuy was murderd in Club Estrella. A man in yellow shoes who shares the same name as Chuy murders Chuy after a comment"I like your shoes" Chuy said. Then the man in yellow shoes just starts stabbinhg Chuy three times to his xchest and back. Chuy shares with us the experience he had being a ghost. He met a girl that was also a ghost and fell in love with her. Then he satrted to meet other ghost and try to comfort them about being a gohst which he thought was fun. H liked the idea of walking through people and buildings and making people feel his cold presence. He found it fun being a gohst and finds out his body is vanishing away. I loved this book sand recommend it for everyone.
The Afterlife.......2006-05-12
The Afterlife by Gary Soto was a fascinating book. In the story, a man with yellow shoes has murdered Chuy. The book is about Chuy, and his thoughts and actions in the afterlife. Now being a ghost, he can pass through buildings and people, but his touch leaves behind a cold chill. The story is fascinating because you feel sorry for him, and his lost life. You can understand his emotions. Chuy is an average kid who tries to do good in his afterlife, to make things better for at least one person. It is also about his meeting with other ghosts and the impacts he has on them. I liked this book because it makes you think about what you would do as a ghost. The story was really well told, and Gary Soto puts you into the life of this kid. I recommend this book to anyone who can stand blood and gore, but likes a happy ending. It was a great read and you don't want to put it down until you've finished.
The Afterlife by Gary Soto.......2006-03-31
The book that i read was titled: "The Afterlife" by Gary Soto. It has 158 pages. It's about a high school boy named Jesus, but everyone just calls him Chuy. As you've probably guessed, he dies in the first chapter. The book is about him wandering around as a ghost.
I'll bet you're wandering about how he dies. Well, he dies in a bathroom, inside a night club, when he tells this guy, who was wearing yellow shoes, that he likes his shoes. The guy then stabbed him. Yeah, I know. pretty dumb way to die, huh?
First, he goes to his parent's house. They were mourning his death. After this, he wonders around Fresno, California. Hey, guess who he sees! He sees the man in yellow shoes. You know, the guy who killed him. So, he does what anyone in his situation would do. He scares the crap out of him. The next thing he does is he goes to his girl freind's house, and as you can imagine, she was very upset with his death. It's here that he realizes that he's slowly vanishing. His feet have already become stumps!
After this, he travels down the street, where he spots a girl who is also dead. She has just died. So, Chuy shows her the ropes of being dead, like how to float and other things that ghosts do. He was also kind of showing off. He finds out that her name is Crystal. When they first meet, he notices that his hands have already started to disappear. Chuy says he has some stuff to straiten out, so they decide to meet there the next day.
The next day, he finds out more about his murderer. Later, he also finds out a lot more about Chrystal, like how and why she died, and how both of them are connected. What will he find out about the man with the yellow shoes? How did Chrystal die? What will happen to Chuy? Well, if you want to find out, you'll just have to read it.
I would definatley recommened this book. I enjoyed reading it. I think it would be an excellent addition to almost any library.
Book Description
Afterlife Encounters is the culmination of the Afterlife Encounters Survey, Arcangel's five-year, international survival study. Arcangel presents all-new, first-hand accounts from individuals who've experienced visitations from the dead. Afterlife Encounters reveals the results of that study and, for the first-time, offers a systematic categorization of such encounters, explaining when these encounters are most likely to occur, and what type of apparition is likely to appear. Arcangel's eye-opening conclusion is that Afterlife Encounters provide lasting comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

AFTERLIFE ENCOUNTERS: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Experiences.......2007-03-20
This is one of my ABSOLUTE Favorites. Dianne Arcangel is a highly credible woman and an excellent researcher. Her book is a fantastic collection of personal accounts. Her writing makes this an easy and fascinating read. As a retired HOSPICE worker, myself, I am so well aware of experiences that people who are dying will share with us. These experiences are so numerous and well-doumented by hospice workers. Reading this book will uplift your spirt and will help you through the grieving process. This is a must for anyone who has lost a loved one. I am so looking forward to Dianne writing another book.
Can't wait to get to the other side.......2006-07-12
i bought this book for myself and couldn't put it down. Found myself crying with the absolute joy of what we can expect. then i proceeded to buy 3 more copies for family members. no one will be sorry about buying this book. I lost a beloved niece by suicide in 1986 and often wondered what would happen to her after death. This book makes me believe that she's waiting for me, along with my beloved dog Charlie.
Reasoned approach.......2006-03-15
This book is one of the few on the subject that actually takes a reasoned and scientifically valid approach. There is none of the gee whiz factor here---just many years of study.
Visits from the other side.......2006-01-30
Paranormal phenomena, such as survival of bodily death, can be difficult to swallow without personal experience. The very mention of such personal experiences in polite conversation is often met with suspicion.
While doing hospice work, the author worked with many people who received visits from newly departed loved ones. Though most found these experiences comforting, some were taken aback by their seeming unreality. The book was written to validate such experiences so that people can focus on the comfort rather than the excoriating self-doubt and fear of going crazy.
The backbone of the book is her study, which categorizes different kinds of apparitions, the circumstances in which they occur, and personality profiles of people experiencing them. Her wealth of anecdotal examples weaves through and animates the entire book.
Ms. Arcangel takes special care to rule out more mundane poo-pooing tossed out by "skeptics" to trivialize and poo-poo these phenomena. What makes these visits even more believable to me is their extreme specificity and personal nature, though my skepticism is softened by my own personal experience with such visits.
She describes different kinds of mediums and documents her own conversations with some of them.
Her writing is clear and easy to read, and backed by solid scholarship. My only complaint is the vaguely written subject heads in the table of contents, which necessitates reading it from front to back rather than nibbling away at it, as I am so wont to. Interested above all in her analysis, I found myself skipping some of the examples.
This book is useful both for parapsychology novices and for people well versed in this field.
Comforting and Challenging.......2005-10-28
Perhaps the best evidence of after death communication is that ordinary people have been experiencing them since the beginning of recorded history. In this book, Dianne Arcangel reveals the results of her five-year international survival study by using real stories from real people as she catagorizes the data. Both the stories and the data are rather amazing. If that was all the book was about, it would be well worth reading, but it isn't. Also fascinating to read about is her participation in the Afterlife Watching experiments involving mediumship research. Another captivating section of the book is her private discernment(reading) with well known medium George Anderson.
Even if you are a sceptic, read this book. It may or may not change your opinion, but you will be better informed.
Book Description
Sylvia Browne believes that if people can remember why they are here and what they are supposed to be doing here, their lives will ultimately become happier, healthier, and more spiritually fulfilling. In this new book, she helps readers celebrate and appreciate life-by reminding them of the countless blessings they received before coming into this world. With chapters on forgiveness, past lives, contacting The Other Side, and discovering life's purpose, she also tells uplifting stories of those who, with her help, found their way.

Good read.......2007-07-19
I enjoy all of Sylvia Brownes' books, and this one is no different. There are alot of skeptics ou there who don't care for her and her books. But, I really enjoy it all! Sylvias' books comfort me, and let me know that I am doing what I was ment to do. How do I know this? Because it just feels right, and I would not have trusted many of my instincts before reading her books and now I do. They give me the guidance and confidence I need to get through life.
Sylvia is great ... jay "evangalist" another story entirely..........2006-08-10
The book was great and well worth the investment. I find Sylvia to be a very interesting and helpful human being.
Though I am a Christian person - the BIGGEST PART OF CHRISTIANITY TO LOVE AND BE KIND! I get so angry when I see posts like that from (jay "evangalist") what I call HYPOCRITICAL 'CHRISTIANS'. Check his posts... He clearly hasn't read any of her books - He made the same posting on every single one of her book comments.
Phenomenal.......2006-04-06
For those suffering the loss of a loved one, this book brings great comfort, makes sense and answers questions we all have about the death experience and afterlife. This was the first SB book I read and bought 5 more. Highly recommended!
all I have read.......2006-02-19
You know, I have been reading quite a few of Sylvia's books and all of them, by far, are great readings. I had never heard of Sylvia until about 3 years ago when I saw her on Montel. I was in awed of her so I started buying her books.
She has answered all of the blanks that I had throughout my life and I totally believe in what Sylvia has to say.
No matter what book you are reading of hers, they are inspiring, and educational.
If you have never picked up one of her books, please do so and it's okay to be skeptical, just enjoy her books. She is a good writer and not only that, she is funny.
Linda
Very helpful.......2005-10-25
Another insightful book by by favorite psychic!
There is a lot to be learned here, forgiving, letting go, understanding why we are the way we are (does that make sense? anyway...)
This book is comforting, positive, and spiritually healing.
Thank you Sylvia...
