3 out of 5 stars A good history lesson.......2007-09-15

I reccomend this book for those looking for a history into the DC universe. Start with Crisis on infinite earths, move on to this, then read the series 52 and you'll be ready for final crisis which is on the way. I put this "Crisis" on the lowest rung of all the DC events, but still think it is a good read for those wanting to get to know the DC universe better.
This book sets up several events that lead to BIG plots going on right now in the DC comic line. (Superboy Prime getting locked up on OA and now has broken out in Green Lantern Corps for one, Superman losing his power, Batman going paranoid bonkers and Wonder Woman killing a man leading to 52, a year without the big three is another) You don't need the infinite crisis companion for this, but it wouldn't hurt if you want to get the best picture possible of what all is going on.
All in all I would say it's a good buy if you never read it before. If you have, use Wikipedia for a refresher on the plot if you get rusty and save your money for Final Crisis, my hunch is...it's gonna be GOOD.

3 out of 5 stars Superboy Punch!.......2007-07-10

This series is oft-mocked by Marvel execs and comic fans for the "Superboy punch" that brought dead characters back to life (such as Robin II aka Jason Todd) and slightly altered Batman's origin (I think...it was never really directly addressed in the Batman books). This "punch" was supposed to "fix" incongruities in DC continuity, but if you're worried about continuity then that probably means that you're taking super-hero comics just a little too seriously.

And that's the main problem here--this series buckles under the weight of seriousness. "Infinite Crisis" started off with a bullet-in-the-head of Blue Beetle (not included in this collection!), and ended with a bullet-in-the-head of one of the major villains. In between, other characters were killed in similarly brutal fashion...and for what? The art is gorgeous, but the storyline became too convoluted to follow as the series progressed.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-06-27

One of the best comics I ever read, maybe one that will go right next to the classic Crisis. Very nice story, great art, it's a must have for any comic fan.

4 out of 5 stars Another Crisis.......2007-03-27

Twenty years after the first 'Crisis' Earth's greatest heroes have lost their way. Wonder Woman has been branded a murderer because the world saw her kill Maxwell Lord out of context. Superman doubts himself and is much less effective a symbol of goodness and hope then he used to be. Batman is completely paranoid and is spying on his fellow metahumans. The three are completely unable to work together. In the pocket universe they exiled themselves to, Alexander Luthor, Superman-2, and Superboy-Prime begin a plan to replace Earth-1 (our Earth) with one that is 'perfect'. But things are going horribly wrong with Batman's OMAC and Brother Eye project going homicidally wrong and trying to kill all methumans and masked vigilantes. There is also a alien war going on in deep space that the Green Lantern Corps are involved in.

This large scale story more than rivals the original "Crisis on Infinite Earths" but takes that story, and twenty years of continuity across the whole DC universe, including Jason Todd and Superman's death, rouge Green Lanterns, and especially "Identity Crisis", which triggered many of events that ends tragically here. I liked this story better than the 1985 original, probably because this time around I know the character better, having seen the events leading up to this Crisis as they happened. For the original Crisis I had to backtrack everything that was somewhat before my time.

A lot happens here, and quiet literally nothing will be the same; again. DC has used the opportunity to retcon many stories again, and again many loved heroes change drastically, die, or disappear. The most radical change is with Superboy-Prime, who becomes a raving psychotic. Alexander Luthor has changed from a benevolent scientist to more like the Luthor of our universe. And once again there is a tragedy to the Flash family, but more than what you'd expect.

If there is any complaint it is one I had with the original 'Crisis'; the epic fights are so massive that it's hard to keep up with what's going on. The Rann-Thanagar War was huge space battle that rivals "Star Wars". The Battle of Metropolis was the ultimate superpowered WWE match. The battles were extremely chaotic, and kind of hard to keep track of who dies and what is going on at times. But here it is not as unwieldy as the first time. Also some of the violence is pretty grisly; I have no problem with that myself, but for some younger readers (well, more like their parents) may be a little shocked by how graphic it gets at times.

"Infinite Crisis" can also be an interesting allegory on the Patriot Act, with it's idea of Batman spying on his own people; but I may be dismissed as a bit paranoid myself. All in all great story, and one that any DC fan should read.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting yet ..........2007-03-12

DC cleans up, again..

Too many characters and too view titles, or too many titles and too view writers and artists? Either way, the attempt to clean up the roster was somewhat of a disappointment. But, it was due time to see the same-old, same plot of Earth I, Earth II, Earth III, etc. revamped. Was this cleanup by democratic reader vote? or single author vote?

I was directed to this edition by reading a latest edition of Superman and Flash graphic novels which referenced demises and events affecting some old favorites. Having left the regular comic book reading phase, I am the infrequent collector/buyer, so it was disappointing to see some favorite characters eliminated and phased-out.

The plots and dialogue of the new image, however, are in line with today's rougher and grittier events and entertainment.

The Death of Superman was a 1992 stunt that turned out to be DC's bestselling Superman comic ever. The massive 11-issue crossover among four different series (Superman, Superman: The Man of Steel, Action Comics, and Justice League of America) introduces an unstoppable alien named Doomsday who creates a path of destruction on his way to the heart of Metropolis and whom Superman must stop at any cost. It's of interest as a milestone of the Superman mythos (though of course the outcome didn't last), but casual fans might be underwhelmed by the unfamiliar villain and the unfamiliar Justice League (with Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, and other minor heroes rather than the traditional lineup), the drawn-out story (by Dan Jurgens, Jerry Ordway, Louise Simonson, and Roger Stern), and the ordinary art (by Jurgens, Jon Bogadanove, Tom Grummett, and Jackson Guice). --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-25

The trade reproduction of the mainstream crossover stunt that DC comics pulled back in the early 1990s. Everyone knew they weren't going to kill him, so from that point of view it was pretty silly. Other than that, most of the story and the whole Doomsday beatdown wasn't too bad, although perhaps it tailed off a little towards the end.

5 out of 5 stars I Remember the Day Well...The Day Superman Died.......2007-09-12

In the 90s, this was definitely one of the 100 most shocking moments, the death of Superman. In America, he is a hero for sure when it comes to fictional characters. The story starts off slow, like most stories do, but it does serve to build a giant explosion of action that will keep you fliping the pages to see what happens next.

Doomsday, the villain of the story, is definitely portrayed as an unstoppable force. He is pure destruction, killing many people while leaving rubble and the JLA destroyed in the wake, a real challenge for Superman. There will never be a moment in the history of comics that will ever top this story. Since then, we know what happens after the story and Superman's return, but that doesn't stop this from being any less of a good read.

4 out of 5 stars Superman is Dead!.......2007-07-17

Lots of action in this book. There's not really a story to it. The only important things are that Superman died and that the Justice Leugue got beat up really badly. A fun but short read and a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-07-03

Wow, I never thought it would happen. Superman died! Great story, well-written, well-drawn. The bad guy, Doomsday, looks awsome. I can't wait to find out were he came from. Get all three in the Death of Superman series, it ties the story all up in a nice bow. Anyone who likes Superman stories will love (and hate) the Death of Superman. It almost feels like it really happened.

5 out of 5 stars Superman vs. Doomsday.......2007-06-26

This is the greatest Superman comic book ever! You are probably wondering,"How the heck did a 10-year old get ahold of this?" I found this in an old shoebox in the basement. Graphic novel indeed! This is incredibly violent. But it's more than just mindless boxing.I wouldn't recommend this for 5-year olds.(alias:my brother)Age group:10-70.Content includes:violence, cussing, destruction, death, and blood.Think that's bad?The violence doesn't even compare with today's comics.I was flipping through a Spider-Man comic in a bookstore.Spider-Man smashed a man's face into a concrete girder!Terrible! There are several heroes in this book that are beaten to a pulp.First Guy Gardner(don't know the heck he is)is beaten until his face is puffy!Booster Gold(still don't who these guys are)has his head stuck in a car door and slammed shut.Fire and Ice(who the heck are these people)get a good k.o. x) And Blue Beetle is bashed face first into pipes and concrete.Superman,on the other hand, puts up a good, bloody fight to the finish. At the very end, each fighter throws their final punch, knocking the blood out of each other's mouth, the fight is over. Both dead.Greatest book ever!

This is the middle section of the Death and Life of Superman, or whatever you want to call that particular story.

Metropolis and the rest of the world are having problems coming to terms with the fact that he is gone.

Others see his body as a resource they can use in their schemes.

THIS WAS COOL TO ME BUT THE FRIEND LIKED IT MORE THAN ME BECAUSE HE IS A SUPERMAN FAN

4 out of 5 stars Good middle to the Death of Superman story.......2006-12-08

This is continued off the Death of Superman and tells you what the world would be like without its greatest superhero. I'm not a huge Superman fan and I had to applaude the way this beginning part of the Death of Superman franchise handled us non-fans and made us wanting more. This book shows how people handled Superman's death and leaks into the beginning of The Return of Superman, which just isn't worth anyones time. If you read Death of Superman and liked it then you should purchase this and keep the magic going.

3 out of 5 stars Mike Manley--the secret master.......2005-12-12

Manley is the best kept secret in the comics world. He is capable of drawing anything--in any style--beautifully. But he is dependent on routine comics work to make a living and it is always rush job stuff. Never anything where one can put time and love into it.
SO he has has own magazine. Here you can see the secret master at work--uh, behind the scenes, as editor. Once again, we don't get to see Manley unleashed. A few glimpses, yes.
GET this zine collection just to see Manley's work! That's my advice!

I have always been a huge fan of the JSA. In my younger days, I collected every issue of All Star Squadron. As I got older and married, I sold my collection to younger enthusiasts. Now, I can revisit my former passion in this book that describes all the issues of All-Star Squadron as well as interesting articles about the history of All-Star Comics and the JSA. If you are interested in greater understanding of the history of JSA, I heartily recommend this book.

Beyond the Numbers presents a thought-provoking series of essays by leading authorities on issues of population and consumption. The essays both define the poles of debate and explore common ground beyond the polarized rhetoric.

Specific chapters consider each of the broad topics addressed at the International Conference on Population and Development held in September 1994 in Cairo, Egypt. The essays are supplemented by sidebars and short articles featuring more impassioned voices that highlight issues of interest not fully explored in the overviews.

As well as providing a sense of the difficulties involved in dealing with these issues, the essays make clear that constructive action is possible.

    5 out of 5 stars What a match-up!.......2007-07-17

Suffice to say, this is a blockbuster of a compliation :D

I first got hooked on Superman vs Doomsday with The Death of Superman story (which is also excellent) and was really pleased with the stories in this novel. The art although about 15 years old (for most of the stories) is great with Superman showing his emotions and thoughts in a very real way. He LOOKS real, unlike the modern final story in the compliation where he looks like a blow-up doll due to the different art. This also goes for Doomsday art-wise. He looks scary and menacing in the older style art but looks a bit ridiculous in the 2000 story.

That is the only whinge I have. Buy this now if you can, I highly recommend it.

    3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2007-06-24

The Superman: Doomsday Omnibus features the sequel to the Death of Superman, as well as various prequels to the DC mega event from the early 90's that saw the Man of Steel bite the big one. Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey finds the Man of Steel learning that Doomsday is still alive and on Apokalips causing problems for Darkseid. This chapter reveals Doomsday's origin as well, as the two go toe to toe once again. While this section of the Omnibus is great on it's own, it's the other issues collected here that are disappointing. Among others, they feature a past meeting between Doomsday and Darkseid, as well as Doomsday slaughtering the Green Lantern Corps some years before. While these stories are compelling, they are basically non-sensical and make no sense for continuity's sake either. Doomsday Wars is by far the worst part of the book, which finds Superman and Doomsday becoming unlikely allies. While the Doomsday Omnibus has it's moments to be sure, the overall package is a mixed bag. There's solid action and great artwork throughout the Omnibus, but whether or not it's worth picking up is entirely up to you.

4 out of 5 stars Loved the rematch - I wish the story ended there.......2007-04-05

The first half of the Doomsday compilation rocked. It was great learning the history of Doomsday (and what a rich history). It nicely ties together why these two arch enemies must rematch, and the action on the rematch is great. Unfortunately, the second half of the book is a disappointment. DC kept on resurrecting Doomsday for sales - and in the process ruins the legend of Doomsday. The low point was the final story where Lex Luther has resurrected Doomsday. The artwork was terrible; the story made no sense; and Doomsday no longer is the force to be feared. Superman barely breaks a sweat finishing him off - which is absurd becomes Doomsday cannot be beaten the same way twice.

    4 out of 5 stars IT HAS IT'S FLAWS BUT IT'S WORTHWHILE.......2006-07-11

Back in the early 90's, DC comics came up with one of the greatest marketing promotions in the history of comics...They planned to kill Superman. And thus over the course of a number of different issues and titles, Superman faced off against a threat far greater than he had ever faced. A mysterious, monstrous creature named Doomsday, whose origin was shrouded in mystery. A being who wiped the floor with the entire Justice League and did the unthinkable...he, or it, killed Superman. Well, of course it was a big media event and the issue where Superman died sold a bazillion copies. Sure, we comic fans knew that it's very rare that a character truly dies and DC certainly wasn't going to kill off the franchise. But it did what it set out to do, namely sell a lot of comics and generate a lot of PR. The trouble was it wasn't a great story. What was Doomsday? Where did he come from? How come we never heard of him before? Those questions remained unanswered in favor of basically one big slugfest where lots of things get destroyed.

Now in fairness, in the introduction to this book, writer Dan Jurgens who wrote the original story states that that was exactly what he wanted. He wanted to give Superman a villain who could go toe-to-toe with him. This Superman Doomsday Omnibus collects the sequels (and prequels) to the monumental storyline. The initial sequel from Superman Doomsday Hunter/Prey # 1 - 3 is actually superior to the original Doomsday storyline. Superman is actually having nightmares about the creature and shows genuine fear. Convinced that Doomsday still lives he sets out in space to find him. His instincts were right as not only has the menace survived, but he's now on Darkseid's world of Apokolips. Even Darkseid cannot withstand Doomsday's power and he's severely defeated in battle. Superman finally learns the origin of Doomsday. He was created through a decades long process of evolution some 250,000 years ago that constantly died but became stronger each time he was re-born genetically, until he killed his creators.

I found Hunter/Prey vastly superior because it DID finally reveal Doomsday's origin, rather intelligently, and there was a definite suspense about the book that the first lacked. I mean, we all knew that Superman was going to die long before the issue came out. The sequel at least has some mystery and as Doomsday had once again evolved to become more powerful and you wondered how Superman was going to survive and defeat the creature.

The next portion of the book is actually some nicely done prequels which unfortunately present some problems. In these tales we see Doomsday first encounter Darkseid some 245,000 years ago and yet in the opening Hunter/Prey story, Darkseid clearly acts as if it's their first encounter. Then we see Doomsday battle the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe. He even kills hundreds of Green Lanterns. Yet no one seems to know who or what Doomsday was just a year or so earlier in the original Death of Superman storyline. You'd think someone might remember a monster that killed hundreds of Green Lanterns even if it was thousands of years in the past.

In the Doomsday Wars the creature is back again, this time rescued from his fate in Hunter/Prey by a Coluan named Prin Vnok working with Brainiac. Their sinister plan? Transfering Brainiac's consciousness into the indestructible body of Doomsday. Seeing Doomsday actually talk in complete sentences is surreal to say the least. Another story finds Superman actually having to ally himself with Doomsday to battle an even more serious threat called Imperiex. There is one final story but you might be getting the jist of the problem here. Each time Doomsday appears his threat is diminished. DC had the potential for a great end to a great villain if they had let things lie after Hunter/Prey but they couldn't resist bringing the creature back again and again. This is much the same thing Marvel did with Galactus. Galactus was never more terrifying or as much as a threat as he was in Fantastic Four # 48 - 50. Heck, Doctor Strange even took Galactus down single-handedly once.

Despite these problems, I still recommend the Omnibus, if for nothing more than the Hunter/Prey story and the prequels, which are quite good despite the inconsistencies.

5 out of 5 stars A must have book for Document Examiners and Attorneys.......2004-01-01

Mr.Hilton's review of Document Examination is all encompassing. He covers the entire realm of documents made by pen, pencil, typewriter, adding machines, cash registers, check writers, impression stamps, paper examination and trace markings on documents such as latent fingerprints, impressed writing and accidental markings. He discusses how identification is made and more importantly, when identification can not be made. I have read his book many times, as a document examiner and highly recommend it to both document examiners and attorneys. Mr. Hilton covers what the attorney needs to know in preparation for trial and how to handle a questioned document case in court.

It's very important book for people who usally work in document examination, especially at goverment labs. I usally read that book every year (again & again!) and I always find something new for the documents examination. In my country we say "It's the A and the Z of our work" or "It's the start & the end on our work". It's a baseline book for every document examiner. J.D.Makris Athens,Greece

      Book Description

The heroes who never die! Though the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents had a relatively short life during their initial run in American comics during the 1960s, you just can't keep a good team down, as evidenced by their periodic revivals over the years. This is the authorized, and definitive, book on the history of such memorable characters as Dynamo, No-Man, Lightning, Andor, the Iron Maiden, and all the other super-heroes and super-villains created by the late, great Wallace Wood and company. To celebrate the team's 40th anniversary, included are interviews with Woody's creative team, as well as those superb writers and artists involved in the various T-Agents resurrections over the decades, and a detailed examination of the origins and exploits of the characters themselves, including the shocking truth behind the first super-hero to ever be "killed," Menthor, the master of mental force!
